People outside the Woodlands community often ask me how the Woodlands educational experience is distinct, and what makes our school stand out among all others.
For me, it all comes down to our mission. As a Sacred Heart school, Woodlands Academy is guided by the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education. More than just words, these Goals and Criteria are integrated into daily life at Woodlands.
They are demonstrated and reinforced by our faculty, staff, and coaches—talented and caring people who support, encourage, and challenge each of our students individually to pursue their passions and to become their best versions of themselves.
Through this transformational experience, Woodlands students learn who they are. They graduate filled with confidence and ready to live their lives as young women of faith, integrity, action, and leadership.
During the 2022-2023 year, Woodlands’ strength and exceptionalism was on display in so many ways. Over the course of the year, Woodlands:
• Was ranked the #1 Catholic school in Illinois, the #1 Best All-Girls School in Illinois, and among the Top Ten Best All Girls Boarding Schools in the country by Niche, an independent research company.
• Welcomed our new Head of School, Dr. Susan Tyree Dempf—a lifelong Sacred Heart student, educator, and leader.
• Earned Platinum with Access rating, the highest level of recognition awarded, by the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll. This award is earned through our demonstrated commitment to creating a college attending culture, maximizing college readiness, and providing opportunities to earn college credit, all while maintaining a percentage of AP exam takers who mirror the school’s overall underrepresented minority group and/or low-income student populations.
• Held 18 student-planned and -hosted Catholic Services.
• Volunteered more than 2,000 hours to local non-profit organizations.
• Produced the plays “Steel Magnolias” and “High School Musical.”
• Prevailed at the Heritage WorldStrides Music Festival in Nashville, with Gold ratings for two choirs and our orchestra once again.
• Vied for state titles, both individually and through teams, at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Contest. Every year that Woodlands has entered this competition, we have progressed to the state level.
• Scored the Regional Soccer Championship title after a season of playing on Woodlands’ newly rejuvenated soccer field.
• Advanced to the Scholastic Bowl Team Small School Nationals.
• Competed at the All-Girls Chess Nationals.
• Hosted and learned from two speakers in our “Imagine Yourself in the C-Suite” speaker series: Chevy Humphrey, CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry; and Christine McGrath, Chief Sustainability, Well Being, Public and Government Affairs Officer of Mondelez International.
• Led a “21-Day Equity Challenge” for students and adult community members, which focused on topics including healthcare accessibility, food insecurity, and educational accessibility. Through this experience, Woodlands students came to understand that education for girls is not a given throughout the world, as well as exploring the actions they can take to help make a difference in the lives of others.
