CHRISTOPHER DRUMMOND StarGuardELITE | VA With over ten years in aquatics and recreation management, I am passionate about water safety, risk management, safety training, and organizational development. In my current role at StarGuard ELITE, I help our clients understand and follow industry best practices to help mitigate aquatic incidents. Additionally, I work closely with our client base by facilitating Instructor Development Courses and conducting operational audits. This includes providing guidance on staff development, tailoring support to their unique needs, and collaborating with our team to deliver the most up-to-date information and guidance. Previously, I worked in aquatic facilities with municipalities, multiple YMCA associations, and the United States Air Force. Through this work, I have led and participated in staff development, developed community-requested programming, assisted with facility and pool maintenance, managed facility and department financials, and led communications with both internal and external stakeholders. I am passionate about continued growth and development for myself and other aquatics professionals. This includes identifying areas for development and programs that may help us all succeed, and encouraging us to elevate our programs and staff teams. Additionally, I serve on the AOAP Conference/Education Committee and the Professional Development Committee.
Why I Want to Be a Board Member As a member of the AOAP Board of Directors, I believe I can make a meaningful difference by ensuring that programming meets the ever-changing needs of our membership. This includes using my previous experiences to help bring an adaptive perspective, strengthening resources, increasing engagement with emerging professionals and newcomers to the industry, and staying up to date with industry trends and changes.

DANIEL PETERS City of Phoenix | AZ Daniel Peters is an aquatic operations professional based in Phoenix, Arizona, with extensive experience in lifeguard management, safety protocol implementation, and staff development. As Aquatic Coordinator for the City of Phoenix, he oversees daily pool operations, manages seasonal lifeguard teams, and ensures compliance with industry-leading safety standards. His responsibilities include designing and delivering in-service training, conducting facility safety audits, and leading emergency response drills to maintain the highest levels of risk management and patron safety. Daniel’s expertise spans recruitment and onboarding of aquatic staff, curriculum development for certification programs, and real-time decision-making during high-volume operations. He is known for fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and clear communication among team members—critical factors in maintaining safe, efficient aquatic environments. Why I Want to Be a Board Member I’m seeking a seat on the AOAP Board of Directors to grow as a leader while helping build a stronger, more connected aquatic community. Serving on the Board would give me the opportunity to deepen my understanding of industry-wide challenges and bring valuable insights back to my team in Phoenix. More importantly, I want to use that knowledge to connect resources, share best practices, and support aquatic professionals at every level. I believe culture is the foundation of any successful operation. As someone who prioritizes team cohesion, open communication, and continuous improvement, I want to bring that same energy to the Board. I’m eager to work alongside like-minded individuals who are committed to streamlining the future of the aquatic industry—whether through better training pathways, clearer certification standards, or more accessible professional development opportunities. My goal is to help AOAP become a central hub where coordinators, instructors, and lifeguards can easily access tools, mentorship, and peer support. I want to foster collaboration across regions so we’re not all reinventing the wheel—instead, we’re learning from each other and moving forward together. This isn’t about personal recognition. It’s about building something lasting. If elected, I’ll bring a culture-first mindset, a commitment to listening, and a focus on practical solutions that make life easier for the people doing the work every day. DUSTIN KEPHART Massanutten Resort | VA I am an aquatics professional with 20 years of experience in aquatic operations, leadership, safety, training, and professional development. He currently serves as Assistant Aquatics Operations Manager at Massanutten Resort in Virginia, where he helps lead approximately 150 team members across six aquatic facilities, including indoor and outdoor waterpark operations. My aquatics career began as a Water Attendant and has progressed through the roles of Lifeguard, Waterpark Supervisor, Recreation Lead Supervisor, Waterpark Aquatics Manager, and Assistant Aquatics Operations Manager. This progression has given him a broad understanding of the aquatics industry from frontline operations through senior leadership. Education and professional development have remained central to my career. I support an American Red Cross training program that certifies more than 250 participants annually and holds the Aquatic Professional (AqP) designation, Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification, Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification, Water Safety Instructor certification, and Instructor Trainer credentials. I currently serve the AOAP as a member of both the Professional Development Committee and Education Committee. I also serve on Massanutten Resort’s Safety Committee and Community Service Committee.
Why I Want to Be a Board Member
I am passionate about developing aquatic professionals, strengthening industry education, promoting safe and effective operations, and helping advance the aquatics profession through collaboration, service, and leadership.
I would like to serve on the Association of Aquatic Professionals Board of Directors because I want to give back to an industry that has shaped my professional career for the past 20 years. I began in aquatics as a Water Attendant and have had the opportunity to grow through multiple roles into my current position as Assistant Aquatics Operations Manager. That journey has given me an appreciation for the people who serve at every level of our profession. Through my involvement with AOAP’s Professional Development and Education Committees, I have seen firsthand the value the Association provides through education, collaboration, networking, and the development of aquatic professionals. I would welcome the opportunity to expand my service and help guide the continued growth of the organization. As a Board member, I would bring the perspective of someone who understands both frontline operations and aquatic leadership. I am passionate about developing the next generation of aquatic professionals, strengthening educational opportunities, promoting safety and operational excellence, and ensuring our industry continues to grow and evolve. Most importantly, I want to listen to and represent AOAP members. KATE DENNIS The University of Tennessee - Chattanooga | TN Kate Dennis serves as the Aquatics and Safety Coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she oversees aquatic programs, staff development, safety practices, and community engagement initiatives. With extensive experience in aquatics and recreation operations, she is committed to creating safe, inclusive, and high-quality experiences for participants of all ages and abilities. Throughout her career, Kate has worked closely with lifeguards, swim instructors, coaches, and community partners to strengthen aquatic programming and promote water safety. Her professional expertise includes program management, staff leadership, risk management, training, and customer service. She is passionate about developing strong teams, improving operational efficiency, and expanding opportunities for aquatic education and recreation. Kate believes effective leadership is rooted in collaboration, accountability, and service. She values building positive relationships with colleagues, members, and campus/community partners, while fostering environments where both staff and participants can succeed. City of Mesa | AZ I am an Aquatics Coordinator with the City of Mesa, Arizona, where I help lead operations and programming across eight year-round aquatic facilities. With more than 10 years of full-time experience in parks, recreation, and aquatics, I oversee learn-to-swim programs, junior lifeguards, competitive aquatics, staff development, special events, and operational initiatives that emphasize safety, innovation, and community engagement. I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Arizona State University and am a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP), Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), StarGuard Elite Level II Instructor, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. I am passionate about advancing the aquatics profession through creative programming, strategic partnerships, and sustainable operations. I currently serve on the Association of Aquatic Professionals (AOAP) Volunteer Board of Directors and have contributed to both the Member Engagement and Fundraising Committees, helping strengthen member involvement and cultivate industry partnerships. Inspired by my first AOAP Conference in 2025, I am committed to supporting professionals at every stage of their careers, particularly those serving smaller communities and emerging as new leaders in the field. Growing up on the Colorado River instilled in me a lifelong appreciation for water safety and recreation, and I remain dedicated to sharing ideas, building connections, and advancing our profession through collaboration and service.
Why I Want to Be a Board Member When I attended my first AOAP Conference in 2025, I quickly realized I had found far more than a professional organization—I had found a community of people who are passionate about making aquatics safer, stronger, and more innovative. Although I grew up around water and have spent more than a decade in parks, recreation, and aquatics, AOAP broadened my perspective, challenged me to think differently, and connected me with professionals whose ideas have directly improved my own programs. Serving on the Board of Directors is an opportunity to give back to the organization that has had such a meaningful impact on my career. I am especially passionate about supporting emerging professionals, small and mid-sized agencies, and those who may not yet realize the value of becoming involved with AOAP. I want every aquatic professional—regardless of the size of their community or budget—to have access to the same resources, mentorship, and network that have inspired me. Through my experience in operations, marketing, fundraising, and program development, I hope to continue helping AOAP grow its membership, strengthen industry partnerships, and expand opportunities for collaboration and professional development. Most importantly, I want to help ensure AOAP remains the organization where aquatic professionals come not only to learn, but also to share ideas, build lasting relationships, and elevate our profession together.

MARI-LYNN LATTA Gordon Jewish Community Center | TN With more than 14 years in aquatics and 7 years experience in aquatics, recreation, and nonprofit leadership. Mari-Lynn is passionate about developing high-quality aquatic programs. Currently serving in executive leadership for the Gordon Jewish Community Center, she provides strategic oversight for multiple departments, including aquatics, summer camp, and community engagement. She has experience and expertise in aquatic site maintenance, leadership development, swim lesson instruction, and risk management. She has also developed successful low-cost/free swimming lesson programming, established community partnerships, and regularly advocates for socio-economic and racial inequities in aquatics access.
Why I Want to Be a Board Member I would be honored to serve on the AOAP Board of Directors because I am deeply committed to advancing and expanding access to safe, high-quality aquatics programming for all communities. Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand the lifechanging impact that aquatics can have from teaching water safety to creating spaces that foster health, community, and confidence. Over the past three years, I have had the privilege of serving on AOAP committees, where I have been able to collaborate with other professionals, contribute to meaningful initiatives, and gained a deep appreciation for the organization's mission. These experiences have strengthened my desire to give back in a greater capacity and help shape the future of our industry.

NAYELI TREJOS American Red Cross | CA Nayeli Trejos has over 20 years of experience in the aquatics industry. She began her career in Southern California working in several aquatic facilities in programming, operations and management. She has a deep passion and interest in expanding access to swimming amongst all populations of all ages particularly in populations at the highest risk of drowning. In her current role she has a broad view of the needs and interests of nearly all types and sizes of aquatic organizations and the communities and constituents that she serves. Her hope, through her candidacy as an AOAP Board Member, is that she can pose questions about furthering the aquatics industry and with her background, diverse perspective, energy, and passion, she can assist the group to further promote this excellent industry brimming with future leaders.
Why I Want to Be a Board Member Those who know me through my 20+ years as an aquatics professional know that I value the continuum of aquatics, through training, curriculum, administration, delivery, and more. Both personally and professionally, I have always had an interest in expanding access to swimming amongst all populations of all ages particularly in populations at the highest risk of drowning. In my current role as Director of Aquatics and Public Safety for the Western U.S. for a large organization, I have a broad view of the needs and interests of nearly all types and sizes of aquatic organizations and the communities and constituents that they serve. In this role, I am fortunate to have access to a large network of aquatic professionals nationwide sharing the same passion and enthusiasm as I do. In my current role, I’ve sought out opportunities to grow personally and professionally, including completing rigorous training to become a national spokesperson where my aquatics background and bilingual skills allow me to advocate for water safety and the aquatics industry, as well as other humanitarian topics. I am also serving as a mentor in a new leadership development program within my organization. These examples of my willingness to go above and beyond show that I would be a valuable addition to the AOAP Board of Directors as well. I'm honored to be considered for candidacy. I feel my aquatics experience, diverse perspective, energy and enthusiasm can promote more harmony between aquatic professionals and our services and our communities.
