T
he breeders of Brazil have made immense contributions to the Arabian horse. Passionate and free-thinking, Brazilian breeders utilize a truly global array of bloodlines: Russian, Polish, Egyptian, Crabbet, and Spanish. They are also influenced by their northern American neighbor the U.S., as well as superior domestic blood. This potpourri of pedigrees has yielded a distinctive and sought after look, making Brazil a frequent destination for those in search of the Arabian ideal.
Included in any discussion of Brazil’s master breeders must be José Alves Filho and his wife Maisa Tucci Alves, the owners of Haras JM, located in the rolling farmland of Monte Mor, about an hour and a half outside the sprawling business center of São Paulo. With its 500 acres of lake-dotted pastures, 350 purebred Arabians, and 70 foals coming in 2012, it’s easy to see why the farm has been the fertile cradle of champion after champion for over 25 years. Breeder and Exhibitor award for nine consecutive years from 2004 to 2012. “I feel honored to have owned that title for half of its existence and even more to have been able to do it for so long consecutively!” Alves says. This alone is a significant accomplishment, but Alves also works tirelessly as the president of the ABCCA, donating his time to promote the breed in his native land. Domestic accomplishments aside, it was a bay filly from Haras JM’s foundation mare SL White Lace (Strike x Four Winds Flare by
Four Winds Flag) that brought the farm, and more specifically Mr. Alves, international acclaim and recognition for his efforts as a breeder. SL White Lace was bred in the U.S. by Linda and Sathaporn Vathayanon and imported by Alves to Haras JM in 1992. “White Lace was my foundation, and gave the farm much of my early success,” Alves says. SL White Lace was sold with a breeding to Ali Jamaal. The future super sire, however, was not so well-known at that point.

“I had no idea who this stallion was,” Alves says with a chuckle, “but we decided to purchase her anyway.” Soon after SL White Lace’s arrival in Brazil, she was bred to resident super sire Ali Jamaal. The resulting nearly all-bay filly, with just a wisp of white between her eyes, would carry the banner for Haras JM around the world, winning National championships in Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, Europa El Jamaal was never given the farm initials JM when she was registered. “I had a friend who counseled me against doing that at the time,” Alves says.with a smile. “I have always regretted that.” He explains, “Europa El Jamaal gave Haras JM the opportunity to be known all over the world in the Arabian horse industry. Many have told me she is one of the greatest mares of all time, something I take great pride in. It is one of those very special mares that you do not want to let go of but know you must in order to get international recognition.” Europa El Jamaal was purchased by HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan Abdul Aziz of Al Khalediah, Saudi Arabia. The sale, however, opened
the doors, and breeders, especially those from Brazil and the U.S., started looking to Haras JM for international quality show stock. Europa El Jamaal was sold at four years of age and left no descendants at Haras JM. The influence through her dam SL White Lace is significant, however. Among the daughters of SL White Lace are Godiwa JM (by Kaali JP), Jarytza di Style JM (by Style SRA), Fantasia Castana (Barich de Washoe x Jamal Colleen), and homebred Hestoriah JM (NV Sure Fire x Nyska HCF). “These mares are major contributors to the foundation of my program,” explains Alves. “They have created many mare families for me, and my program would not be where it is today without them.” One of the mares that Alves is most proud of is the latest of his champions, the 2012 Brazilian National Champion Mare Piettra di Style JM. The exotic chestnut mare is by JM herd sire Style SRA (Bey Shah x Sociallite) and out of Divine NVC by CG Balih El Jamaal. “She is a future broodmare for my program. She is very, very special to me. Piettra is so sweet, kind, and charismatic, everyone on the farm loves her. At this year’s Nationals people from all over Brazil were cheering for her. It really touched me, and was

the most emotional time for me that I have experienced in the Arabian business.” Haras JM stands 10 stallions, and each serves a specific purpose. “Our stallion lineup is based on the cornerstone sires of the breed,” Alves explains. “Bey Shah, Ali Jamaal, Padrons Psyche, and Marwan Al Shaqab need no introduction and have made their own special contributions to the breed with their individual characteristics. It is why breeders from around the
globe have infused their blood into their programs. I have done the same by purchasing sons of these great stallions and experimenting with their daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters as to what my ideal Arabian horse should be.” Nearest to Alves’s heart was the charismatic bay son of Bey Shah, Style SRA (out of Sociallite). Since his death, it is with emotion that Alves speaks of him. “Style was the highlight of my program for many years. He was the foundation and the heart and

soul of my program. His son Mister Style JM, out of Jaklanna JM by Jahd El Jamaal, is very special to me since I have bred him myself. Style took my program to another level and I will be forever grateful to him. The significance of Mister is to carry on his sire’s legacy.” With the popularity of Padrons Psyche, JM sought to introduce this blood through his son Pscore. “Pscore, to me, is a bay version of his magnificent sire Padrons Psyche,” explains Alves. “He brings to my program size, substance, and beauty along with wonderful conformation that he passes on to his foals.” And in a Brazilian breeding operation, it is inevitable that Ali Jamaal would be used. “In my opinion, the influence of Ali Jamaal in any program is a must! But it is just as important to use it correctly. The blood of Ali Jamaal via Haras JM stallions comes twofold. First, the dark bay form of Jullyani (Jullyen Al Jamaal x Gai Sharise by Bey Shah). He brings that Ali Jamaal sexiness and flamboyancy with great carriage and very pretty typey offspring. What I love

about Jullyani is that he is sired by Jullyen El Jamaal who is out of the incredible Ludjin El Jamaal daughter Jullye El Ludjin. Jullye El Ludjin is breathtaking to anyone who has seen her. It thrills me to have the influence of her blood represented so strongly in my program.” The second source of Ali Jamaal at Haras JM is the exotic Yllan El Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Acuity). “He is one of the best siring Jamaal sons in the world,” says Alves. “It was with great pride that I was able to acquire him to be used at Haras JM exclusively. He is so much like his father and I feel he will create an entirely new generation for my mare families to be outcrossed with my other stallions.” A new addition to the Haras JM stallion roster is Perignon (Marwan 7 ▪ HARAS JM ▪ WORLD
Al Shaqab x Psychic Karma by Padrons Psyche). Acquired in the U.S. from breeders Michael Byatt and Miguel Muzquiz, he was brought in to fill a specific role in the JM herd. “Let’s face it, in today’s world it is very hard to be successful without Marwan Al Shaqab in your breeding program. I purchased Perignon to give an extended refinement to my herd and that Marwan hook in the poll and throatlatch. I love what he has sired and I will never sell him.” One of the latest to join the JM roster is Sir Fames HBV (Ffames x Cajun Lady HCF by Cajun Prince HCF). Bred by good friend Luciano Cury, the charismatic bay was purchased by Alves from Bob and Dixie North of North Arabians, who imported him as a yearling to the U.S. “Bob and Dixie are such dear friends, it was a pleasure to work with them on this. And Sir Fames’s first foals here in Brazil are outstanding, I am looking forward to what he can bring to my program.” As Haras JM looks to the future, it will be a multinational operation. Recently Alves purchased 16 acres in Florida for a U.S. base of operations. The idea being that Brazilian-bred horses would be sent north to be prepared for the key North American shows, including U.S. Nationals, Canadian Nationals, Scottsdale, and the Vegas World Cup. Alves says, “I want to be a notable breeder, not only in Brazil, but in the United States as well. In the future, I plan to divide my time between Brazil and America.” Haras JM, a consistent breeder of champions, has left an indelible mark upon the breed. Philosophically, Alves relates what he hopes his program will be most remembered for. “I would be honored for Haras JM to be remembered as one of the top five Brazilian halter breeders, but I would also like to be remembered for the versatile Arabian horses we bred as well. Not just as breeding program that has a lot of quality horses, but one that works to enrich the entire Arabian horse community.”
