situation. We explore what’s new in the aboveground pools market, a sector that’s come into its own over recent weeks. The lockdown combined with hot weather, holiday uncertainty and home schooling has created the ideal environment for these products. We’ve also a feature on high-end hot tubs which have also seen an increase in their interest for the same reasons as home pools.

‘Strange times’ and ‘stay safe’ are phrases that I’ve heard so often now, they will define this year for me. Of course, these are extremely strange times indeed and staying safe, well and healthy is clearly the priority for all, but for many businesses, including for us here at SPN, we’re expected to carry on operating normally, or as close to it as possible. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has ensured such a range of situations for both individuals and businesses, that’s a task which is easier said than done and I’ve temporarily retired the phrase ‘business as usual’ as currently there appears to be no such thing. Thankfully though, with the lockdown easing, that may be changing and we seem to be slowly nearing the end of what I believe is just the first phase of this pandemic. For the wet leisure sector, it seems like it has been mainly an industry of two halves since the outbreak. For operators in the commercial sector (who still remain closed at the time of writing), the pressure is mounting to open up facilities which have been out of bounds for months now. However, on the domestic side, it couldn’t have been a busier period and many retailers and installers have been flat out with interest in most garden-based products, including of course hot tubs, swim spas and swimming pools, going through the roof. With events changing so quickly, how long either of these scenarios will last remains to be seen but I am thankful that ours is an industry that has not been crippled like many others. Concentrating on this edition, we’ve a number of features that are topical given the current

Fabulous and hardwearing tiling and mosaic solutions have the spotlight placed upon them again this issue as we look at the latest trends plus we also take a look at the products and companies that are manufacturing some fantastic pool products, right here in the UK. We take an in depth look at the various options for heating swimming pool water with a focus on solutions which aren’t heat pump related, but they’ll definitely take the chill out of a variety of pools – particularly useful given the increase in domestic swimming pool sales. Trade events, both in the UK and around the world have been under pressure due to the COVID-19 outbreak but many towards the end of the year are hopefully unaffected so we round up what’s on and where over the next 12 months. And as if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams provides his view on the pandemic – a piece which was penned in May, which is interesting to read now as events have moved on so quickly since then plus, in response to the outbreak, there’s a piece on virtual training for pool plant qualifications from Luke Griffiths at Safety Training Awards. There’s also useful design information regarding ‘Later Living’ developments plus further information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA. Plus, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So, that’s this latest issue of SPN broken down – as ever, I hope you enjoy reading it. Stay safe in these strange times!

Lights And Luxury In Pool Room Of Britain’s Most Expensive Home High-end domestic pool contractor Whitewaters was recently part of the one of the most high-profile residential pool installations the country has ever seen. The luxury renovation was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary Britain’s Most Expensive Home, which followed the £65m refurbishment of Ancaster House in London. Whitewaters was responsible for fitting the pool and various aspects of an adjoining spa area. As part of the project, they partnered with wet leisure industry distributor Golden Coast to provide 12 Q2 EVA Optic LED underwater lights for the pool. “It was a high-value job that required high-spec lights. EVA Optic underwater lights have a nice clean finish and were a great product to work with. They were easy to fit and straightforward when it came to connecting up the electrics,” said Mick Guthrie, Director at Whitewaters. EVA Optic LED underwater lights illuminate areas of up to 10m2 and at only 10 Watts offer a light output of 6,500K. The multi-angle beam combines powerful light and even illumination to the bottom of the pool. Mitchel Percy of Technical Sales at Golden Coast said: “EVA lights have a proven track record of providing outstanding quality, reliability and efficiency, and the Q2 lights were ideal for a residential installation of this calibre. EVA Optic uses the latest in LED technology to ensure long

touch screen control panel for the lights and automatic sprinkler in the spa. Mick Guthrie concluded: “We knew we could rely on Golden Coast as we have worked with them for years. They have always been really flexible and helpful. They make things happen when you need them to, which was particularly important for a project of this significance.” lifespans and minimal maintenance, which makes taking care of a pool much easier for the customer.” Golden Coast also provided a bespoke DMX

Online Pool Plant Operations Programme Now Live Safety Training Awards (the awarding organisation of the STA) have launched an industry first for a regulated pool plant operations qualification with their e-learning programme which gives learners the option to revalidate or convert to STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification from an acceptable equivalent. The programme provides qualified pool plant operators with an alternative to face-to-face courses, saving both time and money – and it serves to positively help those learners who have issues with course accessibility. Learners will receive the latest version of STA’s pool plant operations resource e-manual, containing the information required to maintain and operate a pool, spa and interactive water feature plant, as well as editable revision packs. This distance learning programme is ideal for self-motivated pool plant operators capable of

studying on their own. The programme itself informs learners of the course requirements, provides access to the course resources and information on how to book the online Multiple-Choice (MCQ) assessment. The online assessment gives learners the flexibility to complete the assessment at a time to fit around their busy lives. The results are processed automatically and submitted to learners within 48 hours. The length of the course is approximately six hours (but will vary based on the knowledge, understanding and occupational competence of the learner) and the qualification is valid for five years. IN BRIEF ‘RETURN TO POOLS GUIDANCE’ DOCUMENTS FROM SWIM ENGLAND Swim England has published its comprehensive ‘Return to Pools Guidance’ ahead of the Government easing the current lockdown measures. Five detailed documents have been created and are based on the latest scientific advice and Government guidelines. The guidance includes robust recommendations for operators, casual swimmers, lane swimming, family-fun sessions, club activity, teachers and those attending swimming lessons. Available as downloads on the Swim England website (www.swimming.org) each document contain links and advice for returning to pools.

SUPPORT THE #OPENOURPOOLS CAMPAIGN Swim England is calling on its members, clubs, coaches, teachers, swim schools, swimmers and facility operators to back its #OpenOurPools campaign. Chief Executive Jane Nickerson has said millions of people are being let down by the Government’s decision not to allow pools to reopen on 4 July. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is being urged to reopen facilities up and down the country as soon as possible. A petition has been set up to support the cause and pledges on social media are also encouraged.

‘EVERYDAYCATION’ HITS THE AIRWAVES In late June, PIP (Pool Industry Promotions) kick-started their PR campaign to get everyone talking about ‘everydaycation’ and the message was spread over the airwaves with BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes being interviewed live on several BBC radio programmes. Chris was invited to discuss the surging demand for hot tubs and swimming pools during lockdown. This provided a fantastic opportunity to promote the everydaycation message, products and price ranges, dispel some myths, and promote BISHTA and SPATA too.

Devin Consulting Involved With London’s Newest Neighbourhood Recently, property developers Ballymore joined with Oxley Holdings Ltd to create a new neighbourhood along the banks of the Thames, close to Canary Wharf in London. Royal Wharf is 40 acres of riverside real estate and will be home to 3,300 residences as well as retail and business space. A large percentage of the land is designated open space to include a riverside park linking the Royal Wharf Pier, Royal Wharf Amphitheatre and Riverside Walk. The Clubhouse is a key element of the neighbourhood

and Devin Consulting was delighted to be part of the design team to deliver the pool and spa which was completed last year. The Clubhouse at Royal Wharf is a residents’ only Health Club, offering the latest state-of-the-art gym equipment. The club includes a 25m indoor swimming pool with space for poolside relaxation loungers. The glazed front sauna and steam cabins open out to the hydrotherapy spa pool with massaging water features, and experience showers are provided close by. Devin’s role was the design and specification of the pool water treatment systems, heat experience cabins and reinforced concrete pool tanks. The company also provided construction phase specialist technical support to the client and the principal contractor’s team through subcontractor design portion verification, site monitoring and reporting, plus commissioning validation. Popular PWTAG Updates Provide Guidance On Reopening Pools Like everyone, PWTAG has had a turbulent and challenging few months. Swimming pools were an early casualty of the COVID19 pandemic, and PWTAG has been busy deliberating and providing guidance throughout. By the time SPN lands, there may be a government decision on reopening or pools may even be open again. In any case PWTAG’s most recent guidance will be important to pool managers and operators. In March, the government ordered the closure of leisure centres and gyms (along with cafés, pubs, restaurants, cinemas etc). Within days PWTAG published on pwtag.org a technical note (TN43) about how to temporarily close a pool. It covered the two options: reducing circulation with daily monitoring of disinfectant

etc; the other, switching off, superchlorinating and switching on and monitoring once a week. May saw two more PWTAG technical notes. TN44 gave details about disinfecting coronavirus – how it spreads and how it’s killed (including the importance of detergents), and specifically how to render safe pool buildings. TN45 started dealing with reopening: a stepby step guide to the careful processes that would restore the pool for a safe return to swimming. That is clearly very relevant now that the government seems poised to allow leisure centres to reopen. Unsurprisingly, there has

been a lot of discussion about how to do so safely in an era of social distancing. Changing rooms are an issue – and of course the pool itself. Now TN46 takes operators through what they need to manage pools safely while the pandemic hopefully subsides. The principles behind hydraulics, disinfection, filtration etc haven’t changed, but some of the practices have been sharpened. To be safe from the Coronavirus, low pH and a slightly higher range of chlorine residual are recommended. And there is some new emphasis on types of disinfectant, caution about aerosols and advice about pre-swim showering too. PWTAG 01509 640730 www.pwtag.org

IN BRIEF CONSUMER MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES REVISED DATES New dates for What Pool & Hot Tub – the consumer magazine published by the same team that produces SPN – have been announced for the 2020/21 edition. With the COVID-19 crisis affecting the industry and causing numerous delays, the annual title is now scheduled to be available at the end of August. Covering a wide range of domestic wet leisure products, What Pool & Hot Tub is the only product of it’s type available in the UK and it was felt that despite domestic company’s benefitting from increased consumer demand during the lockdown, it was still essential to produce the informative title.

PERMISSION GRANTED FOR £150M SUBTERRANEAN WELLBEING HUB Westminster City Council has approved Reef Group’s plans to invest over £150m in Cavendish Square, transforming the space into a subterranean mixeduse destination, with a focus on wellbeing and health. The project was approved via a virtual planning committee, in what is believed to be its first major online application approval. The four storey project will deliver specialist facilities for the capital’s private healthcare sector and is believed to be London’s first subterranean destination for the sector. Stewart Deering, joint Chief Executive of Reef Group said: “Reef Group has worked closely with Westminster City Council to design an iconic destination for London and we’re delighted to have secured planning consent for the scheme. “The scheme is designed with flexibility in mind and we’re talking to occupiers from a variety of sectors. The health and wellbeing industry is predicted to grow substantially and Cavendish Square London is well placed to respond to this trend.”

Veolia CHP Delivers Energy Savings For Total Fitness Leading resource management company Veolia, is now helping Total Fitness achieve a 32% reduction in gas consumption using combined heat and power, CHP, across 17 health and fitness facilities in the north of England and Wales. The new 15 year contract will install the latest technology to achieve a 22% increase in electrical efficiency compared to the existing CHP units, lower energy costs and further reduce CO2 emissions from the 134,000m2 of building space. As a leading operator of health, fitness, rehabilitation and aquatic facilities, Total Fitness operate 17 Health Clubs within the UK, advising over 100,000 members on their health and wellbeing. The companies continual commitment to drive down energy consumption, utility costs and further reductions in carbon emissions, is one of the key

drivers of the company’s business strategy. Under the new contract each of the centres will benefit from new co-generation plants that efficiently generate electricity and heat from a single fuel source to cover their energy demands. Each on site plant provides electricity and heat for the whole building, gyms, pools, showers, saunas, steam rooms, sanariums and domestic hot water. To match the locations’ base electrical and thermal loadings the plants are individually sized, ranging from 140kWe to 250kWe and will take the total co-generation capacity

across all the sites to 3.17MWe – equivalent to the power demand from 8,400 homes. The contract covers a fully engineered package covering installation and operation of the CHP units that will take pressure off the local electricity infrastructure and provide stable energy costs that are less susceptible to energy market price changes. Also included in the contract is a 15 year operation and maintenance service. Veolia 020 3567 7655 www.veolia.co.uk

Lockdown Doesn’t Stop Project Appointments For Devin Consulting It is business as usual at Devin Consulting with several new appointments over recent weeks during the lockdown. There are some exciting projects in the pipeline – however, the company can’t say too much about all of them at the moment but there is a fantastic spread of features and complexities that make full use of all Devin’s expertise. The company are thrilled to be part of the design team to deliver a new ride to one of Center Parcs’ UK villages. It’s the same team that delivered Center Parcs’ newest village in Longford, Ireland – Edmond Shipway as project managers and architects Holder Mathias – and the Devin team are absolutely delighted to be working with them again. The Cyclone is an incredibly popular ride at a number of Center Parcs sites in the UK and it is not for the fainthearted. It is a four person raft ride with 125 metres of twists, turns and gravitydefying drops

– definitely one of the most exciting rides at the resorts. Bankside Yard Arches is a new mixed-use development next to Blackfriars Bridge in London and Devin will be working with Gardiner & Theobald who are project managing this phase of the development on behalf of the client, Native Land. This stunning development will include residential, commercial and leisure elements. Another exciting project which takes the North Shields-based company a little further afield is located in Saudi Arabia where they will be working with French architects and British engineers to design and deliver a new hyper luxury resort. After much investigation, planning and discussion, Devin re-started site visits back in May to conduct progress inspections on behalf of their clients as it was clear that the construction economy was moving forward again. Serco Leisure Reopens AquaSplash Facility Following Lockdown Ease

Operator Serco Leisure has reopened its AquaSplash facility on the Channel Island of Jersey, the first of its indoor sites to reopen following the closure of all leisure facilities in the UK back in March. The decision to reopen the swimming centre was taken following the Jersey Government’s announcement that the island had moved to Level Two of Coronavirus lockdown, which allows for certain businesses to reopen as long as they are able to maintain social distancing rules safely. AquaSplash is operating with new measures in place, which include the splitting of the pool into three wider lanes to allow for more distance between swimmers, changing rooms, showers and lockers not being in use and the sauna and steam rooms staying closed. Simon Bailey, Managing Director of Serco Leisure said: “A lot of work has gone into the re-opening plans for the AquaSplash. We’ve ensured we’re able to offer a safe place to visit for customers and a safe place to work for our colleagues on the island.

Essex Council Still Committed To Pitsea Pool Plans

“We recently successfully reopened our golf centres in Basingstoke and at Beacon Park in West Lancashire, but an indoor facility brings its own challenges. However, since we welcomed back our first customers this week, it’s clear that they and our colleagues are adapting well to this new way of operating.” Faye Camp, Contract Manager at the centre said: “People were desperate for us to re-open and I can honestly say, it’s great to be back. We’ve had a good number of swimmers each day in the pool, about average for the time of year actually. And we’re even making new membership sales, which shows that customers are confident they feel our health and safety processes are robust during this challenging period.” Serco Leisure operates AquaSplash on behalf of the Jersey Government and it is Jersey’s premier aquatics venue, attracting around 200,000 visits a year.

A leading councillor has spoken of Basildon Council’s commitment on proposals to build a swimming pool in Pitsea in Essex. Vice Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee and ward councillor for Pitsea South East, Councillor Andrew Ansell, said the council remains “absolutely committed” to progressing with proposals for the development of a swimming pool in Pitsea at the Eversley Leisure Centre site which is operated by Everyone Active. The project is currently paused as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Before the crisis unfolded in March the next decision for the committee was to tender for the design and build based on financial projections presented to committee. Cllr Ansell said: “We are absolutely committed to moving forward with proposals for a pool in Pitsea and have already completed a public consultation and found a viable site at Eversley. The budget for the development of this also remains in place. “To progress with proposals, officers need to call upon the expertise of our leisure operator. The Coronavirus pandemic has halted this part of the project but work will continue as soon as possible. “There is significant work being undertaken by leisure governing bodies and the government regarding how leisure centres will reopen with the current restrictions and what impact that will have on the short to medium term on financial viability of leisure centres across the country. “Once we have a clearer understanding of the potential impact on our leisure provision, a report will be brought back to committee.”

Approval Given To Brean Splash Waterpark’s Expansion Proposal Plans revealed in January for four new rides at Brean Splash Waterpark have been given the go-ahead by Sedgemoor District Council on the condition that construction should not start until a traffic management plan is submitted and approved. A five-year development plan details announced in the planning application to extend the facilities which include a new outdoor ‘feature pool’ and new water rides. These include a Wave rider that can be used by two people at the same time; a ‘Space bowl’ that is described as a “high thrill water ride”, a new ‘Multislide’ that is aimed at families and multiple users at the same time plus a new ‘Water Play’ section aimed at all ages.

10 June 2020 SPN 10+12_SPN_June_20_News_General.indd 10

A new outdoor pool is also in the proposals that will include a ‘Wave ball’ pool with a beach and small waves. The proposals are part of plans to extend the existing Brean Splash Waterpark also to provide additional changing space and improve its overall facilities. Speaking before the approval, Sarah House, Director said: “The design of the building is a simple extension, sited to enable the existing entrance to be

maintained and changing rooms to be extended. This allows for a larger shop area and more space for internal seating for the existing cafe. “A better changing room arrangement will allow for closing off sections at peak times to allow for cleaning whilst still providing sufficient changing space. “A ‘changing places’ accessible changing room is provided along with additional easily accessible disabled changing rooms and toilets. The building is capable of being separated into zones which will enable it to be operated efficiently depending upon the demand.” The expansion would see the creation of an additional 15-20 new jobs for the local area.

Plans for a new state-of-the art £21m leisure centre and community hub have been given a seal of approval at Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee, paving the way for an Autumn 2020 start date. Due to the Coronavirus situation, the meeting was held virtually with the views from members of the public read to councillors. It was streamed on the council’s YouTube channel. The new complex will be run by Active Northumberland, the charitable trust that manages leisure services across the county. Contractors will now be appointed to carry out the building work which is expected to be completed by spring 2022. The centre will include a six-lane swimming pool with spectator gallery, a learner pool, spa facilities plus numerous other non-wet leisure facilities along with a new community services hub. Mark Warnes, interim Chief Executive of Active Northumberland said: “It’s great that such rapid progress has been made in designing and developing the new centre and that the green light has now been given to start building it. The new centre will be a real asset for the town and a wonderful place, with great facilities, for residents and visitors to enjoy for many years to come.” Advance Northumberland, the regeneration company established by Northumberland County Council, is responsible for delivering the project. The centre has been designed by GT3 Architects. The funding for the centre has been financed by Northumberland County Council as part of an ambitious £65m countywide investment programme to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities and to enhance the customer experience. This includes the building of new leisure centres in Berwick and Ponteland and major investment to refurbish and revitalise centres in Blyth and Hexham.

NIVEKO Reveal New Marketing Materials Including A New Website Pool manufacturer NIVEKO has recently completed a complete redesign of the company’s main presentation channels, i.e. its website and printed catalogues. The entire concept is based on the theme of water and the feelings associated with a pool, such as a bubble motif that runs through all these communication elements. Another feature is the clear emphasis on the visual presentation of the company’s pools and an effort to make them stand out as much as possible within each medium. On the website, an obvious effort has been made to show visitors the wide range of options that NIVEKO offer. The best place to admire these is in the ‘References’ section. The

broad portfolio of professionally photographed projects is ideal for clients who are interested in the individual requirements of a custommade pool. If visitors like what they see, choosing that pool is just a click away as under each project, there is quick access to NIVEKO’s nPooL Planner. This simple and clear tool allows visitors to quickly choose the type of pool required, including the colour and type of steps. The query is then handled by NIVEKO. Offline, the NIVEKO catalogue intended for end users follows the same branding style as the website, giving customers a detailed overview. Inside, NIVEKO’s

pool types are presented primarily through photos, providing details on different styles, plus how they look in situ. After type, colour is the second point that customers are most interested in, and the catalogue presents the available schemes, including examples of real installations along with the types of available pool steps plus other associated information. The technical catalogue, designed to make things easier for NIVEKO’s partners, was created with an emphasis on efficiency and practical use. It’s a comprehensive means of presenting all aspects and options of NIVEKO’s pools. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Celebrating 75 Years Of Pioneering Together Grundfos marked its anniversary by celebrating a commitment through generations to strong values, creating a better future and making an impact by pioneering together. From the very first pump in 1945 to today’s digital solutions, Grundfos has been synonymous with a pioneering spirit, social awareness and innovative solutions. The 75th anniversary was dedicated to the shared values of the company’s 19,280 colleagues all over the world. The official anniversary date was 12 May, and employees celebrated in their local teams. For many, this took take place digitally, as a number of employees were working from home due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite that, it was an occasion to reflect on the past, present and future.

“Thanks to our talented and diverse global team, we continue to push forward with a constant eye on pioneering solutions that shape our entire industry and beyond,” said Mads Nipper, Group President & CEO of Grundfos. The pump company’s history began at the end of the Second World War, when Grundfos founder and engineer Poul Due Jensen was asked by a local farmer if he could procure a pump. However, there was a shortage of

almost everything, so he had to develop and construct a complete quality water supply from scratch. The solution proved a great success and, as history shows, the foundation of the organisation we know today. Besides being an innovative spirit, Poul Due Jensen was very conscious of collaboration and made Grundfos an inclusive workplace, stating that everyone has the power to contribute. ”If you’re on your own you can do a little, but you can do a lot when you work together to do the job,” he said, crediting employees as a key element to the results created. Lutz Battery Driven Chemical Transfer Pumps Eliminate Cables When it comes to transferring sodium hypochlorite or acids from carboys to day tanks, traditionally, manually operated hand transfer pumps are employed and this takes time and is also tiring. Lutz have a more efficient solution though and their new B1 and B2 battery operated chemical transfer pumps are lightweight, portable, eliminate cables and with flow rates from 20l/min (B1) to 65l/min (B2) offer a much quicker transfer option. The B1 with a 10.8V battery can transfer 400L on a single charge at maximum flow, while the more powerful B2 with a 21.6V battery can transfer 2,400L using replaceable, highperformance Li-Ion technology. Pump tubes are available in PP, PVDF or 316SS in 500mm, 700 and 1,000mm lengths to cater for differing container types. The drive unit uses a new BLDC motor with a high level of efficiency up to 70%, high battery life and service life, low weight, low noise ≤70 dBA and are infinitely varied. The drive unit is easily and safely detached from the pump tube with a quick action coupling. The battery motor B1 Battery with a performance of 75 Watt is suitable for small to medium filling quantities and a low viscosity <200 mPas and low density <1.2 kg / dm3. The powerful 260 Watt B2 Battery Motor is designed for medium to large filling quantities. Due to the extremely high performance with low Marine 1 weight, higher viscosities > 200 mPas, higher pressures/ flow rates and higher densities >1.2 kg / dm3 can be achieved. Marmox Thermoblock Combats Cold Bridging Issues The construction of a new swimming pool and play park at Clayton Caravan Park in Fife is making full use of the unique insulating and loadcarrying attributes offered by Marmox Thermoblocks. With its fully enclosed and well insulated steel framed structure, the new pool and park will offer year round enjoyment for guests and the wider public. A key element to the new facility’s energy saving design is preventing cold-bridging occurring around the perimeter to the building’s in-situ reinforced concrete floor where it meets the external walls. One hundred and forty millimetre wide Thermoblock units were installed around the inner leaf of the building, while 100mm units formed part of the perimeter wall to the pool. Marmox MSP 360 sealant was also used as an adhesive to complete the stepped overlay joints between the individual Thermoblock units. Available in widths of 100, 140 or 215mm, Thermoblocks are formed from sections of XPS (extruded polystyrene) encapsulating two rows of high strength, epoxy concrete mini-columns. These are attached

at either end to the top and bottom layers of glass-fibre reinforced polymer concrete, to ensure a good bond with the rest of the structure. Crucially, a variety of details have been thermally modelled by the BRE to provide insulation values for use in SAP or other calculations avoiding the punishing ‘default’ figure. Project Architect Joe Narsapur of Montgomery Forgan Associates explained: “We have been specifying Thermoblock for probably five years now in response to being asked to detail cold-bridging solutions where it is required by Building Standards, councils in particular are asking for it. “Thermoblock was the first product we became aware of that offers the high load-carrying capabilities through the incorporation of miniature concrete columns within an insulation. I think it will get used more and more in the future.” Marmox UK Ltd 01634 835290 www.marmox.co.uk

HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS

Simple Spa Cabinet Restoration Solutions

Hot Tub Company Shoots Past Predicted Sales Targets Like many hot tub retailers around the UK, spa retailer UK Leisure Living smashed its previous sales records recently as warm weather coupled with the Coronavirus lockdown led to a surge in purchases. Following the busy period, Managing Director Gareth Jones is encouraging people to support local firms when restrictions are lifted as the hospitality and tourism industry in particular will take a long time to recover from the impact of the pandemic. The St Asaph and Mochdre-based business was 70% up on sales in comparison to the previous April, and May has been the busiest ever for the company. Having opened a new swim spa centre just weeks before the pandemic struck the UK, Gareth said they are fortunate the hot tubs sector has received a positive response but is concerned for other local organisations. “The weather has certainly helped

us, and the fact we work with different brands and suppliers means we have a steady flow of hot tubs coming into the warehouse and going out to customers,” he said back in May. “We are applying social distancing laws when installing and to be honest it’s like any other mail order process, we’re just there slightly longer.” With uncertainty and people cancelling summer holidays abroad to stay in the UK and at home, the trend is likely to continue in the months ahead. “For most of us we are going to be in the UK enjoying the garden this summer, so if having a hot tub makes them happy during a ‘staycation’ then that can only be a good thing,” said Gareth, whose company was listed in the top five businesses in North Wales and 21st in Wales at the Fast Growth 50 Awards.

The new Restor-A-Spa kit from Certikin is an inexpensive way to replace tired looking spa and hot tub cabinets that have seen better days. Made of material that is resilient to the elements and UV deterioration, the kit comes with easy to follow instructions making it a quick and easy way to rejuvenate weathered or unattractive cabinets to give the appearance of a new spa and many more enjoyable years of ownership. The kit includes four panels and four corners to cover spas up to 2.4m square (8’) which can then be cut to size. Suitable for replacing the skirting around nearly any spa that has a radius corner. The panels are built to last and come with a five-year manufacturing warranty. An even more cost-effective way to update spa cabinets, is Certikin’s new flexible spa panel kit. Like Restor-A-Spa, the kit is available in three popular colours – black, espresso and deep grey. The roll of replacement panels are easily installed by cutting to height and then wrapping around the existing framework of any 8’ x 8’ or less spa or hot tub. The kit also includes colour co-ordinated fixings and in some instances the old cabinet may not need to be removed before applying the flexible spa panel. IN BRIEF PENTAIR EARNS 2020 ENERGY STAR® AWARD Pentair has announced it has received the 2020 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award for continued leadership and superior contributions to ENERGY STAR. This honour marks the seventh year that Pentair has garnered recognition for its continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements. “Pentair is committed to bringing innovative products and solutions to our customers. Our high-performing variable speed pool pumps help conserve energy resources and reduce energy costs, allowing pool owners to simply concentrate on enjoying their pool. We are proud to be recognised as an ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for seven consecutive years,” said De’Mon Wiggins, Vice President of Pentair Pool. “More than a decade ago, Pentair introduced variable speed technology to the pool industry. Today, we remain equally dedicated to delivering smart, sustainable water solutions.”

The Everyday Meets The Exceptional At Canadian Aquatics Facility Beloeil in Quebec, Canada is defined by the dramatic cliffs of Mont Saint-Hilaire, the Richelieu River and picturesque agricultural lands, and the city’s new aquatics centre from architectural practice Lemay offers a strong design response to this unique environment. The company’s vision for the modern centre proves that thoughtful design can elevate projects with modest budgets and integrate them with the most rural landscapes. “Our goal was to maximise delicate and nuanced design strategies to make the most of this community-building opportunity,” said Lemay’s Pierre Leclerc. A luminous, translucent glass box on a black base comprises the building’s simple massing of two distinct and complementary geometric forms, its elements echoing the meeting of sky, water and plain. Smooth and shiny by day, at night the light box reveals the depth of its structure and the nature of the activity taking place inside. By the simplicity of its form

and construction, the project reflects the duality of everyday and exceptional: the geometric encounter between opacity and transparency, the darkness of the base and the lightness of the water bodies offer rich vibrations of textures and variations on architectural form. These formal variations are revealed from a distance and in the approach to the building through the rhythms of pedestrians, cyclists or motorists. “The project’s design-build approach and cost constraints created a challenging context

T&A CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Waterco Bolsters Business By Acquiring AutoPool

Technics & Applications (T&A), the Belgium-based automatic cover manufacturer, are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Established in 1995 by Ludo Vervoort, under the leadership of Managing Director Joeri Dils, the company has prospered and enjoyed significant growth in 2019, resulting in it becoming one of the leading manufacturers of automatic pool covers in Europe. Situated in the North of Belgium, T&A produces 4,000 covers per year distributed in more than 20 different countries. T&A produces high quality made-to-measure products using only high-end raw materials and sub-assemblies. The company controls the production process from start to finish, therefore ensuring it is possible to supply a high quality and stable product time after time.

International water treatment and swimming pool equipment manufacturer, Waterco Ltd, has acquired Automated Pool Products Pty Ltd (AutoPool) in Australia. The move bolsters Waterco’s extensive range of filtration, sanitisation and heating equipment while consolidating its position as one of the industry’s last remaining Australian-owned and operated companies. “Purchasing APP, or AutoPool as it’s known, is part of our strategy to strengthen Waterco’s market share,” said CEO and Chairman, Soon Sinn Goh. “AutoPool’s established brand name, excellent market reputation and digital transformation will enable us to offer comprehensive pool and spa solutions to customers throughout Australia and globally.” AutoPool owner and general manager Grant Craig will continue working for the company. Waterco Group Marketing Director Bryan Goh describes Waterco and AutoPool as “complementary companies”. “Both have a strong presence in a number of markets we’re not involved in; a big presence in WA and a significant presence in Queensland,” he said.

for excellence, but we ultimately succeeded in creating an integrated presence that echoes a contrasting environment,” said Andrew King, Partner and Design Principal at Lemay. The interiors are flooded with light and the southeast façade is directly in line with the axis of Mont Saint-Hilaire, so that users can swim, bathe or slide while maintaining contact with the mountain.

“Clearly, it’s great that they’ve got the official distributorship of Kreepy Krauly, but that wasn’t the prime driver of our acquisition. When we looked at AutoPool, we didn’t regard them as competitors but rather a new revenue stream. That’s why we’re keeping the AutoPool business as is; we’re retaining the name and the owner Grant has stayed on. It’s business as usual.” Goh advised that over time, they’ll explore other synergies, including utilising their existing access to markets in Europe and North America. Grant Craig said it is pleasing that AutoPool will continue as normal. “We will maintain our existing locations with our existing team of professional staff. It is an exciting time for AutoPool to merge with Waterco and we look forward to continuing to provide the highquality products and service we have become known for.” Craig added he was looking for a partner to work with, and Waterco ticked all the right boxes.

Lapitec Chosen For Hidden Manhattan Oasis

Studio Apostoli Signs Off On Stunning Interior Design The Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti is a complex that seems to emerge from the woods and blends perfectly into the landscape in which it is located. It reinterprets the traditional architecture of the area and in line with the philosophy of its owners, rediscovers the recurring elements of mountain buildings. Multi-disciplinary design company Studio Apostoli developed the entire interior design scheme for the prestigious 5-star Resort recently inaugurated in Pinzol, a ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio in northern Italy. Studio Apostoli laid the foundations for the interior design concept – a design idea that, in accordance with the client’s wishes, communicates precise values, including Italian lifestyle, contemporary luxury and environmental and energy sustainability. Set in the surrounding mountains,

the structure is on nine levels – four dedicated to private residences and five to hotel accommodation. The large entrance lobby with lounge, reading room, outdoor Sky Lounge, meeting areas, indoor shops and two restaurants make up the large common areas, however the real heart of the resort would undoubtedly be that of the SPA. Covering about 5,000 square metres, the wellness area is spread over several floors, differentiated at a functional level: an entire floor dedicated to treatments, the in and out swimming pool with family sauna, the Lefay SPA Method energy-therapeutic paths and the large fitness area. Natural oak parquet, light-coloured leather upholstery and walls in natural granite stone make up the material palette. Ivory or dark stone is used to define the various zones of the wellness area, overlooking the surrounding Dolomite landscape through large windows.

There are secret places in the heart of New York where you can find refuge from the bustle of the metropolis. One such example is this swimming pool – tucked away in the basement of one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan – where a harmonious space has been created for users to stop the clock and recharge their batteries. Designed with essential lines and pure geometrical balance, the space is emphasised by artificial lighting and intersected by the effect of the water itself and the wooden wall cladding, which creates a clear contrast with the slabs of Bianco Polare Lapitec that have been used. Sintered stone covers almost all of the surfaces, in fact, it’s featured in different textures and formats, embodying the material’s aesthetic qualities and technical features. Large-format slabs of Lapitec Bianco Polare in the Vesuvius finish surround the long rectangular pool and climb the walls; small, rectangular tiles are used on the base of the columns and within the shower area, where Lapitec also supplied the bespoke interior floor plate. The Satin finish was used for the interior of the pool, while the Lux polished version covers the stairs leading to the upper floor, to great luminous effect. In contact with the water, and also below it, Lapitec expresses its ideal features: due to its composition, which renders the surface free of pores, the sintered stone does not absorb liquids, does not allow mould to form and is non-slip and easy to clean. Lapitec is also resistant to surface damage such as scratches, abrasions or chromatic alterations due to time and intense wear, all fundamental properties for a public space such as a swimming pool. NIVEKO Provides A Private Paradise In The Swiss Countryside Near the Swiss town of Baden, in the municipality of Lupfig, there is an oasis of peace and quiet, which is home to the Silvestri family. Until recently, the one thing missing from this idyllic setting was a swimming pool, but thanks to NIVEKO, this final piece for the perfect lifestyle has now been provided. “We like living in the countryside,” said Mr Silvestri. “For us, our pool is like having our own private stretch of lake or sea in our own garden. The water and the sun reflecting off the surface are soothing and encourage us to stop for a while and take a break from the hustle and bustle of life.” As the property was already built, the family was somewhat limited with regards to the pool design. “We had not heard of NIVEKO before this, but our friend and neighbours had also had a NIVEKO pool installed and are very happy with it. So, we took inspiration from publications as well as from our friends. However, the process

26 June 2020 SPN 25+26_SPN_June_20_World_News.indd 26

took some time – we spent two years planning, thinking up designs, then expanding on them or rejecting them,” explained Mr Silvestri. “The overall design of our garden also played a major role. The pool, house and garden had to match each other perfectly and share a consistent theme in terms of material, shape and colour. So, various different zones were created with the pool – these being the pool itself, 1.43 m deep, then a bench to sit on, which is really more a designer accessory. The distinctive and broad shallow end is a wet playground for the children, but is also intended to optically soften the transition between the terrace and the pool. The individuality of the shape and colour of the design, as well as the precision craftsmanship and quality – these were the main criteria for us when choosing a manufacturer.” NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Sad News During A Difficult Time With Coronavirus dominating both the headlines and the day-to-day operations of many businesses, Chris Hayes provides his latest industry update

W

hat an incredible and sobering year we have witnessed so far. With COVID-19 wreaking havoc around the World, the UK has been adversely affected more than most, with deaths from this disease. It is always more shocking when it happens to family or friends, and our industry has witnessed people gravely ill and sadly, there have also been some fatalities. To the families and friends of everyone who has died, I extend my sympathy to you for your loss. I would like to make special mention of Steve Franks (CEO at Water Babies) who was one of the people who has died from COVID-19. I had the pleasure of knowing Steve, first in his role with STA and then again when he took on his role at Water Babies. He was a keen and passionate advocate for our industry and firmly believed in the importance of education. He was especially keen to support children develop to their full potential. He set up, in partnership with a broad array of others, The Children First Alliance, which he launched in the Houses of Parliament last year. The Alliance is in its infancy but if anyone would like to support Steve’s legacy, his wife Alison would very much welcome your donation. As The Children First Alliance’s bank account is partway through being opened, Paul Thompson at Water Babies

has offered to pass on any monies donated to The Children First Alliance. The Water Babies bank account details are: Account name: WBX Limited; No.: 06348041; Sort Code 18-00-02. I would also like to mention Allen Wilson, who has also recently died (but not from COVID-19). Over many years, Allen would correspond with me on industry matters and during his time as ISPE President, I got to know Allen very well, as we prepared for the Gala Dinner and the awards part of the evening. He was extremely knowledgeable and his wry sense of humour will be sadly missed and our thoughts are also with Allen’s wife Sandra. COVID-19 has brought about changes to the way we work and how we interact with our wider family and friends. Working from home and having online meetings has increased exponentially. Working online has been second nature to the BISHTA and SPATA committees, who have been busy supporting members. In her article following this page, Sallie Leslie-Golding has also outlined how the industry is moving forward together with BISHTA and SPATA using their respective websites, not only for members but to the wider industry. I would like to add my personal thanks to Alex Kemsley for the donation of an infographic that we have put on the website about COVID-19 and our thanks again to our friends at The Arboricultural Association for the use of their original material. Although a number of face-to-face training opportunities have been postponed, to help members, a series of webinars have been hosted live by BISHTA and SPATA. Thanks

also to Nick Clamp, amongst others, for putting on some other webinars, providing much-needed assistance to the industry. The incredible weather that we have been experiencing in most parts of the British Isles for the past few months has been some compensation and has certainly helped drive demand for many of our products and services. With gardens becoming the centre of attention for so many of us with access to one, there will be increased demand for garden improvements, and we will be ready to provide those products. We have seen huge pent up demand, with sales of items such as inflatable spas meaning that a whole new generation of people will be getting used to the benefits of water recreation. All of this extra demand should mean there are many more projects to be entered into the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards 2021 (or beyond). The entries for the Awards will be open this month, and so members are encouraged to enter the industry’s longest established awards event. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of a number of BISHTA and SPATA members, who help to make it possible to put on the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, this helps to promote the industry and to recognise the achievements of the work undertaken by members. Following the Awards, Sallie LeslieGolding and the PIP Committee then maximise exposure to generate publicity within the trade and consumer press. On page, 32 Sallie explains the national campaign to promote the UK pool and hot tub industry in the wake of Coronavirus with our newly-appointed PR partner Speed Communications. This is a very exciting time for the industry to raise its profile further. Finally, in this issue, my thanks to Claire Halle-Smith at Wright Hassall for their article on page 33 explaining IR35 (the off-payroll working rules). Wright Hassall’s professional support is always welcome, and I know that some SPATA members choose to use them when they need legal assistance. Stay safe!

Moving Forward Together With 2020 undoubtedly being a year unlike any other, we highlight a number of initiatives and resources that have been made available through BISHTA and SPATA to assist companies operating across the wet leisure industry

W

hen we look back at this year, we are all going to want to see that we have maximised every drop of positivity that we can find in what will have been a challenging year. None of us can know what the remainder of 2020 will bring (and even the prospects for next year) but as we get used to the ‘New Normal’, in these uncertain times, what we can do is be stronger by working together. As we entered the Government enforced lockdown, many of us were left shell shocked by the immensity of the effect that Coronavirus had on our lives and livelihoods. But then ensued a time of assessment to collect our thoughts and get down to business. The team at BISHTA and SPATA (Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Isabel Lock, Debbie Thornton and Caroline Cross) and also the SPATEX team (Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Thay Castro and Penny Farmer) both led by Chris Hayes, didn’t waste any time. The whole team were soon in the swing of a new way of working – remotely at home. Which meant there was no downtime in terms of the service offering to members and exhibitors. The various committees, not only of BISHTA and SPATA but also BSPF, PIP, and SPATEX were called into action, and their respective plans started to formulate to support members and exhibitors in the way forward. As we all got used to remote working, various meeting tools have come into play to keep business moving.

COVID-19 SUPPORT TOOLS A new page was established on the BISHTA and SPATA websites specific to Coronavirus COVID-19, which is accessible to the whole

industry. This means that you don’t need to be a member of BISHTA or SPATA to view this information. Eventually, this page will be moved to the secure online Member’s Hub, but the trade associations felt it was important that the whole industry work together and pull in the same direction in these unprecedented times. Chris Hayes wrote to The Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to state a case for our industry when the Government were highlighting various industries as ‘essential’. The industry also contacted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Public Health England (PHE), Sport England, and Trading Standards to lobby on the importance of our services concerning water hygiene management. Due to the health and safety risks of water leisure products being left untreated across the country, both domestic and commercial, it was argued that it was essential for our industry to continue to be able to help maintain safe water while adhering to the specified safe working stipulations during the lockdown. Therefore, visitors to the Trade Association Coronavirus pages will find helpful documents such as the; Pool and Hot Tub Industry View on Coronavirus and Coronavirus Q&A for both BISHTA and SPATA.

WORKFORCE SAFETY For workforce guidance, companies can download a very useful infographic which provides simple visual advice for those continuing to work onsite during the Coronavirus pandemic. The development of this infographic poster (right) highlights the value of working together. Members sent a version of this infographic to BISHTA and SPATA from the Arboricultural Association who kindly permitted for our industry to reuse it. However, Alex Kemsley (a BISHTA and SPATA member) chose to redesign the infographic and donated it free of charge for the industry to use. This poster can be downloaded and displayed in workplaces, used for training, carried in work vehicles and used as a reassurance to customers on your companies’ safe working policies. Along with this infographic poster, a new factsheet setting out further guidance and supporting the online information provides a helpful resource. Following the suggestion by Dyfed Thompson-Smith (PIP Chairman) both BISHTA and SPATA have been providing

Advice for those continuing to work on site during

the Coronavirus pandemic BISHTA and SPATA recognise that many people working in our industry cannot work from home. They can work onsite following suitable public health guidance and keeping staff and other people safe. The associations recommend that members should consider any health and safety duty they may have to their business / domestic clients in managing the water hygiene of their pools / hot tubs. This consideration should be balanced with the requirement to protect the health and safety of staff, contractors and clients during this public health pandemic. If you do decide to work on site, then any tasks must be carried out safely, and in line with public health guidance, so we would urge you to do the following:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Only travel to work if you are unable to work from home

Only work if you are not showing symptoms of Coronavirus

Do not work in any households where someone is self-isolating

Always maintain a 2m distance from others

PUTTING A SPOTLIGHT ON THE UK POOL AND HOT TUB INDUSTRY On page 32 you can read all about the plans for a nationwide PR campaign which is funded by the Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) committee providing a great opportunity for the whole UK pool and hot tub industry to come together. The pandemic lockdown has meant people have spent more time in their homes and more time assessing their lifestyles, resulting in a growing desire to make improvements to their homes and especially their gardens. Adding to this, if we consider the likely restrictions applied on foreign travel for the foreseeable future, there is strong evidence that people are looking to improve their homes and lifestyle with water leisure products featuring high up on the list.

THE WINNING MENTALITY – ‘YOU’VE GOT TO BE IN IT, TO WIN IT’ The annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA as part of the Industry Gala Evening is a vital way to provide much-needed publicity and good news stories. With this in mind, 2021 is a big year for the trade associations, as SPATA celebrates its 60th anniversary, and BISHTA celebrates its 20th anniversary. SPATEX itself will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Plans have started to be set in place for a celebration to remember at the Industry Gala Awards evening during SPATEX 2021. Providing some great events to look forward to and the awards create a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best examples of the industry in construction, design, installation, retail, service and innovation. The British Pool & Hot Tub Awards are the longest-running and most wellrespected awards in the UK industry, and the affiliation with BISHTA and SPATA raises the profile of these awards in consumers’ minds. The knowledge that winners of the awards are certified members of the trade associations and work to their standards and code of ethics provides an additional endorsement for winning companies. With the planned national PR campaign, mentioned above, the relevance of BISHTA and SPATA membership will be even more at the forefront of consumers minds when making their purchase decisions. Online entry to the 2021 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards opens this month, and this

is your chance to celebrate your successes and grow your company profile. There is an increased demand for water leisure products currently, but even when business is good, and turnover is healthy, you should never stop marketing your business, and this is where the strength of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards can help showcase your company and give it the spotlight it deserves. These awards play a crucial role in promoting the industry, not only to the trade but more importantly, to a wider consumer audience. Judging comes directly from top industry specialists who regularly work with BISHTA and SPATA. Entries are also anonymously judged, based on the quality of the entry and fairly awarded using a points system. Therefore, winning a British Pool & Hot Tub Award is a mark of excellence from the water leisure industry. Winning an industry award is always going to be good for business, it’s great publicity, an endorsement of your company, and it can have a significant impact on your turnover. But it’s what you do with awards which makes the real difference to your turnover. If you can maximise the use of your PR and Marketing channels after winning your award, you could see some fantastic results. The Awards have been designed to appeal to a wide cross-section of the consumer press. Year on year, the coverage for the award-winners (both locally and nationally) is gaining more and more momentum. And if we find that 2021 becomes a more challenging year for businesses, should the economy be negatively affected, the marketing that you set in place now will help your business going forward. The award ceremony takes place annually

at the Industry Gala Evening, the biggest water leisure industry social event of the year. The evening is always scheduled for the first night at SPATEX held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. The next event is to be held on Tuesday 2 February 2021. Seats for the evening are open to the whole industry; you do not need to be a BISHTA or SPATA member to attend the Industry Gala Evening. More news on the event and how to book seats will be available in future issues of SPN and also on the BISHTA, SPATA and SPATEX websites. Entering the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards also opens the door to Europe! As award-winning companies are eligible to be shortlisted for the European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations). Winning these awards can provide UK winners with further publicity and helps to raise their profiles not only in the UK but also around the rest of Europe. You can enter the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards via the respective members’ hub of the BISHTA and SPATA websites by clicking on the ‘Online Entry’ button or under the ‘Trade’ section. If you are interested in joining BISHTA or SPATA or being an award sponsor, please contact the relevant association. With the economic challenges that may lie ahead and with the health uncertainties that Coronavirus has brought, we all must work together to encourage consumers to fulfil their dreams of pool, spa, hot tub, sauna and steam ownership. National Campaign To Promote The Industry In The Wake Of Coronavirus As PR & Marketing Manager for the BSPF, BISHTA and SPATA, Sallie Leslie- Golding shares news on an exciting consumer PR and marketing campaign set to benefit every company involved in the UK pool and hot tub industry

S

ince joining the industry in 2013, I have been working with the Pool Industry Promotions committee (PIP). The PIP committee was established in the mid1990s with an emphasis on PR and marketing on behalf of the industry. Today’s committee has representatives from both the pool and hot tub sectors providing a combination of experience in all parts of the industry. Knowledge and opinions are freely shared with a common interest in driving the industry forward. In general, the committee meets quarterly, and once per year, the PIP strategy is reviewed to set plans in place for the coming year. The work programme incorporates items such as traditional and digital PR (trade and consumer), media monitoring, contact with press and media, case studies, factsheets, the PIP marketing toolkit, exhibitions and events, website development and performance, e-newsletters, social media, market research, advertising, partnerships and campaigns. With funding coming from SPATEX – the UK’s only dedicated pool, spa and wellness show – along with contribution from BISHTA and SPATA members. While promoting the industry (as a whole) is the ultimate goal, there is great value in encouraging businesses to join BISHTA and SPATA. By encouraging companies to join the trade associations, we help to raise the profile of the industry so that consumers can shop with confidence in the knowledge that trade association members are working to nationally recognised standards and a Code of Ethics. This, in turn, builds a stronger industry with a more effective voice, filtering out those companies who may be unethically trading and selling sub-standard products. The trade associations aim to raise the profile of member companies to the forefront of consumers’ minds to provide trust and peace of mind. When the Coronavirus lockdown began in March, there were concerns from the various committees (notably the SPATEX board following a suggestion from Alex Kemsley) that our industry was going to be hit hard. So,

the PIP committee got to work with putting together a marketing campaign brief to boost the industry post-lockdown. PIP agreed that we needed to get a great PR agency on board with scope for broad PR reach and who would be able to drive increased publicity for the industry with multi-channel techniques. At the end of April, using online meetings, the PIP Committee saw campaign pitches from eight agencies presenting a variety of proposals. We are happy to say that we have now appointed Speed Communications, a fantastic fullservice digital promotional agency. As we have all experienced, the country is changing daily because of COVID-19 and so are the buying behaviours of consumers. Subsequently, our initial concerns for the industry have changed somewhat since the beginning of lockdown. Looking at Google Trends data during this time, the hot tub industry has been experiencing increased interest from consumers. And although people do not seem to be searching online for home swimming pools right now, there are searches for pool related products such as pool heaters and pool covers. To substantiate this, we have spoken to some BISHTA and SPATA members, and they are experiencing increased demand for their products. Therefore, PIP feels that we need to capitalise on this interest and the surge in demand. This campaign will primarily be a consumer (B2C) marketing campaign to make waves for the pool and hot tub industry, through

a creative campaign that generates positive noise in the media and comes to life to make pools and hot tubs the must-have items this summer and beyond. The campaign will be built around ‘staycations at home’, introducing pools and hot tubs to create an #everydaycation lifestyle. As I have mentioned, there is increased demand for water leisure products, so we want to build on this throughout 2020 and have a second ‘bite of the cherry’ in 2021 to reignite the campaign. Speed Communications have commenced work with research into the target audiences for pool and hot tubs, looking at differences and common interests. By the time this article is published, actions will be well underway, and we will be looking to communicate ways that your company ‘canget-involved’ and join forces industry-wide in maximising the increased publicity. The best way for us to do this would be through e-shots. BISHTA and SPATA members will receive updates in their respective weekly e-newsletter and the online Member’s Hub, where we will share tools and creatives to get involved, along with news of any media coverage that members can amplify in their local areas. If you are not a trade association member and you would like to participate, please email your contact details to me (sallie@pool-industry-promotions.co.uk), and we will keep you updated with the latest news. Alternatively, if you are interested in joining BISHTA or SPATA, please get in touch, and we can progress your membership application ASAP. We would like to thank the PIP Committee for their continued commitment during these unprecedented times; Dyfed Thompson-Smith (Chairman), Jeremy Chalke, Neil Dalziel, Phil Gordon, Arun Sarna, Jon Herbert, Mark Ramsden and Alex Kemsley. Work now starts to get the campaign live, with Chris Hayes (Managing Director – BISHTA/SPATA) and myself working with Speed Communications in the coming weeks to roll out the campaign. IR35… What Does It Mean For You? With new rules coming into effect in April 2021, Claire Halle-Smith, Senior Associate in the Commercial Team at Wright Hassall, takes a closer look at IR35 and the changes for medium and large private sector businesses which engage workers through intermediaries

I

R35 is another name for the off-payroll working rules. These were introduced to address a form of perceived tax avoidance where individuals may seek to avoid paying employee income tax and national insurance contributions (‘NICs’) by providing their services through an intermediary, such as a personal service company (‘PSC’). The rules are essentially looking to ensure that two individuals working in the same or similar ways will pay the same or very similar income tax and NICs, even if one is engaged via an intermediary.

WHEN WILL IR35 APPLY? From 6 April 2021, all medium and large private sector businesses which engage workers through intermediaries such as PSCs will be responsible for determining if the individual should be considered an employee for tax purposes.

WHO WILL BE AFFECTED? Medium and large private sector businesses will be affected by these changes to IR35. Small businesses will not be affected. The precise test to determine whether or not a business is caught by the new rules will be set once the Finance Bill 2019 has been finalised and passed as an Act. Currently, a business will be exempt if two or more of the following criteria are satisfied: • Its annual turnover is not more than £10.2m; • Its balance sheet total is not more than £5.1m; and / or • Its number of employees is not more than 50.

WHAT IS A STATUS DETERMINATION AND WHEN / HOW MUST THIS BE MADE? If IR35 applies, the business receiving the

services from the individual must make a status determination statement. This is a statement which sets out the business’ conclusions as to whether or not it believes that the individual would be regarded (for income tax purposes) as an employee of that business if the services were being provided under a direct contract between the business and the individual. A status determination statement will be valid even if the business has incorrectly concluded that an employment relationship does not exist, but the business must have taken reasonable care in coming to its conclusion. The status determination and the reasons for the determination will need to be communicated to the individual and to all other parties in the contractual chain between the client business and the individual concerned (i.e. the intermediary/ PSC and any agency if relevant). For ongoing contracts, the status determination must be communicated to the individual (and any intermediary and agent) before the first payment for services is made after 6 April 2021. For new contracts, the communication of the status determination should predate the start of the contract or, if later, the date on which services under the contract are first provided.

WHO WILL PAY INCOME TAX AND NICS IF IR35 APPLIES? The ‘fee-payer’ is responsible for payment of any income tax and NICs that may apply. If the business contracts directly with the individual’s intermediary, then the business will be the fee-payer. If the business relies on an agency to source and contract with the intermediary, then the agency is likely to be the fee-payer and responsible for making those payments. However, if the business does not make

... all medium and large private sector businesses which engage workers through intermediaries such as PSCs will be responsible for determining if the individual should be considered an employee for tax purposes” www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 33_SPN_June_20_Wright_Hassall.indd 33

a status determination, it does not provide its reasoning behind its decision as to the individual’s employment status, or it does not take reasonable care in making the determination, the determination will be invalid, and the business will retain feepayer status, regardless of the involvement of any agency. It is therefore important for the business to keep detailed records of each status determination, including the reasons for the determination and the fees paid. HMRC has developed an online tool for a business to check employment status for tax (CEST). While there is no obligation to use this tool and while there is criticism by businesses and individuals alike as to its accuracy, the tool does have the advantage that HMRC will be bound by the output of the tool unless it has been obtained fraudulently / through manipulated data.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A BUSINESS? Where a business is the fee-payer as referred to above and when the status determination deems the individual an employee of the business, in summary, the business must: • calculate the deemed direct payment to account for income tax and NICs associated with the contract; • deduct those taxes and NICs from the payment to an individual’s intermediary; • pay employer NICs; and • report to HMRC as to the taxes and NICs deducted. STA POOL PLANT – VIRTUAL TRAINING

Changing From Training Rooms To Online Courses During COVID-19 In response to COVID-19, Safety Training Awards have been providing new and innovative ways of delivering pool plant qualifications online as a short-term solution to the pandemic, but could virtual training be a useful tool when things return back to normal? Luke Griffiths, Qualification Development Manager at Safety Training Awards discusses here

I

n March, at the time of writing this, all face-to-face training courses had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 and we wanted to provide a real practical solution to help ATCs through this unique time, while maintaining the robustness and quality of the qualifications. With swimming pools forced to close and people having to self-isolate at home, virtual learning became a legitimate option for leisure operators who wanted to make the most of the downtime by training employees and save on future backfilling staffing costs. As well as facilitating ATCs to continue to operate remotely without face-to-face contact with learners – and crucially maintain an income. With pool plant qualifications being predominantly theoretical, we created options for trainers to deliver the qualification online and as a further step, approached GoToWebinar who agreed to offer our tutors exclusive discounts on their interactive meeting and webinar services. For learners, all they would need is a

stable internet connection, a working camera, audio and a mic which are integrated in to most laptops and mobile devices. Plus, because all of our learning portfolios and revision packs are available in an editable digital format, learners can complete them digitally. While online learning is not a new concept for many industries, for pool plant trainers it is a game-changer and could even change the end-to-end delivery of training and assessments in the long-term, post COVID-19. Importantly, if the ease and availability of an online process helps even more people gain access to regulated professional pool plant training, this can only be a positive for the future health and safety of our swimming pools.

Integrating Conference Calls Into Training One Safety Training Awards’ ATC that already offers conference call courses and training is Essex-based D P Leisure. Here, D P’s Dean Bolton answers some questions on the best ways to integrate conference calls into training: Q What types of courses have you run using conference calls? A We have run predominantly non-regulated training courses, such as

send back to us following the conference call. We can then mark the papers and issue certificates of attendance to each learner.

AED awareness and save a life workshops and these have been for global businesses who link up from all around the world. Our latest conference course was an AED awareness session for a British company who are based in New York.

Q Where do you deliver these training courses from? A The beauty about the future of training (conference calls) is you could

Q From your own experience what sort of learner numbers work best? A D P Leisure personally cap each conference call session to a maximum of 8 persons per course. This gives space for any open questions that require to be answered without the confusion of others talking over each other etc.

Q How have you assessed learners when delivering this style of course? A We assess learners by a verbal theoretical question session. We also send out an in-house question paper that learners can complete and

34 June 2020 SPN 34_SPN_June_20_STA.indd 34

literally deliver these from your own home or office. As long as you have appropriate equipment, a good internet connection, the audience, then you are good to go. This will be ideal for freelance trainers, or trainers who would normally only teach at other venues due to not having a physical venue themselves.

Q How different is it teaching a conference call rather than face-to-face? A D P Leisure thought it was very exciting teaching via a video link rather than seeing the learners personally. We do like to see all learners via video link, and to be honest it wasn’t much different. We still had the same questions, chats, and acknowledgement we would have had if it was a face-to-face course.

POOL & SPA DESIGN

Essential Design Elements For Later Living Customers With the number of ‘Later Living’ developments set to rise in the coming years, Tom Devin of Devin Consulting Ltd takes a look at a number of key design considerations for this specific market sector

T

he traditional model for retirement homes is being turned on its head as new ‘Later Living’ developments are incorporating modern technology and offering high-end amenities with an emphasis on health and wellness. In a departure from the past, retirement homes are increasingly being operated by the developer who builds and manages the site offering a village-like community with restaurants, GP surgeries, cinemas, guest accommodation for visitors, games rooms, gyms, pools and health suites. This new model is attracting serious investors like Legal & General who plan to build 50 such later living developments over the next ten years. Devin Consulting has led the way in tailoring pool and spa design for this demographic and has worked closely with the design teams for companies like Legal & General, Auriens, Elysian Residences and Pegasus Life to develop best practice. Space is a vital consideration when it comes to planning spa amenities for an aging client group – doors to steam and sauna rooms need to be wider and ample space must be allowed within to allow wheelchair users to turn. Suitability of exposed heating elements in sauna cabins should also be a consideration to protect users from stumbling or falling into

Walk-in steps with hand rail and glass fronted heat experience cabins

the heat source. There is a balance to be sought between future proofing the facilities and anticipating a time when residents become a little more infirm and require extra help and creating beautiful facilities with the look and feel of a health club and spa – and this is where Devin’s experience is invaluable. One safety measure that appeals to designers is the use of full glass frontage for heat experience cabins – it allows for easy observation in case of falls or illness and it looks stunning as well. With regards to pool design, Devin recommends level deck pools for ease of Heat source is hidden in this sauna

access with walk in steps with hand rails rather than ladders – additionally an in-pool hand rail can be considered for extra grip. Some of our clients are also allowing for in-pool access platforms which allow users with poor mobility to enter the pool without the use of a hoist – Devin has designed a bespoke option for this. Another consideration is that of slippage – a high level slip resistance finish should be used to prevent falls due to slippery surfaces. With regards to spa pool design consideration must be given to the water features elements – softer water jets are better for the more delicate skin – so avoid deep tissue massage features. Whilst safety for the end user is paramount throughout the design process the aesthetics are always at the forefront of the projects. Specialist engineering does not need to compromise the architects’ vision. Devin Consulting Ltd 0191 258 1653 www.devin-consulting.com

OUR POPULATION OF SENIORS HAS HIGH EXPECTATIONS The office for national statistics confirms that more than 18% of the UK population is aged 65 and over. This equates to around 1 person in 5 and this is projected to reach around one in every four people (24.2%) in the next 20 years. We are living longer and are fitter than our parents and grandparents and the business approach for retirement homes must adopt a completely new perspective. In 2019, research by the Centre for Ageing Better showed that 414,000 older people now rent a property, up 63% from 254,000 people in 2007. By 2040, more than a third of over 60s will be living in private rented accommodation, according to the study.

BRAND FOCUS

Superior Fire Off To Budapest After Hitting Target

With an ambitious target of spa sales achieved, we highlight a recent trip taken by the staff at Superior Spas which celebrated the company’s successful 2019 and was used to further build on the already strong team ties

‘A

mbitious targets are always achievable’ – that was the message from Superior Spas Managing Director, Rob Carlin, as the company enjoyed a few days team bonding in the Hungarian capital of Budapest recently. 2019 was a year that broke many records for Superior Spas with an increase of over 53% in spa sales on the previous year – an impressive feat which saw the Chesterfieldbased company hit the magic figure of 6,000 spas sold and in doing so, hitting the testing target set by Rob. Rob explained that team building is incredibly important to Superior Spas and is one of the reasons they have successfully become the biggest distributor of hot tubs in the UK. However, Rob – supported by the rest of his team – won’t be resting on his laurels. His next target is to become the biggest and best distributor in Europe, a desire that his Superior team are very focused on achieving. Rob said: “Having the best team is important to me and ours is a team of achievers working together to reach our goals.” He continued: “We have regular team get togethers, meals out etc., however I did set a big target and big targets deserve big rewards, so I promised

that if Team Superior reached 6,000 spas in 2019, I would take them all away – so Team Superior are in Budapest having great fun.” The four-day, long extended weekend break was a huge step for Superior Spas as they had to close the whole company down in acknowledgement of their achievements and headed for a fun packed break. Everything was superbly organised by Office Manager Lauren Bradley who had put together a fun filled and varied itinerary for each day including guided tours, museum visits, a trip down the impressive caves and even the odd beverage stop along the way, allowing Team Superior to fully enjoy the beautiful delights the city of Budapest has to offer. The highlight for many was an extended trip to a local shooting range where the team enjoyed a great afternoon putting their aim to the test with eight different firearms, including a mixture of hand guns and rifles, before heading off for a wonderful celebration meal later in the evening. Gareth Ward, Sales Director at Superior Spas commented: “We

are very fortunate to have such a fantastic team of individuals, all bringing different skill sets that we all learn from. We couldn’t be where we are today as a company or achieve the goals we set without every one of our employees and this is a fitting way to say thank you to them.” The Superior Spas website says ‘We demand excellence and meet every challenge with quality whilst keeping our products affordable. We pride ourselves on our customer service, the reliability of our products and our warranties. We offer a wide range of hot tubs and swim spas at a variety of price levels’ and it’s a statement and philosophy that’s clearly proved exceptional results for the company. So what comes next year if Superior hit what is sure to be another testing target? Rob Carlin said: “As an overall experience, this will take some beating but believe me, if we hit our 2020 target, I will find a way. A good team deserve a good reward, that’s what Superior Spas is all about, look after your dealers and look after your staff and they will look after you.” If you are interested in joining Superior Spas family and being part of their winning network of dealers, then contact Graham Message in Business Development for more information. HIGH-END HOT TUBS

A Premium Home Hot Tub Experience With the Coronavirus outbreak creating unprecedented demand for hot tubs, the luxury end of the sector is a key battleground for both manufacturers and retailers in the UK. Targeting the serious enthusiast, who demands the very latest in technology and features, high-end hot tubs costing in excess of £10,000 aim to provide their users with the ultimate setting for relaxation, recuperation and more. This issue, we look at the brands and models competing at the luxury end of the market By Jon Wadeson

T

he premium end of the hot tub sector has always been a key battleground for both retailers and manufacturers, especially with so many cheaper models and brands on the market. However this year has been a little different. Uncertainty caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, combined with some decent weather and of course, many children being schooled from home has meant outdoor entertainment, including hot tubs across all price ranges, have been firmly on the radar of lots of families. “With many luxury summer holidays cancelled this year, customers are taking the opportunity to enjoy the finer things in life from the comfort of their own home. Not only that, they are choosing to invest their money more wisely in good quality, high end luxury products like our Artesian Elite Class,” said Vicky Wrigglesworth, Director at Artesian Spas UK. Range-topping products are a chance to fully showcase each brand’s design capabilities, imagination, quality and more to potential customers. In short, they’re brand flag-bearers – which makes them important for reputations as they will have a bearing on a customer’s perception of cheaper models within each brand’s range. With budgets often well into five-figure territory for these models, any customer looking to invest in this sector quite rightly demands the latest features and innovations combined with a sense of style and exclusivity. So with a lot to live up to, and with premium products very much playing their part in a year where customers and their budgets are more than ever, we take a look at just some of the luxury models that are available.

ABOVE-GROUND & WOODEN POOLS

Above-ground Options Offer Affordable Pool Fun Over recent years, the demand for above-ground pools has been under pressure, but with the Coronavirus outbreak creating uncertainty around holidays in 2020, they’ve really come into their own this summer. ooden and above-ground pools is a sector which continues to be popular, and that’s not just because of their affordable price tag. Size and flexibility combined in an easy to use and simple to install package also play their part. The beauty of these pools mean that they are within reach of those families who dream of getting on the ‘pool owning ladder’ and this mix of cost and convenience has really come into its own over recent months with the Coronavirus lockdown combining with rising temperatures resulting in many families spending money on various garden-based products. Whether it’s been for entertainment while the kids have been off, to provide a form of exercise or because holiday plans are somewhat up in the air – manufacturers and retailers of above-ground pools of all shapes have seen demand go through the proverbial roof this season. For families with plans of longer term pool ownership – who aren’t just reacting to and throwing money at the current situation – a little imagination and landscaping can mean that the options available for these versatile units can transform a garden and provide fun and relaxation for owners for a much lower Plastica’s flagship wooden pool is the Chelsea, the largest wooden pool currently available, measuring 5 x 10 metres

cost than that associated with a full sized swimming pool. Increasingly these high quality pools have been sought by families or owners who want to make the pool into a real feature in their garden and they are often sunk into the ground with landscaping, decking and planting really finishing the project off. The ease of building is a big advantage over other types of pools and with installs taking just a few days, above-ground pools are a great optional extra for any home or garden and can often be an impulse buy. With so much going for them and with an uncertain future with regards to holidays right now, it’s no wonder that the British public has started to look at the more serious aboveground and wooden pools as an investment for both their families and gardens, and this will undoubtedly end up being a fantastic year for the above-ground and wooden pool sector plus of course, any and all extras that go with them!

The redwood walls are professionally notched in-house on the state-of-the-art machinery to guarantee ease of build and maximise the strength of the construction. DOUGHBOY HELP TO MAKE ‘A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES’ More than 65 years ago, Doughboy forever changed outdoor family entertainment with the introduction of the first portable, storable, above-ground swimming pool. Since then, they’ve earned a worldwide reputation for creating and maintaining the highest standards of design, engineering and service. With a Doughboy pool, customers can also get the in-ground look for less, especially if budgets won’t allow for a traditional in-ground pool. Expandable to 7 feet deep and providing fast installation (go from green grass to blue water in only four days) the pools cost

much less than the cost of a traditional in-ground pool, can be recessed into the ground and offer lifetime warranties. Doughboy know the number one reason people buy a pool is to make memories – so they build their pools to last for a ‘Lifetime of memories’. The pool dimensions are a ‘true’ size based on the inside pool wall and they also have a ‘true’ vertical and top rail measurement. These dimensions are measured by a straight vertical dimension. Doughboy UK also sell wooden pools. The Interline Bali is a luxury quality family pool, suitable for above-ground or built-in. ‘Nordic Pine’ wood class 4, also offers a simple and solid construction and because of this the Interline Bali swimming pool is easy to build; it will bring you – and that’s a guarantee – at least ten years of swimming fun! The walls of the swimming pool are 45 mm thick and therefore extremely well thermally insulated. The high-quality swimming pool foil is 70/100 mm thick. A Interline Bali swimming pool is built by stacking the wooden beams which slot together using a tongue and groove system to guarantee optimum resistance against water pressure. The Interline Bali swimming pool comes with extensive building instructions. Using the drawings and detailed explanations, any competent DIYer will be able to build their own swimming pool.

CASE STUDY THE WOODEN POOL THAT’S A CUT ABOVE This eye-catching installation of the Certikin wooden pool by Salisbury pool retailer, Spruce Pools, illustrates why the aboveground pool wins out on aesthetics, quality materials and clever design to maintain its position as market leader. The owner of this pool originally requested that Spruce Pools install an in-ground swimming pool. However, the property is surrounded by two rivers, running either side of it, with a water table only 80cm down, ruling out the chance of installing an in-ground pool. The Certikin wooden aboveground pool provided the perfect solution. Managing Director of Spruce Pools, Jeremy Chalke said: “The installation went very smoothly, we took delivery on Monday

lunchtime and the customer was swimming by Friday evening, even though the water temperature was only 20°C. “The customer was absolutely delighted with the end result and uses the pool from April through to October. This is the third wooden pool that we have installed

and each has been so successful that we intend promoting this product heavily in the future.” Jeremy added: “Leaving aside the fact that it is a stylish and superb quality pool, we like the wooden pool because it is Certikin. That means we know it’s solid and of sound construction; we have the assurance that we can easily get spares and we can access the whole raft of service and technical back-up that Certikin offers.” Spruce Pools 01722 323895 www.sprucepools.co.uk

ABOVE-GROUND & WOODEN POOLS With enhanced aesthetics, the Luxor (left) and Pacific (right) models from SCP UK are sure to be particularly popular with UK consumers

BUDGETS WON’T BE AN ISSUE WITH SCP’S RANGE OF ABOVE-GROUND OPTIONS To complement their extensive, popular and exclusive Gardipool wooden pools line-up, last year, SCP UK introduced a value for money range of above-ground pools to the trade. The Pacific, Serena and Luxor models are available in a range of sizes and are available in circular or oval formats. With enhanced aesthetics, the high-end Steel Series Serena and Luxor models are sure to be particularly popular with UK consumers. Influenced by contemporary trends reflective of today’s new urban spaces, both of these 52” deep models are sure to satisfy the expectations of those looking for something a little different. Both of these easy to assemble, space saving pools come with: a patterned liner, sand filter and pump combination, widemouth skimmer, hard plumb kit, ladder and water treatment kit. They both also feature: • An 8-inch Shadow grey steel top ledge • Shadow grey steel uprights • Pepper grey high impact resin ledge cover • All steel components protected with TruKote bonding system • An interlocking stabiliser system. All the pools within this range have been designed to enhance backyard enjoyment without taking up too much space – and at a price that won’t break the bank. However, when it comes to overall look, unsurprisingly, the slightly more expensive Luxor edges it. Influenced by contemporary trends reflective of today’s new urban spaces, Luxor is sure to satisfy the expectations of those AstralPool have been selling Laghetto pools for over 2 years and their best-selling models include this, the Dolcevita

Nothing has been left to chance. Textures, colours, angles and even proportions here redefine current trends and confirm its excellence. With the reintroduction of wood patterns through new printing technology, combined with the wall’s graphic simplicity, the Luxor achieves an unparalleled level of quality.

OFFERING ITALIAN STYLE – LAGHETTO FROM ASTRALPOOL AstralPool have been selling Laghetto pools for over two years now and the market for these stunning looking, modular and easy build pools that complement the surrounding environment continues to grow. Through the use of revolutionary technology, the Laghetto team responded with creative insight to the demand for an evercloser image of Italian design for the garden setting resulting in their best-selling models – the great looking Playa and Dolcevita. The Dolcevita reinterprets the concept of an above-ground pool, and created a contemporary solution, with harmony and style. Dolcevita is presented in a collection of three different models – Diva, Rattan and Woody – and regardless of the model chosen, the materials used are of the highest quality and are guaranteed. The Dolcevita pools range is equipped with

a recirculation system and adequate water filtration of the highest standard too. The Dolcevita system allows great versatility, and pools are assembled and disassembled in no time at all. They can even be used in areas where only temporary structures for seasonal use are allowed. Dolcevita is a pool system that gives maximum freedom of choice, from aesthetics to the materials used, up to the type of installation. The Playa – the smaller cousin of Dolcevita – is an elegant mini-pool created by great Italian design. The gentle hydromassage, the heated water, the pleasantness of the hand woven fibres, invite users to stay within the pool for a long time and enjoy total relaxation. The Playa can be enjoyed both indoors and outside the home. It’s sophisticated and adaptable – perfect for a terrace or a deck. In the garden, the Playa becomes a piece of furniture and in the house, a real water lounge. With its soft sunbathing areas and the submergible cushions, with the pleasantness of the hand woven fabrics, the Playa is completely customisable, from the sunbed area to the wicker exterior panels.

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK

With the Water-Tec LED lighting range being made in the UK, Fairlocks can provide the right lights and equipment for the job with the support from a UK manufacturing company

Flying The Flag For British-made Pool Products While a lot of products used in the wet leisure sector are produced abroad, there are numerous quality solutions that are made in the UK too – and in addition to helping the wider economy and providing jobs, there are a number of additional benefits to buying British-made goods. In this issue, we take a closer look at those benefits and some of the products within the swimming pool sector that are flying the flag for UK manufacturing By Jon Wadeson

I

n a follow up to our feature last year on British-made within the Wellness sector, in this issue, we take a look at products that are being manufactured for swimming pools, right here in the UK. The pool sector differs somewhat from Wellness in that it’s a much more mature market and as such, has more established brands. Often, many of these have been tackling the specific challenges that pool ownership in the UK poses. So what are the benefits of buying one of these British produced products? Well there are many but the obvious one is that it helps to keep UK people employed meaning that the economy benefits from money being paid to local people who then are likely to spend most of their income here in Britain. There are eco-friendly reasons too. With local manufacturing there should be a much lower impact on the environment as products are supplied to the immediate market – and that’s something which is becoming increasingly important to many buyers. Another reason is that British manufacturing genuinely is amongst the best in the world, resulting in quality products, time after time. Companies who manufacture in the UK can usually provide much shorter

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 49-52_SPN_June_20_Manufactured_In_The_UK.indd 49

lead times and can often respond to special requests much quicker than companies who import products. Should something go wrong with a UK produced product, it’s likely it can be repaired or replaced much more easily too. Finally, currency exchange rate fluctuations have a much lower impact on products manufactured in the UK. It’s not just a case of national pride or flag waving – there are genuine and persuasive arguments to source products manufactured in the UK.

From its UK base, Heatstar has pioneered the innovation, design and manufacture of environmental control systems such as this Andromeda unit

HEATSTAR – MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY IN THE UK, APPLIED WORLDWIDE Many UK manufacturers, particularly in the swimming pool industry, have opted to manufacture their products in other countries outside the UK. Heatstar, from its UK base has, for 40 years now, pioneered the innovation, design and manufacture of modern, highly energy efficient, environmental control systems for swimming pools. During this time the brand has become a market leader in this field with an enviable reputation for quality. Heatstar units contain some of the very best specialist components from the USA

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK and Europe but the complete product, its design and construction, is only produced in Heatstar’s own manufacturing facility on the Isle of Wight in the South of England. Because “quality” is at the heart of every Heatstar product the company’s philosophy is simple – the best place to build their products is in their own UK factory by the people who have Heatstar’s values in their DNA and who can deliver the company’s exacting standards in build quality and reliability. The brand is proud of its heritage as a British manufacturer for the last forty years. It is one of the reasons why Heatstar, in addition to its UK success, exports to customers all around the world including Europe, Russia, China and a multitude of other prominent territories. Although Heatstar products are designed, developed and manufactured in the UK they are still very much specified worldwide and can be found in leading hotels and leisure facilities around the globe. With innovation, performance and energy efficiency at their heart, you know what you are getting and where it is originating from. If it’s Heatstar, then it’s British!

A WIDE RANGE OF BRITISH-MADE FROM ONE OF THE MARKET LEADERS Certikin have a genuine and long-standing belief in the importance of supporting British industry. That is why they are proud that many of their leading products are manufactured right here in the UK. The range of UK products by Certikin is extensive meaning you can apply British quality throughout any pool project. Starting with the basics, Certikin’s range of white goods including skimmers, main drains, inlets, pipes and fittings can be installed alongside their PU9 and PU6 lights which are the most popular and reliable lights in the pool industry. For perfectly clean and clear water, Certikin’s range of British built

Certikin has been manufacturing liners and covers for over 15 years at its Leeds-based factory and is now established as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers for these products

ultraviolet units have been specifically designed to prevent green water in swimming pools and reduce chemical consumption. As you would expect from one of the market leaders, Certikin have a range of heating options for any size of pool, many of which have the stamp of British quality. They are renowned for their oil and gas boilers, and with the latter, the Genie range of gas condensing pool heaters are one of the world’s only condensing pool heaters. For the ultimate environmental control system, there is the Calorex Delta and the Variheat Series 3 for which Certikin are the sole UK distributor. These products offer a purposebuilt environmental control unit for all indoor swimming pools, commercial or domestic. Certikin’s wooden pools offer the complete package, British built to the highest quality they are a superb addition to any garden. The pools are supplied complete with a 30 thou liner which is manufactured at Certikin’s own factory located in Leeds. UK-MADE POOLS FROM THE TEAM BEHIND LIGHTHOUSE Available through Lighthouse and manufactured in Devon using insulation from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles, HeatForm pools are designed to optimise all levels of training and physical therapy, whether intense triathlon training or gentle rehabilitation to help ease aches and pains. Available with a choice of market leading integrated counter-current systems, HeatForm’s standard exercise pool kits are available in two sizes (5 x 2.5m and 6 x 3m) with a wall depth of 1.2m or 1.5m. However due to its unique modular design, a HeatForm pool can be custom built to almost any size. Suitable for installation both in-ground and above-ground, indoors or outdoors the HeatForm pool is one of the most versatile pools on the market. The benefits of using recycled plastic insulation are twofold; as well as the ecological benefits of repurposing plastic bottles and removing them from the environment, the 80mm thick insulation greatly increases the pool’s heat retention and therefore lowers the overall running costs. The average pool incorporates over 9,000 half litre plastic bottles. Manufactured in fibreglass, the smooth clean-faced panels are easy to handle and connect together, allowing them to be fixed, aligned and secured quickly. A typical 10m x 5m pool wall system can be connected together in one day, in any weather. Heatform’s clever inverta-panel design ensures you always have a pool fitting where you need it. The 1m and 1.5m panels have skimmer and inlet indents, whilst the 0.5m and 2.5m panels have filtration flow and return indents. All panels have an indent for an LED light.

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK TILED ONE-PIECE POOLS THAT ARE UK MANUFACTURED

The Mosaic Spa Company have developed a revolutionary range of UK factory built, one-piece tiled swimming pools

These are filled with simple foam knockouts allowing easy positioning of fittings where you require them in the pool. Simple and effective in design, the HeatForm panel pool system offers an affordable and eco-friendly solution to owning a dream pool.

UK IS BEST FOR WATER-TEC AND FAIRLOCKS Having worked together since 2014, WaterTec Lighting and Fairlocks Pool Products are extremely proud to be able to offer a complete range of innovative LED pool lights exclusively to the pool trade, all manufactured in the Water-Tec factory in south Oxfordshire. The LED is now the go-to option for swimming pool lighting as it offers the safest, most cost-effective option. With the WaterTec LED lighting range being made in the UK, Fairlocks can provide the right lights and equipment for the job with the support from a UK manufacturing company. With all the lighting range made of 316L stainless steel

and using high powered energy efficient LED power with up to 50,000hrs life span, with either warm or cool white, or the RGB version offering the mood/ambience of the pool. All the lighting ranges are compatible with DMX or DALI systems or controlled from basic remote to wall switches, or mobile phone app. New options for 2020 include pre-wired driver boxes for added simplicity to reduce on site installation times, also the new WT5- 2” push fit lamp. Martin Spindlow, Director of Water-Tec commented: “We are delighted to have such a close association with Fairlocks for over six years, they are only 20 minutes away from our facilities so we can keep in regular contact regarding orders and production times.” The Fairlocks team can advise on the number of lights required to provide the best lighting display for the size of pool, and what type of atmosphere the lighting design can provide. These days the options are unlimited so it comes down to style, design and the ultimate look of the finished pool that will determine the light installation.

The Mosaic Spa Company have developed a revolutionary range of UK factory built, onepiece tiled swimming pools. ‘One Pools’ are available with various tile styles as standard and come in a range of sizes from 5m x 3m up to an impressive 12m x 4.5m. All the pools come fitted with full filtration and heating systems discreetly located in an integrated storage unit at one end of the pool. A stainless steel finish on all the pool fittings perfectly complements the sophisticated design. An innovative Covrex PVC slatted pool cover can be added as an optional extra, which like the filtration systems, will be hidden away tastefully at the end of the pool. Work on the project site is kept to a minimum as One Pools are built in their entirety in the company’s innovative factory in Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire. Mike Foggin, The Mosaic Spa Company’s Business Development Director said: “This product is something we are extremely excited about. All the pools will be preplumbed and wired, meaning all that is required on site is an excavated hole with 150mm concrete slab. Being able to get such a high-quality product essentially delivered and dropped in to place is an innovation unlike the industry has seen before. Once the pool arrives by lorry, it’s lowered into the hole with a crane, connected to the relevant water and electrical points and there you have it. We think consumers who do not want all the disruption and delay of a traditionally built pool, but still require the same level of refinement will instantly fall in love with this product.” With their exceptional range of mosaic tiled products, The Mosaic Spa Company are currently experiencing a meteoric rise within the UK and European pool industry and are now planning to establish an appointed dealer network to sell the pools throughout the UK.

HYDRO-FLUX’S SUCCESS PROVES UK STARTUPS CAN FLOURISH TOO Launched in October 2017, HydroFlux Aqua Products Limited started life with one goal in mind: to manufacturer unique, innovative products that make life easier for swimming pool engineers and pool owners. With their first product, FlowBright – a pool light that generates its own electricity, eliminating the need for a complex installation, additional equipment, and electrical costs – Hydro-Flux certainly had the ideas to make this goal a reality and last year was a great one for the UK manufacturer, seeing it go from strength to strength and agree a distribution deal with Fairlocks Pool Products. The company’s latest product, the FlowBright Plus, uses the same high-flow,

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 49-52_SPN_June_20_Manufactured_In_The_UK.indd 51

low resistance patented turbine technology as the original FlowBright, however, it has been installed with a large rechargeable battery. Instead of sending the energy directly to the LED, all the power generated will be stored within the battery. Now, when the light is turned on, it will draw its energy requirements from the battery and not from

the real time coil generation. This has several advantages over the original model. FlowBright Plus’s rechargeable battery is able to function at much lower flowrates compared with the operating voltage of the LEDs, which enables it to function at flowrates significantly below 6000 l/h. Even more importantly, FlowBright Plus can be used whether the filtration system is running or not. Last but not least, FlowBright Plus will generate a significantly higher performance than the original FlowBright. Hydro-Flux Aqua Products 01924 472665 www.hydro-flux.com

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BESPOKE IN-HOUSE INNOVATION FROM GC HUB Golden Coast is building on the success of its GC Hub control panels with new innovations designed to meet ever-changing customer demands. Designed and constructed on site at the Golden Coast premises in Devon, GC Hub control panels manage multiple aspects of a pool, including lighting, temperature, water treatment and filtration, all from one single unit. Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast explained: “We are always adapting products to meet new challenges. Recently, our technical department has been exploring ways to enhance the capabilities of GC Hub control panels based on the types of queries we are receiving from customers. “For example, our engineers are utilising a new kind of PLC control system, to allow the customer to have separate user display screens in separate rooms, not just the plant room. “Remote access has also been in high demand, and this year the team has been working on GC Hub Link, which creates a local area network just for the control panel. This will enable the customer to set up multiple user access codes for various operations, as well as timers and alarms.” GC Hub control panels are available as single or three-phase units, and offer a variety of control options, such as time switches and flexible interlocks for safety equipment. The panels can include variable speed drivers for energy efficiency, as well as an economy mode for spa heaters. Depending on the customer’s preference, the panels can be operated either with button controls, a high-definition IP65 touch screen, or by wireless remote. Adam concluded: “We work closely with customers right from the start so that we can make sure we are creating a bespoke product. No two GC Hub control panels are the same, as each one we make operates to a customer’s specific installation and the front is tailored to reflect their branding.

The Argonaut pump and smaller counterpart the AG have been a resounding success with all wet end components made in the UK and assembled in Plastica’s factory

Their top seller is the Stainless Steel Anodised Aluminium Slidelock Telescopic Reel System, widely regarded as one of the best domestic reels on the market. With the export market in mind, the T-model version has been developed making it easier and more cost-effective to ship, due to its reduced pack size. Following on from the success of this product, Plastica have introduced the new Slidelock Max, with an upgraded and unique 138mm diameter anodised aluminium tubes, giving a longer range for covers up to 7.7m width and a cover area of 175sqm. The range includes an upgraded T-model, base plate and an angled wall mounting. A new Commercial Reduction Gearbox converter kit has also been manufactured to fit the Max and can also be retrofitted to all of their commercial tubes. Events Roundup With a number of events being affected by the Coronavirus pandemic and with uncertainty still remaining over some regarding their going ahead, in this issue we take a closer look at what’s on and where over the coming months By Jon Wadeson

T

he global Coronavirus pandemic has badly affected a number of businesses around the world and none more so than those operating within the exhibitions and events sectors. With uncertainty still hanging over the sector and with organisers adjusting short-term plans for a post-COVID operating environment, for a number of events, plans to go ahead were not safe or even logistically possible and a number of exhibitions around the world had no other choice than to postpone until either later in the year or into 2021. With the quickly evolving situation now seeing a number of restrictions being lifted, events in the latter part of the year have been largely unaffected in terms of rescheduling, however expect them to be somewhat different than usual. In this issue, we round up the last on wet leisure events taking place around the world in 2020 and 2021.

square metres, more than 400 exhibitors present their products and services in the field of public pool and spa construction, swimming pool technology, pools, saunas, spas and wellness. According to the organisers, globally, it is the trade fair with the largest product range in the field of saunas too. So it’s fitting that at this year’s event, a ‘Sauna from Finland’ network will be staging a special show together with Messe Stuttgart on an area of 300 square metres. Experience rooms, products and consulting services are intended to give visitors an understanding of Finland’s

unique sauna culture. Around 15,000 visitors from more than 60 countries normally attend every two years to learn about the latest products, trends and pioneering ideas. Numerous presentations, workshops and discussion sessions in two congress formats round off the bienniel events offering. When interviewed in May and asked about the importance of this years event, Dr. Christian Ochsenbauer, Managing Director of the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry said: “This will be the most important

STUTTGART SHOW TO GO AHEAD AND IS “PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT INTERBAD EVER!” interbad, the international trade fair for swimming pools, saunas and spas, is one of the world’s most important platforms for the public pools sector and one of the top three trade fairs covering all interests of private wet leisure owners. EVENTS ROUNDUP interbad for many years, and perhaps the most important interbad ever! Society and industry are being reorganised in new ways at present. It is already being said that the corona crisis will signal the turn of a new era. This means that the participants in the pool and bath industry will also have to fundamentally adopt a new position at times.”

LAS VEGAS SHOW CONFIRMS ITS GO-AHEAD BUT WITH A NUMBER OF CHANGES If it pertains to outdoor living, you’ll find it at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo, co-located with DeckExpo. While maintaining its position as the largest exhibit of pool and spa products, the PSP Expo/DeckExpo has expanded to include products like BBQs, outdoor structures, casual furniture, lighting and more. The good news is the team behind the event – one of the industry’s premier market places for education, networking and business – has confirmed that the 2020 edition will continue as planned. The event will be hosted in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and will follow a newly developed set of strict health and safety measures developed by Informa, which produces the event. The PSP Expo/DeckExpo will appear a bit different than usual as organiers will be employing Informa AllSecure – a set of standards developed by organiser Informa – which produces more than 500 large-scale branded and transaction-oriented events in addition to PSP Expo/DeckExpo. Informa AllSecure employs the highest standards of safety, hygiene, cleanliness and quality for operating events. These recently published measures are in addition to advice from government and local authorities. “We would not hold an event that we felt would risk the health or safety of our attendees,” explained Ray Giovine, Group Director at Informa. “We do expect a more subdued event, but still one of high quality. We’re hearing from our exhibitors that they are having a banner year and want to carry through the momentum to 2021. And with the addition of DeckExpo, our attendees

56 June 2020 SPN 55-57_SPN_June_20_Events_Roundup.indd 56

will have a more comprehensive selection of products and technology for outdoor living.” Commitments remain firm for several key manufacturers who use the event to meet builders, retailers and service technicians. “The response to AllSecure from our customers has been largely positive, instilling confidence we are making the right decision,” said Giovine. “We look forward to being the first event to bring the industry back together, close out an impressive year in 2020, and to kick off the 2021 outdoor living season.”

HOT TUBS AND MORE AT HOLIDAY PARK & RESORT INNOVATION SHOW Despite the Coronavirus situation, British holiday resorts have seen a huge surge in interest since the relaxing of guidance as many families who would normally book an overseas holiday now look to spend time in the UK. In order to offer the best possible experience and maximise on the interest from the UK public, many destinations will need to find new ways to separate themselves from the increasing competition. Enter Holiday Park & Resort Innovation – Europe’s leading market place for owners,

managers and entrepreneurs to source the very best advice, services, information and products needed to transform their business into the perfect holiday getaway for both UK residents and tourists from further afield. Taking place in November, the industry’s leading experts and most innovative suppliers will come under one roof at Birmingham’s NEC to provide forward-thinking holiday businesses with everything needed to enthrall and entertain their guests all year round… and keep them coming back for more. This year, the show is laying on a Business Growth Hub which is designed to assist leisure, hospitality and tourism businesses with the products and services they need in order to be ready for the resurgence and growth of the industry after COVID-19. Organisers aim to provide visitors with everything that’s needed to provide a holiday park with the boost it needs to be ready for when these uncertain times have passed. In addition to the Business Growth Hub, a comprehensive schedule of industry speakers offers unrivalled insight into every aspect of the holiday business sector – helping owners and operators to put, and keep, their holiday parks or resorts firmly on the map. A number of speakers from the wet leisure sector have already confirmed their attendance at this year’s show and they will cover a number of

DATES OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED FOR PISCINE GLOBAL IN LYON Exhibition organisers GL Events have confirmed that Piscine Global Europe will go ahead as planned in Lyon this coming November. Florence Mompo, Divisional Director at GL Events said: “Piscine Global Europe has been the leading event on the international pool market for many years. It has become a major gathering for all players in the pool and spa sector that they cannot afford to miss. Our duties as a fellow player on this market include helping it get back to business, and showcasing the innovations that will shape the future. Our expertise in event organisation and the changing economic conditions strengthened our conviction that the exhibition had to go ahead. It will continue serving all the players in the swimming pool world – that is the very reason why it exists, and the primary motivation behind what we are doing today!” Piscine Global Europe is adapting to exceptional circumstances and this year’s exhibition will obviously be very different from previous ones. As arguably the world’s leading exhibition for the wet leisure sector, the team behind

Piscine Global Europe are keen to ensure the event will remain a forum for doing business, building relationships and showcasing innovation. They accept that the world has changed and the onus is on them to adapt, be flexible and break new ground, but they are committed to that, and the vision is shared by the entire GL Events team. The staff behind the exhibition have been hard at work for several weeks, rethinking solutions and coming up with new ideas geared more closely to the current context. As of mid June, more than 440 companies had registered to exhibit at the biennial event and prior to many governments announcing the relaxing of border restrictions, more than 90% of international visitors from 2018 had confirmed that they intended to return to this year’s event and over the coming months, GL Events plan to step up and strengthen their communications with visitors.

SOMETHING FOR THE INDUSTRY TO LOOK FORWARD TO With current events escalating shortly after the conclusion of this year’s SPATEX, the timing of the annual show, which returns to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena in February next year, could not be more perfect. Organisers of the event have been working hard throughout the lockdown and SPATEX 2021 is set to score a hat trick! Firstly, it will be an opportunity for the industry to

come together and celebrate the Exhibition’s 25th anniversary in what promises to be a very special edition. Secondly, SPATA will be celebrating its 60th anniversary (including its time as the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) and thirdly, BISHTA will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. The launch in June of a new website heralded the start of the SPATEX 2021 campaign. Featuring exciting new images and graphics, it is stuffed full of interesting information, including an up to date listing of exhibiting companies. The details of seminar and ISPE Workshop topics will be added later in the year. It would seem nothing will deter the loyal followers of SPATEX either and the organising team is delighted to report that sales for exhibition space for the 2021 Show are currently on a par with previous years’ figures. Show Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “At the time of going to press, over 70% of space for the 2021 exhibition has already been sold. It is heartening to see how our loyal exhibitors have kept faith with the Show. It furthermore reveals the fabulous level of optimism in the industry that things will shortly get back to a new normal. “SPATEX 2021 will be the first opportunity for the industry to come together as one. We intend to make the 2021 Show a bumper event and a celebration for all in the wet leisure industry and beyond and make it as inclusive as possible. To that end, we are planning some extra special events to set this next edition apart from all that has gone before. We hope you will join us in this celebration.”

WATER HEATING OPTIONS

Products That Are Taking The Chill Out Of Pool Water Heat pumps are a popular choice for warming the waters of swimming pools in the UK, but there are a number of alternative products available which can also perform the task. The effectiveness varies with each solution, but whether it’s gas, electric or solar powered, the range of water heating options mean there’s something for all types of pools and budgets. In this issue, we take a look at a range of products within the sector By Jon Wadeson

hen it comes to the heating of water in swimming pools in the UK, there really is a wide choice of options available to suit an equally varied number of pool types and environments. Whilst environmental systems and heat pumps provide some of the latest sophisticated technologies to meet the needs of many pool owners, boilers, electric options and solar power all play their part in the heating mix, and in doing so, offer flexibility for the many pool environments that exist across the country. So whether it’s for a large, frequently used swimming pool or for a garden splasher that’s used for only a short spell during the summer months, in this issue we take a closer look at some of the non heat pump options that are warming up the waters of pools up and down the UK.

EFFICIENT WATER HEATING FROM GOLDEN COAST Get fast and effective pool heating with the Pahlén range of electric heaters from Golden Coast. With a Thermoplastic body and Incoloy 825 heating elements, the Pahlén Spa Heater has capacities of 1.5-3kW, making it suitable for small pools, spas and hot tubs. The range also includes Pahlén Compact and Thermoplastic Heaters, which can be fitted with Incoloy 825 elements, or titanium elements if there is a high risk of corrosion, e.g. with saltwater pools. Both heaters are equipped with an integral thermostat (0°C -

45°C), overheating cut out and flow switch for easy, safe operation. Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast said: “Swedish manufacturer Pahlén offers reliable, electric heaters that are costeffective and high quality. Whether you’re heating an above or below-ground pool, there is something in the range for everyone.” Also available are Pahlén swimming pool heat exchangers, which can be connected to sources such as boilers, heat pumps or solar panel systems. Cross flow operation enables high output and exceptional heat transfer. The Pahlén Maxi-Flo is a tube heat exchanger that offers capacities of 40-117kW, and is suitable for installations that operate under high pressure. It is made of acid-proof stainless steel and can be easily installed using adjustable stainless steel attachments. For extra durability, the Hi-Temp spiral heat exchanger is made of thermoplastic with a high glass content and a coil of acid-proof stainless steel. In addition Golden Coast provides Bowman heat exchangers, which are extremely efficient due to the large number of heat transfer tubes. Bowman heat exchangers for solar panels are designed to work with the lower temperature water of solar heating panels, while maximising the effectiveness of the pool’s solar connectors.

pre-set and controlled with the push of a button. A digital display indicates the water temperature, and five LED lights provides owners and users with a system status, letting them know if the heater needs service. The easy-to-view, rotating digital display places controls front and centre, no matter how the MasterTemp heater is positioned. On the outside the unit’s tough, rustproof composite exterior handles the heat and weathers the elements. The product’s compact design and super-quiet operation won’t intrude on poolside leisure time either. Inside, the heavy-duty (HD) unit with cupronickel exchanger stands up to the harshest of applications, like low pH, high flow or heavy use. All MasterTemp models offer 82% thermal efficiency – the highest in its class – making these heaters extremely economical to operate. If a pool heater is more than five years old, chances are a MasterTemp heater could quickly pay for itself in utility bill savings. Completing the product’s eco-friendly credentials, the MasterTemp heater is certified for low NOx emissions and outperforms industry standards.

TLS HEAT EXCHANGERS INCLUDE ‘GREEN’ CREDENTIALS With the emphasis on sustain ability these days, heat exchangers from Thermic Leisure Supplies (TLS) are manufactured from 95% recycled materials. Plate heat exchangers consist of thin, corrugated plates packed inside a frame, with the product in alternate channels, and service fluid in between product channels. The compactly designed TLS plate heat exchangers range consists of a number of herringbone patterned, pressed heat transfer plates. These are assembled in an inverse formation to create two sets of parallel channels, one for each liquid. Since the herringbone patterns point in opposite directions, a large number of points of support are achieved, creating a lattice in each channel. This provides a high level of turbulence, which in turn leads to an elevated rate of heat transfer. Benefits of the TLS heat exchanger include:

and walls. It is extremely resistant to salt and sea water plus chlorinated swimming pool water as well as to the UV radiation of the sun. In contrast to rubber-like competing products, SOLAR-RIPP® is resistant to under-pressure issues and rodent bites so can therefore easily be laid on the ground. The large hose inner diameter reduces the pressure loss and eliminates a blockage even after years of use. The ribbed surface increases the heatabsorbing surface by three times and gaps between the individual solar tubes contribute to the resistance to wind and storms.

GAS OR ELECTRIC? THE CHOICE IS YOURS WITH CERTIKIN As you would expect from the market leaders, Certikin have a range of heating options for any size of pool, whether that be indoor or outdoor, commercial or domestic. Certikin are renowned for their oil and gas boilers, and with the latter, the Genie range of gas condensing pool heaters are one of

the world’s only condensing pool heaters. An efficient water to water heat exchanger with cupro-nickel tubes ensures long lasting durability even on salt chlorinated pools and rapid transfer of heat into the pool water. A precise and clean burn is guaranteed every time due to the perfect air/fuel mixture managed by state-of-the-art controls. Condensing technology allows the Genie to perform at 94% efficiency ensuring that the heat goes into the pool water, not into the air. As a comparison, standard direct fired pool heaters typically operate at between 60 to 80%. Certikin oil fired heaters are the only dedicated oil-fired swimming pool boilers on the market. They have been designed and manufactured to provide both ease of installation, and highly efficient, reliable performance. The heaters come complete, pre-plumbed and pressure tested resulting in ease of installation and peace of mind for the customer. T

iling is still seen by many as the superior finish for swimming pools and spas, however, good looks and opportunities for numerous inspired designs form just part of the picture. Conventionally the preferred choice in most commercial applications, tiled finishes are now also much sought after on the domestic front too. Available in glass, stone, ceramic and porcelain and in multiple sizes, pool, spas and other wet leisure facilities can be easily customised to fit in with their surroundings whilst still retaining their own personal design if that’s what is required. When correctly cared for a tiled pool or spa will offer many years of use and with so many effective water treatments available, keeping the tiles in tiptop condition has never been easier. So with products and trends constantly evolving, in this edition, we look at the latest in materials and styles that are available for pools, spas and more this year.

INNOVATION AND RENOVATIONS FROM CERAMIQUE INTERNATIONALE According to Cameron Fraser, Director of Ceramique Internationale, owners and designers are now looking beyond mosaics and blue tiles for residential and spa pool projects and want something more personal – something that is now much easier with the latest in tiling innovations. “Many want bespoke designs in the pool tank, that express their individual tastes through contemporary colours and textures,” he said. “However, while the use of glass mosaics in varying hues of cobalt and turquoise is traditional and remains on the radar, in recent years we have seen a move towards a sleeker aesthetic for pools in both domestic and spa environments. “This is created by using large format porcelain tiles with stone-effect and natural effects. The same range is used for the pool tank, steps and surround – using more texture where required – achieving a visually appealing, seamless finish. The use of large format tiles creates the feeling of space and, thanks to new innovations in technology, there is a now a much wider selection of stunning porcelain tiles with high anti-slip ratings available, replicating a range of natural stone, limestone and even wood, allowing domestic pools to achieve the same look and safety standards as spas and leisure centres but with a bit more style. The new anti-slip technology also allows for easy cleaning of the tiles – two opposing features until now,” he added.

Italian manufacturer Casalgrande Padana’s Bios Antibacterial® HYDROTECT collection of certified environmentally-friendly tiles contains innovative properties which spark a series of chemical and biological reactions that are capable of diminishing bacteria, pollutants and traces of dirt or impurities on its slabs. The HYDROTECT® technology uses titanium dioxide properties, which react with harmful substances and bacteria to eliminate them. It also prevents bad odours as its antibacterial properties don’t need light to be activated and the presence of moisture – which is usually a breeding ground for bacteria growth – actually helps the technology to work more effectively to fight the formation of mould and fungus making it ideal for swimming pools.

Tiling can make or break a pool project. Not only is it important for the structure and formation of the pool, but it is also significant to the overall aesthetic and style. Whether it is a sleek modern design or more traditional pool design, porcelain works perfectly with any desired look and feel. Key characteristics of porcelain are that it is both highly sustainable and has a slipresistant finish, making it ideal for pool lining. A versatile material, porcelain is also stunning when used for the pool surround too, to give a modern sleek and continuous finish. Porcelain not only creates a beautiful and superior finish to a project, but it is also stain resistant, highly durable, resistant to moss and mould, and is easy to keep clean. Porcelain tiles are made from a mix of natural clay and finely ground sand, which is then pressed and fired at a very high temperature. Each design is baked onto the body of the surface of the tile, to produce natural-looking tiles, along with the benefits of longevity and practicality. Porcelain is a very versatile material and can be used for both indoor and outdoor pools. To get a contemporary feel use the tile with a honed surface and combine with a matching grip finish, perfect for internal steps and surrounds. Porcelain can also transform a pool simply by the colour used within the design. With so many colours and shades, porcelain can alter the look of the pool through its reflection in the water. Whether it’s the appearance of the crystal-clear turquoise seas of the Mediterranean, a tranquil mid-blue colourisation, or the dark, novel and dramatic colours popular in contemporary designs, porcelain truly bring creations to life. Cranbourne Stone has a large portfolio of beautiful porcelain for pool lining and This outdoor pool was finished using Cranborne Stone’s porcelain tiles creating a Mediterranean aura of crystal-clear turquoise water

Conventionally the preferred choice in most commercial applications, tiled finishes are now also much sought after on the domestic front too” VITRA – A LEADING NAME FOR POOL TILING VitrA Tiles is a well-known brand in dozens of countries internationally and in the last couple of years has been offering all the benefits of its extensive fully-vitrified tile range to UK customers too. VitrA Tiles specialises in the manufacture of tiles for all areas of the wet leisure market. All products for UK distribution are available for immediate delivery via the company’s network

of distribution partners. The tiling range for swimming pools includes VitrA ProColor. These tiles are developed for the swimming pool market based on 38 different colours of the RAL colour matching system. This means they can be coordinated with tiling on all aspects of a leisure project from pool tank to foyers and changing rooms. Modularity is another key feature of the range, giving swimming pool designers the maximum flexibility in

CASE STUDY CERAMIQUE INTERNATIONALE SUPPLY FAMILY POOL INSPIRATION Adam Collins was looking for something a ‘bit special’ rather than just plain blue for the tank of the indoor pool which was under construction at his home in Hertfordshire. The pool was to be housed in a brandnew building so internal walls, the pool surround and the changing rooms all required inspiration in ceramics, as Adam wanted his personal taste to be expressed in bold dramatic contrasts of contemporary colour and textures. With a young family, the need for cleanliness and safety were also important. Adam’s choice for the pool tank was a new range of iridescent glass mosaics combining strong cobalt and turquoise hues with a metallic lustre. Bios antibacterial tiles from Casalgrande Padana

used for the pool surround have elements harmless to humans incorporated within the body of the tile during production which last forever and provide 99.9% guaranteed protection against the four main bacterial strains, so provided a perfect way to protect Adam’s friends and family.

As well as a built in TV, Adam wanted a striking decorative feature on the wall and so chose dark, bold chocolate-brown Emperador tiles, in large format 60 x 120cm and with a hammered surface texture, which were laid landscape, and combined it with a classical Botticino ivory for the decorative features. The decorative elements included a five square metre area of unique mosaic, made up of 1cm x 30cm strips in three alternating textures of glossy, mat and hammered. These strips also ran horizontally between the large chocolate tiles to add further decoration.

OPINION

Concern About The Present And Confusion About The Future

“COVID-19 has infected and affected almost the entire world. At the moment our only way of fighting back is by standing together and staying apart but everyone’s experience of the disease and its consequences is unique and individual and it’s important to realise that.” Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast, reflects on the impact of the Coronavirus situation and more

e clap for carers, we queue outside supermarkets and we do our business by Zoom. The world has changed almost beyond measure and yet these things, and many, many others, seem normal to us and have become a part of the everyday because it seems that everyone is doing them. And in many ways, that’s how it should be. We look after each other, we protect each other and we care for each other. But in telling the story of the disease in these broad strokes we can sometimes forget that that wider picture is made up of individuals.

Nature, it seems, is enjoying us taking a breather from polluting the planet. The hedgerows are alive with insects and the skies are full of swifts and swallows performing aerobatic feats to pluck those insects out of the air. Carbon emissions have fallen by roughly 17% as a result of lockdown measures and there is a lot of support to build a more sustainable future as we emerge from the restrictions. It has certainly shown all of us, both individuals and businesses, that life can function with far fewer miles being driven or flown.

64 DAYS. 261,184 CASES. 36,914 LIVES AS AT 26/05/20

In the same way that COVID-19 has affected individuals in both common and unique ways, so will it and the effects of lockdown impact differently on individual businesses. We are all being told to prepare for the new normal, but if anyone actually knows what that will be, I would be very surprised. Where we are now is a form of economic limbo. Furloughed workers, shuttered high streets and a closed leisure and travel industry; nothing is as it was or as it will be. Certainly some businesses won’t survive and it is just as certain that some will profit hugely but it’s difficult to foretell what will happen to whom. In America there has been a boom in above-ground pools and hot dog sales have grown by 29%. Here we have seen increased interest in pool kits at Golden Coast but I wouldn’t particularly recommend anyone to invest in a hot dog business!

Never has the media been so full of graphs and charts, statistics and data. We live in a world where we check the R-number everyday, where we understand that what we are trying to do is to flatten the curve. But statistics aren’t the story and numbers don’t tell the narrative. Perhaps describing all nurses and care workers as angels puts added pressure on people who are struggling to do their job in horrific circumstances and under an endless burden. To always behave like an angel under those conditions would certainly be too much for me. Being told that ‘we are all in this together’ is absolutely right, it also points to a view of the world that puts the importance of the herd above that of the individual, where as the truth is that both are equally important. If the strange circumstances of this postCOVID world were to be inflicted on one individual we would understand that they were frightened, lonely, nervous and confused. When we are a part of a society suffering this way, we

A HEALTHY BUSINESS perhaps find it harder to forgive others, and ourselves, when we feel this way.

MASKS AND BRAVE FACES If we are to come out of lockdown, I think we will have to add mask wearing to hand washing and social distancing but we find masks emotive and confusing. Culturally we aren’t happy about seeing masked faces in public and for women in particular, masks make them feel uncomfortable. There are macho issues too about hiding behind a piece of folded material and Trump has even described them as ‘un-manly’. (Unlike injecting yourself with bleach presumably.) But if our businesses and our public transport system are to return to any sort of previous normalcy, then I think we are going to have to put a brave face behind the mask.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY We’ve all come to terms with fact that our industry is ‘solar powered’; that the weather makes all the difference, and as such we are all overly conscious of the weather, particularly at the start of the season. It is such a cruel irony that this spring has been so glorious but I’m also sure that sunshine and blue skies have made the last few months more bearable. I count myself lucky in as much that I live in a fairly rural, coastal part of the country.

STAY ALERT As the graph flattens and the R-number falls, the UK will get back to business and I see a healthy future for our industry. Social distancing may well remain for a considerable time, borders may stay closed and flying expensive. All that might help the wet leisure industry, but we will have to watch for pitfalls as well as opportunities. Best of luck and stay safe. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
