ABOUT ME I have always been drawn to the industry of architecture, but I soon realized my real interest was in interior design whenever I realized the space I was in had a direct affect on my mood. Being able to design a space that truly considers the user’s experience was something that inspired me.

My name is Araceli Ramirez. I am a graduating student from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Throughout my time at UNT, I have built upon previous skills and developed new ones. A couple being learning to navigate design software like Revit, learning the importance of time management, and improving my verbal presentation and communication skills.

Upon graduating I aim to pursue a career within the interior design industry. A career that is transformative with room for growth. I want to focus on creating spaces that will leave a lasting impression on the users.

Design can completely change the experience and memories a person will have when visiting a place, so I aspire to help create new memories.

This will only be possible if I continue to expand on my current skills and learn from my experiences.

Networking will be one of my biggest goals because there is a lot I can learn from other designers. I will attend more events and connect with different professionals to broaden my network. To improve my time management skills, I will set realistic timelines for completing my tasks and work backward from my due date.

This will ensure I give myself a realistic timeline to be able to efficiently complete my work. Lastly, ensuring I stay on top of current trends and softwares will help elevate my work and benefit the firm I am working in.

Overall, interior design is an evolving career, and I am eager to get started.

REBRANDING CONCEPT MI COSINA

LA RAIZ

Started in Dallas by a Tex-Mex veteran Michael Rodriguez. Mi Cosina was originally designed to be an upscale Tex-Mex restaurant which prioritized using the finest ingredients to priovide warm, friendly, and professional service.

La Raiz Mexican restaurant was started in Houston, Texas. It was created in order to provide a nostalgic restaurant for the large popularity of Mexican immigrants in the area. La Raiz is an immersive restaurant intended to recreate the most authentic experience of Mexican dining culture and provide a sense of belonging for the customers.

H O U S TO N ’ S D E M O G R A P H Y Migration waves and economic shifts have shaped Houston’s demography. Over the past five decades, the city has witnessed a dramatic increase in its immigrant population, particularly from Mexico. Immigration changed the city’s social culture and fueled its economy, with immigrants contributing to sectors like construction, agriculture, and food services.

EL JARDIN The main dining area of La Raiz is the bustling hub of the restaurant - a vibrant space filled with Mexico’s sights, sounds, and flavors. Guests become participants in a living Mexican culture show as live music, dance performances, and cultural festivities transform the restaurant into a lively town square The space structure mimics a Mexican town square, “el jardin,” which is where the community goes to gather and hold community events.

Hammock style seating to mimic casual outdoor seating in Mexican households.

M AT E R I A L I T Y Chukum is a stucco technique that was specific to Mexico during the period of Spanish colonization and the southern region has Mayan influence.

Colorful tiles are a staple for Mexican design. They have a strong Mayan and Aztec influence dating back to before the 16th century. Their design varies between intricate patterns and colors.

The Mexican serape fabric was originally introduced to Mexico by the Spanish conquistadors. This material is commonly used as a textile or worn as a shawl.

EL SUEÑO Reflection takes center stage as guests embark on a journey of introspection and discovery. A mirrored ceiling design leads the way to a hidden speakeasy, a sanctuary tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main dining area. Here, the theme of “The American Dream” unfolds, paying homage to the aspirations and struggles of immigrants from the past and present.

Custom light fixture to reference the city lights in a big city.

Marble floor is a classic to the design of retro American diners. Its popularity sparked around the 1930s and it is made to resemble medieval Europe and game boards.

A common feature in older speakeasies was a big wooden bar which was usually placed in the center of the space.

Dim lighting throughout the space alludes to the unknown of the American Dream.

Red, white, and blue are the colors from the flag of the United States. They are subtly incorporated in the speakeasy to not become overwhelming.

- Multiple small conference rooms/break out rooms to allow for private work - A flow of natural light in the workstations to bring the outdoor in and encourage breaks. Ensuring employees are taking breaks will help ensure they provide Excellent service - Include exposed natural materials to bridge the outside with the inside.

- Providing designated areas for impromptu and un-intentional collaboration will help the company have the latest Innovations - Focus areas will help employees provide prompt Service.

- Respecting employees personal needs like connection to nature and wellness rooms is important to keeping employees satisfied.

Similarly, purple was also used as wayfinding for the refuel/coffee areas. Purple is linked with royalty and wealth, so for their headquarter office space SSG wanted a place they would feel proud of. The color purple also evokes a feeling of confidence which is beneficial when going into important meetings or consultations.

Southwest Solution’s brand color is blue, so it was important to incorporate it in the office design. However, blue is known to be a soothing color for a workspace, so it was heavily implemented in the work areas to easily spot the differentiate them. It also creates a focus bubble for the employees.

FOCUS AREAS Workstations were designed to be encompassed in a focus area to lower distractions from the rest of the office. When working with an open floor plan is crucial to be able to differentiate areas by their purpose.

Open work areas can become noisy which can lead to unproductiveness.

Feltech Acoupanels line the ceiling of the work areas to absorb sound waves and increase productivity.

Natural lighting was prioritized for the employees to raise energy levels and encourage breaks.

Workstations were position to facilitate impromptu collaboration. Employees are able to collaborate with someone simply by turning around or utilizing the ottomans for quick meetings.

WO R K S TAT I O N S

A S S E M B LY RO O M Southwest Solution utilizes their assembly room for long group meetings and training sessions. Different seating options were incorporated to encourage movement and allow for collaboration areas within the assembly room.

Learning stairs are beneficial to a space to raise energy levels and productivity. To maximize floor space and incorporate SSG’s own products the Wall Mounted Folding Bench Seat is a great solution for a large assembly room.

CONCEPT A space to partake in food & connection.

To accurately incorporate Japanese style, the Japanese concepts for space; Wa, Ba, Ma,Tokoro, along with prospect and refuge theory were considered.

Tokoro, and Ma can be attributed to prospect, in the Prospect and refuge theory. Tokoro is location, and Ma- open space, are designed for patrons to interact with the environment around them. This will be done by providing open viewing space, and brighter lighting. Ba- the knowledge mobilizing space, and Wa- relational space are categorized as refuge. To provide a more intimate environment, space from other patrons will be increased and low lighting is used.

M Y S T E RY A N D D I S C O V E RY In order to promote comfort, spark conversation, and personalize the guest’s experience, there was use of curvilinear and organic shapes.

In the space of Wa, where couples or one-on-one meetings gather, the use of suspended koi scale panels in an irregular wave formation “promotes calmness and reduces stress,” which is often associated with first impressions. Continuing with first impressions, the reception area is vital to make a statement to En’s guests. Each surface complements one other, creating a sense of mystery for the guest. A curved hallway obscures the restaurant beyond, creating excitement and encouraging En’s guests to explore.

D E S I G N P RO B L E M “The client wants the lighting to provide an appropriate level of light for reading and filing out forms for the parents, but also to feel playful for the children. The space should not seem scary or sterile.

Design a ceiling or wall mounted light fixture for this environment that supports the client’s program as well as providing ambient light for this area. The fixture will be used in non-emergency pediatric clinics in major cities across the United States. (rbtcompetition)”

SOLUTION Lepido is a vibrant symbol of growth inspired by the ever changing body of a caterpillar. Its large size traveling through the room captures the attention of children. The design was intended to invite children into the world of imagination and discovery.

With an array of vivid colors, Lepido creates a focal point for an otherwise daunting waiting room. Lepido’s specialty is its interactive nature. The bottom half of the fixture is designed with touch activated technology that allows the light to change color

OLEDWorks Lumicurve OLED Light Technology’s Wave line is specifically made with innovation in mind. The strip is about half a millimeter thin Ref. Level and is still able to produce light of about 300 lumen. The 0' - 0" whole Lumiblade portfolio is available in 3,000K and 4,000K with the high CRI of 90.
