A

t U.S. Nationals this year many horses will have success, but only one horse is chasing history. Zefyr (Sundance Kid V x Pattrice) has already achieved greatness by being named the U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Horse in both 2013 and 2014. But now he is trying to do what no other Arabian western pleasure horse has ever accomplished — win the U.S. National Championship in open western pleasure three years in a row. The gold standard for Arabian western pleasure horses has for many years been Mi-Tiffany (MiTee x Sunn Bask Star). She was U.S. National Champion three times (1990, 1991, and 1994) but they were not won consecutively. To accomplish their goal, Zefyr and his rider Jody Strand will have to defy extraordinarily long odds.

They will face one of the strongest fields of purebred open western horses ever assembled. Onyx A (Sundance Kid V x Aliage SSA) and Josh Quintus, last year’s U.S. National Reserve Champion behind Zefyr, was impressive in his unanimous Canadian National Champion win recently, and he has already been named 2011 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure with Brett Becker. If Onyx shows, he will be very difficult to beat two years in a row. The 2012 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure winner, Khaberet PGA (*Khadraj NA x RA Kela) with Liz Bentley, is likely to compete. This year’s Scottsdale Champion, Monticello V (*Jullyen El

Jamaal x Mosquerade V), the 2011 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse, with Joe Reser will also be tough to get by. Clearly Zefyr and Jody have not discouraged anyone from challenging them. However, their competitors know that beating this great black stallion will be a tall order.

When I asked Zefyr’s trainer Jody Strand to tell me what, beyond the obvious physical attributes, makes Zefyr so special he said, “It’s his great work ethic. He just tries so hard. Certainly Zefyr has the athleticism, look, and quality but it is his disposition that sets him apart. I let my eleven-year-old daughter Megan get him out of the stall by herself. She grooms him and takes him out and lunges him on her own. Zefyr is really like a big puppy. We’ve had people breed to him purely for his disposition. They don’t care that he’s been National Champion.”

Zefyr’s owner, Laura Koch, said she always wanted to own him. That desire turned to action when her sister purchased one of his oldest foals, the Half-Arabian Zees A Dallas Cowboy, who later became the 2013 U.S. National Reserve Champion Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse. She saw “Emmitt” at his first show and recognized he was proof that not only was Zefyr a great show horse but he was also a great sire.

Consequently, Laura and her husband Bert Sanders made the offer that ultimately resulted in his purchase at that same show. In the future the emphasis for Zefyr will be on breeding. Laura believes that Zefyr will follow in his illustrious sire’s footsteps and become the next great sire of western pleasure horses. His very full book of mares is proof that many mare owners agree.

Laura Koch grew up showing Morgans, but when she moved from

Michigan to Georgia to attend dental school there were no Morgans in the area.

A friend suggested she talk to Michael Byatt, who was near her new home. She got into showing halter and won many National Championships with horses like Alada Magic (Alada Baskin x PAF Magic Moments), the 1992 U.S. National Champion Gelding and 1994 Canadian National Champion Gelding. Then she met Vicki Humphrey and won National Championships in English Pleasure with Eliza LA (Promotion x Cambara), 2002 Canadian National Champion English Pleasure with Vicki Humphrey, 2002 Canadian National Champion English Pleasure AAOTR 40 and Over with Laura, and Beyberry Love (Hucklebey Berry x Lovilee), 1998 Canadian National Champion English Pleasure with Vicki Humphrey. Later her sister was riding western with Jody Strand and she decided that looked like fun. A long and successful relationship with Jody Strand began. She purchased Azavachae (Versace x Moonrose Delight), who was 2005 U.S. National Champion Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity and 2006 U.S. National Reserve Champion and Canadian National Reserve Champion Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse with Jody. Laura also bought Victoriosa (CA Hermoso x Date With An Angel), who was 2006 Canadian National Champion Half-Arabian Western Pleasure with Josh Quintus and 2006 Canadian National Champion HalfArabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 40 and Over with Laura. In 2010, Laura met Bert Sanders and they have been married for three years. While Bert is relatively new to Arabian horses, he shares Laura’s passion. Under Jody’s guidance Bert has started showing and is enjoying success.

He immediately recognized Zefyr’s quality and it was he who insisted that Laura buy him.

Zefyr is sired by Sundance Kid V, who as a sire has dominated the Arabian western pleasure division with his successful foals. His daughter, Melody V (Sundance Kid V x Magdalena V), was the 2008 U.S. and Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure Horse as well as the 2006 U.S. and Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse. Last year Sundance Kid V offspring dominated the open western pleasure at the U.S. Nationals, with his sons Zefyr and Onyx A winning National Champion and National Reserve Champion, respectively. This year at the Canadian National Championships his offspring again swept the open western with his sons Onyx A and Sunstormm (Sundance Kid V x Ice Storm TC) winning National Champion and National Reserve Champion. “Sundance put our breeding program on the map.

We owe an awful lot to him. He’s a oncein-a-lifetime horse for us,” says owner Frank Chisholm. “I had to do a double take when I saw Zefyr show the first time.

Color, markings, and everything make him the most look-alike son of Sundance.

He’s a great representative for his old man; Jody has done an incredible job with Zefyr and we will be in the stands at U.S. Nationals to cheer them both on.”

It is interesting to reflect back now to the summer of 1981 when I was standing in the main barn at the Tersk State Stud in Pyatigorsk, USSR, admiring a handsome six-year-old dark bay stallion.

It was the height of the Iran hostage crisis and because Pyatigorsk was so far south, I was only a few hundred miles from Tehran. Yet instead of thinking about world events, I was imagining what a beautiful western pleasure horse this bay stallion would make. *Pesniar (Nabeg x Pesnia) had just been purchased by Armand Hammer and the newly formed OPL Associates at enormous expense.

“You want that colt?” Frank asked. Before they left, the Andersons owned Mister Storm.

Clearly he was never going to be a western pleasure horse with me, but I had that fantasy then and on numerous occasions when I would see him later. I could not have imagined at the time that many years later *Pesniar’s grandson would be on the cusp of making Arabian western pleasure history.

Zefyr was bred by Jennifer Anderson Bird. He represents over fifty years of Jennifer’s and her family’s breeding program. While still a young teenager, Jennifer Bird and her family visited Desert Arabians in Scottsdale. There, a beautiful three-year-old filly caught their eye. Unfortunately they were told that because she was winning so much she was not for sale. Undeterred, Jennifer’s father Carl Anderson agreed to buy an unremarkable yearling filly just so they could acquire Nadisa (Nasah x Ladisa).

“The owners didn’t like that yearling filly and I think they were so glad just to get her sold that they agreed to sell us Nadisa,” says Jennifer Bird. She became the foundation mare of Jen Mar Arabians, which was named for Jennifer and her mother, Marie Anderson. Nadisa, who was U.S. National Top Ten Mare in 1961 and 1962, is Zefyr’s fourth dam. At the same time, Jennifer’s father purchased the 1961 U.S. National Champion Stallion Ibn Habu (Habu x Airama), for the then princely sum of $10,000.

Unfortunately due to his untimely death, Ibn Habu left no offspring. The Andersons were very serious about their fledgling breeding program.

Like so many of us, the Andersons also made the pilgrimage to McCoy’s Arabians in Chino, California. Frank and Helen McCoy were gracious hosts and Frank was always willing to offer breeding advice. Just before they left that day, Frank noticed Jennifer looking at a nice grey yearling colt. “You want that colt?” Frank asked. “He has such good legs you just can’t stand him up bad.” Before they left, the Andersons owned Mister Storm (Royal Storm x Hasa). With Jennifer showing him he was U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt and later U.S. National Champion Costume. He also sired Misti Lisa (x Nadisa) who was bred and owned by Jennifer’s niece, Stephanie Anderson.

Stephanie bred Misti Lisa, Zefyr’s third dam, to *Bask, producing Zefyr’s grandam, Baliz. She was born December 10, 1972. Because she wanted to beat the end of year increase in *Bask’s stud fee, Stephanie had Misti Lisa covered on December 31, hence the December 10 foaling date.

Jennifer Bird had been breeding another mare to *Pesniar who could not get in foal so she had a breeding to use. She and Stephanie decided that Stephanie’s beautiful *Bask daughter, Baliz, would cross well with *Pesniar. The result of that serendipity is Pattrice, Zefyr’s dam. After Stephanie moved to San Francisco, Jennifer acquired Pattrice. In 2001 she bred three mares to three different Varian stallions. Pattrice went to Sundance Kid V. When Zefyr was foaled Jennifer knew immediately he was special, “He was just so correct. Everything was just so straight. And on top of that he was so personable.” No doubt she was the first to recognize the now famous Zefyr disposition. Unfortunately he was Pattrice’s last foal. Jennifer tried for three more years to breed her to Sundance Kid V, but was never able to produce a live foal.

As a three-year-old she sent Zefyr to trainer Mike Neal in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. “I was the first person to tell Jennifer Bird, Zefyr’s breeder, that he would make a great western pleasure horse,” says Mike Neal. “She sent him to me to show in halter because Francine Dismukes recommended me because she said I train my halter horses so that they can be ridden after.” Zefyr had a successful three-year-old halter year winning a stallion championship and a Region 10 Top Five. That fall, Katie Beck started him under saddle. She would guide his performance career for the next seven years. Like everyone who knows him, Mike Neal marveled at Zefyr’s great disposition.

“Katie would turn him loose in our indoor arena and they would play together. He was like a big dog,” said Neal. When Zefyr was a green broke four-year-old, Katie was telling friend and client Michelle Simms about the wonderful young western horse she was working. She was shocked when Michelle called the next day to say that she wanted to purchase him. That wasn’t the intent of the previous day’s conversation. She explained to Michelle that Zefyr was years away from being ready for her daughter Madeline, who was only ten at the time, to show. But their patience paid off when Madeline and Zefyr won the 2010 Youth National Champion Western Pleasure JTR 14-18 award. With Katie Beck he won U.S. Top Tens in Western Pleasure Junior Horse and later Western Pleasure Open. “I love that horse and he can live the rest of his life in my pasture. He holds a special place in my heart. He’s one of a kind,” says Beck.

“That first year in 2012 I had Zefyr I was just getting to know him, and it was an adjustment for him as well. He was third at the U.S. Nationals. The next year we really started to click. Zefyr won the Buckeye, Region 10, Region 11, and we were off and running,” says trainer Jody Strand. “Zefyr has always had a fan club, but at that point his popularity just took off.” After winning U.S. National Champion Western

Pleasure for the second time, Laura decided that they would take Zefyr to the 2015 Scottsdale show, but not for western pleasure. She knew it would be good to let the world see how beautiful, athletic, and charismatic he is at liberty.

The world responded. They received breeding interest from as far away as Qatar as a direct result. “It was fun,” says Strand. “We showed him in western attire. Everyone got to see him being him. We had tons of people come by the stalls. If I was busy I’d tell them ‘He’s in the first stall on the left — just go on in.’

They’d look at me like I was crazy. I think we booked more mares because of his personality than anything.” Zefyr has a few older foals that are showing now and winning at the national level. The vast majority of his foals are not yet training age. Strand sums his experience by saying, “The journey with Zefyr has really been fun. And I look forward to a time in the near future when there are many Zefyr offspring out there showing.”

Zefyr is the direct result of one family’s dedication to breeding great Arabian horses that began over fifty years ago. He has owners who believe implicitly in his greatness. And he has the good fortune of having a trainer who is his partner. Zefyr’s lineage predicted his destiny. Now this one-of-a-kind horse is poised to make history.

he halter showring is not the be-all and end-all of Arabian horse breeding, so let us take a look at a top performance horse for a change. Zefyr, a black stallion bred in 2002 by Jen Mar Arabians, has collected an impressive list of wins in western pleasure, including U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure in two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014. Behind this horse stands a who’s who of old, proven bloodlines that still deliver what Arabians originally stood for: beauty coupled with athletic ability.

Looking at Zefyr himself, it is immediately obvious that he carries the stamp of his sire, Sundance Kid V: black, with neat white markings, and himself a proven performance horse and a leading sire of western performance in the U.S. It will be worth looking at his pedigree another time; for now I’d just like to point out that he carries two crosses to the performance sire Huckleberry Bey, another two to *Bask, plus additional Polish lines. Polish and Russian bloodlines, having been selected for performance through many generations, are always good for athletic ability. Through his maternal grandsire Ali Jamaal, Sundance Kid V gets a good dose of showringcompatible beauty, too.

Against a sire of this caliber, Zefyr’s dam at first glance comes across as rather unremarkable. Foaled in 1984, Pattrice had only three registered foals, all of them colts, and Zefyr is her only offspring of distinction. She was bred

by Stephanie Anderson, who also bred her dam and her grandam, none of whom have much to show otherwise — everything just boils down to this one horse, Zefyr, who somehow emerged from a dam line that came very close to petering out on more than one occasion.

For all that Zefyr is her only produce of note, Pattrice represents top level 1980s breeding. Her sire *Pesniar was one of the most distinguished Russian stallions ever to come to the U.S. A former chief sire at Tersk, he was the designated successor to his sire Nabeg, the chief progenitor of the Bairactar DB sire line. Graded “Elite” at Tersk and used extensively there, *Pesniar sired a large number of both stallions and broodmares during the few years he was at stud. By 1980, American breeders had become aware of the outstanding Russian breeding program at Tersk, and interest in *Pesniar was high. However, he was not for sale. In late 1981, he made headlines by being sold after all, for no less than one million dollars, to OPL Associates, a consortium that included Armand Hammer of Occidental Petroleum and Lasma Arabians. He was only six years old at the time.

Besides being by the great Nabeg, *Pesniar also

came from one of the best mare families of Tersk.

Star Of The Hills, his great-great-great-grandam in tail female descent, was a Crabbet mare who in turn descended from the Ali Pasha Sherif mare, Sobha. *Pesniar’s dam, Pesnia (Aswan x Ptashka), was not much to look at herself, but Alexander Ponomarev, stud manager at Tersk at the time, claimed that “You can breed her to anything, even a goat,” and she’d still deliver excellence. Like her dam Ptashka before her, she was one of Tersk’s

most prized broodmares and was never sold. It should also be pointed out that Ptashka was a full sister to the great sires *Pietuszok and Topol, both of them proven progenitors of athletic ability.

Pattrice’s dam Baliz, foaled in 1972, was by the Polish stallion *Bask, the horse who almost singlehandedly revolutionized American breeding and established the “industry.” He also appears twice in the pedigree of Sundance Kid V, through two different daughters, Holly Bask and Spinning Song. As opposed to these two, Baliz was one of the lesser-known *Bask daughters, but she died when she was only 12 years old, in fact four weeks after giving birth to her last foal, Pattrice.

As we get to Baliz’s dam, Misti Lisa, we enter the territory of American foundation breeding. Misti Lisa was sired by the 1962 stallion Mister Storm, an impeccably bred and distinguished stallion in his time. Mister Storm was mostly of Crabbet/Old English breeding, a double grandson of the pure Crabbet Ferseyn, one of the great sires of his day. Mister Storm’s sire Royal Storm was by Ferseyn out of Bint Sahara, one of the greatest U.S. broodmares, dam of 18 registered foals and 11 class A champions. Royal Storm was a champion in halter and performance, and Mister Storm was U.S. National Futurity Champion in 1965, and a Legion of Merit winner. His dam’s pedigree traced back on both sides to the Crabbet foundation mare Rodania DB, to whom we shall return shortly.

Misti Lisa’s dam Nadisa was by Nasah, a stallion who is now largely forgotten, but one who sired quite a few horses in his day. He was certainly Looking at Zefyr, it is immediately obvious that he carries the stamp of his sire, Sundance Kid V (Desperado V x Sweet Shalimar V), pictured at left.

well-bred, 50 percent old Egyptian and the remainder Crabbet/OE, with a dam line to the Davenport mare *Urfah DB. Nadisa was out of Ladisa, who was by another forgotten, but wellbred stallion, Aldisa (Alyf x *Ferdisia). She was Ladisa’s only daughter, and Ladisa in turn was Aldisa’s only purebred offspring, as he was used mostly for breeding Half-Arabians. The interesting aspect here is that both of Ladisa’s parents, Aldisa and Lami, were bred by the Kellogg Ranch. First established in 1925 by cereal millionaire W. K. Kellogg, the Kellogg Ranch is said to have been as vital to American breeding in its time as Lasma was at a later date. Its foundation horses represented the best that money could buy at the time, including a significant number of horses imported directly from Crabbet Park, some pure Davenports purchased from Peter Bradley, who continued the original Davenport breeding program after Homer Davenport’s death, and additional horses of Crabbet and Davenport breeding from Maynesboro and Travelers Rest. After World War II, several Polish Arabians captured by the U.S.

army were added, the stud having been turned into a remount depot at that point. Aldisa and Lami, however, were foaled before that time and still represented the original foundation stock. Aldisa was all Crabbet except for one line to the French mare *Kola; Lami was also mostly Crabbet, with the addition of a few desertbred lines that also came from England, but were non-Crabbet. Lami’s sire was the very distinguished Rabiyas, who also sired the significant early sire Abu Farwa. Her dam Raad, who was trained as a harness horse, was out of the imported Crabbet mare *Rijma, who traced back through four generations to the original desertbred Rodania.

Foaled in 1869, Rodania holds the distinction of founding the largest and most global family of Arabians in the world. It is the only dam line that features prominently in every major Arabian

breeding country — Britain, Poland, Russia, Spain, Egypt, the United States, Australia, South Africa, and through exports everywhere else as well. She was 12 years old when Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt purchased her in the desert, a genuine, celebrated Bedouin war mare who bore scars from the fights through which she had carried her rider.

Bred by the Roala, she was a golden chestnut with a lighter mane, a color she passed on to her descendants and still very much in evidence today. Two other traits associated with Rodania are white rings around the eyes and an abundance of white markings. For the latter, she has often been maligned in the past, not entirely fairly.

White markings have been associated with her to such an extent that even distinguished authors have referred to her as having had four white feet.

Evidently without checking, because, in fact, she didn’t! Rodania herself had just one white foot, and a fairly modest blaze. Her most influential daughter, *Rose Of Sharon, did have a huge blaze and three white feet as well as the white-ringed eyes and the trademark light mane, but no one seems to have paid attention to the fact that it was her sire, Hadban DB, who had three white feet — not Rodania. The abundance of high white within the Crabbet gene pool cannot be “blamed” (if one wishes to) entirely on Rodania, but rather on the inevitable combination with the stallion Mesaoud, who did have high white on all four legs, as well as white spots. Since it is not possible to have the one without the other, one can’t put it all down to Rodania. Incredibly, and even more unfairly, her family has also been said to be incapable of producing superior stallions — an accusation that has proved untrue on more occasions than one could possibly list. Let it suffice to point out that

*Padron was a member of her family, as well as a perfect example of her influence and type!

Returning to Lami, she was not only a tail female descendant of Rodania, but absolutely steeped in that blood. Both her sire Rabiyas and her dam Raad were sired by stallions tracing to Rodania in tail female line, and out of dams that were double Rodania themselves, both through their sires and their dams. This adds up to six close crosses to Rodania. Raad’s sire Sidi was a maternal grandson of *Rose Of Sharon (Hadban DB x Rodania DB). Her dam *Rijma was by Rijm (out of *Rose Of Sharon) out of Risala, by Mesaoud out of Ridaa, again out of *Rose Of Sharon. And just for the record, Raad, with her three close crosses to *Rose Of Sharon, had hardly any white markings at all!

Raad was bred by W. R. Brown of Maynesboro Stud and was a distinguished broodmare in her time, both for Brown, where she produced the significant early sire Rahas, and for Kellogg. Lami was her last foal. From that point onwards, this branch carried on quietly and mostly unnoticed through the next five generations, being bred to increasingly superior sires, until — ignited by the spark of Sundance Kid V — it burst into its latest highlight: Zefyr.

There’s life in the heritage of the old war mare yet, and it is a heritage to be treasured and not forgotten.
