SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.

this country can get. We explore what’s new in the above-ground pools market, a sector that’s coming under pressure from other wet leisure options but one that is so important at providing back garden memories for many families throughout the (hopefully warm) summer months ahead.

Editor and Co Publisher: Jon Wadeson Features: Karen Witney

We’ve also an in depth look at the latest efficient and environmentally friendly heat pumps that are on the market – products that will definitely take the chill out of the water on grey days and which can extend the season for pool and spa owners and operators alike.

For an industry which on the whole, is still reliant on a spell of decent weather to kick start the season into life, the last couple of months haven’t been particularly great news, but the weather seems to be slowly but surely changing for the better. What has proved more of a challenge for UK industry as a whole has been the ongoing saga of Brexit along with the changing political landscape here in the UK and also arguably around the world too. The lack of a solution or any clarity regarding our withdrawal from the EU is clearly not assisting businesses or the wider general public with their planning for the months and years ahead, and it’s something which is definitely now having a knock on effect to confidence and therefore spending. Worse still, various trade disputes have also been in the news for a number of weeks now so the perfect storm of poor sentiment especially for consumers seems to have crept up on us all. I’m really hoping things both on the weather and political fronts become much more settled and improve soon – clearly it will be the weather that takes the lead in that regard. Concentrating on this edition, we’ve products that are suitable for many of the types of unpredictable weather conditions

Fabulous and hardwearing tiling and mosaic solutions also have the spotlight upon them this issue plus we’ve a feature on the use of hot tubs in non-domestic settings, in particular in holiday parks, lodges and cottage rentals. This covers a number of products that are making their operation significantly easier. Trade events, both in the UK and around the world, are also looked at as we round up what’s on and where over the coming months. And as if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams looks at the issue of fairness while the STA highlight a new Pool Water Management Quality Mark launched by Quest. There’s also useful further information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So, that’s this latest issue of SPN broken down – as ever, I hope you enjoy reading it over the summer.

Devin Play Their Part In Traditional Seaside Themed Project At Butlin’s Devin Consulting was thrilled to be appointed to this prestigious project for Bourne Leisure’s Butlin’s at Bognor Regis. The design was based around a traditional British seaside theme which is carried through the seven different rides, flumes and water features. Devin worked alongside Lavington’s and PWP Architects during the course of this project; their role as aquatic consultants included the design and specification of the pool water treatment systems, the pool water features and slides’ hydraulics, and site monitoring of installation and commissioning. The new pool is 6,300m² and is able to welcome up to 950 guests at any one time! Bourne Leisure has invested £40m into the creation of this new attraction which includes seven rides, and features the only Helter Skelter water slide in the world – users slide down it before making a splash into the plunge pool below. The Seaside Garden Rapids takes users on a journey with a choice of slides heading back to the main pool. The Stick of Rock Slide allows four bathers to race each other down the shutes to the rock archway below and into the main pool – time it right and users could find themselves plunged into the waves which operate frequently. Quieter zones include a lido area for swimming with beach huts and sun loungers for relaxing. Little ones are well catered for in the Seaside Playground area

dedicated to children up to age five. A great feature is that this facility is accessible to all with level access at all entry and exit points and availability of a wet wheelchair, ramped beach access into the water, and a portable hoist to access the lido. The new facility provides an environment of family fun activities with excellent air and water quality.

SPATEX Launches An Important Industry Initiative Using some of the profits raised from its annual Exhibition, SPATEX is launching a Foundation – a major new initiative to provide funding for the benefit of all in the wet leisure industry. SPATEX Director, Chris Hayes, said: “I am delighted to announce that SPATEX is leading the way in launching this important Industry enterprise. SPATEX has raised and distributed over a staggering £1.6m in its 24 year history. The establishment of the Foundation is a more formalised way of distributing these funds and is open to everyone in the industry who can demonstrate a reasonable case for funding. We welcome applications from all individuals, companies and bodies.” The directors of SPATEX, the UK’s only dedicated wet leisure Show, have identified four categories for which applications are invited: • Training (e.g. – work on developing a suitable industry course or a bursary to undertake a relevant course to become a tutor). • Education (e.g. to develop a course, or to provide materials for the benefit of the industry).

4 June 2019 SPN 4-9_SPN_June_19_News_General.indd 4

• Research (e.g. a response to multi-agency groups to contribute towards the cost of research to benefit the industry). • Other Support (this category covers any other possible bids that might be submitted by groups or individuals). So, how is an application made? The SPATEX Foundation is overseen by the SPATEX directors and applications can be made throughout the year using the Foundation form available from the SPATEX office. Subject to the committee’s approval, the awarding of monies may either be immediate or subject to a delay while the funds are topped up from the profits of future SPATEX shows. Where Outdoor Living Comes to Life

NEWS PLANS FOR SEAFRONT OUTDOOR POOL IN BRIGHTON APPROVED Proposals to build an outdoor swimming pool on Brighton beach were unanimously approved by local councillors in April. The facility – known as Sea Lanes – was given temporary permission for five years by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Planning Committee. The development will provide a 25m open air heated swimming pool, which will be accessible to all, but the long-term plan is to deliver a 50m pool that will become recognised as the national open water swimming centre. Speaking about the approval, Joe McNulty, Sea Lanes Brighton Director, said: “We are delighted that Brighton & Hove City Council has granted us permission to go ahead with the first phase of our plans. Sea Lanes will benefit the local community by providing an heated outdoor pool open all year round that will introduce people to sea safety and provide Brighton with much needed additional swimming pool space.”

SCHOOL’S BID TO BUILD POOL TURNED DOWN BY COUNCIL A Surrey school wanting to build a swimming pool to help meet the needs of the national curriculum and teach its pupils to swim has had its plans turned down by Woking Borough Council’s planning committee. Beaufort Primary School was refused planning permission to build the new 25 metre pool and gymnasium which many parents had backed as the school is located close to a lake and canal, therefore teaching children how to be safe in and around water was essential. But residents living nearby said they were worried the new facility would impact parking and traffic in the neighbouring roads because it was planned to be used for commercial customers outside of school hours.

Panda Pod Provides Ideal Access Solution At University Of Sheffield Pool After years of use, the University of Sheffield’s Sport Sheffield facility needed a new access solution for their swimming pool as their old hydraulic hoist was showing signs of corrosion. The traditional pool, which measures around 33 metres long and has a deep end of 4 metres, has ladder steps with handrails either end of the pool and is used daily by students and the public for wet leisure activities. David Hallman Ltd, who provide maintenance for the pool, were asked by the University’s Water Compliance Manager to source a pool lift solution which would meet the University’s requirements for a portable solution which could be independently controlled by a user. After contacting The Pool Lift Company, the Panda Pod, a top of the range, fully motorised mobile lift with automatic traction was recommended. The unique electric propulsion system, similar to a powered pallet truck, means swimmers can be transported effortlessly from the changing room to the poolside by an operator. Once the Panda Pod is in position at the poolside, the chair can be lowered into the water either by an attendant operating the controls on the lift control panel or by the user themselves by means of the optional hand control. The Panda Pod has a maximum arm travel of 1,500 mm and is therefore suitable for the

dropped water level. The product also met the University’s requirement for a mobile solution which can be easily stored and could still be used in the event of future upgrades like a new deck level pool. Sport Sheffield are looking forward to improving the experience it offers to any swimmers with mobility issues, thanks to the new Panda Pod. The Pool Lift Company 01256 896000 www.poollifts.co.uk

There Was A Buzz Of Excitement At Stoneworld During Spring! The masonry workshop at Stoneworld in Oxfordshire has been a hive of activity during the first quarter of 2019. Ever on the look out for technological developments in the stone industry, Stoneworld has leapt at the opportunity to seal its position as one of the most advanced masonry workshops in the UK. Stoneworld masonry workshop has undergone an ambitious overhaul of their already highly automated factory in rural Oxfordshire. New for 2019, Stoneworld have invested in the GMM Intra520 CNC 5 axis sawing machine. This new machine will enable the masonry workshop to programme in precision cutting work in a highly automated way, enabling a faster through put

of work. This new investment advances Stoneworld’s supremacy in stone fabrication techniques, adding another impressive machine to their stable of hi tech workhorses. Since the start, in 2001, Stoneworld has striven to be ‘the’ place for all stone needs. Initially supplying high quality landscaping materials, Stoneworld quickly evolved, offering bespoke stone services to many sectors including architects and developers, garden designers, pool designers, sculptors and more. A major breakthrough came in 2008 when Stoneworld’s forward thinking saw them become one of very few businesses to invest in Robostone’s Digital Carving Robot. The huge investment paid off, with the securing of

many highly specialised contracts from the world of architecture and sculpture. Further investment followed with the addition of the ground breaking Evolution X5 Water Jet Cutter, capable of extreme precision cutting on a 3D axis. This investment set Stoneworld way ahead of competitors in stone fabrication. Stoneworld’s continued investments enable them to tender for ever more exciting and challenging projects, and this in turn helps them to attract the best workers in the trade. NEWS GLASGOW POOL OPENS AFTER IMPROVEMENT WORKS There’s a fresh new look at Kilsyth Swimming Pool in Glasgow following an extensive three month refurbishment. Operator NL Leisure invested over £330,000 in the venue, making significant improvements throughout. As well as work to the building, the swimming pool and changing village was completely upgraded and the reception area has been modernised. Emma Walker, Managing Director of NL Leisure, said: “We’re delighted that Kilsyth Swimming Pool has now fully reopened after extensive improvement works. “The pool is an excellent community asset and the significant amount of money invested reaffirms our commitment to helping more people get more active more often.”

LONDON HYDROTHERAPY POOL FACES CLOSURE Patients, carers and GPs are demanding an NHS Trust re-think its decision to close a hydrotherapy pool which is vital in helping people recover from surgery. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is holding a consultation about plans to close the facility, and replace the service it provides with land-based therapies. After many years of operation, the hydrotherapy pool is now in poor condition, making it very difficult to meet modern health and safety standards. Located at Charing Cross Hospital, the facility has been beset by maintenance problems, which has led to repeated unplanned closures, often at short notice and for prolonged periods, affecting patients’ quality of care and causing inconvenience to all users. The pool is mainly used for patients recovering from surgery including hip and knee operations and people have to be referred by a specialist. Patients with chronic pain, rheumatology conditions, back and neck pain and soft tissue injuries also use the facility.

Filtration A Key Consideration On Award-winning Pool Essex-based Centurion Leisure were recently awarded a Bronze in the muchcoveted Special Requirement Pool of the Year category at the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards for this purpose-built pool in Laindon, Basildon. The project was for the SwimMania swimming school and filtration was a key aspect for it. With this in mind, Centurion selected the two Alpine Plus 1200 diameter filters pre-loaded with OC-1 media to obtain high standards of filtration coupled with the ease of installation with a pre-loaded filter. The feedback of performance from swimming teachers, the owner and the pool’s users has been nothing but positive. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson, said: “OC-1 represents the greatest advance in swimming pool filtration in the 21st century. Unlike traditional entrapment methods, British manufactured OC-1 works through settlement and harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers. Reduced energy and water consumption (thus less chemicals and heating) coupled with 20 times greater debris collection compared to sand or glass, makes it the filtration of choice. It is light to handle, easy to install, low in maintenance and has a typical payback of just 12 months.” Centurion’s Managing Director George Clifton commented: “I am very impressed with how OC-1 filtration has transformed the working of this pool.

I am amazed at just how efficiently it works and the results it achieves. I think it justifies the title of a revolutionary product.” Two filters, specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 media for both domestic and commercial installations, are available. The Commercial version can be supplied complete with the OC-1 media already preloaded and allows quicker installation and avoids having to load sand or glass into the tanks on site. Leading British Holiday Company Invests In Pool Safety Bourne Leisure, one of the largest providers of holidays and holiday home ownership in the UK, has bought dozens of Pool Rescue Manikins to help train its lifeguards. The revolutionary dummies will be used to train over 500 lifeguards at 57 of their sites around the country. Bourne Leisure welcomes more than 4 million families to their parks, resorts and hotels every year. Their brands, which include Butlin’s, Haven Holidays and Warner Leisure Hotels, are amongst the most respected within the UK holiday market. The first of a series of training days for 60 of the company’s managers was held at Thoresby Hall in Nottingham, where the team were introduced to the manikins. The Pool Rescue Manikins are

the latest rescue training dummies to be launched by Ruth Lee Ltd. They were developed with assistance from the water safety charity The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and have been tested extensively by RLSS UK trained lifeguards. The 30kg manikins provide a realistic tool for lifeguards to simulate the rescue of a real person who is potentially drowning. They can be thrown into a pool where they quickly sink to the bottom but retain enough buoyancy to be towed effectively. Craig Valentine, Health and Safety Manager for Bourne Leisure, which has purchased 38 Pool Rescue Manikins, said: “As a company we pride ourselves on maintaining the safety of our

guests and our people who use and work in our facilities. “We operate 130 swimming pools around the country and it is vital that our lifeguards train on the most cutting edge technology that is available. The Pool Rescue Manikins appealed to us because they are so realistic and we can use them in place of human volunteers in a variety of emergency pool scenarios.” Ruth Lee Ltd 01490 413282 www.ruthlee.co.uk

Olympic Gold Medallist, Rebecca Adlington Opens School’s New Pool

Wates Appointed To Deliver Commonwealth Games Aquatic Centre Wates Construction has been appointed as the design and construction partner for the new £60m Aquatics Centre in Smethwick for Sandwell Council – a site that will help to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The centre’s wet leisure facilities include a 50m Olympic-sized competition swimming pool, a 25m diving pool and a studio pool along with 1,000 spectator seats. Four thousand temporary seats will also be used for the Games. The contractor and Council have been working in partnership to develop the construction programme and design for the new state-of-theart facility, bringing modern leisure facilities to the town. Wates was appointed via Major Works – UK, part of the Scape National Construction framework. Based just four miles away in Quinton, Wates Construction has committed to using its role on the project as a force for good by providing significant economic and social benefits to Sandwell’s businesses and residents. The contractor is already in the process of engaging a local supply chain and creating a comprehensive employment and training plan. Plans for Sandwell Aquatics Centre were approved by the Council’s planning committee earlier in the year and ratified at a full Council meeting in April. John Carlin, Regional Managing Director, Wates Construction Midlands, commented: “It is a huge privilege to be appointed as the design and construction partner for this important community facility for Smethwick. “As a locally-based company, we’re extremely excited to be part of the area’s changing landscape but more importantly, we’re working hard to create a lasting legacy. We’re committed to delivering an exemplary project that creates a tangible economic and social impact and is completed on time and to budget.”

In May, Godstowe Preparatory School’s brand new swimming pool was officially opened by Olympic gold medallist swimmer, Rebecca Adlington OBE. Rebecca gave an inspiring talk to the pupils and answered questions at the Buckinghamshire-based school, before cutting the ribbon. An impressed Rebecca commented: “The new pool at Godstowe is an incredible facility, and it was my absolute pleasure to spend time speaking to the pupils. It is my vision to see all children leave primary education able to swim. I am keen to share what swimming has given me in terms of confidence, teamwork and communication skills, as well as it being an important life skill in terms of safety and fitness.” Godstowe’s Headmistress, Sophie Green said: “We are absolutely delighted with the completed pool. Our pupils have enjoyed filling a time capsule to place in the under-croft and we are all very excited to see the pool in full use.” Director of Sport, Rachel Hearnshaw and Pool Manager Phil Scriven are working to develop best use of the facility. In addition to school use, they are in the process of forging links with a local swimming club, whose expertise will be fed into the school squad development programme. A local swimming school will offer priority to Godstowe girls who wish to develop their swimming ability further with weekly lessons after school and at the weekend, as well as crash courses for girls who have fallen below the expected swimming ability for their age group, or who join the school in that position. Other potential ideas for development include hiring out the facility for birthday parties, events and to other water-based sports clubs. The competition-sized pool replaces the school’s outdated 1970s facility and was designed by MorseWebb Architects to meet Sport England design specifications.

Nelson Now At The Helm For Certikin Commercial And Export Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson, has taken on the additional responsibility of managing the company’s thriving Export division which services over 50 countries around the world. Steve succeeds from International Business Manager, Jon Maskell who has taken up a new appointment with OCM Products, which is a joint venture between Fluidra, Certikin’s parent company and Evolution Aqua. OCM is most notable for bringing the ground-breaking OC-1 Filtration Media to market three years ago and most recently, the new Purge filter. As Certikin is the exclusive distributor of both of these products Jon, who has worked at Certikin for 18 years, will not be severing ties altogether. Steve, who has held the position of Commercial Manager for over ten years, and also heads up Certikin’s flourishing Aquatic business, joined the company in 2003. Working in the Pools division, he gained extensive knowledge in

the domestic wet leisure sector so, when combined with his commercial experience, he brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. Steve said: “I love the variety of my job as no two projects are the same. One minute I am dealing with a small hotel pool; then a high-end commercial bespoke sauna and the next it’s a water flume for a large commercial pool. I am delighted to add the overseeing of the Export division to my duties. Whilst it is a challenging role, I regard it as an extension of my current duties but on a larger scale. With the support of the highly experienced Commercial and Export teams, I am confident that both divisions will continue to go from strength to strength.” Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

Ron Rolfe, who founded Oakleigh Park School of Swimming with his wife Pamela, passed away peacefully on 14 March. Speaking about his father, Jonathan Rolfe said: “The passion of swimming my Dad had goes through my family. He truly taught us what a lovely sport and exercise it is. As he said – I am a good advert for swimming – he was right, he swam every day and reached the grand age of 87.” A well-known industry figure, Ron became a member of the Finchley School of Swimming & Lifesaving in the 1950’s and was one of the few that received the RLSS Diploma. After meeting Pamela at the club, they both then took it on and ran it. They then started the Wood Green swimming Club and eventually running Church Farm Swimming pool for 30 years as well as Mattison Road Pool in north London. Ron was the Haringey School swimming teacher for many years before fulfilling his dream with Pamela to build their own specifically designed teaching pool. They put everything they had to achieve this and built one of the first teaching pools in the UK. In 1975 the Whetstone pool was opened and over the years, as well as lessons, ran numerous courses and became an ATC. “From teaching since the 1950s it would be hard to say how many pupils he taught – what I can tell you is it makes us so proud as a family when we see those pupils now bring their children to Oakleigh Park,” said Jonathan. “We as a family and all in the Oakleigh Park family will miss his words of wisdom, knowledge and wit. “One thing we always joked about was when he did pass away what week would he choose – turns out it was badge week!” added Jonathan.

SCP UK Introduce New Evolution 2 Heater For 2019 Season Available through SCP UK and new for this year’s season, the Evolution 2 from Elecro provides efficiency, safety and above all reliability to heat a pool effortlessly to the desired temperature. As with all Elecro electric heaters, the Evolution 2 features Elecro’s unique coiled heating element technology, which creates a turbulent vortex in the water as it flows through the heater. The vortex has the effect of increasing the water velocity and provides two important benefits: firstly to ensure that all of the heat is efficiently transferred from the element into the water, and secondly so that no build up of mineral deposits occur, which often lead to an element’s failure. This all adds up to mean that Elecro™ electric heaters, will operate at 100% efficiency throughout their long life. Easy to install, fully equipped and prewired, the Evolution 2 features a robust, durable construction and can be floor or vertically wall mounted. Coming with either an analogue or digital encoder control, eight power options are available, ranging from 2-kW to 24-kW. Other benefits include: • Titanium or incoloy 825 heating elements • AISI 316 stainless steel or titanium flow tube • Accuracy 1.2oC for analogue and 0.5oC for digital models • Silent operation • RCD safety trip circuit. The Evolution 2 is just one of a number of Elecro pool heating products available from SCP UK, whose range also includes heat exchangers from the same brand. SCP UK 01293 546126 www.scpeurope.com

Fairlocks Introduce Fibalon – A New Kind Of Filter Media Fibalon Pool Filter Media offers an optimised, innovative and patented filter media which consists of a combination of different polymer fibres with diverse surface structures and special fibre cross sections. A deliberately chosen spherical shape maximises the filter media surface area, and the interior of the fibre ball consists of a slightly denser core and a softer wrap. The balls nestle together from a consistent filter bed. Fibalon has a number of benefits including: • Ease of handling – 350g of Fibalon replaces the equivalent 25kg of filter sand • A high dirt capacity

Fibalon Rope uses eight nets arranged like a convenient rope

• A high selectivity of 8 microns • Maintenance free and reuseable • Inhibits biofilm formation. There are three options of media type depending on the location and size of the pool or spa. Aimed at pool owners, Fibalon 3D offers a complete alternative to traditional sand filters, offers energy-savings and can be applied universally. Fibalon Rope is suitable for almost all common pool filters and utilises the innovative polymer fibre. However, handling and use is made even easier through the use of eight nets arranged like a convenient rope. Fibalon Compact is more suitable for hot tubs, whirlpools and spas where the filtration requirement is less. The material is contained in an easy to insert mesh bag and it offers a longer, more sustainable life when compared to other, more traditional cartridge filters. New Waterco Technology Helps Reduce Pool Owners’ Power Bills Waterco’s new, energy efficient Hydrochlor MK3 Mineral Chlorinator enhances chlorine production whilst reducing energy consumption, creating a pool that’s easier to maintain than a traditionally chlorinated one. Its unique Intelligent Power Pack intuitively recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. This allows customers to stock one power pack, rather than a power pack per cell – while simultaneously reducing inventory. Also, the cell housings are identical, which means that the salt cell can be easily upgraded or downgraded. “Hydrochlor features the latest Switch Mode Power technology to increase energy efficiency by over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption and therefore energy bills,” explained Tony Fisher, Waterco Europe CEO. “It also draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output.” Hydrochlor’s automated self-cleaning technology also cleverly reverses its polarity to detect and clean calcium build-up off its electrodes – a feature which helps increase the lifespan of the chlorinator and reduces the cost involved in repairing it. While the MK3 Hydrochlor works

with standard salt pools, Waterco’s engineers designed it to work in synergy with the company’s Mineral Crystals range, effectively transforming backyard pools into a therapeutic oasis. “Adding Waterco’s Mineral Crystals to pool water enables you to experience the health benefits of bathing in magnesium enriched water,” Tony explained. “Magnesium has been recognised by medical professionals and consumers all over the world for its ability to alleviate a variety of ailments relating to the skin, muscles, and nervous system.” Waterco are delighted to team up with Golden Coast for the distribution of the Hydrochlor range of Salt Mineral Chorinators within the UK swimming pool market. Coral Detection Systems Signs UK Distribution Agreement Coral Detection Systems, creator and manufacturer of the Coral Manta 3000 drowning detection system for residential pools, have recently entered into a distribution agreement with SPSC, one of the largest distributors in the UK public pool safety industry. The agreement includes distribution to a potential market of 250,000 residential swimming pools across the UK. This agreement follows a series of distribution deals and partnerships the company has reached in the United States and in member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The Coral Manta 3000’s breakthrough solar-powered Artificial Intelligence technology is able to monitor and detect movement using advanced underwater computer vision. The device is a Plug & Play system which can be self-installed, and sends smartphone notifications when anyone first enters the pool or in cases of potential drowning. In the case that the system detects an unmoving body underwater for 15 seconds, it also sounds an alarm to an on site monitor to allow for immediate response. The system is the first of its kind to detect potential cases of drowning and send alerts within seconds while operating 24/7. “We are excited to share that soon, owners

and operators of a quarter of a million pools in the UK will be able to offer children and visitors the added protection and peace of mind provided by Coral,” said Eyal Golan, CEO and Co-Founder of Coral Detection Systems. “This agreement marks another important step towards our goal of making private pools safer for individuals and families everywhere.” SPSC (UK) Ltd 0845 862 0040 www.spscuk.com

A Safe, Clean Sweep With LTP ECOPROTEC® Treatments LTP’s ECOPROTEC® range includes a variety of treatments for safe and effective maintenance of outdoor surfaces, from terrace to swimming pool surround. Spanning heavy-duty cleaners and sealers, to removers and restoration treatments, the British-made range offers a safe solution for all surface types and all products are available from UK stock. To remove dirt and slippery residues from stone and porcelain, best-selling options include ECOPROTEC® External Paving Cleaner. A viscose-type product, the cleaner clings to pavers and removes dirt, including green and dark deposits caused by plants and leaves. A bleaching action also helps restore original colour. Cleaned stone surfaces which benefit from an application of a sealant can be protected with ECOPROTEC® Natural Finish Stone Sealer. The eco-friendly, water-based impregnator

helps protect against moisture, stains, weather and efflorescence; it can be applied in damp conditions, for ease and speed. For safe removal of stains, the range includes new ECOPROTEC® Cement, Grout & Salt Residue Remover which has a noncaustic formulation. The new Residue Remover shifts grout and building residues, as well as salt marks caused by rising damp and spot fixing. It is designed to replace conventional acid and can safely be used on all types of tile and stone, except those with a polished finish. Notably, it can be used on unpolished acid-sensitive surfaces, including limestone and travertine, without any risk of etching. Also new to the range, ECOPROTEC® Blackstone Sealer & Restorer restores the appearance of faded dark pavers and provides protection against the elements. It can be used on all types of natural and artificial stone and is applied until the desired colour effect is achieved – from dark grey to ebony – and then ‘cut back’ to remove excess. MultiCyclone XL70 Reduces Backwashing And Improves Water Clarity A revolution in pool filtration, Waterco’s Commercial MultiCyclone (MC) 70XL is a brilliant pre-filtration device that pre-filters up to 80% of the incoming dirt load, reducing both the load on the main filtration system and the need for excessive backwashing. The MultiCyclone 70XL works on the basis of centrifugal water filtration and is designed with no moving parts and no filter media to clean or replace. Here’s how it works: • Incoming water enters 70 hydrocyclones tangentially, generating a strong centrifugal effect • The sediment is spun out to the hydrocyclone’s wall and then spirals down to the sediment chamber • The filtered water migrates towards the centre of the hydrocyclone where the flow reverses and spirals upwards through the outlet • Accumulation of sediment can be visibly monitored through the clear inspection pipe • To clean, simply open the purge valve. Ideal for commercial swimming pools, water features, fountains and water treatment applications, the MultiCyclone 70XL saves water, chemicals and heated water. With a glass filled, strong and durable thermoplastic housing, the 70XL’s construction also offers UV and corrosion resistance. Special features of the Commercial MultiCyclone include: • Simple installation, coming complete with 4”/110mm quick connect unions • Designed flowrate of between 36m³/hr and 90m³/hr • 70 hydrocyclones configured for optimal filtration and performance • Sediment visible through clear inspection pipe • Purge valve for quick and easy maintenance. “Only 300 litres of water are discharged to clean the MultiCyclone, which is done simply by opening the purge valve,” says Tony Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher. “The MC 70XL is a fantastic addition to any commercial application with many benefits for both the plant room operators and the environment alike.” Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

Small Pool, Big Upgrade Counter-current jets have been highlighted as the ideal addition for customers looking to upgrade their small pool, according to Golden Coast. Many pools may not be big enough to swim laps, whereas a countercurrent jet provides a dynamic alternative by creating a flow of water to swim against. Golden Coast offers three Speck BADU Jet models designed specifically for retrofitting with existing pools: Perla, Riva and Stella, offering flow rates of 40m, 54–58m and 75m per 3/hr respectively. Each of these over-the-wall units uses a powerful pump to draw water through a suction inlet and feeds a strong jet back into the pool – enabling the customer to experience the pleasures of swimming in a fulllength pool. Golden Coast Managing Director, Jamie Adams, said: “These Speck retrofit counter-current jets offer customers flexibility, by allowing them to extend the capabilities of their pool and enhance their enjoyment of it.” Streamlined and compact, the BADU Jet Perla, Riva and Stella units can be fitted with an easy-care, high quality wood-look inlay, ideal for use with wooden pools. Jamie continued: “When making enhancements to your pool it’s important to have a system that works with your current aesthetic, and a wooden inlay is a great way to blend the unit in with its surroundings.” The BADU Jet Perla, Riva and Stella models provide adjustable flow rates, directional nozzles and power controls, allowing the customer to change the settings based on their preference. The units also feature integrated LED lights available in moonlight white or multicolour, for added ambience. The BADU Jet Stella If being installed onto an aboveground pool, a telescopic support leg can be added to these models for extra stability. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

New Generation Filter Media Removes 30% More Contaminants Than Sand Waterco’s Glass Pearls are manufactured from 100% pure glass and offer much finer filtration than conventional swimming pool filter media. Their narrow 0.6mm-0.8mm particle size range provides in-depth filtration and extends operating cycles between backwashing. Suitable for both domestic and commercial swimming pools, they provide outstanding quality alongside energy and water savings. Whereas other filter media may contain a range of contaminants, Waterco’s Glass Pearls are chemically inert for superior quality. This significantly reduces initial backwashing requirements, prior to commissioning a filter, enabling a rapid start-up of media filters. The pearls operate on the basis of ‘depth filtration’ whereby dirt is driven through the filter bed and trapped in minute spaces between the particles of filter media, allowing the cleansed water to pass through. The product is safe to handle and service in comparison to other glass media options such as crushed glass. Glass pearls are spherical and do not have sharp edges, making them safe to use. In addition, if the filter’s laterals ever fail and the media flows into the pool, the beads pose no risk of injury to swimmers. “Waterco’s Glass Pearls media really is a new

generation of pool filter media that removes 30% more contaminants from the water than sand,” said Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher. “It’s manufactured from virgin glass that looks like tiny polished pearls, which are designed to reduce backwashing along with water, heating and chemical treatment costs.” Waterco Glass Pearls have a life span of approximately 20 years, are resistant to biofouling and are totally recyclable. Leading Electrochlorination System Further Proves Its Credentials

Gaffey Technical Services, which is internationally recognised for its technical and product development expertise, has revealed that its Hyprolyser® 280-2200 system is now approved under Regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000. This further acknowledges the quality of the Hyprolyser system which has already found considerable success on various water and general processing applications. The Gaffey Hyprolyser® system has been proven in commercial and municipal swimming pool, waste-water and private drinking water applications. It uses marketleading technology to generate sodium hypochlorite by applying an electrical current to a water and salt solution. This eliminates the need for chlorine to be stored

on site, and so offers a reliable, low-risk and environmentally-friendly solution for disinfecting water. “This is a significant step forward in the progress of the Hyprolyser® product range,” commented Technical Director, Andrew Gaffey. “There are over 300 systems in use around the world, including swimming pool and theme park applications such as the Edinburgh Royal Commonwealth Pool and Center Parcs in Woburn Forest. This new compliance level for use in drinking water demonstrates that our Hyprolyser® 280 – 2200 system generates a high-quality product and meets strict standards for chemical impurities and toxicology.” The Hyprolyser® produces a chlorine solution strength below 1%. This eliminates remedial chlorine injector maintenance, and the need to handle hazardous chlorine-based chemicals. The result is a low-hazard work area, simple operational requirements which can easily be handled by non-technical staff, plus a reduction in the need for pH correction chemicals and regular specialised servicing, all of which enhance the system’s whole-life costs. Coast Spas Launch 21ft Swim Spa Coast Spas Manufacturing Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of their new 21 foot swim spa, the 2100 VE. With a wide enough shell to accommodate two athletes swimming in tandem, this is one of, if not the largest swim spa on the market. Innovation is not new to the company as Coast once again pushes the boundaries of what is possible within the spa world. Due to its unprecedented width and length, the 2100 VE will change the way people use swim spas. Two bathers or more can now be in the same swim environment and participate in different activities. For example, a swimmer can be in the same swim spa while someone else is exercising whether on resistance equipment, aqua bike, or practising aquafit. Social activity within a spa can now be one of physical activity as well as to improve the lives of users further. Such a focus is important to Coast as wellness has always been part of their core values. Their long standing working relationship with Arthritis Research Canada in building spas that address the needs of arthritis sufferers is a testament to that commitment to health and wellness. Within a category of its own,

collection or next day delivery takes a lot of the stress out of providing maintenance to these systems. This is a critical application, as without steam a steam bath is useless and reduces the experience that the clients have paid for and expect, so down time must be kept to a minimum.

Steam room manufacturers need to know that this support is available down the line, maintenance contractors demand it to allow them to offer the service promised, and the end user businesses need to have their system operating efficiently. It is therefore essential to have a supplier with consistence of supply and technical advice over the phone or on site, as part of a planned maintenance programme. Britain’s only manufactured steam humidifier from Vapac, together with Humidity Solutions, provide the service required. Humidity Solutions 01372 571200 www.humiditysolutions.co.uk

Essex Hot Tub Team Blowing Bubbles At London Stadium An Essex based hot tub and leisure industry supplier is hoping that an association with the UK’s former Olympic Stadium will help deliver the message of the many associated health benefits of owning a spa system. Billericay’s Freedom Leisure, which has the largest Jacuzzi® Spa showroom in the UK, are approaching their 20th year of supplying, installing and servicing premium Jacuzzi® Spa products, and have signed up to the London Stadium Business Club partner programme to gain local and national exposure, via the stadium’s range of digital marketing assets. Steve Floyd, Freedom Leisure’s owner said: “I know professional sports guys find themselves in the opposite of what we offer, in their ice baths; but it is known that being in these warmer temperatures, especially with the quality therapy circulation pumps and jets that you get, increases blood flow dramatically through the body, repairs muscle tissue, and takes those aches and pains away. “It really is a multi-beneficial product, it is just getting that message across to the consumer.” With 60,000 football fans inside the

British Humidification – Better Together From the beginning of April, Leatherhead-based Humidity Solutions became the sole UK distributor for the West Midlands manufactured Vapac range of electrode boiler steam humidifiers. The knowledge and expertise of both companies combine to enable Vapac humidifiers to be offered to the market with the full package of support services. Vapac is the name for Electrode boilers and has for many years been a go-to make for this type of humidifier. Unfortunately, the manufacturing site was destroyed by fire in 2018 causing disruption to supply. Nortek Global HVAC, who has three leading brands in the UK (Reznor, ServerCool and Vapac), has dedicated itself to getting the production line up and running with improved stocks and supply reliability. Spares have been available for many months with humidifier production coming on line at the beginning of 2019. Stocks have been established and based at Humidity Solutions Ltd, allowing delivery of standard spares and humidifiers to be supplied directly. Kevin Hartshorne, Sales

Manager of Vapac, stated: “We are delighted to have Humidity Solutions to partner us in presenting Vapac back to the market after a turbulent year dealing with the disaster of the fire. This wiped out production for a number of months but our plan has always been to come back even better and stronger with our great product, and now the extra service and support offered by Humidity Solutions.” John Barker, Humidity Solutions Managing Director, said: “The chance to work with what has been the name for electrode boiler humidifiers in the UK over the past 40 years was too good an opportunity to pass by. We are delighted to be the exclusive distributor in the UK and to be able to add our Humidity control experience, expertise and application knowledge to the brand.” Humidity Solutions 01372 571200 www.humiditysolutions.co.uk

Plane Paradise – The Rooftop Pool And Observation Deck At The TWA Hotel The rooftop infinity pool and observation deck at the 512-room TWA Hotel made a splash on the hotel’s opening day, in May – and will remain open 365 days a year. Always refreshing, the water in the 63x20ft infinity edge pool offers a much-needed respite during sweltering summers. Come winter, it turns into a pool-cuzzi – the water can be heated up to 100 degrees! Whatever the weather, the water is perpetually pristine as it is purified every 30 minutes! Inspired by the infinity edge pool at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, France, the swimming spot has a beach entry and underwater seating – not to mention a gleaming TWA logo mosaic in the signature colours of gold and red. The infinity pool and its 10,000-square-foot observation deck sits on the horizon of a thrilling scene – JFK’s bustling Runway 4 Left/22 Right, with views all the way to Jamaica Bay.

At 12,079 feet long, 4L/22R is one of the biggest runways at JFK, the fifthbusiest airport in the United States. Jets bearing the livery of American Airlines, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Delta and 70 other carriers take off and land on the stretches of concrete just beyond the TWA Hotel. The observation deck also provides a view of the famous Bay Runway – measuring 14,511 feet long (almost 3 miles!), runway 13 Right/31 Left is the second-longest commercial runway in North America. Despite the heavy runway traffic at JFK’s 128 gates, the deck is surprisingly quiet though. Guests of the TWA Hotel are welcome to use the pool as part of their stay while non-hotel guests can make reservations online. Want to throw a pool party? The Pool Bar & Observation Deck can host private events for up to 300 people.

NIVEKO Pool Complements Project’s Contrasting Theme On the outskirts of a little German village in Baden-Württemberg, halfway between Frankfurt and Stuttgart, an eye-catching residence was created last year when a new family villa, complete with a NIVEKO MULTI overflow pool was built. The amazing relationship between the modern architecture of the house, the pool and its surroundings resulted in a tasteful combination and recurring theme of contrasting black and white elements. The villa’s white facade is edged with black lines, as is the 8.5-metre-long pool with its overflow trough and embedded natural black granite. The NIVEKO pool also includes a set of steps that run all along the width of the pool. Each individual detail has its own place here, with the shapes, colours and proportions tastefully complementing the minimalist style of the house. Just as elegant is the attractive seating, offering a beautiful view of the terrace and the pool. The high stone-filled gabion wall screens all this from prying eyes, while ornamental plants give the whole place the atmosphere of a seaside residence. Speaking about the project, the owner, Mr Schnell commented: “As we were building a new house from the ground up, a pool was a

must on our list of essentials. “Naturally, I already had an idea of how I wanted our pool to look – definitely an overflow, with a slat cover and top-of-therange filtration technology that I would not have to keep too close an eye on. “It wasn’t until I came across NIVEKO that I found a good balance between design quality and features.”

This stunning and unique project was awarded the gold medal in a competition organised by the German pool trade organisation bsw, as the winner of the 2018 ‘Private Outdoor Pool’ category. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Relaxation Space At One With Nature At Canadian Resort Spa

of Blouin Tardif Architecture Environnement, the Pavillon Ouest (West Pavilion) includes a large terrace, hot tub and Turkish bath. The new pavilion adds capacity to the spa, while pursuing the exceptional facility’s mission: reinventing the art of relaxation through a fully immersive experience in the heart of nature. Overlooking a breathtakingly beautiful natural reserve, BALNEA has always showcased gorgeous avant-garde architecture together with its splendid site. Until recently, the spa’s views were mainly over Lac Gale, while the new pavilion is designed to enhance contact with nature and the surrounding forest. Nestled in a forest of majestic

maples and other species, with a burbling stream providing the soundtrack, the new facility is a natural fit for the progression of the thermal experience. Inside, the hammam’s eucalyptus vapours ease the deepest tensions. Soft natural light helps create a cozy, serene ambiance. Unlike most steam baths of this type, the space includes a large south-facing window, screened from prying eyes by smoked-glass panels. Guests enjoy as much light as possible, without sacrificing

privacy. With a superb view of Lac Gale and the Appalachians, the enormous 1,500 sq. ft. terrace features clean lines, along with textures and materials (including ipe wood) inspired by the most appealing trends. Its position lets guests enjoy the sun comfortably from afternoon to sunset. The terrace is naturally integrated into the environment, and leads bathers to a spectacular whirlpool bath, designed for up to 25 bathers at a time – making it the spa’s largest.

Fluidra Reinforces Its Global Position With Olympic Pool Contracts Fluidra has strengthened its position as a leader in the field of Olympic pools after signing four contracts worth nearly €10m in Indonesia, Malaysia and Peru. The group, which has been designing and equipping competition and training pools for over 45 years, will build three pools for the Aquatic Arena Papua, located in the Indonesian province of the same name, which is due to host National Sport Week Papua 2020, an event held every four years featuring athletes from different disciplines drawn from all the provinces in the country. For this championship, Fluidra will assemble an Olympic swimming and water polo pool, an Olympic diving pool and a

warm-up pool to be fitted with a spa. The project entails building the structure with 1.5 metre Skypool panels, filtration and pumping with Praga filters and KIVU pumps, disinfection with ultraviolet automatic equipment, and competition accessories. Fluidra will also provide the competition and diving pools in neighbouring Malaysia, where the 20th Sukma Games are to be held, an event that will bring

together 3,000 athletes, official representatives and volunteers in 2020. For this event, the firm, the world leader in the pool and wellness equipment business, will renovate a competition pool and a diving pool. Fluidra has also been awarded the design and installation of an Olympic pool for the water polo competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games to be held in Lima, Peru. Specifically, Fluidra has designed, supplied and installed an Olympic pool with the Skypool building system, recently certified by FINA, at the Andrés Avelino Cáceres Sports Complex, located in the southeast of the Peruvian capital.

Senses – A Nature-Embedded Pool House In The Middle East Located in south Lebanon, ‘Senses’ is a pool house that was conceived and built as an extension to an existing residence. Therefore, the project is a beautiful exercise in fusion, where interior, exterior and landscape unite to create one holistic lifestyle canvas that speaks of design excellence. The aim for the designers at Wael Farran Studio was to create a hidden zone interconnected to the villa, yet isolated enough to respect the family’s privacy. Over a year and a half, the 3,000m2 olive grove was transformed into the perfect spot to receive guests, party or relax. The pool house includes a big family room, a gymnasium, a bedroom, two bathrooms, a hairdressing area, outdoor showers, a service kitchen, changing rooms and sink zones. A pool house is not complete without a pool and Senses boasts not

one, but two pools as well as a spa. While the olive trees were carefully transferred into a different area, the levels in the land were used to build a spa overflowing into an infinity pool that merges with the horizon and ends with an 8m waterfall pouring into a smaller pool on the lower level. The area also includes a swimming pool for kids. The space’s zen feel during the day turns more mystical at night with the strategically placed lighting all over the area. Meticulous attention was paid to the choice of materials and because it went well with the Bisazza mosaic tiles of the pools, Indian limestone was the dominant material for the facades. To emphasise the project’s open-air nature, the ceiling was combined with the upper zone garden, while the dividing walls of the interior space were built in a way to maximise visibility of the whole area from inside creating an outside experience.

Six Months In And A Lot Has Happened BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights the importance of industry events, education and networking initiatives that take place both in the UK and further afield

W

e are nearly halfway through the year, and there is much to report from the industry on this page, so here goes! Members of SPATA’s Technical Committee have been hard at work, with updates to SPATA’s Standards, supplements and member factsheets high on their priority list. There are also some suggested changes to The Tile Associations’ (TTA) publication entitled ‘The Design and Construction Process for Swimming Pools’. There have also recently been visits undertaken by Will Dando (to Paris) for a domestic swimming pool environmental standard that is being developed by CEN TC 402 WG5 and by Patrick Thorpe and Howard Gosling (to Bielefeld, Germany) for a variety of wellness standards being developed, including public spas, as part of CEN TC 136 WG16. Not to be outdone, the BISHTA Technical Committee has been hard at work updating BISHTA Standards. The Standards are available online and in paper format for members and there is an article on page 34 giving more of the details. There are a large number of member factsheets that are in the process of being revised or developed, including one on Consumer Credit Finance from BISHTA’s partner Hitachi Capital Consumer Finance and my thanks are due to Joe Galea for providing the factsheet and article on Consumer Credit Finance (which can be found on page 36). Please check out the member’s area of the website to see what other useful information is available to you.

Training is a vital part of any industry, and BISHTA is rightly proud of the 1,000+ people that have been through the water hygiene management course since 2016 – an amazing result and purely down to the fantastic work of the tutors. BISHTA has achieved another milestone, with 100 people successfully passing the electrical courses run in association with NICEIC. This has lead to a greater awareness of safe isolation procedures to keep staff free from harm. SPATA is also growing the number of industry courses available to support Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Courses already run this year include one on liner installation and also one on sauna and steam. It is hoped to run further courses on these topics later this year, subject to demand, and to develop some new courses through ongoing discussions with various SPATA supplier members about suitable courses that they may be interested in producing. My thanks to all of the SPATA members that have been involved in some / all of these courses so far (Aquaflex, Calorex, Certikin International, Golden Coast and Plastica). I look forward to sharing the progress of any new courses with other supplier members, when applicable. June is the month that sees various campaigns that raise awareness of the importance of learning to swim and to prevent drownings. Read more about this important topic on page 35, and I am grateful to David Walker at RoSPA for information ‘hot off the press’ regarding the drowning data for 2018 and an update on the Drowning Prevention Strategy, that is part of the National Water Safety Forum. In terms of Awards, the entries for the British Pool and Hot Tubs Awards will soon be open, and so members are encouraged to enter the industry’s longest established awards

event. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of a number of BISHTA and SPATA members, who help to make it possible to put on the Awards, which helps to promote the industry and to recognise the achievements of the work undertaken by members. Sallie Leslie-Golding and the PIP Committee then maximise exposure to generate publicity within the trade and consumer press to promote our products and services. We wish the best of luck to the 2019 British Pool and Hot Tub Award winners who have been shortlisted as the British entries for the 2019 European Pool and Spa Awards. They are currently waiting to hear if they have won an award, with this year’s EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations) award ceremony being held at aquanale, in Cologne on Thursday 7 November. This is the seventh year of running the event and with Germany hosting their second awards event, this honour has also been bestowed to France (twice) Italy, Spain and the UK (at SPATEX). The UK is also heavily involved in coordinating the third meeting of the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA). The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Barcelona on Monday 14 October, and the subgroups are looking at data/ statistics, education and safety. It is possible that there may also be interest in a group to look at sustainability issues. That’s all from me for now, have a great summer! .

BISHTA Standards 2019 With the release of the 2019 BISHTA Standards, we take a closer look at what’s changed and what’s new in this latest update from the association

T

he 2019 BISHTA Standards are now available to members in a paper format, and they are also available online via the members’ area of the BISHTA website. This version of the BISHTA Standards replaces the previous version that was originally updated in 2010. There are now nearly 100 pages of Standards and useful appendices. It is envisaged that the number of pages will continue to increase due to the development of new (and the revision of existing) materials, with the development (and revision) of member factsheets as a vital support service. These factsheets are also available in the members’ area of the website. With so many changes in the industry over the last few years – such as HSG 282 (replacing the Management of Spa Pools publication), PWTAG’s ‘Hot Tubs for Business’ publication and the development of a European standard for domestic spas and hot tubs (BS EN 17125), as well as revisions to the existing electric spa standard EN 60335-2-60 – it meant that it was crucial to have the new BISHTA Standards available this year to ensure that they were as up to date as possible, with the intention that the BISHTA Standards will need to continue to evolve as new guidance is produced.

SO, WHAT IS IN THE 2019 BISHTA STANDARDS? The main headings are as follows: 1. Introduction 2. Definition 3. Types of Hot Tubs, Exercise Spas and Associated Equipment 4. Types of Settings 5. Selecting the Right Hot Tub for Your Customer 6. Delivery and Installation 7. Shell Structures 8. Equipment 9. Water Treatment and Chemical Standards 10. Electrical 11. Energy Efficiency 12. Maintenance 13. Safety 14. Acknowledgements and References

There are also a series of Appendices as follows: 1. Hot Tub Record Testing Sheet 2. Data Sheets 3. Handover Documentation 4. Further Advice on Hot Tubs Used in a Business Setting 5. Further Advice on Hot Tub Hiring 6. Site Survey 7. Glossary of Terms

WHAT’S NEW IN THE STANDARDS? The importance of HSG 282 for hot tubs used in a business activity such as holiday parks and homes cannot be overestimated. Although HSG 282 was a follow on from the ‘Management of Spa Pools’ (which was published in 2006), the industry has fully embraced the guidance so that the visitors to these locations are kept safe. Much of the HSG 282 guidance has also been included in BISHTA’s water hygiene management course that was updated in 2016, and more than 1,000 people have been through this training since, an incredible figure and thanks are due to the various tutor teams that run these courses on behalf of BISHTA. Namely, Complete Pool Controls (Martin Rigby, Matt Roberts, John Key and Keith Pescott), Pollet Pool Group (Jimmy Lamb and Lesley Hipkiss), SpaTech Training / 1 Stop Spas (Chris Brady) and Pool and Spa Advice (Howard Gosling). Other tutors such as Robin Flux from Lonza / Arch Chemicals can offer the course when there is sufficient demand. BS EN 17125 defines Scandinavian hot tubs as a ‘spa for single use of water, where the water temperature is increased from an external heat source and which is sited outdoors’. These products are being sold for both domestic and business settings, with the need for emptying the products every few hours (depending on whether the water is potable or non-potable) these products need

better guidance from the manufacturers to ensure they are used appropriately. The electrical section has benefited from feedback from experts in various places, but special thanks to BISHTA’s partners NICEIC, who have not only delivered electrical courses to 100 people but have been given pragmatic feedback on the words used in the electrical section. This includes a recommendation for the use of an earth electrode, where applicable, when installing hot tubs. There is a new section on energy efficiency to take note of BS EN 17125. This section is expected to evolve as this important topic of sustainability grows ever more popular. Promoting the use of safety covers when hot tubs are not in use, is an important health and safety message. Many hot tubs are sold with this type of safety protection device, but the message from BISHTA is to continue to sell the health benefits of hot tubs and exercise spas, but with appropriate conversations to ensure that when not used they are protected from unauthorised use. There are new Appendices, such as ‘Further Advice on Hot Tubs Used for a Business Setting’, with some additional items from members giving practical guidance on terms and conditions, etc. The site survey information has been added to the Appendices as well, which is used as part of the course on offer from BISHTA entitled ‘Hot Tub Site Surveyor’. Overall, the existing text retained from the 2010 version remains in black, and for ease of reading and to hightlight where changes have taken place, the new text for 2019 is in green. There are also some health and safety messages and warnings in red. The revision of the BISHTA Standards has only been possible thanks to the hard work of the Technical Committee (Howard Gosling, Stephen Crabb, Pete Grinnall, Chris Brady, Karl Rowntree, Lesley Hipkiss and Matt Middleton). There was also input from many of the BISHTA Committee members, not on the Technical Committee (Tony Welsby, Martyn Winstone, Jonathan Bunn, Dorian Davies, Jimmy Lamb, Shaun Pickles, Kevin Newby and Dave Ramsden). POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Drowning Incidents Continue To Fall There’s ‘cautious optimism’ as the latest statistics from the National Water Safety Forum show the trend towards a reduction of deaths in water continues

T

he British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) is very proud to be part of the National Water Safety Forum’s (NSWF) Swimming Advisory Group which comprises a number of organisations that meet up to discuss how to make swimming safer and how to improve swimming participation. The UK is fortunate to have available a complex database that records details of all of the drownings in the UK and the most recent figures from the NWSF’s Water Incident Database (WaID) in the UK have been released, and deaths from accidental drowning have fallen in the three years since the National Drowning Prevention Strategy (www.nationalwatersafety.org.uk/strategy) was launched. However, the figures show a rise in the number of suicides in water, which need to be addressed, but overall, there are reasons for ‘cautious optimism’. WaID compiles statistics from across the UK from several sources including inquests and breaks these down into deaths by activity, age, location type and geography, to give those working in prevention a clearer idea of where to target interventions. Some of the key findings from the UK Annual Fatal Incident Report for 2018 are: • In 2018, as in previous years, men were disproportionately represented in the statistics, with 230 males dying in fatal drowning incidents in the UK. • Rivers and beaches continue to be the most common locations for fatal drowning incidents. Last year, 74 people drowned in rivers and 73 on, or near, beaches. • Accidental drownings in swimming pools continue to be a rare event in the UK, with one death in 2018. This is a reduction against the previous trend of an average of 4 accidental fatalities a year (2015-17). • In domestic settings, there were a further 15 accidental drowning deaths in 2018 which represent no change on the previous trend. Ponds and baths being the main location in the home for these events. • The total deaths in water (all outcomes inc suicide) in 2018 was 585, of which 263 were accidental drownings, 232 were deaths by suicide and accidental drowning whilst swimming were 34 (all enviroments). A full copy of the UK Annual Fatal Incident Report for 2018 can be viewed at www.nationalwatersafety.org.uk/waid/reports-and-data

THE STRATEGY GOING FORWARD The UK Drowning Prevention Strategy (DPS) aims to reduce accidental drowning fatalities in the UK by 50% by 2026 and reduce risk amongst the highest risk populations, groups and communities. In

terms of swimming, the UK DPS supports the drive to enable every child to be able to swim and be water safe, and this is an important message for everyone involved in swimming to promote. David Walker, Head of Leisure Safety at RoSPA, and secretary to NWSF said: “The impact of design improvements and safety regulations that have evolved in the UK over the last few decades have clearly brought about a situation where zero accidental drowning deaths in managed pools are achievable. “The question for the managed pool environment is; how best to ensure the transition to blended lifeguarding and technology can be implemented without unduly impacting this positive trend; and how to extend what is undoubtedly excellent supervision/design water-side into the ancillary spaces, as we can now see an emerging trend of harm originating from these spaces. A truly national understanding of what the scale of non-fatal drownings and other associated harms are in pools, we feel is the first step to be taken to address this. “Children under ten years are particularly vulnerable to drowning, around 1/4 of all fatalities in this age group happened at home or pools. It will continue to be an area of focus for RoSPA, and we will work with partners such as the BSPF to look at improvements in a proportionate rational way.” From the pool and hot tub industry, there is a growing awareness of the importance of safety messages being given to end users, and the European standards have a recommendation for providing safety devices, such as fences, covers and enclosures. Around the world, National Pool and Spa Associations have begun meeting, and the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA) have a subgroup on ‘Safety’, and they will be meeting in Barcelona on Monday 14 October to confirm what progress has been made in this subgroup. A Look At Consumer Credit Finance Joe Galea, Senior Business Development Manager at Hitachi Capital Consumer Finance, provides an overview of the service available to members of BISHTA

H

itachi Personal Finance is a trading style of Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, a leading financial services company with over 30 years’ experience providing innovative finance solutions that help consumers and businesses to grow and prosper across the UK. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Capital Corporation, one of Japan’s largest non-bank financial institutions. Originally established to provide innovative financial solutions to manufacturers, the company now meets the demands of millions of individuals and businesses across the UK. Hitachi Personal Finance is not a bank, and we hope it shows. Our approach to lending is personal; we’ve tailor-made our loans to match the things your customers want to buy, to make the process as easy as possible. Our relationship with BISHTA is longstanding and we have been providing our services to the trade association for over ten years. We can help members with large purchases, and provide members with consumer financial products and services giving those members the flexibility to offer their customers a great solution for purchasing their products. Below I will outline the scheme and highlight the other resources that are available to BISHTA members.

WHAT IS CONSUMER CREDIT FINANCE? Consumer finance gives customers the option to spread their payment for goods and services and repay over several months, or to delay payment for a specified period. Consumer finance involves a credit check being performed.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CONSUMER CREDIT FINANCE? Having a consumer credit option gives customers the option to pay for their purchase by repaying conveniently over a number of chosen months, making goods more affordable for your customer.

WHAT CREDIT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FROM HITACHI? • Interest-free Credit: Interest-free credit allows the customer to pay for goods using finance without paying interest on the finance borrowed. This product has the strongest promotional message, drives

36 June 2019 SPN 40_SPN_June_19_Hitachi_Rev.indd 36

footfall and is proven to increase the conversion rate from enquiry to sale. • Interest Bearing Credit: The customer uses finance to pay for goods but pays interest on the amount borrowed. This product is less promotionally strong than interest-free credit but still drives sales. • Countdown Interest Bearing Credit (CDIBC): The customer can pay for goods using finance and defer their first monthly payment for 12 months. After this deferred period, the customer pays the balance over several months, with incurring interest. This is a promotionally strong product and will help increase conversion rates.

COST TO THE MEMBER AND SET-UP TIMES BISHTA members can view a full rate card for all of the finance products available to them on the secure members’ area of the BISHTA website. Set-up of a new retailer normally takes between two weeks to a month from the date we receive the completed application pack. (Subject to approval).

CUSTOMER APPLICATION Customer applications are performed using our online Creditmaster2 system and normally take five minutes to input with a decision within seven seconds. Subject to the customer being approved they can then move on to signing the agreement electronically.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FROM THE MEMBER? The retailer can offer up to 12 months interest-free without the need of an FCA Permission; however, if the retailer chooses to offer terms longer than 12 months Interestfree and any finance product with an APR or charge, they will require an FCA Permission.

Our relationship with BISHTA is long-standing and we have been providing our services to the trade association for over ten years”

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

The Value of Attending Industry Events Sallie Leslie-Golding, PR & Marketing Manager at BSPF, BISHTA and SPATA takes a closer look at industry-related events, and why it’s important to make time for them

W

hen you have so much work on your plate with the day-to-day running of your company, it can sometimes be hard to take time out to attend business events, but the truth is there is a good reason to be present at industry events – quite frankly, they lead to better networking environments and the possibility of generating more money! There are always quantifiable factors based on your business circumstances, but there can be great value in taking time out. As a result of going out to more industry events, you can experience new opportunities for your business. Here are three examples of the benefits of attending industry events:

1. IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS ARE POWERFUL In a world where everything has become digital, in-person connections can be extremely powerful. A little goes a long way, and in this modern age, that means meeting up with people face to face. You can make some great connections online, however, the connections are deepened when you meet in person. When this happens, people feel more inclined to help each other out. This can lead to new business partnerships, referrals, leads and the sharing

POOL, SPA AND HOT TUB INDUSTRY WEEKEND Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September 2019 In Brighton BSPF President Will Dando and his wife Trudy Hillman would like to invite you to the Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Industry Weekend, being held this year in Brighton. Open to everyone in the industry, this weekend by the sea is a fantastic opportunity to network with peers in a relaxed environment. Guests will stay at The Grand Hotel, and the weekend includes dining experiences and entertainment, plus the

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 41_SPN_June_19_BSF_Events_Rev.indd 37

of useful information and great new business opportunities.

2. YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU MIGHT MEET The more you attend industry events, the more you expand your network. The more you expand your network, the more you position yourself for opportunities that may present themselves. The truth is you never know who you may meet at industry events. For that reason alone, you need to go to as many relevant events as possible.

3. VARIOUS EVENTS PROVIDE DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES Getting the most from an event is all about perspective. Looking at an event for where the opportunities for your business lie, can be a great way to choose which events you should be attending. For example, attending a training course can provide you with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) so that you engage in actively developing and enhancing your abilities, but at the same time you can make new contacts within the industry and you may gain beneficial new ideas through sharing the day with your industry peers. Other examples are the annual

Industry Gala Awards Evening which features the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA (held during SPATEX at the Ricoh Arena) and the Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Industry Weekend which takes place bi-annually and is hosted by the current BSPF President (which for 2018 – 2020 is Will Dando). Both of these events are open to everybody in the industry; they are great social occasions that bring people together, where new business relationships can be formed, and peers with common interests can discuss their trials, tribulations and successes.

FINAL THOUGHTS Attending industry events can be part of your overall business growth strategy. The more you grow your network, the more you are in the right place at the right time for opportunities when they arise. Both BISHTA and SPATA organise and run a range of industry events throughout the year which are aimed at providing their members with invaluable training and development opportunities. To stay informed, you can find all the latest industry diary dates by visiting www.bspf.org.uk. STA POOL PLANT – POOL WATER MANAGEMENT

A Focused Approach To Pool Water Management In March, Right Directions in collaboration with STA and Quest launched a new Pool Water Management Quality Mark in line with industry best practice

A

s Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at STA’s awarding organisation’ Safety Training Awards, Luke Griffiths played a key role in the quality mark’s development and here he explains the rationale for the update in more detail. The new Pool Water Management Quality Mark forms an updated module as part of the Quest Plus assessment. It follows industry best practice to give pool operators guidance on how to provide safe, clean and hygienic swimming pool water and how to manage the pool in a responsible, efficient and effective way. By working collaboratively and sharing expertise, Right Directions with STA has split the Pool Water Management Quality Mark content within Quest into the following sub-sections.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT OF HEALTH AND SAFETY The Quest assessors check that sufficient health and safety management practices, such as Pool Safety Operating Procedures, Pool Technical Operation Procedures and risk assessments etc. are completed appropriately and reviewed when required.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT The new standard checks that facilities have appropriately qualified staff responsible for pool plant operations, and that personnel hold in date pool plant operations qualifications, such as the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations. This also includes checking that support staff responsible for testing pool water and basic maintenance hold, as a minimum, a water testing qualification such as STA’s Level 2 Award in Swimming Pool Water Testing. The assessors will also check that sufficient induction and training procedures and records are in place to show staff are not only qualified, but are trained and competent to carry out their roles in relation to specific plant operation and use of chemicals.

BATHER HYGIENE Assessors will check the facility has provisions

in place for the promotion of exclusion policies (for example when bathers should not swim, i.e. has an infection, diarrhoea or have been diagnosed with cryptosporidiosis within the last 14 days). Checks will also be made to ensure suitable facilities are available for preswim bather hygiene.

CLEANING AND HOUSEKEEPING Achievement of the quality mark will also be determined by how clean the pool, its surrounds, ancillary facilities and applicable equipment is, and how it is maintained. The assessors want to see that regimes are in place to ensure tasks are carried out routinely using appropriate equipment and cleaning chemicals.

MONITORING WATER QUALITY The standard checks that facilities are appropriately monitoring water quality in terms of water testing regimes and practices, as well as the operation and maintenance of automatic dosing controllers.

WATER TREATMENT Facilities achieving the quality mark will have shown they have suitable and appropriate water treatment chemicals and practices in place. Assessors will want to see that bather loads, circulation rates and turnover periods have been worked out and procedures are in place to ensure there is sufficient dilution.

FILTRATION The standard checks that facilities have suitable filtration and backwash rates. The assessors will check that procedures are in place for the management and maintenance of filtration and backwashing, as well as appropriate filter servicing.

42_SPN_June_19_STA.indd 38

A MARK OF QUALITY Pool plant operations are a critical area for management in a wet leisure facility – and the new Pool Water Management Quality Mark will provide pool operators with an effective operational quality mark, which will demonstrate as part of their customer service framework that they operate a safe pool facility. Being part of Quest, a recognised and trusted quality marque, will also encourage a focused approach to the ongoing safe management of pool water. The Pool Water Management Quality Mark is now live as part of the Quest Plus assessment. It does not need to be taken as part of Quest; it can be achieved as a stand-alone award for £495.00 plus VAT. For further information or for an application please email info@rightdirections.co.uk.

STOP PRESS! As this month’s feature goes to press, there have been several incidents reported in the media about swimming pools having to be closed due to problems with water temperature, ventilation and mechanical defects etc. These cases serve as a reminder as to why the new Quality Mark is important, and its importance in helping facilities promote best practice to leisure customers.

PLANT ROOM Assessors will look to see that plant rooms have sufficient general plant room requirements such as control of authorised access, chemical delivery, chemical storage, safety systems, procedures for dealing with chemical spills and appropriate chemical dosing practices.

The new Pool Water Management Quality Mark forms an updated module as part of the Quest Plus assessment” 38 June 2019 SPN

HEATING AND AIR CIRCULATION Achievement of the standard will show the facility operates within recommended temperature and humidity requirements for the intended user groups. Checks will be made to ensure heating and ventilation systems have regular inspections and servicing by appropriately trained heating and ventilation engineers.

HEAT PUMPS

Heat Pumps Prove To Be A Hot Sector The heating of water within pools and spas can be achieved in a variety of ways, but heat pumps have become the go-to choice for many due to their economic benefits combined with environmentally friendly operation. There’s plenty of options available too with numerous manufacturers providing these energy efficient solutions, and with new or improved models joining some established favourites for 2019, in this issue we take a closer look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson

F

or many swimming pools and spas across the country, heat pumps have, for a long time now, been accepted as the ideal solution to heat water efficiently, whilst extending what are often short seasons here in the UK. With models producing up to several times more energy than they consume, heat pumps often effortlessly outperform some more conventional heating methods and that’s what makes them an easy choice for both owners and installers alike. With impressive energy and therefore cost savings to be made, the latest heat pump models on offer are becoming increasingly sophisticated and intelligent in their operation. Many designs now feature some form of inverter technology and a number of them can now also be controlled via smart device apps, and as the technology and ease of use increases, their appeal is likely to as well. With various brands, models and options available from a variety of sources, careful research and professional advice is a must, but there’s usually a perfect heat pump solution on offer for virtually any pool or spa configuration, so in this issue, we take a closer look at the various options on offer.

HEATSTAR – A HEAT PUMP PIONEER IN THE UK The history of heat pumps in the UK is, in many ways, the history of Heatstar. In 1980, the company created the first fresh air source heat pumps for dedicated application on swimming pools and the Heatstar ‘brand’ was born. During the last 39 years Heatstar have continued to innovate and have pioneered the design and development of a wide range of modern, highly energy efficient pool climate control systems and their Aquarius heat pump continues to be a major product in Heatstar’s portfolio. Today’s Aquarius heat pump has built on the company’s pedigree and has taken full advantage of all the changes in materials and technology to produce a state-of-the-art product that is of the highest quality. This Aerothermal heat pump utilises ‘direct contact’ technology to transfer heat from the refrigerant directly into the pool water and also incorporates an ultra-quiet ‘low energy’ digital air fan. These top of the range heat pumps maintain their visually unique appearance due to the utilisation of an anodised aluminium frame chassis. Specified and applied for its long term corrosion resistance and physical strength this eye-catching profile serves instantly to reflect the true quality offered from the Aquarius. Underscoring the quality of the product, Heatstar offer a 20 year anti corrosion guarantee on the Aquarius’ heat exchanger and a 20 year guarantee on the anodised aluminium chassis. The Aquarius continues to be manufactured only in the UK and still utilises the finest quality components. Accordingly, Heatstar Heatstar’s Aquarius continues to be manufactured only in the UK and still utilises the finest quality components

pride themselves on their outstanding warranties and proven on site after sales support and assistance using only Heatstar technicians. The Aquarius range now also extends to encompass large capacity models for non-residential pool applications so for projects both residential and commercial, where a heat pump solution offering assured long term durability and genuine quality is a priority, the Aquarius is a great option.

Bosta UK are proud to introduce their highest specification heat pump unit to date – The Norsup inverter ‘P’ series

INTRODUCING THE 2019 NORSUP INVERTER HEAT PUMP – ‘P’ SERIES As part of the ongoing improvements to the Norsup product range, Bosta UK are proud to introduce their highest specification heat pump unit to date. Energy efficiency is a crucial factor when selecting the plant equipment of a swimming pool for discerning pool owners. The Norsup inverter is 50% more efficient than standard single speed heat pumps. There are many variations of inverter available but the efficiency of the Norsup unit is achieved through a fully variable speed fan and compressor, rather than set speeds. The efficiency is highlighted by the coefficient value of 16 that the units can reach. The Norsup inverter ‘P’ series is now supplied with the improved R32 gas, which

SPN June 2019 41 03/06/2019 17:11

is more energy-efficient, meaning less gas is required to charge the heat pump. This new gas also avoids the high tariffs placed on R410a gas over the last few years, resulting in better value for money. The Norsup heat pump range has been built to last, which is why Bosta are pleased to offer an exceptional four year parts and labour warranty which is the best available on the UK market. Although suppliers offer extended periods on the heat exchanger and compressor (ten years), it is normal to offer a two or three-year warranty for parts only, but Bosta’s four years sets a new precedent in the market. Whilst the inverter technology allows extremely low electrical consumption in the silent modes of less than 0.5kW/h, it also has the added benefit of running extremely quietly. In silent mode owners can expect sound levels of just 42dB at 1 metre distance which is super-quiet. The 2019 models also now come with built in Wi-Fi capability to allow access via an app to control the heat pump remotely as standard, as well as a detachable 6” colour touchscreen display for easy operation.

CERTIKIN IS A HOT CHOICE FOR H&V When it comes to choice, Certikin have a wide range of heat pump solutions to accommodate all budgets. Supplied exclusively to the pool trade by Certikin,

Duratech heat pumps are an extremely popular choice with customers of Golden Coast, exclusive UK stockists of the range

the affordable HPP is proving to be a huge success. Specifically designed for heating small and medium sized outdoor pools and spas, it’s super easy to install and is an affordable option for water heating and extending the season for owners. The HPP heat pump can produce up to five times the energy it consumes. The low energy consumption coupled with high heat production makes the HPP pump an environmentally friendly way to heat swimming pool water. Not only is it competitively priced, its other credentials include a reverse cycle defrost, quiet operation and an impressive three-year warranty (first year on site parts and labour, followed by second and third year parts only). There are five models (6, 8, 12, 15 and 20kW). The heat pump comes in an attractive graphite grey ABS cabinet and has a scroll or rotary compressor (dependent upon product size), a titanium heat exchanger plus a reverse cycle defrost enabling operation down to 3° C air temperature. The HPP pump has an integrated controller with a touch-screen user interface. The Calorex Pro-Pac heat pump range, distributed by Certikin remains as popular as ever. Designed specifically for the UK climate and available for summer season and all year round, models 8-22 come with a three-year on site parts and labour warranty, plus a ten-year anti-corrosion warranty

on the casing. Furthermore, all cabinet volumes for models 8-22 are less than 0.6m3 and therefore comply with the permitted development requirements.

GOLDEN COAST OFFER SMART, EFFICIENT HEATING WITH DURATECH With energy efficiency and reduced bills high on customers’ wish lists, Duratech heat pumps are an extremely popular choice with customers of Golden Coast, exclusive UK stockists of the range. Clever inverter technology means that the pump can reach extremely high coefficient of performance regardless of outside temperature, allowing the pool to be swimready in no time, with temperature adjustable in steps of 0.1°C. The Dura Pro also features a full-colour touchscreen for ease of use, allowing you to monitor all the information you’d want around temperature, energy consumption and pressure, while the unique ventilation structure of the unit means it reaches noise levels as low as 40dB – that’s library level – giving you peace and quiet as well as peace of mind. Golden Coast Managing Director, Jamie Adams, said: “Since we started selling the Duratech range, we’ve had so many positive words back from customers – and I can understand why.” Built to the highest specification by Belgian manufacturer Propulsion Systems, Duratech’s heat pumps make use of PVC and other durable materials to ensure a long and reliable product life. The Dura Pro benefits from titanium heat exchangers, which are highly resistant to corrosion by salt, chlorine and bromine and are covered by a two-year warranty. Jamie continued: “The entire Duratech range delivers excellent value for money – especially when you consider the long-term costs of other forms of pool heating. It’s a fantastic option for extending pool use all year round.”

The new Zodiac Z400iQ from Lighthouse ups the game on the design of air source heat pumps. With its sleek lines and two colour options, the Z400 iQ disappears elegantly into any pool’s surroundings. The traditional horizontal air-discharge of other heat pumps require several metres of space in front of them. The Z400iQ, with its vertical air outlet, reduces this free area footprint by 70%. This discreet machine fits around most pools, even in confined spaces the Z400iQ knows how to go unnoticed, halving the noise with its silence mode, which reduces the fan speed at the touch of a button. Add to this the smartphone capability allowing you to set temperatures remotely and consult the Z400iQ’s different modes of operation and users truly have an air source heat pump which ticks all the boxes of the modern pool owner. The increasingly popular Zodiac ZS500 range of heat pumps is continuing to please pool customers across the land too. The elegant modern clean shape of the ZS500 allows it to be placed into the garden and not look like the blocky chunk of steel which

this sector often seems to be burdened with. The vertically mounted, top venting fan allows for the machine’s small footprint to make the most of its clean lines. The unit is ideally placed into tight corners where a conventional heat pump would struggle to perform, as the ZS500 only requires a 500mm air gap around its base, its cold discharge air is blown into the sky where the 5m clearance is usually not a problem. Add to this an inverter driven fan and compressor and you get a machine that doesn’t wake the neighbours when it comes on in the evening. In fact, it is so quiet, it almost easy to forget that it is even there!

MINIMUM NOISE, MAXIMUM COP – MEET THE GARDEN PAC INVERTECH Fast becoming one of the industry’s heat pumps of choice, the latest GardenPac InverTech from SCP UK is powered by a unique full-inverter technology fan motor, which adjusts the compressor speed hertz by hertz and the fan speed rotation by rotation. A high quality inverter is designed mainly for low speed running which leads to minimum noise, maximum CoP and a long highly efficient working life. When maintaining the pool temperature

HEAT PUMPS by an average of 50% of the unit capacity, the average sound pressure of a GardenPac InverTech heat pump can create a sound environment ten times quieter and more consumer friendly than standard on / off heat pump models – quieter in fact than a lot of domestic fridges! Every GardenPac heat pump has soft start technology which means the current will increase from 0A to the rated current over a two minute period thus eliminating any burden to the household electricity system. A unique warranty is applied to the compressor and the titanium heat exchanger of seven years giving peace of mind for many years of value for money and quality. Able to operate with air down to -7°C below zero, the InverTech maximises the pool season for their owner and this year, they have become even more simple to operate, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity and an easy-touse app which gives total control over the heat pump via any smart device.

PLASTICA PUMPS OFFER COST EFFECTIVE POOL HEATING As fuel prices increase, it’s important that the most cost effective and energy efficient method of heating is chosen for a customer’s pool – and the Heat Seeker heat pump from Plastica consumes less than one-fifth of the electricity of conventional electric pool heaters. The efficiency of heat pumps is measured by a ‘coefficient of performance’ (CoP). For every one kW of electricity consumed, the Heat Seeker will generate approximately 5kW of heat for a pool’s water, remarkable when you consider that the most efficient electric and gas heaters produce less than 1kW of heating for every one kW consumed. Plastica’s 17kW and 21kW models can be SCP’s InverTech now has Wi-Fi connectivity and an easy-to-use app which gives total control over the heat pump via any smart device

For customers wanting to run their pool all year round, Plastica offer the 21kW HSE21ESS model

supplied with soft start to reduce load on start up. In addition to their efficiency, proven reliability and unbeatable value, models in the range are extremely quick and easy to install and feature standard 1.5 inch connections for ABS pipe work. Thanks to their rugged design, which incorporates a strong steel casing, models are suitable for outdoor installations. A unique fan and highly efficient compressor design ensures extremely quiet operation and the compressors, which are Japanese engineered, are widely accepted as

the most reliable on the market. In addition, all HeatSeeker models also come with a titanium heat exchanger and a programmable digital control which allows precise control of the pool temperature and which can be installed remotely to enable convenient fingertip operation. For customers wanting to run their pool all year round, Plastica offer the HSE21ESS which is a 21kW model with a 3.5kW input. This has a CoP of 6 (ambient air 24ºC and water 26ºC) and CoP of 3.2 (ambient air 2ºC and water 26ºC). This unit is also supplied with a soft start as standard.

HOT TUBS IN THE COMMERCIAL SECTOR

Hot Tub Solutions For Holiday Parks And More Over recent years, hot tubs have enjoyed huge success in a variety of commercial environments and have become must-have pieces of kit, especially at holiday parks, rental cottages and lodges around the UK. With their inclusion often now seen as standard in these settings, manufacturers have been quick to produce a number of sector specific solutions to make ownership easier, and we take a closer look at just some the options By Jon Wadeson

N

o longer to be found only in domestic settings, hot tubs are now appearing in a variety of other locations. Owners of sports clubs and leisure facilities have added them to their facilities for the active whilst proprietors of holiday destinations have seen them as great additions to enhance the vacation experience and provide a place for guests to relax. They’re increasingly popping up at events and festivals too! UK based lodges, cottages and holiday parks in particular have embraced hot tubs over recent years and after Wi-Fi, hot tubs are the most requested item from customers researching holidays destinations of this type online. Research also suggests that with the introduction of a hot tub, premiums of up to 40% can be added to the overall price of a holiday. And in addition to this premium, occupancy rates greatly improve too. With statistics like these, it is no surprise that hot tubs have performed well in the sector and are adopted by increasing numbers every year. A number of considerations have to be taken into account when it comes to maintaining models in business settings though. Their operation should be in accordance with the latest Health & Safety Guidance – HSG282: The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems – something which there is more information on within this feature. Operating methods, costs and durability also have to be considered too but thankfully, manufacturers have been quick to produce a number of models and technologies specifically for a sector where a hot tub needs to be particularly robust, easy to maintain and cost effective to operate. With numerous solutions on offer, in this issue, we take a closer look at just some that are being used within the sector. Especially designed and commissioned for the commercial market, the Imperium 282 is one of four models launched by Hot Tub Suppliers in 2019

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 49-51_SPN_June_19_Commercial_Spas.indd 49

HOT TUB SUPPLIERS’ 282 COLLECTION SIMPLIFIES OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT The 282 range of hot tubs is designed and equipped with all the features required for a safe and successful hot tub experience for both guests and management. For 2019, Hot Tub Suppliers launched four models especially designed and commissioned for the commercial market: the Olympus 282, the Baron 282, the Imperium 282 and the Orbis 282. A commercial hot tub has to feature all the specification of a luxury hot tub with added features to ensure owners and operators remain totally in control of the hot tub and any HSG 282 requirements. Hot tubs in the 282 collections are reliably sanitised via an inline chemical feeder which has been designed with a patented performance valve that operates on cue, responding accurately to each adjustment with its wide range of settings. Chemical dosing is vital to keep the hot tub sanitised and free of bacteria for safe use by the guests. The top control panel also has minimal functions to restrict the user to basic

operations (jets and lights). A second, complete management control panel is hidden within the cabinet of the hot tub with a lockable cabinet to ensure safety. From experience, Hot Tub Suppliers know a restricted top panel will eliminate user errors and keep the hot tub in peak condition. A Wi-Fi receiver is connected to the hot tub to enable each to be BWA (Balboa Water App) enabled. This enables remote control of the hot tub and gives management maximum control. The Balboa App is free to download and is available for smartphones via the app store. Wi-Fi, management control panel and automatic feeder are all concealed behind the hot tub cabinet with a lockable door again to eliminate outside disturbance.

BOWMAN – HEATING HOT TUBS IN AN HOUR For commercial holiday parks, hot tubs have become the ‘must have’ guest attraction. They are one of the most searched for facilities when guests make bookings and industry research suggests that providing hot tubs attracts more visitors, provides a better financial return and lengthens the season for visitors. However, hot tubs do have a downside during guest change over periods. Staff have only a few hours to drain, clean, refill and heat the tubs prior to new guests arriving. And after tiring hours travelling to their destination, the first thing guests want to do is jump into their luxurious hot tub! The problem is that most hot tubs use electric heaters that only heat water between 1°C and 2°C per hour. So even when pre-filled with 30°C water, it could still take around four hours or more to have them ready for guests. An alternative solution comes from Bowman, who have developed a heat exchanger for hot tubs. It enables the tub to be heated from an external boiler, such as

SPN June 2019 49 03/06/2019 17:08

HOT TUBS IN THE COMMERCIAL SECTOR gas, LPG or hybrid air source. This compact, powerful unit can heat water by around 10°C per hour, enabling a 1,400 litre hot tub using preheated 25°C water to be heated and operational in about one hour. Using ambient temperature water, the heat up time is still under four hours. Holiday parks are already discovering the benefits of Bowman heat exchangers, as in addition to reduced heat up times, energy costs can be significantly reduced – electricity being an extremely expensive form of heating. One customer, heating 24 hot tubs at their woodland lodges, claim savings of £12,000 per year by switching to Bowman units for their tubs!

Holiday parks are already discovering the benefits of Bowman heat exchangers, with reduced heat up times and lower energy costs

DARLLY EUROPE’S REVOLUTIONARY SANISTREAM DOSING SOLUTION The Health & Safety Executive’s recent publication ‘HSG282’, sets out specific and detailed guidelines for hot tubs installed in holiday let situations and places risk responsibility on holiday let owners and operators to ensure their installations are compliant. Section 76 of HSG282 deals with the specification of hot tubs installed in such a setting and prescribes that hot tubs must be “disinfected using bromine or chlorine through the use of an inline disinfectant feeder”. This ensures that the disinfectant is dosed continuously while the hot tub is in use or in a filter cycle, and avoids the peaks and troughs in disinfectant levels that would occur by hand dosing or the use of floating type dispensers. The great news is the team at Darlly Europe invented a competitive and effective solution for HSG282 compliance for the majority of hot tubs on sale in the UK with the launch earlier in the year of their revolutionary new SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System. SaniStream is an inline dosing dispenser which allows for the continuous dosing of chlorine and bromine tablets or granules. It is fully adjustable to allow for the regulation of sanitiser flow depending on the demands of the particular spa it is fitted in and it does

The team at Darlly Europe invented a competitive and effective solution for HSG282 compliance with new SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System

not require the modification of any of the hot tub’s existing plumbing. SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System is designed to install in the void in the centre of an adapted Darlly filter cartridge, so that dosing is inline and continuous whenever the spa is in a filter cycle or in actual use – satisfying the key demands of HSG282 compliance. The design also allows easy access for inspection, refill or replacement, while keeping it locked away out of sight of consumers using the spa.

DOSING THE EASY WAY – THE AQUASPARKLE BROMINE POD The AquaSPArkle Bromine Pod is a revolutionary pre-filled adjustable bromine dosing product from Complete Pool Controls for domestic hot tubs, and spas in holiday let locations subject to HSG282 guidelines. It is designed to be used in conjunction with Darlly’s SaniStreamTM filter range, or in proprietary in-built dosing units by way of the adaptor clip included with each pack of three Pods. Easy to install and use, the cost-effective

CASE STUDY LEADING LODGE BRAND MAKES IMPROVEMENTS WITH BOWMAN Forest Holidays provide low density forest lodge holidays at ten holiday parks around the UK, and the provision of hot tubs has been an important factor in the success of the business. High occupancy rates together with the increasing demand for the cabins with hot tubs had created two issues – high heating costs for the tubs and the length of time needed to service and re-heat them at change over periods. Traditionally, Forest Holidays has used electricity for heating both its cabins and hot tubs, however the company decided that a change to a more sustainable, lower cost energy

50 June 2019 SPN 49-51_SPN_June_19_Commercial_Spas.indd 50

was required. An LPG solution was chosen and ‘Deerpark’, near Liskard in Cornwall, was selected to be refurbished first. An LPG boiler system was installed in each cabin and hot water is pumped through a Bowman EC805113-1T heat exchanger, which transfers the

heat to the hot tub water circuit. The multicore design of the Bowman unit is extremely efficient and with up to 25kW of heat transfer capability, it can heat a commercial hot tub in around 2-3 hours from cold. After cleaning, the tubs are refilled with a direct source of hot water at 30°C. This is then heated to 38°C. One of the company’s key performance targets was to be able to heat their 1,400 litre hot tubs to full operating temperature in under two hours with the new system, compared to the four hours previously, and results to date show this is being achieved and the new heating system will also deliver significant energy cost savings.

HOT TUBS IN THE COMMERCIAL SECTOR PWTAG’S NEW BOOK ‘HOT TUBS FOR BUSINESS’ AN ESSENTIAL READ

Towards the end of last year, the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) launched their new book, ‘Hot Tubs for Business’. It’s the first of three spa books PWTAG will publish over the next year. The other two will be about commercial spas and domestic spas. PWTAG decided the book should be released first, as domestic-style hot tubs – perhaps badly chosen or installed, poorly maintained or wrongly used – can be lethal when they’re used for business purposes. There have been a number of outbreaks, including fatalities, linked to hot tubs in holiday park rental units, hotel bedrooms, holiday lets, on hire and even on display. The new book draws on the guidance in HSG282: ‘The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems’, but is supplemented by the expertise represented on this group and is presented in the clear and definitive fashion that the many thousands of readers of PWTAG’s ‘Swimming Pool Water’ have appreciated over the years. Anyone operating, or contemplating installing hot tubs as part of a business activity will need this book if they want to be both safe and up-to-date with the latest guidance.

Bromine Pod offers a number of key user benefits over using a floating dispenser or hand dosing chemicals. They include: • Does not require removal while bathers are using the hot tub • Adjustable, allowing steady, controllable release of bromine • Does not require the purchase of additional expensive chemical dosing equipment • Allows easy access to a technician or home owner for inspection and replacement • Compatible with the world’s most popular hot tub brands and models. When it comes to hot tubs in a commercial setting, the Bromine Pod allows compliance with Sec. 76 of HSG282 for hot tubs installed in holiday lets, lodges etc and keeps chemicals away from bathers. Graham Loney, a hot tub owner from Wiltshire, has been using the Bromine Pod for several months. He loves it and says: “Before the pod, I used to do a combination of manual dosing and using a floating dispenser. I think the system is brilliant. The bromine levels are much more controllable

UK based lodges, cottages and holiday parks in particular have embraced hot tubs over recent years and after Wi-Fi, hot tubs are the most requested item from customers researching holidays destinations of this type online” and steadier than before, and you don’t have to take it out before you get in the tub, then have to remember to put it back in again. “Because the Pod is hidden away inside the filter you don’t have to worry about the kids trying to play with it and getting covered in chemicals, and it’s easy enough to check to see how the tablets are being used.”

CLIMACUBE WATER HEAT SYSTEM REDUCES ENERGY COSTS The arrival of the UK designed Climacube Water Heat System is set to revolutionise the commercial hot tub and spa industry, with major UK holiday park operators already using or ordering the new energy efficient design. Backed by a worldwide patent, the stand alone Climacube Water Heat System works off a standard 13 amp power supply and can either be supplied from new or retrofitted to any contemporary hot tub or spa. In test results against current conventional heating systems the Climacube saved on average just under 60% less time to heat up a hot tub and a massive 85.7% reduction in energy cost – great news for both customers and the environment. Managing Director, Stuart Mulchay said: “Our design offers the very latest energy saving heat technology, dramatically reducing running costs, reducing the carbon footprint and enables customers to use their hot tubs and spas all year round, at the desired temperature without the concern of cost.” Climacube has been developed using the latest energy saving technology and is

designed to create hot water at a fraction of the cost associated with conventional methods. By absorbing ambient heat from the air, the highly advanced specialised refrigerant gas, propelled by a silent compressor (similar to a refrigerator but in reverse), enables a quick heat up time with no need to add expensive additional heating elements or hot fill from a boiler. The Climacube only requires 800 watts (less than 3.5 amps) to operate. In tests at an ambient temperature of 5°C the Climacube produced a rise in temperature of 6 degrees per hour in a 1,200 litre hot tub.

ABOVE-GROUND POOLS

Above-ground Pools Offer Affordable Fun Despite tough competition from other wet leisure products, there’s still a lot of demand for above-ground pools in the UK. Available in a range of materials, the idea behind these entry-level solutions is cost effectiveness combined with straightforward installation that can often be achieved by a competent DIYer. The choice on offer has never been wider and this issue, we take a look at a sector that’s surely set to shine again this summer By Andrea Hartshorne

A

bove-ground pools are a product sector which continues to be popular, and that’s not just because of their affordable price tag. Size and flexibility combined in an easy to use and simple to install package also play their part. The beauty of these pools mean that they are within reach of those families who dream of getting on the ‘pool owning ladder’. A little imagination and landscaping can mean that the options available for these versatile units can transform a garden and provide fun and relaxation for owners for a much lower cost than that associated with a full sized swimming pool. Increasingly these high quality pools are sought by families or owners who want to make the pool into a real feature in their garden and they are often sunk into the ground with landscaping, decking and planting really finishing the project off. The ease of building is a big advantage over other types of pools and with installs taking just a few days, above-ground pools are a great optional extra for any home or garden and can often be an impulse buy. With so much going for them, perhaps the

British public will start to look at the more serious above-ground and wooden pools as more of an investment for their families and gardens and if they do, this could be a good year for these products, their accessories and all the extras that go with them.

STRENGTH, FUNCTION AND BEAUTY – CERTIKIN WOODEN POOLS Made of attractive Scandinavian redwood (walls) and Iroko hardwood, the Certikin wooden above-ground pool is robust and shouts quality. The pool has no side buttresses or braces, making it more attractive and compact than other products of its kind. There are no ugly, concreted-in, steel supports which some pools require, making it easier to install. There are three standard sizes, 4.2m x 4.2m, 4.7m x 2.9m and a larger 6m x 4.2m. All the models below 6m x 4.2m are totally free standing and require no ground supports. All models have a steel support beam around the top of the pool underneath the Iroko top rail. Continuing with the high quality, the high specification includes the pool walls, steps, Certikin flow fittings, filtration, maintenance kit, cover

and liner (30 thou mosaic and marbled at no extra cost). Fully foamed insulation covers the bottom and the side walls. For ease, these pools are suitable for both customer self-assembly and installation by pool retailers, whichever is preferred. A 316 stainless steel entry ladder comes with double top tread and an added structural support bar to reduce the liner wear. The sturdy timber exit ladder provides easy access for swimmers and can be simply detached when not in use. All models come with the option of a Walu safety cover – called the Woodstar. This is designed to offer the same level of safety and simplicity for above-ground pools (up to a maximum of 10m x 5m) as it does for in-ground. Secured with ratchets on preangled brackets and rolled with a convenient hand-wheel, the Woodstar is easy to install and operate. Manufactured to the stringent French NF p90-308 safety standard and comfortably holding a weight of 100kg, the Walu offers solar and heat retention benefits and acts as a first class winter cover.

OFFERING ITALIAN STYLE – LAGHETTO FROM ASTRALPOOL AstralPool have been selling Laghetto pools for just over 12 months and their best-selling models are the great looking Playa and Dolcevita models. The market is continuing to grow with the ever-increasing demand for stunning looking, modular and easy build pools that complement the surrounding environment. Through the use of revolutionary technology, the Laghetto team responded with creative insight to the demand for an ever-closer image of Italian design for the garden setting. The Dolcevita reinterprets the concept of an above-ground pool, and created a contemporary solution, with harmony and style. Dolcevita is presented in a collection of three different models – Diva, Rattan and Woody – and regardless of the model chosen, the materials used are of the highest quality and are guaranteed.

SELF-BUILD WOODEN POOLS KITS FROM PLASTICA Plastica’s wooden pools are one of the most affordable range of quality wooden swimming pool kits on the market. They are made of natural high-grade wood that carries a tenyear warranty on the wood structure, even if built in the ground.

Timber Products Manager, Walt who has been working for Plastica for 22 years said: “We have sourced reliable quality wood from the global supply chain, which is precision cut and then pressure treated to the optimum standard. All the structural wood is treated. This pressure treated timber is wood that has been impregnated with wood preservative in the controlled conditions of a vacuum pressure impregnation plant. It is protected against fungal rot and insect attack to ensure a long service life.” Not only are they made of high grade treated redwood timber, they also incorporate a high-quality liner. Plastica have a wide selection of wooden pools, starting with the 3.3 x 3.3 metre Richmond up to the largest flagship pool the Chelsea, measuring 5 x 10 metres. They also produce wooden exercise pools with a readymade cut out for the counter- current system, which they also sell. The 4 metre wooden exercise pools also comes with their new strap system. The straps are stainless steel for long-lasting durability, ensuring antirust and anti-erosion. No steel braces are required, so you can build directly onto any hard surface – this saves time and money on the install. Plastica’s reputation for high quality and reliability is founded on their knowledge and expertise in the industry, built up over 48 years of manufacturing in their UK premises. They take pride in their understanding of the wet leisure market and friendly, helpful and experienced staff.

CASE STUDY THE WOODEN POOL THAT’S A CUT ABOVE THE REST This eye-catching installation of the Certikin wooden pool by Salisbury pool retailer, Spruce Pools, illustrates why the aboveground pool wins out on aesthetics, quality materials and clever design to maintain its position as market leader. The owner of this pool originally requested that Spruce Pools install an in-ground swimming pool. However, the property is surrounded by two rivers, running either side of it, with a water table only 80cm down, ruling out the chance of installing an in-ground pool. The Certikin wooden aboveground pool provided the perfect solution.

Managing Director of Spruce Pools, Jeremy Chalke said: “The installation went very smoothly, we took delivery on Monday lunchtime and the customer was swimming by Friday evening, even though the water temperature was only 20oC. “The customer was absolutely delighted

with the end result and uses the pool from April through to October. This is the third wooden pool that we have installed and each has been so successful that we intend promoting this product heavily in the future.” Jeremy added: “Leaving aside the fact that it is a stylish and superb quality pool, we like the wooden pool because it is Certikin. That means we know it’s solid and of sound construction; we have the assurance that we can easily get spares and we can access the whole raft of service and technical back-up that Certikin offers.” Spruce Pools 01722 323895 www.sprucepools.co.uk

here was a time when most domestic pool or spa owners would not have had the choice of a tiled finish due to cost constraints and commercial installations mainly used tiles for their practicality and longevity but never, ever for their enchanting mood enhancing ambience. All that has changed though and the huge array of spectacular colours and hues can conjure up an oasis of calm, a vibrant jungle themed setting with a spectacular mix of tropical colour, or a truly regal finish for those looking for a stately aspect. With trends constantly changing, tiles can morph into what’s in vogue at the given time for the modernistic pool owner or wellness facility. These days, there are also price points that are attainable to those on a realistic budget. In fact, with so many options for tiles and mosaics now available, if you’re a designer or specifier, the world is your oyster! So why not help your customer conjure up a truly magnificent pool or spa picture and find the perfect finish for their wet leisure project this year.

VitrA Tiles is a well-known brand in 78 countries internationally and is now offering all the benefits of its extensive fully-vitrified tile range to UK customers. VitrA Tiles specialises in the manufacture of tiles for all areas of the wet leisure market. All products for UK distribution are available for immediate delivery via the company’s network of distribution partners. The tiling range for swimming pools includes VitrA ProColor. These tiles are developed for the swimming pool market based on 38 different colours of the RAL colour matching system. This means they can be coordinated with tiling on all aspects of a leisure project from pool tank to foyers and changing rooms. Modularity is another key feature of the range, giving swimming

TILING & MOSAICS pool designers the maximum flexibility in achieving their design aspirations. VitrA Tiles has a new swimming pool brochure, which it launched at SPATEX earlier this year and which contains details of the entire product offering for the pool industry. “The swimming pool sector is a key focus for us,” said Ken Aston, UK & Ireland Sales Manager at VitrA Tiles. “ProColor, with its comprehensive assortment of vitrified tiles in RAL colours, all available for immediate despatch, is a major benefit that we can offer to the UK market.” The company is also demonstrating its commitment to quality in this market with the launch of its latest RIBA-approved CPD presentation, entitled ‘Swimming Pools With a Tiled Finish’. Designed to enhance the understanding of designers and specifiers in this sector, the new CPD describes the main considerations for the specification of tiles for swimming pools, with reference to the relevant British Standards. Technical requirements, safety considerations and aesthetic aspects are all considered within the CPD presentation. The full range of tiles from the VitrA ProColor collection are held in stock, meaning that tiles can be specified and purchased in all colour and size options, for both residential or commercial projects, without the worry of extended lead times.

HIGH-END AMBIENCE WITH PRACTICAL PROPERTIES Ceramique Internationale has built a strong reputation within the leisure industry over the last 45 years, recently contributing to a number of very high profile swimming pool and spa projects. When it comes to pools, spas and leisure centres, tiles play a key role not only practically, but also in terms of creating the right look and feel and as technology has Ceramique Internationale was delighted to work on the Garden Secret Spa at Ringwood Hall Hotel in Chesterfield. The pool tank was fixed with the stunning iridescent Vidrepur Shell mosaics while Amazzonia Dragon Green Grip tiles were used on the surround

progressed, leisure facilities no longer have to settle for utilitarian products. Advancements have led to porcelain tiles perfectly replicating natural stone and this comes with a number of advantages. These include being easier to clean and maintain, while also complying with European anti-slip standards. For high-end swimming pools and spas mosaics remain very popular to create the right ambience, but of course they are also practical, with strong anti-slip properties. Choosing the correct swimming pool tile is not easy and the company can help to make the right choices by providing the right technical information and by sending relevant brochures to help make a selection. They can also help with swimming pool layout ideas to help you create the patterns and designs that will make your customer’s

project unique. Customers may want to mix colours, they may desire a special swimming pool mural, they may want decorative features both in and outside the pool…they have factories that can cater for all swimming pool tile requirements and have samples of most swimming pool tiles held in stock. The tiles specified are going to perform and conform to current safety standards too. All the tiles Ceramique Internationale offer are certificated thus giving designers and customers the confidence to specify them for any pool.

CRANBOURNE STONE – EXPERTISE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE Trading since 2004, Cranbourne Stone is a long established family run business located in Stockbridge, Hampshire. Supplying bespoke stone and man-made materials to award winning pool contractors, the company maintains its valued reputation by sourcing the finest materials from right across the globe. Cranbourne can offer their clients a professional templating service where a full site survey captures all the necessary structural details. Professional site surveys for large and irregular shaped applications are invaluable for capturing the right detail for any project. Cranbourne’s service removes the guesswork and the time it takes to produce physical templates for copings, pool shells, steps and any feature that follows a curved or irregular path. Once the client has approved a layout, the ‘cut files’ are then produced and transferred to either the waterjet or CNC (computer numerical control) for production. Cranbourne’s proactive and personal approach to design is supported by the ‘build your own swimming pool’ tool on their website. Jo Stanfield works alongside husband Howard in the business and offers some practical advice on the subject of pool design and said: “Large format tiles in 10mm porcelain are incredibly popular right now as they are ideal for bespoke swimming pool designs. Using a waterjet, we can produce unlimited creations incorporating a variety of colours and styles. Ten millimetre porcelain also combines the natural stone look with the performance of an engineered product that is resistant to both acid and alkalinebased chemicals. So if it is rich textures and character the customer is looking for, or modern grip finishes, large format tiles in 10mm porcelain are the natural choice.” Cranbourne Stone is a company whose ethos is to supply the highest quality products whilst maintaining a commitment to ethical trading all heavily underlined by a friendly and personal customer service.

Specialising mainly in bespoke pure glass and iridescent mosaic tiles which can be perused on their website, their mosaic ranges are used in prestigious swimming pool and spa projects worldwide. The company offers a free sample service and will happily ship mosaics to any project, anywhere in the world! Historically and traditionally, mosaics and marble have been installed in swimming pool tanks but now ceramic and porcelain tiles have joined the party, resulting in the pool tank now having a spectacular new look. This appears to be partly due to the colour grey making a big impact at home, both indoors and outdoors, over the last few years and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to mosaics for the pool tank, all the marble and lime-stones used in their pool surrounds are suitable to be installed in the pool tank too. DESIGNWORKS TILES – WORKING TO CREATE A DESIGN VISION Designworks Tiles have a wide selection of mosaics and tiles for residential and commercial pools and spas and say that there is no ‘off the shelf’ project. Every one is different, with its own challenges and strengths, lows and highs. Every budget and every client is different too, adding their hopes, desires and expectations to the mix. The constant factor is the huge range of options available. Now that can sometimes be a disadvantage, as too much choice can be overwhelming, without a guiding hand to advise and even gently direct a customer towards their vision. At Designworks Tiles they have a fantastic selection of products for pools and spas but they always start at the beginning – who will be using the pool, what do they want, what do they need, where is the pool located, when do they expect it to be finished and what’s the budget? Take commercial and community pool projects as an example. These are likely to be large pools needing robust products that meet strict safety restrictions, tight budgets and short deadlines. Designworks Pool Bricks (in Gloss and Slip Resistant options) and Mouldings (for steps, edging or even skirting pieces) tick all the boxes and can be seen in schools and

At the other end of the scale their luxury range of Cocktail mosaics add gorgeous shimmering effects. Zen is a collection inspired by natural materials of stone, marble and wood. Introduced last year, Fosfo, their glow-in-the-the dark mosaics, gradually reveal random pieces of luminescence when the lights go off or sunlight fades, turning the pool into an enchanted wonderland. All these

pool mosaics are on the JointPoint System for superior grip and adhesion. Many of the mosaics come with Safe Step options too, allowing for a seamless transition from pool to pool side.

18 October 2019 in halls 1 and 2 of the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue. The fair brings together the entire value chain of swimming pool products for residential and public use, as well as facilities, equipment and accessories related to wellness, spa and fitness. The equipment, products and services designed especially for tourist establishments such as hotels and campsites, health and wellness centres, leisure and sports facilities, will once again be an important part of the overall offering of the fair, with special emphasis on wellness and spa and in aquatic facilities for recreational use. At the same time, the fair will once again welcome the Wellness Experience, a space that creates a wellness centre in which visitors will be able to try out its products, ask experts questions and learn about the latest trends in design, equipment and technology, as well as services and treatments to offer. In addition, the Wellness Experience will also host professional conferences in which over 30 experts related to technical, medical, physiotherapeutic, commercial or management specialities will participate as speakers. Piscina & Wellness Barcelona will also include the 4th edition of the Aquatic Leisure Symposium, an event of interest for hotels, campsites and parks that want to update their aquatic facilities.

EVENTS ROUNDUP AQUANALE 2019 REPORTS EXCELLENT INTERIM RESULTS In March, eight months before the opening of aquanale, the event’s organisers were already reporting outstanding interim results. Almost all the relevant industry players had confirmed that they will be attending the event and more than 80% of the exhibition area had already been reserved. In total, around 350 companies from more than 25 countries are expected to go to Cologne between 5 and 8 November 2019. For the first time, aquanale will present both the private and the public pools segments. “We have removed the public pools segment from the co-located event, FSB, and integrated it into aquanale. The new concept brings together the full spectrum of swimming pools, saunas and wellness facilities to offer visitors a condensed overview, whether they are from the private or the public sector. This benefits all sides, both exhibitors and visitors,” explained Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse. A supporting programme of events rounds off aquanale and creates additional momentum for the industry, above all with the 8th International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum. With the new concept, the industry’s leading international trade fair duo – aquanale and FSB – are strengthening core segments and thereby setting the course for a successful future. As of 2019, aquanale will be located in Halls 6 and 7 – clearly divided into the six familiar theme worlds. Trends for private swimming pool and wellness facilities with saunas and spas, as well as innovations and management concepts for operators of public swimming pools, water parks and thermal baths will be on show here. The advantages are obvious: national and international trade visitors from the fields of public swimming pools, water parks, thermal baths, swimming pool construction, hotels, architecture and planning firms and from the sauna, sanitation, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), spa and fitness sectors gain a comprehensive overview of the

entire spectrum of products all condensed into just two exhibition halls.

INDUSTRY SECTORS COLLABORATE AT WORLD AQUATIC HEALTH™ CONFERENCE This year, the World Aquatic Health™ Conference (WAHC) will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia at the Williamsburg Lodge during 16-18 October and when it convenes for its 16th annual event, aquatic professionals from all over will take a deep dive into an ongoing effort vital to the public health – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). The WAHC has long hosted the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC), and this year the conference will devote an entire series of talks to discussion of the MAHC. Presentations on efforts to develop and promote adoption of the MAHC will feature speakers from CDC, CMAHC officials, and operators directly involved in MAHC

implementation. Douglas Sackett, Executive Director of the CMAHC, and Dr Michael Beach, Associate Director for Healthy Water with CDC, will also host a MAHC listening session where there will be a review and discussion on how the MAHC is influencing aquatics. Additionally, they will host a MAHC session dedicated to air quality in indoor aquatic facilities and how the MAHC and CMAHC are the vehicles to change aquatic facility design and operation to improve indoor air quality. A topic that has gained momentum in recent conferences, MAHC sessions will dovetail with talks in other tracks, including a series of presentations on improving water and air quality in aquatic facilities. During these talks, participants will explore the latest scientific findings on filtration, disinfection by products, and preventing chemical exposures in facilities. Additionally, facility operators, public health officials, and service professionals can add to their skill sets and extend their networks by taking advantage of pre- and

HOT TUBS AND MORE AT HOLIDAY PARK & RESORT INNOVATION SHOW Last summer, rather than taking a trip abroad, more than half of the British public stayed on home soil for their holiday and this staycation trend shows no signs of slowing down, especially with most investors and economists predicting a weak pound in the years that follow Brexit. So what does this all mean for UK holiday destinations? That in order to thrive and survive, they need to find new ways to separate themselves from the increasing competition. Enter Holiday Park & Resort Innovation – Europe’s leading marketplace for owners, managers and entrepreneurs to source the very best advice, services, information and products needed to transform their business into the perfect holiday getaway for both UK residents and tourists from further afield. Taking place on 6 and 7 November, the industry’s leading experts and most innovative suppliers will come under one roof at Birmingham’s NEC to provide forwardthinking holiday businesses with everything

needed to enthrall and entertain their guests all year round… and keep them coming back for more. Each year, the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation team pulls out all the stops to provide visitors with the finest line up of industry speakers. A comprehensive schedule offers unrivalled insight into every aspect of the holiday business sector – helping owners and operators to put, and keep, their holiday parks or resorts firmly on the map. A number of speakers from the wet leisure sector have already confirmed their attendance at this year’s show and they will cover a number of subjects based primarily around owning and running hot tubs within the holiday sector. Unsurprisingly, many of the wet leisure exhibitors also come from the hot tub and spa sector, but water play companies are also present too. With five months still to go until the exhibition, there’s still plenty of time for a whole host of other companies to confirm their participation at the two-day Midlandsbased event.

SPATEX 2020 IS UNDER STARTER’S ORDERS As the UK’s only dedicated wet leisure Show, SPATEX is proud to attract visitors from a whole variety of sectors – pool builders and installers, retailers, designers and architects, distributors, general builders and

manufacturers. Plus, professionals from local authorities, leisure centres, hotel and holiday complexes, independent schools, animal hydrotherapy centres, dive centres and many more! For those that don’t know the event, visitors to it are able to meet over 100 leading industry suppliers – from both home and abroad – and see the latest products and services in 150 different wet leisure product categories. Next year’s event has got off to a flying start with requests for even bigger stands from returning companies and a slew of new exhibitor names – all a healthy reflection of the industry and a testament to the success of this year’s three-day event. Helping to kickstart the campaign is a bright easy-to-navigate SPATEX website (www. spatex.co.uk) featuring new graphics, up-tothe minute information on exhibitors and all you need to know about the Show, whether you’re a visitor or exhibitor. Information on seminar topics and speakers will be added as it becomes available. Entering her 21st year, Michele Bridle, organiser of the UK wet leisure industry’s only dedicated Show, said: “We have got lots of new ideas for the 2020 Show – our exhibitors and visitors can, of course, expect all the usual ingredients but with an added twist which will make it look entirely refreshed. We will be releasing details shortly.” SPATEX 2020 takes place 28-30 January at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.

OPINION

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels “All is fair in love and war and, well, pretty much everything else it seems. In fact, do we even know what ‘fair’ means anymore?” asks Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast

A

ctually, I think we seem to have run straight past the concept of ‘fair’ and left it behind us in the dust like a long distance runner fuelled on a cocktail of steroids and stimulants. It isn’t the taking part, it’s the winning that counts, and that now seems to be the mantra from sport and politics through to business. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was a charming 1988 film where Steve Martin and Michael Caine played two conmen, loveable rogues hurting no one other than themselves. They were the south of France equivalent of ‘Del Boy Trotter’ and we looked kindly on their ducking and diving and feckless attempts to make a dishonest quid. But the year before, Gordon Gekko had told us that ‘greed was good’ and we listened to that, and took it to heart. “The point is,” said Michael Douglas in ‘Wall Street’, “greed is right, greed works.”

GIMEE, GIMEE, GIMEE The stock market and the ballot box began to tell us that the end justified the means and once we bought into that the brakes were off and, it seems to me, we have slid downhill ever since. The question that gets asked isn’t, ‘are we right to do this?’ but, ‘will we get caught if we do this?’ Five banks have just been fined £935m for clubbing together to rig the foreign exchange market. Banks. Thirty years ago banks were places that criminals broke in to, not places they worked at. And it certainly seems as if advances in technology have outstripped any thinking we might have done about the moral implications of the same. Facebook started as a way for college kids to stay in touch with each other. Two point three billion members and over US$600bn later it faces moral questions that it seems completely incapable of answering. Other Silicon Valley giants like Amazon and Uber seem to be much better at looking after their bottom line than caring for the people who work for them. The sheer scale of the numbers that web based companies can generate seems to blind them to the fact that those numbers represent people. Treat an individual badly and you are a poor businessman, do the same to ten million and you are an internet entrepreneur.

GREEDY FOR VOTES Politicians are meant to reflect the will of the people and it hasn’t taken Westminster or Washington long to catch on to the new

I think we seem to have run straight past the concept of ‘fair’ and left it behind us in the dust like a long distance runner fuelled on a cocktail of steroids and stimulants” morality, or lack of it. ‘Post-truth politics’ was a phrase coined in 2015. Social media and the ability to publish, share and promote content that appeared to be news – to have been checked and proven to be true when in fact it hadn’t – helped politicians and political parties say pretty much whatever they wanted. It all came to a head in 2018 when Cambridge Analytica was caught misusing Facebook data to influence the US elections. Of course, politicians value the human touch and are perfectly capable of lying for themselves. In today’s political arena, opinions are presented as facts and history is rewritten so quickly that the ink doesn’t have time to dry. Whatever side of the Brexit divide you sit on, we can all agree that facts on the subject have been few and far between.

SHOW ME THE MONEY And what seems to drive most of this dirty rotten behaviour is money, lots and lots of money. Arms companies’ reckless sale of weapons to countries that flout humanitarian law. The stock market throws a fit if profits aren’t up year on year. VW install cheating software to pass emissions tests. Americans buy their way in to the top universities. Elizabeth Holmes was the youngest selfmade female billionaire thanks to her blood-

testing company, until it was discovered to be a total fraud. The Fyre festival. The Jeremy Kyle show. The list of behaviour that no one should be proud of is almost endless.

TOXIC EVERYTHING Why has this all come about? In the late 90s the media began to glorify the machismo and aggression of avaricious management styles. ‘The Art of War’ by Sun Tzu was read as a training guide for executives and managers and people were encouraged to believe that business was a zero sum game. The fact the some villains were successful was taken to mean that you had to be a scoundrel to succeed.

BUT BUSINESS ISN’T WAR… …and you don’t need to be aggressive to get on. Golden Coast has been in business for 42 years, our word is our bond and we are proud to have established and developed our business on the solid bedrock of good values and service. Does that make us old fashioned? Well, if it does, I’m happy for us to be seen that way. I can be proud of what we do and I sleep well at night. I think that’s fair.
