When it comes to the weather in the UK, we all know that at best, it can be fairly unpredictable, but the last couple of months have been somewhat of a rollercoaster period. It has resulted in the Met Office announcing provisional figures for September in the UK being the joint warmest on record, sunnier than average but also, wetter than average. And the start of October has been a similar story of extremely mild and even pleasant weather, especially for the time of year. So its been far from all bad news. Even better news was that the last of the hosepipe bans were lifted, plus the unusual periods of decent warm weather helped to make up for a poor start to the season and have even extended it a little. In short, autumn seems to have been delayed, perhaps only by a small amount, but the last couple of months certainly seem to have assisted our industry which has enjoyed a busy period. Energy prices have been falling too, a huge help to our industry, but as with the weather, this too now seems to be an unpredictable factor for both owners and operators. As the weather turns, which it will do sooner rather than later, energy costs and the efficient operation of all wet leisure products become even more crucial. To assist with this change and the need to seek out the best ways to operate efficiently, the cooler months of the year also traditionally herald the start of show season. This normally means new product launches plus the chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed. I suspect this year, new products and the sharing of information on how to run pools, spas and more as efficiently as possible will be the highest priority for many. On the theme of events, inside this latest issue,

When it comes to sectors, we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers design and build flexibility which results in some stunning and durable solutions for both high-end domestic and commercial markets alike. Continuing on the subject of high-end, hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands. We’ve also take a closer look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing costs and minimising the effort involved in outdoor pool ownership. Counter-current systems also makes a return as we take an in-depth look at the latest products which provide pools, particularly those with a smaller footprint, with a powerful option to produce a more complete swimming pool experience. Products that are manufactured in the UK also make a return and in a separate piece, we take a closer look at how Plastica have invested in new machinery and production technology. As if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Adam Clark shares his thoughts on the threat that is facing public swimming pools across the country. We’ve two other pieces that tie into this subject – one is from the STA and looks at optimising pool water filtration for improved energy efficiency, and the other looks at how to how to harness technology to keep our public pool spaces afloat. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with everything covered, hopefully we’ve provided a little bit of something for everyone in this latest issue, and as always, I hope you enjoy reading it.

Schlüter-Systems Adds Warmth At New Somerset Spa Tile and stone experts, Schlüter-Systems, were involved recently in the renovation and restoration of The Newt Hotel & Spa – a stunning country estate surrounded by beautiful gardens, nestled within the heart of Somerset. The project consisted of three different areas: Hadspen House, The Farmyard and Barton Spa. The spa was designed from scratch to serve as an enticing draw for guests to relax, whilst the other locations were renovated, giving the estate a new lease of life. Schlüter took on the most significant role for the creation of certain elements of the newly built spa facilities which adjoined Hadspen House. Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD, a tile backerboard, helped construct multiple focal points within the spa area, including the vanity units in the male and female changing rooms. The portico around one of the doors in the main spa was a particularly eye-catching element which added character to the space. The durability of the tile backerboard allowed for 20mm Carrara Marble to be easily fixed over for a beautiful and luxurious finish. Heating elements were also provided with the help of Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO, the electric undertile heating system. Featuring a studded uncoupling membrane into which heating cables are clipped and securely held in place, it guarantees an even and consistent heating experience which is imperative for a commercial area such as this one. The system was used on benches and seats which were then clad with Carrara Marble, meaning that there was a uniform look with the desired comfort element provided alongside it – resulting in the

perfect spa experience for guests to enjoy. The DUO variant of DITRAHEAT has the added functionality of impact-sound reduction and enabling faster heating of floor and wall coverings due to the special thermal barrier fleece laminated on the underside. Certikin Announces Major Sponsorship Deal With New Charity Partner – Level Water Certikin has teamed up with Level Water (www. levelwater.org), a swimming charity which supports young people with disabilities to access one to one swimming opportunities and start their Learn 2 Swim journey. Level Water’s mission is to secure time and training in a leisure centre/pool coupled with the provision of Level 2 swimming teachers for 1:1 lessons for children with disabilities. Once the facility is on-board, they use their database and Level Water’s contacts within the local community to make them aware these specialised lessons are now available. The time in the water is given free of charge and the cost of the lesson is split between the parents and Level Water,

depending on individual circumstances. Fundraising is used to support the cost of these lessons. Certikin Marketing Manager, Chris Green, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Level Water to help change the lives of young people who typically wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience the huge health and safety benefit, not to mention the joy of learning to swim.” Certikin has already kick started its fundraising campaign via in-house staff activities. Its initial target is to raise £3,750

which will enable Level Water to provide 250 lessons. Certikin have also agreed to match the money raised, thus doubling the number of lessons to 500. “There is a natural synergy between Certikin, our customers and Level Water,” added Chris. “If you own, or operate, a wet leisure facility (large or small) please consider timetabling some free time in the pool for a disabled child to receive a lesson. If you’re a pool dealer, we urge you to join us in fundraising and supporting this worthy charity. Please do contact me, or the charity, if you require any further information.” Certikin 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

IN BRIEF FUTURE OF WARWICKSHIRE POOL PROJECT NOW IN DOUBT The discovery of medieval remains on a construction site has generated a significant increase in the predicted cost and duration for a swimming pool project in Warwickshire. The discovery at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth means that local officials will be presented with a report in November that will ask them to decide whether to proceed with the project or not. If the decision is taken not to proceed then Warwick District Council will have to consider the matter further in subsequent meetings. However, as per the Council’s latest public update, it is considered that any other site would cost even more than the Abbey Fields proposals at the higher current estimate and would take almost one and a half years longer to open to the public. As well as additional cost and time, the proposal to consider an alternative site would carry a higher risk in a number of factors than continuing at Abbey Fields.

POOL WHICH CLOSED DUE TO ENERGY HIGH COSTS TO REOPEN A public swimming pool which was forced to close almost a year ago due to rising energy costs is set to reopen this month. Rye Sports Centre in East Sussex shut its 25m pool in November 2022 but staff kept the pool maintained during the closure. Freedom Leisure, which runs the centre on behalf of Rother District Council, previously advised its annual energy bill had increased from £8m to £20m nationwide, leading to the closure of the facility. Freedom Leisure CEO Ivan Horsfall-Turner said energy prices remain high, however, they were “not as high as they were last winter”.

Project To Reintroduce Swim Facilities In Merthyr Tydfil Nears Completion Thanks to a £6m investment secured by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, works are underway to reintroduce swimming facilities in the Welsh town this autumn after structural damage closed the pool in 2019. Works are being carried out by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, alongside modular pool provider Myrtha Pools. Once complete, the re-commissioned facilities will provide residents with a 25m, six-lane main pool, a dedicated teaching pool plus a new splash pool designed to inspire water confidence for toddlers. The changing facilities will also be updated. Jane Sellwood, CEO of Wellbeing Merthyr which manages the centre said: “Commissioning and conducting works through Alliance Leisure and the UK Leisure Framework has been a good decision. Using the UK Leisure Framework ensures we have access to the best expertise and price at all levels of the supply chain and having Alliance leisure act as a single point of contact has made communications and delivery super simple. So far, all works are on time and on budget.” In addition to re-commissioning the pools, the council is investing in decarbonisation measures which include replacing gas fuelled boilers with more efficient air source heat pumps. This is predicted to cut carbon emissions by 61%. Gillian Dunster, Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, said: “These works will not only give the people of Merthyr Tydfil access to a

local pool for the first time in four years, but will also help the council to meet its carbon reduction ambitions to benefit the community both now and in the future.” Kevin Burns, UK Business Development Manager at Myrtha Pools said: “Our stainless steel solutions are uniquely designed to meet modern carbon objectives, with all of our pools adhering to BREEAM, LEED and Green Star standards. We’re delighted to have partnered with Alliance Leisure, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Wellbeing Merthyr on this venture, which will deliver modern, sustainable swimming facilities for the local community.” Myrtha Pools UK 07860 852339 www.myrthapools.com

NIVEKO – An Original And Environmentally Friendly Approach Since 1991 Technological innovation combined with precision, detailed craftsmanship and an environmental approach to production – these are the pillars on which the NIVEKO company philosophy has been based since 1991, when the company was established. With their pools available through HTP Group in the UK, NIVEKO’s products are custom-made in three halls, with a total manufacturing capacity of 1,200 pools a year. The factories are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, maximising the use of materials, streamlining employees’ work and optimising the entire process to enable the shortest possible delivery deadlines. NIVEKO pools themselves have a minimal impact on the environment. Through a combination of state-of-the-art production equipment and a production plan that is perfectly detailed, the company’s production processes are set up to guarantee maximum material utilisation. All surplus material is collected and subsequently recycled by a specialist company and thanks to the high quality of the high-tech polymer

used to manufacture the brand’s pools, recycling is easy and energy efficient. An indisputable advantage of NIVEKO pools is the possibility of passive winterising, which means that the water can be left in the pool even during the winter. It does not need to be drained, so there is no waste of water – the owner saves money and helps protect the environment. This eco-friendly solution is a great example of how clever ideas can reduce the impact that normal pool use has on nature. The maintenance of the pool itself is key to its long-term sustainability. Regular cleaning of the filters and monitoring of the water chemistry helps to reduce pollution while increasing the efficiency of the system. The emission-free filtration technology system, along with the use of solar energy to heat the pool water, ensures the eco-friendly operation of the pools by not only reducing energy costs but also minimising the carbon footprint. IN BRIEF OLYMPIAN OFFICIALLY OPENS RAINHAM LEISURE CENTRE Becky Adlington OBE cut the ribbon to declare the brandnew Rainham Leisure Centre in Essex officially open at a special ceremony recently. Managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Havering Council, the centre celebrated completion of the centre and the opening of its ‘wet side facilities’ – which include an impressive 25m, six-lane swimming pool – by hosting a second family fun weekend, offering free swimming for everyone. ReCreation, founded and owned by Olympians Becky Adlington OBE and Steve Parry MBE, developed the new leisure centre on behalf of Havering Council and Everyone Active. Local school, Rainham Village Primary School, were the first to experience the new swimming pool, as its students enjoyed the first swim. The winner of a creative mural competition with the school was also announced, with one lucky student unveiling their winning mural on the poolside wall, alongside Becky Adlington.

PLANS DROPPED FOR SOMERSET POOL A feasibility study has revealed that plans for a new swimming pool in Minehead appear to be dead in the water after it showed the project was unlikely to be commercially viable. The Somerset town has been without a publicly-operated swimming pool since the local council approved the closure of its Aquasplash facility in 2008. Somerset West and Taunton Council set aside land at the beginning of last year for a potential new pool, and a feasibility study was commissioned. However newly formed authority Somerset Council has confirmed that the pool project is “not being pursued” since the study, undertaken by Glastonburybased APS Pool Contracting Ltd, did not conclude that it would definitely be able to pay for itself.

Certikin Puts The Palace Into Buckingham – With Coverstar As The Main Attraction! Buckingham Pools is no stranger to dealing with high-end water leisure projects and the company were involved from concept to completion with this beautiful domestic swimming pool at a country house in the heart of Warwickshire. The residential 10m x 5.5m, 1.30m deep outdoor pool resides in an expansive verdant landscape, creating an elegant statement. Adorning the pool is a Certikin-supplied Coverstar safety cover – a seamlessly integrated cover system, which is super-easy to operate and provides maximum safety without compromising the pool’s appearance. The multi-use built-in bench area incorporating non-slip entry steps makes for a well-equipped pool for serious swimming and entertainment. The Coverstar system is truly one of the best a pool can get! Based on the strength and supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults, it uses the top quality Ultra Guard III vinyl composite, rather than the industry-standard vinyl, popular with other manufacturers. The high level of UV resistance offered by Ultra Guard III considerably reduces the level of colour fading compared to standard vinyl, plus it has high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, instead of using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar uses an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the cover’s life and improving the overall quality operation. Independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors’ webbing sewn to the cover. The heat-sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric

to create a beautiful finish – an important feature given Buckingham Pools’ attention to detail. Buckingham Pools 01926 852351 www.buckinghampools.com Certikin 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

BAYROL Realigns Its Distribution In The UK Lighthouse has been appointed as a new distributor for the BAYROL product range in the UK, working alongside existing distribution partner Golden Coast to facilitate a smooth transitional period. A New Project Collaboration For Devin At Scottish Leisure Facility

Iconic Stonehaven Lido Gets Mapei Waterproofing Treatment A Mapei Polyurea waterproofing system has been used to restore the historic Stonehaven Open Air Pool in Aberdeenshire. Applied by Anderson Specialist Contracting, the project forms part of renovation works carried out by Aberdeenshire Council. A polyurea waterproofing membrane with excellent chemical resistance, exceptional flexibility and tear strength, Mapei Purtop 1000 N is designed to waterproof structures above and below ground, including roofs, podiums, pools and storage tanks. Mapei was pleased to support Fairhurst Engineers as they explored specification options to establish the right product fit for such a prestigious project. Opened in 1934, Stonehaven Open Air Pool is the UK’s only art deco Olympic-sized heated sea water lido. Threat of closure in the 1990s prompted the founding of a community group – The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool – that works in close partnership with Aberdeenshire Council. Although regularly maintained and repaired, the lido’s multi-layered concrete and paint surface was in

need of renovation. With its extensive expertise in pool waterproofing, Mapei was first approached in 2015 and recommended its Mapelastic Smart system overlaid with a finish. Last summer, Mapei was asked for further advice, as the client was now seeking a seamless solution. With an in depth understanding of previous works carried out – and after discussions with the engineers, and careful consideration of the pool’s age, exposed location and position – Mapei recommended specification of Purtop 1000 N – a two-component pure polyurea membrane which forms a completely waterproof coating, with high chemical resistance, exceptional flexibility and tear strength. Mapei’s proposal covered all aspects of the pool refurbishment, from repairs of the defective concrete using products from the Mapei concrete repair range, through to the Purtop 1000 N system build-up required for the lido.

PEOPLE NEWS David Hayles

Joe Venables

Two New Directors For Heatstar Heatstar are delighted to announce the appointment of two new directors to its subsidiary company HS Europe Ltd. Those in the industry will recognise the two new appointments as well-known and long-standing Heatstar employees David Hayles and Joe Venables, who have both been promoted to the board. Each have held senior management roles within the company before their move to the board and bring an impressive wealth of knowledge and experience to their new positions having worked for Heatstar for a combined total of 49 years. The move will see David step up to Operations Director whilst continuing to drive and manage all aspects of the business’ aftersales activities – whether it be offering advice, expertise and technical support to the company’s loyal customers or to the management of Heatstar’s aftersales department including their own team of dedicated engineers. Commenting on his new role, David said: “I am looking forward to this new step in my journey with Heatstar, I feel very humbled but equally excited to see where this new role will take me.” Joe’s new role as Commercial Director will see him continue to lead Heatstar’s sales and specification team but with a long-term plan of taking a step back from the day-to-day management of the sales

office and taking a more hands on approach with Heatstar’s key customer base. Joe said: “I am excited in what the change of our roles represents for our staff, this move creates positions at the senior level of the business for our staff to develop and grow in to. The success of the business is not down to a few individuals but the whole team at Heatstar and we are fortunate to work with a great team of staff. The confidence and assurance I have in the competent team I work with will allow me to focus on the broader commercial interests of the business both direct and indirect to continue and progress the success of the business in a sustainable way.” Since the company’s launch in 1980, Heatstar has been at the forefront of the swimming pool industry through its design and manufacture of innovative environmental control solutions. Despite changes in regulations over the years, the company’s commitment to innovation and growth has remained consistent, and now it is taking steps to place more emphasis on investing in the people who continue to drive it forward towards a bright future, to match an already glittering past. Swapping One Golden Coast For Another A key member of the Golden Coast sales team is bidding farewell to Barnstaple for new adventures in Australia. In doing so Chantelle Hampstead leaves a successful career as South West Territory Manager for one of the UK’s leading suppliers of wet leisure products, safe in the knowledge that a welcome awaits should she decide to return. “The last two years at Golden Coast have been amazing,” said Chantelle. “I’ve absolutely loved it here, and who knows, I may even be back one day, but right now I’m seizing an opportunity to travel to Australia, and I’m excited about this next chapter. “The job has evolved during my time here. I began working with tubhub and then pool covers, then, as operations changed, I was assigned to South West Territory Sales. That’s been a career highlight for me. It meant me supporting a load more customers and being fully informed about the entire product catalogue. Working closely with our on-the-road sales rep Debbie, we forged a great team that meant we could be really proactive and build strong relationships with our customers. “Having shadowed me for a period, my colleague Ellie Gill will take over once I’ve gone. I know she’s ready and will hit the ground running.” Commenting on Chantelle’s departure, Golden Coast Sales Manager Luke Honnoraty said: “Recent years have been extremely busy at Golden Coast following our merger with PPG and high demand for our products. Chantelle has played an important role in supporting the team throughout. She has been a fantastic asset to this organisation and we’ll definitely miss her.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

254 PLATINUM™ Plus – The Ultimate Lightweight ThinSet Adhesive Mortar

NSF 50 Cryptosporidium Certification For BIO-UV’s triogen® UV CF Range BIO-UV Group and its Scottish subsidiary triogen® – experts in UV, Ozone, and AOP water treatment for over 35 years – have just obtained NSF 50 Cryptosporidium certification for its triogen® UV CF range. NSF is recognised as the leading testing and certification organisation in the recreational water sector and can guarantee that a product complies with regulatory requirements in North America. NSF/ ANSI 50 certification applies to swimming pool equipment, spas and other recreational water installations (such as pools on cruise ships) to ensure compliance with standards set by public health authorities. The additional NSF 50 Cryptosporidium certification guarantees water disinfection and Cryptosporidium inactivation by ultraviolet treatment for pool water where chlorine is not effective. Unlike other bathing water pathogens, Cryptosporidium is highly resistant to chlorine disinfection. The use of UV technology in triogen® CF units not only disinfects the water to inactivate the Cryptosporidium parasite and harmful pathogens but also dechlorinates the water by reducing the combined chlorine content, thanks to its medium-pressure lamps. With this new NSF 50 Cryptosporidium certification, BIO-UV Group is now able to address the North American commercial pool market with its triogen® UV CF ranges, whose sales rose by a strong 27% in the first half of 2023 (compared with the first half of 2022). In addition to the US market, BIO-UV Group also intends to strengthen its position in the pool water treatment segment the Middle East, Asia, plus the UK where its products are available through AstralPool UK. LATICRETE, a leading manufacturer of globally proven construction solutions for the building industry, has introduced 254 PLATINUM™ Plus, a high-performance, lightweight thin-set adhesive mortar that builds on the strengths of the original 254 PLATINUM. This new formula features a lighter, creamier consistency for greater workability and an impressive 60 minute open time to allow greater flexibility for installers on the job site. Additionally, a 25lb (11.3kg) bag of 254 PLATINUM™ Plus offers the same coverage as a standard 50lb (22.6kg) bag of adhesive mortar. “We understand that whether you’re a professional contractor, architect or a DIY enthusiast, productivity and performance are paramount. 254 PLATINUM™ Plus not only delivers on both fronts, but its smooth, creamy consistency and lightweight formula ensures it’s easy to work with,” said Jonathan Scott, LATICRETE Senior Product Manager. The new formula exceeds ANSI A118.15 requirements, the industry’s highest performance standard for cement-based adhesive mortars, making it ideal for any interior, exterior or submerged installations in commercial and residential projects. 254 PLATINUM Plus is UL Greenguard-certified for low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formulated without silica sand to ensure safer and healthier environments for contractors and end-users. Get The Pool Party Started With Lighthouse’s New ‘Wave’ Cover System! New to the market and available exclusively from Lighthouse, the HeatForm ‘Wave’ pool cover ranges which feature slats from Hydrodeck have been designed by the technical team at Lighthouse to be as playful as they are good looking, and robust as they are reliable. The in-ground system is available in four installation configurations including a shallow water beach entry system with steps – unique to HeatForm and which is Lighthouse’s most popular model – enables somewhere to sit and allows pool users to dangle their feet on hot summer days whilst keeping the cover safely tucked away. Other options include the deep water bench, a simple submerged roller option and the

discreet letterbox pit system hidden behind the pool walls. The latest above-ground ‘Wave’ features integrated music and lighting options which are sure to get any pool party started! There are also four options when it comes to the colours of the end stands – Anthracite, Light Grey, Sand and White, plus a wide range of colours for the slats themselves.

“The Wave was born out of a desire to create a pool cover which was not only robust and reliable but also looked good. We wanted to create something which finished the pool off nicely but didn’t distract from the overall aesthetic. A finishing touch, a final flourish, if you will. The options for integrated lights and music bring an element of playfulness and as with all our HeatForm products, the solar option offers cost savings and energy efficiency,” said Dan Phillips, Managing Director at Lighthouse. Slatted Cover Options Expand With UK Launch Of (Re)Cover For those familiar with the European brands, you may recognise the two Dutch brands who have now officially launched in the UK market with a newly appointed UK sales agent, Victoria PlompenPhilip. (Re)Cover manufactures polycarbonate, solar, anti-algae and PVC slats and supply many pool cover manufacturers around Europe, Australia and Africa. They also supply the pool trade with made to measure slatted covers. Their sole focus is producing pool cover slats and they have targeted the replacement slat sector. (Re)Cover was formed by the former management team of Pool Technics. Blue PPW manufactures roller systems and accessories for automatic pool covers, all with in-roller motors, using their 25 years’ knowledge and experience. Blue took over the technology from Pool Technics whose brand Hydrodeck was distributed in the UK for many years. Both companies have been trading since 2014 and have quickly established themselves as a high quality manufacturer of slatted covers with the business growing year on year in both mainland Europe and

Selling direct to the pool builder network, working with high quality products and short delivery times, competitive pricing and excellent and effective customer service, they have quickly gained a share of the market. These two Dutch companies work in close cooperation and when a client wants a complete automatic pool cover, they box it and ship it as one shipment to save on transport costs with standard order lead-time of just two weeks for delivery on site. The quality of both manufacturers is very high, and they both offer 5-year warranties and many other advantages such as the highest result against hail certification and tri-extrusion which adds an extra layer of UV protection to the slats.

Over the last 12 months, Ocea UK have introduced a range of handpicked premium products for the UK pool market. Selected by industry experts at the Oxfordshirebased company, they form the exciting new Ocea X range. The latest addition to this collection is this compact full-inverter dehumidifier. It brings an unprecedented silent experience due to the full-inverter technology and is ten times quieter than a traditional dehumidifier. With as little noise disturbance as possible, it is the perfect choice for both residential and commercial environments. Ocea UK have backed the product and are confident that it will be a welcome addition to their collection and have given it their ‘Ocea UK Approved’ stamp. Models available will remove from 40 litres/day, all the way up to 80 litres/day so there’s plenty of choice in this competitively priced range. Units will be stocked in the UK ready for despatch and Ocea UK are taking orders now. The medium pressure UV unit guarantees superb quality for a fair price – its features include a 316 stainless steel chamber, a staggering 16,000 hour lamp life and easy bulb replacement system. be controlled and monitored via a ModBus connection. The Compact control panel offers basic safety functionality and a lamp life indicator and gives single LED life information and lamp hot-start protection. Each unit is equipped with transparent parts to monitor the UV-C lamp. VGE Pro units can be equipped with a UV-C sensor and/or water temperature sensors too. The unique Smart Pin Technology (SPT) is a reliable way to integrate the UV-C lamp(s) in a safe,

efficient and smart way in a reactor. The SPT makes it possible to replace the lamp safely, although the system remains filled with water. If the lamp is mistakenly not turned off during the replacement, it will switch off automatically as soon as it is removed from the socket. Due to the seal between the lamp socket and lamp, the system can be used in situations where IPx4 is required. The high-quality ceramic is an excellent electrical insulator and is resistant to corrosion. Certikin 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

AstralPool UK offer a number of automatic pool cover choices, with both slatted and fabric options available. The company is continually incorporating the latest innovations to its products in matters of safety. As such their slatted automatic pool covers have been developed to meet the demands of the French standard NF P90 308, which guarantees maximum user safety. These options cover the whole pool and are easily rolled up or spread thanks to their built-in motorised roller. The turning of a key is all that is needed to get it working. Manufactured with rigid slats which are available in various colours, the design and composition produce a floating cover that fits over the entire pool and makes for very effective heat insulation. AstralPool have seven models to cover the equipment needs of new and existing pools, with submerged, above-ground and above-ground with a bench all available. The roller mechanism is located in a separate sunken compartment sectioned off from the pool by a brick or PVC panel. The above-ground models such as Carlit, Octea, Sveltea and Bellasun are ideal for existing pools as the winding shaft is fastened in place to the pool decking. Also suitable for above-ground on existing pools, Narbonne and Zenit both provide a bench that covers the mechanical installation, giving it a high-quality finish. If a material cover is required, Cover-Pools’ multitasking option will act as a safety cover, solar cover and winter cover whilst saving operating costs for its owners. Strong and with a smaller footprint, the Cover-Pools T4 system is the only automatic pool cover system designed for stainless steel cable which doesn’t stretch like traditional rope. Coast Spas Partners With Catalina Spas In The UK Scandinavian Architect’s Luxury Sauna Sweeps Across Europe With the sauna trend spreading widely across the globe, a Dano-Swedish couple saw the opportunity for a completely new market: custom mobile saunas. From the outset, they experienced soaring demand, and over the past three years, the couple’s Denmark-based venture – Scandinavian Sauna – has successfully entered the Nordic markets and Japan. Now the architect-designed mobile saunas are looking to extend their presence to the UK and beyond. “In most countries, you need a building permit to build a sauna, which makes the process too difficult for a lot of people. That’s why we’re firmly committed to the potential that there’s an untapped market for mobile saunas. And we’re taking that potential seriously from a design standpoint. As an architect, it’s in my power to design saunas that not only fulfil the technical requirements, such as heat distribution and multilevel seating, but also deliver comfort and a design imbued with materials and aesthetics that honour nature and our Scandinavian design heritage,”

said Jakob Gate, architect and founder of Scandinavian Sauna. He added: “We feel that the United Kingdom is the perfect place to match with customers who can appreciate the immense amount of hard work that goes into designing and developing our product. The UK represents functionality, meticulousness and top-notch quality, which goes hand-inhand with our aspirations for our design and product.” After many years working as architects and project managers with prominent firms in London’s commercial design industry, Jakob Gate and Cecilie Wang felt something new needed to happen. Following a two-year stint in the Philippines, where they worked for charities and designed and built educational centres for children, they returned to the chill of Scandinavia. Sauna visits healed their yearning for a return to the heat, and drawing on their expertise from their architect firm, Scandinavian Sauna was born. system. Alongside its three seats, the Pershore offers two full size adult loungers allowing users to lay back and fully enjoy the hot tub experience. Whilst it is the smaller model within the Collection, the Pershore will comfortably accommodate five people, making it ideal for a smaller family or a couple who want to enjoy time together or with friends. Lastly, the Warwick is the largest hot tub in the range, and with seating for seven adults alongside the built-in audio system, it is the one for those that like to entertain friends and family. Featuring 58 jets alongside three pumps, the Warwick really is a powerhouse of a hot tub. Certikin 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

Wine And Water Combine At Portugal Hotel Pool Ezarri’s swimming pool tiles are the link between water and wine in this luxury hotel in Porto. Inspired by the culture of wine and vineyards, The Lodge Hotel is distinguished by the exclusive design by the renowned Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva and by the architecture firm ARQ2525 Arquitectos. Nini Andrade was able to connect the soul of the Douro Valley organically in successive scenic environments, awakening the senses in an aura of timelessness. The Lodge manages to uniquely honour the rich cultural heritage of the Douro region. The Lodge Hotel is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, the heart of Porto’s wine-growing region, an area dotted with vineyards and wineries offering guided tours and tastings. It is also known for sandy beaches such as Praia da Madalena and the picturesque Cais de Gaia area on the river, featuring outdoor cafés and sweeping views of the Douro. The Lodge Hotel opted for mosaic tiles to create a magnificent outdoor swimming pool with a simply breathtaking view of the Puente Dom Luis I Bridge and the Sierra del Pilar. The hotel’s exquisitely decorated outdoor pool area exudes a contemporary urban atmosphere, where food and drinks are also available. The terrace rooms offer direct access to the shared swimming pool, offering comfort and convenience. For this pool, Ezarri used the Custom Printed Mosaic to decorate the interior with a large grape and Sagittarius from the Space Collection – a

glass mosaic pool tile with a soft satiny sheen, particularly suitable for swimming pools, interiors, spas, saunas and wellness areas. The result radiates energy with its beautiful intensely blue tones. Ezarri Mosaico +34 943 164 140 www.ezarri.com

Allforpools Becomes Part Of Pollet Pool Group Pollet Pool Group (PPG) recently announced the purchase of Belgian swimming pool specialist Allforpools – an established player in the market as a distributor of swimming pool equipment and an automated cover manufacturer. PPG today consists of nine European distribution companies and two manufacturers. In Belgium, PPG is mainly active in Flanders and thanks to the acquisition of Allforpools, PPG are able to reinforce its ‘Supporting Pool Builders’ philosophy in the south of the country. The dynamic team at Allforpools is the perfect addition for PPG in the Belgian market. The company has the typical family character that suits PPG and is very well anchored in the local Walloon market and the Allforpools name will be retained. As a group, PPG believe in strong local identities and continue what the Allforpools team has worked hard for in recent years. In Belgium, there will therefore be two PPG companies that focus 100% on the professional pool builder: PPG Belgium in Flanders and Allforpools in Wallonia. PPG are convinced that this combination will make them an even better partner for every Belgian pool builder.

Mathieu Deleval, Managing Director of Allforpools said: “The acquisition is also a logical next step for Allforpools. Being part of Pollet Pool Group gives our customers access to a larger product range, we can set up synergies with our colleagues in Flanders and we both strengthen our service for the swimming pool builder. Moreover, like many of our customers, we share the strong DNA of a family business. We also firmly believe with AFP in the credo of PPG: ‘Supporting Pool Builders’. As part of Pollet Pool Group, we will from now on focus completely and exclusively on the B2B market.” PPG Belgium +32 5678 2057 www.polletpoolgroup.com

NIVEKO Pool Provides Perfect Design Synergy At Elegant Danish Home A truly modern look, clean lines, a distinctive architectural design and a NIVEKO custommade pool have created a unique combination at this stunning Danish home. The wide range of pool configuration options on offer from NIVEKO enables owners to make the most of any comprehensive house design, and the project for the Grenaae family is proof of this. The modern residence was designed with attention to the finest detail. With a sophisticated combination of materials, shapes and colours, this is an elegant house that offers a practical and comfortable place for family life. Choosing a NIVEKO pool for this project really was a win – NIVEKO’s corporate philosophy is primarily about the individualism of each customer and adapting the product precisely to suit what they have in mind. The choice of the Skimmer Invisible is absolutely ideal in this case, owing to the combination of style and everyday utility it offers. The unique design of the skimmer holes in the wall itself is both practical and visually appealing – there is no frame to disrupt the clean lines of the pool. What’s more, the wellchosen white of the pool nicely complements the colour scheme of the house, which ranges from white through to dark brown. The pool is installed on a gentle slope that connects to a terrace around the house. This makes it an organic part of the project. The couple are very happy with the dimensions they chose (8.4 x 3.6 x 1.5m), as well as

with the classic staircase running along the entire width of the pool. The Grenaaes originally chose the pool primarily with their children and friends in mind, but with the entire project having perfectly lived up to their expectations, they have ended up using it themselves whenever they can! New Designs Unveiled For Therme Canada Ontario Place

Therme Canada has released its newly evolved design for the West Island of Ontario Place, which delivers its year-round familyfriendly destination attraction alongside four more acres of public parkland. It comes at the same time as Therme Manchester in the UK has received planning approval for its new designs. Both updates followed consultations with the public in Toronto and Manchester. The Therme Canada Ontario Place update features new areas designed with input from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and also incorporating feedback from public meetings, community engagement and City of Toronto planning staff. When complete, the Ontario Place public parkland will become the largest public gathering space on Toronto’s western waterfront. Changes include: • New campus-style layout of the West Island with four more acres of public space, including parks, rooftop trails and gardens, bringing the total to nearly 16 acres – more than currently exists on the West Island. • New public gathering spaces designed in

partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. • New design features that celebrate the history and heritage design of the original Ontario Place with enhanced views of the Pods, Cinesphere, downtown skyline and Lake Ontario. “The design that we revealed today delivers the same great waterpark and wellbeing attractions, but thanks to feedback, it has even more open parkland, more natural spaces, more public trails, and more places for people to gather,” said Dr Robert Hanea, CEO and Chairman of Therme Group. “After this revitalisation, there will be more public space than currently exists on the West Island, and we are proud to advance a project that responds so meaningfully to the feedback we have heard so far.”

Waterco Completes Acquisition Of Davey Water Products After announcing in August the purchase of Davey Water Products Pty Ltd, global water treatment and pool equipment manufacturer Waterco Limited has cemented its position as the largest Australian-owned and operated entity in the water industry by completing the acquisition as planned on 1 September. With a combined 131-year history in the multi-billion dollar global water industry – one of the most critical sectors in the world – the acquisition enables Waterco to expand its reach while providing increased market presence and growth opportunities for shareholders. “We are excited about the potential synergies between Waterco and Davey,” said Soon Sinn Goh, CEO of Waterco. “By working together, we believe we can create a stronger and more competitive water treatment and pool equipment business.” The company will focus on three key areas: • Increased market share – Waterco and Davey are both leading players in pumps, water treatment and the pool equipment market. By working together, these two businesses reach a larger customer base and open up new markets with their combined product portfolio • Enhanced product offerings – Waterco and Davey have complementary product portfolios. The combined expertise of both companies in research and development will accelerate innovation and foster the development of premium differentiated products • Improved operational efficiency – Waterco and Davey should improve their operational efficiency by sharing resources and best practices. This will lead to lower costs and better customer service. Waterco is taking a long-term view of its investment in acquiring Davey. The company is committed to sustainable growth and believes that this acquisition will help it achieve its goals of becoming a global leader in the water technology industry. “By adopting a long-range outlook, Waterco is positioning itself for success in the years to come,” said Goh. “Davey is an iconic Australian brand; we are respectful of its long heritage and understand the need for careful planning and execution in order to minimise disruption to the company’s operations and reputation.” Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

Providing Benefits For Members And The Wider Industry In what has been a hard to predict year for the industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reveals some of the essential work being undertaken behind the scenes by the industry’s associations and highlights courses, awards and more in the months ahead

I

n the last issue of SPN, I mentioned that there were two water companies with hosepipe bans. I am delighted to say that all of the bans have now been lifted, and the recent bouts of rain are helping to replenish some key reservoirs. We continue dialogue with the water companies in relation to Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) about their interpretation of some critical issues related to the sale of hot tubs and their first fill with water, clarifying if maintenance contracts permit the use of water to top up hot tubs and the threshold needed for medical exemptions for using hot tubs (and pools) for therapeutic use. News is awaited about the updated Water Industry Code of Practice for managing water during times of drought. SPATA and BISHTA have represented the pool and hot tub industry, discussing areas of concern with Water UK, UKWIR and the water companies to try and ensure businesses are not unduly impacted. Moving on to the subject of personnel, following the recent adoption of the Equity (or Equality), Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy by the BSPF, there are plans for this policy to be discussed and adopted by BISHTA, SPATA, PIP and SPATEX over the coming months. Following an initial meeting, a Task Group was formed to raise EDI awareness. If this subject interests you, please see the following page in this issue for more information, or contact the team in the Andover office on 01264 356210 (or 211). SPATA hopes to organise a fast-track Pool

Plant Operations (PPO) course with the STA for experienced staff in the pool industry on Tuesday 7 November, subject to demand. BISHTA is arranging an Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs qualification (with NICEIC) from the 22 to 24 November. The annual Information and Networking Days (and AGMs) for BISHTA and SPATA were held on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September, respectively. Following these annual events, all of the presentations and recordings are made available to SPATA and BISHTA members in the online Members’ Hubs. The BSPF AGM is scheduled for Thursday, 19 October. This issue also provides the chance to send a final reminder that the BISHTA and SPATA entries must be submitted to the respective office by Friday 27 October, so please contact the office with any updates. It is not too late to sponsor the awards, so if you are interested, please get in touch with Jan Hardy. The winners will be announced at the BSPF - Industry Gala Evening at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry during SPATEX on Tuesday, 6 February 2024. Tickets cost £76.95pp (+VAT), which includes a pre-dinner drinks reception, a three-course meal, and an evening of celebration and live entertainment. Booking is now open (full table are bookings available), so please visit the SPATA and BISHTA websites for more information. Please remember that attendance at the event is open to the whole industry! Still on the subject of awards, Cologne will be the venue for hosting the 11th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards at aquanale on

Tuesday 24 October. Good luck to all of the UK shortlisted entries, and details of the winners will be shared in the December issue of SPN. Cologne will also be the venue for the 7th WAPSA meeting (it is the second time the city has hosted it, with Lyon twice, Barcelona twice and one online meeting during SPATEX being the others). The WAPSA meeting is a chance to get Association executives together to share data and best practice. Back in the UK and focusing on the benefits to our membership, BISHTA and SPATA are very proud to be a Primary Authority Partner with Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards, and the trade associations are very grateful for the article produced by Philip LeShirley on the subject of ‘vulnerable customers’ on page 34. Last but not least, BISHTA and SPATA are always on the lookout for ways to help members and by partnering with Quest Services, there is now access to a large number of documents covering HR, H&S, legal and financial topics. For more details of what is covered, please see page 33.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Why Have An Equity, Diversity And Inclusion Policy? In this issue, the BSPF shares views on why it has implemented an EDI policy, the numerous benefits of one , and how it will be communicated in the news

T

he BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation) is working with BISHTA, SPATA, PIP and SPATEX to fulfil its role to ‘Promote Pools, Hot Tubs and Allied Wet Leisure’. Through the BSPF (and its members), having a unified voice, where applicable, for the wet leisure industry allows better dialogue with the government and other relevant organisations that impact our industry. It is then possible to ensure an effective communication system is in place to update the industry on upcoming issues. But just as crucially, the BSPF invites communication with its members (listed above), and in the cases of BISHTA and SPATA, also with their members to help to improve and develop the industry through open dialogue with member companies through the work of the committees. One such recent development is the introduction of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policy, a strategic framework for organisations to adopt within their workplace or community to ensure fairness and inclusivity and that it is representative of all individuals regardless of their backgrounds. There are many important reasons for having an EDI policy: • Promoting Fairness And Equality: An EDI policy aims to eliminate discrimination, bias and inequality within an organisation or community. It ensures everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, or other characteristics. • Attracting And Retaining Talent: Organisations prioritising equity, diversity, and inclusion tend to attract a more diverse talent pool. People from various backgrounds are more likely to join and remain with organisations that value their unique perspectives and contributions. • Enhancing Innovation And Creativity: Diverse teams bring a wide range of experiences, viewpoints and problemsolving approaches. This diversity of thought can lead to more innovative and creative solutions, fostering a dynamic and forward-thinking work environment. • Improving Decision-Making: Inclusive environments encourage open dialogue and collaboration, leading to better decisionmaking. When making choices, diverse teams are more likely to consider various perspectives and potential outcomes. • Reflecting The Broader Community: Organisations should mirror the diversity of the communities they serve. An EDI policy

32 October 2023 SPN 32_SPN_October_23_BSPF_EDI.indd 32

helps ensure the organisation’s workforce represents its customer base, creating stronger connections and understanding between the two. • Meeting Legal And Regulatory Requirements: Many jurisdictions have laws and regulations that require organisations to promote equity and prevent discrimination. Having an EDI policy demonstrates a commitment to compliance with these legal requirements. • Enhancing Reputation: Organisations prioritising equity, diversity and inclusion are often viewed more positively by customers, partners, investors and the public. This can lead to improved brand reputation and increased stakeholder trust. • Reducing Conflict And Improving Relationships: An inclusive environment helps reduce conflicts arising from misunderstandings and biases. It fosters respectful relationships among employees and can lead to improved collaboration and teamwork. • Addressing Unconscious Bias: An EDI policy often includes training and awareness programmes that help employees recognise and address their unconscious biases. This promotes a more inclusive and respectful workplace. • Ethical And Moral Imperative: For many organisations, creating an equitable and inclusive environment is not only a business strategy but also an ethical responsibility. Treating all individuals fairly and respectfully is the right thing to do.

In summary, an EDI policy is essential for fostering a positive, inclusive and equitable work environment that benefits individuals, organisations, and society as a whole. It goes beyond legal compliance and reflects a commitment to valuing and respecting all individuals’ diverse experiences and perspectives. The initial development of the BSPF policy has been due to the formation of a new EDI Working Group, with the first meeting taking place (online) on Thursday 29 June 2023. Contributors included Amanda Goddard (AstralPool UK), Arun Sarna (Hot Tub Suppliers), Jon Herbert (Rockingham Pools) and Sallie Leslie-Golding (PIP, BISHTA and SPATA). The meeting was facilitated by Chris Hayes (BSPF – Managing Director). The BSPF is grateful for its staff and member companies’ support and shared views at the first Working Group meeting. The BSPF has now adopted their EDI policy as an organisation with support and feedback from the staff team in Andover: Jan Hardy, Claire Maguire, Jenna Patterson and Debbie Thornton. The policy has been shared with members of BISHTA and SPATA for their own use via the online Members’ Hub, with other related documents to follow as they become available, and to grow the Working Group and plan future meetings to progress with the work on EDI. The policy will also be shared with PIP and SPATEX for their support. Members wishing to receive a copy of the EDI policy can contact the team in Andover; any member with their own EDI policy is encouraged to share it with their respective trade association.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF THIS EDI WORKING GROUP? Please get in touch with the BSPF office to register your interest and confirm any topics you would like to see on the agenda in future discussions – email admin@bspf.org.uk today. BSPF 01264 356210 www.bspf.org.uk

Guidance For Companies On The Fair Treatment Of Vulnerable Customers Most of us have preconceptions of vulnerable consumers being the elderly, or people with disabilities – at higher risk of being misled or ripped off. The actual definition is much broader, so how can businesses in the wet leisure industry support this group? Philip LeShirley from Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards guides us through this challenging subject

W

e all know that old age and ill health can be indicators of vulnerability. If consumers have any additional needs, long-term disability, impairment, illness or age-related conditions, they will be considered vulnerable. Capability is another key indicator – consumers with English as a second language or additional educational needs can also be vulnerable. Not all vulnerabilities are easy to spot though. Bereavement, redundancy, loss of income, divorce or a relationship breakdown can make someone vulnerable, at least for the short term. We call this ‘situational vulnerability’, and the COVID pandemic created many situational vulnerabilities amongst consumers. A lack of support network can also lead to vulnerability. Consumers can also become vulnerable when choosing between complex offers or alternatives or making decisions based on imperfect or unclear information. This market context vulnerability may arise in some of the following situations: • buying a pool/hot tub • assessing how much utility bills will rise when buying a pool or hot tub • calculating maintenance costs of pools/ hot tubs.

WHAT BUSINESSES IN THE WET LEISURE INDUSTRY CAN DO The point of sale is the main risk area for consumers. You should: • Provide information in the most straightforward, most precise possible way. Vulnerability should be considered at all stages of terms and conditions, website and marketing claims development. • Talk to the consumer. Finding the right communication channel for consumers with differing needs is key − consumers with mental health problems may prefer electronic communication, and older consumers may prefer a letter. • Adapt accordingly. It may be apparent that a consumer is blind or does not speak fluent English, so additional support will be required. A consumer may be elderly

34 October 2023 SPN 34_SPN_October_23_BSPF_Trading_Standards.indd 34

and alone – in which case you should offer to involve a family member or friend in pre-sales discussions. You could provide more time for the consumer to cancel a contract (or offer a cancellation period even if not required to). • Implement a vulnerable consumer’s policy. (And train your staff on how to adhere to it.)

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

Q A Q A

Is consumer vulnerability only for customers with credit finance? No – you should be considering consumer vulnerability across everything you do. Can I refuse a sale if I suspect a customer is vulnerable? Yes, but you should be exploring how to provide additional support to enable them to make the right decisions. Remember, vulnerable consumers are just as much in need of your products as others, more so in some cases. Is a customer with a disability automatically a vulnerable customer? No, having a disability does not automatically make you vulnerable. Neither does not having one mean you are not vulnerable. Remember, we can all be vulnerable at different times of our lives. Indeed, a blind consumer is automatically vulnerable as they need more communication support. Vulnerability must always be assessed on an individual basis, though. What happens if an elderly customer wants to purchase a spa, and the family contacts us and demands that we do not sell

Q A

Q

the spa to this customer? The sale should be paused so that a meeting can take place between the business representative, the customer and their family members. The best solution for the customer should be reached. If someone confirms that they have mental health issues and want to purchase a hot tub, what processes do you go through? Don’t forget that your products can benefit consumers with mental health issues (most of us have experienced these at some stage). Speak to the customer, make an assessment, and ask if they want more time or additional support.

A Q A

When talking to consumers, remember: • Do they show signs of vulnerability? • If they do show signs of vulnerability, then steps must be taken to support them, and you should summarise, in plain English, what has been decided or agreed. The support you provide to vulnerable consumers is a bit like the speed you drive past a school in your car. The speed limit may be 30mph, but you can always go even slower to protect children (who are extremely vulnerable). Taking things slowly, with the right precautions in place, should help provide vulnerable consumers with the protections they must be given. To learn more about the subject of consumer vulnerability, please visit www.businesscompanion.info where a useful guide can also be downloaded.

STA POOL PLANT – EFFICIENT FILTRATION

Optimising Pool Water Filtration For Improved Energy Efficiency In this latest issue, Andrew Gaffey, STA Pool Plant Tutor looks at the subject of filtration and how swimming pool operators in mainland Europe are benefitting from more optimised solutions than those often used in the UK

S

and filters have been used in public swimming pools for over 100 years, and the basic principles of this mature technology are well-proven and understood in the water treatment industry. Some voices in the pool industry say that it’s old technology and that there are more modern methods that can be used, but these often come with higher complexity. Every method has some downsides. On the face of it, sand filtration technology would appear to have developed little over this time, perhaps apart from the obvious modern materials used for media and vessel construction. However, if we look at the practices of some of our European neighbours, particularly Germany and Austria, it becomes apparent that the UK market has been trailing behind for some time. For many UK pool operators, gaining a deep understanding of filtration engineering may not be at the top of their priority list. Filter installation or refurbishment work is often won on cost, rather than performance and long-term durability of the system. There are numerous technologies that are being deployed apace to save energy and carbon emissions in swimming pools, yet sand filtration seems to have been largely overlooked; not many energy efficiency auditors are filtration specialists. So, how could those mysterious-looking domes in your plant room hold the key to highly efficient pool water treatment? Over the past 20 years or so a lot of research has been done on sand/media filter performance, particularly since the advent of Cryptosporidium incidents in pools, and this research has informed the pool industry that there is indeed a range of filter design features and optimisations that can be used to make sand media filtration much more effective and efficient than it once was. If pool filters are undersized and running at higher than ideal filtration velocity, the basic

With the correct vessel design and installation techniques, sand filters can be highly efficient, simple to operate and maintain, and last for decades” 38 October 2023 SPN 38_SPN_October_2023_STA.indd 38

efficiency of the filtration system will be quite poor. Higher velocity also means there will be less contact time inside the filter headspace for flocculants to work, which prevents fine particles and colloids (most of the pollution in the pool) from being effectively removed. In turn, this leads to much more chlorine being required to oxidise the remaining pollution and organic substances in the pool, also resulting in higher chloramine and trichloramine levels and a lot more bather irritation. This excessive use of caustic chlorine also impacts pH correction and water balance, requiring more acid/CO2 dosing to keep the pH in the ideal range. With this situation, chemical deliveries will be large and frequent, meaning more unnecessary carbon emissions. The traditional way of alleviating the effects of this problem is either by dumping more pool water and increasing pool hall fresh air changes, or by relying heavily on UV treatment to reduce chloramines (whilst also consuming even more chlorine). Whichever way you want to cut it, this style of water treatment regime is very energy-intensive and wasteful. Prevention would be better than a cure! In German and Austrian public pools, filtration plant installers must use filter vessels that are constructed to comply with the DIN 19605 standard. This standard offers a filter design that is hydraulically efficient, both for filtration and backwashing, and for air-scouring prior to backwashing. The larger space provided in the top of the

filter (freeboard area) allows the correct time and conditions for flocculation to occur, permits fast backwashing speeds, and helps keep the filter bed level. The connecting pipework is generally one or two sizes larger than we typically use in the UK, allowing lower flow velocities and better energy efficiency. The pool operator must also operate the filtration and disinfection plant to a high standard, in compliance with DIN 19643. It is interesting to note that this standard requires, for commissioning tests, that the filter is capable of being backwashed at full speed with the top hatch removed, demonstrating that the backwash drain pipe allows water to run freely under gravity without any restriction on the backwash flow. This is a key feature in ensuring the filter media is thoroughly cleaned. There are also numerous other requirements that must be met to prove the hydraulic efficiency and hygienic operation of the pool. With the correct vessel design and installation techniques, sand filters can be highly efficient, simple to operate and maintain, and last for decades. The initial installation cost may be higher, but the treatment efficiency and energy benefits will be permanent. Personally, I think you’d be hard-pushed to find a more passive filtration method for commercial pools! STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

COMMERCIAL POOLS

Harnessing Technology To Keep Our Public Swimming Pools Afloat With many facilities in the public sector having an increasingly tough time, in this issue, we place the focus on commercial pool operators and highlight the challenges they are facing, ways in which they can harness technology to secure a more sustainable future plus hear from experts involved with the sector

T

he new £63m funding package, unveiled in this year’s Spring Budget, was widely welcomed by UK sporting bodies, swimming organisations and private sector firms, which face the major challenge of keeping the nation’s pools afloat. Recent analysis has shown that nearly 400 swimming pools have been lost across England since 2010, with the pandemic and rising energy costs contributing to even more recent closures. Furthermore, based on current pool build trends, the number of available pools could decrease by more than 40% – almost 2,000 pools – by the end of the decade, according to Swim England, the national body for swimming, in its 2021 report ‘A Decade of Decline’. But with the growing popularity of modern methods of construction (MMC) to build or retrofit pools coupled with new pool technologies, local authorities are being offered a vital operational lifeline. Add in a resurgence in swimming’s popularity post-COVID, and the outlook needn’t look entirely gloomy.

SECURING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE The new financial measures to ‘leisure-up’ the UK pool stock were a welcome support to many leisure operators – however the key aim will now be to make facilities more energy efficient and attractive to users, both to ensure their survival and play a part in wider carbon reduction ambitions. The £63m being managed by Sport England,

will allow local authorities to apply for funding for leisure centres with pools that face immediate cost pressures, including operational and maintenance costs as well as energy bills. Jane Nickerson, Swim England’s Chief Executive, said the fund would help facilities become more environmentally sustainable and was an important recognition of the incredibly challenging situation currently facing swimming pools and their value to local communities. “It will undoubtedly make a difference for a number of vulnerable pools as they battle with increased energy costs. Pool owners and operators are committed to reducing carbon emissions and there have been many positive examples from across the country,” she said.

HARNESSING THE PRIVATE SECTOR’S EXPERTISE Collaboration between the public organisations and private companies has therefore never been so crucial. Technology and more efficient ways of working will be a key factor in the fight to keep the UK’s leisure centres afloat as well as making them more sustainable, viable and future proofed. Kate Mcknight, UK & Ireland country manager at Myrtha Pools – a leading aquatics company that designs, manufactures and installs innovative stainless steel, modular

pools – said: “When we are brought on board by an architect, distributor, local authority or contractor, it’s important for us to really understand the needs of the client and the local community. “We consider the development of the intended pool programme, the users and really analyse the data that partner organisations such as Swim England produce. This helps to make an informed decision on the profile of a pool, whether a new one is required or if we are able to refurbish an existing pool to give the client the best option for their community needs. Ultimately, we aim to ensure the most sustainable option is selected.” Heating a swimming pool – both the water and surrounding air – accounts for nearly 40% of a facility’s running cost. As a result, a more sustainable and efficient building can have long-term operational savings as well as a lower carbon footprint. An example of this in action is the ground-breaking leisure facility in Spelthorne, which is on track to be one of the first wet and dry Passivhaus certified leisure centres in the world. Designed by sports and leisure experts GT3 Architects and Passivhaus designers Gale & Snowden, with national contractor Willmott Dixon appointed to deliver the project, Myrtha Pools is responsible for the pool, leisure and wellness elements. Utilising modern methods of construction

(MMC), a Myrtha pool has a 45% smaller carbon footprint than traditional methods of construction – which use tile and concrete – and offers cost savings of up to 20%. It was therefore a solid choice for the pioneering project, which is set to deliver energy and cost savings of up to 60% over the building’s lifecycle, and showcases the impact sustainable technology can have as well as how leisure centres can actively support a local authority’s net zero targets. The team will be closely monitoring the lessons learnt as well as the data generated by the facility, with a view to providing documentation around what is needed to create Passive and healthy buildings within the leisure industry.

UTILISING TECHNOLOGY TO MAXIMISE ASSETS Richard Lamburn, Head of Facilities at Swim England, said: “Swim England does a lot of work in advocating the need for swimming pools and we always aim to evidence the data, such as the increasing cost of gas and electricity, and demonstrate how technologies can reduce energy consumption costs and carbon. “We’ve been at the forefront of looking at different technology such as heat pumps, ceramic microfiltration, and considering the steel versus concrete argument. As a result, this year we submitted data about such technologies to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), in partnership with Sport England. “We were therefore delighted when the

bank of evidence we collated and shared with DCMS directly helped to secure the recent £63m government funding, as we showcased the impact that active investment could have on reducing carbon and energy consumption, rather than just supporting costs. “This should hopefully give operators some breathing room and allow them to look at new ways of maximising their assets to get more people through the door.” Swim England’s ‘A Decade of Decline’ report found that 48% of pools are more than 30 years old. With the resurgence in swimming’s popularity post-COVID, leisure centres are fighting to hold new swimmer’s interest – and spending. Kate said: “There are some real innovations within the leisure sector and now is the time to capitalise on this new technology for the benefit of both operators and end users. “The profile of a pool is hugely important as they need to be flexible in order to accommodate a varying programme of needs. For example, old traditional concrete pools often have a slope gradient, which gives a limited space of shallow water – but learn to swim classes are probably the biggest income generator for pools. By incorporating simple technology such as moveable floors and bulkheads you can cater for multiple users. needs and generate much needed income.”

lie ahead. “COVID was massively damaging but also helped fuel a swimming resurgence,” said Kate. “I don’t know any local operator that doesn’t have a waiting list on learn to swim programmes. There’s a whole generation that missed out on that opportunity when leisure facilities were forced to close or run limited operations. “Alongside this, the construction industry is intently focused on incorporating energy reducing and cost consumption programmes into their retrofit or new build projects. Redevelopment is shaping the market and we’re proud to be at the forefront of helping lead this mindset alongside organisations such as Swim England.” Richard added: “We are passionate about ensuring that swimming is accessible to all as learning to swim at a very early age and being confident in water is a life skill, which can enable us to maintain a level of activity in later life. “We’re cautiously optimistic about the future because of the technology and advancements that pool designers and manufacturers have made. Their work means it is possible to build pools at a much more sustainable level.” Swim England 01509 640700 www.swimming.org

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Community leisure centres have undoubtedly faced a tough time over the past decade, but both Kate and Richard believe positive times

With a heritage that traces back for over half a century, filter brand Lacron has been a tried, tested and trusted product within both the UK wet leisure industry and further afield too. n 1969 Tony Carr was asked by his then fellow director (David Stevens) if he could arrange to have a swimming pool built at their home in Rodmersham near Sittingbourne in Kent. Tony always had an enquiring mind so he decided to research where the equipment for swimming pools were made, as at the time, a private swimming pool in the UK was quite a rarity. In his quest, Tony discovered that almost all the equipment (particularly the filters and alike) were being imported from the USA. Through his research Tony came across a company called Norcal based near Croydon who were one of the main importers and distributers of swimming pool equipment. Tony set up a meeting with the Managing Director of Norcal – a Mr Bill Trusson – and during that first meeting they discovered that they had both lived in London as youngsters and from that moment a real friendship was born. Over a few glasses of whiskey, Bill explained to Tony that the biggest problem at that time was the shipping cost and the delays in receiving filters from America. At the time it seemed that if the domestic market in the USA was very busy then exports to Europe suffered, plus the fact

that the filters being very bulky, they cost a small fortune to ship across the pond, especially if it was by air freight! Tony collected all the equipment from Norcal required for the swimming pool which he project managed and at the same time, he investigated the possibility to manufacture filter vessels in the UK. The swimming pool was completed and Tony had learned a considerable knowledge of how the pool should be constructed and the importance of the hydraulics and filtration system. Tony also researched and found a local fibreglass manufacturing company based on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, and arranged for them to make some prototype filters. The first batch were manufactured in a lovely shade of dark brown with a flat clear polycarbonate lid which was secured by 8 threaded studs. These early filters were often referred to by the pool trade as ‘Chocolate Drops’. In order to increase sales other colours were introduced which

As time went by Lacron filters were not only used for swimming pool applications but also for irrigation systems, fish farming, animal pools in zoos, horse rehabilitation tanks and many others” 42 October 2023 SPN 42-43_SPN_October_2023_Lacron_Anniversary_alt2.indd 42

were initially marketed as exclusive lines to certain customers of Norcal who had now become the UK distributor for the product. But what of the name I hear you ask… not long after those first few prototypes appeared, Bill and Tony had another meeting and after another couple of glasses of whiskey they settled on reversing the Norcal name and Lacron was born! Those early Lacron ‘Chocolate Drop’ filters (due to the expansion arising from operating pressures) often developed leaks from the studs and lid area, so Tony and his son Chris regularly spent weekends travelling around England repairing any faulty units as a means to give full customer support. To improve product reliability, manufacturing was taken in house at a small industrial unit near Sittingbourne and a new injection moulded and threaded lid was developed. This proved to be a vast improvement over the leaky flat lids of the early prototypes. Soon after the new Lacron lid was introduced, tooling was made for an injection moulded lateral system which was also very well received by customers. In 1972, as the sales of Lacron filters grew at pace, a new Kent-based home was acquired for both the manufacturing, storage and offices for the company – the ‘Oast House’ on London Road in Teynham. The following year, Lacron filters were exhibited at a swimming pool trade show in Paris and from that show, sales of Lacron filters flourished all around Europe and beyond.

Sadly, Tony Carr contracted cancer in the late 1970s and passed away in 1979. However, Tony’s wife; Tricia, who had been the Company Secretary of Lacron since its inception took over the reins as Managing Director and the company continued growing. Not long after, Tony and Tricia’s son Chris joined the company having completed his apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and assisted in the development of new products and stream-lining production. In 1980 Lacron’s UK distributor Norcal, had a massive fire which more or less destroyed their entire warehouse and stock. Not long after the fire Bill Trusson was diagnosed with cancer and he also sadly passed away. Despite enormous difficulties the company Norcal re-formed in a new premises near Gatwick with Bill’s son – Bob Trusson partnering up with David Mathers. Between them and with support from a few suppliers they expanded their customer base in the UK to be one of the most successful pool equipment distributors. Through the 1980s the Lacron range increased in size where larger commercial deep bed filters were introduced as well as smaller ‘top mount’ valve versions which offered a more compact layout for the plantroom. Additionally, product improvements were made along the way, notably the injection moulded and threaded bulk-head fittings, air bleed caps. As time went by Lacron filters were not only used for swimming pool applications but also for irrigation systems, fish farming, animal pools in zoos, horse rehabilitation tanks and many others. In fact, at one time, water from the Nile in Egypt was filtered by Lacron filters in order to increase the production of crops grown there. Such successes led to the banana plantations of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands being almost exclusively irrigated by Lacron filters using reservoir water. By the late 1980s Lacron filters were not only well known throughout Europe in their new blue and white livery, but they were also supplied to the Middle East and as far as Japan and Australia, namely Weir Engineering. Because of the freight costs of shipping directly to Australia, Lacron began shipping filters in kit form ready for assembly in Malaysia, which ultimately became the start of a long-term cooperation with Waterco

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 42-43_SPN_October_2023_Lacron_Anniversary_alt2.indd 43

who ultimately acquired Weir Engineering in Australia. The Lacron filter parts once assembled were then shipped across to Australia and as time went on, Waterco became the major supplier to the Australian market. During the 1990s Lacron Technical Director Chris Carr designed and developed new commercial filter product ranges and due to their size, a much larger factory was built adjacent to the Oast House premises which was completed in 1999. The same site is still in use today after nearly 25 years by the new owner of Lacron – Waterco. In 2003 Lacron entered a new partnership with Waterco whose head office

is in Sydney, Australia. The new partnership gave Lacron a whole host of new products to greatly enhance the very popular filter range. Today, although there is still a pump assembly line in operation at the Sittingbourne works, the vast majority of products are manufactured in the Far East and shipped to Sittingbourne in the UK which is now a distribution hub. Waterco being the parent company of Lacron will this year be celebrating 20 years since their acquisition of Lacron Ltd. Plastica Continues To Invest In Future Business For more than 50 years, Plastica has continued to ride the wave of an expanding UK wet leisure industry and in this issue, we take a closer look at how they are investing in machinery and production technology, to better serve the need of their wide range of clients around the country, and further afield

P

lastica hit their half century last year trading as an independent swimming pool manufacturer. In that time the company has seen many changes and has learnt to adapt and grow according to the financial climate they find themselves in. In the last couple of years, there was a boom in above-ground wooden pools and water treatment due to lockdown. This year, Plastica has seen an increase in commercial enquiries as swimming pool facilities look for energy saving products to see them through the global energy crisis. With the potential for market conditions and demand to change from one year to the next, flexibility has been key to the company’s success. It helps that the company has a broad selection of swimming pool products manufactured in-house. In fact over 80% of their business is from their top-quality products, made in their factory based near the South Coast. Plastica employs a large group of loyal staff with years of experience and pride themselves in their commitment to manufacturing in the UK. One benefit of manufacturing in-house is it keeps the cost lower, ensuring the customer reaps the rewards of a first-class competitively priced product, that is made in Britain and complies with ISO 9001 certified standards, set by the British Assessment Bureau. Investments have been made in various departments this year, with upgraded machinery and tools to help make the production process more efficient. In the engineering department, a Mandrel Bender was purchased which means they can offer longer handrails and ladders. It is also quicker to change tooling to achieve both tight and large radii respectively. It only took the team a single day to

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 45_SPN_October_2023_Company_Focus_Plastica.indd 45

complete their training. Dan, Plastica’s Engineering Supervisor said: “The new machine is more user-friendly. It comes with CAD/CAM software that lets us pre-test a bending program which aids quoting and ultimately, we cut down on waste material. It is also quicker to change tooling reducing lead times and batch sizes which leads to less stock holding freeing up valuable space.” Plastica manufacture as much as possible in-house. They pride themselves in their ability to offer bespoke sizes for ladders, hand and grab, safety and support rails to give their customers a vast array of options. Available in 304 grade and 316 stainless steel. Their custom stainless steel ladders and handrails are suitable for both domestic and commercial installation with optional cross bracing available for extra strength. With the increase in commercial business, a new Welding Bench has also been installed. This has been essential in the production of Plastica’s large modular bench systems, which have been developed to break down into smaller sections, for ease of handling and despatch to be re-assembled on site. Jody, Plastica’s resident tech-wiz and engineer said: “With the development of the new commercial bench system, it was an essential piece of equipment to ensure each individual section was 100% compatible with its adjoining section. Maintaining precise angles and straight linear runs throughout. Coupled with the skill and experience in the production department, the resulting

final product speaks for itself.” During the execution of welded constructions, a very large part of the time, is taken in the preparation of the material for the welding process. The Welding Bench enables the most precise positioning of the components of the structure in the shortest possible time to achieve optimal profitability of the production process. An area of the business that not many people know Plastica manufacture in-house is ABS pipe and fittings. A new Extruder was installed last month, consisting of a vacuum bath, a haul-off, a new saw and tilt table. The start-up time is now faster, with quicker die/pin changes and the whole system is generally more energy efficient. Mark, the Mouldings Manager estimated a 20% increase in production so far. Plastica is proud to take control over the quality and what they produce as they offer a bespoke service to suit their trade customers’ needs. Anything from an unusual shaped liner or designing a unique handrail. Manufacturing their own goods in-house gives Plastica the flexibility of offering this added service to their trade customers. HIGH-END HOT TUBS

A Premium Tub Experience Providing a setting that offers users the ultimate hot tub experience for relaxation, recuperation and more, the premium end of the market is a somewhat niche, yet lucrative and therefore key market segment for manufacturers and retailers. Featuring models retailing over the £10,000 mark, high-end hot tubs boast the sector’s latest innovations and technology. This issue, we look at the brands and models competing at the luxury end of the market By Jon Wadeson

T

he premium end of any market sector is always a key battleground for manufacturers and retailers alike, and in the world of high-end hot tubs, competition to secure sales has been a challenge again this year, although models at the top end of any sector always seem to be somewhat insulated when the wider market is struggling. Range-topping products are a chance to fully showcase each brand’s design capabilities, imagination, quality and more to potential customers. With budgets often well into five-figure territory for these models, they really need to perform as they are important in providing healthy returns too! Customers looking to invest in this sector quite rightly demand the latest features and innovations combined with a sense of style and exclusivity. They also expect that their premium investment will be enjoyed with the minimum amount of effort and for many years to come. With brands and distributors looking to stay one-step ahead of the competition, they have been quick to offer something different to affluent UK customers. The result is some truly stunning models which are packed with all the latest bells and whistles to satisfy the needs of these higher spending clients. With premium being the name of the game, we take a look at just some of the competing models and brands in the sector.

NEW FOR 2023 – SUPERIOR’S PREMIUM ‘AQUASOLUS’ RANGE At the start of the year, Superior Wellness were delighted to announce the launch of AquaSolus, a brand new range of luxury hot tubs. The AquaSolus product range offers six hot tubs. It encompasses various well sculptured models, from all seater models to models with one lounger. Superior Wellness’ AquaSolus hot tubs have been carefully designed with hydrotherapy at the forefront

The AquaSolus range has the aim of improving wellness and the hot tubs have been carefully designed with hydrotherapy at the forefront. With AquaSolus, owners can have confidence in the components used. Superior Wellness are proud to partner with industry leading suppliers to produce the highest quality hot tubs with the some of the best hydrotherapy experiences. All AquaSolus hot tubs are built around an impressive tubular stainless-steel framework, due to its robustness the company are proud to give a lifetime warranty on its integrity. In a world of increasing energy costs, it’s vitally important to put energy efficient insulation at the forefront when designing a new hot tub and the AquaSolus range is no exception. Utilising a tried and tested Heatlock Insulation Process, where the exterior of the spas is insulated in the same way we insulate our homes, an inner heat shield is created. Using this method, heat is reflected and then used to help maintain the temperature of the spa through heat transfer via the vast amount of plumbing. This process assists with the overall running costs.

WHIRLCARE – AWG’S GERMANMADE LUXURY SPA BRAND 2023 has been another exciting year for the Aqua Warehouse Group (AWG). At the start of the year they introduced a new Germanmade range of hot tubs and swim spas to the UK. Whirlcare is a relatively new brand to the sector and the Essex-based company are the exclusive UK distributor for their products. Founded by Managing Director Richard Hart, AWG has grown from a single brand supplier in 2003 to multiple brands today, all within the hot tub and outdoor living sectors. Commenting on the range, Richard said: “In my 20 years of experience in the industry I have never come across hot tubs and swim spas built to such high quality. products that are available exclusively through Sunbeach Spas. Featuring one of the thickest and toughest shells on the market and strong frames, Oasis Spas are built to last! They are also some of the most energy efficient hot tubs available, with features including: • Multiple layers of high density foam which reduce heat loss significantly • Low current pumps consume less energy than a 75W light bulb • Covers which use high density foam to create a seal minimising heat loss. The inside of the each Oasis Spa routes warm air back into the system to reduce the energy required to heat the water, and during circulation the water is kept at a regular temperature, reducing the energy used in a standard heating/cooling cycle. Two models which sit at the top of the Oasis range are the HE-570 five person hot tub and the HE-760 six person model. In addition to the ‘green’ features already outlined, both models come complete with a multi-layered cabinet insulation for high thermal efficiency. They’re fitted with up-todate Gecko electronics and controls, and the ozone module has a boost chamber for ultra clear water. Oasis have implemented cutting edge technology to fit the spas with a double filtration system and on the entertainment side, the HE range also boasts a Gecko Instream 2 music system with a 2 transducer speaker system and subwoofer, as well as illuminated valve controls and exterior corner lighting.

A ‘GREEN’ APPROACH AND MODERN LOOKS – THE WELLIS LIFE RANGE New design, new solutions, and a new insulation system are just some of the groundbreaking and game changing features of Wellis’ updated hot tubs that were launched earlier in the year. With 61 patents and lots of unique innovations, according to Wellis, the new product line is unrivalled in the world in terms of energy efficiency. Thanks to the extremely favourable energy usage, daily consumption has been reduced greatly to 2.9 kW (from a daily consumption of around 5 kW) in the case of a five-person model. For three years prior to their launch, designers had been working to create the most eco-friendly Wellis spa collection to date. According to the brand, these are the greenest spas in the world, since they have achieved more efficient test results during use than the current best-consumption hot tubs on the market. Wellis have paid special attention to energy-efficient solutions, and during

Wellis’ well-known high-end models all have new Life models – as here with the new Everest Life Premium model

production, they prioritise sustainability and environmentally conscious production technologies. Accordingly, Wellis’ revised hot tubs have been given the name ‘Life’ and their well-known high-end models, including the Everest, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and more, all have new Life models in two versions – Premium and Deluxe. In addition to the innovative technological solutions, a lot of emphasis on the smallest details of the various design elements has been applied too. Wellis Life product lines bring a unique massage experience to the homes of customers worldwide as flagships of innovation and energy efficiency. As a result of the company’s further unique innovative developments, and by using half as many hydromassage motors, Wellis say they have achieved a much stronger performance and the massage experience is even more relaxing.

and pools. With their in-house drawing office, they are able to collaborate with architects and designers and can even work with a sketch from the client to produce precise drawings and renders which help the end user to visualise the finished project. GMT strongly recommend the use of joint point tiles as the whole surface area of the tile is in contact with the adhesive giving the ideal bond. In the past, issues with mesh backed tiles have led to the company now testing them for suitability before use and advising clients about possible issues, but the ultimate decision to use them or not is made by the client. Another benefit of a tiled spa is the longevity, at GMT they produce a fibreglass shell using marine grade resins and gelcoats, all of which are insulated and sitting on a stainless-steel cradle with adjustable swivel feet giving a sturdy base on which to tile. Of huge benefit is the ability to have a large spa or pool made in sections which are then joined and tiled by their factory workmen on site giving the appearance of a one-piece pool, this is of particular benefit when the site has restricted access or indeed if the pool is too big to be transported in one piece. GMT’s ethos remains constant – to supply a superior quality product and service to their ever-growing list of customers both in the UK

and abroad. They are proud to be members of SPATA and an ISO registered company and offer a superior ten-year warranty on all their pools, spas and swim spas.

A COMPLETE DESIGN, BUILD AND SERVICE PACKAGE FROM TOPLINE Topline Pools and Wellness are one of the UK’s leading specialists in the design, manufacture, build and maintenance of commercial and domestic luxury swimming pools and wellness rooms. So it’s no surprise that they are able to offer a range of exceptional mosaic tiled spas with decorative tiles in a range of sizes and designs, something that gives them the flexibility to meet any of their customers’ requirements. All Topline’s mosaic tiled spas are specially designed, manufactured, installed and serviced by their in-house teams, ensuring the best quality throughout the project and beyond. This enables their spas to handle the demands of everyday commercial or domestic use. They offer varied levels of seating and loungers to enable users the choice of sitting, standing or lounging providing the utmost comfort and relaxation. Topline’s skilled craftsmen have the experience and design skills to create any tiled spa to a customer’s exact requirements and bring the ‘wow’ factor to a home, hotel or wellness facility with their stunning selection

of tile patterns and colours. Both freeboard/skimmer and deck level spas are available with the latter being a popular option in the commercial leisure industry as overflow spas tend to be larger allowing several users to enter or leave as the water level is maintained and the advanced filtration clears, cleans and filters the water constantly. Various standard shapes and sizes of mosaic tiled deck level spa are available from round or square to octagon and oval, but they are able to provide any bespoke size or shape required.

CERTIKIN – THE HOME OF THE TILED SPA AND MUCH MORE For exemplary sales and technical support coupled with trust and reliability, when it comes to purchasing a tiled spa, it’s hard to beat Certikin. It is the perfect solution for new build or refurbishment projects, and particularly where access is a problem, as it comes with the option of being delivered in two halves. CASE STUDY CANNES HOTEL GETS THE 5 STAR SPA TREATMENT One of GMT Spas most recent bespoke projects incorporated many of the challenges they commonly overcome for their customers, as well as some new ones. The location for the spa was a rooftop of an 8-storey hotel in the heart of Cannes in France. The size of spa was approximately 7m x 4m, this meant the spa would have to be made in two sections, suitable for transport, joining and craning onto the rooftop. The customer’s design included 3 acrylic windows to make the most of the unobstructed views of the Cannes waterfront

50 October 2023 SPN 49+50+52_SPN_October_2023_Tiled+Swim_Spas.indd 50

and the Mediterranean Sea. These windows also act as in infinity edge, giving a seamless connection with the surrounding views, by displacing the water into a built-in channel that also functions as the balance tank for the spa. The channel is hidden below the surrounding decking to further

reduce the impact of the spa. The project features a roller cover that is hidden under a bench in the spa when not in use. As the spa was made sectionally, the cover and one of the windows had to be installed once it was in position and designing these features to make this possible was an important part of the design and manufacture process. The final stage was finishing the joining and tiling to the same high standard as the work carried out in GMT’s factory, allowing the customer to incorporate it with the surrounding landscaping of the rooftop.

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK

Flying The Flag For British-made Pool Products While a lot of products used in the wet leisure sector are produced abroad, there are numerous quality solutions that are made in the UK too – and in addition to helping the wider economy and providing jobs, there are a number of additional benefits to buying goods that have been manufactured in the UK. In this issue, we take a closer look at those benefits and some of the products within the swimming pool sector that are flying the flag for British manufacturing By Jon Wadeson

T

he swimming pool sector in the UK is actually a very mature market and as such, has a number of established brands supplying products and services around the country and further afield. Within this group you can find a much smaller number of businesses which manufacture their own products right here in Britain. Often, these companies can trace their roots back several decades and over the years, they have been tackling the specific challenges that pool ownership in the UK poses and developing products to assist owners and operators within the sector. So what are the benefits of buying one of these British produced products? Well there are many but the obvious one is that it helps to keep UK people employed meaning that the economy benefits from money being paid to local people who then are likely to spend most of their income here in Britain. There are eco-friendly reasons too. With local manufacturing there should be a much lower impact on the environment as products are supplied to the immediate market – and that’s something which is becoming increasingly important to many buyers. Another reason is that British manufacturing genuinely is amongst the best in the world, resulting in quality products, The in-house production facility at Certikin’s new HQ is able to manufacture a range of new and replacement products using high density polyethylene (HDPE)

time after time. Companies who manufacture in the UK can usually provide much shorter lead times and can often respond to special requests much quicker than companies who import products. Should something go wrong with a UK produced product, it’s likely it can be repaired or replaced much more easily too. Finally, currency exchange rate fluctuations have a much lower impact on products manufactured in the UK. It’s not just a case of national pride or flag waving – there are genuine and persuasive arguments to source products manufactured in the UK and we take a look at companies and products that are proud to call the UK home.

APPLY BRITISH QUALITY THROUGHOUT ANY POOL PROJECT WITH CERTIKIN Certikin have a genuine and long-standing belief in the importance of supporting British industry. That is why they are proud that many of their leading products are manufactured right here in the UK. The range of UK products by Certikin is extensive meaning you can apply British quality throughout any pool project. Starting with the basics, Certikin’s range of white goods including skimmers, main drains, inlets, pipes and fittings can be installed alongside their PU9 and PU6

lights which are the most popular and reliable lights in the pool industry. For perfectly clean and clear water, Certikin’s range of British built UV units have been specifically designed to prevent green water in swimming pools and reduce chemical consumption. Certikin’s new glass media is environmentally friendly and a viable alternative to sand; made from glass recycled in the UK, it doesn’t involve intrusive mining and the use of scarce resources. As you would expect from the market leader, Certikin have a range of heating options for any size of pool, many of which have the stamp of British quality. They are renowned for their oil and gas boilers, and with the latter, the Genie range of gas condensing pool heaters are one of the world’s only condensing pool heaters. The in-house production facility at Certikin’s new HQ is able to manufacture a range of new and replacement products using high density polyethylene (HDPE). This material offers high chemical resistance, is UV stable and is virtually unbreakable. It is available in an extensive colour palette which includes most RAL colours and can be used to produce any size or shape grating along with a wide range of other engineered plastic items. Certikin’s wooden pools offer the complete package, British built to the highest quality they are a superb addition to any garden. The pools are supplied complete with a 30 thou liner which is manufactured at Certikin’s own factory located in Leeds. The company has been manufacturing liners and covers for over 15 years and is now established as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers for these products.

HEATFORM – HIGH PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED IN DEVON Britain holds a substantial reputation in the manufacturing industry and Lighthouse are proud to be play a part in promoting UK manufactured products and ingenuity on the world stage. The world is changing fast and technology, it would seem, even faster. Staying abreast of these innovative new solutions and

approaches is a challenge that keeps the team at Lighthouse on their toes but one which drives them forward. That and the ability to listen to the market and their customers has resulted in some impressive and popular swimming pool essentials. Based in its factory in Plymouth, Devon, Lighthouse designs and manufactures a range of energy efficient and high performance swimming products under its house brand – HeatForm – and it was their panel pool system which kick-started the brand. Unlike many of the other standard panel systems on the market, HeatForm has a few key features which will impress even the most savvy of pool builders. Its simple and effective design is easy to build and its eco credentials are an easy sell in an increasingly energy conscious world. HeatForm has transformed the swimming pool construction process, not only making it quicker, easier and simpler to build the ‘pool basin’, but with the added value of insulation designed to keep heating bills to a minimum by reducing the amount of energy lost into the surrounding environment. Typically, this unique system can reduce a pool’s energy consumption by 50% compared to a traditional concrete pool. The insulation built into the toughened, fibreglass pool panels is made using 100% post consumer, recycled PET plastic which not only meets the stringent technical requirements for composites, but also helps to preserve and enhance the human environment. HeatForm’s straightforward modular system caters for a broad range of settings from the most compact of garden sites to large scale commercial settings.

40 years, pioneered the innovation, design and manufacture of modern, highly energy efficient, environmental control systems for swimming pools. During this time the brand has become a market leader in this field with an enviable reputation for quality. Heatstar units contain some of the very best specialist components from the USA and Europe but the complete product, its design and construction, is only produced in Heatstar’s own manufacturing facility on the Isle of Wight in the South of England. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, Heatstar products now display new UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) the new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed in the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). Because ‘quality’ is at the heart of every Heatstar product the company’s philosophy is simple – the best place to build their products is in their own UK factory by the people who have the company’s values in their DNA and who can deliver the company’s exacting standards in build quality and reliability. The brand is proud of its heritage as a British manufacturer. It is one of the reasons why Heatstar, in addition to its UK success, exports to customers all around the world including Europe, Russia, China and a

multitude of other prominent territories. Although Heatstar products are designed, developed and manufactured in the UK they are still very much specified worldwide and can be found in leading hotels and leisure facilities around the globe. Intopool were also the first manufacturer to produce commercial telescopic reels to reduce carriage costs. When the company first designed their Monaco range of reels for domestic and commercial pools, they were advised to have tools made in China and have some of the smaller items mass produced there too “because it’s much cheaper”. However, Intopool preferred to keep as much as possible made in the UK, and ideally, as locally as possible. For more than 20 years all of Intopool’s tooling has been made by a Kent-based toolmaker plus all component parts are sourced from UK companies, with just a couple coming from EU countries, with any subcontracted work being done by small, local companies. Intopool take pride in their high quality reel systems which are fast becoming the reel of choice for both swimming pool engineers and end users alike. When talking about their products, the company take great pride in being able to say that they are ‘made in Britain’.

These days the options are unlimited so it comes down to style, design and the ultimate look of the finished pool that will determine the light installation.

Both easy to install and easy to operate, GC Hub panels are created based on the owner’s unique specifications and requirements for a custom-fit solution. “GC Hub control panels are built on our premises and every single one is different,” explained Simon Beeby, Technical Engineer at Golden Coast. “They are modular systems so can be adapted to multiple hardware configurations and can be easily upgraded for future proofing. We can even customise the front with company branding. Plus our expert team is on hand after installation to offer

technical support whenever you need it.” GC Hub panels are available as single or three-phase units, and can be operated using buttons, wireless remote or an IP65 touchscreen. “Anything from a domestic set up to a commercial facility can benefit from GC Hub,” said Simon. “It can control multiple bodies of water such as a main pool and a spa and can be linked to other management control systems. “If you’re looking for a way to streamline your pool operation, talk to our team about what a GC Hub control panel could do for you. Nothing is off the shelf so you can be sure that your GC Hub has been built with only you and your pool in mind.”

ENCLOSURES

An Effective Addition To Any Outdoor Pool With the ability to provide year-round swimming, regardless of the UK weather, pool enclosures also reduce both maintenance and running costs for both commercial and domestic owners, plus they offer built-in safety too. There’s no doubt that an enclosure is a big investment, but having one means owners can maximise the full potential of their swimming pool. From large to small and to suit almost any size and shape of pool, we take a look at the options that are available to extend the use of swimming pools across the UK By Jon Wadeson

A

n outdoor pool of any size is an investment, more often than not a sizeable one, so not being able to use it year-round means its full potential isn’t being realised. And that’s where an enclosure comes in. Opting for an effective outdoor pool cover-up means that swimming and pool-based outdoor leisure time can not only continue way past the normal seasonal shut down, but it can often continue throughout the worst of the weather too, maximising a pool’s full potential. What’s more, after the initial enclosure investment, pool owners in the residential and commercial sectors can also look to achieve some cost savings – or at least minimise the rises due to high and potentially escalating energy and other running costs that are also rising with this higher than usual level of inflation. The benefits don’t stop there though. Enclosures provide a number of additional safety benefits. They make it almost impossible for children or pets to access the pool area unattended, slips and falls can also be reduced by keeping the surrounding area free from ice and rain, plus the glazing in many enclosures protects swimmers from harmful UV rays. Yes, enclosures are clearly an investment, often a substantial one, but with so many benefits provided for pool owners through their installation, it’s easy to see why they are

an increasingly popular choice. There is a fantastic selection of fabulous enclosures that come in a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs, the majority of sites and the most particular of customers too. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the enclosure solutions that are available for outdoor pools.

CERTIKIN’S ENHANCED AQUACOMET RANGE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS Certikin’s popular Aquacomet enclosure range now features a new, high level, wide span telescopic pool enclosure. With external widths of 4 - 7m and a height range from 2.2 - 2.5m (depending on the pool width), the Charisma is an impressive addition to the extensive Aquacomet range. Three, four, five and six bay enclosure options are available. Featuring 4mm solid, transparent polycarbonate glazing, it comes with UV resistance on both sides of the glazing and carries a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. The Charisma features guide rails on both sides and a manual positioning system. Five colourways are available: anthracite, jet black, white, white aluminium and grey aluminium. Certikin offers a huge range of enclosures, which are suitable for any pool size or shape. Other options include their entry level enclosures which are supplied flat-packed

and ready to build. These enclosures come in three different sizes with a choice of two glazing options. Everything is supplied in a box together with an assembly manual making them a fast and cost-effective way to fit a high quality pool enclosure. With a uniquely low profile and solid design, the AQ Box enclosure is perfect for those looking for a simple yet durable solution. The most popular model in Certikin’s range is the Endless Summer enclosure. It is fixed along its length, which allows the windows and wall sections to slide up into the roof, leaving the sides open – a key advantage over traditional enclosure models. The rigid and durable structure offers elegant and graceful aesthetics while still retaining key safety and protective features. For those who desire the least intrusive pool enclosure possible, the Horizontal enclosure combines an ultra-low telescopic design with durable construction. It’s perfect for spaces where height may be an issue without compromising on strength and flexibility.

AN EXTENSIVE RANGE, ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION… ALUKOV OFFERS IT ALL! Alukov is very proud to present the UK market with the widest range of enclosures from one manufacturer – from ultra-low, medium, high, free standing, lean-to and For pools that need an enclosure to be closed when in use, Alukov’s UNIVERSE NEO™ is a truly universal choice

ENCLOSURES spa domes – all enclosures are fully bespoke and can satisfy any need. Alukov are known as innovators within the sector and are constantly developing their products. Following the trend for popular ultra low enclosures (which must be open when the pool is in use) one of the newest models is the CHAMPION. With lightweight construction and telescopic segments, it features timeless design, solid materials and a sophisticated platform. It is available in two models with the eCHAMPION option featuring motors and a remote control for increased ease of use. The powerful but quiet operation of electric motors on both sides of the eCHAMPION allows users to open or close the pool enclosure smoothly. The motors are supplied with reliable integrated batteries that are automatically recharged by the built-in solar collectors. For pools that need an enclosure to be closed when in use, Alukov’s UNIVERSE NEO™ is a truly universal choice, especially for pools within the domestic sector. This cover offers the compromise between low and high enclosure. It features a rounded shape which gives a higher central line positioned over the middle of the pool. The wider the enclosure, the higher the centre of the building is. If owners opt for a wider model, a table, chairs or sun loungers can be placed under this enclosure. Alukov provide a full service from manufacturing to transport and even installation. Their preference is that the enclosures are fully pre-assembled in the factory and then transported in complete sections. This means that not only is the installation itself incredibly fast – half a day to one day, depending on size – it is also very clean.

COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS

Providing The Power For A More Complete Small Pool Experience When it comes to increasing the functionality of smaller pool spaces, countercurrent systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind the success of swim spas and an increasing number of their pool cousins are now benefitting from their incorporation. Providing the power for a wide range of pool users, they deliver a more complete experience. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the brands that are producing them By Jon Wadeson

P

ools of all shapes, sizes and types have become a popular and welcome addition to many homes over the last few years, but there’s a number of reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity. Perhaps there’s a restriction on space or budget. Maybe there’s aesthetic reasons why a large pool isn’t wanted or just won’t work. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only suitable option, but whilst they can be a lot of fun, they can also just seem to lack that certain something – and often, it’s the ability to enjoy a proper, uninterrupted swim – a fact, which sadly, is rather ironic. Thankfully, the answer to this problem for a number of pools and their owners is a counter-current system, and they’re use and incorporation into pools of a smaller nature, is quickly gaining traction with both the trade and consumers. Of course, their use isn’t restricted to size, but pools with a small footprint is clearly where they are best utilised and they really come into their own with the addition of one of these units. Once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to swim for as long as a user likes, plus their introduction often provides some additional hydrotherapy options along with some wow factor to impress the kids and guests alike! With discrete built-in along with over-thewall options available, there are no excuses for not exercising or maximising a pool area’s full potential – especially as there is now more choice than ever within the sector. So, with their popularity clearly on an upward trajectory, here, we take a closer look at some of the options and brands that are currently available.

SWIM LIKE A PRO WITH EVASTREAM FROM GOLDEN COAST A good quality counter-current unit can transform a pool. But to train like an athlete, you need a product like EVAstream. The EVAstream counter-current unit from Golden Coast delivers a powerful jet of water to swim against, helping to build strength and conditioning. “You don’t need a huge pool to get the best swimming experience,” Fit@Home lets said Luke Honnoraty, Sales customers control their Fastlane Pro Manager at Golden Coast. from any smart “Simply add a counterdevice current unit and you can swim for hours on end in an environment that is as challenging as you make it.” EVAstream provides exceptional output with a flow rate of up to 450m3/h, which can be adjusted between 10% and 100%. It is available in 3 variations: EVAstream Fit, Pro and Max, with each unit catering to varied levels of swimming experience and

requirements. “EVAstream enhances any pool experience, whether you’re using it to improve your fitness just to relax,” added Luke. “It is available as a recessed model for new pool builds, or as a compact and lightweight surface-mounted model for retrofitting onto existing pools. Importantly, it operates on a single-phase supply. This is different to many other products on the market which use a three-phase supply making them very expensive to install.” EVAstream fits to a standard 16A 230V connection, with a consumption of just 2.2kW. It has been extensively tested to ensure it meets the most stringent safety standards, including DIN EN16582-1/2/3, EN16713-2, EN13451-1/3.

COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS

Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, the SWIMEO S1 model features a functional, modern design

The Fastlane Pro from Endless Pools sits at the top end of the Certikin range and is a product which effectively turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it is also possible to add Fit@Home which lets the customer control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device, meaning that you can programme and repeat advanced, multispeed ‘interval’ workouts. What sets this counter-current apart is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering a fast, smooth swim current up to a 1:14/100m pace (a necessity for any serious swimmer). It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets users swim for as long as they like without turning. Certikin also supplies its own branded entry-level counter-current system – an affordable option designed for small private pools. It is equipped with a 3hp pump to create an adjustable counter-stream of water. The directional inlet allows a 15°

SWIMEO JET STREAM TURBINES – FOR SWIMMERS OF ALL ABILITIES Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, SWIMEO is a range of jet stream turbines for everybody – from beginners to advanced swimmers. Unlike some jet stream pumps, which offer limited power and uncertain reliability, the SWIMEO jet stream turbine is fully submerged, quiet and reliable. Manufactured in France by SIREM, these turbines are recommended for competitive and amateur swimmers looking for a private swimming pool counter-current solution to complement their traditional pool or open water training. The maximum power of the SWIMEO is equivalent to a swimming speed of 1 min 50 seconds per 100m. The products offer a fantastic flow power/ comfort ratio. The wide flow improves the body’s stability in the water and increases tolerance to lateral movements. With SWIMEO, the swimmer can move to either side of the flow without the risk of losing perceived power. All the turbines in the SWIMEO range are controlled either by a wireless remote control or via the smartphone application, which can be used to create training programmes. NO MATTER THE REQUIREMENT, UWE HAS A SOLUTION German manufacturer UWE lay claim to inventing the counter-current system in 1967 and their creation has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of swimming needs and abilities. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA counter-current system. It was designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, right where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, the pressure-sensitive single-button PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75m3/h to 225m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA. For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, popular choices are the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes and

Its sleek, minimalist design means it can be situated perfectly into wooden pools but Plastica can also supply stainless steel extensions to allow simple installation into concrete pool structures. Coupled to a Nadorself 3hp jet pump, this unit is capable of flowing at up to 60m3/h. Plastica’s X-Stream Duo counter-current unit is made with a stainless-steel niche and grab rail. It’s easy to install, gives a neater finish and is more powerful than over-the-wall alternative. The X-Stream duo, which comes with 2 of the Espa Wiper pumps, gives an impressive 100m3/h output. Each X-Stream Duo kit option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay

With options for all kinds of pools and various swimming abilities, this range meets the needs of swimmers at all levels. Each is suitable for children to enjoy family pool time or for professional and recreational swimmers alike. Users can download a training App to design their own swimming programmes and new for this year is the LED ring lighting that can be controlled via the same App.

LIGHTHOUSE’S VELOCITY UNIT FEATURES INVERTER TECHNOLOGY Designed and manufactured in the UK by the HeatForm team at Lighthouse, the Velocity is the next generation counter-current swim jet for the modern athlete and was created after years of research and development. It is available to either retrofit to an existing pool or has the option to be hidden away behind a bespoke panel system. Whether swimming to compete, for pleasure or to just to stay fit, Velocity’s easily adjustable flow rates enable everyone to jump in and lose themselves swimming against the current. The flow of water at all speeds is smooth,

Ocea UK offers two turbine models – the built-in Hydrostar as shown here, and the EasyStar hanging system

wide and deep, providing users with the full body feeling of swimming in a river current which results in a more natural experience. At its heart, Velocity is powered by a 4kW 5hp inverter driven motor. The hydraulically driven propeller is capable of moving water at up to 1,000m3/h, enabling even the sportiest of swimmers a full sprint work out. The Velocity can reach swim speeds of 58s/100m but its variable speed drive means that users can tailor the swim to suit any workout and swim ability. The speed is fully adjustable via either the main control box or included ip68 waterproof remote control and comes with ten pre-programmed levels which can be also be adjusted within 2% increments to create the exact level of flow desired. The main drive system also has an in-built LED display

showing the flow rate at any given time, to assist with a consistent training programme. The addition of the Velocity Performance Control System has also given swimmers the ability to use the Velocity as a training tool with the ability to set full routines of interval swimming. The system gives each user the option to programme their own training plan or several training plans for different periods of intensity training.

SHOW PREVIEWS

It’s Show Time! With the domestic and international show season just around the corner, we preview two important European industry exhibitions taking place this autumn – aquanale in Cologne, Germany and Spain’s Piscina & Wellness Barcelona – both of which are likely to set the tone for the 2024 season! By Jon Wadeson

20 YEARS OF AQUANALE: ALL THE SIGNS POINT TO SUCCESS With days rather than weeks now left to go before the start of aquanale, all the signs point to it being a success. The international event is primed to bring the who’s who of the industry together in a single location once again. As one of the world’s leading industry events, it is a must-attend for everyone wanting to make a splash in the pool, sauna, wellness and ambience sectors. This is one of only a few places where all market partners get a comprehensive overview of what’s new: the latest technologies, product innovations, process optimisations and visionary planning. aquanale will take place in Cologne from 24 to 27 October 2023 in co-location with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities. The event has been held since 2003 and takes place every two years. Its conceptual sponsor is the German Federal Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness (bsw/Bundesverband Schwimmbad und Wellness e.V.). Around 280 companies from 31 countries will exhibit in an area which will extend over approximately 28,000m2 in Halls 7 and 8 of the Cologne trade fair grounds this year. Around 50% of the exhibitors are based abroad. The largest contingents from outside Germany come from France, Belgium, Italy and Poland. aquanale will present a

full range of topics relating to the latest products and designs for modern, sustainable and innovative swimming pool and wellness facilities. A trade fair is the ideal communication platform to give all market players an excellent and comprehensive overview of new technologies, smart concepts and product innovations. It also facilitates in-depth discussions that generate new leads and establish business relationships. This is reflected in the strong presence of market-leading companies, which take vital inspiration from aquanale. All aspects of the public and private pool, wellness, sauna and spa segments are represented at aquanale in six, clearly defined theme worlds. This is where German and international trade fair visitors from specialised pool construction companies, local authorities, water parks, architects and planning offices, hotels, day spas, gyms, sanitary, heating and air-conditioning companies as well as premium private visitors can gain in-depth insights into the comprehensive spectrum of products,

conveniently and within short walking distances. The specialised event programme is guaranteed to provide international trade visitors with added value and an edge in terms of industry knowledge. Once again, the link between the private and public pool segments will be provided by the International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum (ISWF), which is being staged for the tenth time at aquanale. In collaboration with the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) and the Federal Association of German Swimming Pool Professionals (BDS), bsw will offer an informative and topic-focused specialised programme in Hall 7 on three congress days. The congress will cover subjects of interest to the public pool operators target group as well as many technical and topical matters relevant to swimming pool construction companies, planning agencies and firms of architects. The BDS will contribute to the programme with sessions on ‘Further education and training for swimming pool supervisors, lifeguards and pool attendants’ and ‘Modernisation of the profession’. In Hall 8, the European Waterpark Association (EWA) will be presenting a special exhibition on the topic of sustainability entitled ‘Green Waterparks’. The focus will be on innovations that can reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of public pools. In addition, the quality association for European leisure pools and spas will highlight the outstanding performance of its member companies. The 2023 winners of the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards will also be

SHOW PREVIEWS announced at aquanale. The swimming pool industry prizes have been awarded annually since 2013 by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) in cooperation with bsw and other European swimming pool associations. The awards recognise the most beautiful domestic indoor and outdoor pool, hot tub and spa projects and the prize-giving ceremony, hosted by EUSA President Bert Granderath, will take place at 4.30pm on Tuesday 24 October. For the upcoming event, aquanale has entered into a strategic partnership with the Finnish sauna industry network Sauna from Finland. For the first time, a dedicated exhibition area will raise the visibility of companies from Finland and increase support for their export activities. Members and partners of the network will present their products and services and through workshops, inspiring tours and live sauna experiences, Sauna from Finland aims to give visitors a taste of the Finnish way of life. aquanale +49 1806 603 500 www.aquanale.com

PISCINA & WELLNESS BARCELONA PREPARES FOR ITS MOST INTERNATIONAL EDITION YET! With more exhibitors, more space and record-breaking international participation, Piscina & Wellness Barcelona continues to grow and beat all forecasts. As the leading event in Spain and a European benchmark in the industry, the event has almost doubled the figures of its previous edition, with 300 confirmed exhibiting companies and 40,000m2 of gross floor space. In addition, the strong increase in international participation is outstanding, which now accounts for 68% of the total offer with firms from up to 26 countries. Organised by Fira de Barcelona with the support of the Spanish swimming pool industry association ASOFAP, Piscina & Wellness Barcelona will

All aspects of the public and private pool, wellness, sauna and spa segments are represented at aquanale in six, clearly defined theme worlds” bring together, from 27 to 30 November at the Gran Via venue, the entire value chain of companies involved in both public and private swimming pool products, as well as facilities, equipment and accessories related to wellness, spa, fitness and outdoor decor. This year the solutions for a sustainable, connected and more experiential swimming pool will be the highlight of the show. In the commercial offer of the show, the international nature of the exhibitors has reached 68%, which is up 8% from 2021 – the highest share in the history of the show since it was established in 1994. International companies from 26 countries, including China, France, Turkey, Italy, the Netherlands, the USA, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Canada, Israel and the Czech Republic, will be exhibiting. The President of the show’s Organising Committee, Eloi Planes, is pleased with this growth “which confirms Piscina & Wellness Barcelona as the most international event on the sector’s European tradeshow calendar and underlines the interest awakened by the Spanish market, with the second largest swimming pool park in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, which is increasingly receptive to adopting solutions and technologies that improve sustainability, ease maintenance and increase the comfort of users”. Ángel Celorrio, Director of Piscina Wellness Barcelona, said: “The attendance figures achieved so far, which could still increase until the event opens, make the event one of the best in the last ten years, in line with the good performance of the industry, which is one of the most dynamic in the

Spanish economy and firmly committed to sustainability.” The swimming pool industry provides products and services for both new construction and the refurbishment and maintenance of the more than 1.3 million swimming pools in Spain, as well as for wellness centres and other aquatic facilities. The good results in the first half of the year mean that the Spanish swimming pool industry is expected to grow by 3% in 2023, according to ASOFAP’s Sector Barometer. This percentage indicates a normalisation of turnover after the exceptional boost in demand experienced during the pandemic. The innovative efforts of the sector, in its commitment to more sustainable, efficient and customised solutions and technologies, focused on optimising the use of water and energy and improving the quality of life of users, will be reflected in the new products that will be showcased at the event. The most innovative and disruptive items can be seen in the Innovation Zone, a space that will be set up by the show and in which exhibitors will be able to highlight their best solutions. Energy savings and the reduction of water consumption, the impact of digitalisation and connectivity on pool maintenance, the importance of architectural design and the creation of healthy, leisure and wellness experiences are all trendsetting. For its part, the Wellness Experience, a fully operational wellness centre, will be reopened and will showcase the latest equipment, products and specific solutions for this type of establishment. Another highlight will be the ‘Outdoor Living Experience’, dedicated to the latest trends in outdoor design to convert the open-air area that usually surrounds swimming pools into a welcoming and relaxing space, dedicated to promoting wellness, health and sociability. Lastly, the show will hold a gala dinner bringing together the main actors in the industry and will be the setting for the Piscina & Wellness Barcelona Awards for the most sustainable and innovative products at the show, the Wellness Experience Awards for the best Iberian and European spas, spas and thalassotherapy centres, and the International Architecture Competition for students. All these awards project the values of innovation in the swimming pool sector, rounding off an edition that is shaping up to be one of the busiest and most representative of the Barcelona event. OPINION

No Diving. No Running. No Bombing. “Public swimming pools are under threat. Should we protect them? Can we protect them?” asks Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast

T

hose of you who know me will know that I am into fitness. Specifically, I’m a Crossfitter. Keeping up with the Crossfit program means that I go swimming once a week. As I’m one of more than 66 million people in the UK who don’t have access to their own private swimming pool, I swim in a public pool on a weekly basis. And I love it. We have a rich heritage of public swimming baths and it’s one that needs protecting for the good of people’s health, for the benefit of the community and yes, for the good of our industry.

DOGGY PADDLE The first public swimming baths date back to the 17th century but the bathing boom came in during the 1850s. If you picture life in Victorian England your imagination is almost bound to dredge up a few images of bathing beauties in modest swimming costumes and dandies in stripy shorts twirling their moustaches. The baths were a response to concerns about public health and hygiene and they gave people a safe place to learn to swim as well as to exercise and keep clean.

BUTTERFLY The Victorians recognised the fact that swimming was an activity that had benefits for everyone. Those muscle-bound strongmen in their knitted leotards certainly spent hours swimming lengths in the pool. Actually learning to swim became more and more important as the Victorians took to the rivers, canals and beaches in their droves. Public swimming pools served as social hubs bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and swimming was an activity that families could do together. Mental health was perhaps not the hot topic it is

today but the Victorians knew that municipal swimming pools offered a retreat from the daily stresses of life and contributed to improved mental wellbeing.

BREASTSTROKE All the health benefits that swimming can bring remain the same. The benefits of municipal pools haven’t changed, yet the public swimming pool in this country is an endangered species. England has lost almost 400 public swimming pools since 2010. Each closure has its own specific reasons but essentially it all comes down to money. As pools get older, they become more expensive to maintain. Maintenance budgets have been cut over the years and now what needs to be done, can’t afford to be done. Many public swimming pools operate at a loss, relying on subsidies from local governments to stay afloat and local government budgets are under pressure. The rise of private gyms and leisure centres with swimming pools has created competition for public facilities. All these things are made worse by the energy crisis.

BACKSTROKE There is still hope for public pools and swimming baths. In June this year the government launched an initiative called the Swimming Pool Support Fund. The fund provides a total of £60m to local authorities in England to support public leisure facilities with swimming pools. Phase 1 consists of £20m available to facilities with swimming pools where increased costs are leaving them vulnerable to closure. Basically, it’s money to keep them afloat in the short term. The second phase comes in the form of grants from a £40m pot for capital

investment to improve the energy efficiency of public pools in the medium to long term. The second phase of the Swimming Pool Support Fund opened in August to applications from local authorities.

SIDESTROKE Our industry has been looking to be more eco-friendly for many years but the energy crisis has focused everyone’s attention on spiralling energy costs and how to minimise their impact. Technology that was originally designed for private pools can work just as well in public ones. Heat pumps, automation systems and energy efficient pumps that are specified for new builds can often be retro fitted to make an existing pool more efficient. We have exactly the knowledge, products and technology that these public pools and baths are looking for.

FRONT CRAWL Public swimming pools and swimming baths have been an essential part of British culture for generations. Their historical significance highlights their importance in promoting health and wellbeing. They have been around for a long time because they work, they make a difference to public health and community spirit. The future of public swimming pools and swimming baths in the UK depends on grant funding, community engagement, and a commitment to their preservation. It also depends on lowering their energy costs, on making the pools more attractive and more efficient. If we get that right these cultural gems can continue to thrive, providing safe, accessible and enjoyable spaces for generations to come. Ensuring the tradition of public swimming remaining a cherished part of British life. I know, I’ve got my towel and my Speedos packed and I’m looking forward to next week’s lengths down the pool. Long may it be there! Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
