Farewell to

AQUINAS COLLEGE Ten years ago I decided that I needed to relocate from Mildura to Melbourne, with my family, so that I could join the Aquinas community and it was the best decision of my professional life.

If

you are of a certain age you will remember the transistor radio (pictured) and long before there was Spotify and Airpods this was a fixture in many homes. My family home had a transistor radio in the kitchen playing almost continuously on the horse racing station and this continued until my father passed away a couple of years ago.

We had a noisy home anyway, but, in the background, you would hear “correct weight at Rosehill'' or “they're entering the barriers for the 5th from Moonee Valley”. Like living on a busy street, your ears eventually learnt to block out the sound and it became invisible.

Why am I sharing this with you as I bid you all farewell?

A transistor radio had a dial to tune the radio to the station you wanted. As you turned the dial, there was static and then the station would start to get clearer and if you kept turning the dial the station would begin to fade and the static would resume. Sometimes, often on a clear and cold night, when things were still, you could hear a strange 4

sound. In the background, you would hear a second voice, very quiet and hard to hear clearly - the transistor radio was picking up another far away radio station broadcasting on the same frequency. If you really concentrated, sometimes you could hear what was being broadcast, but usually the level of noise made it indecipherable. But I was fascinated by this ghost broadcast. Who was this mystery person? What was their message?

I wonder …

Is this what it’s like when we are struggling to hear God? Is God trying to communicate with us but is drowned out by the static caused by the busyness and distraction of our days? If we were able to quieten our minds, would we hear God come through the static? Could we tune in if we concentrated? What if we could get rid of the noise?

I trust God talks to me. Ten years ago I decided that I needed to relocate from Mildura to Melbourne, with my family, so that I could join the Aquinas community and it was the best decision of my professional life. Now God is telling me that my work is elsewhere. How do I know it is God talking?

Because the decision to leave is harder than the decision to stay - but I know that it is the right decision. It’s hard to leave Aquinas as it is a place of welcome, a place of kindness and a place of inclusion. It has become my home.

We are blessed with delightful young people who say "good morning Mr Atkinson", or simply smile when I pass them in the yard. There’s also the occasional little wave when I pass their classroom and it is these small gestures that help to indicate that they are learning in an environment in which

they feel safe and supported. I will miss each of them very much. I thank parents and carers for trusting us with your most precious gifts.

We are blessed with a learning community of talented and committed teachers. To the extent that you are able, I ask that you promote respect for teachers and those who support them. It can be the most rewarding of professions, yet we are finding that young people do not aspire to join the ranks in anywhere near the numbers we need to meet even the current levels of demand. I trust that you can remember a favourite teacher and their characteristics. Usually, it was how they made you feel rather than the subject content that they taught that is lasting.

We are blessed with a connected community, including many Old Collegians who choose to send their own children to Aquinas. It is the humble origins of the College, founded by local parishes and built on the contributions of parish families that have helped create our character. Of course, the magnificent resources that our students can access today would have been unimaginable to our founders.

Finally, the privilege of being asked to steward our College over the last decade is not lost on me. I leave with very fond memories and much gratitude.

Lord, we pray that you will continue to offer us your guidance, comfort and shelter, even when we cannot hear you amidst all of the other noise. Please keep this community that I cherish in the palm of your hand.

A Decade With 1.When you walked in the doors at Aquinas College, what stood out about this school?

The most noticeable thing about Aquinas as you entered the school are its beautiful grounds and gardens.

It is green and lush, birdlife abounds and there is a sense of spaciousness that allows you to breathe deeply. Of course, then you faced the challenge of finding Reception - a problem that I am glad to say has been fixed this year. Many visitors tell me that they were rescued by a friendly student who pointed them in the right direction as part of the famous “Aquinas Welcome”. Aquinas is a strongly interconnected community, very similar in many regards to the country town that I left to come to Melbourne.

3. Over your time at Aquinas, you have been able to get into the classroom and teach RE and Humanities across varied year levels. How important has this been for you?

Principals are first and foremost teachers and when asked what we miss most we invariably talk about the loss of student contact in the classroom. With wonderful collegial support, I’ve tried to help out by taking a class that we cannot otherwise cover. However, I’ve also reflected: “Am I teaching for my benefit, or for the benefit of the students?” Hopefully the answer is both, but when repeatedly called away to other obligations it might be that the students feel as though they are short changed. I hope that those who have been assigned my class feel that it was helpful - even if just to have a laugh at their Principal struggling to remember how to log in to the technology.

2. The job of a Principal comes with a truckload of challenges and rewards.

What has been most challenging firstly and then the most rewarding if you can narrow it down?

A joint report of the Australian Principals associations in 2007 was titled “The Best Job in the World with some of the Worst Days Imaginable”. 10. Things you will miss, in just a few words.

11, You personify a hopeful spirit and a love of learning - two attributes we want our students to leave Aquinas with. How can we each bring these to our day to day lives?

In our staff news each fortnight I write under the heading: What am I reading? I include any professional reading, but also the novels that I am reading for pleasure. A love of learning is about curiosity and, while domain based learning is a secondary teacher’s core business, the most interesting teachers seem to also be storytellers. So, my advice to students is to go deep, but also go wide - be interested in our amazing world (as well as your social media feed). It’s hard not to have a hopeful spirit when you work in a school like Aquinas and believe in the message of Jesus Christ. Sure, an optimistic disposition also helps, but our young people display kindness and resilience each day.

There is a lot about Aquinas College that I will miss. That’s how I know it is time to go. The College is in a good space - that doesn’t mean that there are no challenges - but the foundation is strong.

There are many incredible people at the College who are interested in the wellbeing of others, first and foremost, and I will miss these individuals especially.

12. As you walk out the Aquinas gates for the last time, what do you take away with you?

A remarkable artwork for a start! Thank you to the College for this amazing gift. I take a decade of rich experience and deep learning that I will, hopefully, be able to use in the interest of the St Mary’s community next year. I take only fond memories. What a blessing to be able to leave a workplace after a decade with deep feelings of gratitude for the privilege of being trusted to lead the best school in Melbourne.

The Valedictory Dinner was a wonderful event that marked the end of an era and the beginning of new adventures.

The atmosphere was charged with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation as we gathered to celebrate the many accomplishments achieved throughout the last six years. We were also able to recognise a large number of students who have demonstrated our six core values throughout their time at Aquinas - Belonging, Stewardship, Perseverance, Justice, Compassion and Spirituality. Congratulations to these students on their contributions and associated awards. Sharing a meal together, exchanging stories, and expressing gratitude, the Valedictory Dinner served as a fitting tribute to the bonds forged and the memories created during the students’ time at Aquinas.

The conclusion of the night displayed the singing of the school song with the most gusto we have seen for some time.

As they step into the next chapter of their lives, we hope that they carry the memories of this year—the challenges overcome, the friendships forged, and the knowledge gained. The Class of 2023 has left an indelible mark on our school, and we have no doubt that they will continue to make a positive impact wherever life takes them.

The Class of 1980 reunion was held on 14 October at the Mitcham Football Club.

It was a wonderful evening, with around 70 attendees over the night. Many had not maintained regular connections with old classmates so it was a reunion in the true sense of the word.

Lots of life-updates and school memories were shared. It was apparent that old friendships have strong bonds that can't be broken even after years of separation. Many of us shared contact details to make the next reunion (45 years in 2025) easier to organise.

Siân Kavanagh graduated from Aquinas College in 2017. Siân has always been an advocate for both the environment and for the justice of those less fortunate. She has a passion to make a difference in the world. She has shared with us details of her recent travels and the incredible opportunities experienced.

AQUINAS ALU After graduating from a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Health Sciences in 2023, I had a yearning to deepen my understanding of how I can live my life in a way that reflects my passions for sustainability and wellbeing.

I booked a one-way ticket overseas and embarked on a learning journey with the aid of Workaway to find opportunities to travel with purpose. Workaway provides volunteers with food and accommodation in exchange for work with host families and community projects, and I spent many months doing so across Europe and Morocco.

In Spain, I journeyed to ‘Green Rebel Farm’ in the mountains of Catalonia where I worked on a family project transforming degraded land into a regenerative agroforestry farm.

Green Rebel aims to combat climate change, improve biodiversity and supply surrounding villages with quality organic food.

Regenerative agroforestry involves methods that are more aligned with nature and that seek to rejuvenate land and enhance food security. At the farm we prepared garden beds that mimic natural ecosystems by planting diverse tree and shrub species with productive crops – meeting the needs of both the ecological environment and the people whose lives depend on the land.

This is critical in southeastern Spain, where climate change is increasingly turning the region to desert, degrading soil and inducing droughts.

Across the ocean in Morocco, I found myself in a similar context in a remote village in the Zagora desert. Due to climate change, increasingly scarce food and water resources are uprooting the Berber nomads from their traditional lifestyles in the desert to seek subsistence in urban areas.

M’Barek, a Berber nomad, experienced this firsthand and is now devoting himself to caring for Mother Earth through his ‘Romana Garden’ project. I volunteered with Romana Garden to co-design their vision of creating a self-sufficient forest garden on their land using the permaculture principles of ‘earth care, people care, fair share’. In turn, local livelihoods would be supported by teaching regenerative farming methods and opportunities to produce traditional handicrafts. In this way, I can see clearly how both social and environmental justice are deeply intertwined.

These experiences helped me realise the importance of being a steward of life – of taking care of the land in ways that leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Indigenous peoples across the world – such as the Berbers – offer rich ecological knowledge and adaptive solutions to global crises that are critical in preserving life.

Listening to and learning from indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing is critical in our capacity to restore planetary health.

We have a responsibility to care for the land which cares for us and to live in ways that not only sustain our own livelihoods, but rejuvenate the health of the planet and those who call it home.

I returned home from my travels with the intention of integrating what I had learnt and applying it to my local life in Melbourne – both in my career pursuits in sustainable development as well as my personal life of learning how to be an active community member. The learning continues!

Jack and Patrick Pierce, known to many as musicians called the Pierce Brothers, former students from 2006 and recipients of our Leading Lights Award, already have a full and successful music career, travelling the world touring and making new music in 2023 called Studio. However, they have landed their most revierved gig yet - featuring on the ABC’s playschool on 13th and 16th November!

You had a massive world tour nearly 10 years ago headlining venues all over the globe, and playing arenas supporting Tash Sultana, as well as massive AAA festivals in North America, Europe, and Australia. I’m guessing this tour offered a huge career highlight for you both. What were your favourite countries and venues?. Were any of those moments you looked at each other and couldn’t believe how far you had come and where you were?

You have had such a successful music career already - How does appearing on Playschool rate amongst your impressive music line up of achievements? It seems to be something that has created quite a lot of interest and is something that you should be so proud of!

It also seems your biggest fans were huge fans of you appearing on Playschool - proud parenting moment i’m sure!

Haha I’ll be honest, it’s up there with one of the coolest things we’ve ever done. When Play School reached out to our team, we jumped at the opportunity! It’s a show that’s been going since 1966, and an absolute institution in Australia, so it was a real privilege to be a part of it! Watching my children react to it when it first aired was a very special moment. It’s something that I was sooo stoked to be able to do for them!

I still remember the first time walking onstage to 10,000 people at a festival in Europe. We’d never played a gig in Europe before! I couldn’t believe it then (and I can’t really now to be honest!), and I remember Pat looking at me and saying, It’s just busking!! They’ve never heard us, so we need to make them listen, just like busking! Except they’re actually here for music!!

We’ve been incredibly lucky over the years that we’ve been able to share the stage with some of our favourite artists, and play to some MASSIVE audiences. Touring around the world with Tash was certainly one of the bright spots in our career, and I think something that will always replay in my head will be walking out onstage to open the main stage for a festival called Colors of Ostrava in the Czech Republic; with 60,000 people in the audience, it’s something I won’t ever forget!

What plans have you got coming up for 2024?

It sounds like a big year coming up for you! A new single out now must be an exciting lead up to a New Year ahead.

We have a massive year ahead, I’m actually kind of daunted a bit haha! A new album is planned (but not yet announced), a European tour, and a massive Australian tour currently in the works, we’re going to be busy!!

K THE BIG TIME

You are already a recipient of the Aquinas “Leading Lights” award. What did this award mean to you and how did it make you feel to be acknowledged by the school where you attended? Were you involved in the school music program when you were at Aquinas and if so any fond memories?

You have lived out your dream of headlining a booked out Forum Theatre in your hometown of Melbourne. How much did it mean to you both that you could do this in the town you grew up in? What is another favourite place to play in Australia that holds special meaning to you?

We have PLENTY of fond memories of the Aquinas music program. From the many musicals we were a part of, to forgetting all the lyrics at a full school assembly to “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” and then just kind of stumbling on (remember to practice people!!!), to the many rehearsals and jamming that had taken place in those music rooms with our peers. It was the best part of our time there, and while we were never that good at the technical side of music, we were always inspired to explore the vibe of music; and that’s what really made the difference to us.

Terrifying. Honestly, when we put our name to the Forum I was terrified. We had never done something that big and I was honestly worried about how we’d do. But working with an incredible team in our management and agents, we set forth working towards selling it out, and we got damn close!! The big thing you worry about is having a vibe in the room and that room was HEAVING when we stepped onstage! I’ll never forget it! It’s always scary when you take a big step like that, but far more rewarding when it all comes together! Yeah, it was a dream come true!

Being invited back to receive the Leading Lights award was awesome, and has been a great honour for us to be recognised by a place that helped us so much in our musical journey.

Another favourite place to play in Australia would have to be the Corner Hotel in Richmond. That was (and still is) one of our favourite places for live music. It has vibes for days!!

Some former international students from the class of 2021, visited the campus to say hello to teachers. It was delightful to see Alice, Fiona, Kiki and Danny again, and to hear how they are learning, enjoying student life in Melbourne, and thriving as confident young people.

Alice (Luxue) Hong whose passion is design, is studying Industrial Design Honours at RMIT as she continues to develop her creativity and design skills. Alice’s Year 12 Design and Technology project based on the unique structure of a pomegranate, was included in the Top Designs 2022 displayed at the Melbourne Museum.

Fiona Wang is studying Psychology at Melbourne University and is planning a holiday in Queensland.

Fiona plays the flute and was a valued member of the band at Aquinas, but has been distracted by her duties as an aunt to her adorable niece in China.

Kiki Jiang is studying Digital Analysis at Melbourne University and is considering playing tennis again now that she has settled into her studies.

Danny Liu is back at the Parkville Melbourne University campus after spending a semester at their Dookie campus, as part of his studies in Agriculture.

It was with great excitement that our incoming Year 7's for 2024 arrived for their Orientation Day. It’s a fantastic day filled with new activities and experiences and it provides the chance to start to meet and make new connections.
