In 2002, Bahrain became a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected parliament, marking a period of ongoing reform.
F
or over 4,000 years, Bahrain, an archipelago of 33 islands in the Arabian Gulf has been known to be a thriving hub for trade, culture, and opportunities. Bahrain, a land between two seas, made a name for itself as a commercial crossroad, linking the East and the West. Called fondly the “Pearl of the Gulf”, the Kingdom’s pearl diving industry was at its peak from 1810 to 1923. Pearl contributed three-quarters of Bahrain’s total exports in 1877. Following Bombay (now, Mumbai) and Turkey, Europe became a major market for Bahrain’s pearl exports in the 1900s. (source: Pearling Path). The value of pearl exports increased sixfold between 1900 and 1912 when merchants from India, Paris, London, and New York were all vying for the finest pearls at source. In 1932, Bahrain was the first to discover oil on the Arab side of the Gulf. The reserve being relatively small, prompted the Kingdom to shift gears and build the region’s international business relationships. The island nation, third smallest in Asia, continues to foster international relations through its diplomatic ties with nearly 180 countries. In 2002, Bahrain became a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected parliament, marking a period of on-going reform. In June 2006, Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa became the first woman from the Middle East and third throughout history to be appointed President of the United Nations General Assembly. Since the 2008 launch of The Economic Vision 2030, and the #TeamBahrain initiative, Bahrain has been steadfastly increasing opportunities for the world to create their bases in the Kingdom across various sectors. n
Bahraini Pearls and a French Connection
In 1912, Jaques Cartier arrived in Bahrain with a simple task: to find a way to source the best pearls. On a mission to propel Cartier into the global jewellery brand we all know, Jaques Cartier went home not just with a trade perspective on Bahraini pearls but with a longterm relationship that shaped the French brand during its early days of growth, as described in Francesca Cartier Brickell’s book, “The Cartiers”.

n March 2004, the crowd roared as Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher lifted the cup after winning the first-ever Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix, the spectacle marked the beginning of the 20year journey of the Bahrain International Circuit.
Over the years, Bahrain’s event was recognized as the "Best Organised Grand Prix" by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA - the governing body of motorsports). To many, the Bahrain Grand Prix is unrivalled as the biggest event in the Kingdom, a testament to the circuit recording 99,500 spectators during the 2023 Formula One weekend. Bahrain GP became the opening race of the Formula One season, setting the tone for an action-packed season where 20 drivers battle it out across 20+ race tracks all over the world. Boasting a capacity of 70,000 visitors and multiple track layouts, the entire facility took less than 18 months to build.

Everything came from a question that HH Sh. Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa asked himself as a fan of the sport: ‘’What is missing in the MMA industry that can enable fighters to have the same resources and lifestyle as athletes from other sports?’’ The answer was that the entire industry was stuck on a model that was not able to elevate the sport to what it could be. It’s stuck in an event business format when it should be under a sports business format, which has enabled so many other sports to thrive on all levels. We believe that providing fighters with global opportunities to fight for a global audience is the way forward, and that is why we created the BRAVE Combat Federation. The Federation has globalized faster and broader than any other promotion in the industry. It has now provided nearly 800 fighters from 80+ nations with the opportunities we spoke about when we first started, also being hosted in a world record 30 countries. BRAVE CF is also an instrument for change in the entire industry and that’s why we have partnered with the likes of IMMAF, to empower them to become the global regulators for MMA, something the sport lacked and was stopping MMA from truly becoming mainstream and transforming the lives of everyone involved in the industry at all levels. And this reform is taking place under the vision of His Highness Shaikh Khaled.
Exclusive What went into making BRAVE CF the most global MMA promotion and what does this mean for Bahrain’s status in the global MMA scene? A leader that leads from the front, presented a clear vision and supported in every way possible. HH Sh. Khaled Bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s passion allowed us to make this happen. A dedicated team that believes in this vision has put everything on the line to compete at the global level by being passionate, aggressive and ambitious. And a lot of great global partners joined us with the goal of making history. BRAVE CF is the crown jewel of Bahrain sports. The Kingdom is now producing some of the best athletes in MMA, worldwide. We also had an edition that had, what I believe, is the greatest opening in any sporting event, when HH Sh. Khaled received Bu Hazza, a special needs child training MMA as a part of his program and made his dream come true: they competed together in the cage with the world watching. Bu Hazza won and it was a treat to see the happiness on his face. That moment encapsulates what Bahrain and BRAVE CF are all about and there will never be another moment that touched my life as much as that. Can you describe an unexpected moment you’ve witnessed during an MMA event? BRAVE CF events are always filled with exciting and unexpected moments, but I think the most unexpected one would be during the BICW 2022, in which we introduced the MMA Super Cup. During a Super Cup bout, a fighter tried to throw a spinning kick at his opponent right before the end of the round, and the referee stepped in to separate both competitors. The kick ended up landing on the referee and knocking him out momentarily. I

But the BICW events in Bahrain will always be the most memorable. We had the World Championship along with a huge BRAVE CF event, as we introduced the most valuable trophy in sports.

What upcoming developments can we expect to see from the SARKCO Group, both in Bahrain and beyond? We have several exciting developments on the horizon. In Bahrain, we have the Hanging Villas project in Seef, set to be unveiled soon, along with completed luxury villas in Amwaj and ongoing construction of five more. Additionally, a new hotel near Water Garden City in Seef is in the works. These real estate developments are collectively valued at BD 20 million and are set to be completed in 2024 and 2025. In terms of expansion, we are venturing into new territories such as Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai, as part of our commitment to exploring new regions and opportunities. Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB) was officially inaugurated under the patronage of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, by HRH Prince Salman, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on November 21, 2022. EWB is a stunning piece of architecture with exquisite accents of traditional designs over a total area of 309,000 square metres. Normal mode is a good compromise between the two, and it's the one I used most often while driving.

The 2023 Icons of Porsche A collection of Porsche’s classics, a record-breaking 911 inflatable and the first public viewing of the new Panamera were some of the biggest highlights of this year’s Icons of Porsche.

he Icons of Porsche in Dubai exceeded expectations with over 27,000 fans attending the gathering over two days on 25 and 26 November. Fans of classic cars, arts and culture were on hand to commemorate 75 years of Porsche sportscars and 60 years of the iconic 911 model. We even got to witness a few Bahraini-registered cars that were shipped to Dubai for this event. Highlights included the first public display of the new Panamera and the unveiling of a special ‘Sonderwunsch’ 911 Turbo that paid homage to the first-ever 911 Turbo. “The passion and strength of the Porsche community in our region was again on display at this year’s Icons of Porsche,” said Dr Manfred Bräunl, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE. “This year Icons of Porsche offered more colour, more cars, more fans and more passion than ever before. Regional premiere at this year’s Icons of Porsche included the 718 Spyder RS and Vision 357 Speedster concept. Also on-hand were the all-electric Mission X hypercar concept, the 911 S/T and a host of cars from the Porsche Museum collection. Event attendees enjoyed attractions from the eight festival zones: 60 Years of 911, Esports Arena, The Pit Lane, The Boulevard, Mission X, Porsche Museum heritage truck, Art Beach and the new Panamera Cube. The skyline around the Dubai Design District had a noticeable addition over the weekend, as an inflatable Porsche 911 coupe towered over the Icons of Porsche precinct and was visible from afar.
This year Icons of Porsche offered more colour, more cars, more fans and more passion than ever before.
The bright red figure, positioned in the middle of the festival, officially achieved a new Guinness World Record for the ‘largest inflatable vehicle’. Measuring almost 20 meters in length, a height of over six meters and a width of over eight metres, the gigantic inflatable is based on the shape of the first generation F-Series 911, in production from 1963 to 1973. n

When I say that I pushed the limits across different kinds of terrain - I really mean it. I’ve travelled the world test-driving cars and attending launch events, but never before have I been allowed to push a vehicle off-roading as much as I did on this trip. Lakes, wadi’s, sand dunes, rocks etc. Even at times when I thought I was pushing enough, the Ford Middle East reps would tell me to push harder! An example of this was whilst driving through one of the wadis of Oman, made up mostly of small lakes and rocks of all sizes. It was rough and bumpy, so I was trying to be cautious whilst maintaining a moderate speed. Andrew Gregory, who works with Ford Middle East, told me to step it up and apply more gas - so I did – and it was great! This vehicle handled all off-roading with ease. While the Everest's off-road capabilities impressed me deeply, its on-road performance proved equally engaging. Navigating paved roads and highways was a comfortable and enjoyable experience, further enhanced by the spacious interior and the latest driver-assistance technologies.

Stars of Ferrari A recap of the Finali Mondiali Ferrari at the Mugello Circuit.

he Mugello Circuit in Italy hosted the Finali Mondiali Ferrari from 26 to 29 October, celebrating European and North American series titles in the final round of the 2023 season. The sporting season saw Ferrari’s historic victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most prestigious round of the FIA WEC, with the 499P. Besides racing, the packed programme featured F1 Clienti, shining the spotlights on the single-seaters that have written Scuderia Ferrari’s history in the Formula 1 World Championship on tracks worldwide. Not just competitive activities. Mugello showcased the 12-cylinder engines of the XX Programme cars, exclusively for noncompetitive track use, and a chance to admire the cars of the Club Competizioni GT, former stars of the most prestigious international GT championships over the last two decades.

As per tradition, the most anticipated event was hosted on the final day (29 October), when the public witnessed the Prancing Horse cars gathered on the track to watch the unmissable Ferrari Show from the grandstands. Fans enjoyed the adrenalin-packed dynamic exhibition of the event's stars, back at the Tuscan track two years after the last one. The event saw the unveiling of the new Ferrari 296 Challenge. During the same weekend in Tuscany, the champions of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli 2023 were honoured and the Ferrari 499P, winner of the last edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and the Ferrari 296 GT3, first across the finish line in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, were also celebrated. The forthcoming edition of the Finali Mondiali Ferrari will be held at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola from 16 to 20 October 2024. This marks a return after a two-year hiatus. The circuit in Emilia-Romagna had previously played host to the Finali Mondiali in 2022. n

he much-anticipated Emirates Dubai 7s kicked off on 1 December and concluded its 53rd edition with resounding success on Sunday, 3 December. In an electrifying start to the HSBC SVNS Series, the event brought together 24 of the best rugby 7s nations to Dubai for an exciting tournament which saw South Africa defeat the spirited Argentinian team 12-7 in the men’s event, while the Australian women’s team overcame their archrivals 26-19 to end New Zealand’s winning streak of 41 matches. Three days of non-stop rugby fun ended on a high note as the Emirates Dubai 7s served as a platform for cultural exchange while fostering connections among diverse communities united by a shared love of sport. The event welcomed over 80,000 fans and festival goers to The Sevens Stadium to cheer on their favourite teams from around the world and enjoy a wide range of entertainment, music, F&B and family experiences. n
