| WOMEN LEADING RESEARCH IN AFRICA

The Mawazo PhD Scholars Programme supports women’s capacity to find solutions to some of the most pressing needs facing the African continent. Our Scholars are African women under the age of 40 who are pursuing PhD studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and the social sciences at accredited universities in East Africa. Each year, we competitively select a cohort of PhD scholars whose research is relevant to African development priorities, contributes new knowledge to their field of study, and holds the potential for transformational change in their communities and beyond. Over the course of a one-year, non-residential fellowship, PhD Scholars receive grants to support their research, conference travel, and ongoing training. Scholars also benefit from professional and leadership skills trainings provided by Mawazo and our partners, research and editorial support, as well as mentorship and networking opportunities. Our programme is designed to amplify our Scholars’ research and position them as the next generation of leading experts, thinkers, and innovators who are finding homegrown solutions to local development challenges.

WE ENVISION A WORLD IN WHICH THE VOICES AND IDEAS OF AFRICAN WOMEN ARE AMPLIFIED TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE CONTINENT.

Kenya at a Glance

On average, women make up 30% of Africa’s researchers, and much 1 less in many countries.

Kenyan PhD students take an average of 6 years to complete 3 their studies.

Dominant expert voices on African issues are typically male, including scholars, news commentators, and industry, public sector, and civil society leaders.

Only 11% of every doctoral class 4 graduates.

Average enrollment of female students across universities in Eastern Africa is 30% of all total students, except in humanities 2 and social sciences.

Over half of teaching staff at

5 public universities do not have PhDs.

Pervasive sexism and cultural biases persist in dissuading girls and women from the sciences.

2:1 Ratio of men to women enrolled in PhD programmes with the ratio 5 being even worse in STEM fields.

Limited funds availability and selffunded nature of many PhD students exacerbate low completion rates.

80% of women pursuing PhD studies 6 in Kenya are self-funded.

Africa at a Glance Quantity and quality of research being produced is low.

Research Summary: My mathematical model will help the government and stakeholders make more accurate projections and allocate resources more effectively to address the spread of HIV/AIDS among adolescents and young adults in Kenya.

Research Summary: My research uses molecular tools to study zoonotic viruses, such as Ebola and Marburg virus, in Kenya. It will fill important knowledge gaps to support the prevention and control of filoviruses in potentially susceptible regions of the country. How the Mawazo Programme impacted my PhD journey Mawazo support enabled me to host a community sensitization workshop on filoviruses in partnership with USAID-Predict, where I engaged with stakeholders on the wider issues of zoonotic viruses and other pathogens in Laikipia County.

We help fill this innovation gap by positioning more African women as experts, innovators, thought leaders, and by promoting research dissemination and uptake.

1 UNESCO. 2018. “Women in Science Fact Sheet No 51.” http://uis.unesco.org/sites/default/files/ documents/fs51-women-in-science-2018-en.pdf

Africa is home to approximately 15% of the world’s population, with half of its population made up of girls and women. In spite of the great potential for innovation the continent holds, its research capacity is underutilised and women’s vital contributions to pressing development issues continue to largely be left out of knowledge production and decision making spheres.

Africa produces less than 1% of global research output in STEM. 1

It is a beautiful landscape filled with art and sculptures, as well as featuring 2 stages that will be used as our MA|RA|MA|SO Stage and MDUNDIKO Stage. It is also right on the breezy, white sandy beach of Bagamoyo, which you can access through an entrance at the bottom end of the campus. It was transformed into an executive agency in 2007, and would also become known as Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni Bagamoyo (TaSUBa), where training in the arts including visual arts, performing arts and technical studies continue til today.

Along with being the et PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO Designer for both stages, I was also in charge of managing the site. I PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO designed this site map of Malaika Beach Club and surrounding plots that PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO were part of the festival, which was later included in the festival booklet (which I also designed) for revellers to have as a guide to the festival. PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO Ongala was born in Kindu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the hardships of his early life had a profound effect on his later songwriting. He was introduced to music by his father, a singer and exponent of the sanza (a traditional thumb piano), and was a drummer and a singer but later switched to the guitar. In 1978, he was invited to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by his uncle Kitenzogu “Mzee” Makassy, to join his band Orchestra Makassy, whose Tanzanianinfluenced rumba became popular across east Africa.

Ongala became a celebrity by playing guitar with Orchestra Makassy. After working with them for three years, he joined Orchestre Super Matimila, named after a businessman who owned the band and bought their instruments. The move proved to be a massive success. Ongala’s charismatic stage presence dominated the group, while other members of the band played guitars, saxophone and percussion and provided sturdy backing for Ongala’s lilting, thoughtful and often controversial songs, which dealt with subjects such as poverty and Aids. His song Mambo Kwa Socks (Affairs of the Socks), a plea for safe sex and for young men to use condoms, was banned by Radio Tanzania, but he continued to perform it at concerts. Several of his songs were critical of the country’s elite, and the government considered expelling him on immigration grounds, but changed its thinking as Ongala became increasingly successful. He was granted Tanzanian citizenship instead.

Artists Residency of Kigamboni (ARK) is an artist development program dedicated to supporting the development of the Tanzanian art scene by providing local and international artists with the space and materials to push their creative career and new ideas in their practice. ARK is located on a picturesque 140-acre beachfront property nestled in the heart of Kigamboni in Amani Gomvu, 31km from Dar es Salaam city centre. The estate is surrounded by 550m of white beaches and cool azure waters; and is home to black pepper, vanilla, cloves and palm tree plantations; a protected sanctuary of sea turtles; as well as a sleepy fishing village that economically benefits from the exposed coral reefs; all working together to provide artists with a unique setting away from the hustle and bustle of Dar es Salaam. The residency program shares its home with The Overhang – a collection of charming and cosy self-serviced beach cabins. Artists will be invited to live and work within the untouched ecosystem that surrounds the estate and will be encouraged to create work that responds to the environment or experiment with materials found on the property. Artists will reside and work in the ARK Room and Studio that offers unrivalled panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. This opportunity will allow for the artists to add their mark on the space. ARK offers an inclusive environment that allows for complete immersion in the creative process, as well as an opportunity for artists working in various mediums to exchange knowledge, ideas and skills with the ultimate goal of creating a flourishing artists’ community. At the end of the residency, the artists and ARK will discuss together what artwork(s) created during the residency can be donated to ARK Collection as part of the residency that will be available to be viewed by the public.
