After what has felt like another year of ups and downs, we’ve finally made it to December and that means our last issue of what’s been yet another unpredictable 12 months which seem to have completely flown by! Thinking back to the start of this year, the mood was pretty buoyant and there was actually a healthy amount of optimism around. That’s not to say this year has been a disaster – from speaking with a number of companies across the various sectors that make up the wet leisure industry, it appears far from it – but it certainly has been another challenging period with all the usual suspects (weather, economy, inflation… need I go on?) playing their part in making it so. 2023 has also seen more than the usual changes with regards to the supply of products to the various sectors with distributors having what can only be described as a major shake up regarding the brands and products that they supply. This has been happening pretty much throughout the year and some of the changes are reflected inside this issue, both in the features and news sections. Further afield, with the trade shows in Europe and America now concluded, the usual annual release of new products has also taken place which will further add to the options for the year ahead. At Germany’s aquanale event, the EUSA Award winners were also announced and you can see all the winners in this issue. Also, inside you’ll find our annual look at dosing pumps and control systems, automated products which quietly go about their business behind the scenes as they play their own, crucial part in delivering a safe and efficient water treatment system. In many cases, they also provide the control of a lot more than

Moving away from the plant room and looking at the more glamorous end of the product spectrum, in this seasonal issue we highlight some soothing sauna and steam products, wellness items which are perfect for relaxation of the mind, body and soul, especially during these chillier months. We’ve some great value for money entry-level swim and party spas too, products that are still proving to be popular with many families around the country. Safety covers also goes under the spotlight as we take a closer look at a range of options which are marketed on the strength of reducing accidents through denying direct access to any pool or spa. As if that wasn’t enough, we have a piece on Certikin as they celebrate their 60th Anniversary, plus we feature some brands from Belgium as we visited the country as guests of Fairlocks Pool Products. Our regular Opinion piece takes a different format this issue as we reveal the thoughts from an industry roundtable event which focused on the ways to create a sustainable future for public wet leisure facilities. There’s also a piece from the STA’s Luke Griffiths as he highlights the elements needed for setting up a swim school pool. As always, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with everything covered, that’s this issue and year complete – I hope there’s something of interest for all of SPN’s readers. Have a great festive break – we’ve all earned it this year! See you all in 2024!

Alliance Leisure Appointed To Deliver New Build Leisure Centre In Shropshire Planning has been approved to build a new, multimillion-pound leisure centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire. In addition to providing vital services to the local community, the state-of-the-art centre will also welcome visitors from surrounding areas, driving economic growth and creating new opportunities for local businesses. Funded by Shropshire Council the new £13.1m swimming and fitness centre will include a six-lane 25m pool, 41-station fitness suite and café on the ground floor, complemented by multi-function rooms on the first floor. “I am delighted that planning permission has been granted. It now means we are able to move forward with the development and soon offer more great opportunities for people living in Whitchurch and the surrounding areas to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said local Councillor Peggy Mullock. Alliance Leisure, one of the UK’s leading leisure developers, has been appointed to deliver the project, working through the UK Leisure Framework. Supporting Alliance will be Pellikaan as lead contractor, architects Roberts Limbrick and Axiom will be responsible for project management. The new build will reinstate much needed leisure facilities in a community which has been without a pool since Whitchurch Swimming Pool closed during the pandemic when ongoing maintenance issues deemed it unfit for purpose. It is anticipated the centre will open in mid-2025.

“Working with the council and our supplier partners through the UK Leisure Framework, we will deliver an efficient leisure facility built in response to the specific needs of the community. An active community is a happy, prosperous community and this is exactly the outcome we intend to deliver,” advised Julia Goddard, Senior Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure.

Hull’s New £10m Lido Is Officially Opened With Giant ‘Hook A Duck’ Competition Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness in Hull was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Hull recently, following a major £10m refurbishment project by construction firm Hobson & Porter. In addition to remodelling, refurbishing and redecorating the existing facilities, a new gym and fitness studio were added plus the scheme also saw the construction of a brand-new outdoor heated lido, replacing

the original one which closed more than 30 years ago. As part of the opening, a giant game of hook a duck took place in the new lido. Decorated by pupils at schools from across the city, more were launched into the lido with the winner receiving a class swim lesson. Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council,

said: “With Hull Fair now open, it feels very appropriate to have a giant hook-a-duck only a few hundred metres away! “The winners will receive the unique opportunity of a class swim lesson in the lido next summer – something that hasn’t taken place in the lido in over 30 years.” Richard Hunter, Managing Director from Hobson & Porter said: “Albert Avenue Pools & Fitness is now a superb addition to Hull’s leisure and fitness estate and Hobson & Porter are incredibly proud to have played a part in realising this bold and exciting vision.” James Prest, Project Manager for Hull Esteem, said: “The transformation of Albert Avenue Pools has been a fantastic project to be part of. Working in partnership with the council, our contractors Hobson & Porter and the local supply chain to develop this much loved facility into a vibrant modern leisure centre that the people of Hull can enjoy for years to come has been an absolute pleasure.”

HARTLEPOOL’S NEW LEISURE CENTRE GIVEN GO-AHEAD Councillors have unanimously agreed a revised funding strategy for Hartlepool’s new state-of-theart leisure centre, clearing the way for construction work to start in a matter of weeks. This follows an increase in the cost of the scheme, primarily due to a range of factors outside the Council’s control. These include the impact of the Covid pandemic on the construction industry, the impact of inflation on the costs of materials and increasing energy costs. The mix of facilities within the new leisure centre will include on the wet leisure side a 25m 8-lane main pool, a 25m 4-lane learner pool with movable floor, a leisure pool including race slide and water play features plus spectator seating. Councillor Mike Young, Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that councillors have supported the revised funding strategy which means that the residents of Hartlepool will now get the new leisure centre they deserve.”

An Elite Treatment For An Awardwinning Swimming Academy As a company that offers expert swimming tuition for all ages and abilities throughout Cambridge and Suffolk, Elite Swimming Academy is reliant on the provision of warm, clean, private swimming pools. This dilapidated school pool in Cambridgeshire is a fine example of the Academy’s ability to identify a pool’s potential and, employing the right team and equipment, transform it into a pool that meets their exacting requirements. The Academy turned to Huntingdon-based Aqualeaf to do the refurbishment, with Certikin supplying all the main ingredients. The major restoration began with the installation of a welded on site liner which was crowned with an Aquacomet enclosure to make it an all-year round facility. Certikin’s site-applied lining option was an obvious choice, given its speed of installation and its long-lasting tailor-made finish and durability. The service is quick and efficient – taking around four working days for an average sized hopper pool with steps and there is no curing or standing period. It’s suitable for both new and old pools of domestic and

commercial size and can accommodate complex shapes, steps, ledges and pits. In addition to providing safety, making the pool weather-proof and extending the pool season were top priorities for the Academy. An enclosure also decreases the amount of chemicals needed and reduces water evaporation and heat loss. The Academy chose an Aquacomet endless summer enclosure measuring 17m x 10m which they bolted on to a custom-built changing block. Taking 20 weeks to complete, the derelict pool was transformed into a state-of-the-art indoor facility, complete with luxury changing facilities, toilets and showers, that the Academy is justly proud of. Work Begins On Epping’s New £33m Leisure Centre And Swimming Pool A car park in Essex has recently been closed to make way for the exciting development of the new Epping Leisure Centre. The centre will replace the existing Epping Sports Centre in the town, and forms one part of a wider development project for Epping. On the water leisure side, Epping Leisure Centre will feature a six-lane, 25 metre main pool plus learner pool and the facility will become the most energy efficient in the district, supporting the council’s aim to become carbon neutral by 2030. As well as air-sourced heat pumps and digital technology, the centre will incorporate the highest levels of insulation into construction, keeping future energy bills and carbon emissions as low as possible. Epping Leisure Centre will

be delivered by Epping Forest District Council in partnership with Places Leisure. Pellikaan Construction Ltd is carrying out the construction work and return to the area having previously been involved in the building of Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre in 2017. Gert-Jan Peeters, Managing Director of Pellikaan Construction Ltd said: “We are pleased to be part of this project, delivering new leisure facilities for the people in Epping. We look forward to working on the new centre, incorporating sustainable construction solutions as well as providing a great mix of leisure opportunities to the community.” Plans for the new Epping Leisure Centre were first approved by Epping Forest District Council in October 2021. Since then the project estimate has risen by £8m to £33m.

IN BRIEF CONSULTATION PROCESS UNDERWAY FOR EAST LONDON LIDO Redbridge Council in East London is proposing to build a new lido in Valentines Park which will provide families and local people with a new leisure facility to enjoy in the heart of the borough. The project is subject to planning approval and local people have been invited to share their views as part of this process. Councillor Kam Rai, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council said: “The new lido will provide a sustainable, fun and social place for people to exercise in the great outdoors, while boosting our local economy and restoring the heritage of Valentines Park. As well as a new swimming pool, we’re proposing to create a splashpad for children, a café, a gym and studio space so Valentines Park can become a hub for our local communities to meet, exercise and enjoy.”

TAMESIDE CALLS IN WRECKING BALL FOR ASHTON POOL In the North-west, Tameside Council has signed off the demolition of a public pool facility, despite receiving a 7,000-signature petition opposing the move. The council closed Ashton Swimming Pool and plans to knock it down because operator Active Tameside can no longer afford to run it at a loss and the authority has no funding for maintenance work. Tameside said it had “carefully considered” calls to keep the facility open, acknowledging in a report that Active Tameside’s proposal to close the centre was “disappointing for everyone”. However, the authority has concluded that it is no longer feasible to keep the 50-yearold building open due to its being “highly inefficient”, as well as rising energy costs and inflation.

LLDC Appoints Everyone Active As New Operator Of The London Aquatics Centre More than ten years on since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) has appointed Everyone Active, the longestestablished leisure contractor in the UK, as the new operator for the London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The eight-year contract (with the option to extend) will cover the operation of the award-winning Dame Zaha Hadid’s designed building. The London Aquatics Centre hosts local, London-wide and national galas and since London 2012 has been host to major championships including the European Aquatics Championships (2016), the World Para Swimming Championships (2019) and multi-year dates for the FINA Diving World Series. The London Aquatics Centre attracts more than one million visits a year for community use and learn to swim programmes as well as club and elite performance training. Edward Fane, Head of Venues at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, said: “This prestigious and high value contract is critically important to the long-term legacy of the Games of London 2012 and we thank GLL for their great service since operating the venue since 2014. We look forward to working in partnership with Everyone

Active for the next eight years, to deliver continuous improvement and build on the remarkable aquatics legacy to date, whilst driving best value for the taxpayer and local communities.” Everyone Active’s Regional Director, Duncan Jefford, said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Everyone Active, and this new partnership with London Legacy Development Corporation marks a monumental step for our business at an iconic sports venue. We look forward to continuing the legacy of this state-of-the-art facility and inspiring the next generation of sportspeople. GLL continue to operate the venue before handing over to Everyone Active on 1 March 2024.

Pool Support Fund To Keep Almost 200 Facilities Afloat At the start of November, Sport England announced the swimming pools and leisure centres across England that will receive funding to support them in the face of rising operating costs. More than 100 local authorities across England have received funding from the Swimming Pool Support Fund to help them keep public pools open in the face of challenging financial pressures. In total, 196 publicly owned leisure facilities with swimming pools from 103 authorities have been awarded a share of £20.3m to support with increased cost pressures, associated with recent rises in energy and operating costs. These sites were selected based on their risk of closure, their proximity to other publicly accessible swimming facilities, and the level of demand at each location. The central Government fund, which was announced as part of the Spring

Budget, is worth £60.3m in total and is split into two phases, with the balance of the fund being used to invest in the improved energy efficiency of public facilities with pools in the medium to long term. Sport England Executive Director Lisa DoddMayne said it’s been important to distribute the funding fairly and quickly given the crucial role these facilities play in communities across the country. “We know just how vital swimming pools and leisure centres are to our nation’s activity levels, which is why Sport England is proud to have played a central role in the delivery of this fund,” she explained, but added: “Today’s announcement is an important moment in time but is, by no means, the end of the work facing us or the support available as we continue to work with our partners to ensure the long-term viability of these vital community resources.”

Mapei Systems Safeguard The Future At Northcroft Lido A comprehensive range of Mapei products has been used to renovate the historic lido at Northcroft Leisure Centre in Newbury. Investigation works and preparation of the concrete repair specification were carried out by KRP Consulting Engineers for West Berkshire Council. Mapei products were supplied by Resapol, with works carried out by Structural Renovations on behalf of Main Contractor, Universal Civils & Build. Mapei was approached in late 2020 and asked to put together an outline proposal to repair the lido. This was developed and detailed discussions were held with KRP Consulting Engineers, with assistance from Olton Structural Consulting, before finalising the proposal. Following extensive consultations with local residents, works commenced last May to save the lido and improve the facility for future generations. The facility now features

policy documentation to meet regulatory compliance procedures, adherence to lesson structures and ensuring there is Puddle Ducks founder by Jo Stone cohesive branding across the board. Fiona said: “Knights has supported many ongoing success stories, but Puddle Ducks is by far one of the most exciting ventures to watch expand. “It’s been incredibly enjoyable to be a part of this next stage of growth, which will give franchisees full control of their operations, without being solely reliant on third party-owned pools such as those in hotels, schools and gyms. It’s an interesting move and you can really see it taking off, especially as it is backed by strong, ethical values and the franchisor is constantly finding new ways to help franchisees maximise their businesses.”

Now in its 13th year, the annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey spearheaded by Golden Coast is open and calling on the sector to provide insight into the ups and downs of 2023. “We want to hear from everyone. Whether you’re a distributor, manufacturer or an engineer, and from companies big and small,” said Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “The more feedback and data we can gather, the more informed the whole industry can be next year. The survey is open for a limited time, so don’t miss your chance to have your say.” Simply visit the website to take part. Survey responses are then gathered into a report which will be freely available online (along with all previous reports) or as printed copies at SPATEX 2024. Responses are anonymous and may be quoted so that members from all areas of the sector have their voices and opinions heard. “The report is invaluable as it shows us where businesses have found opportunities as well as where they might have struggled,” said Adam. “Everyone is still working through a cost-of-living crisis exasperated by spiralling energy costs and that will undoubtedly affect our sector in many ways. The survey report will give all businesses a wider perspective on the market and can help with making decisions further down the line. “Over the course of the past 12 surveys we have conducted, we have seen so many interesting trends come and go and we can see how the industry has changed and adapted. That level of detail has only been possible thanks to those who complete the survey. We encourage anyone working in the industry to go online and take a look at the questionnaire. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and your feedback is essential in helping us monitor how the sector is faring. Plus, it could provide you with data you need to inform your business plan over the coming months.”

The high performance Mapei specification included products to repair and stabilise the concrete foundation of the lido and to create a new waterproof and watertight surface. The specification comprised: Lamposilex fast set pre-blended mortar, Mapeproof Swell moisture expanding rubber-based hydrophilic sealant, Mapemortar HB R3 repair mortar and Mapeband TPE flexible sealing and waterproofing tape. During the second stage of works, Mapefix VE SF ultra-rapid hardening structural anchor was applied, along with Adesilex PG1 & Adesilex PG4 thixotropic epoxy adhesives and Epojet LV epoxy resin. The surface build-up was then completed with Topcem fast drying hydraulic binder for screed and Mapelastic Foundation flexible cementitious waterproofing mortar, and Mapeflex PU 45 FT – a rapid-hardening paintable polyurethane sealant. Now completed, the £5.7m project is projected to increase visitor numbers from 15-20,000 per annum to over 50,000 over the increased outdoor swim season which will now run from Easter to September. Swimming In Success – Knights Accelerates Puddle Ducks Expansion Franchise lawyers at professional services company Knights have helped take one of the UK’s leading pre-school swimming brands to new heights. Fiona Boswell, commercial partner and franchising expert at Knights, has been working with Puddle Ducks, a 20-year established franchise network, for over seven years. The franchisor has achieved five-star franchisee satisfaction for 11 years running and provides world-class swimming lessons to approximately 25,000 children UK-wide. The pioneering programme – founded by Jo Stone – is now designing and launching its own branded purpose-built pools to be rolled out across the UK, targeting venues within a family-orientated leisure or retail offering. The first, a flagship swimming centre in Barons Quay, Cheshire, is consistently fully booked and has a waiting list, which has activated Puddle Ducks’ growing search for new pools and swim teachers in a number of areas nationwide, in order to meet growing demand. Knights franchising, employment and property specialists have advised on several pool builds from a commercial perspective. This has involved revising contractual and

New Midlandsbased Service Engineer Boosts Heatstar’s Coverage

With the recent appointment of an additional service engineer based in the Midlands, Heatstar are continuing their commitment to extended their UK coverage to offer an even more comprehensive level of breakdown and maintenance support. This new appointment will mean the company can offer a speedier response time for callouts throughout the Midlands, North Wales and East Anglia, keeping those all essential breakdown times to a minimum. It is worth noting that Heatstar believe that after sales support is so vital that it is something that can never be left to chance or, for that matter, in the hands of any third party. That is why Heatstar’s nationwide fleet of service engineers are directly employed by them, with extensive experience, and are completely knowledgeable about the company’s entire product range. Each engineer works from an optimally equipped and GPS tracked vehicle carrying an array of specialist tools and a wide range of spare parts to cover most eventualities. It is also worth noting that when a

Heatstar engineer visits an end-user site, they are always aware that they are representing the trade installer. Even top quality, reliable products from brands like Heatstar benefit from planned, regular maintenance, and to that effect, the company offer planned maintenance agreements on all of their products to ensure that their systems continue to operate to their optimum performance. By providing maintenance contracts Heatstar can ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and serviced by fully qualified Heatstar engineers with an in-depth knowledge and experience of the products. This in turn offers complete peace of mind to the end user and demonstrates the after sales service and support offered by the installer in conjunction with Heatstar. In addition, Heatstar also offer a technical helpline service which can often resolve issues over the telephone. Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com

At the end of October, Safety Training Awards (STA) were proud to be named as a finalist at this year’s FAB Awards in not one, but two award categories ‘Innovation of the Year’ and ‘AO of the Year For Delivering Real Impact On Equity, Diversity And Inclusion’. The FAB (Federation of Awarding Bodies) Awards recognise the contributions made by awarding organisations and their employees to education and skills over the past year and Award winners will be announced at the end of November whilst this issue of SPN is at print. For the ‘Innovation of the Year’ category, STA were shortlisted for the impact ‘STAnd Up For Swimming’ had on the swimming teaching community in relation to offering free training in response to the workforce shortage. The judges were looking for evidence of how the campaign was developed and applied to bring something new to the awarding industry. The STA qualified for entry in the ‘AO of the Year For Delivering Real Impact On Equity, Diversity And Inclusion’ category following the creation of an industryfirst ‘Inclusion Study’ with ukactive to understand perceptions, incentives and motivations within the swimming teaching community; and how this research provided the springboard for STA to break down barriers and create inclusive, impactful projects, with STAnd Up For Swimming cited as one of the many examples. On hearing the news, Dave Candler, STA’s CEO said: “It is a great honour to be recognised by the FAB Awards for the proactive contribution we made in helping the aquatics community with the ongoing swimming teacher shortages, and how we could use STAnd Up to also make an impact in communities that needed it most; this forms part of our commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion and equality in grassroots swimming.” Safety Training Awards 01922 645097 www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk

ISPE General Secretary Announces Retirement After working for the Institute for over 34 years, ISPE General Secretary, Ross Alcock, has announced his impending retirement. It is anticipated that Ross will finally hang up his ‘ISPE boots’ in June/July 2024, by which time he will have served 35 years, but a firm date is yet to be agreed as the search now begins for his replacement. Ross has offered to assist the Institute and the ISPE Council for a period of time beyond his ‘final’ date, on a part-time basis, to ensure the service to Institute members is not interrupted and to assist in the smooth handover to new staff.

14 December 2023 SPN 14_SPN_Dec_23_People_News.indd 14

Having watched over the ISPE for so many years, Ross has seen many changes in and around the industry but feels it is now time to hand the reins of the day-to-day management of the Institute’s business to somebody new as the Institute heads towards its fiftieth anniversary. “The important thing for the Institute is to ensure that the handover process is as seamless as possible, and I want to reassure all ISPE members and students that I will do whatever I can to assist in this,” commented Ross. Looking to the immediate future, Ross advised that plans

are in hand for the 131st ISPE One-Day Seminar next March, and before that, there are 20 ISPE Workshops being presented during SPATEX 2024, (and Ross will be in his usual place on the ISPE stand opposite Technical Arena 1). The 2024 ISPE exams will go ahead in March too, so it’s very much business as usual. The search is now on to find a replacement for Ross and situation vacant adverts are being widely circulated. If you would like more details of what is involved please call the ISPE office or email ross@ispe.co.uk ISPE 01603 499959 www.ispe.co.uk

Dryden Aqua has appointed Certikin as a new official UK distributor for its highly popular Activated Filter Media (AFM®) from January 2024. Producing crystal clear water, AFM® is the best performing filter media on the market with a certified 1-micron filtration rate which will remove about 50% more organic substances from the water than sand and other glass filter media. Whilst manufactured from recycled glass, AFM® is different to other glass media on the market. During the production process the raw AFM® goes through a three-step chemical and thermal activation process. This activation is the reason for its 100% bio resistance, preventing bacterial growth in the filter bed as well as its amazing filtration performance. The self-sterilising surface prevents channelling and the biological conversion from urea to ammonia in the filter bed which is responsible for the toxic chlorine smells (trichloramines). With AFM® there is a lower consumption of chlorine and the risk of infections by bacteria and parasites such as Legionella, Pseudomonas and Cryptosporidium is reduced to an absolute minimum. Dryden Aqua proudly claim: “Our production is likely the most sophisticated and sustainable glass processing factory in the world. We ensure that our product has no sharp edges that can injure the operator or damage the filter. The material filters 20 times smaller particles than sand or any competitive product, as proven by the independent laboratory IFTS in France.” AFM® is a direct replacement for sand, doubling the performance of sand filters without the need for additional investments in infrastructure. It is suitable for all types of pools including natural and saltwater pools. “We are delighted to be appointed as an official UK distributor by Dryden Aqua and to add this high-performance filter media to our already extensive portfolio,” said Certikin’s Commercial & International Director, Steve Nelson. The global swimming pool market has witnessed a surge in innovative products in recent years and the Mr. Perfect pool heat pump from Aquark is one such product, having stood out recently with the judges of the iF Design Awards. Thanks to a design rooted in the pursuit of the perfect customer experience, it garnered recognition from this top global authority. The iF Design Award’s stringent evaluation criteria go beyond the exterior design of a device. It also assesses the underlying concepts, functionality, differentiation and impact. Designing a Pad cover and changing the traditional airflow path was indeed a bold innovation. Conventional pool heat pumps feature hollow front panels to provide proper airflow channels, as the devices require the rotation of axial fans to draw in lots of air for efficient heat exchange. However, this traditional airflow design presents various issues for users, such as easily causing air turbulence and generating noise as a result of wind blowing, fan blade vibration and friction between the fan and wind. Mr. Perfect revolutionises the traditional heat pump design and incorporates a unique fan structure – Turbofan. The air pressure difference generated by the ‘blade-free’ turbofan can divert the airflow at a stable speed to the outlet at a natural 90° angle, directly eliminating air turbulence and greatly contributing to zero mechanical noise performance. The sound level at a distance of one metre is only 38.4 dB(A) – as quiet as a refrigerator. To maintain an elegant and sleek design, Mr. Perfect also incorporates an embedded high-definition glass touch panel, replacing the industrial buttons of the past. It also supports connection to a mobile app, enabling more user-friendly control and information access. Users can effortlessly enjoy a year-round swimming experience with constant temperature control according to their preferences. Aquark +86 20 3781 4693 www.aquark.com

Polypool Appoints Certikin As Their Official Trade Distributor Certikin are delighted to have been appointed as the official trade distributor of one the UK’s leading panel pool systems, Polypool. Suitable for all types of projects, the Polypool system offers both an easy and quick solution from both a manufacturing and installation point of view. Even the fittings can be pre-installed if required, meaning all the installer has to do when the Polypool panels arrive on site, is install the system and connect the pipework. This results in an extremely quick construction time, for example, a 10m x 5m pool, the unique interlocking system can be used to create the pool structure within just half a day. “As the UK’s leading supplier, we are constantly looking to add to our portfolio, whether that be new and innovative products

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 17+19_SPN_December_2023_Prod+Eco_News_Alt.indd 19

or ones that are already well established such as Polypool,” said Certikin’s UK Business Director, Bruce Coppuck. “Over the past 20 years, the team at Polypool have developed the product to become the leading panel pool system in the UK and we are now delighted to be appointed as their exclusive distributor to the trade.” A key selling point of insulated panel pool

systems is their heat retention capabilities, and this is something which Polypool is unrivalled for. A Polypool is eight times more efficient at keeping in heat than your average double-glazed window, meaning the pool will heat up much faster and retain the heat for longer. With swimming pools regulated under Part L of the Building Regulations, all indoor pools must meet the strict U-value of 0.25W/m2/K. Polypool not only meets this government guideline but exceeds it with an extremely low U-value of just 0.18W/m2/K, a figure which is unmatched by any of its competitors. Owners and operators can get safe, low-cost and ecological pool water disinfection with the state-of-the-art DA-GEN (Dryden Aqua Generator) from Golden Coast. DA-GEN is an innovative hydrolyser that uses oxidation and low water conductivity to generate free radicals for water disinfection. Free radicals and other oxygen compounds such as ozone, peroxide and persulfate destroy organic substances and pathogens in the water while minimising the use of chlorine. Used with the Dryden Aqua Activator based on magnesium chloride, DA-GEN improves filtration and effectively removes phosphates, preventing the growth of algae and bacteria. The result? Exceptionally clean, clear water. DA-GEN works as a complete, fully automatic water treatment system, and is fitted with a built-in Wi-Fi module to allow users to control it using the DA-GEN app on their device. Parameters are monitored 24/7 including pH, dosing, free chlorine and/or redox, filtration, temperature, backwashing and automatic flocculation. “DA-GEN keeps everything under control and delivers outstanding water quality levels,” explained Hayden Phillips, North East Business Development, Golden Coast. “It works best with Dryden DAISY® system, so after the initial steps of enhancing filtration performance, coagulation and disinfection using natural UV, DA-GEN offers advanced oxidation for disinfection using free radicals.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

An outdoor build is a convenient way to access a spa-like state of relaxation. Compact in size, these barrel saunas heat up efficiently and save space. Featuring thick Nordic thermo spruce, the barrels are easy to transport and install. Thermally treated wood has structural advantages and a lighter weight in comparison to untreated wood. The thermo wood barrel saunas provide a unique combination of easy handling, excellent insulation and robust construction. A peaceful escape in the back garden, making the health benefits of a sauna accessible in a range of settings. Their benefits include: • Sustainably sourced Northern European spruce with a brushed texture • Chemical-free thermal modification that naturally enhances the durability of every board

• Unrivaled rot and moisture resistance with exceptional stability • Excellent insulation properties to keep the heat in • Intuitively engineered for DIY installations. Thermory – a world leader in sauna wood manufacturing – uses responsibly sourced spruce for their thermally treated panels found in these saunas. The process begins with checking each board to detect internal flaws. All premium materials are then heated at high temperatures in special heating chambers – thermokilns – and infused with steam to ensure their durability for the outdoor barrel saunas. Once naturally, thermally modified, Nordic spruce takes on a distinctive rustic and defined look that complements any outdoor space. The thermally modified boards can withstand a range of temperatures and climates with greater longevity when compared to traditionally treated, or untreated wood. S11 – A World Of Warmth, Light, Colours And Sound With the vision of making sauna bathing as sustainably healthy and effectively relaxing as possible, KLAFS continues to develop the sauna further. For the S11 sauna, KLAFS has teamed up with the renowned Studio F. A. Porsche for the first time and designed a completely new sauna experience. The result is a modern solution that underlines the innovative strength and visionary nature of the manufacturer. In order to live up to this claim and turn ideas into reality, KLAFS, together with Studio F. A. Porsche, has devoted itself intensively to the form and function of saunas and questioned everything known up to now. The result is a sophisticated and completely new type of sauna cabin that takes the bather on a sensory journey between warmth, light, colour and sound. These natural stimuli, which stimulate the body in finely dosed positive ways, combine in the S11 sauna to create a holistic, soothing and perhaps even magical experience. Carefully dimensioned and precisely angled horizontal wooden slats run along three sides of the S11 sauna. Behind them is a wall made of traditional Japanese Washi paper. The translucent

A frameless glass front lends the room additional spaciousness and elegance. The rounded elements, the flowing transitions between the benches and the walls, and the hidden technology offer a purist aesthetic appeal. Ezarri Features In The Snow At Tyrol-based Austrian Hotel Ezarri has recently lined the indoor pool at Hotel Seehof, located in Austria’s spectacular Tyrol region. While open in both summer and winter, Hotel Seehof is a favourite resort among winter holidaymakers, offering guests the perfect indoor water facilities to relax and unwind after a day of skiing – which is why the swimming pool is so important. The beautifully tiled indoor pool area is open all day long, allowing guests to soak to their heart’s content or relax in the sauna. Perfect installation of the mosaic pool tiles was key to the project´s success. Irregular shapes, curves and joints made installation particularly complicated. The pool had to be completely revamped, removing the old worn-out tiles and replacing them with new Ezarri indoor pool mosaic tiles. The result was spectacular. The technologically advanced JointPoint system was essential for this project. Developed exclusively by Ezarri, JointPoint guarantees consistent, high-performance mosaic

tile installation. As for colour, for this project a special combination of tiles was selected with the help of Ezarri’s Mix Generator – a tool that lets users design their own blend of tiles, playing with colours and infinite combinations. The combination of mosaic tiles used at Hotel Seehof were 2523-B (33%), 2560-A (47%) and 2522-B (20%), all three from the Niebla Collection. These shimmering, misty-coloured pool tiles are ideal for interior cladding, swimming pools, spas, saunas, and other indoor areas. WORLD NEWS

New Australian Aquatic Centre Opens Ahead Of Swimming Season The new Parramatta Aquatic Centre located at Mays Hill, Australia has opened. The Centre is in Parramatta Park, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The pool reinvents the traditional aquatic centre typology, creating a new place where the quality of outdoor landscape and recreational space defines the experience. This is a new, inclusive community hub centred around the pleasure of swimming in a park setting. The centre features a 50 metre, 10-lane outdoor pool with seating; a 25 metre indoor recreational pool; an indoor learner pool; an indoor water playground; multipurpose community rooms; steam, spa and sauna facilities; a health and wellness centre, including a modern gym and program rooms; a cafe; and car parking. All of the facilities are predominantly organised into a single level for ease of access and use by

Parramatta’s growing and diverse community. The centre features 360 rooftop solar panels powering a 193kW capacity solar system. Automated natural ventilation is used in the fitness centre instead of air conditioning to maximise energy saving. Skylights that filter harmful UV, maintain temperature, and absorb sounds, are set around the centre to provide soft natural light to indoor areas. Architect firm Grimshaw lead the design partnership with Andrew Burges Architects and McGregor Coxall as landscape architect. The design team’s submission was selected as the winning scheme from a Design Excellence Competition in 2018, at which time the jury commended the response to exceptional operational aspects, the generosity of space contributing to the user experience and the integration of the scheme into the park.

the River Pools brand, and has integrated both it, and key River Pools personnel into its operations. The acquisition brought together the strengths and expertise of both companies, creating new opportunities for education, innovation, and market expansion. River Pools brought unsurpassed consumer reach capability through its success in the SEO world, and a wealth of installation and industry knowledge that has been successfully integrated into Thursday’s culture and manufacturing operations to maximise the potential for mutual success of the both the Thursday Pools and River Pools brands. “This expansion and the successful integration of these two brands are major milestones for Thursday,” said Bill Khamis, founder and CFO at Thursday Pools. “The addition of River Pools enabled and demanded an investment in our manufacturing facility. With these steps forward, we are reinforcing our position as a market leader and positioning ourselves for even greater success in the future.”

A Round Up Of A Year Of Highs And Lows In this final issue of 2023, a year which has featured many highs and unfortunately some lows too, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes provides an update on some recent initiatives, plus thanks the various individuals who have contributed to the work of the associations during the last 12 months

W

hat an action-packed year it has been for our industry. Full of highs, such as SPATEX 2023 and working with the Home Office to better understand the new Explosive Precursors and Poisons Regulations 2023 (that came into force on 1 October this year). The lows include the turmoil caused by one or two poorly run, potentially unscrupulous companies that do not want to look after their customers. They may often liquidate their companies and start over again to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. All contractors must diligently check out the subcontractors they are considering working with. You may not consider it your fault, but you are legally responsible for their actions (if they are under your contract), so choose your supply chain wisely! In news at home, following the recent adoption of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy by the BSPF, the Task Group continue their vital work to ensure that more and more businesses show how they are contributing to this important work to harness the talents of their workforce and to show their relevance to the consumers that they contract with. If this subject is something that you wish to contribute to, then please get in touch with the team in the Andover office on 01264 356210 (or 211). Following the rollout of Quest Services, there are now a large number of documents covering HR, H & S, legal and financial topics available to BISHTA and SPATA members. This is another example of why

BISHTA and SPATA membership is a ‘musthave’ for companies in the industry. The British Pool and Hot Tub Awards is being judged this month. The winners will be announced at the Industry Gala Evening held during SPATEX at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday 6 February 2024. Please remember that attendance at the event is open to the whole industry, so book your tickets now (please see the advert following this page). SPATEX 2024 looks very exciting, so hopefully, you will visit the Coventry Building Society Arena from Tuesday 6, to Thursday 8 February 2024. (see pages 34 and 35 for more on the show). In news from overseas, Cologne was the venue for the 11th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards at aquanale, and congratulations to XL Pools on their Bronze award in the ‘Pools With An Enclosure’ category. Congratulations to everyone who won an award; please see the winners revealed later in this issue starting from page 58. Cologne was also the venue for the 7th WAPSA meeting, and there was a great deal of learning and sharing of ideas, especially relating to market information, education and environmental matters. With 15 national associations coming together in Cologne (or online), there is an opportunity to help provide greater benefits to the members worldwide. Lastly, on to some thank yous. Having achieved the milestone of 15 years working in this great industry earlier this year, it continues to be my privilege to serve the members, partners and the wider industry. I am lucky to be part of a great team, so at this time of year, it is important to express my

thanks to the dedicated people who support our members and exhibitors / visitors: Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Claire Maguire, Debbie Thornton and Jenna Patterson. All these talented people play a vital part in the Andover office to benefit the BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. As always, SPATEX benefits from the outstanding expertise of Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer (and Thay Castro, who recently left to pursue a career in teaching). It is also important to thank the President / Chairs of the various companies: Pete Grinnall (BSPF), Ben Studdy (SPATA), Dorian Davies (BISHTA), Dyfed Thompson-Smith (PIP), Howard Gosling (SPATEX) and Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary (for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP). I am sure they would all want to echo my thanks to the rest of their fellow Directors and other colleagues of the respective Boards, Committees and Councils, including the SPATA and BISHTA technical committees overseen by the respective chairs, Peter Lang and Howard Gosling. SPATA is also very fortunate to have Peter Lang and Ian Betts undertaking inspections (with Steve Conway, Alan Jackson and Nigel Fallow also trained) to help support members; my thanks to you all. On behalf of everyone connected with the BSPF, we wish you season’s greetings, and please note that our office will be closed from lunchtime on Friday 22 December 2023, and it will reopen on Tuesday 2 January 2024. I look forward to seeing you at the Coventry Building Society Arena for SPATEX 2024!

Trade Association Training And Webinars In this latest issue, we highlight how trade associations, and in particular SPATA and BISHTA, are raising standards through industry qualifications and the sharing of essential sector specific information to support employees’

S

PATA and BISHTA help bring together industry training opportunities to support those people working in the pool and hot tub sectors to stay up-todate with current knowledge and the latest topics that affect the industry. This is achieved with well-chosen industry-specific courses and webinars presented by experts and specialist partners to keep trade association members ahead of the competition and serve their customers with the industry’s highest standards. A well-trained and experienced workforce is a crucial part of any good company and there are various workforce development opportunities for companies operating in the pool and hot tub sectors. Trade association training courses and certifications offer a range of benefits to individuals and businesses within the industry. These benefits can include: • Skill Development: Trade association training courses provide specialised knowledge directly relevant to the industry or profession. This can help individuals enhance their expertise and stay up-to-date with industry trends. • Credibility: Certification from your industry trade association can enhance your credibility and reputation. It serves as a validation of your business and workforce, skills and knowledge. • Competitive Advantage: Having trade association certified staff can set your business apart from the competition. • Professional Development: Continuing education and training are essential for career advancement. Trade association certifications can help professionals remain competitive in their fields and meet the industry’s evolving demands. • Best Practice: Trade associations emphasise industry best practices, which can help individuals and businesses improve their operations, increase efficiency, and reduce risks. • Knowledge Transfer: Trade association training courses involve experienced instructors who can share practical knowledge and insights gained from years of

working in the industry. • Customer Trust: Businesses that display their certifications can build trust with customers who prefer to work with companies that employ certificated professionals. • Marketability: Businesses can use their employees’ certifications as a selling point, potentially attracting more clients and customers. • Global Recognition: SPATA and BISHTA have an international presence, making their certifications recognised and respected in many countries, which can be valuable for individuals and businesses operating globally.

SPATA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Training: There are also generic courses, either provided directly by SPATA or that may be available from other parties. Many of these courses will need regular (every three – five years) refresher training to ensure knowledge is updated. The following courses are run throughout the year on various dates published on the SPATA website: • Environmental Control and Ductwork • Heat Pumps • Liners • Sauna and Steam • Pool Plant Operators (PPO) • Dangerous Goods • Water Hygiene Management. Webinars: SPATA offers its members webinars on various topics throughout the year, as well as the annual Information & Networking Day, which this year has included: • Stretch ceiling membranes by Easy Ceiling • Business Insurance (Poolsure) by Nsure • Control of Explosive Precursors and Poisons Regulations by the Home Office • Selling Chemicals Responsibly by the Home Office. The training set by SPATA and the Standards and Supplements are arguably the best in the world. But, to uphold these Standards, SPATA is continually reviewing and developing

suitable nationally recognised courses and qualifications. SPATA sets education as one of its fundamental routes in raising standards across the industry.

BISHTA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Training: As BISHTA’s logo strapline highlights, the association’s principal focus is to ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’, providing consumers with a clear route to buy with confidence from BISHTA members. To ensure workforce development, various courses are made available by BISHTA, its partners and trainers, with some courses at a discounted price for BISHTA members. Many courses in the industry require regular (three – five years) refresher training to ensure staff knowledge is updated. The following courses are run throughout the year on various dates published on the BISHTA website: • Water Hygiene Management • Hot Tub Site Surveyor • Dangerous Goods • Electrical Final Connections qualification • Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) • Hot Tub Safe Manual Handling Course. Webinars: BISHTA offers its members webinars on various topics throughout the year, as well as the annual Information & Networking Day, which this year has included: • Business Insurance (Spasure) by Nsure • Control of Explosive Precursors and Poisons Regulations by the Home Office • Selling Chemicals Responsibly by the Home Office • Trading Standards’ advice by Buckingham and Surrey Trading Standards. SPATEX is also a valuable resource for the industry, with over 40 workshops and seminars and CPD points available on all sessions hosted by ISPE, PWTAG and STA, hosted across the three days of SPATEX (6 – 8 February 2024). Come along and meet the SPATA and BISHTA team on stand A1 at SPATEX, and you can all find lots more information on the Trade area of the websites. STA POOL PLANT – NEW YEAR, NEW POOL

New Year, New Pool – Turning Resolutions Into Reality Luke Griffiths, STA’s Technical Qualifications and Business Development Manager highlights some considerations, technical requirements and benefits of owning a swim school pool.

A

s the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, millions of people around the world make resolutions for the year ahead. These resolutions often revolve around health, fitness and personal growth. How about all three? It may be ambitious but, in this article, we will explore how to turn your New Year’s resolutions into reality. STA and SPATA have worked closely over the past decade to inform STA members of the technical requirements and the benefits of owning their own swimming pool venue. We have done this through various workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as developing factsheets such as the M99 Pools for Swim Schools Factsheet. Several STA swim schools have taken the plunge. But although, the interest is always there, for most it remains a pipedream due to three common but significant barriers: • Business planning • Access to funding • Suitable land, premises and design.

BUSINESS PLANNING Setting up a new swim school and pool business requires meticulous business planning to ensure its success. The foundation of a successful swim school begins with a well thought out business plan. Start by conducting thorough market research to understand the demand for swimming lessons in your area, identify your target audience, and assess the competition. To start the process there are many free business plan templates available online. But to be taken seriously by lenders you are advised to work with an accountant or business planner to produce accurate cash flow forecasts, profit & loss and balance sheets. Professional financial and technical advice cannot be underestimated. The business plan must be accurate and not speculative with all financial aspects in place. Financial planning is vital. Calculate the

startup costs, including pool construction or renovation, maintenance, staffing, equipment, insurance and other expenses. Create a detailed budget and revenue projections for the first few years to ensure you can cover your costs and eventually make a profit. Operational planning is another critical aspect. Define your swimming programme and safety procedures. Hiring and training qualified staff is essential to provide highquality lessons and facilities. STA has a range of aquatic qualifications to service the needs of the swim school, from swimming teacher, lifeguard, first-aid, to pool plant operator qualifications. Developing a marketing strategy to promote your swim school is also important and this may include online advertising, having a social media presence and creating partnerships with local schools or community organisations. Additionally, legal and regulatory considerations must not be overlooked. Ensure compliance with safety regulations. As an independent swim school, you might also want to consider becoming a STA Swim Star Swim School; the programme recognises your commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, business procedures, teaching and customer service. Finally, monitor and adjust your business plan regularly as your swim school grows, adapting to changing market conditions and customer feedback to achieve long-term success.

ACCESS TO FUNDING Access to funding for building or renovating a swim school pool is a crucial factor in realising the dream of owning and operating your own swim school pool. Securing the necessary financial resources often involves a multifaceted approach. Swim schools can explore options such as investing their own capital, government grants, private investors, plus partnerships with local community organisations or with pool installers. Additionally, banks and building societies may offer commercial mortgages, loans or lines of credit specifically tailored for projects like pool construction which offer social value. Demonstrating the educational and community benefits of the swim school, along with a well-structured business plan, can enhance the chances of obtaining funding.

Asset finance is another consideration. Instead of paying the full amount up-front when buying or replacing items, asset finance allows you to spread the costs over time. Monthly payments make it easier to manage the costs of large purchases without tying up cash. This is important for when you are considering what type of pool to go for. For example a concrete pool tank would not be eligible for asset finance but a steel framed pool that can be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere could be.

SUITABLE LAND, PREMISES AND DESIGN Location matters; choosing a suitable location for your swim school pool to succeed is essential and a feasibility study must be carried out considering: • Space for the facility • Site constraints • Bearing capacity of ground, soil conditions and depth of water table • Accessibility • Sufficient car parking • Location of existing public services and drainage capacity. When it comes to the location, also think creatively, we have seen several swim schools build pools in industrial units, in shopping centres, in disused pubs, on business parks and even a car park. Invest in quality facilities and equipment too. Pools should be well-maintained and equipped with safety features. You’ll also need teaching aids, changing rooms, and administrative spaces. Good design can maximise customer appeal. Most parents are looking for good parking, good changing rooms and warm water. So, as we welcome the New Year and consider any resolutions, how about the possibility of owning your own swim school and pool. It’s a venture that combines personal passion with professional success, and it allows you to make a meaningful impact on the lives in your community. With careful planning, dedication and commitment, you can turn your New Year’s resolution into a reality. So, here’s to ‘New Year, New Pool’, and the exciting journey of swim school ownership ahead! COMPANY FOCUS Certikin’s new 125,000 sq. ft warehouse and office development which they moved to in 2021

Certikin: A Diamond Of A Company! With a Diamond Anniversary celebrated this year, in this latest issue, we shine the spotlight on Witney-based manufacturer and distributor Certikin – a brand which anybody within the UK wet leisure industry will be familiar with – and a company which has big plans for the future!

H

aving proudly celebrated its Diamond anniversary this year, Certikin has spent much of the past 60 years forging its path as an industry innovator, manufacturer, and distributor, to establish and secure its position as a market leader within the UK’s water leisure sector. Pausing, momentarily for reflection, this is a company eager for further expansion and one that is looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead. Premier status in any industry invariably involves a hard-fought battle, and it would be trite to claim otherwise in this case. Completing its 60th anniversary, Certikin can, however, be justly proud of the obstacles and road bumps it has successfully traversed. Strength and endurance, coupled with an ability to innovate and adapt to changing market forces, are qualities that Certikin has worked hard over the decades to harness, in order to achieve its premier status. The company has travelled a long road since its inception in 1963 when its founder – Brian Stannah (of Stannah stair lift fame) – set up a company called Certikin in the very unassuming surroundings of an East

HQ FOR THE FUTURE

Grinstead basement. Now, in 2023, not only is Certikin the UK’s premier supplier for the whole industry, it is also a major manufacturer, in its own right, of a wide range of wet leisure products, including underwater lights, heaters, liners, wooden pools, skimmers and other fittings, pool and spa covers, HDPE products, water circulation pumps and maintenance equipment. The Certikin brand appears in swimming pools and spas around the globe, with the name being synonymous with premium quality.

We treasure and celebrate our heritage, but standing, as we do, at the forefront of innovation and development, our focus is on the future” 38 December 2023 SPN 38-39_SPN_December_2023_Certikin.indd 38

Today, Certikin has a workforce of more than 140 people, working out of a new 125,000 sq. ft warehouse and office development, which the company moved to some 24 months ago, alongside its state-of-theart manufacturing plant in Leeds. After 31 years at its old premises in central Witney in Oxfordshire, more space was required for the burgeoning business but, keen to retain its experienced, loyal workforce, the new site was found just two miles down the road. The impressive warehouse houses 9,500 product lines for both domestic and commercial pools for new build and retrofit markets, a plethora of wellness equipment (including spas, saunas and steam products), plus goods for the aquatic market. It comes with the added bonus of offering plenty of room for future expansion too!

LEADING FROM THE FRONT Overseeing the next phase of development that the new premises have brought is Neil Stephenson, who was appointed Managing Director following Neil Murray’s retirement last summer after an 18-year tenure. Clocking up over 24 years of company experience, including as Product Development Manager and General Manager of Certikin North, Neil has brought gravitas and his extensive knowledge to the role. “The new premises have vastly improved

and simplified our everyday operation to meet the needs of our growing business,” says Neil. “They have allowed us to greatly enhance our customer service. We can store, handle and dispatch more products more efficiently; our production spaces are less congested; we now boast attractive seminar rooms and host regular training sessions – the benefits are endless. And, as expected, the new premises have also had a really cohesive and positive impact within the team. Indeed, we are in the best shape possible to have celebrated this milestone year.”

DIAMOND QUALITY PRODUCTS It is the quality and breadth of the product range that sets Certikin apart from its competitors and much of that comes from fostering a network of solid relationships with manufacturers and suppliers from around the world. Partnerships with some of the best-known companies and brands in the industry go back decades. Take for instance, Maytronics. Certikin has been the UK distributor for their Dolphin robotic pool cleaners since 1989. Another long-standing partnership is that sealed in 1978 with Calorex (now Dantherm) which brought about the creation of a specialist division, within Certikin, for swimming pool heat pumps and dehumidifiers. To this day, Certikin has a

specialist H&V technical support team who guide specifiers and installers through every aspect of an installation, including air source heat pumps and indoor pool environmental control units. The list of long-term collaborations is almost unlimited – many other leading product brands and key suppliers such as Coverstar, Roldeck, Fluvo, Waterco, Elecro, Endless Pool, Emec and Harvia, to name just a handful, also make up the portfolio. And the list continues to grow with fruitful relationships equally expected from newer

partners such as Dryden Aqua, Wellis and Polypool. Reflecting on Certikin’s 60 year journey, Neil says: “Certikin bears testament to the fact that from acorns, oak trees grow. It’s the people that make a business and I would like to thank all our loyal customers who have stood by us. Not forgetting, of course, the backbone of the company, our dedicated and conscientious workforce, many of whom have themselves clocked up a few long-serving accolades! “As a company we hold a privileged and responsible position in the marketplace but we don’t for one second take it for granted. We treasure and celebrate our heritage, but standing, as we do, at the forefront of innovation and development, our focus is on the future. We recognise the continual demand to source and develop new premium quality products and provide the best possible customer service. It is our dedication and commitment to the industry we serve that will continue to define us and set us apart and we are constantly working on improving and developing the core business strengths which support this in order to ensure we continue along our journey for the next 60 years!” Certikin 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

Belgian Manufacturers Host British Partners When it comes to pool and spa products, Belgium appears to punch well above its weight in certain sectors, with the production of both swimming pools and their covers being prime examples. Brands including Covrex, LPW Pools and T&A are all located just a short drive from each other and SPN, along with several UK pool companies were invited by Fairlocks Pool Products to the north west of the country to take a closer look at the facilities of each By Jon Wadeson

B

elgium is a relatively small country and it would seem that the business world in the Benelux country is even smaller! That’s because there’s a link between these three brands and also Fairlocks Pool Products which I’ll briefly try to summarise. Oxfordshire-based Fairlocks Pool Products have been working on an exclusive basis with the slatted cover brand Covrex since 2010, and it’s been a relationship that has worked well for both parties with Fairlocks supplying covers across the UK and becoming one of Covrex’s most valuable business partners. At the time, Covrex’s Guillaume de Troostembergh was also involved with the one-piece swimming pool brand LPW Pools, and these companies soon became divisions within a newly formed group called TSPH (The Swimming Pool Hub). Therefore, supplying

T&A’s Bjorn Jagt hosted the group on the day and gave a technical presentation on the company’s wide range of products

LPW Pools to the British market was an obvious and logical step. Sure enough, in 2017, the Belgian pool brand hit the UK via Fairlocks Pool Products and it’s been another successful partnership for both companies. So where does cover manufacturer T&A fit in? Well, as an already established major player in the sector, last year, the company announced the acquisition of Covrex along with French cover manufacturing brand Walter Piscine who were also part of TSPH. These acquisitions, along with the previous purchase of AquaCover, another Belgium cover manufacturer, plus moving pool floor company Morgana Floor have meant that T&A has established a leading position in the swimming pool cover market. With the background done, on to the visit. SPN, along with teams from a number of UK pool builders arrived at the Belgium town of

Geel in the north west of the country on a Monday evening. With a full itinerary planned for the following day, following a meal hosted by the team at Fairlocks Pool Products and staff from LPW, which gave the attendees a chance to get to know each other, it was lights out. The following morning, the group travelled by minibus to the T&A headquarters on the outskirts of Geel. Upon arriving, one of the company’s new products could instantly be seen on show – the moving pool floor from Morgana Floor – and Area Sales Manager Bjorn Jagt, who hosted the group on the day, demonstrated the system and explained the product’s features and benefits. This was followed by a full tour of the impressive facilities along with a technical presentation about T&A’s wide range of high-quality cover products.

Automation Manager Raf Olaerts talked through some of the control systems being developed for the cover systems

The directlyowned stainless steel plant in Aarschot gives T&A much greater production flexibility

All T&A underwater covers (Covrex, AquaCover and T&A) are made in-house from 316 stainless steel

Although photos are not allowed within the production area, attendees were able to view some of the modern, high-end machinery used during the manufacturing processes including for the cutting of slats and also for the unique way of ultrasonically welding the end caps to certain slats. During the tour, the scale of T&A’s operation became apparent too, with the sheer volume of slats, drive systems and components held in the warehouse making a lasting impression on the attendees. With such a high level of items in stock, covering the smallest to the largest of projects, lead times are minimised and customers are kept happy. With a moving floor, slatted covers, fabric safety covers, winter covers and even moveable deck systems, the impressive T&A product range has every type of cover product imaginable across a range of price points. Following a break for lunch, it was back on to the minibus and off to the nearby town of Aarschot, the home of LPW Pools (TSPH) and where Covrex have two ancillary facilities located close to each other. First up the group took a flying visit to Covrex South where Automation Manager Raf Olaerts talked through some of the control systems being developed for the cover systems and the improvements being implemented to enhance functionality. From there, it was a short trip on to the Covrex stainless steel plant, and as with the T&A factory, there was plenty of stock on-hand as we were greeted with drive systems for dozens of covers. One of the big benefits for T&A of the Covrex purchase was the pooling of production tools, and this was a great example of that. All T&A

underwater covers (Covrex, AquaCover and T&A) are made of 316 stainless steel and this directly-owned plant gives them much greater production flexibility, improved development capabilities and greatly reduced lead times. Once inside the factory, attendees could see the high-end equipment, including impressive, automated laser cutting tools which are used to produce the drive systems and any additional components. Having spoken with Ladis Kantar, who manages the facility with his wife Marika, there are clearly big plans in place going forward. With this part of the tour concluded, it was then onwards to the last destination – the home of LPW Pools. Outside the impressive new building, which was built following a major fire several years ago, are a number of working swimming pools provide a useful demonstration area, allowing the company to showcase both its pools and also cover systems from T&A and Covrex. The group was greeted by LPW Managing Director Antoon Boeykens and following a tour around the

admin facilities, it was on to the sizeable factory area where the one-piece, vinyl ester, resin shells of each LPW pool is fitted out with all the necessary components. Outside the building, where the pool shells are stored, lay several hundred pools, all waiting patiently for new owners. An impressive site if ever there was one. Clearly, as with T&A, it’s fair to say supply issues appear not to be a concern here! Back inside, and within a newer factory setting, the group were able to take a close-up look at the latest addition to the TSPH family - ‘flexline’ polypropylene swimming pools, which are completely custom-made according to each customer’s preferences. The bespoke nature of these pools mean that any length, width or depth can be accommodated and this range nicely complements the ‘off the shelf’ options from the LPW Pools brand. Having spoken with Paul Webb from Fairlocks Pool Products, he confirmed that ‘flexline’ will be an available option for the UK market from next year. With each of the factory tours done, it was back to Geel for a second evening meal, this time with members of the Covrex team. Meeting great people, eating great food and seeing great products and the manufacturing behind them… it was an ideal trip for those that were able to make it, and all the more impressive as it was the first time Fairlocks Pool Products had arranged factory visits for their clients and something which the company have advised that they will certainly be doing again next year. SWIM SPAS – ENTRY LEVEL

Exercise, Relax Or Party With Value For Money Swim Spas For customers that want to both relax and occasionally exercise in water, entrylevel swim spas ticks each box. Increasingly chosen as a replacement for a traditional small pool, these counter-current equipped products are often referred to as party spas and are aimed at budget conscious families rather than full-on athletes in need of a training aid for a serious workout. With retail prices around the £20,000 mark, we take a look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson

A

s a product offering the combined benefits of both a small swimming pool and a hot tub or spa in a single, relatively affordable and straightforward to own and maintain package, it’s not surprising that entry-level swim spas have fared well in the UK, since their introduction. For families who want to provide some water based fun and entertainment but without splashing out too much, there’s clearly a lot to like. The versatility of the products found at the lower end of the swim spa price range mean that owners have an area where the kids can let off some steam, and at other times, there’s also the option of a dedicated pool for some gentle exercising. When the kids aren’t around, there’s a further option of a calming space in which to relax and sooth away any aches and pains. As an introduction to counter-current swimming, entry-level options provide a package which has always represented nothing short of outstanding value for money – something which adds to their allure in these price conscious times – and this, combined with their multi-use ability has ensured their continued popularity. With a number of manufacturers providing budget-friendly swim spa options, we take a closer look at some of the available models.

ACTIVEPLUS EP-12 – THE STARTING POINT OF THE TIDALFIT RANGE Artesian Spas released its first TidalFit swim

spa model, the EP-14, back in 2008. Since then, they have introduced a wide range of quality models to suit all swim spa needs and budgets – all built to the same worldclass standards in quality that the brand is famous for. Sitting as the entry-level option in an eight model range, the ActivePlus EP-12 is the perfect size swim spa to fit in smaller spaces. Available as above-ground or semi in-ground, and with Dual Swim Jets as standard plus an option to upgrade to TidalFit’s popular Quad Swim Jets to take aqua training to the next level, this model is perfect for intermediate and beginner swimmers. Artesian Spas are famous for producing the ultimate in hydro-massage technology and the optional hydrotherapy systems found on the TidalFits are no different. Available on most models, these systems provide numerous Helix™ jets with their very own hydrotherapy pump, driving deep into the muscle tissue for a truly remarkable hydro-massage. This option is the perfect addition to relax muscles and unwind following a workout session. Each TidalFit swim spa comes as standard with a high efficiency 24 hour Whisperpure™ circulation system, an exclusive smart energy insulation where the space between the maintenance-free cabinet and the structure is filled with highly insulating Icynene™ brand foam, plus a heavy-duty thermal spa cover which works to ensure the best rate of heat retention available.

The ActivePlus EP-12 is also available with a wide range of optional extras, meaning each can be customised to suit individual needs and goals. Upgrade the water care system to Diamond AOP, brighten up the garden space with Dynabrite lighting, add a BBA fully integrated sound system or add resistant swim tethers, cords or rowing bars.

PEDIGREE SHINES THROUGH ON SUNBEACH’S SWIM SPA RANGE Whether it’s a dedicated swim spa, or a combined swim and hot tub unit, fun, fitness and relaxation are within reach of more people than ever before. To meet the rise in demand, the water leisure industry has expanded enormously, bringing newer and more innovative models to market and East Midlands-based Sunbeach Spas is flying ahead in that regard. The company’s wide swim spa range consisting of Sunbeach but mainly Oasis Spas models, features dedicated swimming and combined units, each of which sets themselves ahead of the crowd with three key features. Firstly, power. With up to four turbo jets that are unlike any others on the market, Sunbeach’s swim spas create a smooth, straight stream of counter-current with up to 2,000+ gallons per minute of flow, free of both turbulence and air bubbles to give a sublime swimming experience, no matter what the ability level of the user might be.

Sunbeach’s 6-seater OD-39 swim spa model shares the same pedigree of design and construction as the company’s Oasis Spas range

Passion Spas’ Activity 1 Deep is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds

With power, also comes control. Unlike swim spas with limited, physical control valves, the included inverter system allows for full electronic control of the jet speed ensuring that users will always be able to find a comfortable swim speed, no matter what their ability level. Finally, build. These share the same pedigree of design and construction as the company’s Oasis Spas range, including the full-foam, multi-density insulation system for superlative heat retention and energy saving. One popular choice has been Sunbeach’s OD-39 model. This 6-seater fully-featured budget swim spa is produced with a Silver White Marble Aristech acrylic shell and features the latest Gecko touch screen control panel, Gecko in.stream 2 audio system, plus Ozonator and double filtration system for ease of maintenance. Whether it’s relaxing after a hard day, splashing around with the kids or setting a new personal best, with options for every budget, Sunbeach Spas’ Ultimate Swim Experience has all the options covered.

On one side there is all the comfort, pleasure and therapy benefits of a traditional spa or hot tub which is provided by 50 massage jets, whilst on the other side, the swim function is equipped with Passion Spas’ unique River Swim System™ and Current-lift Technology™. The River Swim system consists of two floor jets and five large swim jets, placed in a row to create a steady flow of water over the entire width of the swim spa. Users can control the intensity of the water stream and when doing so, the flow is equally divided over the whole width of the current. Because of this unique technique, the water stream covers a wide area and is effectively positioned below the water surface, enabling users to swim with their head comfortably above water. If the intensity of the River Swim System is decreased, the Current-Lift Technology is automatically activated, enabling the swimmer to remain in the prone position.

PASSION’S ACTIVITY MODELS – FOUR UNIQUE AND VALUE FOR MONEY MODELS

Wellis have had great success with their swim spa range which has been enhanced regularly

For the last three decades, Netherlandsbased Passion Spas has been engineering and manufacturing numerous spa and hot tub models and the company has perhaps one of the widest ranges of swim spas on the market. All of the company’s models represent great value for money so it’s no surprise that their entry-level products have always been popular and they have been keen always to offer new models that keep up with the latest technology and trends. One of the company’s newest series of swim spas is the Activity, and the range offers models with two different lengths and two depths, providing flexibility at a key price point. Whether the Activity 1, 1 Deep, 2 or 2 Deep is chosen, each model is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds.

over recent years and their current entrylevel model – the Danube – has benefitted greatly from both design and technology improvements. The base model is powered by an impressive W-Flow System where users can choose between six-speed levels from the slowest, most comfortable ‘floating’ setting, right up to the hardest exercise workout. Similar to a modern treadmill, users can predefine the swimming speeds one after another, so slower stages can be inserted between swimming sprints and custom workouts can be created. The width of the water flow within the W-Flow is only 50-60cm and the flow rate can be adjusted between 0.4-2.5 km/h. Inside the latest model, the appearance has been simplified, lines are much cleaner and more modern looking, plus the space has been optimised. Wellis have now included two massage seats which are located either side of the water flow system, meaning owners can use the Danube for professional swimming and to enjoy a relaxing massage too. Rear filter housings have also been placed at the end of the swimming area so that the active water area is more than 50cm wider than before. As with all three models in the Wellis swim spa range, a more expensive Turbine option is also available and both these Danube variants feature UV-C water sanitisers, LED lighting, Thermo cover and Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity plus an AquaSoul 4.1 sound system as standard, meaning owning, entertaining within or working out in either Danube is sure to be a lot easier and a lot more fun too.

SAFETY COVERS

Covering Up Directly For The Ultimate In Safety With accidents an ever-present concern, pool and spa safety will always be the highest of priorities. Monitoring devices, fences, enclosures, numerous slatted cover systems… all will increase peace of mind, but safety covers have been designed with a more straightforward brief – to prevent unsupervised access to pools and spas and support the weight of any humans or animals that stray onto them. This issue, we focus solely on this type of cover By Jon Wadeson

S

afety measures for the UK’s swimming pools and spas are always top of agenda for both industry and owners alike, and concerns surrounding drowning are at the forefront of the discussion. After all, bodies of water by their very nature, are a potential hazard which if not taken seriously, can lead to serious injuries or unfortunately much worse. Just one drowning death is one too many, especially given that there are a wide range of products available to avoid these sad scenarios, and many of them focus on restricting direct access to the source of the danger. Wet leisure installations secured by a building, enclosure, fence, raised moving floor or slatted pool cover can often eliminate the risks of unauthorised entry, but there are occasions when they either aren’t used or can’t be installed. Thankfully, when it comes to providing security directly, there’s a whole sector of products that focus on answering the question of unauthorised access and in doing so, also provide that all important peace of mind too, as can be seen from this latest collection of safety cover solutions.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND POOL WITH PLASTICA’S POOLSAVER In 2022, over 300 people drowned accidentally in the UK and Ireland and many more will have suffered injury, some life-

changing, through non-fatal experiences. With over 50 years of experience in the pool trade, Plastica know only too well the importance of safety around water, especially swimming pools. The Poolsaver™ Manual Safety Cover has been designed by Plastica to offer a tough construction to cover a swimming pool and keep children or animals from entering it when it isn’t in use. This high-quality, low priced manual safety cover ensures it will safely support up to 100kg as per the latest French safety laws. It’s fitted with highquality stainless steel ratchet straps to help achieve almost effortless tension of the Poolsaver™ across the pool. Available in five colours – grey, blue, pastel green, green and beige – owners can choose the colour that best suits their swimming pool and its surroundings. Also available is the easy to install Poolsaver™ Cover for above-ground wooden pools, which gives peace of mind to owners of these smaller options. The UV stabilised PVC cover is securely fitted to anodised aluminium tubes which hold the cover in place. Stainless steel ratchets firmly hold the cover in position, making it secure with a flush fit that attaches to brass anchor points. This extremely adaptable cover is a great solution, adding both safety and cleanliness to the pool. The underside of the cover on both

Poolsaver™ models has a beige non-marking surface and extra wear strips to prolong the life of the system.

DRIPOOL PROVIDING 35 YEARS OF POOL SAFETY Dripool have been at the forefront of pool safety for over 35 years and remain the UK’s only designers and manufacturers of automatic safety covers, for all types of swimming pool. One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements. The patented winding extrusion and tensioned leading edge ‘super Cam’ ensures that no front beam is required, making the Driglide the only automatic swimming pool cover that completely disappears from the pool when uncovered. The AutoSafe is the latest addition to Dripool’s range of products and is an under coping system that is predominantly designed to ensure safety, debris control and heat retention on new build, rectangular pools.

SAFETY COVERS

Lighthouse’s patented CoverSeal cover comprises a unique mechanism that allows the fabric to be cleanly unrolled onto the pool

Available through Certikin, the Coverstar system – as used on this Falcon Pools project – is based on strength

Whilst the AutoSafe incorporates the same unique winding technology and exacting standards as the company’s Driglide system, it has been cleverly simplified for the more budget conscious customer. Once installed, both of these systems are easily operated via a discreet control panel simply by turning a key and pressing a button.

COVERSTAR – A GOLD STANDARD IN SWIMMING POOL SAFETY Certikin’s Coverstar is a seamlessly integrated cover system that is super-easy to operate and provides maximum safety (complies with French safety standard NFP90-308) without compromising the pool’s appearance. The Coverstar system features unparalleled strength and is ideal for both new builds and retrofitting to an existing pool. Supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults, it uses the exclusive Ultra Guard III vinyl composite, rather than the industry-standard vinyl, popular with other manufacturers. The high level of UV resistance offered by Ultra Guard III considerably reduces the level of colour fading compared to standard vinyl, plus it has high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, instead of using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar uses an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the cover’s life and improving the overall operation. Independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors’ webbing sewn to the cover. The heat-sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create a beautiful finish.

Aquatrac safety covers have been adapted to suit deck level and infinity edge pools along with the growing number of swim spas and fibreglass pools

48 December 2023 SPN 47+48+50SPN_December_2023_Safety_Covers.indd 48

There are a variety of pit toppings to choose from, including composite decking and heavyduty pit trays in which stones can be laid, plus the Coverstar is supplied with a low profile leading edge bar, UK sourced power pack and UK sourced touch button key switch too. For total peace of mind, factory trained engineers are available for the installation of Coverstar covers.

LIGHTHOUSE ADD COVERSEAL SAFETY COVERS TO THEIR RANGE The patented CoverSeal cover comprises a unique mechanism that allows the fabric to be cleanly unrolled onto the pool whilst locking it in place in an extra-flat, extremely discreet, parallel guide rail system. In a change from the norm, the cover housing is driven down the length of the area to be covered, unrolling the high-quality fabric as it goes. This means freeform pools and pools with large surround areas incorporating spas can easily be catered for. With a maximum width of 11m and length of 26m, even the most difficult of open spaces should now be able to be covered and secured. The fabric was developed by the Serge Ferrari brand, a world leader in this market, and offers high UV resistance, extreme climatic conditions performance and exacting standards, including AFNOR NF P90-308. With three styles of unit available, the cover is suited to all sectors of the pool market. The battery solar powered ‘Automatic’ model is the top of the range, combining technology, aesthetics and respect for the environment. Activated by a wired or wireless control unit (in sight of the pool), it provides

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS

Automated Systems To Precisely Control Water Quality And So Much More! Essential, reliable and increasingly high tech, dosing pumps and control systems are the unsung heroes in any pool and spa set up. As they quietly go about the business of ensuring safe conditions for those using the water, many systems also provide much more too, making the management of water facilities a much more straightforward task. The convenience they provide has made the life of owners and operators much simpler and we round up what’s available By Jon Wadeson

S

ystems that expertly control the precise treatment of water are a must in today’s commercial market and are also sought after in ever increasing numbers in the growing and increasingly tech-savvy consumer sector too. So what are the benefits of automatic dosing and control systems? The biggest has to be safety. To have equipment installed that recognises, reacts and then treats frequently changing bather loads and ensures that water users are protected from horrors such as cryptosporidium or giardia is quite frankly priceless. From a water ‘nasties’ point of view, perfectly regulated pool water is the first line of defence in providing a safe and trouble free wet leisure experience for bathers and offers peace of mind to owners. It also ensures swimmers’ skin and eyes are not irritated by spent chlorine or water that has an out of balance pH. Any guesswork is removed from the water treatment process, allowing owners and operators to spend less time testing and guessing, leaving them to pass the responsibility over to the automated marvels that efficiently take control. The automation and management duties of some of these systems can also be extended

beyond just the supervision of water quality and set up, can be responsible for anything from maintenance to lighting, heating to even audio and entertainment systems – all can now be controlled – often remotely on a smartphone, tablet or computer, so that the pool or spa is primed and ready for action well before the user has even unpacked their swimming gear. Today’s automated systems offer more than just precision, they also put a big emphasis on flexibility, reliability and convenience and in doing so, have made it easier than ever to ensure perfect water management and so much more with as little effort and input as possible.

SEKO – A WORLD LEADER IN IOT-ENABLED DOSING SYSTEMS For those with the luxury of having their own swimming pool, it’s a safe bet that they envisaged fun and relaxation rather than work and maintenance when having it installed. However, it’s a fact that maintaining the delicate balance of water-quality values is essential to ensure clean, safe swimming conditions, with the unsung heroes being the dosing pumps and control systems that achieve this. So how do domestic pool owners with limited or no specialist knowledge know that the water is safe while leaving the technical side to the experts? SEKO, manufacturer of world-leading IoTenabled swimming pool chemical dosing systems, has solved the problem by designing two distinct digital tools for users and technicians – SekoLink and SekoWeb. SekoLinks’s unique smartphone app connects pool owners to their swimming pool like never before. It allows end users to remotely access chemical parameters and receive pool health updates as well as start or pause their dosing system. With the ability to immediately identify dosing system defects, even when away from home, users can ensure that issues are rectified quickly before they lead to system failure. This means more time spent bathing and less time spent worrying about pool health. The SekoWeb app and online portal allows pool and spa technicians to set up and adjust waterquality parameters remotely for complete management of multiple installations. Created with engineers in mind, SekoWeb requires expert technical knowledge to navigate, with password protection ensuring only authorised users can access the portal. With live and historical data at their fingertips, engineers can adjust programmes 24/7, making SekoWeb ideal for management of professional installations within health spas, leisure centres and water parks.

SekoWeb allows pool and spa technicians to set up and adjust water-quality parameters remotely for complete management of multiple installations

free chlorine, total chlorine, a derived combined chlorine reading, conductivity and ORP. Traditionally, operators concentrate on monitoring and manually testing their free chlorine and pH levels. However, engaging with other areas of water quality could have a positive impact on energy and water savings. Take Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) as an example. With a CENTURIO POOL owners can have a conductivity probe so that TDS can be continually monitored and displayed alongside free chlorine and pH. The deterioration of water quality against TDS data could allow an operator to implement an operational dilution program at the lowest possible cost. This is just one example of how interacting with water quality data can assist with better managing utility costs. CENTURIO POOL can be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, GSM or ethernet (ethernet module is included with the CENTURIO) and remotely controlled via ERMES, the online

WELLNESS

Relaxation For The Mind, Body And Soul Once an experience to be enjoyed either on a holiday or by visiting a leisure club, spa or hotel, it seems that the temptation to invest in saunas, steam plus other temperature-based wet leisure wellness products – for both commercial and domestic settings – is starting to prove irresistible. Despite still being somewhat niche, it’s a sector that is growing and this issue we focus on a number of options on offer in what is rapidly becoming an increasingly important one By Jon Wadeson

O

verall wellness encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing, so now, more than ever, it’s important to ensure that both sides are provided for and for many, sauna, steam and other temperature-based wellness products such as ice baths are able to assist with that support. Regardless of the type of wellness product customers are looking to invest in, it’s no surprise that interest continues to grow in these products, especially as more styles, options and materials become available. With advances in technology enabling smaller and more compact units to be developed, wellness is being made available to everyone, including those with a little less space. In addition, a lot of these products are wonderfully flexible and can be tailored, personalised and installed to achieve the perfection that today’s customers demand. As the wellness and healthy living sectors continue to grow in importance, so too does the demand for these solutions. Whether the requirement is for a single unit or a suite of wellness products, the variety and selection of units available means that pretty much every taste and every budget can be accommodated and this thriving side of the wet leisure industry will continue to enjoy success in both homes and commercial settings.

BRITISH MADE STEAM GENERATION FROM HUMIDITY SOLUTIONS Humidity Solutions offer different products that can provide both humidification, and if required, dehumidification for any customer’s spa and sauna. Their primary product for creating humidification for a wellness environment are the Vapac VS steam generator units, which are available in three sizes. These units are easy to install and can provide a steam room or spa with up to 30kg/hr of steam. Each is controlled by a built in temperature sensor and controller within the unit that comes pre-configured for ultimate ease of use when installing the unit. Not only are these units easy to install, they are simple and inexpensive to maintain as a result of their readily available disposable steam cylinder which can be specified for the specific water quality at any site to prolong the lifespan of the unit. Humidity Solutions keep a large stock of these units and their spares so they cannot be beaten on lead times. Following any order, they can get a unit or spare parts to customers within two days. KUUSI AND KASKI – BARREL SAUNA OPTIONS FROM SCP UK At the start of 2023, SCP UK added two new barrel sauna options from the Garden Leisure brand to their already extensive heat therapy line up. ‘Kuusi’ means spruce in Finnish and refers to the type of wood from which one of the new sauna barrels is made. Available in three different sizes, the Kuusi model fits into almost any garden and is available with a number of configuration options and includes a roof covering made from black bitumen roof shingle. One variant offers a small terrace with seating, so users can maximise rest and relaxation outside the cabin too. If users prefer more daylight within the cabin, they can choose from two different rear window elements to let the sunshine in – half moon or full glass. The idea for the other new barrel sauna was that if it fell on ‘fertile soil’ a Finn would say ‘Kaski’. Like the Kuusi model, the new Kaski

sauna offers a cosy atmosphere of a barrel combined with the option of a view and is also available in half moon or full glass along with three different sizes. The biggest visible difference between the two new models is the dark Thermo-Pine wood of the Kaski which harmonises perfectly with the lime interior and gives the whole barrel a stylish touch. Thermally modified wood is a natural, non-toxic alternative to chemically treated wood products for the home. The wood is essentially ‘cooked’ in oxygen-free ovens at high temperatures which changes the cellular and molecular make up of wood by removing all organic compounds from the wood cells. In essence, the cooking of the wood creates a naturally durable product that will, in theory, be permanently resistant to water, fungus, insects and decay.

Filtration For A Wet Leisure Nation

Some of the most important products that lie at the centre of any modern and efficient water cleansing system are those associated with filtration. What was for a long time considered an essential yet uninspiring sector has seen a number of innovations over recent years and filtration products, in their many guises, are now providing more effective water management and are delivering cost savings too. This issue, we showcase just some of the available filtration solutions By Jon Wadeson

W

hen it comes to products to provide the filtration for the water circulating in UK pools and spas, there really is a broad range of options available for an equally broad set of operating environments found across the nation. Normally located behind the scenes, and previously regarded as somewhat low tech in their operation and function, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of recent innovations which have improved the solutions on offer for what is without doubt, a critical part of any wet leisure set up. As a result of the advances made, some products have become more flexible, others are now more durable and some are reducing the amount of water that is used. All of these help to lower operating costs, so naturally, the developments are welcomed by both the trade and even more so by the owners and operators of pools and spas across the UK. With numerous existing options combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer, so this issue we highlight just some of the current crop of filtration options for installations, both big and small, that can be found across our wet leisure nation.

Calplas filters are reinforced with steel at every point where the filter is subject to extra stress. These filters are beautifully finished with a striking blue UV-resistant gel coating. They have cast-in threaded connections and solid support feet moulded onto the main frame for unrivalled stability and durability. Models feature top diffusers, distribution arms and internal piping to ensure optimal water flow, filtration and efficiency. “Getting the right filter is essential for a pool to run at its best, and there are a lot of factors to consider,” said Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “Our expert team will help you find the filter most suited for your installation from our wide range.”

ESTABLISHED OR NEW – SCP HAS FILTRATION BRANDS FOR EVERY NEED SCP UK supply a wide range of filter solutions from many leading brands within the sector including Hayward, Lacron, Pentair and Waterco. They also have a UK exclusive in the supply of SuperPool products. One solution which has stood the test of time is the Triton Neo range from Pentair. With a reputation built over 40 years of simplicity, performance, clarity and reliability, the Triton Neo remains a favourite choice for pool owners around the globe.

FINE FILTRATION FROM SOME OF THE SECTOR’S BIGGEST NAMES Golden Coast has an extensive range of filtration systems from some of the biggest names in the sector, all offering the highest levels of performance and reliability. PPG Filter Deluxe is a high-end filter made with some of the best features in the industry and is ideal for even the most demanding pool. It has a reinforced tank for durability and allows easy maintenance thanks to its new super-size 10-inch transparent lid. PPG Filter Deluxe is available in four sizes to cater for a range of pools. Golden Coast is the UK distributor for the internationally renowned Calplas polyester filters. Ideal for large industrial applications,

The Triton Neo is not just quick to fit but easy to maintain too. Routine cleaning and backwashing are quick and safe. A ‘swingaway’ diffuser makes for easy access when servicing, deep cleaning or with wintering. Outstanding water clarity is ensured by a 360-degree diffuser which evenly spreads the water across a perfectly flat filtering bed. Below the sand, lateral tubes further filter out particles larger than 40 microns. With the option of ClearPro – a patented technology by Pentair – there’s also the option to reach a very fine level of filtration, four times better than with a conventional sand filter. With its unique, seamless moulded shell of glass reinforced resin, the Triton Neo’s outer shell is immune from corrosion and products within the range are justifiably known as some of the toughest pool filters on the market. With top or side mount valve configurations available, there’s a model for every application. SCP UK introduced the SuperPool TC side mount filters last year. Available in a range of sizes, these products are a laminated filter manufactured with polyester resin and fibreglass. Equipped with collectors of 1” diameter and diffuser of highly resistant PVC and PP plastic, they are fitted with pressure gauge, manual air and water purge valves and a side-mount 6-way multiport valve with filter, backwash, rinse, recirculate, waste and closed options.

FOR FILTRATION NEEDS BOTH BIG OR SMALL, CERTIKIN’S RANGE COVERS IT ALL For new filter installations, an OC-1 filter is the obvious choice. Available exclusively in the UK from Certikin there is a range of filters available that come supplied complete with the lightweight OC-1 media. The filters are specially designed to work in perfect harmony with it and complement the amazing advantages this unique media provides. As well as being popular across domestic installations, OC-1 Media also excels in the commercial sector. The Certikin SLX range of commercial filters are the workhorse of a commercial pool and with a wide range covering sizes from 1.05m through to 3.00m, and options for laterals and nozzles with various pressure ranges and accessories, any pool can be catered for. The standard SLX lateral version comes at 2.5 bar rating with commercial laser cut 50mm laterals making them robust for the commercial environment and all backed up with a ten-year warranty. Potential savings in running costs come from the ability to reduce pump speeds and reduce backwashing. Add to that the advantage for new installations of the filter arriving with the media already installed and you can see that OC-1 is the obvious choice for the commercial application. For those that prefer sand or glass media, the Vision range of domestic bobbin wound filters from Certikin are some of the most reliable and popular on the market. Using the latest in fibreglass winding technology, they are available in top and side mount versions, the latter of which comes with the patented 10” lid, making servicing quick and easy. Backed up by an impressive ten-year full tank warranty, the unique design also features a see-through valve mounting ring

NEW FOR 2024 – A SELECTION OF DINOTEC FILTERS FROM OCEA UK Ocea UK – who are now part of the successful CF Group – have been able to handpick a large selection of CF’s product range to produce a 2024 catalogue of dreams to sit alongside their current premium ranges that are available for the UK market. The Dinotec sand filter series is one of the

New from Ocea UK, the Dinotec ProFil S sand filter will be available for the for 2024 season

selections and the popular ProFil S model comes with a filter tank produced using a high-quality, fibreglass reinforced polyester. This makes the ProFil S particularly resistant to pressure, elastic and durable. Due to the seamless one-piece construction, the filter sand can be filled higher, which in turn results in an improved filtration effect and increased water quality. With automatic and manual tank ventilation included as standard, specifiers and purchasers can also put their own kit together by choosing the desired components to suit each filter tank. Models are available for pools with water volumes up to 160m3 and each comes with the option of a transparent plexi-glass cover section for checking the backwashing from above the tank. The filter ensures mechanical cleaning of the water from coarse contamination (dirt, hair, skin particles etc.) and an efficient circulation of the pool water. With striking yellow or blue colour options available, Ocea UK will be stocking these filtration products in their new Trade Centre facility in Witney, Oxfordshire. This will house a huge range of stock from the catalogue offering that can be taken away the same day.

EVOQUA’S DEFENDER® FP-SERIES – IDEAL FOR SMALLER COMMERCIAL POOL INSTALLATIONS In 2021, Evoqua Water Technologies introduced the Defender® FP-Series regenerative media filtration (RMF) system which has been designed to deliver maximum performance for swim schools, health clubs and other small to medium size commercial aquatics venues. THE BEST FILTRATION MEDIA ON THE MARKET

NOW AVAILABLE FROM CERTIKIN Producing crystal clear water, Activated Filter Media (AFM®) is the best performing filter media on the market with a certified 1-micron filtration rate which will remove about 50% more organic substances from the water than sand and other glass filter media. AFM® is a direct replacement for sand, doubling the performance of sand filters without the need for additional investments in infrastructure. It is suitable for all types of pools including natural & saltwater pools, and is available from Certikin who are now an official distributor. Key benefits of AFM®: • Crystal clear water • Lower chlorine consumption • No chlorine smell and up to 50% less THMs • Risk of infection by bacteria and parasites such as Legionella, Pseudomonas and Cryptosporidium is reduced to an absolute minimum • Same performance for many years with AFM® outlasting all other filter media

WATERCO MICRON SMDD, SPDD AND MD FILTERS – WITH 4 BAR AS STANDARD In recent decades, Waterco Micron commercial media filters have become a go-to for filtration system designers worldwide. From swimming pools to desalination plants, from fish farms to sewage treatment – the combination of high quality and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, highly cost-effective lifetime servicing costs, minimal downtime and continued investment in research and development has earned Waterco their well-deserved place at the top of the list of many a consultant’s equipment specification list. Waterco offer Micron filters in a range of maximum operating pressure ratings: 2.5 bar; 4 bar; 6 bar; and 8 bar models have been available for some time, but the range has more recently been extended to 10 bar, opening up a whole new range of opportunities within more specialist water treatment applications. Swimming pool filtration systems typically operate at the lower end of this scale, with 2.5 bar being more than the adequate maximum for most. Waterco has observed a shift in the design requirements of consultants operating at the premium end of the market. A filter should of course be able to withstand being over-pressurised for a short period. However, rarely taken into account is the detrimental effect this can have on a freshly manufactured GRP filter. Fibreglass resins can take many weeks (dependent on atmospheric conditions) to harden to their maximum strength and stress the filter shells so soon after manufacture can cause micro-fissures to fracture the shell

After observing a shift in the design requirements, Waterco offer this SPDD along with their SMDD and MD Micron filters with 4 bar as standard

almost imperceptibly, and could ultimately shorten the service life of the filter. As a result of this shift in the industry, Waterco decided to lead the way by offering all Micron SMDD (lateral underdrains), SPDD (nozzle plate underdrains), and MD (horizontal) filters in 4 bar as standard. This upgrade was introduced without any connected price increase as a demonstration of Waterco’s ongoing commitment to leading the market in premium quality water filtration equipment.

TOTAL POOL’S CERAMIFLO MEMBRANES PROVIDE ULTRAFILTRATION Total Pool have successfully established the Ceramiflo micro filtration system in the UK as a licensed sole supplier and installer.

CASE STUDY POOLS WELCOME INNOVATIVE CERAMIFLO TECHNOLOGY Total Pool have been actively installing and operating the Ceramiflo micro filtration system for the past ight years. The technology has been tried and tested and proven it can save pool costs with 14 units already installed in the UK. The 3 micron micro filtration system has been successfully retrofitted in some very restrictive plant rooms and generally without disruption to the pool operation. The Ceramiflo system can be fully stripped down and brought through single access doorways and stairwells, as was done in Pontardawe, Stretford Sports Village and here at Ruthin Leisure Centre. In all of these

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 69+70+73+74_SPN_December_23_Filtration.indd 73

cases, the old plant was isolated and remained in situ while the new Ceramiflo was installed nearby. This can be carried out in many plant rooms because the footprint is so compact, being just 20% as compared to that of a traditional sand filter. The straightforward installation means there are no disruptive civil works required and the pool can remain open to the public, so the factors have a very positive impact on the overall cost and feasibility of filter refurbishment work. Total Pool have gathered data at key sites to demonstrate reductions in operational costs and are seeing some very

encouraging savings in energy, water and chlorine consumption and reports are available from

Swim England upon request that demonstrate Ceramiflo’s performance.

FILTRATION The unit includes a fully automatic chemical cleaning system (CIP) which can exclude staff intervention and also save major costs on water, chemical and more important energy. Ceramiflo membranes have a 3mu pour size which consistently filters out 85% of all 2-3mu particulates. This is an extremely robust strategy in the removal of crypto sized particulates which are understood to be 4-6mu in size. The membranes are made of silicon carbide which is extremely durable and resistant to degradation. This compares very favourable against traditional filters which require costly media changes and refurbishments. There are currently fourteen Ceramiflo systems installed in the UK and they are entirely automatic and are monitored over the internet as part of the Ceramiflo service contract. Staff intervention is now simplified with no need to operate and backwash their filters. Ceramiflo is very compact so when old plant is due for replacement, they can often slot into the plant room with the original filters remaining. Furthermore, they are often installed seamlessly with no interruption or disruption to bathing, due to the units having the unique ability to be completely stripped down and taken through restricted walk ways, single doors and stairs. As a smart choice for pool operators there are some big gains to be had in terms of sustainability. Ceramiflo removes more dirt from the pool and that dirt is frequently removed from the membranes, leading to a drop in chlorine usage. Finally, since the membranes are cleaned mainly with air, backwash water usage is reduced by up to 60%.

Total Pool’s Ceramiflo systems are entirely automatic and are monitored over the internet as part of the Ceramiflo service contract

ASTRALPOOL’S VIC FILTERS – A POPULAR COMMERCIAL CHOICE Available from AstralPool UK, Vic bobbin wound filters are the company’s most popular option for commercial projects. Featuring a new and innovative screw-top lid with quick-locking mechanism for easy access. The lid closes directly onto the filter body, eliminating the need for intermediary parts such as neck collars, rings etc. and offers straightforward access to the interior as well as saving time when opening the filter lid. Other characteristics and enhancements include: • The incorporation of the air purge into the top filter lid itself, ensuring total air elimination from the filter • Newly designed, larger and more resistant ABS collector arms • Quicker water drainage and air relief due to larger diameter purges (Ø 1”) • An increase in the distance between the top of the sand bed and diffuser head to ensure better water distribution during the filtration stage and to avoid sand spilling into the overflow during the washing stage • A filter bed height 1m. Assembly is quick too, due to a lack of screws combined with innovative threaded flange connections. With this bolt-free system, the risk of occasional seepage through screw holes has been avoided as well as the accompanying weakening of the area. Similarly, oxidisation problems are eliminated due to the absence of metallic parts and assembly is simplified and thus much quicker. Thanks to the increased diameter of the collector arms, the elimination of intermediary joints and longer screw threads injected into the tubes, AstralPool have Available from AstralPool UK, Vic bobbin wound filters are the company’s most popular option for commercial projects

OPINION

A Sustainable Future Hinges On A Greater Collaborative Focus

In a different ‘Opinion’ format than usual, in this last issue of the year, we highlight some of the thoughts and views from a number of the attendees at a recent industry roundtable event which focused on the ways to create a sustainable future for public wet leisure facilities around the UK

T

he leisure sector, and specifically facilities with swimming pools, must move out of restraining silos and place greater focus on data transparency, collaboration and estate rationalisation to ensure it has a sustainable future and prevent public spaces from disappearing – that’s according to leading voices at a recent industry roundtable. The event, hosted by modular swimming pool manufacturer Myrtha Pools, saw attendees from national governing body Swim England, framework provider Pagabo, construction, property and development firm Wates and more discuss an aging UK leisure stock. Current figures from Swim England put an estimated 1,500 public pools in England as over 40 years old, with a significant number having closed since 2010 – leading the call for greater emphasis on techniques that could revitalise the leisure sector’s future, including modern methods of construction (MMC). Innocenzo Pochini, Technical Director at Myrtha Pools, said: “Integration is the missing link – of engineers, architects and the wider supply chain. What we are experiencing right now is an industry crisis, which always brings innovation to the fore, but we need a closer focus on information management, and co-operative working, if we are to change leisure’s future.” Richard Lamburn, Head of Facilities at Swim England, said: “COVID-19 of course, exacerbated some of the issues already prevalent in swimming, but the investment in capital stock is still not there, and we have an aging set of facilities, that will lead to significant loss for the industry if action isn’t taken. “Where we sit today, with a lot of pools over 30 years old, half have never had a refurbishment. We’ve worked hard this year to encourage M&E innovation in the industry – capital interventions that can help drive energy improvements and offset some of the huge running cost of heating a pool. That led to the £60m+ in funding awarded from

The Budget this year, but it’s not enough to transform the industry in its entirety and save public spaces from going under.” The application of data was well cited within conversation, with David Minton, founder of market intelligence firm Leisure DB, calling for sporting and local authorities to be more open to ‘information sharing’, so that the government can make informed budgeting decisions. David said: “The main problem is we don’t know enough about demand. The arts and culture industry has been driving this type of data for years, but its only really in the past ten years or so that local gyms, swimming clubs and associations have been not just gathering, but asking for more data from their users. Not only the profile of individuals attending, but also the times of day, hours they attend, classes and much more. “This data is invaluable when it comes to The Budget and other funding decisions and is one of the key drivers in ensuring the leisure sector receives greater funding in the future. If government officials can see the economic benefit and social value being driven, it’s a win-win.” Estate rationalisation was also a key topic emerging from the roundtable, with Adam Brumfitt, Regional Delivery Manager at Pagabo, pointing to combined civic office and leisure offerings in the Midlands, which are maximising public space and driving significant social value to communities. The example was further broadened by Teo Bunyan, Pre-construction Manager at Wates, and John Morgan, Director at Leonard Design Architects, who pointed to Bingham Arena Leisure Centre and Jubilee Community Hall, as well as collective spa and leisure offerings. Having opened in March this year, the space in Bingham offers a 25m pool, teaching facilities and exercise studios, alongside public amenities such as a café and hall. Meanwhile SwimSpa was evidenced as a way of social interaction and wellbeing coming together under one roof.

COVID-19 of course, exacerbated some of the issues already prevalent in swimming, but the investment in capital stock is still not there, and we have an aging set of facilities, that will lead to significant loss for the industry if action isn’t taken” 80 December 2023 SPN 80_SPN_December_2023_Opinion.indd 80

Teo said: “Co-location of facilities are changing the dynamic and allowing much more synergy between developers and clients in the use of public spaces.” John added: “It’s a much more macro way of thinking – authorities can leave a gas guzzling pool and replace it with a more efficient offering. The solution won’t be right for everyone, and refurbishment still has its place, but it is something that could be cyclical and gets adopted across the country.” A final point was noted the application of Passivhaus principles, with two leisure centres, Blairgowrie Recreation Centre in Scotland, and Spelthorne Leisure Centre in Staines, currently in development under the design model, which utilises a combination of energy efficiency and clean energy generation to offset usage. Steve Peet, associate at structural engineering firm Engenuiti, said: “Innovation has fast forwarded the leisure market, particularly with Passivhaus, which we’re already seeing crop up in leisure and education in particular across the UK. “It has opened up more conversations for data and information exchange, as well as pool filtration and MEP improvements – it’s bringing people together and getting that all important early collaboration happening much faster between architects, contractors, engineers and clients. “It also saves some of the examples we’ve seen where clients change their mind halfway through a build and try to strip back or add in low carbon schemes mid-project – it doesn’t work and just leads to timelines slipping, budgets wasted and frustration all round.” Katherine Morton, regional design lead at main contractor Stepnell: “It’s [Passivhaus] the first thing to go because of cost. It begins as ‘nice to haves’, but our conversations with clients are really showing that more awareness is needed from a long term perspective – it might cost you more now, but it will pay off in the long-run, and all stakeholders need to be involved in the conversation from the offset for this to happen effectively.” The roundtable also included perspectives from property and construction consultancies Gleeds and EDGE, pool installers Barr + Wray, structural engineers Hexa Consulting, mechanical engineers Prism Offsite Manufacturing, and sustainability consultancy Sustainable Wellness.
