Mon Bandaid +/ 1977-2009

As I watched Mon through the last months of his life, with the awareness that this day was approaching, I began to reflect on what he had accomplished in addition to his show ring awards. Little could I foresee as a teenager of 16 how influential one horse’s life would be on my life.

He gave a young girl confidence to believe in herself and realize that she could accomplish any dream through determination and fortitude. He taught me the thrill of success a thousand times over, but more importantly, he taught me how to accept disappointments with grace and humility. He was a unifying force which forged bonds of love and understanding between a child and her parents that can never be broken. He gave me the opportunity to meet the most wonderful people in the world whom I am now privileged to call friends. He taught me about unconditional love, sacrifice, and trust along with the responsibility that

they bring toward those whom we love. He gave me the strength to make the difficult decision to end his life when I looked into his wise eyes and knew the time had come. It was almost as if he was telling me that his job here was done and that he feels I can go on without him now.

Every horse that I have known, I have loved deeply and they are all special in their own way, but there is no love like a first love.

I know that there is a spot in my heart that will always be sad at his passing but my life has been so blessed to have had the privilege of loving this special soul that I know the memories will slowly dull the heartache. Good-bye, Mon. I wish you peace, old friend.
