to network with industry colleagues and expand your knowledge with a wide variety of Workshops and Seminars. For me personally, it’s the opportunity to network with a wide range of people that really provides an insight into the year ahead. Feedback from both visitors and exhibitors is the key to getting a balanced view.

There’s no doubt that last year was another good year for the majority of the trade and that’s despite the lack of any real summer to write home about. For me, that in itself tells its own story. After all, it wasn’t all that long ago that a poor summer would have spelled disaster for many companies across the UK but that doesn’t appear to have been the case at all and a more resilient industry is a great sign for all those involved within it. But that was last year and with the Christmas and New Year break now well and truly behind us, 2015 already seems like a distant memory. With January now in full swing, it’s now time to look forward and as an industry, thoughts are focused on the new season and year ahead. So what does 2016 have in store for the wet leisure industry? Will it be yet another good year? Of course, a good year depends heavily on the quality of the products or services a company supplies and for 2016, there again seems to be a lot of innovation around. SPATEX – which returns to the Jaguar Exhibition Hall in Coventry between 31 January and 2 February – is a great place to see a lot of what’s on offer. Keeping abreast of the latest products, technologies and trends is a must for any successful business and the three day show provides this, plus the opportunity

In this issue, we feature a full preview of the annual trade show and take a closer look at what’s on offer and what visitors can expect to find when they arrive at this year’s event. It’s shaping up to be one of the best ever and with a 20th anniversary to celebrate, looks like one not to be missed. SPN will have a stand at SPATEX so we hope to see many of our readers there. Also in this issue, we put the spotlight on a number of other key topics for the new season and have features that cover water treatments and systems, UV systems, the latest hot tub models, ten great pool cleaners plus pool and spa pumps. Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams looks at how the industry is increasingly being viewed as ‘wellness’ while there’s expert advice from Certikin’s Graham Kneale on H&V too. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus information from the STA concerning Legionella. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad. So with this issue of SPN covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading it and here’s to another successful year!

Expert Collaboration Creates Amazing Pool And Garden Landscape This contemporary garden design was a great example of collaboration between two experts in their industries – calmness meets serenity in a sensational luxury garden which includes spectacular planting which complements the stunning outdoor swimming pool. The outdoor space has a contemporary feel with the introduction of large format porcelain within the pool and limestone surrounding the pool to provide a smooth and endless finish. The design is geometrical using the lines of the borders, steps to the pool, copings and courtyard, however, the artistic eye of the client required a dreamy watercolour so material selection was essential to create the right balance. Andy Carr, Commercial Director at Guncast Swimming Pools said: “Working with the large format tiles in the pool shell and including some great lighting additions brought the luxury to the design, while keeping on track with the style of the outdoor space. The large tiles encourage the eye to view the swimming pool as one large entity.” The design was to be defined, elegant and more importantly that the inside of the house blends with the outside space. The grey porcelain lining of the swimming pool blended with the fossil pearl limestone,

serene coping detail and key lighting to bring this elegant pool to life. There are strong topiary shapes both in the courtyard and pool surrounds to accentuate the chic contemporary feel to the geometric design. Katja Griffiths of Design by Katja Ltd commented on the project: “This unique opportunity to create an outdoor space merging the strong geometrical shapes with soft watercolour tones was a great challenge for me. Not only was the primary focus on the swimming pool, but planting and courtyard

was required to blend perfectly with the new extension. These type of challenges are perfect for me, as it pushes the boundaries of more traditional landscaping.” Design by Katja Ltd 07787 923434 www.designbykatja.com Guncast Swimming Pools 01798 343 725 www.guncast.com

Swimtime Dives Into Sports Direct Contract Swimtime – the UK’s largest swimming lesson franchise business – has been appointed to provide swimming lessons in Sports Directowned fitness clubs. Following the successful launch of the sportswear giant’s budget gym chain in 2014, Swimtime will start providing swimming lessons for its fitness clubs from the start of 2016. With 25 of Sports Direct’s 28 fitness clubs operating a swimming pool, Swimtime will initially deliver more than 1,200 lessons per week under the contract, including group lessons, one-to-ones and ‘Swimbabies’. Mel Crossland, Head of Sales & Marketing at Sports Direct, said: “Swimtime has a proven track record, and is a trusted brand with the highest standards of compliance and swimming lesson management, so we’re confident that they will deliver exceptional lessons to children and adults alike. “The health and wellbeing of our members is of the utmost importance and as Swimtime is such an established brand – which already

6 February 2016 SPN 6-11_SPN_Feb_16_News_General_Rev.indd 6

operates across the whole of the UK – we can be sure that they have the skills and infrastructure to provide an excellent service across all our existing and future centres.” The contract is expected to create more than 100 jobs for swimming teachers and an additional 3,500 children’s swimming lessons across the UK in the first year. “Learning to swim is such an important life skill, so we’re keen to help bring affordable and accessible swimming lessons to all – and make them as fun and enjoyable as they can be. We currently provide more than 17,000 lessons a week across the UK, and are excited at the prospect of increasing this number with the addition of lessons in Sport Direct’s fitness clubs,” added Swimtime Director, Barry Price. He continued: “We’re particularly looking forward to expanding our offering of adult swimming lessons, which have become increasingly popular in recent years.” Swimtime 0333 200 1717 www.swimtime.org

Brand New Oldham Leisure Centre Opens Its Doors The new £15m Oldham Leisure Centre is complete and opened its doors to the public in December. Local residents and visitors were able to take their first look inside the borough’s flagship sports and leisure venue which now offers better facilities than ever before – helping to put the town on the national sporting map and ensure an Olympic legacy lives on. Oldham will now be able to hold regional and televised competitions like never before with these enhanced facilities which includes a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool of county-level standard. The new centre also has Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) accreditation – which means it can cater for the needs of disabled and nondisabled people. Construction of the building was achieved on schedule and came a month after the nearby £8m Royton Sports Centre opened its doors – completing a new and fresh, local, leisure estate the public can be proud of. In early December, Councillor Jean Stretton (Oldham Council Deputy Leader) took part in an exclusive tour of the centre, alongside Stuart Lockwood (OCL Chief Executive), Anthony Dillon (Willmott Dixon’s Northern

Managing Director) and other representatives. Councillor Stretton said: “This is a fantastic moment for Oldham as this amazing facility is a key element in the town’s transformation. “Oldham Leisure Centre will not only serve as a first-class facility for residents and visitors but it will be an important community and social venue – and one that will have the correct specifications to attract major regional and national competitions in some sports. “We made a commitment following the London Olympics that we would provide facilities that would improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. We also pledged that the new facilities would create local jobs and a large number of residents and local firms have been involved in their construction. “It has been a huge team effort to reach this milestone and I’d like to congratulate all that have been involved in creating this stunning centre.”

LSPC Becomes An Official Partner of Austria’s Berndorf Bäderbau Berndorf Bäderbau, one of Europe’s premier stainless steel swimming pool manufacturers, has appointed London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC) as an official partner and will collaborate with LSPC on pool projects in London and the Home Counties. With the popularity of stainless steel pools on the increase, this new partnership puts LSPC in a strong position to grow business by offering clients elegant bespoke stainless steel pools that are renowned for quality and durability. Stainless steel pools can be designed in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and there is an increasing trend towards long and narrow

pools, often with wellness and relaxation features such as massage facilities and loungers being incorporated. Berndorf Bäderbau has been at the forefront of technological developments in stainless steel pools and has more than 50 years’ experience in the pool business. Their pools have a reputation for total reliability – pools are absolutely watertight and deliver optimum hygienic conditions thanks to optimal hydraulics. Jamie Smith, Managing Director at LSPC said: “Berndorf and LSPC share a passion for creating pools that exceed clients’ expectations. Not only will we be able to access first class products, the Berndorf team will be working closely with our designers, the architects and their clients to achieve that goal. Berndorf will be bringing its considerable technical knowhow to projects, from the design stage through to installation. “Stainless steel has inherent properties which make it ideal for pools, for example, it is lighter in weight than concrete so it’s particularly attractive for some installations and the build time is shorter, enabling clients to have their pool faster. There are also cost benefits both in terms of the upfront investment in the pool and low running costs.” London Swimming Pool Company 020 8605 1255 www.londonswimmingpools.com

NEWS SERCO CHANGES PLAN TO DISPOSE OF LEISURE BUSINESSES In December, Serco Group announced that it would no longer be seeking to dispose of its Environmental Services and Leisure businesses. In a Stock Exchange Announcement, the company advised: “The recent agreement to dispose of the offshore private sector BPO operations has prompted us to review the previously stated intention to also dispose of our Environmental Services and Leisure businesses. Our conclusion is that, for both strategic and financial reasons, the interests of the Group will be best served by retaining these businesses within the portfolio. In common with the rest of the Group, they provide frontline services to public sector customers. In particular, they serve Local Authorities in the UK, to whom we provide a number of other services and we feel that there is real merit in retaining a broad offering to these important customers. Furthermore, the Environmental Services and Leisure businesses have continued to perform well both financially and operationally, and have a strong pipeline of opportunities.”

OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS JOIN CAMPAIGN TO SAVE LONDON POOLS Former Olympic swimming stars Sharron Davies and Duncan Goodhew have branded plans to close up to 16 pools across London as “appalling” and have lent their names to a campaign to save them. In our October edition, SPN highlighted the closure of a Northwich pool by new owners Pure Gym following the purchase of multiple sites from LA Fitness last year. We highlighted that more facilities may be affected as a result of the change in ownership and now the capital’s pools are suffering with Pure Gym already closing seven of its London pools and campaigners against the closures claim at least nine more are at risk.

Concerns Expressed Over PAS 520 Over recent weeks, the STA has been inundated with enquiries from its members about the publication of PAS 520 ‘Safeguarding 0 to 4 year old children within the teaching of swimming, including any associated professional photography – Code of practice’ document which was launched in October. Whilst STA fully support the development of British Standards on the regulation of swimming and professional underwater photography, they understand and share their members’ concerns over some of the points mentioned in the PAS document. STA wholly agree that there should be a policy and that much of the information contained in PAS is perfectly reasonable; however they concur with their members that there are several points that are unnecessary and impracticable for all types of swim school operations – the guidance is skewed towards one style of operation and not reflective of the

different needs of the swim school market. Therefore, in the best interests of their members and the wider sector, they are working to address these concerns. In the meantime, to help them understand more about individual concerns, they are inviting industry colleagues to sign a petition (online at www.happybabyswimming. org) and add comments regarding PAS 520 (all petition comments and signatures can be done anonymously). STA then hope that with a united voice the sector can then all work towards establishing a new/revised policy document that is representative of the baby swimming market as a whole; large and small swim schools, franchises and leisure centres. Guildford Pool Gets Interactive Makeover Hippo Leisure has converted the toddler and children’s pool at Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre into an exciting interactive splash pool. It is aimed at introducing toddlers and the under 6s to a water play and learning experience that they can enjoy with their parents. An interactive arch which features a waterball and a mast which can house up to four arms provides endless low level fun for those that are new to water play and helps develop water confidence, while a second water arch featuring a range of high level surprises and anticipatory fun including tipping buckets, water wheels and shark showers is ideal for slightly older children that wish to take their water confidence to higher levels. A mini splash pad is a big hit with all ages and features three in-ground jets which will soak children as they manipulate the water flow. There

are also a series of mirrored portholes and a snake squirt that gently sprays water whilst also forming a barrier between the splash pad and the pool. An old whale feature was removed and replaced with a selection of large and small fish squirts which are all bright, vibrant and visually appealing to children of all ages. A raised finger spray planter was also rejuvenated by replacing existing rocks with two shark squirts which fill a number of cascading channels. Children love sliding down the mini flume and splashing into the plunge pool. Toddlers and those with less confidence have fun developing their learning with a series of interactive play panels which provide a barrier between the plunge pool and poolside. The centre piece of the development is a colourful GRP lighthouse which features an acrylic window and an LED beacon for added visual impact. The lighthouse replaced an old tree house feature and is clad in artificial rocks for realistic aquatic theming and younger children will enjoy sliding down a toddler slide which snakes around the lighthouse. The project was one of several undertaken at Guildford Spectrum in recent years and has been designed to facilitate future expansion when required. In the first six months after installation, visitor numbers increased by more than 100% year-on-year. Hippo Leisure 01752 771740 www.hippoleisure.com

Safety Testing From BRIO Set To Make Pools Safer BRIO Group Ltd, offer specialised safety tests to check for any possible risk of Suction Entrapment and Hair Entanglement hazards. There is a risk of suction entrapment present when a swimmer, who blocks the drain cover of a suction intake, is exposed to a negative gauge pressure (vacuum). How high this negative gauge pressure is, depends on several factors: • The number of suction intakes of the circulation system; • The number of pumps and their position relative to the pool; • The flow rate of water at various locations in the pipe system; • The distances the water travels through pipes between the suction intakes and the pumps.

intakes

For this reason, the measurement of the negative pressure is a necessity. Only by measuring suction outlets do you know for sure whether drainage

BRIO Group Ltd 028 7930 0561 www.briogroup.co.uk

in existing pools are safe. For the construction of new pools the measurement of the negative gauge pressure is a useful tool to evaluate safety. Hair entrapment is a risk with all outlets, within a swimming pool environment. The safety of these outlets has been highlighted through many UK cases, where people are injured due to their hair becoming trapped within a pool outlet point. Hair entrapment testing is a pre-requisite in the PWTAG Code of Practice for UK swimming pools, and BRIO are the first company in the UK and Ireland to offer this testing service.

Polyflor Helps Restore Lido Ponty To Its Former Glory Polysafe safety flooring from UK manufacturer Polyflor was recently used to help return Lido Ponty, the National Lido of Wales in Pontypridd, to its former glory as part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s £6.3m restoration project. Lido Ponty is a Grade II listed lido, originally built in 1927, which has now been transformed into a modern outdoor pool and adventure play park by main contractors Kier Construction. The Polysafe Arena PUR and Polysafe Modena PUR safety flooring ranges which offer sustainable slip resistance in accordance with HSE guidelines were installed by flooring contractors CS Flooring Solutions at Pontypridd’s new visitor attraction. Suitable for busy commercial environments where there is a high level of footfall, Polysafe Arena PUR in the Cement design was installed in The Waterside café and the visitor centre where the lido’s rich heritage is showcased, whilst Polysafe Modena PUR safety flooring in the Blue Quartz and Andesite shades was used in back of house zones and the centre’s busy reception area. Both of these design-led safety flooring ranges incorporate clear aluminium oxide safety particles through the performance layer of the vinyl which are virtually invisible to the naked eye, ensuring an attractive yet safe floor finish for use in commercial or residential areas. The Polysafe

Arena range replicates on-trend stone, textile and abstract designs whilst the Polysafe Modena collection features a sophisticated micro-granite decoration in a selection of neutral and bright shades. Amy Griffiths, Assistant Site Manager on the Lido Ponty project said: “We are delighted with the finished result at Lido Ponty where the flooring perfectly complements and enhances the new look of the lido. Thanks to the Polysafe Arena and Modena ranges we were able to create a safe and sustainable slip resistant environment for visitors without having to compromise on our creative vision for the interior design.” Polyflor Ltd 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Virgin Active Teams Up With Cap2 To Take Children’s Programming Online Virgin Active has teamed up with Cap2 Solutions to take it’s children’s programming online. The health club chain will be managing all its 4,500 weekly swimming classes via the CoursePro course management software. Endorsed by the ASA, CoursePro removes paperwork processes from teachers and coaches, who can take registers and assess pupils, as well as log notes and achievements in real-time using an iPod. It simplifies the administration process, reduces pressure on staff, improves customer service and aids retention. Virgin Active, which has more than 23,000 juniors on its swimming programme, started working with Cap2 in September 2014 to bring the programming online. The software is now

running at 15 sites and will be active in all 71 health clubs with junior programming by July 2016. Glen Heidke, Head of Junior Programming at Virgin Active explained: “CoursePro has brought us into the modern age. The software enables fast and accurate administration, course co-ordination, up to date reporting and parental interaction via a HomePortal, where customers can view teacher feedback, re-enrol and pay for future lessons.” CoursePro’s easy to understand reporting will provide up to date information on joiners, leavers, the movement of pupils between classes and class occupancy in a graph or table, and can also be set against monthly targets. The roll out to all clubs with children’s programming in July 2016 is set to coincide with CoursePro being fully integrated with Virgin Active’s membership management software so that all membership aspects can be managed with just one log in. Alex Davison, Sales Development Manager at Cap2 Solutions said: “CoursePro will take Virgin Active’s children’s programmes to the next level, as their instructors will be able to spend less time recording attendance and attainment, and more time improving lesson delivery and interacting with their classes. The management of new bookings, re-enrolments and the movement of pupils within the system will also be much quicker and easier.” Cap2 Solutions 0845 504 8511 www.cap2.co.uk

NEWS POOL TO CLOSE FOR MAINTENANCE JUST SIX MONTHS AFTER £650K REFURB A swimming pool in Guisborough is due to be closed for “two to three weeks” for maintenance – just six months after a £650k revamp. The pool, run by Everyone Active on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Council was closed for six months while it underwent a refit, including a new outer structure to house the swimming pool. The cost of improvements included funds of £260,000 from Redcar & Cleveland Council plus £150,000 from Sport England and an activity day was held in July 2015 to celebrate the refurbishment. Cllr Carl Quartermain, cabinet member for jobs, skills and leisure, said: “I am disappointed that this situation has arisen so soon after the leisure centre has reopened after refurbishment, however, it was necessary that this maintenance work was done as soon as possible.”

TALKS HELD OVER SAVING MUCHLOVED DERBY POOL Talks have been held that could be the first step towards saving Derby’s much-loved Moorways swimming pool which faces closure by the end of March if the city council can’t find another organisation to take it on. The council has said the running and maintenance costs of the pool are no-longer affordable as it aims to save millions in the face of Government cuts. However a councillor has revealed that they are in negotiations with local sports clubs and other organisations that could see them take over the running of the site, but wasn’t able to advise who they were. Derby City Council said in late 2014 that it was expected to close the pool but it found money to give it a one-year reprieve.

Luton Leisure Centre Pool Gets Complete Tiling Makeover Cheshire based Tiling & Pool Projects (UK) Ltd were recently approached by a Local Borough Council to rectify the problems they were experiencing in one of their swimming pools. After meeting on site and discussing the options available, references were provided so that the client could be sure they were dealing with a professional company and soon after that the decision was made by the client that the pool would be drained and all the existing tiles would be removed and replaced. Tiling & Pool Projects completed the works in the

time scale allowed and upon completion the client was extremely pleased with the finished result. “We were confident we chose Tiling & Pool Projects to carry out the works due to the excellent references we had back from previous customers who had used them for similar projects. The team of men who carried out the works were fantastic from start to finish and any problems that did occur were dealt with and fixed quickly’’ said the operations manager. Tony Crank, Managing Director of Tiling & Pool Projects (UK) Ltd said: “The contract had a few problems during the works,

but this can be expected when dealing with swimming pool repairs/ refurbishments. The client and his staff were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble during the contract with regards to quick decisions.“ The company has carried out works across the UK for many local authorities, schools, hotels, health clubs and private clients has recently become an applicator of Aquabright/Ecofinish, so is also able to offer an alternative to tiling or marblite pool finishes. A New Model In The Overseas Supply Of Water Treatment Products

Cheshire based IBD Water Treatment is a specialist supplier of water treatment and handling equipment to customers in a number of countries. However, unlike conventional distributors, they carry no stock – thus eliminating a significant overhead. Instead, equipment is supplied to order for specific projects. The company discuss the requirement with the contractor, consultant or project manager, clarifying the specification and giving guidance to ensure that the equipment is technically compatible with the proposed system and suitable for the environment in which it is to be installed. Armed with a clear equipment specification, IBD obtains proposals from one or more manufacturers on criteria of quality and appropriateness to the proposed operating environment. Once the selection has been made and approved by the customer, IBD will purchase it from the manufacturer and sell it to the customer. The preferential prices that IBD obtains from

manufacturers enables IBD to cover its costs and still maintain a competitive final selling price. The purchaser of the equipment can rely on IBD’s engineering and water treatment experience to ensure the suitability of the equipment and IBD’s presence in Western Europe allows easy access to a large number of manufacturers of specialised water treatment and handling equipment. Their involvement at the start end of the supply chain speeds up dialogue and helps clarify areas of uncertainty well before any order is placed. The manufacturer benefits as IBD’s location within the EU virtually transforms what would otherwise have been a more complex export transaction into a domestic one. This saves any costs associated with prospecting for and securing equipment sales in unfamiliar overseas markets. IBD Water Treatment Limited 01625 501576 www.ibdwatertreatment.eu

‘My NIVEKO Pool’ Option Showcases Customer Projects Online From the home page on the NIVEKO company website, there is an option where visitors can choose ‘My NIVEKO Pool’, which is a section that includes genuine stories from customers who decided to buy a NIVEKO pool and were more than happy with the results. One short and to the point story was sent by Mr Ledward, a NIVEKO customer who is based in the UK, who said: “We’re very pleased with the NIVEKO pool installed by Lewis Salvidge (HTP Inc Ltd). We wanted a pool that was easily maintained for swim training throughout the year, was good fun as a family pool and looked great and the NIVEKO pool certainly does all this. Before buying we looked at other pools but the quality of the finish particularly with the sunken inspection chamber and the convenient automatic rollers and lights and the good reputation for after sales service meant we bought a NIVEKO pool and we weren’t disappointed.” You can learn more about this particular installation, see further images, 3D

Waterco Launch Their Most Versatile Commercial Pump To Date New for 2016, Waterco have released the Hydrostar Plus commercial pump. Purpose built for aquatic facilities, water parks and large commercial swimming pools the Hydrostar Plus pump offers unique construction and several advantages in comparison with custom made steel strainers. It is constructed from an injection moulded glass reinforced thermoplastic that possesses superior mechanical and chemical resistance compared to steel. Its pump body is manufactured utilising state of the art engineering plastic moulding for extra strength. Its seamless one-piece consists of no welds or seams or special tank linings which can corrode or electrolyse. Fibreglass thermoplastic does not rust or corrode and is able to withstand damage from many types of water treatment chemicals. In addition, the pump itself weighs less than its steel counterparts without any sacrifice in strength and durability. Their weight makes them easier to ship to the job site and easier

to install. Hydrostar Plus pumps are equipped with 6” flanged suction ports and 4” flanged discharge ports, purpose built for aquatic facilities, water parks and large commercial swimming pools. Following feedback from the industry, Waterco Europe strives to continue supplying the industry with the very latest in product innovation, and the versatility of the Hydrostar Plus is no exception, incorporating the latest technology in design and construction to produce a high performance self-priming pump suitable for a wide range of commercial applications.

Certikin’s Ground-breaking Launch Brings Filtration Into The 21st Century Always at the vanguard of innovation, Certikin is proud to announce that it is the world’s exclusive distributor of OC-1 Filtration Media® a trailblazing new product which, through its unique action and performance, is set to revolutionise the wet leisure market. Embracing the recent advances in pump technology and maximising the benefits of variable speed pumps, the ingenious OC-1 Filtration Media works through settlement, as opposed to the traditional method of entrapment. The new British manufactured filtration media has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1 Filtration Media it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson says: “This is a very exciting launch for Certikin, because of OC-1’s unique benefits, we anticipate a massive demand for this product. Over the last few years there have been major advances in pool technology. None more so than OC-1 which promises to modernise and transform water filtration totally, which has largely remained static since before Roman times.” Jon Maskell, Certikin International Business Manager says: “We are excited in Export to sell OC-1, as it is now possible to ship filters around the world with the media already inside. This saves transportation costs and also time and effort on site.

The pool market has been moving towards energy efficient ‘green’ products and OC-1 fits perfectly into this trend. The benefits of using OC-1 are enormous, it truly is a revolutionary product.” OC-1’s outstanding key benefits: • Reduces energy consumption – OC-1 maintains constant flow rates, even when the media becomes dirty. No downtime is required for heating/salt chlorinators/heat pumps going out on low flow. The constant flow means pumps can be run at lower speeds, thus saving energy. • Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass. • Reduced requirement for backwashing and

AquaChek Strips Included In Golden Coast’s Latest Essentials Collection While water quality is essential to a healthy and pleasant pool or spa experience, the effort of maintenance should never detract from the user’s enjoyment. That’s the thinking behind Golden Coast’s decision to add two, new simple-to-use testing products from AquaChek to its range of water testing options. AquaChek White uses titrator strips to measure salt (sodium chloride) in the range from 400 to 7,000 ppm, giving an accurate reading within minutes. When using a salt generator system, it’s essential that the salt level is monitored so that the right amount of chlorine is produced to keep the water hygienically clean. AquaChek Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 24-27_SPN_Feb_16_Prod_News.indd 27

strips need only be dipped in the water for a moment, and within a few seconds TDS is reliably determined. TDS is a measure of everything that becomes dissolved in the water, from numerous sources. Excessive TDS not only contributes to water cloudiness but makes it difficult to balance chemicals and can result in increased use of chlorine. Ideally, water should be tested at least twice a week for salt and TDS, but thanks to AquaChek strips this is now a quick and easy task.

a more efficient backwash – Reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating. There is no need to backwash on start up with new installations. • Lightweight – Can even be shipped inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install. • Less Maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment. • Filters to all International standards. • Suitable for ALL installations – domestic or commercial, outdoor or indoor, new iInstalls or existing filters. • Recyclable at end of product life. • Payback typically 6-12 months. OC-1 has been independently tested by Cranfield University, one of the leading research universities in the UK. Certikin International Ltd 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

PRODUCT NEWS

Golden Coast Brings Pool Mood-changing Power Within Reach Of All

The Next Generation Swimming Pool Water Filtration System According to Total Pool Filtration, when it comes to pool water filtration, all ‘so called new’ sand, glass and pre coat filter systems are on the whole just adaptations of Victorian technology. However, the successful application of ‘membrane’ technology to swimming pool water represents a truly revolutionary change in filtration. The company has teamed up with the Danish business Provital to market their ceramic microfiltration system in UK. Provital have already successfully used it on many pools in Scandinavia including the largest public leisure pool centre in Norway. The Provital microfiltration system offers 3 micron filtration and complete removal of cryptosporidium ocysts in a single pass. Providing crystal clear water, the system reduces THMs and a minimum amount of biologically active material held in the filters. Backwashing of the system is fully automatic and is done a minimum of at least once a day. The system also saves water, chemicals and energy

with up to 80% savings on water for back washing and only 75 litres of water used per unit on each back wash which results in no measurable drop in pool temperature when backwashing The Provital system also offers additional lower costs too. The size of balance tanks needed is reduced and with a 60% smaller footprint compared to traditional solutions, it will also reduce costs on new builds. The modular designed system is easy to fit and retrofit and will fit through a single plant room door and only requires 2.4 metre headroom. Fully automated and computer controlled the system requires no on site operator input. Water quality and all other components in the system are constantly monitored over the internet – should any problem occur, the system will send an alarm by SMS or e-mail.

It’s long been known that colour-changing lighting can add an extra dimension of interest to a pool and alter its ambience from day to day or even minute to minute. To bring that enhancement of the pool experience within easy reach of all, Golden Coast has added the GAME Colour Changing Pool Wall Light to its latest Essentials catalogue. Just four inches in diameter, the LED underwater lighting unit generates an impressively bright 29 lumens. It can be simply attached to both steel-walled and soft-sided pools, with no need for tools or wiring. Once in place, the advance remote control can be easily operated to set up a wide variety of backgrounds and colour-changing water shows using the 16 colours and four colour modes available. Other economical and easy-to-use lighting options in the catalogue include the surface-floating and battery-operated Underwater Light Show, which projects variable patterns onto the pool sides and bottom, and the larger Underwater Light Starship, which adds rotation and a larger number of dynamic effects. For spas and hot tubs there is the 28-LED STARBurst system, which can transform the environment with waves of intense colour or shimmering hints of opalescence. ITS Europe Launches Improvements To eXact iDip® App Industrial Test Systems (ITS) Europe, the creators of some of the most innovative water quality testing solutions, have added automatic calculations to their smart device application. Calculations for Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) and Magnesium Hardness have been added. Using a smart device as the brains of the eXact iDip® Photometer System™ allows for limitless upgrade possibilities. The most recent upgrade of the eXact iDip® application will provide users with the ability to determine Langelier Saturation Index and Magnesium Hardness without doing any written calculations. The device will seamlessly

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 29-30_SPN_Feb_16_Prod_News_Rev.indd 29

interpret data collected by the user, calculate the desired values, and display the values both on the device and in the application. Prior to this technology those using LSI as an indicator for water safety had to conduct each test and manually perform a series of calculations in order to determine their LSI value. Now the eXact iDip® is capable of cutting out this work for the user. Since the eXact iDip® photometer communicates wirelessly with the application any updates to the software are automatically applied without any need to upgrade the existing hardware. Elecro’s Thermecro Solar Set To Heat Up Efficiency Options The solar heater market for swimming pools and spas offers a diverse range of products, all promising to deliver an eco-friendly solution to heat your pool water efficiently. Elecro’s Thermecro Solar Heater uses uniquely adapted evacuated tube technology rendering it the most efficient solar collector available. Thermecro tubes will collect solar radiation and convert into hot water no matter what the ambient air temperature. Beneficially, the solar rack is not reliant on outside temperatures or direct sunlight so, unlike other solar heaters on the market, it will work optimally in all weather conditions, temperatures and locations. The evacuated tubes act similarly to a flask and therefore the heat collected is not lost or wasted and instead this heat energy is delivered directly to your pool or spa. The most common type of solar heater on the market

for pools are capillary matting and pods, which are notoriously unreliable, especially when ambient air temperatures are lower than the water temperature. The Thermecro solar heater converts a staggering 92% of solar radiation that strikes the tubing into hot water; some of the other key benefits are: • A significant reduction in your energy consumption • The most efficient solar harvesting device on the market • Achieves significantly higher temperatures than any other solar collector • Works by collecting solar radiation, not just direct sunlight • Eco-friendly and reduces your carbon footprint • Stores hot water with virtually zero heat loss • Available in 16, 32 and 48 tube racks, the Thermecro Solar Heater is easily installed into any existing set-up. Simultaneous Readings With New Lovibond® Pooltester The new Lovibond® Pooltester has been enhanced to allow simultaneous readings of the most popular water treatment agents and the pH value. Today, pool owners can choose from a range of modern water treatment agents that are often used in combination. Many of these water treatment chemicals, however, are only effective within a limited pH range. Ambient environmental changes may also affect the readings. It is therefore now even more important to monitor the pH value of pool water in addition to checking the concentration of the water treatment chemicals. With the Lovibond® tester, domestic users can be assured of professional quality. The Tintometer Limited 01980 664800 www.lovibond.com

Scrubbing The Easy Way – Life Magic Foam For Pool And Spa Surfaces While the word ‘scrubbing’ may conjure images of backbreaking drudgery, the Life Magic Foam scrubbing sponge is all about making spa and pool cleanliness as effortless as possible. Its fine pore structure is designed to remove dirt and stains from surfaces easily, without the need for additional cleaning agents – using a simple, gentle wiping action. As well as lifting loose grime and debris, it helps remove build-ups of scale, mould and scum around spas, pools, outdoor furniture and pool covers. Using Life Magic Foam couldn’t be easier, according to Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. He explains: “You simply cut it into a suitably-sized piece with a knife and soak it in water. After you squeeze out the excess, you just rub it over the surface you need to clean and wipe dry. And it’s highly reusable. Just use it again and again until it disappears. “Products like this – and there are dozens in our Essentials range of pool and spa accessories – add real value for your customers and your business. After all, when someone buys a hot tub, they’re investing in their personal enjoyment – not looking for just another thing to clean. “Because it makes cleaning so effortless, it can be a game-changer for existing owners – allowing them to really enjoy their hot tubs now and in the years ahead.” Life Magic Foam is one of the latest additions to Golden Coast’s Essentials catalogue. New Water Service Highlights Leisure Sector Savings Opportunities ‘UK leisure businesses are missing opportunities to reduce water consumption and costs’ and according to Jon Wadley, Minimise Water’s newly appointed Water Management Director, this is the result of the typically short term and narrow approach that many organisations have applied to water procurement, use and waste. To help the leisure sector manage their water resources more efficiently by developing bespoke systems that drive down the cost of operation, Minimise Water has launched a new Integrated Water Management service. This new approach provides businesses with a full, unbiased water management service from a single source. The service

incorporates a full water audit, prioritised recommendations, regulation, planning and legislation support, installation, monitoring and validation. Assistance with funding and tax incentive schemes can also be provided. The service is deliberately broad and will include, but is not limited to: compliance, alternative water sources, recycling and reuse, heat and energy capture and waste minimisation. “Most businesses focus on a single aspect of water management, such as compliance and treatment. They tick the essential, regulatory boxes and then turn their attention to other aspects of plant management. “Combined with an absence of

industry innovation and a laissez faire approach from government, this has meant that water has been something of a forgotten utility. Especially in terms of efficiencies. But that’s about to change,” said Jon. While water scarcity has long been flagged as an impending environmental problem for the UK, especially in the south east, it has not gained the same traction as, for example, climate change or energy shortages. The result is that few businesses have prioritised infrastructure upgrades, with many still employing outdated and inefficient water management systems. “This negatively impacts operational costs and is depleting UK water reserves at a faster rate than is necessary,” said Jon. “The rising cost of commercial water, however, is likely to drive change, making water efficiency solutions more attractive. With commercial water supply costs projected to increase by 30% over the next decade, many more businesses are recognising the financial benefits associated with improved water performance.” For many, though, it’s difficult to know where to start. Recognising this, Minimise Water has brought consultancy, delivery and validation under one roof, taking responsibility for every aspect of a business’ water

actions and processes. “Our integrated service will make it easier for businesses to both kick start and fully deliver the water efficiency process,” said Jon, adding: “Our holistic approach to water use often unearths savings in areas that clients had not previously considered, many with extremely attractive payback periods.” Business benefits include reduced direct costs and associated energy savings, minimised consumption, improved sustainability, carbon savings, contribution towards CSR and water compliance objectives plus the delivery of BREAM requirements for new builds. UK Pool & Spa Expo Rebrands For 2016 The UK Pool & Spa Expo team are excited to announce the re-branding of the show to the Hot Tub Living Expo in 2016 with the newly named event taking place 24-25 October 2016 at Birmingham’s NEC. After four editions of the UK Pool & Spa Expo, and many discussions with the industry, they have decided to re-launch the show with the new name and focus on sectors which they feel are showing most growth and innovation. It has been clear over the last three years that the spa and hot tub companies are accounting for a larger percentage of the show floor, and whilst visitors may come for the hot tubs, they stay for the ancillary

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 35-36_SPN_Feb_16_Hot_Tub_News.indd 35

products, saunas, steam and indeed pool companies, making up the ‘living’ sector of the show. These companies have been present but not prevalent at previous shows but in 2016 they will endeavour to have an exhibitor list to fulfil every desire of the hot tub owner or prospective purchaser. The show will remain open to all at no charge for entry and there will still be a consumer element involved. The exhibitors have said to the event organisers that the

dealers, distributors and retailers of their products are key visitors which is why the Hot Tub Living Expo will be not only an exhibition for these people but also a two day explosion of live demos, specialist training, new product displays and bountiful hospitality! The New Events Ltd team will continue to strive to listen to their customers and create an offering in their best interests and are keen to evolve the market, to be reactive and to use the event as a vehicle to drive forward the needs of the industry. In the case of the Silver-White Edition, the classy impression of the fine Silver colour becomes even more powerful by when combined with White. The current Silver-White mix is just right for those who like a puristic style with the wow effect. The Silver-White Edition hot tubs have a White outer panelling combined with a Silver inner shell and JetPaks™ in the colour Snow. JetPaks are the back parts of the seats equipped with massage jets, which can be selected and combined as required. There is a choice of 16 different JetPaks™, all of which can be combined with each other and easily exchanged via a simple click system. They are split into the categories of Sport, Wellness and Relax Flow Therapy. The Silver-White Edition comprises outdoor hot tubs in various sizes, which can be equipped with three, four, five or even six JetPaks™. There is a choice of seven variants and these high-quality hot tubs that belong to Villeroy & Boch’s premium line consist of a robust, fully enclosed

wood-free construction with full foaming and insulation cover. This construction, stable plastic supports and the high-quality, UV-resistant acrylic surface of the shell make the hot tubs particularly durable and also ensure a noticeable reduction in noise and vibration. In addition, they excel with regard to energy efficiency. Unlike other manufacturers, Villeroy & Boch has completely dispensed with the piping behind the JetPaks™. As 90% of the water carrying parts lie in the

warm water inside the hot tub, the heat from the water in the lines is transmitted to the hot tub water and not simply emitted unused into the cold surroundings. Therefore, electricity and heating costs remain surprisingly low. An attractive cascade, premium neck cushions, an illuminated drinks holder and an optional sound system ensure a special hot tub experience. In addition, there is an easily understandable colour display and menu control plus a control system via app is also available. Villeroy & Boch +49 (0) 6864 810 www.villeroy-boch.com

Happy New Year!

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of key events planned for the first months of the year

2

016 should be a memorable year for the wet leisure industry with the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Rio likely to bring water sports into sharp focus as our swimmers, divers and other athletes go for glory in Brazil. SPATEX will be hosting the industry’s own medal ceremony, as the BISHTA and SPATA winners are announced at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards Gala Evening on Sunday 31 January 2016. Winners from these awards are eligible to be entered into the 2016 European Pool and Spa Awards judged in the autumn and then announced at Forum Piscine in Bologna, Italy in February 2017. This year, the Harper Brothers will be providing the entertainment at the Gala Evening and other surprises are planned to make it another memorable occasion. Everyone (whether or not they are BISHTA / SPATA members) is very welcome to attend this industry event and we look forward to the ISPE re-presenting their awards on stage. If you would like to book your ticket, the dress code is black tie optional. Please contact the office to confirm your booking and tickets are priced at just £69.95 + VAT per person. Once again I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. In terms of SPATEX 2016, the 20th anniversary show at the Ricoh Arena is a sell out! It promises to provide an exciting mixture of products and services from exhibitors and entertainment for the exhibitors and visitors, not only on Sunday, but also an anniversary party on the Monday evening. There will be over 100 exhibitors at the Show and with the excellent ISPE workshops and a second seminar area offering other relevant topics, education continues to be at the forefront of what SPATEX can offer attendees. My thanks to Ross Alcock at the ISPE, other

show partners and also to Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and the other SPATEX Directors for their hard work in getting the 20th anniversary event ready. The month of February not only gives us SPATEX, but is also special, as all over Europe, the first of the standards for domestic swimming pools comes into force. The standard is EN 16582 and there is an article on page 42 provided by Patrick Thorpe. Patrick will also be giving a brief update on another series of domestic pool standards, EN 16713 and a brief update on the draft standard EN 16927 on ‘Mini Pools’. He will also mention the work of TC 402 WG4 on domestic spas and hot tubs. SPATA is currently finalising some Seminars for 2016, so please watch out for the weekly e-newsletter for details of when and where they are being held. The revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication has been further delayed, but a meeting is planned for Thursday 18 February to discuss the revised content and timeline for publication. A greater emphasis on risk assessments is expected to be incorporated and attendees at SPATEX will have an opportunity to hear from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) about this topic. Following the third amendment to BS 7671 (17th edition of the Wiring Regulations) there is now a requirement for consumer units and switch gear in habitable buildings to be made from non-flammable materials. There is an understanding that swimming pool plant room control panels are likely to be required to be made from non-flammable materials for safety reasons. A Fire Risk Assessment may be suitable if a flammable material is going to be considered for the control panel and the pool plant room is in a garden out building well away from any habitable building. Any deviation from using a non-flammable control panel should be discussed with a qualified electrician and the client, with responses received in writing.

This month also sees Alex Kemsley becoming the new BSPF President, taking over from Richard Carrington, who will be performing his last duties as President at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. Alex Kemsley will shortly be confirming that he will be hosting his President’s Weekend at the world famous Brooklands circuit in Surrey in September. More details will be available at SPATEX and provisional bookings can be made for his Weekend at the BSPF stand, or by calling the BSPF office after the Show. A number of the BSPF (and SPATA) Past Presidents attended Ben Studdy’s Past Presidents Meal, which was held at the famous Bear Hotel Next to Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Ben was supported by his wife Penny, with many Past Presidents and their guests. Ben reports that the meal was a great success, with attendees making the most of the fabulous surroundings provided by the Palace and the town itself. I hope that 2016 proves a great year for you and below you will find some of the key dates for the calendar in the first few months of this year. Working Together To Build Consumer Trust And Awareness If you’re in the business of Wet Leisure, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a task force working for the benefit of your industry!

P

IP (Pool and Spa Industry Promotions) is a committee of professionals with the shared purpose to ensure that there is adequate promotion of the wet leisure industry, both within the trade and also most importantly, to the wider consumer audience. PIP is Chaired by Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams who is supported by the current committee members: Ben Studdy (Certikin International), Mark Ramsden (CPC), Jeremy Chalke (Spruce Pools), Neil Dalziel (Aquaflex), Alex Kemsley (Waterstream) and Rob Coombs (Deep End Pools). PIP’s work is coordinated by PR & Marketing Manager Sallie Golding, with assistance from BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes.

SO WHAT DOES PIP WANT TO ACHIEVE? That every household has an awareness of the wide range of wet leisure products and services and their benefits, including safe usage information. There are a number of goals that PIP has set itself to achieve and they include: 1 Deciding on the balance between traditional and digital media opportunities 1a Building specific consumer press relationships Building on our press/media contacts list and refining them, with an aim to have more one-to-one press/media relationships, for those that influence end users. These may include target

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 41_SPN_Feb_16_PIP_Rev.indd 41

audiences e.g. working with older people, picking up on leisure interest such as cars, caravans, boating and yachting to promote our wet leisure products. 1b Working with members to build and develop press interest stories Gaining consumer press coverage through the British Pool & Hot Tub and EUSA award winners and using case studies that can be used to build trade profiles and encourage new members. These stories need to embrace messages that demonstrate the relevant purchasing decisions made by end users about using trusted companies. 1c Achieving increased and wider digital press coverage Harnessing digital opportunities to widen our PR reach – Developing our press/media contacts and press communication. 1d Online Presence Management = Growing our online profiles Raising the profiles of BISHTA and SPATA online, through continued development of our websites (including SEO) digital and social marketing with end users. 1e Amplifying our Trade profile through national and local events Creating our own activity to promote the trade profiles on a national level, with resources for members to run local level activity. Providing newsworthy stories nationally and locally and providing consumer interaction for driving web

Sallie Golding, PIP’s PR & Marketing Manager

traffic. There may also be opportunities to seek suitable mailing databases to share leads with members. 2 Encouraging new members Use the PR and Marketing function above to amplify the profile of the trade bodies to the industry, promoting the features and benefits of membership and maximising trade publicity wherever possible.

PIP’S STRATEGY The committee typically meet on a quarterly basis, as well as holding a focused strategy meeting in November/December each year to discuss plans for the year ahead. Meeting formats are initiated by quarterly reports compiled by Sallie Golding, who has the responsibility to see the committee’s actions through to fruition. Sallie commented: “We have taken some huge steps to move forward with our plans since I joined the BSPF, and in return we have been rewarded with significant results. The committee provides a wealth of experience, their reactions and suggestions help to create ideas that in turn assist me to test validity of any planned initiatives. This makes PIP the perfect sounding board to help the industry.” As a committee, PIP works to give the industry greater visibility. If you would like to share your feedback, suggestions and ideas to help PIP achieve its strategic goals, or if you would like to know how you can put actions into place to support the goals of PIP and drive consumer awareness, please email sallie@bspf.org.uk or call her on 01264 356210/1.

The New European Standards For Domestic Swimming Pools Are Here! Having spent the last 5 years working on behalf of SPATA and BSI with other colleagues across Europe on the development of the new European standards for domestic swimming pools, Patrick Thorpe has a unique perspective on the new standards and in this issue, he offers his insight and thoughts on them

R

alph Riley’s article in the last issue of SPN gave an overview of the importance of European standards as they affect the swimming pool industry. This article will focus on the new domestic swimming pool standards (EN 16582) which are in three parts. Having attended the vast majority of the meetings in Europe to develop these standards, I know how much work has been undertaken to produce them. To avoid infringing any BSI copyright, this article will give a summary of some of the items to be aware of within the documents, but to find out more please purchase your own copy of the relevant standard(s). As with any European standards, they are applied through the British Standards Institution (BSI) and are not law in the UK. So, when reading the text of a European standard, to be able to follow it correctly, the word ‘Shall’ means ‘must’ (be done) to comply with the standard and ‘should’ means ‘recommended’ (to be done) to comply with the standard. However, it is good practice to follow the standards and they will be adopted within SPATA’s Standards (which cover a greater range of topics and hence advice). Be aware that the European standards will almost certainly be used in a legal dispute; so following them (or having at least as good an alternative solution) will help you to avoid many problems. Please be aware that the advice contained within these British / European standards and / or compliance with a British Standard cannot confer immunity from your legal obligations. The EN 16582 standards were published by BSI on 31 August 2015 and February

42 February 2016 SPN 42-43_SPN_Feb_16_BSPF_Euro_Standards.indd 42

2016 is the deadline across Europe for all other national standards (BSI) to be withdrawn in favour of these new standards. The three parts are summarised below:

PART 1: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING SAFETY AND TEST METHODS Electrical Requirements The first part of the European standard provides an overview for domestic swimming pools. The first point worth mentioning is that it references a European harmonised document HD 60364-7-702 that is fully incorporated into the British equivalent BS 7671 (more usually referred to as the 17th edition of the Wiring Regulations).

Water Losses The second point to mention is water leakage (or water losses), measured over a seven day period (not including evaporation, etc.). The table opposite shows (water) tightness classes ranging from W0 to W3. W0 refers to no losses being measured in a seven day period, while W1 is 1mm per day (or 7mm per week). This is also expressed as 1 litre/ m2 per day). W2 is 2mm per day (or 14mm per week). This figure is slightly more than the absolute limit previously set by SPATA Standards of 12mm per week, after all efforts have been made to eradicate any leaks, (although the expectation is that pools built by SPATA members do not leak). While the European standard provides a class ‘W3’, as this is the equivalent of 21mm per week, it is not going to be acceptable in the UK, as National Water Regulations take precedence over a European standard. In the UK, water losses are not permitted from swimming pools under this Regulation.

Companies who build, or install, pools will need to state in their Point of Sale information, the tightness class that they will provide to their customer. The European standard also states that pool pipework shall be W0 (i.e. have no leaks).

Permissible Openings The European standards tend to have a heavy focus on safety and entrapment is covered in a lot of detail with these documents. To ensure that the standards are also practical to apply, the first 500mm of water depth have been excluded from entrapment issues, as there is considered less risk of drowning in this depth of water. Also excluded, are any penetrations into the pool shell or ground that are 10mm (or less) in depth, as this too is unlikely to cause a serious hazard to the bather. The risk of finger and toe entrapment is deemed to be unlikely when it is 8mm (or less) or 25mm and above. The 25mm figure is slightly different to that covered by entrapment in the commercial pool standards (EN 13451) so please be aware that there is a difference. For head and neck entrapment, the safe figures are said to be 110mm (or less) or 230mm and greater. For other body entrapment, the permissible openings are in the range of 25mm to 110mm and when used for construction reasons, installers are to alert their customers of a potential risk of entrapment.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY The building tolerances that are permissible within these standards are laid out for the different pool dimensions. There is also advice on the level of the top edge of the overflow which shall allow water to flow continuously across the whole length of the overflow channel.

PART 3: SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING SAFETY AND TEST METHODS FOR ABOVE-GROUND POOLS

Accessibility

Safety Signage

Access to a pool (whether in-ground or above-ground needs to be safe (especially when the pool is not in use). Any pool with a wall height of 850mm (or greater) shall be installed with a means of access, as this is the height where it is assumed that bathers (especially children and older people) will benefit from this type of assistance. SPATA has for many years been recommending double top treads on ladders for domestic pools (as it is already mentioned in the commercial pool standards EN 13451). This double top tread reduces the gap between the back of the top step and the wall and so it is less likely that someone will have an entrapment accident on this top step. Submerged stairs in pools are not necessarily within the scope of Building Regulations and so the advice in the European standard allows for variations on the step from the pool surround to the first tread, compared to any of the other steps into the pool and there can also be differences for the dimensions between the last step and the pool floor.

All pools shall be provided with EU authorised safety signs for ‘supervising children in the aquatic environment’ and for ‘no diving’ (if the water depth and pool profile do not permit this activity). The signs are to be fixed within 2 metres of the pool in a prominent position. In terms of the Annexes (or Appendices) to these standards, Annex B has very helpful details on safety information for the consumer. As it is an ‘informative’ annex, it is for information, rather than a ‘normative’ annex, which would have to be followed, if the standard is to be complied with.

Drowning In order to prevent children (especially those aged five years and under) from drowning, these European standards recommend that safety devices be provided. It will always be up to the customer to determine whether they wish to have a safety device at all, but they should make an informed choice after discussing it with their pool builder / installer. Examples of devices included in the standard are physical barriers such as a pool fence, a safety cover, and an enclosure. Please note that securing the boundary of the property (with a wall or fence) may also add a layer of protection to reduce the likelihood of neighbours entering the pool that are not authorised to do so.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 42-43_SPN_Feb_16_BSPF_Euro_Standards.indd 43

PART 2: SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING SAFETY AND TEST METHODS FOR IN-GROUND POOLS Pools covered in this standard must have a minimum water depth of 400mm (so the very small paddling pools would generally be covered by a different European standard for toys – EN 71). A number of pages deal with mechanical resistance performance requirements relating to ground and hydrostatic pressure. There is an important definition regarding ‘Lifespan’ and it is assumed that a pool built / installed will last for a minimum period of ten years (although this is not the same as the guarantee that should be provided to the customer, which may list different items at different timescales, e.g. for finishes, equipment, etc.). The standard also defines the ‘Datum’ and provides tolerances for ensuring the pool is built / installed in the correct location. The ‘watertightness’ described in part 1 above, is further commented on in this part 2, as it may be provided by the structure itself, or by an element independent of the structure (such as a liner).

As these above-ground pools are usually manufactured and erected, rather than constructed on site, much of the detail in the standard relates to the manufacturer providing factory tests for vertical and horizontal deformation of their product. What is important to bear in mind with above-ground pools is that if a retailer installs them partially (or wholly) in the ground, the requirements of the standard become the same as for any other type of in-ground pool (as mentioned in part 2 above). The main issue would be fulfilling the requirements for a lifespan of ten years in the ground. So, please be sure that you have confirmation, in writing from the manufacturer, that their product can be installed partially or wholly in-ground, before you decide to do this for a customer. If you install the product partially or wholly in-ground, the liability will be with you, if the manufacturer does not recommend it and a problem arises.

OTHER STANDARDS There are more domestic swimming pool standards to follow in 2016, with BS EN 16713 due to be made available next. These standards are also in three parts, relating to water circulation, filtration and treatment. Also on the horizon for domestic swimming pools are ‘mini pools’ as part of EN 16927. As many children could be at risk from drowning in these pools, the experts across Europe have chosen to produce a standard for these pool types. ‘Mini pools are large splasher pools with a water depth greater than 400mm, so not covered by the toy standard (EN 71). Where these pools are without filtration, they are not covered by EN 16582. Finally, at some point in the next couple of years, there should also be standards for domestic spas and hot tubs, which are currently being produced by Working Group 4 (WG4) of Technical Committee 402 (TC 402). For SPATA members reading this article, please remember that you can get a 20% discount by buying your standards via SPATA. Patrick Thorpe is a member of SPATA’s Technical Committee and has been a British representative on behalf of SPATA and BSI. He is also Company Secretary to SPATA, BISHTA, PIP and the BSPF. Having retired from Certikin International, he has most recently been working for AstralPool UK.

STA POOL PLANT – LEGIONELLA

The Impact Of Legionella Infections

This issue, Robbie Phillips and Richard Lamburn, STA’s Technical Pool Plant Team look at Legionella and the infection risk it poses to wet leisure environments

T

he recognition of certain strains of Legionella in water-based systems has long been established. Serious multiple infections of persons near these systems is also well documented. It is essential that the plant operator recognises that when water is sprayed or when an aerosol spray is created, the risk of Legionella infection begins. According to the following information, then the risks can escalate into a life threatening and ultimately fatal situation.

PRE-CURSORS TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HIGH RISK SITUATIONS There are accepted critical factors: • Water as a transmission agent bacterium can move around systems and attach to surfaces particularly biofilms where masses of bacteria can develop including Legionella. • Nutrients in the form of body fats, oils, organic contamination etc. • Heat, Legionella has mutated to a preferred temperature range. Therefore we can deduct that heating of a water-based environment, the bacteria multiply where temperatures are between 20-45°C and nutrients are available. The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C.

POTENTIAL LEISURE SITES If we consider the above factors and look at the general provisions within wet leisure the following are potential Legionella risks: • Showers – shower heads, supply lines etc. • Spa baths – circulation systems, air

Biofilm growth dehumidifier

blowers, booster pumps. • Interactive play features – circulation systems, air blowers, feature pumps. • Leisure centre features where spray features are present. •

OPERATOR GUIDANCE • Complete a Legionella risk assessment of the facility and apply appropriate risk controls, completed by competent persons. Be aware it is known that industrial Legionella contractors were not aware of spa bath risks for example. • Follow the UK Health and Safety Executives ACoP L8 – Approved Code of Practice and Guidance document titled ‘Legionnaires’ disease: The control of Legionella bacteria in water systems’. This sets out guidance for the Legionella risk assessment and Legionella control procedures. • A suitable and sufficient assessment is required to identify and assess the risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria from work activities and water systems on the premises and any necessary precautionary measures. • A safe operation begins with the design of a facility. Designers and installers should be aware of potential Legionella risk and also should have specific detail of operation recommendations to reduce or eliminate risk. • Since the Legionella bacterium are neutralised with halogens e.g. chlorine etc, the application and control at all times, of disinfectant and pH, is critical and it is recommended that automatic chemical dosing systems are installed in these

A poorly maintained balance tank

circumstances. Careful selection of manual testing and frequency is recommended. All testing should be meticulously recorded with reaction log, and, ideally a ‘Traffic Light System’. Facility surrounds, balance tanks, overflow systems and filtration systems should all be maintained to recommendations to prevent bacterial contamination. Pre-bathing showering is essential in reducing contamination and therefore nutrients entering the facility. Apply microbiological testing and act immediately on results outside parameters. Monthly for general accepted bacteria. Quarterly for Legionella species and L. pneumophillia. Ensure water cannot stagnate anywhere in the system by keeping pipe lengths as short as possible or removing redundant pipe work. Poor flows in filters can provide an excellent breeding ground for biofilms and promote the presence of Legionella bacterium. Good design and frequent inspections of the bed are required. Be aware of biofilm growth and eradicate; this growth protects and promotes Legionella bacterium.

It is essential we understand the basics of Legionella contamination, sources and risks. This bacterium has killed many people including clients, staff and sub-contractors. It can also cause serious complications before death. On a business this can also have a massive impact financially, in terms of litigation and fines, loss of business and its reputation and the costs involved in fixing the plant problems. For further advice on Legionella contact the STA or see them at on the afternoon of Monday 1 February at SPATEX 2016 where they will be holding a free seminar covering this important subject. Further information on Legionella can also be found on the HSE website. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

OPINION

I See SPATEX Is Now A ‘Wellness’ Show – That Could Be A Sign Of A Healthy Industry “SPATEX is celebrating its 20th anniversary and has taken the opportunity to become ‘The pool, spa and wellness show’ – but has it taken us 2,000 years to turn full circle?” asks Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams

T

he two main themes of this year’s SPATEX seem to be energy saving and wellness, and I think that’s good. It’s good because they appear to be the main themes running through other industries and how consumers are spending their money as well. Perhaps it’s true for all types of business, but it sometimes feels as if we get a bit introspective. That we become fascinated by the latest pump, the most recent innovation in filter technology and, in doing so, lose sight of what we are actually selling to people. Perhaps we are getting that focus back.

Victorian swimming pools were fabulously tiled and decorated and – aside from not being sunk into a basement – could pass muster as a top-end installation of today. Salt water bathing, natural swimming; it was all the rage because it was good for you. The Victorians wanted a healthy mind in a healthy body and they were more than happy to push the boundaries of science and engineering to get it and their influence extended past the turn of that century.

AND THEN THERE WERE THE SIXTIES

If you asked someone who worked in the wet leisure industry 2,000 years ago what it was that they did, they would probably say that they provided health and wellbeing for their customers. You might find that you were talking to someone who built or maintained a Roman bathhouse or a Turkish steam room. It might be someone who was building a sauna in Finland. But they would have a clear idea of what service they were providing to their community. Of course, all those places had an element of socialising and relaxation to them, but their popularity stemmed from making customers feel healthy. Keeping them feeling ‘well’. To be fair, once the basic principles had been established, there wasn’t a lot of innovation going on back then. Light the fire, heat the rock then heat the water was pretty much the name of the game until the middle of the 19th century. Then along came the Victorians, and if there was one thing they liked a lot, it was innovation.

After the turmoil of the forties and fifties, the world suddenly looked like a very different place and people wanted different things. The idea of ‘health’ was perhaps a bit too worthy. What people were looking for was ‘fun’ and, along with the arrival of that big, influential chunk of the population known as the baby boomers, came a bunch of attitudes and innovations that were influential on the course of our industry. The swimming pool raised its head as the ‘must have’ Hollywood movie star accessory; bikini clad starlets needed something to sit by. Also in California, people started filling old wine vats with hot water and calling them ‘hot tubs’ and the first electric sauna stoves became available and a Finish peculiarity began to become a global trend. Pools, hot tubs and saunas were becoming big business, but as a ‘lifestyle’ item. It was more about hedonism than health; much more to do with looking good than feeling good. But interestingly, the sixties also saw the first use of the word ‘wellness’. At first it seemed a strange term; almost a joke. But no one is laughing at it now.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT DOES, BUT I WANT ONE

THE POOL, SPA AND WELLNESS SHOW

Health cures and hydrotherapy took off with the Victorians and in a surprisingly similar way to today. Fantastically complicated structures of valves and plumbing turned Victorian bathrooms into health spas, just as we are seeing more and more sauna and steam installations take pride of place in the en suite.

It’s perhaps taken the best part of fifty years, but it seems that the wet leisure industry is focussed on health and wellbeing once again and SPATEX’s new description of itself is just the most recent visible sign of that. Last year the global wellness industry was worth $3.4 trillion, or about three and a half times more than the worldwide

WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE FOR US?

48 February 2016 SPN 48_SPN_Feb_16_Opinion_Rev.indd 48

pharmaceutical market. I think that seeing ourselves as part of that industry makes perfect sense and, after all, it is our traditional market if you look back over our history. Of course, it might make a difference to how we go about doing some things. How we sell ourselves and market our industry, perhaps? It might influence what sort of new products that we go looking for and what other industries we look to for innovations and new trends. This year’s Wet Leisure Survey had a specific question asking people to what extent their customers came to them for health and wellbeing and it will be interesting to see what the results have to say on that score. But I’m comfortable with ‘wellness’. It feels good and I think it can be something that gives consumers a clear reason to come and buy the products and services that our industry has to offer. I know that the world changes at an increasingly fast pace, but it seems unlikely that being healthy will go out of fashion for some time to come.

AND IN ANOTHER 20 YEARS’ TIME...? It seems astonishing to think that SPATEX is celebrating its 20th anniversary, but I suppose that Golden Coast is almost 40 years old. We have all seen an incredible amount of change and I know that we will see a great deal more. What sort of future that change will bring, I really don’t know. Innovations in technology and engineering will, I’m sure, surprise and, hopefully, delight us but I also think that it’s quite reassuring to know that the ultimate benefit that we all provide our customers, the opportunity to feel healthier, more relaxed and more connected to family and friends is something that people have wanted to invest their time and money in for over 2,000 years. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).

EXPERT ADVICE: H&V

Who Can You Turn To When Things Go Wrong? Heating and ventilation in wet leisure environments is well known as a complex area, and the solutions are not always obvious. But help is at hand… Certikin has a leading expert team of specialist engineers who are able to provide advice, trouble shoot and work on your behalf. They include Graham Kneale, Certikin’s H&V Field Sales Manager

W

hen experienced pool builders install a new swimming pool, generally the project goes without hitch. In no time at all, the customer is relaxing in his beautifully heated pool, the installer is paid and everyone is happy. Then, just occasionally, there are those other jobs… you can probably recognise the ones… the customer was delighted with the quote, you have done everything you were supposed to and even gone above and beyond the contract to accommodate their requirements on site. Then there is a problem! Condensation on the walls, mildew in the corners, corrosion on the metal work, the air or water won’t reach temperature, or what looks like serious damage to the roof structure. You know the score, you have done nothing wrong but immediately the end user, the main contractor, the architect and a host of consultants are all blaming you. After all, you supplied the dehumidifier, you installed it and you were last in… of course it’s your fault, everyone says so! This is exactly the situation Keith Vickers at Azure Swimming Pools found himself in when not just one, but two separate customers were blaming him for problems that he knew were not his fault. But how could he prove it? Who listens to a humble pool builder when the architects and engineers all say it’s the pool builder’s fault and are then owed £40,000 in outstanding payments. This is where the expertise at Certikin really comes into its own. Certikin not only understands all the technical issues, but also have the in-house expertise needed to stand up to other so called ‘experts’ who invariably have their own agendas and reputations to defend. Far from being neutral observers they often have a poor grasp of the particular intricacies of swimming pools and when things go wrong, they lack the knowledge to identify the root causes of the problem. Graham Kneale, Certikin’s H&V Field Sales Manager is adept at problem solving. Trained

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 51_SPN_Feb_2016_Certikin_H&V_Rev.indd 51

initially as a marine engineer, Graham’s technical background is second to none. He has worked for the Atomic Energy Authority at the cutting edge of research. Later as a sales consultant, Graham was designing swimming pool, heating and ventilation systems as far back as the 1980s. “Back then, I was involved in one or two swimming pools a year. Now I am involved in three or four a day. It’s a whole different level of expertise,” explained Graham. Whilst working as senior consulting engineer, Graham also lectured in heating and ventilation in the department of construction at Oxford Brookes University. This included teaching architects and engineers the details of calculating U values and energy losses in buildings. As a Fellow of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, Graham has more than enough letters after his name to hold his own against any consultant. Certikin know that pool builders cannot be an expert in every aspect of heating and ventilation, which is why their H&V team is dedicated to providing first class customer support. The division has more than enough clout to provide assistance at every stage of a project – whether selecting the most suitable dehumidifiers at the quotation stage, finding the right configuration when in design or as back-up when the job is at handover stage. Keith Vickers at Azure Pools said: “Knowing that you have Graham on your side is very reassuring. He is someone who will fight your corner and win! It can make the difference between a good year and a great year financially. The retentions that are unreasonably held by customers can really hurt and it pays to have Certikin on your side to help win them back.”

H&V Products For The New Season Enter The New Generation Vaporex 34 and 56… The science of humidity control will shortly move into a new realm with the launch of Calorex’s new look, feature enhanced Vaporex dehumidifier. Superefficient, the new Vaporex 34 and 56 have a contemporary new look and feature an optional eye-catching new cover (in white with further colours available soon); PCB with fault finding lights; 12v remote interface for humidistat as standard and an enlarged condensate drain connection.

and Delta range… With new touch screen technology and a remote internet connection, Calorex’s upgraded Delta range allows you to control your pool room directly from your smartphone. All the models now come with a 7” touch screen display providing a more flexible approach to system management. The unit can be controlled and adjusted on site to match fan speeds precisely to ductwork resistance and automatically vary exhaust speeds to match building load requirements.

A COMPLETE POOL WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FIRST FROM JAK JAK Water look forward to meeting existing and new potential clients at SPATEX where they will be exhibiting one of the most technologically advanced automatic control systems for the first time in this country – the Wallace and Tiernan DEPOLOX® Pool E700 P system. Designed for measurement and control functions as well as process control in pool water treatment applications, the system is based on individual pool water treatment requirements and the instrument can be configured to measure and monitor all pertinent parameters. The DEPOLOX Pool E 700 P incorporates many of the existing differentiated pool water treatment features such as DIN contact, shock chlorination menu, economic mode operation as well as the CEDOX control algorithm. The controller supports all chemical feed applications commonly found in pool water treatment such as dosing pumps or relay control feeders, chlorine gas feed control, on site electrochlorination system operation as well as a control signal to UV systems, flocculation and/or activated carbon slurry feed systems. The unit can measure and control the critical disinfection parameters of free chlorine, pH and ORP. The instrument can also measure combined and total chlorine as well as conductivity and provides a control output for these measurements. See them on stand C5

SPATEX, RICOH ARENA, COVENTRY, UK CERTIKIN AIM TO STAND OUT AT SPATEX 2016 Certikin is pulling out all the stops for the special anniversary edition of SPATEX with a spectacular stand bursting with new products and innovations. Here’s a taste of what you can expect to see on the Certikin stand (D10): • An electronic version of the Roldeck EasyCover to sit alongside the existing and highly popular solar powered model. It is particularly suited to small buildings, such as log cabins as the end stands are slim and discreet. • The Walu Deck is a timber decking system which extends over and retracts from the pool, acting as a safety cover and a usable deck area; the Walu Air, a winter debris cover and a safety cover, creates an inflated pillow which ‘plugs’ the shape of the pool, ensuring that debris cannot get under the cover into the pool. • Stainless steel transformation plates change standard Certikin plastic fittings into luxurious polished stainless steel. While over on the CertiDos stand (D14): • The focus will be on the connectivity between its systems and iPads, smartphones etc which is nothing short of life changing for pool operators! • The new Exact Pool EZ Photometer test kit. Finally on the Calorex stand (C14): • On display, a Delta, Vaporex, Variheat, Propac and AA300 showing all the latest updates. See them on stands D10, D14 and C14

NEW LUTZ-JESCO EASYPRO POOL CONTROLLER TO BE LAUNCHED AT SHOW Visitors to the Lutz-Jesco stand will be able to see the new EASYPRO water sampling station which enables standard-conform and continual measurement of the process water in public swimming pools, industrial plant and hot water installations up to 65°C. The exact dosing of the disinfectant requires the constant measurement of the process water and the exact control of the dosing system. The modular design of the water sampling station enables its exact adaptation to suit your clients’ needs. A flow controller generates a constant flow of 30 l/h and leads the sample water to the measuring cell in the shortest possible time, thereby guaranteeing high measurement accuracy. The measured values are then led directly

The values can be read off at any time via a display and the LED illumination of the individual measuring cells indicates immediately whether a measured value lies outside a nominal range, thereby requiring manual control. The water sampling station is made of durable materials and fitted with highvalue measuring cells. The PVC fittings are resistant against aggressive chemicals and highly resistant against abrasion. Depending on the version, measuring cells are used for measuring the degree of disinfection, the pH value, the Redox potential, the total amount of chlorine and the conductivity. 2016 Hot Tubs – The New Season

Aquavia Spa’s Sunset comes with screwless cabinet with an exclusive design and three different colour finishes

Hot tubs are without a doubt a real success story in the UK and for many manufacturers and retailers, 2015 was another great year with sales increasing and the sector going from strength-to-strength. With demand across both commercial and domestic markets showing no signs of slowing, manufacturers and distributors are keen to ensure the New Year brings new opportunities. This issue, we take a look at what’s in store in 2016 By Jon Wadeson

W

hilst nobody knows the actual numbers of hot tubs sold each year in the UK, manufacturers, distributors and retailers all agree that the market is going from strengthto-strength in the UK. With more opportunities though, comes more competition, so it’s increasingly important for retailers to be able to offer not only a comprehensive range of products to end users, but also something that differs from the competition – something that is unique. This in turn drives innovation, with what’s on offer constantly changing. From entry level to high-end, this issue we take a look at what’s new and improved in 2016.

PROJECT SHOWCASE

A Project That Will Bowl You Over!

eforea Spa at Hilton – the Ageas Bowl, Southampton

B

oasting stunning architecture, the new Hilton Hotel, which opened its doors in May 2015, is incorporated into The Ageas Bowl Cricket Stadium, home of Hampshire County Cricket. Within the hotel, the eforea spa provides guests with an opportunity to leave the stresses of the day behind and features – thanks to wet leisure experts Bos Leisure Bristol – a salt grotto, steam room, sauna, ice fountain, tiled spa and hydrotherapy pool, all of which create a world-class relaxation experience. When it came to the design and build of the spa only the best would do. Between the architect, Hilton Hotel’s interior designer and Bos Leisure Bristol, a sublime spa journey has been created. It starts with two steam rooms clad in beautiful marble tiles offering different sensory experiences in terms of temperature and aromatic essences. The experience shower then offers a range of mist, spray, cool water, hot water, colour changing led lighting and body jets. The bather has the opportunity then to relax at the foot spa where tiny air bubbles gently massage their submerged feet while they sit on a warm tiled seat. The ice fountain gives users the chance to envigorate their body by dipping into a large bowl of crushed ice that is then rubbed into the

skin. The supply of ice is unlimited and automatically replenishes itself. If guests just want to have some peace and quiet, the elegant Caldarium has four heated tiled beds all fitted within a smoked glass fronted temperature controlled room with essential oils blown into the atmosphere and soothing music which gently blocks out the outside world. The custom made sauna is absolutely stunning with a glass wall looking out over the hydrospa. The sauna has a hidden heater with aromatic essence injection and a state of the art fire suppressant system that Bos Leisure have incorporated for Hilton. If guests want to take in some fresh air, Bos Leisure have also installed an incredible 2.5m circular deck level spa on the decking outside the building with views over a golf course. Supplying the stunning bespoke tiled hydrospa at the centre of the project, Certikin’s Commercial division were involved with this prestigious project from the beginning. Alongside Bos Leisure, the Certikin team worked with the architects and interior designer on the original concept and saw it through to the design stage and ultimate construction. The beautiful hydropool (8m x 3.9m) features two water cannons, massage stations, air pad and four air loungers.

Certikin also supplied all the filtration, pumps, blowers and pipework. Alpine deep laminated filters are ideal for hydrotherapy pools because these deep bed filters are ideal to fit into existing plant rooms through a single door. Making life easier for the Hilton’s spa operator, Aquaspeed pumps have also been fitted in the pump room. The Aquaspeed has a clear lid for quick inspection of the pump basket and a hydraulically efficient impellor and diffuser design for maximum hydraulic output at the same time as minimising turbulence. Certikin’s Commercial air blowers are all manufactured in die-cast aluminium alloy and only have one moving part; a carefully balanced rotating impeller and the housing eliminates abrasion and wear. Manager of the Certikin Commercial division, Steve Nelson said: “The Hilton eforea Spa is a fantastic example of what can be achieved using Ceritkin’s market leading equipment and the team’s design expertise. The benefits of hydrotherapy pools are becoming increasingly appreciated in the commercial sector – it’s a well known fact that they are the single best relaxation resource that a health club can provide for its customers.” SPN

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS

Alternative Water Therapy Providing that all important clean and safe water experience is a must for any pool or spa owner. Traditional methods of water treatment are still popular, effective and proven, but with an ever increasing range of alternative water treatment products and systems on offer, is there such a thing as the best solution? Of course, opinions vary so this issue we examine what’s available for the new season By Karen Witney

T

herapy might seem like a strange word to use in water treatment but that is exactly what the pool or spa water receives when a treatment is applied. In the Encarta English Dictionary one of the descriptions for therapy is: ‘treating of something with agent’ and ‘an act of subjecting something to a physical, chemical or biological process or agent’. There are a number of very successful alternative treatments used all over the world that ensure the water is safe and bacteria free as well as keeping it crystal clear. The most popular alternatives to date are bromine, which is popular for use in hot tubs due to its workability in higher temperature and pH. Active oxygen is another widely used choice as is ozone and natural minerals such as copper and silver. Chlorine is of course still the most accepted method of treatment but with so many effective alternatives available, consumers now have a full range of choices to suit their own particular needs. We look at the innovative and increasingly wide ranging ‘therapies’ you can offer your customers to ensure all is well in their pools and hot tubs and at the same time treat your revenue to an extra dose of profit.

MAGNAPOOL – A REFRESHING AND NATURAL WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR ALL POOLS Magnesium is one of the essential minerals required for our bodies to function properly. It is found in seawater as well as the human body and all living tissues. In particular, we know that magnesium is beneficial for soothing pain, caring for the skin or easing muscular problems and the relaxing virtues of magnesium-enriched baths have been recognised for many years. MagnaPool™ is an exclusive magnesiumbased water treatment system for swimming pools that combines the natural properties of MagnaPool’s own unique mineral blend with an exceptionally fine filtration system. The system combines three unique components for a healthy, balanced and environmentally friendly, mineral-enriched swimming pool:

Zodiac Patented MagnaPool™ minerals – which dissolve in the pool water. Zodiac Crystal Clear – glass crystals filter medium, which provides ultra-fine filtration. Zodiac Hydroxinator – an exclusive water treatment unit that purifies water automatically by hydroxination. The self-contained system is easy to use and provides exceptionally clear water without adding any sanitising chemicals. The intense clarity is made possible by combining two innovative factors. Firstly, the powerful natural clarifying properties of magnesium in MagnaPool™ minerals. Secondly, exceptionally fine filtration using Crystal Clear glass media. When the swimming pool water is treated manually, the concentration of chlorine varies between each addition. This generates fluctuations that can adversely affect treatment effectiveness and bathing comfort. With MagnaPool™, the natural purifying properties generated by the Hydroxinator act gently and constantly, without the saw-tooth effect. The result is continuously disinfected and healthy water that is perfectly balanced. “MagnaPool™ was launched in Australia in early 2014 to wide acclaim from the pool trade with

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS pools and increasing issues of biofilm in spas to name a few examples.” In 2016 Lo-Chlor will be introducing a new range of Phosphate Free water treatments along with new spa products in order to deal with the issues mentioned. Paul added: “People use our technologies because they work and make the management of their water easier – that in itself is the strength of the Lo-Chlor brand.” Lo-Chlor is at the forefront of the control and removal of phosphate the major food nutrient for algal growth. Taking out phosphate creates less demand for both the sanitiser and the algaecide used in the pool water, enabling them to last longer which in turn will save the end user money and provide a better overall bathing experience. This was evident with the launch of Starver® X which is a proprietary blend of Starver® X and No More Scale are just two show how Lo-Chlor continues to rare earth compounds which evolve their product range to meet the ever changing needs of the market will neutralise and remove dissolved phosphates within 24 hours. over 3,000 kits sold in the first year. The positive feedback and results More Scale, continues our ethos of ensuring from in-house tests, gives Lighthouse Pools the confidence that it will soon become the number one choice for pool owners looking to replace manufactured chemicals with a natural, therapeutic bathing experience,” said Daniel Phillips of Lighthouse Pools.

WATER TREATMENT INNOVATION FROM LO-CHLOR Lo-Chlor Chemicals have specialised in bringing new innovative treatments to the global pool and spa markets for the last 25 years. Their technologies have enabled both service companies and end users alike to benefit with their product range, which continues to provide simple solutions for everyday problems. Paul Grunhut, Sales Director, said: “Being at the forefront of our industry with our product range in order to ensure that the pool or spa owner enjoys a clean and safe experience is part of our company ethos. There is an acceptance that traditional chemistries only do part of the required job, as over the past five years the starting point for pool and spa owners has changed dramatically due to changes in the source water used. These changes have seen higher levels of phosphate for

that phosphate is kept to a minimum for pool users,” said Paul.

HYDROCHLOR SALT CHLORINATOR FROM WATERCO Designed and manufactured in Australia, the Hydrochlor will automatically maintain the chlorine level of your pool and eliminate problems associated with periods of very high or low chlorine levels. Fewer fluctuations in chlorine levels mean fewer fluctuations in pH levels. This adds up to more stable, balanced water. Consistently maintained sanitiser levels in the pool water will prevent the growth of all common algae. A salt-water chlorinated pool requires much less attention than a chlorine pool. A salt water pool provides a more comfortable swimming environment. Salt water feels better and is less irritating to the body than standard chlorinated water. Waterco have been manufacturing salt chlorinators for 25 years and as a result of this experience the Hydrochlor comes with a number of features including built in pool monitor and pump protection, a large LCD display, super chlorination function, an energy saving winter mode and a high performance titanium electrolytic cell. The salt cell housing is pressure rated to 4 bar and the unit comes with a five year warranty.

HYDROXAN® FROM GAFFEY TECHNICAL SERVICES Protect water hygiene and reduce the energy demand of the pool with HydroXan®, a patented non-hazardous liquid TCDO compound producing a safe, controlled residual of chlorine dioxide in chlorinated pool water. Chlorine dioxide is well known for its efficiency as an oxidiser, being particularly effective in destroying biofilm, known to harbour pathogenic bacteria such as Legionella and Pseudomonas species. Chlorine dioxide is also effective in destroying Cryptosporidium, with HydroXan® being used successfully in the clean-up of several high profile outbreaks in the UK and Europe. HydroXan® is dosed into the pool flow continuously in very small quantities to produce a constant low-level chlorine dioxide residual throughout the pool, allowing a significant reduction in the consumption of chlorine whilst providing an additional boost

to disinfection throughout the whole pool. Irritant chlorine by-products and odour are also significantly reduced, improving the comfort and health of bathers and pool-side staff. The advantage of HydroXan® is that chlorine dioxide yield increases when organic pollution is introduced to pool water by bathers, unlike free chlorine which is depleted, providing a robust water treatment system. A compact HydroXan® dosing station can be installed and operated at a fraction of the cost and carbon footprint of UV systems, bringing advanced disinfection within the reach of any commercial pool or spa facility. HydroXan® is safe to handle and easy to dose using accurate equipment which requires no technical intervention by pool staff. A typical 25m community pool will require less than one litre of HydroXan® per day.

SUREX 002 OXYSURE™ NON CHLORINE ACTIVE OXYGEN The UK’s favourite chlorine alternative for hot tubs and spas, Surex OO2 Oxysure excels itself year by year and has become increasingly popular for spa showrooms and hot tubs dealers. Surex OO2 Oxysure is active oxygen and has no smell or no taste. it can be used in spas, hot tubs, above-ground pools, swimming pools and baths. Surex OO2 basically replaces the daily application of chlorine granules leaving a clean, no smell no taste, almost natural feeling water in the pool or spa. The product is ecologically friendly and suitable for those with Asthma, Ezcema

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 71-74_SPN_Feb_16_Water_Treatment.indd 73

and similiar complaints. Surex OO2 Oxysure is a peroxygen, it liberates oxygen and is as powerful as any chlorine donor and more powerful than bromine. Surex OO2 Oxysure is the ultimate in swimming comfort. Additionally Surex OO2 Oxysure is more conductive to a safer ecology – no CFC’s are given off into the atmosphere and the compound cannot affect the environment when the pool water is backwashed down the drain, thus can be named ‘green friendly’. Surex OO2 Oxysure cannot produce the wheezes associated with the use of chlorine in indoor applications and rashes often experienced with bromine. It is also far more gentle on the fabric of the pool, liners and ancillary equipment especially covers and pool cleaners. The compound has much less effect on the degradation of air conditioning systems than chlorine substances and gives a superior atmospheric environment.

GOLDEN COAST’S PICK OF THE BEST DOMESTIC POOL TREATMENTS Poor water quality does more than damage your customers’ health… it ruins their wet leisure enjoyment. For pool and spa companies, it is

important to give your customers the tools to protect against this threat… whatever their circumstance or budget. Ozone and UV sanitising systems help reduce the quantities of chemicals needed for disinfection, while also reducing chlorine levels in the water. Triogen systems, available exclusively through Golden Coast, offer cost-saving advantages which make sound investments for householders. For price-conscious customers, Golden Coast offers the Swimmer range of chemical treatments, which have been especially formulated for swimming pools. The comprehensive line-up includes: the Swimmer Filter Cleaner, for pre-season cleansing of filter media in both sand and cartridge filters, the Swimmer Algae Destroyer, which clears any winter build-up, and the Swimmer Tidemark Cleaner, which inhibits the staining and damaging effect of dissolved metals and minerals in the water. The FROG Pool Cycler, is an affordable, allin-one solution for in-ground pools up to 151 cubic metres. This effective water treatment system allows water flow adjustment through its reservoir, while regulating the backup sanitiser feed from the inner chamber.

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS ELECRO’S QUANTUM TAKES EFFECTIVE WATER TREATMENT TO A NEW LEVEL There is no question that traditional water treatment methods such as chlorine, bromine and salt electrolysis are still widely used, and for good reason – they provide a lasting residual effect in the pool and chemicals such as chlorine are fairly inexpensive – however these methods do have their downsides. For those looking for a solution that moves away from the traditional methods of water treatment and that features the latest technology, Elecro have launched the Quantum – a product which takes pool hygiene and water clarity to the ultimate level. The Quantum uses photocatalytic oxidisation and nano crystal technology, a treatment that has been tested and proven in other prestigious industries such as hospitals and water treatment plants, and is now being brought to the swimming pool industry, advancing water sanitisation to the highest level. Photocatalytic oxidisation tops the oxidisation strength results tables and therefore packs a punch, providing supreme defence against pollutants found in pool water, whilst also remaining one of the safest methods as the reaction is contained within the reaction chamber, and unlike other methods such as ozone, no harmful gases are released into the environment – only pure, fresh water is returned back the pool. So how does it work? This advanced technology replicates nature’s own technique for sterilising our planet’s atmosphere and making it habitable; UV light striking the inner lining of

the catalyst assembly (bonded with a coating of anatase, silver and platinum nano crystals), combined with intelligent inbuilt technology, creates a reaction that obliterates all bacteria in its path – simultaneously generating an abundance of hydroxyl radicals. It kills what other treatment methods such as chlorine, UV and ozone cannot touch (such as Naegleria Fowleri and Adenovirus), achieving exponential reductions in unwanted bacteria, pathogens and viruses never seen before.

The innovative Aquablanc range of chlorinefree pool and spa products is seeing a rapid growth in its popularity. Domestic pools and spas using Aquablanc, benefit from pure, gentle and safe water without the accompanying odours and sometimes harsher bathing conditions that are associated with traditional halogen (chlorine and bromine) based sanitisers. There are two easy-to-use options for swimming pools. Traditional Aquablanc Combi Tablets are based on a double tablet system, usually applied on a weekly basis to achieve safe, crystal clear water. Aquablanc O2 Gentle is offered as a truly multifunctional twin sachet system. Based on active oxygen with a powerful liquid algaecide, the innovative formula also comprises scale prevention and pH buffers. This gentle approach to pool care is soft to the skin and eyes and convenient to dose, usually on a weekly basis. This really does offer the ultimate luxurious bathing environment. Hot tubs and spas are well served also. Aquablanc Spa provides an easy to use, soft

and gentle sanitising system for domestic hot tubs. Supplied as a comprehensive starter kit or individual products, the two Aquablanc Spa components work in synergy for safe and gentle spa water. Aquablanc as a system is very flexible, so can also be used in conjunction with regular balancing, oxidising and speciality products. SPN

UV SYSTEMS

UV – A Shining Light In Water Treatment When it comes to the treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, UV Systems are now an established and effective choice for many scenarios, particularly those in a commercial setting. Their success should come as no surprise as UV provides many benefits, including a large reduction in the use of chlorine. With the wider acceptance of UV comes a wider offering of solutions and this issue, we take a look at the current ultra violet options By Jon Wadeson

U

V systems work by utilising radiation from UV lamps to inactivate the cells of undesirable organisms by altering the DNA of these harmful bacteria, micro organisms and pathogens. The results are cleaner and safer sanitised pool water and a reduced need for chemical treatment. Now accepted as an effective choice for water treatment, UV systems have come along way over recent years but manufacturers aren’t resting on their laurels. In fact, it seems the complete opposite with plenty of new products and innovations being released over the last 12 months and this issue, we round up just some of the UV options that are available for the season ahead.

LESS IS MORE – THE WORLDS’ MOST COMPACT UV SYSTEM atg UV Technology’s long awaited ‘Wafer’ design was unveiled in October at Piscina & Wellness in Barcelona, and it comes as no surprise that this revolutionary new range has atg UV’s new WF system installed within a UK swimming pool plant room

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 77-79_SPN_Feb_16_UV.indd 77

already had an enormous impact within the wet leisure industry. The company’s new WF range, known as the Wafer due to its ultra-compact footprint, is the most compact UV system available in the aquatics market today. At around a third of the size of comparative UV systems, with significantly reduced maintenance space and improved performance, it offers easy to install and retrofit solutions that will fit the tightest of plant rooms. Whist the WF range is designed to be the most compact system on the market, its hydraulically optimised design and leading polychromatic lamp technology will also make it one of the most efficient and best performing. As a minimum, the WF range will provide a 99.9% reduction of chlorine resistant microorganisms. Importantly, the WF UV system will provide a reduction in combined chlorine levels, which removes consumer health issues such as unpleasant smells, red eyes, asthma, contamination from by-products and chemical structural damage.

This next generation of UV system design has taken the market by storm, with leisure contractors and operators in the UK and across the world commenting on its unique design and performance: ‘The UV equivalent of the smartphone’ said Simon Whittingham, Managing Director at FT Leisure while Darryl Gleeson, Director at Sterling Hydrotech said it was ‘A revolutionary piece of kit’. Steve Hallam at David Hallam Ltd agrees with atg UV and believes the system is the ‘Next generation for the swimming pool industry’. Operators will also benefit from the inclusion of atg UV’s premium SPECTRA II control system as standard, which includes a wide range of features such as data stream monitoring, process interlocks and programmable set points. A key feature includes variable power stepping from 100% to 50% power at no extra cost, allowing operators to optimise the operational power of their system to match bather loads and pool opening times.

HYBRID SPECTRUM TAKES UV DISINFECTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL Elecro’s Spectrum UV has established a market leading reputation for quality and performance throughout the industry and their UV products are the perfect complement to traditional methods for sanitising water such as chlorine, bromine or salt chlorination. In addition to altering the DNA of harmful pollutants and preventing them from reproducing, other benefits of using the Elecro’s Spectrum Hybrid applies all the benefits of their tried and trusted Spectrum UV and takes the next step forward by adding hydroxyl radical technology

Elecro Spectrum UV unit is the reduction in the need to shock treat the pool, typically reducing chemical consumption between 25-50% and deactivating some viruses and pathogens that chlorine, bromine and salt electrolysis cannot, such as cryptosporidium. In October last year at Piscina Barcelona, Elecro launched two exceptional new water treatment systems – the Quantum, which utilises a unique photocatalytic system and the Spectrum Hybrid, the next generation of UV treatment. The Spectrum Hybrid applies all the benefits of the tried and trusted Spectrum UV and takes the next step forward by adding hydroxyl radical technology for superior results. Traditional UV systems are effective at removing chloramines, however they only neutralise contaminants, whereas the Spectrum Hybrid oxidises, actually destroying the harmful pollutants and providing an efficiency boost of approximately 45% compared to other conventional UV systems. Nature provides the inspiration behind the Spectrum Hybrid. The vast majority of the sterilising effect in our atmosphere is produced by UV light reacting with cloud surfaces to produce hydroxyl radicals. Spectrum Hybrid uniquely replicates this effect within a compact polished titanium reaction chamber that increases the intensity of the UV light, thus increasing the dose and power of UV sterilisation. Furthermore by utilising the polished titanium as a reflector, all of the problems of corrosion associated with stainless steel units are avoided. When the UV light reacts with the polished titanium chamber, hydroxyl radicals are naturally produced. Hydroxyl radicals are exceptionally mobile molecules that are highly volatile and

possess the power to oxidise; once they have reacted with the pollutant it then converts back into water. The Spectrum Hybrid is the perfect choice for those that favour UV treatment but are looking to take water sanitisation to the next level.

SWIMLINE UVEO TREATS POOL WATER WITH UP TO 60% LESS POWER CONSUMPTION Hanovia’s new SwimLine Ultraviolet Energy Optimised (UVEO) system delivers a guaranteed, consistent UV dose with maximum efficiency for swimming pool operators. Designed using Hanovia’s 90 years of experience in UV treatment, the new SwimLine UVEO takes advantage of an optimised hydraulic design to provide up to 60% improvement in the treatment capacity over conventional UV systems. This means reduced running costs for 24/7 applications such as swimming pools without compromising on biosecurity or chloramine control. A prime benefit is that treatment is performed with just a single UV lamp, eliminating the need to install a bigger system with multiple lamps. This saves on upfront capital costs and lifetime spares costs. The system also utilises an electronic ballast with ‘stepless’ power control, automatically adjusting power to match pool operating conditions continuously. The SwimLine UVEO is optimised specifically for pool bio-safety and ensures chlorine-resistant organisms, such as cryptosporidium and giardia, are controlled with the optimum UV dose and the product is compliant with both local country standards and the emerging US Model Aquatic Health Code requirements.

UV SYSTEMS Topline Electronic’s low pressure UV systems have reduced energy consumption and are suitable for all types of pools

The optimised medium pressure UV lamp continues to provide the excellent chloramine reduction for which Hanovia’s traditional pool products are renowned. This ensures effective control of these unpleasant by-products of chlorine dosing which are responsible for the typical ‘chlorine smell’, red, stinging eyes and skin irritations. Controlling chloramines also delivers high quality pool water, reduced corrosion of metal structures and a healthier environment for bathers. The system comes with Hanovia’s patented ‘UVGuard’, which allows safe checking of the UV sensor (performance monitoring instrument) using a unique ‘eyelid shutter’ design, which protects the operator from exposure to UV light. The SwimLine UVEO comes in a range of sizes and treatment capacities to meet typical pool sizes. It is designed for ease and is fitted with an internal auto-wiper which maintains UV output efficiency by regularly cleaning the quartz sleeve housing the UV lamp. Lamp replacement is also quick and easy, with the system designed to allow easy access, even in small plant rooms.

GOLDEN COAST OFFER COST SAVING TRIOGEN SYSTEMS UV sanitising systems help reduce the quantities of chemicals needed for disinfection, while also reducing chlorine levels in the water. Triogen systems, available exclusively through Golden Coast, offer cost-saving advantages which make sound investments. Energy-efficient, low pressure UV lamps power Triogen’s TR2 disinfection systems. Its lifetime operating costs are low, thanks to a robust, hardwearing, low-maintenance construction, with a reactor body made from UV-inhibited, corrosion-proof polymeric materials. Other cost-saving features include an automatic shutdown to conserve power in the absence of flow. The savings don’t stop there as the compact units are quick and easy to fit, keeping installation costs low. Each TR2 system is supplied complete with union adapters, a pressure gauge and a flow switch, ready for simple connection to a suitably protected power supply. Differentsized models are available to suit flow rates

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 77-79_SPN_Feb_16_UV.indd 79

of between 11 and 40 cubic metres per hour. They are equipped with between one and four lamp bulbs, producing an irradiation dose of 30 mJ per square centimetre. Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams says: “We are very keen to bring the benefits of Triogen’s technology to more pool and spa owners, particularly in the residential sector,” adding: “But while affordability is key for owners, the main benefit of switching to UV disinfection is improved water quality.”

TOPLINE’S ULTRAVIOLET GENERATION When discussing the alternatives to chlorination of a pool, ultraviolet generation (UV) is most likely to be suggested. It’s important to be clear that UV generation is not an alternative to chlorine. With ten years of experience in the manufacturing of low pressure UV, Topline Electronics, of Hailsham in the UK, are very well placed to explain the overall benefits of UV, but are quick to point out that UV is not a replacement for chlorine. In terms of minimising chlorine use UV can reduce the amount of free chlorine that is measured in a pool by up to 50%, but since UV has no residual effect outside the UV chamber, the pool requires an additional residual disinfectant to minimise cross infection between bathers. Photo-oxidisation through UV generation reduces the amount of dilution required to remove unwanted combined chlorine compounds from the pool and will also inactivate the microorganisms that chlorine cannot easily remove, such as cryptosporidium. A typical pool can reduce the free chlorine residual from 1.5 ppm to around 0.8 ppm, resulting in an increased user experience, both in the pool and the pool surround atmosphere. The benefits of the Topline Low Pressure UV, when compared to a medium pressure UV system, are much lower energy consumption and reduced spares requirements. A 7 kW medium pressure system will typically use around £6,000 of electricity per year. A Topline low pressure unit will use only £500 of electricity in a year, and requires only a lamp and quartz sleeve change each year, minimising the spares requirements many UV units require.

Triogen systems, available exclusively through Golden Coast, offer cost-saving advantages which make sound investments

The Topline ultraviolet treatment system offers a unique full flow design to eliminate dead spots and areas of poor flow within the chamber, and can be configured to treat any size of system and is used widely for all types of swimming pools, spas, hydrotherapy pools, interactive play structures and water features. POOL AND SPA PUMPS

Cost Effective, Adaptable And Imperative! Providing powerful circulation in any pool or spa system, pumps lie at the heart of every plant room and are an essential component in an effective overall system. In recent years, a number of manufacturers have added new variable speed options to their pumps and the choice on offer is now wider than ever. Thankfully selecting the right pump just became easier as we highlight some of the best options that are available this year By Andrea Hartshorne

T

oday’s pool and spa pump technology offers a virtually maintenance-free operation but as many experts agree, there must be some human intervention to ensure everything runs smoothly. These background systems are the stalwart required for both domestic and commercial pools and spas and the technological advances mean that the systems continue to improve and become more energy-efficient year on year. Suitable for a range of budgets, whether used by a domestic pool owner or leisure centre manager, these quiet, hard-working systems are impossible to operate without and ensure a pool or spa works to their best ability.

LIGHTHOUSE POOLS – LOWERING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT As energy costs rise, alongside the greater understanding of the environmental impact Lighthouse Pools have a variable speed pump to suit any installation and budget including the very successful 1.63hp Flo Pro VS

our energy usage has on the planet, pool owners are increasingly looking at ways in which new technology can not only save them money but reduce the impact their pool has. With the advent of variable speed pumps, there is a great opportunity for pool owners to reduce their carbon footprint whilst saving on the running costs of a pool. Although the initial outlay, on a variable speed (VS) pump, is sometimes a barrier for pool companies to promote, the reality is that with the right education most discerning pool owners would be happy to invest for the future. By utilising an online calculator, like the one which can be found on Lighthouse Pools’ website, both the installer and end user can see for themselves the savings to be made. As an example a typical indoor pool, which requires 24 hour filtration due to air handling requirements, can save the extra cost within the first year compared to a standard 1.5hp pump. With a complete three year warranty on the higher end pumps the end user can purchase with the peace of mind that once they have recouped the extra outlay they have a least another two years of fully covered savings. Although relatively new to the UK, the Zodiac variable speed pump range have been sold in Australia and America for a number of years and are manufactured by Zodiac’s American arm, formerly Jandy. With the launch of the 1hp e3 Flo Pro to run alongside the very successful 1.63hp Flo Pro VS, Lighthouse Pools have a variable speed pump to suit any installation and budget.

The Viron P320 eVo is a fully variable speed energy efficient pump which is ideal for smaller pools with flow rates under 15 m³/hr – 18 m³/hr

THE VIRON TAKES ENERGY EFFICIENCY TO A NEW LEVEL Certikin is proud to introduce the next evolution in energy efficiency – Viron eVo pumps are a range of fully variable speed energy efficient pumps to suit all pool sizes, filtration systems and budgets. With 8 star energy rating, the Viron Pump reduces CO2 emissions, promises a quiet operation and long equipment life. Compared to conventional single speed pumps, the Viron eVo pump will make dramatic savings on operating costs. Most swimming pools are effectively filtered and sanitised with flow rates ranging from 7-12 m³/hr. In fact, they will never require more than 15 m³/hr – 18 m³/hr for tasks such as cleaning the filter or vacuuming the pool, and for these the Viron P320 eVo is ideal. For larger pools, multiple spa jets, water features or in-floor cleaning systems, a larger capacity pump may be required. For these applications, the Viron P600 eVo pump offers an impressive 36 m³/ hr flow rate. Each pump speed can be changed to

As Temperatures Drop, Sauna Sales Rise Over the course of last summer, West Virginia-based sauna manufacturer Almost Heaven Saunas saw an impressive increase in sales when compared to summer 2014. It was an exciting realisation because during the heat and swelter of summer, customers don’t tend to think of purchasing a sauna. Sauna sales traditionally start to spike during the autumn and winter months. Steady sales during the warm months are proving to be merely a small glimpse of what’s in store for the veteran sauna manufacturer this season. At their factory in West Virginia, Almost Heaven Saunas is hitting previously unimagined production numbers, thanks in large part to new equipment, solid procedure, and a team of exceptional employees – and it’s all coming together

Hotel Potential Recognised For KLAFS S1 Sauna Anyone wishing to transform a hotel room into a private spa suite by installing a sauna, previously needed to have sufficient space for it. And that space could then no longer be used for other purposes once the sauna was installed. That is, until the introduction of the KLAFS S1 Sauna. The revolutionary, room-saving sauna S1 is the world’s first sauna to retract at the touch of a button – just like the zoom lens of a camera. In its fully retracted position, the S1 is only 60 centimetres deep, just like the average closet – and really large if guests want to relax in ‘their’ sauna. In this way, significantly more hotel rooms were able to be quickly and easily transformed into private spa suites with little building effort. The huge potential of the S1 Sauna in the future of the hotel sector has been recognised by the jury of the Intergastra Innovationspreis 2016. A jury, made up of renowned experts from science

and industry associations, selected the sauna innovation as the winner in the ‘Object and Facility Management’ category. With the prize, which has been awarded for the ninth time in a row in three categories, the experts estimate groundbreaking ideas for the successful future of hotels. The three winners prevailed over some 100 competing ideas and will be celebrated with a special show at the Intergastra 2016 (20-24 February in Stuttgart), one of the most important European trade shows for the hotel and restaurant business. It is already the fourth major victory within some weeks for the KLAFS sauna S1, which was presented in a well-received world premiere only a few months ago. KLAFS GmbH & Co. IN MY VIEW

Success, Sponsorship And The Year Ahead Following the success of Team GB at the 2015 World Championships in Russia, this issue we caught up with the double medallist diver Jack Laugher who has another busy schedule in 2016

2015

was a very successful year for Team GB diver Jack Laugher who collected two Bronze medals (3m springboard and the 3m springboard synchro) at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia. The 20 year-old from Yorkshire has tasted a great deal of success so far, as 2010 saw him win the 1m and 3m springboard titles at both the European Junior Championships and the World Junior Championships. In 2011 and 2012, he was the British champion in the 3m springboard and also the British Gas National Cup Gold medallist in the 1m and 3m springboard competitions. In 2012, he became the Junior World champion in both the 3m springboard and 3m Synchro competition (with Tom Daley). At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he was the Gold medalist in the 1m springboard. In this issue, we caught up with Jack, who gave his thoughts on sponsorship, his successes to date and the Olympic year ahead. SPN: You’re sponsored by Complete Pool Controls (CPC). How did that sponsorship come about? My next door neighbour, Steve Hipps, is involved with CPC and he suggested that they should sponsor me on my journey to the Olympics! Jack officially opened the new offices of sponsor CPC

SPN: How important is it that you receive sponsorship/what benefits does sponsorship provide? The benefits of me being sponsored are that I have been able to move to Leeds to train in a full time programme. I used to live one hour away from training and could never commit to a full programme because of travel distance. Training full time means I can make the changes and improvements I need to be successful. The support of CPC has given me independence which has been massive in improving my performances both in training and competition. SPN: Where do you train in the UK and how have the facilities changed since the London 2012 Olympics? I train in Leeds. We have had great facilities in Leeds for many years now but we have seen a massive increase in participation and a few new coaches and equipment through the centre. It’s been great since 2012! What I find most unbelievable is that we now have a long waiting list to join the diving club. This would have been unheard of before London and hopefully over the next few years we will see some really talented divers coming through the ranks.

SPN: You have visited SPATEX before, what were your impressions of the Show and the trade side of things? I’ve been to SPATEX the last couple of years and really enjoyed it each time I’ve gone. I get to meet and greet people who visit the CPC stand and I get to socialise with the people from CPC too which is always good fun. I never knew so much went on in the pool industry and it’s always fun to learn new things! I always make sure I sneak off for five minutes to look at the latest hot tubs as well – I can dream! SPN: Will you be at SPATEX in 2016? I believe so. I just need to make sure my calendar is free and then I’m able to go! SPN: Finally, with the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio now looming ever closer, what are your goals for 2016? My goals for 2016 are to try and improve on what I did last year. I always set myself this goal as I believe as long as I am moving forward, that’s all I can hope for! Of course Rio is in the back of my mind, but if I can just make sure that I improve from 2015 then hopefully I will put myself in a really strong position this year to do well. SPN wishes Jack and the rest of the GB team every success in Rio.
