Dear Colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to attend the 11th Annual Association of Aquatic Professionals Conference and Exposition February 5 -10, 2022, at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Over the past 11 years, the Annual Conference and Exposition has become the premiere gathering for aquatic professionals to showcase their success stories, network with peers, develop organizational partnerships, and hear from speakers willing to share their tips, techniques, and experiences for the benefit of our profession. Through the Annual Conference and Exposition, the Conference - Educational Committee aims to provide attendees with practical, hands-on experiences so they may return home with relevant, actionable plans to improve their drowning prevention, programming, leadership, risk management, technical operations and overall facility management efforts. Speakers will present topics which have real-world application for aquatics professionals, that will help all of us address the challenges and shape the future of the aquatics profession. Educational tracks include: Drowning Prevention, Risk Management, Staff Training, Leadership, Programming, Design, Aquatic Therapy, Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion, University, and Facility Operation, as well as a new Model Aquatic Health Code Track presented by the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC). The Annual Conference and Exposition provides an exciting opportunity for sponsoring organizations to showcase their products and services to aquatic professionals from across the country. In addition to our general sessions, the conference offers concurrent session tracks that will allow attendees the opportunity to customize their learning experiences. As part of the conference festivities, the Association also offers various networking and social opportunities. We look forward to seeing you in St. Pete Beach.

ABOUT AOAP The Association of Aquatic Professionals (AOAP) is an international association with approximately 1600 members who serve as aquatic leaders in various roles. AOAP is a domestic 501(c)3 non-profit corporation run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and a fulltime Executive Director/CEO. The AOAP exclusively: • Promotes and advocates policies, practices, and procedures that contribute to safer and improved aquatic education, aquatic recreation activities, programs and facilities; • Provides and supports quality aquatic education opportunities; • Coordinates and sponsors research in the field of aquatic management and safety; • Promotes coordination and cooperation between established aquatic associations responsible for aquatic management, operation, maintenance, and facility design; • Provides an annual conference and educational opportunities for communities on drowning prevention and education.

A portion of all proceeds goes towards drowning prevention programs such as Grants for Learn to Swim Lessons and Lifejackets.

EARN CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS The Association of Aquatic Professionals (AOAP) provides CEUs that may be used toward the AqP designation, AFO recertification, CPRP renewal, and more.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS (CEUs) Attendees must fill out the CEU evaluation form for all pre- and post-conference workshops, general sessions, and breakout sessions to qualify for CEUs. Partial credit is neither granted for any session, nor granted until completion of the individual session. $25 fee to receive CEUs (includes AOAP PreConference workshop and tour in addition to regular AOAP Conference Sessions).

VERIFICATION OF PARTICIPATION

Continuing education credit will be given to those individuals who have viewed the entire presentation and completed the evaluation of session attendance. The number of contact hours accumulated depends on the number of sessions attended. The lecture, breakout session, or workshop must be attended in its entirety to receive credit. Partial credit is neither granted for any session, nor granted until completion of the individual session. Once criteria is met, a CEU transcript is awarded to the participant.

The Association of Aquatic Professionals partners with groups to offer additional training in conjunction with the conference. OPENING KEYNOTE AND AMERICAN RED CROSS AWARDS - ELIZABETH BEISEL, OLYMPIAN MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7 - 9:45 A.M. - 11:15 A.M.

Elizabeth Beisel is a three-time Olympic swimmer for the United States. In 2008, she qualified for her first Olympic Games as the youngest competitor of the United States Olympic Team at 15 years old. At the 2012 Olympic Games, she won two individual medals; a silver in the 400m Individual Medley, and a bronze in the 200m Backstroke. She has won 14 US National Championship Titles, a World Championship Title, and has nine other international medals spanning the course of her career. In 2016, she was named Captain of the United States Olympic Swim Team.

Elizabeth attended the University of Florida where she won two NCAA titles and 14 SEC titles. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications and was named the 2011 NCAA Division 1 ScholarAthlete All American of the Year and the 2013 SEC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Elizabeth now works as a commentator and media contributor at the Olympic Games and World Championships for NBC. The central messages Elizabeth brings are believing in yourself, working hard, finishing what you started, and having fun. She wants the audience to leave her speeches feeling alive, happy, and inspired.

Joey Rusnak, founder of Lifeguard Authority, poses the question: What defines a hero? Are heroes people that save lives and stop bad things from happening? We recognize military personnel, firefighters, and police officers as heroes, but why not lifeguards and aquatic professionals? Participants will learn to connect themselves with their superhero within. If we can’t see ourselves as heroes how can we ever expect our communities to celebrate our lifeguards as heroes? How we talk, walk and look are all factors that affect our image to ourselves and our communities. Elizabeth Beisel is a three-time Olympic swimmer for the United States. In 2008, she qualified for her first Olympic Games as the youngest competitor of the United States Olympic Team at 15 years old. At the 2012 Olympic Games, she won two individual medals; a silver in the 400m Individual Medley, and a bronze in the 200m Backstroke. She has won 14 US National Championship Titles, a World Championship Title, and has nine other international medals spanning the course of her career. In 2016, she was named Captain of the United States Olympic Swim Team. Elizabeth attended the University of Florida where she won two NCAA titles and 14 SEC titles. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications and was named the 2011 NCAA Division 1 ScholarAthlete All American of the Year and the 2013 SEC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Elizabeth now works as a commentator and media contributor at the Olympic Games and World Championships for NBC. The central messages Elizabeth brings are believing in yourself, working hard, finishing what you started, and having fun. Even though not all public swimming pool codes are created the same, the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) can be used to improve and strengthen rules that are already in place. A pilot program run by the National Association of County and City Health Officials, along with the CDC, allowed the Cuyahoga County Board of Health to review the MAHC and the Ohio pool code to find areas of improvement and in the end strengthen what is in place in Ohio.

Chlorine is used to reduce the risk of infection in swimming pools. The presence of cyanuric acid, either from use of stabilized chlorine products or when added separately, significantly lowers the active chlorine (hypochlorous acid) responsible for disinfection. How can one manage an acceptable level of risk for pathogens including E. coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, SARS-CoV-2?

This session will review American Red Cross Aquatic Examiner Service visits and Loss Control Visits conducted by Counsilman-Hunsaker over the 2021 season and the top 10 areas operators miss in American Red Cross AES and Loss Control visits.

OUTBREAKS ASSOCIATED WITH TREATED RECREATIONAL WATER - UNITED STATES, 2015–2019  Michele Hlavsa, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Joseph Laco, CDC - NCEH Room: Banyon/Citrus/Glades

For 2015–2019, U.S. public health officials reported 208 outbreaks associated with pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds. These outbreaks resulted in 3,646 cases, 286 hospitalizations, and 13 deaths. Among the outbreaks, 76 were caused by Cryptosporidium and 65 by Legionella.

Outbreak investigations underscore need for health inspectors to prevent illness and injury at public aquatic facilities through education and code enforcement.

One recommendation was that each country develops an action plan. This active hands-on water session focuses on developing small groups in scanning and zone coverage during an active water scenario.
