Houseboating is always more fun when you play it safe.

At Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas, we take safety seriously. So should you. To help, we provide a free safety orientation from a qualified instructor when you rent your houseboat. Below, you’ll find a list of the most important things to know.

LIFE JACKETS Each houseboat comes with life jackets for everyone on board. State law requires that every passenger 12 and younger wear them. We can help you learn about the different types and which are best for you and your group. We can also teach you how to wear them properly. Incidentally, life jackets make water activities more fun since they allow the wearer to use less energy to stay afloat.

CARBON MONOXIDE Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that’s very dangerous. Boat engines and generators both produce CO, so you must be careful—especially since early symptoms of CO poisoning (such as headache, nausea and dizziness) can be mistaken for seasickness or intoxication. All of our houseboats are equipped with CO venting and alarm systems that exceed federal requirements. Still, never swim around a boat when the engine or generator is running.

BE PROP-AWARE Do not swim behind a boat when the engine is running. Exercise caution when re-boarding the boat after a deep-water swim. Pull out of high-traffic areas. Stop the engine, then use the step(s) provided to get back into the boat. Don’t step on any part of the engine. Contact with a rotating propeller or stepping on a sharp prop blade can cause severe injury.

OTHER GOOD IDEAS As with a car, don’t drink and drive. Lake Powell is in the high desert, so stay hydrated and use sun protection. Keep a radio tuned for weather changes.

Be sure to heed all navigation buoys and always anchor at night.
