2018 Breeders of the Year Maroon Fire Arabians And Shea Stables by CHRISTY EGAN

Once again, Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians, closely followed in the listings by partners, Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables, are the year’s leading AEPA breeders. Of the Top Ten leading AEPA sires (by number of winners), Afire Bey V and his sons account for horses named 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th (tie) and 6th, while his stablemate, IXL Noble Express+ and his sons took 3rd, 7th (tie) and 8th (tie) positions. And, if you take into account that Afire Bey V is also grandsire of the 7th (tie) placing horse, SF Aftershoc, that leaves just two horses on the list not influenced by Maroon Fire and Shea Stables breeding. Historically, the Shea-owned and bred stallion Brave and Noble (IXL Noble Express+) won the 2008 AEPA Futurity at Scottsdale. Brave and Noble has since gone on to be named a national champion and reserve, at Youth and Canadian National shows, as well as a multi-top ten. The Maroon Fire Arabiansowned and bred, Noble Ffyre+/ (IXL Noble Express+) won both the AEPA Buckeye Yearling In-Hand Futurity in 2011 and the AEPA $100,000 Arabian Futurity in 2014. Noble Ffyre+/ added national championship honors at both Canada and U.S. this year. Naturally, these breeders are most proud of their 2017 AEPA

$100,000 Saddle Seat Futurity winner, Inception, owned and bred by Maroon Fire Arabians and shown to the coveted title unanimously by Joel Kiesner. This year, Kiesner and Inception marched back into Tulsa and won the Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse … again, unanimously. Additionally, the handsome blood bay son of IXL Noble Express+ and Bonita Afire (Afire Bey V x Bacharah, by Barbary) welcomed his first foal crop in 2018. A visit to Shea Stables in Michigan is a great consideration for any Arabian owner or breeder this winter or spring. It’s fascinating just to study the unique consistency of their bloodstock at this stage in its development. From their beginnings, heavily influenced by *Eter, Barbary, Huckleberry Bey, Afire Bey V and IXL Noble Express+, Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables have created a very specific “type” of Arabian. The program’s current culmination finds that its brightest star is right at home. Inception’s first offspring exhibit impeccable conformation, with upright necks, attitude, quality and extreme consistency. Balance and size are also obvious assets inherited from their 15.2 hand sire. Delightfully, there is a great deal of Arabian type, beauty and character among the weanlings.

A detailed study of Inception’s conformation, quality and action, shows many of the finest characteristics and attributes of the Varian breeding program. But this beautiful, living product of the Liniger’s Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables has gone a further step up to uncharted heights. A stallion obviously made up of the best of the MHR Nobility, Barbary and Huckleberry Bey influences, Inception is also taller, smoother, more athletic in his talent and motion, better and longer set in the neck and more cadenced and balanced. Trainer and horseman Joel Kiesner said last year, that Inception appears to have gleaned all of the finest characteristics of each of his forbears and virtually none of their shortcomings. This year he added that, “Inception’s now won two major U.S. National English titles unanimously. He bred about a hundred mares last year while in full-time training. He’s among the elite … a unique and gifted horse.” Perhaps he will be the stallion to usher in the Arabian English show horse of the future. ■

THE ARABIAN ENGLISH PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION with Peter Conway, President Being the first of the major disciplines to start a futurity program, how important do you feel these programs are to the state of our breed? It became very apparent to everyone how impactful the AEPA Futurity was for the saddle seat division. All of us were extremely pleased when the AWPA and then the AHPA followed suit. We helped the Board of the AWPA in every way we could when they were in their formative stages. Clearly these futurities are great for the Arabian breed. From a personal viewpoint, as someone that breeds for all three disciplines, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be happier. We also owe thanks to AHA and the National Show Commission for supporting these programs. It is gratifying when everyone works together for the breed as a whole. What makes the AEPA so unique and sets you apart from the others? Being first meant we had the chance to create a successful blueprint and a tradition of excellence. A major difference in our program is the ease of use for breeders. Simply breed to an enrolled sire and the foal is in the program. No extra paperwork or any fees involved. We are also growing our amateur participation. The Ohio Buckeye AEPA Strawberry Banks Farm Country Pleasure AAOTR Maturity, and now the Scottsdale AEPA Conway Arabians Country Pleasure AAOTR Maturity allow amateur owners on aged horses to compete for significant prize money. Just buy horses that were sired by enrolled stallions and you are eligible for the classes. From the Yearling In-Hand class to the Country AAOTR Maturity at the Buckeye, will there be any new classes in 2019? We discontinued the yearling class a few years ago because it was not accomplishing the goals of the AEPA (primarily increased participation in the saddle seat division). The Strawberry Banks Farm Buckeye Country AAOTR Maturity, on the other hand, continues to grow. As mentioned above, we have added a new class at Scottsdale. Open to horses 5 years and older that were sired by AEPA enrolled stallions. The AEPA Conway Arabians Scottsdale Country pleasure AAOTR Maturity Championship will award $20,000 in prize money each year. What incentive is there to purchase a breeding on the AEPA Stallion Service Auction in January? Every dollar raised in the Auction goes strictly to prize money. I think everyone can feel good knowing that when they purchase a breeding through the auction, they are not only supporting the stallion owner, but also the breed as a whole. It is the right thing to do! On top of that, the foals that are the result of an auction breeding can win an extra 25% prize money in the $100,000 class at U.S. Nationals. *** Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors.
