he Arab is the oldest of all equine purebreds and was the ancestor of all modern light breeds. He is also, somewhat contradictory though it may seem, widely renowned as the most beautiful, as well as the toughest and most enduring of horses.

It is true that the Arabian is beautiful with his distinctive, proudly carried head and high-carried tail, his inherent pride and elegance, and his glowing satin-coated quality. All this combines to more than beauty; it is the essence of the breed. With it goes that magic thing called charisma, a quality of enchantment that gathers disciples of all ages and of all walks of life. This has been the talent of the Arab from earliest times. It is even more evident now.

The equally famed endurance of the breed goes beyond stamina alone — at least in the sense of “bottom” in a long race. It includes the ability to exist in the climatic extremes of the desert; to live on little and poor-quality forage or on camel’s milk when feed was totally unavailable; to subsist on little water, itself often brackish or contaminated, or again resort to camel’s milk when there was no potable

water at all. Topping off all this, he was able to partake in raids and wars, showing plenty of speed as well as endurance, under almost intolerable conditions. This was the furnace that forged the Arab, and these qualities persist today despite infinitely better living and “using” conditions in the Western world.

The charm of the Arab is so great that it attracts the attention of a larger percentage of would-be horse owners than does any other, especially those who have had no more association with a horse than an occasional nose-patting confrontation at a roadside corral. The well-known docility of the Arabian accounts for this, along with the irresistible appeal of their gazelle-like foals.

The kind temperament of the Arabian is believed to be due to the breed’s long association with man — not in the usual sense of subjugation, but rather as a companion. Very often, each mare, foal, and stallion was individually cared-for, hand-fed, and even housed in a tent at times. In short, they were often members of the family. This has been the case for at least 1,500 years, possibly a couple of centuries longer, and adds up to a long period of close companionship.

The privations undergone by generations of desert horses brought about that “dryness” or clean-cut quality which is so admired. Every bone of the head is well-chiseled and veins are prominent; the neck is light and fine at the throat, and the tendons of the legs are sharply defined. A bulky, gross horse could not survive long in the desert, nor could one with coarse or heavy bone. At least they apparently did not persist long enough to perpetuate the kind.

While the desert may have given its horses their toughness and ethereal qualities, it did not give them their original type.

Long before there was a people known as “the Aribi,” the ancestral Arabian horse was abundant in the Near East and was the war horse of all the nations and city-states in that area. Early Egyptian art shows that the horses first known in that section of the world were identical in head-style and tail-carriage to Arabian horses of today.

Other art of the period shows chariot teams with these same characteristics.

The only major difference is the type of head. A couple of tile drawings in Egypt show weedy, immature-appearing horses with dished faces, and so do some Hittite carvings of nearly a millennium later.

The majority of the tomb paintings and sculptures show horses with oblong, rather than triangular heads. Skulls of horses of this period found in Egypt bear out the evidence of the artists.

In fact, most of the desert-breeds of that era had rather plain heads, and when a typey one is seen in art, it is an occasion for comment and admiration. The phenomenon is that the stylishness, and especially the high-arched tail-carriage, should persist through so many millennia, through countless breedcrossings, and through centuries of use as a war-horse, where style would have been the least of the requirements. This was, however, a feature highly valued by the Bedouin — not the total style, as such, but the high tail-carriage. It must have been considered proof of antiquity of origin. Certainly, the later imports of Persian times bore no resemblance whatever to the proto-Arabian, whether as to tail-carriage or over-all quality, class, or temperament. The Bedouins of many tribes so admired this feature that the tail of the newborn foal would be pushed up over his croup and massaged intermittently for several days. This practice has been continued into this century, as Prince Mohammed Ali of Egypt in 1935 wrote of it as being a contemporary thing; so did the Blunts fifty years earlier. This would indicate that the Arabs were among the first to add a little artful improvement where nature might not have been cooperative enough.

The distinctive traits or characteristics of the Arab have been inherited in varying degrees by many of their descendants.

Sometimes a feature is copied artificially, as in the case of the high tail-carriage. The pride, the speed, the stamina, and the fire of the Arabian, all have contributed to, and in most instances, been amplified by his specialist offspring.

In today’s well-populated horse world, especially in its show segment, nearly all niches were well and adequately filled before the Arabian horse, as a recognized breed with fully accredited registry and sufficient numbers with which to compete, came on the horse-show scene. True, it had always “been around,” but more as a novelty, and a high-priced one at that. Accordingly, there were no performance classes for Arabs; there were no races open to them, nor much of anything else. But one of these “or else” affairs was a forte of the Arabian horse, and that was endurance rides. In these, they soon took the majority of honors — starting with the Official U.S. Army Endurance rides. This continues today with various trail rides, as well as longer endurance affairs.

With no other field open to the Arab, he was forced to compete in his own shows — the now well-established all-Arabian events, with large entries and many types of classes. It is this versatility as a breed, along with its beauty and glamour, not to mention its temperament, that attracts people to it in ever-increasing numbers. Quite important in its over-all appeal is the range of sizes within the breed, from little over 13 hands to close to sixteen. While, admittedly, the two extremes are rare, the breed nevertheless can supply mounts for the short and the tall, and in its smaller version, for children who can “grow into” the larger sizes. It is the ideal family horse for those families who prefer a goodly dash of equine style and beauty, along with amiable versatility.

The Arabian is not a color breed, so markings and color are not all that important, except that the body spot has been discriminated against in the judging rules — though recently modified and accordingly, has been considered “unclean” by novices. Some the more naive — unfamiliar with the breed’s tradition of plentiful markings — have considered it a “sign of admixture.” Instead, it is more likely a sign of the breed’s antiquity. In the first place, the reason for this “anti-white” clause was to discourage production of pintos in the breed, and after decades of teaching that “Arabians are never parti-color,” it is embarrassing to admit that they are.

The beautiful head, so typical of show-quality Arabians, is not necessarily typical of the desert-breeds, either now or in the past. It is instead patterned after artists’ impressions of the Arabian head. Even a plain-headed horse looks typically Arabian

when he is fired up, nostrils flared, and eyes popping. One thing not mentioned in the standard is “dryness,” without which a head cannot be breedy, and in which the head is cleancut with bone structure sharply defined, and the veins distinct.

The fetish of shortness of face can be overdone, especially as such a head can also be meaty — the opposite of “dry.” Many of the most beautiful heads are not especially short, but of course, they are not noticeably long either. It is noted that the faces of the best performance horses are rarely short, nor do they have an exaggerated dish. This may indicate a need for some length in air passages, as well as room in sinus cavities, for maximum efficiency. Or perhaps, this is only because few of the pretty-headed ones are worked hard enough to enable him to disprove the foregoing impression. Whatever its degree of dish or length of foreface, the typical Arabian head is unique, with its ethereal beauty, its expression of super-equine intelligence and of combined fire and sociability.

The Arabian is by reputation, if not always by fact, quite short-backed, and this is presumed to account for his undeniable weight-carrying ability. The claim is often made that all Arabian horses have five lumbar (loin) vertebrae, while all other horses have six. Despite that “all” claim however, nearly three-fourths of the Arabian (purebred) skeletons counted had six lumbar vertebrae, the rest the much-vaunted five. In comparison, assorted other types of horses, especially Thoroughbred and Morgan, occasionally had only five. The

Arabian, however, is more often inclined to have only seventeen rather than eighteen pairs of ribs, and nearly always has two less caudal (tail) vertebrae. The short dock, compared to that of other horses, is clearly evident in Arabians, made more obvious by its high carriage. It may be that the shorter length causes the higher carriage.

The croup of the Arabian is more level than in most breeds, but not necessarily dead level. However, it does appear to be when the horse moves out, lifting his tail as soon as he starts forward, and accordingly, also lifting the first sections of the flexible caudal vertebrae. A steep croup cannot effect the lifting of the tailhead. On this type, a dead tail looks best; a well-carried tail rather ridiculous.

Much has already been said about the Arabian’s tailcarriage. Except when attentively interested in something, the Arabian does not “carry” his tail. But the minute he moves ahead, it is lifted so that at the walk or trot, it is carried in a high “fountain” arch, but flagged at the gallop. When showingoff with a strutting trot, the horse often rolls his tail over his croup, or else just flags it. Even the youngest foals show this.

There are degrees of “high” carriage, of course. The ideal is the afore stated arch, well above croup level. Others are barely above that level, but all in all, the tail is carried well away from the body.

An Arabian should have all three breed-character points to be considered typey, but he can get by with only two — any two — and still do well in halter competition if he is also well-conformed.

“Head-hunters” may be content with a horse having a beautiful head, but otherwise faulty; practical horsemen are not so easily pleased. The public expects a horse to stand up to its work, and one that is “all type and no horse,” simply will not fill the bill. Type is placed ahead of conformation in judging, but it should be fifty-fifty, or else correct conformation should be considered part of type, itself.

The choice of one’s horse ofttimes reflects circumstance as well as the aspiration and dreams of the horseman. But, there are few who have seen the Arabian in full stride, or beheld the depth of his dark eye, who could deny that they have fleetingly sensed the swaying palms of the oasis, and briefly heard the eternal sigh of lonely desert winds.

Is it just imagination, or is there something more to this remarkable animal who openly displays his affinity for man?

any equine enthusiasts and movie buffs remember the scene well: The beautiful black stallion Al-Hattal galloping across the Nejd desert region toward the ocean beside the paint Mustang stallion Hidalgo after a grueling 3,000-mile race. In the movie, Al-Hattal is the coveted horse of the desert tribes and of the nefarious Lady Anne Davenport.

While Hidalgo is ultimately victorious, the beautiful black sheikh-owned AlHattal danced from scene to scene capturing admirers along the way.

In real life, Al-Hattal is the 1994 stallion TC Bey Cedar (Bey Shah x FTL Elaynah), bred by Tom Chauncey’s Desert Arabians in Scottsdale. As a yearling he earned his first moment in the spotlight when he was named Region 7 Champion Yearling Colt. Through his early years he continued to capture halter wins and championships at the class “A” level as well as wins in western pleasure. He was “discovered” at a class A Arabian show by Disney talent scouts, and in 2002, Disney purchased TC Bey Cedar and he officially began training for his film debut.

Even though over 800 horses were used in the making of Hidalgo, the equine character Al-Hattal was played exclusively by TC Bey Cedar without the use of stunt double horses. Disney sent TC Bey Cedar to Morocco for filming all of his desert scenes, from rearing to racing.

After the filming for Hidalgo was over Cecilia “Lizzy” Nasute, a local Californian horse trainer and owner of Black Silver Arabians, fell in love with TC Bey Cedar and purchased a half interest in him from Disney in 2003. Unfortunately, TC Bey Cedar suffered an accident that prevented him from doing more film work, and in February 2006, Nasute purchased him outright.

Nasute exhibited TC Bey Cedar as a breed ambassador and presented him at equine-themed conventions such as the “Equine Affaire” in 2008 where he completed tricks such as rearing, bowing, and carrying objects for his fans of all ages. “People were always shocked to find out he was an Arabian stallion. He showed them how wonderful the Arabian horse is — his mind is out of this world,” Nasute said.

In 2010, Nasute sold TC Bey Cedar to Linda Belgrave of Hauula, Hawaii. “A friend of mine on Oahu bred her mare to TC Bey Cedar, AKA ‘Beyley’ after discovering him online,” says Linda. “When I discovered TC Bey Cedar’s availability I bought him myself as a birthday gift!”

Today, TC Bey Cedar, is still galloping across the sands alongside an ocean, but now he does so with Belgrave at the shimmering waters on the coasts of Hawaii. Belgrave keeps TC Bey Cedar on her 11-acre farm named Papa’aloa Animal Lover’s Paradise on the coast of Hamakua on the Big Island with Belgrave’s twelve horses, including four of TC Bey Cedar’s offspring.

When asked about what she loves most about TC Bey Cedar, Belgrave noted, “His beauty, of course, but he is also very peoplefriendly and easy to handle. He managed to slip into the open pasture with the rest of my horses one day recently, and was just happily hanging out with all of them.” It is easy to see that Beyley owns her heart.

The Arabian horse is no one-trick pony. While some breeds have endless classes of just one or two styles of riding, at the Scottsdale show there will be six arenas going for ten days with many different things happening in each arena. You can watch Arabians jumping in a gambler’s choice, where each fence is worth a certain number of points (the more difficult the higher the points) and the rider chooses the route based on the skill of the horse to win the most points. In another arena, an Arabian cutting horse is nose to nose with a cow — keeping it from joining the herd — although the cow has other ideas and will do its best to duck and dive and squirt past the horse back to the herd. If it can. In the indoor arena a class of twenty ten-year-old children are riding Arabian horses in a walk-trot class. Watch how carefully the horse takes care of the rider, gently responding to the command to jog or trot. In the Wendell Arena, English pleasure horses are trotting down the rail, ears forward, tails high, and knees touching the sky.

The cheers and shouts of the crowd will show you the way to the class — it is loud, fast, and electrifying.

In yet another arena, judges are carefully considering a class of stallions, evaluating their structure and elegance. The stallions are standing on tiptoe — radiating power and beauty at the same time. The Arabian is truly the most versatile of breeds, inviting you to watch and gaze in wonder at their beauty and athletic prowess.

WESTERN PLEASURE Imagine saddling up your beautiful Arabian partner and heading out on the trail for a fine day of riding Western style. That is the image the judge is looking for in the western pleasure horse.

The saddle, bridle, and all the appointments are western — from the rider’s cowboy hat to their chaps and boots. However, this is a “show” western class. There may be a little bling, and the horses won’t be chasing any cows in this class. The horse should present a picture of a calm, willing, and beautiful mount that you could ride at a slow, easy pace down the trail. Watch for a deliberate walk, a smooth, balanced and easygoing jog-trot, an easy lope where the horse is moving forward, and in the open classes, a fast hand-gallop.

For although these horses are “show” western performers, they should be capable of chasing down a steer — if they had to!

ENGLISH PLEASURE In the days when horses were the main type of “vehicle” to get from place to place, style was very important. A high-stepping horse with head carried proudly and the Arabian’s natural high, flowing tail would have been a crowd-stopper.

The Arabian English pleasure horse is ridden in a style known as Saddleseat, which differs greatly from the type of English riding done over fences or chasing foxes.

This class is all about finesse, style, a high-stepping trot, and a horse who appears happy at its job, going with balance and cadence at all gaits. The saddle is much larger and flatter than a hunter saddle and you will see the horses shown with two bits and four reins! With ears forward, marching down the rail, head and tail held high, the English pleasure horse is still a crowd-stopper today!

HUNTER PLEASURE A hunter horse is above all things, obedient.

When one is having to ride cross-country over fences in a group — often at a full-out gallop — having a horse that you can trust is vital. A hunter horse should be able to cover a lot of ground, so watch for a long, even trot and a canter and hand-gallop that is balanced, controlled, but covers ground. While this is a “show” class and no hounds and foxes will be seen, the horse and rider should have a workmanlike appearance and appear capable of going cross-country if necessary. The horse should listen to the rider and be immediately obedient to the rider’s commands. The motion of the horse is lower and more economical than that of the English pleasure horse, and of course, the saddle is suited for jumping rather than a stylish turn around the park.

COSTUME The costume class was originally to show off the horse in regalia similar to what one would see on a Bedouin galloping over the sand dunes. Over the years there have been trends and styles ranging from very authentic to over-the-top Hollywood glitter and glamour. For the most part, the costumes have an authentic look to them, but have just a bit more “bling” and “eye appeal” than you would generally find in the desert. This is the only class where you will see the horses enter at a gallop and you will not see them trot. Get ready to see these horses not only gallop, but also hand-gallop, which is their turbo-gear!

This is a very exciting class and one of the crowd favorites. The class is judged 75 percent on the horse’s performance and 25 percent on the costume itself.

TRAIL A good trail horse should be able to negotiate a series of obstacles with precision, dexterity, and a calm demeanor. Obstacles are set up to test the horse’s obedience, ability, and agility. Walking over poles is akin to stepping over downed logs on a trail. You might see a bridge, a mailbox, or other common objects that a horse may need to negotiate with a rider out on the trail. Horses that appear nervous, knock over, or displace obstacles will be penalized, but not necessarily eliminated. The horses are scored based on their precision and temperament while negotiating the obstacles. Scores are announced after each horse, so you will be able to keep track of the leaders as the class progresses.

REINING While western pleasure horses are “show” cowboys, the reining horses are the working-class performers. These athletes must do a series of maneuvers that mimic running after a cow, turning, and stopping it — all without a cow in the arena!

One of the most important aspects of the class is the horse’s obedience to the rider. The best horses are the ones that you cannot tell when the rider gives the horse a signal. It should be a partnership between horse and rider that is smooth and harmonious but also exciting and dynamic. Watching the horse go from a full-out run to slow lope without any visible cue is astonishing to see. The dynamic tension of the reining class will have the spectators on the edge of their seats. Each horse’s score is announced after its individual performance, so you can judge along with the judges and see how you do.

HALTER The halter class is where the actual structure or conformation of the horse is being judged. Characteristics that clearly identify an Arabian, such as a large, dark eye, a dished face, a short, strong back, long, level croup, and high-set tail are given preference. The horse must also show a desirable way of moving and should be proud and expressive. Handlers strive to get the horse to stand in a picture-perfect pose in the center of the arena for the judge’s attention. Stallions should be masculine and powerful, but well-mannered. Mares should be feminine and beautiful as well as showing the structure capable of producing foals. Horses should not be frightened or intimidated, but should display a natural exuberance.

LIBERTY Probably the most popular event at a show is the liberty class. It is a freestyle class set to music selected by the handler. The horse is taken into the ring and turned loose to show off for the audience. A great liberty horse is one that thinks highly of itself and uses the entire ring to full advantage.

A strong, floating trot is beautiful to see and will cause scores to go higher.

The horse should be enjoying itself, and should vary its gaits. Running to corners and stopping or looking for a way out will be scored lower. A horse that comes into the ring and says “Look at ME” is the one that will likely be the winner.

he walk-trot class entered the ring without fanfare. Tiny children, all under ten, maneuvered their mounts around the arena. What an amazing contrast in size and strength!

The judge approached one of the children in the lineup. “What’s your horse’s name?” she inquired. “Sonny,” replied the rider. “And what do you like the most about Sonny?” the judge asked.

After some contemplation, the young rider replied seriously, “He’s so nice.” And quickly added, “And he’s beautiful.”

In all honesty, Sonny had seen better days. It was late summer, but he already had a good start on a winter coat. He no longer looked young and beautiful and certainly wasn’t the most expensive horse at the show. He was, however, one of the most valuable. Sonny was one of those rare and wonderful “children’s mounts” and the child saw him as beautiful because he was “so nice.”

Horses are by nature flighty and skittish animals. They seldom intend harm in their strong desire to flee, but small things can cause major reactions in them. No horse is foolproof and without risk, so when the children and grandchildren start to clamor for one, how in the world does a parent find a horse that is safe?

First and foremost, it is important to seek reliable, professional help. The Arabian industry is blessed with many professionals who, if not active with young riders, can refer parents to trainers who are. It is important to get help from a trainer who deals with children and amateurs. Contact the local Arabian association for referrals. Most have youth groups with which child-oriented trainers are active. Once

for the rest of his life out of gratitude for the important role he played — or possibly move on to teach even more children to ride. Parents need to find a horse for the child based on safety, not on showring success.

A child’s horse should be one with a calm, tolerant disposition — easy to ride and slow to react to sudden hugs, riding backward, and any such activity a creative child may try! They might need two tugs of the lead and three nudges of the heels to get moving.

A tolerant horse is one that doesn’t mind momentary losses of balance, indiscriminate tugs on the reins, and repeated incorrect cues. In fact, a truly tolerant animal has no qualms about ignoring all but the correct cue! A horse of this temperament can be a fine teacher, not overreacting to frequent mistakes but patiently waiting for the child to find the right buttons!

Children should always be supervised around horses and properly attired in boots, long pants, and helmets. The happiest experiences are those achieved without fear or injury, and every effort should be made to afford the horse-loving youth this opportunity. Those blue ribbons will come along too!

you locate a suitable trainer and stable, make sure that the trainer’s goals match the parents’ and child’s.

Many stables take advantage of small local shows for experience — others are much more Nationals oriented. Some are not show barns at all.

With the luxury of professional advice at hand, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind while looking for a safe, reliable child’s mount.

Appropriate goals in mind, DO match the temperament of horse and child as well as matching the horse to the child’s ability. It’s important to find the child’s strong or weak points and select the horse accordingly.

Some children ride with instant confidence while others are more passive or timid. At this early stage of riding, the child doesn’t need a challenge as much as he or she needs to build or develop that confidence.

Trust the child’s instincts. Some children may be terrified of a seemingly appropriate mount. Don’t force the relationship — it will not be a successful one.

Select a horse whose conformation allows it to bridle easily and travel comfortably and whose size is manageable for the young rider. Struggling with a headset, fighting for balance, and maneuvering an oversized animal does not help a young rider progress.

The biggest and universal DON’T among trainers: DON’T buy a young horse so that the horse and child can grow up together. Someone needs to know what they’re doing — in this case, the horse! Find a horse that is quiet, welltrained, and experienced in the showring. The biggest problem for young riders is being over-mounted on high-powered horses they cannot ride.

Ask most professionals about their first horse, and they’ll describe anything but the fancy show horses they ride today.

Many a first horse is older, with many miles under saddle — as it should be. The very first horse a child rides or owns will probably not be the only horse they ever show. The first horse is an introduction to riding and may remain in the family

When Kathy met Holly — the morning Kathy’s first horse arrived in New York (in the rain!) from sunny Arizona, in October 2014.

I

was your typical horse-crazy girl, collecting Breyer model horses and such and hoping and praying my parents would buy me a horse of my very own. Alas, all I got were lessons — that began at age11. I was in heaven just to be around horses, let alone ride them! Lessons went on for many years along with working at a stable and “horse sitting” friend’s horses. All the while I wished I could have my own horse, but was never able to afford one. I fell in love with Arabians along the way (think “Black Stallion!”) and started my subscription to Arabian Horse World in the mid-1980s. If I couldn’t own an Arabian at least I could drool over them in the magazine! Every morning for the past 29 years I have pored over and read AHW while eating breakfast. I knew all the bloodlines and followed all the famous horses along the way like Khemosabi, Ali Jamaal, and Bey Shah, as well as admiring all the great breeders and trainers.

It wasn’t until my mid-fifties when I realized I was not getting any younger and darn it, I was determined to fulfill one of my “bucket list” items of owning a horse! Plus, since I had inherited some money, I felt it was finally time. If I was going to do this it was going to have to be an Arabian or Half-Arabian. I researched farms to find one whose board I could afford and then started the search for my own horse! I searched and searched the ads on the various online websites.

Months went by; I never found a horse that was the right match for me for one reason or another. Then one day, all of a sudden a search brought up the most beautiful Half-Arabian I had ever seen, and the bonus was that she was in my favorite color — buckskin. She was just perfect — gorgeous color with long black mane and tail, large beautiful dark eyes, smaller in size at 14.3 hands, well trained, and she even had a slightly dished profile.

buckskin Half-Arabs out there, so boy was I lucky to come upon Ms Holly. Never mind that she was in Arizona and I was in New York!

Not one to give up easily, I sent an inquiry to the owner and over the course of a month or so we struck up a relationship and after training and veterinary evaluations — I felt like YES this was the one! And yes, I bought her sight unseen (but I did hire an impartial third party to evaluate her).

Holly made the long four-day journey to New York with a horse transporter. I was nervous every day hoping she would arrive with no problems. Finally the day came, and at 7:00 a.m. she arrived at the farm — there was her beautiful face looking out at me through the trailer window! My heart was pounding as they backed her slowly out of the trailer — here she was, my horse! Even more gorgeous than her photos. I quietly led her around the driveway to stretch her legs and then gave her a

“My goals are just to love her,” says Kathy. “She is my best buddy for recreational riding – on the trail and in the arena. I like to think she likes me too, even if she does not care for New York weather. She is getting used to things she had never experienced before like snow, grass (‘hmmm … I can eat this green stuff!’), turnout in a real pasture, woods, and noises like crunchy leaves, deer and other wild critters. Just being around her makes me happy!”

big hug and kiss! Holly is registered as Hollywood Highlight (Fames Fortune x Ms Minnie Pearl). Her sire is pure Polish, a grandson of the immortal *Bask! I couldn’t be more proud to own her.

Now, four months later, things are going great with Holly. My trainer here thinks she’s wonderful. She is the sweetest thing, well-mannered and so much fun to ride.

More than that she is my best buddy; I love how she nickers to me whenever she hears me come into the barn or when I go fetch her from the paddock. I can just sit and stare at her for hours — she is so beautiful! I still have to pinch myself to realize this really is not a dream.

hether you are a first-time Arabian horse owner, or a longtime professional, the answer is unanimous: Arabian horses are simply the best.

We asked Arabian enthusiasts to share with us the ways in which the Arabian horse has enhanced their lives. While some may have been born into Arabians, others have found their way more recently. Whatever the story, the result is clear — the Arabian horse enriches one’s soul.

As a child, I had two loves in my life, horses and music. I have been blessed to experience both of these passions throughout my life.

My first experience with the Arabian horse was as a young child living on a very large farm in South Carolina. “Sunday” was a beautiful, majestic white gelding. On family rides, my father rode him. I got stuck with a very large, unattractive Tennessee Walker. Mind you, I like all horses, but I was quite disappointed that my horse wasn’t beautiful nor did he have that floating trot as if his hooves never touched the ground. To make matters worse, my parents then bought me a Pinto named Pinto Bean.

She was a beach ball with legs. Later in life, when the opportunity arose to have horses, I didn’t think twice about the Egyptian Arabian.

We now have a small Egyptian Arabian breeding and show barn in the lovely desert of Scottsdale, Arizona. We live near the Tonto National Forest and the McDowell Land Preserve with thousands of acres right at our doorstep where we can ride endlessly, day and night.

These Egyptian Arabians are a paradox — they are spirited yet gentle. Loving yet independent and most of all, loyal. Their memories are long; if treated with kindness and respect, they give that in return. They can sense the newcomer, who may be nervous, yet they seem to gather around and have a meeting as if to say “Welcome, we always like to have new people.” Once you are part of their herd, they become playful, sometimes mischievous but always grateful for a kind word, a rub on the neck, or peppermint candy.

These beautiful, loyal Arabians bring us peace and contentment, and also a wonderful reminder of living in the present, every day. Being around horses requires mindfulness and commitment.

ranches throughout the United States while growing up, I always dreamed of having many acres with many horses. I’ve come to realize that it’s not always the size of one’s ranch that matters to the horses, it’s the care that is given.

In return, they give us peace.

Athala King – Athala Arabians, Scottsdale, Arizona Arabians have always been in my life. I grew up a horse-crazy kid in Hawaii, and my first horse was an elderly fleabitten grey HalfArabian that I got when I was eleven years old.

Fast forward a lot of years, and my husband and I got our first purebreds when we were living in Massachusetts. We moved to the OregonCalifornia border where we have been for many years breeding Arabian horses and growing alfalfa hay. I have ridden endurance, shown, gathered cattle out on the rock flats, driven, and just plain loved our Arabian horses. I also paint and do photography and they are my models.

What is my favorite attribute of the Arabian? Everything!

Wendy Tinker, New River, Arizona My job as a fiction writer leaves me sitting in a room with my keyboard and my imaginary friends for company all day. The horses pull me out of all of that. Feeding and caring for twelve to sixteen horses every day, even with my part-time help, takes physical effort and forces me outside, rain or shine. The not only horses make me physically healthier, but mentally healthier, too.

I got my first horse, an Arab, while I was in college. For me, Nahero was snorty and argumentative. He was a terrific jumper, and wonderful on the trails. When he taught my kids to ride, he was patient and slow — even though that was not his nature. Even at thirty-two he is useful as a babysitter for the young foals in my fields.

The Arabian horse has changed my life in many ways. My horses have drawn me to new parts of the country as I have competed in shows. I have been fortunate enough to meet amazing people and horses from all over the world. When you are in the company of an Arabian horse, you can’t worry about other things in life, you must be present and in the moment. If I didn’t

have horses, might I be living in a bigger house?

Driving a newer car? Having more money in the bank? Yes. Would I be happier? No way.

It is hard to pick a favorite attribute of the Arabian horse. I think their kindness and people-orientation are the most endearing attributes. I also love their proud stature, their beauty, their loyalty, and their versatility.

The Arabian horse has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing clients and friends, and afforded me the chance to travel all over the country and continue to learn every day, which keeps my passion new and fresh. I can’t think of anything I would rather do.

These horses have become our family. Being a part of the Arabian horse industry has been a great sport for our entire family. Some of us compete, some of us are the cheerleaders, and all of us love to spend time in the barn with all our horses.

We pride ourselves on breeding horses with kind and willing temperaments. We have owned breeds other than Arabians, but we have found that Arabians have a unique ability to bond with humans, which is truly remarkable.

One cannot mention the attributes we love about the Arabian without the simple description of “beautiful.” But for me it is also the fact that they are so trainable. An Arabian can do so much; it is like having five horses in one. This is something special.

The Third Annual Doug Leadley Arabian Farm Tour November 19–22, 2014 · Santa Ynez, California by Kristi Hopp

F

arm tours are a popular activity for the Arabian horse community — a great way to share a passion for these exquisite horses with others. Recognizing this, and building on the success of similar programs, longtime Arabian horse professional Doug Leadley began organizing his own annual tour in 2012.

Doug has a long history with the Arabian horse. Raised in the Chicago area, where his father got him started in the industry, he has worked with many successful operations throughout the years — Birch Valley Arabians, Strutz Kentucky Park, and Nicasio Valley Arabians, once home to legendary Bey Shah (Bay El Bey x Star Of Ofir).

Now the manager at Orrion Farms in Ellensburg, Washington, Doug was inspired by the need to educate his clientele and the desire to reach out and introduce Arabian horses to people who have never met one. “Being in the business it is imperative for me to search out high-quality show horses and identify the best siring stallions for my clients,” says Doug. “At the same time, I want to educate them with real horses — pictures, videos, and reputations don’t tell the whole story.” Doug says

that tour participants have been a diverse group, including doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, a New York Times Best-selling author, and even a world-famous sculptor. But whatever their personal accomplishments or aspirations may be, everything takes a backseat when they are presented with the dynamic Arabian horse.

Doug organized the November 2014 tour to showcase a number of picturesque facilities in Santa Ynez Valley, California, these included Gallún Farms, Aljassimya Farm, Haras de Cárdenas, and Om El Arab International. Leaving from Scottsdale, Arizona, in a 15-passenger van, Doug took on his role as host and tour guide with Rick Moore of Shadow Bend Arabians, Rodolfo and Natalia Guzzo of Guzzo International, and yours truly, for Arabian Horse World.

We made our journey across the desert between Arizona and California and joined the California contingent of tour participants upon our arrival in Santa Monica.

A quick visit to Furioso Bloodstock in Temecula, California, made the time on the road well worth it. Owner Raymond Mazzei, a character and a font of knowledge, took great pride in presenting the Israeli-bred, Egyptian stallion *Baha AA (Al Ayad x Baraaqa AA). He was so well received that some of the tour participants acquired breeding packages.

Following the excitement at Furioso Bloodstock, we headed to our evening’s destination, the Santa Monica pier.

where dinner and cocktails were served, hosted by tour participants Ed and Adriana Roth. Interestingly enough, Ed was the sculptor of the horses, and the carousel house is managed by his wife, Adriana.

Although the next day meant more time on the road, it was to beautiful Santa Barbara, where we stayed in the historic Fess Parker Inn on the beach. Everyone took the day and another relaxing evening before the Arabian horse fun started the next morning.

Waking up to a gorgeous Santa Barbara morning, everyone was filled with anticipation to see some beautiful Arabian horses. Gallún Farms, owned by Greg and Nancy Gallún, was the first stop on the tour.

The youngsters were wonderful examples of beautiful Arabian horses, but the two stallions definitely brought the event to a higher level. First was the stunning black

by the welcoming faces of managers Joaquin Bin and Tiffany Schmidt, the first horse on the presentation list was the Polish stallion *Ecaho (*Pepton x Etruria), who is the pride and joy of everyone on the farm. While the formal presentation of horses was enjoyable, tour guests had the opportunity to walk among the vast green pastures of Haras de Cárdenas. It gave everyone a chance to view the lovely horses in a more natural setting, and to see them grazing and relaxing in the warmth of the morning sun.

The final stop was Om El Arab International, owned by Sigi Siller and her daughter Janina Merz. Excited about a justcompleted video about their esteemed breeding program, Sigi and Janina shared it with tour guests. bay stallion Art Dekko TT (Audacious PS x HC Amareea), who was followed by the equally impressive Aria Impresario (*Marwan Al Shaqab x GC Echlectica), and the young stallion Truest (Trussardi x Marlene Dietrich).

We piled back into the van and made our way to our next stop, Aljassimya. Relatively new to the valley, owner Sheikh Jassim bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar is building a spectacular facility for his Arabian horses among the rolling hills. The tour included a walk through the construction site, then progressed to Aljassimya’s leased facility to view the horses, One Hundred Oaks Ranch. The presentation arena had a stunning view atop a hill surrounded by oak trees, with leaves in splendid autumn colors. The Aljassimya program currently has relatively young stock sired by some of today’s most influential sires such as WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea) and *Monther Al Nasser (Ansata Hejazi x Aliah Al Nasser).

Both stallions had been leased to complement Aljassimya’s U.S. breeding program.

After an incredible day sharing the magic of the Arabian horse, Doug wasn’t about to let us down, as it was back to Santa Barbara for an evening sail across the bay and watching a brilliant sunset over the water.

The following morning we visited Haras de Cárdenas, owned by Gilbert and Jennie de Cárdenas. We were greeted

These farm tours are like going to college to learn about horses.

We learn what a good horse looks like — as well as great ones.

Seeing foals and observing pedigree lines people are crossing and their results is so interesting. We’ve also seen a lot of great ideas for barn and arena designs.

We’ve learned how different farms present horses to prospective buyers. Every trip we see spectacular horses and meet new friends.

We’ve learned a lot from Doug, from the various owners, and from the other people making the trip with us. Maybe the most valuable thing about these trips, though, is that when we go to the shows we are no longer strangers, we are among friends.

The Arabian horse adventure came to a close with Om El Arab, but Doug had scheduled yet another stop, this one both Arabian horse-related and touristy. Gainey Vineyards, which was once home to the prestigious Gainey family and its legendary breeding program, has since been transformed into an elegant winery, and we enjoyed the wine tasting while reminiscing about the Gainey Arabian legacy.

From start to finish, the tour was a classic illustration of the beauty and passion for the Arabian horse, friendships made and the lifestyle the Arabian horse brings to all of us. It is truly something special!

Doug has hinted that in 2015 the tour will go international, and it will undoubtedly be packed with excitement, fun, and more amazing Arabian horses.

Patricia Briggs is the author of over twenty novels including the No.1 New York Times best-selling “Mercy Thompson” series as well as the New York Times best-selling “Alpha and Omega” series. Books and horses have always been her passion. She got her first horse nearly thirty years ago, a CMK-with-a-dash-of-*Witez-II gelding named Nahero, who, at age thirty-two, is currently playing grandpa to last year’s filly. After buying a mare from Varian Arabians a few years ago that came with a breeding to Audacious PS, she discovered, to her surprise, that foals are amazing. So she put together a small group of mares including a Bey Shah daughter and the twice U.S. National Top Ten mare Psylk Obsession (who happened to be purchased on one of the tours).

Patricia is looking forward to six foals this year at Merry Go Round Arabians.

Congratulations to Rick Moore of Shadow Bend Arabians on his recent acquisition of two stunning mares: Angellicca DFA (Ever After NA x IA Shabella) from Aljassimya Farm, and Temptres FEA (*Laheeb IASB x Tempermental) from Jim Ferlita and the team at Haras de Cárdenas. Rick has been breeding Arabian horses since the mid-1970s. His Shadow Bend Farm is located in Cave Creek, Arizona, just miles from the heart of Scottsdale.

These two mares will be lovely additions to Rick’s already outstanding collection of mares.
