CONSERVATIONGROUP NEWSLETTER

2024 PLANTING SEASON

The Mt Henry Peninsula Conservation Group & Aquinas College recently received over 200 donated Tubestock from the City of South Perth for the 2024 Planting Season

Donated Species include:

Bossiaea eriocarpa; also known as the Common Brown Pea

Allocasuarina fraseriana; also known as Sheoak

Jacksonia furcellata also known as Grey Stinkwood

Scholtzia involucrata; also known as the Spiked Scholtzia

Melaleuca seriata; also known as Melaleuca

These species were selected by the dedicated Nursery Team at the City of South Perth as they are existing natives within the peninsula and will complement the species we received last year

Tubestock refers to young plants grown in seedling pots and is the preferred way of planting when compared to seeds. Tubestock typically have higher survival rates due to them overcoming the most vulnerable stage of their life cycle, which is the germination and the early seedling phase. The welldeveloped root system enables tube stock to compete more effectively with weeds for water, nutrients, and sunlight.

We thank the Team at the City of South Perth for their ongoing support and look forwards to seeing what is on offer next year.

JUNIOR SCHOOL BUSH CARE

5R, 5B and 5W students have busily been working on mulching the track and have managed to achieve almost 100m+ of mulching It is great to see the boys getting in on the action and having a great time

The start of next term we will work with the Year 6 students. I wonder how much mulching they will be able to achieve?

THURSDAY AFTER SCHOOL BUSH CARE

Our Middle school students continued to work hard during Thursday After School Bush Care despite the small numbers and a rained out session.

Goals were achieved in preventing litter from entering Aquinas Bay and over 50 tubestock were planted in our 2024 Revegetation site.

SATUDAY BUSH CARE

Saturday Bush Care has been super successful since EXEAT with the students and the volunteers working hard at the mulch pit. An additional 90m of track was completed in a single weekend. Hopefully next term there is more mulch available and the boys can shift their focus to the track along the freeway which is significantly degraded.

While at Week 10 Bush Care, students worked hard to plant all remaining plants in the grounds before the holidays. Plant guards were installed around several species to help give them the best chance at survival The area will be monitored over the weeks to come to ensure they are receiving adequate water.

The new term will also see the boys begin the Weed Picking duties where they compete to see who can remove the most; the biggest; and the smallest Pink Gladioli & Yellow Solider.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

It has been a successful term at the McDougall Farm Community Garden with yet another harvest donated to the the families at Curtin Primary School.

PLASTIC FREE JULY

MAGAZINE ARTICLE

We are thrilled to share that the MHPCG was recently featured in the “mySouthPerth Magazine” and on the City of South Perth Website for our Bush Care Program. The write up was a great way to share what we do to maintain our Banksia Bushland and fantastic publicity for the group

You can read the article here: http://tiny.cc/mhpcgbushcare

Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution and refuse single-use plastics.

Australia produces almost 3 million tonnes of plastic per annum, of which less than 12% is recycled Alarmingly, up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic will wind up in the ocean as plastic pollution each year (WWF Australia). We are lucky to have the beautiful Canning River on the our doorstep and we all need to work together to keep our marine fauna alive and healthy.

Some easy swaps include:

Bring a reusable drink bottle

Remember to use those reusable bags at the shops

Take your reusable cup to your local Cafe for your coffee

By swapping from juice boxes to cordial in Stainless Steel Cups we have already prevented 320 juice boxes going into landfill from our Bush Care Sessions this year alone!
