Since the last edition of SPN, the weather in the UK has been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride. So much so that within just a handful of days, many parts of the country experienced record-breaking heat, with the hottest ever temperature being confirmed by the Met Office at Cambridge University Botanic Garden measured at a sweltering 38.7°C (101.7°F). Yet in other areas, there was torrential storms and major flooding. An unpredictable summer is never ideal news for the wet leisure industry but despite the climate uncertainty (which is really par for the course in the UK), many suppliers have reported being extremely busy and wet leisure facilities up and down the country have been utilised by a public that just can’t say no to the idea of using water to enhance holiday fun and cool off in. With more people taking to the water at this time of the year, it is appropriate that in this issue we have an in depth look at the latest solutions that are keeping the water clean whilst reducing or removing the need for chlorine use. We also take a look at just some of the labour-saving products that are simply and accurately testing the water in swimming pools and spas. Plus, we highlight the latest

A sector that has changed immensely over recent years is pool and spa lighting and we take a look at products which are delivering some truly stunning effects both inside and outside the water. Stainless steel is also under the spotlight as we look at pools, spas and accessories that are utilising the benefits of what is a truly flexible, durable and great looking material. Pieces on commercial filtration and in-house manufactured products are also included and if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his opinion on the subject of leadership, whilst the STA highlight five top tips for ensuring bather safety over the summer months. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus the British entries shortlisted for the 2019 European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA are revealed. In addition, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad. So, with our usual wide range of subjects covered, hopefully we’ve provided a bit of something for everyone in this issue of SPN. I hope you enjoy reading it and stay cool for the rest of the summer.

Guncast And Heatstar Create Impressive Prep School Pool Guncast Swimming Pools has built an unrivalled reputation in the UK for creating high-end swimming pools, spas and wellness suites. The company were recently approached by a prep school in Kent with a brief to refurbish an existing 40 year old outdoor school pool and envelope it into a new building. However, after thorough inspection, it quickly became clear that the existing pool did not provide suitable structural integrity for constructing the new build. Therefore, it was decided to remove the old shell and opt for a new installation. The replacement pool complements the new building’s minimalist theme. It is finished throughout with clean-cut glass mosaic tiles that create a stunning contrast with the porcelain surround. A mix of natural light and uncomplicated textures provide a calm, comfortable and efficient environment for children. The new school pool measures 15m by 6m and the shallow end of the indoor pool reaches 0.9m allowing even the youngest pupils of the school to enjoy and partake in lessons. The deep end stands at 1.8m catering for a wide range of swimming abilities. Guncast services also included air handling

and ductwork and Guncast chose Heatstar for this work, their preferred environmental control suppliers. Guncast have worked with Heatstar on many prestigious projects over a period of over seven years and appreciate the comprehensive and professional services which Heatstar bring to each project. In this particular installation Heatstar supplied an XF EC 6000 Super unit. This high efficiency heat recovery ventilation system is centred upon a high efficiency ‘cross flow’ plate air-to-air heat recuperator. The XF utilises fresh air introduction to

provide natural dehumidification and utilises the recuperator to maximise heat extraction from the expelled room air. The XF also provides the latest ‘Blue-EC’ ultra-efficient intelligent digital inverter fan technology. Guncast Swimming Pools 01844 216264 www.guncast.com Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com

NEWS SWAFFHAM SWIMMING POOL GIVEN GO-AHEAD Plans for a new indoor swimming pool at Swaffham in Norfolk have been approved by Breckland Council. The proposals include a 6 x 4 metre pool and the new, privately run facility will offer swimming lessons and other recreational activities such as baby massage and yoga. No objections were raised by Swaffham Town Council to the new pool which will be located in an old industrial unit. Calls have previously been made for improved leisure facilities in Swaffham and for a new public pool to be opened, however no decision has yet been made on bringing a public facility to the town.

A TRIO OF LONGTERM CONTRACTS FOR RLSS UK The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has secured a trio of long-term contracts with multi-site leisure operators to help ensure the highest levels of safety in and around their swimming pools. The UK’s leading water safety charity has worked with Active Northumberland, Fife Sports & Leisure Trust and Mosaic Spa and Health Clubs for a number of years. Now, each of the operators has committed to extend their long-standing relationship with the RLSS UK with a new three-year partnership. The new agreements will see RLSS UK work closely with the operators to provide products and services to meet the safety needs of each organisation over the next three years. “We are delighted to extend our successful relationships with these three organisations, which are some of our oldest and most valued customers. We look forward to working with them to help their businesses continue to thrive in the future,” says Helen Bowker, Commercial Manager at RLSS UK.

Infinity Pool Concept Boasts 360 Degree Views Of London Death defying swimming pools are set to become the newest architectural trend in central London after designers at Compass Pools developed Infinity London, the only building in the world to incorporate a 360-degree infinity pool. The concept features a 600,000-litre pool built right on top of a 55-storey building. The pool is made from cast acrylic rather than glass, as this material transmits light at a similar wavelength to water so that the pool will look perfectly clear. The floor of the pool is also transparent, allowing visitors to see the swimmers and sky above. Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral staircase, the design of which is based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out. Other advanced technical features include a built-in anemometer to monitor the wind speed. This is linked to a computer-controlled building

management system to ensure the pool stays at the right temperature and water doesn’t get blown down to the streets below. Boasting an innovative twist on renewable energy, the pool’s heating system will use waste energy from the air conditioning system for the building run through a heat exchanger to heat the water for the pool. A full spectrum of lights will also be fitted which will give the building the appearance of a sparkling jewel-topped torch at night. Infinity London could kick off construction as early as 2020 if all the partners and contractors are confirmed. It will have a five-star international hotel on the top floors of the building with the pool used by the guests. Compass Ceramic Pools (UK) 0333 456 7111 www.compass-pools.co.uk

Riverside Centre Officially Opened By Royalty Chelmsford’s Riverside Leisure Centre was officially opened by His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent in June. Accompanied by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Essex and The Mayor of Chelmsford, The Duke was taken on a tour of the new complex, meeting some of the people who have played a key part in its creation. One of the highlights of the tour was undoubtedly the new flexible 10-lane pool, which has a central boom and moveable floor to allow lessons and public swimming to take place at the same time. Chelmsford City Council’s Chief Executive, Nick Eveleigh thanked The Duke for his attendance and paid tribute to everyone who had contributed to the venture: “Undertakings on this scale require great commitment and this fantastic

new facility is no exception. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has played a part in creating this asset for our community. May this next iteration of Riverside Leisure Centre continue to serve and inspire our growing city.” Representatives from Sport England were also present at the opening. The organisation has invested £1.5m of National Lottery funding into the centre. Mike Diaper, Sport England’s Director of Children, Young People and Inactivity said he hoped the site’s central location and multisport facilities would make

it easier for people to get active all year round: “Activity levels across England are rising and centres like Riverside, along with the people who run them, are supporting more people than ever to gain the benefits from an active life. We are delighted to see the opening of Riverside Leisure Centre and to continue to work with Chelmsford City Council. I hope the people of Chelmsford enjoy using this new centre.”

NEWS £15M KIRKLEES LEISURE CENTRE PROJECT GATHERS PACE The demolition of the Spenborough Pool & Fitness Complex to allow for a new £15m replacement to be built looks set to start in September. Bosses at Kirklees Council have submitted a notice indicating they want to start knocking down the ageing structure in readiness for the planned Spen Valley Leisure Centre to be built on the site in Liversedge in the north of the West Yorkshire borough. The scheme, which is being funded primarily by the Council, would also see Kirklees Active Leisure contributing £750,000. The plans include an eightlane 25m pool with seating gallery, a five-lane 20m training pool with movable floor, a fitness suite, and exercise and cycling studios.

HISTORIC POOLS ORGANISATION SUPPORTS LIDO BOOK LAUNCH Historic Pools of Britain was delighted to be a part of the launch of The Lido Guide, including a special event at Jubilee Park Woodhall Spa. Guests were treated to a preview ahead of its publication and the chance to chat with co-author Janet Wilkinson about the experiences of working on the book and her own lido life journey, which began at the age of 8 with a trip to Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool. What Janet and co-author Emma Pusill have done to put lidos literally on the map with The Lido Guide is incredible. Having a publication like this, that makes all lidos (big and small) easily discoverable and accessible is invaluable. For those campaigning to re-open it gives a beacon of hope to show funders and supporters just how relevant and important a role lidos have to play.

Poolpods Installed At Two Northern Ireland Sites Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth was joined by Jayne Moore from Sport NI, Robert Heyburn from Department for Communities, Andrea Herron from Disability Sport NI, Council Officers and local resident Gareth McNeilly to launch the new Poolpods at Antrim Forum and Valley Leisure Centre. The platform lift, developed for the London 2012 Paralympic Games is transforming access to swimming pools for people with disabilities and restricted mobility. The Council recently received £30,000 investment from Disability Sport NI through the Department for Communities and Sport NI, which allowed for the installation of a Poolpod. Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth commented: “I would like to thank Department for Communities, Sport NI and Disability Sport NI for their generous contribution towards these Poolpods and I’m delighted that Council has decided to approve spend for the installation of a second Poolpod at the Valley Leisure Centre. This fantastic piece of technology will contribute to making our leisure centres more accessible for all users.” Kevin O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer of Disability Sport NI welcomed the funding: “The facilities that have received the Poolpods have

shown a great commitment to improving access and providing their staff with disability inclusion training. This project is part of the wider District Council Disability Sports Hub Project which recently saw a significant investment into disability sports equipment in every council area.” Local resident, Gareth McNeilly commented: “As a competitive disabled golfer I know the excellent benefits both physically and mentally of sport and exercise and I’m sure these new pods will encourage more people with limited mobility to consider swimming as a safe and enjoyable form of exercise.” PoolPod Products 0141 237 2127 www.poolpodproducts.com

RLSS UK Partners With Neilson Holidays

Waterco Solutions Chosen For Natural Swimming Pond Renovation Built in 1896, this private estate is situated in the heart of the oldest conservation area in Southsea, Hampshire. It features an abundance of beautifully preserved Victorianera design elements protected under Grade II-listing status. Part of the renovation process to transform the iconic property into a family home included the refurbishment of an existing outdoor wading pool. The challenge, however, was to ensure the upgrade not only accommodated the needs of the residents, but also blended in seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. Mountain Pools owner Tim Gunning and his wife Helen, who specialise in the design and installation of natural swimming ponds, recommended a reliable solution that would become an oasis for the residents and the local ecosystem. Knowing that the globally renowned water filtration specialists at Waterco have been manufacturing and supplying equipment for over 30 years meant that the team at Mountain Pools had full confidence in both the supply, quality of the product, and aftersales service, resulting in a range of Waterco equipment being specially selected for this natural swimming pond. “Five Exotuf 702 bead filters were

required due to the size and depth of the pool, and because the house was located in a conservation area, the existing regeneration area could not be expanded,” explained Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher. Four of Waterco’s Exotuf 702 bead filters were fitted in conjunction with the MultiCyclone MC16 and an Aquamite 1.25hp pump whilst the fifth Exotuf bead filter is powered by a Hydrotuf 2.0hp pump and MultiCyclone to run in conjunction with the Exotuf 450 sand filter. The Hydrostorm pumps were then installed to operate the waterfall feature. “Water feeds the Exotuf T450, which was installed as a nitrate binding vessel,” continued Tony. “The resin media is used to remove excess nitrates in the water by the process of ionic action.” Three years after the pool was completed, it now looks like part of the natural landscape. Following the success of their partnership last year, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) is helping the award-winning activity holiday provider, Neilson Holidays, to prepare its hotels for this year’s season. Neilson Holidays have worked with RLSS UK in 2018 and 2019, to deliver their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) to staff, using one of Neilson’s properties in Greece as their base. These members of staff will go on to work in locations across Europe including Greece, Croatia and Spain, in a variety of roles. More than 90,000 RLSS UK pool lifeguards are NPLQ trained in the UK. The five-day course covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. “At Neilson, we take the safety and welfare of our guests using our swimming pools extremely seriously. We are delighted to be working alongside RLSS UK over the previous two years, in the training of our staff,” said Gary Sinclair, Activity Operations Manager for Neilson Holidays. “It is an exciting opportunity to further strengthen our partnership with Neilson Holidays by delivering another two NPLQ courses for their team,” said David Springthorpe, Qualification and Workforce Support Manager for RLSS UK. “Being part of a project that will see our NPLQ holders ensuring the safety of bathers across the UK and many different destinations across Europe, is a testament to our robust qualification and good relationship with Neilson.” RLSS UK 0300 323 0096 www.rlss.org.uk

Blu-Pod Portable Pool Lift Is Perfect Small Pool Solution When East Riding Haltemprice Leisure required a pool lift solution to make its small pool accessible and inclusive to all, The Pool Lift Company were asked to provide a suitable portable pool lift solution. With a fixed pool hoist already in place for the large swimming pool, the leisure operator was eager to find a solution for its small pool which has steps. This would enable users with limited movement due to their physical disabilities and those who are unable to weight bear themselves, step free access to the shallow small pool where they can benefit from warmer water temperatures. Due to the build of the small pool and its surrounding area, a portable pool lift solution

10 August 2019 SPN 4+10_SPN_August_19_News_General.indd 10

was required which would also eliminate any structural alterations. The Pool Lift Company recommended its Blu-Pod Portable Pool Lift, which is compact, easy to manoeuvre and can be easily stored when not in use. It also provides other operator benefits including being able to transfer users from the changing room to the pool side in a safe,

comfortable and dignified manner. As a result of a successful grant application to the National Lottery Community Fund Awards, East Riding Haltemprice Leisure, in conjunction with the Maxi Fun Club, were able to proceed with buying the Blu-Pod Portable Pool Lift. This is now in use and providing step free access for members, everyday visitors and swimming clubs such as the ERYDSA Haltemprice Dolphins and the Maxi Fun Club for disabled people in the area. Content Takes Shape For PWTAG’s Annual Conference Last November saw the second of PWTAG’s annual conferences take place and it was a sell-out success. Plans for this year’s are well advanced and the day is already looking like it will be packed with even more vital, ground-breaking presentations plus important news about PWTAG’s Poolmark scheme for validating pools. The details are not as yet fully finalised (so keep an eye on the PWTAG website), but there are already a number of speakers and subjects highlights worth making a note of: Dr Rachel Chalmers heads the NHS crypto reference unit will review vital issues regarding Cryptosporidium: why not more monitoring, why so little baseline data, how should testing inform dealing with an outbreak? Martin Wood of Pool Sentry will present the results of an important study of filtration effectiveness. He will explain how particles of various sizes (including 5μm crypto oocysts) are filtered out and what affects success – filter type, speed, flocculants etc. The EU BPR regs can be intimidating, dealing with both effectiveness and safety and Richy Mariner of the European Chemical Industry Council

will look at these from a manufacturers, suppliers and pool operator point of view. Chris Hebblewhite of GLL presents an alternative view on computer vision systems for detecting drowning accidents. Professor Christina Villaneuva of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health will talk about THMs and other byproducts which continue to challenge our desire to provide heathy swimming pools. The technical challenges of looking after lidos will be looked at by Emma Pussin who has co-authored a new book on the subject, and she will draw on her experience at the Portishead pool. Robin Mitchell of PALM Academy will look at Poolmark which is being re-launched with an easier, more cost-effective administration. History Repeats Itself As Historic ‘Miracle’ Lido Re-opens When two of the country’s most decorated Olympic, Commonwealth and Paralympic athletes took the plunge in some of the purest waters in the whole of England, history was repeating itself. It could have been a very different story for the New Bath Hotel Lido, an attraction which was originally unveiled in the 1930s as England’s only outdoor lido fed by thermal spring water. The pool, added as the crowning glory of the historic Hotel in the celebrated spa town of Matlock Bath, attracted members of the British Olympic swimming team, civic dignatories and even internationally renowned film star Alma Taylor to its first unveiling on 21 June 1934. But the closure of the hotel in 2013 looked like calling time on the lido that had survived the Second World War

12 August 2019 SPN 7+9+12_SPN_August_19_News_General.indd 12

and the massive decline in outdoor pools in the 1960s and 1970s Exactly 85 years after it was originally opened, the newly restored attraction was unveiled with similar pomp and circumstance as it was first time around. Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport was joined by celebrated Paralympian Ryan Taylor and the Mayor of Matlock, Councillor David Hughes, to re-open the newly restored lido which was the final piece of the jigsaw for the New Bath Hotel following a £3m refurbishment. The warm springs of Matlock Bath – which have been renowned for their ‘miracle’ healing capabilities since the 17th century – circulate constantly throughout the lido. Richard Devine, Manager of the New Bath Hotel, said: “To be able to bring back the lido to its 1930s splendor is a proud day for the New Bath Hotel. It is a fantastic asset for Peak District tourism with an amazing history. “

VG7 – A Premium Portable Speaker For The Outdoors

Kleenpool Ultimate Paddlecare Kit

We all have the spontaneity of paddling in water, both at the seaside but also in the back garden, especially when summer temperatures soar. Freshly filled paddling pools are generally safe, but given that water is now considered a precious resource, it’s wasteful to drain down and refill them constantly, and there’s certainly no need to. With water conservation and ease of use in mind, Complete Pool Controls (CPC) have introduced the Kleenpool Ultimate Paddlecare Kit which features: Ultimate Paddlecare Algaecide Protector – prevents algae formation and/or destroys algae spores Ultimate Paddlecare Super Fizz Tablets – destroys harmful bacteria that enters the paddling pool. With a suggested selling price (SSP) of £14.95 each (£149.50 per case of 10), each kit includes the following:

• 3 x Ultimate Paddlecare Algae Protector 50ml Sachets • 1 x Ultimate Paddlecare Super Fizz Tablets (20 x 3.2g) • 50 x Ultimate Paddlecare 3 Way Test Strips • 1 x Instruction Leaflet. The three main items – the Algae Protector Sachet, Super Fizz Tablets and Test Strips – can all be offered as separate products too, so there’s no excuse for water to be wasted once the kids have finished splashing around in the garden! The Kleenpool Ultimate Paddlecare Kit is just one of a number of easy to use water treatment products produced by CPC for the domestic sector. Announcing The Release Of SlipProtect Slatted Wet Room Mats Specialist provider of industrial health and safety matting, First Mats recently announced the release of a new breed of wet room safety mat that increases comfort and safety when used in areas where bare feet are common and the risk of slips are high. The new SlipProtect mats have been developed using high-quality PVC material with a focus on decreasing the risk of slips and falls in swimming pool areas. By raising users above the flat surface of the floor, where water can collect and increase the risk of slips, these mats ensure user safety across the board. “The SlipProtect mat provides the best in quality and comfort, which I think will be of great benefit to our customers. With superb quality and fantastic service at the heart of

what we do at First Mats, the SlipProtect mat represents an excellent addition to our growing range,” said Richard O’Connor, Marketing & Strategy Director at First Mats. Anti-slip matting designed specifically for use in swimming pool areas is commonly known to cause discomfort for users, with their bare feet being subjected to a high amount of pressure when applied to narrow slats. The new SlipProtect matting from First Mats tackles this issue head-on. By introducing a unique cross-ribbed design and wider slats, the mats provide a more comfortable surface than duckboard matting without any loss in safety.

The First Mats SlipProtect matting offers important anti-bacterial properties to prevent fungal growth. It is also resistant to commercial cleaning products, increasing longevity and decreasing the cost of replacement. A truly customisable matting option, the SlipProtect mat comes in several colours including blue, grey, white and beige. First Mats cut to length from rolls of 60cm, 80cm or 100cm in width, with standard roll lengths coming in at 10 metres. First Mats 0121 702 1659 www.firstmats.co.uk

New Approval Enhances Electrochlorination System’s Credentials Gaffey Technical Services, which is internationally recognised for its technical expertise and innovative product development, has revealed that its Hyprolyser® 280-2200 system is now approved under Regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000. This further acknowledges the quality of the Hyprolyser system which has already found considerable success on swimming pool and theme park applications, plus various water and general processing duties. The Gaffey Hyprolyser® system has been widely proven in commercial and municipal swimming pool, wastewater and private drinking water supply applications. It uses marketleading technology to generate sodium hypochlorite by applying an electrical current to a water and salt solution. This eliminates the need for chlorine to be stored on site, and so offers a reliable, low-risk and environmentally-friendly solution for disinfecting water. “This latest recognition marks a significant achievement and is another step forward in the progress we have been making with the Hyprolyser® product range,” commented Technical Director,

Andrew Gaffey. “This new compliance level for use in drinking water demonstrates that our Hyprolyser® 280 – 2200 system generates a high-quality product and meets strict standards for chemical impurities and toxicology. This opens up a whole new set of opportunities for the Hyprolyser® system and will allow far more organisations to benefit from the many advantages it offers.” The Hyprolyser® provides very high standards for product and operator safety. It uses salt for the electrochlorination process, and produces a chlorine solution strength below 1%. This eliminates both remedial chlorine injector maintenance, and the need to handle hazardous chlorine-based chemicals. The result is a low-hazard work area, simple operational requirements which can easily be handled by non-technical staff, a reduction in both the need for pH correction chemicals and regular specialised servicing, all of which have a positive impact on the whole-life system costs. Zodiac’s Sleek Z400iQ, Available Exclusively From Lighthouse The new Zodiac Z400iQ from Lighthouse ups the game on the design of air source heat pumps. With its sleek lines and two colour options (grey/silver and brown/bronze), the Z400iQ disappears elegantly into any pool’s surroundings. This discreet machine, fits around most pools, even in confined spaces the Z400iQ knows how to go unnoticed, halving the noise with its silence mode, which reduces the fan speed at the touch of a button. Vortex’s IKON Spa Wins Coveted Design Award IKON by Vortex Spas was announced a winner of Australia’s top industry design awards – the highest honour for design and innovation in the country – at the 61st annual Good Design Awards ceremony in Sydney in July. IKON won a prestigious Good Design Award Gold accolade for outstanding design and innovation in the product design category. These international design awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, and excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design. Vortex Leisure CEO Andrew Pullen says the Good Award win is a hugely significant achievement for the company. “It is fantastic recognition for the collaborative team effort that has gone into

Vortex Leisure CEO Andrew Pullen with the IKON spa

the design and production of IKON spa. We had an amazing Australasian design team of architects, designers, engineers, mould makers, and electronic specialists all involved to create what’s become the ‘concept car’ of the spa industry,” he said.

The Good Design Awards jury praised IKON on its “stunning design”. “Luxurious and modern, high quality, and with a unique design that transforms the traditional spa. The extra ledges for food and drinks are great additional features,” the jury commented.

Inspired by modern architecture, IKON moves away from the standard plastic square box and sits proudly on top of the landscape rather than sunk within it. Another significant innovation is IKON’s shape, with its faceted irregular polygon form and top deck under a design patent. For the first time, light weight, floating architectural stairs are integrated into the main spa design. IKON’s architectural cabinetry is made from aluminium composite cladding, the same material used on the exterior of the Dubai train station, and its maintenance free Flexi-teek decking is used on super yachts. Infrared Cabins Contribute To Firefighter Therapy

Reliability And Versatility From Vapac And Humidity Solutions

Infrared cabins have hit the news once again, this time as a potential therapy for firefighters. Studies in America have shown that infra heat offers numerous health benefits and, in this context, can help draw out the harmful toxins that may have been ingested in the course of a fire rescue. As a result, some fire stations are now installing infrared cabin saunas as a therapy treatment in an effort to reduce the risk of onset illnesses. In the UK, there has been an increased demand for infrared saunas, often for the health-related benefits they offer. As the long-term authorised partner for leading sauna producer Tylö, Golden Coast offers a comprehensive range of infra products, including the highly regarded and exceptionally versatile IR range. Infrared saunas are designed to provide a different kind of experience, delivering heat directly to the individual through low radiation IR panels. Employing the state-of-the-art technology, electromagnetic radiation heats the infra cabin safely, effectively and almost instantly. Importantly, it spreads the heat evenly, supporting detoxification throughout the body. Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast explained: “With its large heating panels, an infrared sauna helps to warm the body, and the experience is relaxing but not overwhelming. The heat is not as intense as a conventional sauna and allows the user to sit inside for a longer period of time. “An infrared sauna is easy to install and easy-to-use, and is one of the most versatile sauna solutions on the market.”

Since April this year, Humidity Solutions have been the UK’s exclusive distributor for Vapac’s range of steam room generators – a renowned brand which offers outstanding reliability and versatility. British manufactured and supported with technical back up and off the shelf spares and units, the product offers a great package of reliable operation, efficient and professional support with ex stock supply of equipment. One of the companies which recognises the value of the Vapac brand, and the service Humidity Solutions provides with this, is Glasgow-based Inca UK Ltd. The company supply and install steam rooms and spas for the commercial and domestic sectors and have been sourcing their steam room generators and spares from Humidity Solutions for over eight years. Emma Staniforth, Project Director at Inca commented: “At Inca UK, we specialise in sauna and steam solutions and rely on the quality and integrity of our suppliers for the components we cannot manufacture ourselves. Finding Humidity Solutions has been great for us for the supply of our steam generators and

humidification units as they have very quick lead times, with most of their products being stock items, and the reliability of their products is fantastic, working across a wide range of water conductivities and varying influencing factors that would have compromised the efficiency of some of their competitors’ products. Rob continued: “With our UK and European business growing year on year, we’re happy to confirm that we’ll be needing another 30 employees to support our success. As a leader in our marketplace, we’d simply outgrown our old premises and needed more modern space to continue moving from strength to strength, both in the UK and abroad.”

New E-commerce Webshop Fully Up And Running SPATEX 2019 saw Aqua Warehouse Group launch a new online webshop for spa retailers to improve their chemicals and accessories sales. Aqua Warehouse Group’s Managing Director Richard Hart explained: “The concept is simple, the dealer has their own branded accessory shop linked to their existing website, with their logo, their contact details and all their information about them. However the website is a copy of our trade site and we fulfill all orders on behalf of the dealer.” The advantages of such an online shop is that a dealer has a larger choice of hot tub related accessories that they are now able to promote and sell – but they do not have to stock, they do not have to pack and wrap, and they do not have to post to their customer – everything is done for them. So where is the catch? Richard said: “There is no catch, it’s a win, win, win for everyone.” Richard continued: “We have been quoted anything upwards of £5,000 for this type of individual e-commerce webshop,

however we are only charging a dealer £250 + VAT. This cost includes the fully functional online shop, this also includes some marketing point of sale products along with professional ongoing email shots to mail out to existing customers.” Aqua Warehouse Group have just started rolling out the individual online shops during the past few weeks to a small group of dealers to test the system before they could roll out to everyone. “We’ve had a couple of minor glitches, but everything is running smoothly now,” added Richard. NIVEKO Pool Completes Swedish Family Home

Mr and Mrs Lenander own a beautiful family house with a large garden in a peaceful region in the south of Sweden. Their three energetic children use the garden as a playground for a variety of games but they also love being in and around water and really enjoy swimming. “Formerly, if we decided to take the children to the beach, it was a logistical problem. What’s more, we were dependent on the weather. That’s why we decided to acquire an enclosed pool for our garden to be able to use it at least six months a year – even in bad weather. On a recommendation from our friends, who have owned a NIVEKO pool for a long time, being quite satisfied with it and the course of its installation, we contacted the Söderro Gård company,” said Mr Lenander. With the needs of all of the family in mind, the couple opted for an elegant NIVEKO

Skimmer Top Level pool solution which has an increased water level reaching almost to the pool edge. The slim skimmer type can be selected in the basic plastic variant or a stainless steel option is available, which provides a touch of exclusiveness. “We could hardly have imagined what the actual installation of the pool would involve, but everything went smoothly, without any complications,” said Mr Lenander. “Our children adore diving into the pool, to which we wanted to adapt the pool size. Another wish was stairs along the entire pool width to enjoy the sun on them while the children are playing in the pool. We discussed everything with the supplier and the result has fully satisfied us.” NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Fluidra Secures Equipment Contract For 22 Pools In Hungary Fluidra has been awarded the supply and installation of equipment for 22 pools for Debrecen Nagyerdei Strand, a €26.5m water park in the city of Debrecen, in eastern Hungary. The contract multinational company is valued at over €2m. Fluidra is also engaged in the design of the equipment and is currently handling the installation of the pools in coordination with a local construction company who are the main contractors for the project. The project, scheduled for completion in April 2020, will see Fluidra install the plantroom equipment, including 44 filters and over 100 pumps, among other components and parts. The group will also install the hydraulic system embedded in the shell and will run pressure tests prior to concreting. With over 200,000 inhabitants, Debrecen is the second-largest city in

the country and one of its leading cultural centres. Debrecen Nagyerdei Strand will be the largest water park in the city, covering a total water area of 5,700m2 and will use water drawn from hot spring pools. The new development’s design was chosen a few years ago during a successful design contest, and it replaces a previous facility of just 3,600 m2. The design is innovative in every sense of the word, both architecturally and regarding machinery and this outstanding project will serve Debrecen’s popular bathing culture and any programmes connected to water. One of the key benefits of the project’s design are its vertical construction elements, which saves building on a lot of green areas around the site resulting in a small footprint for the project.

Industry And Health Sectors Collaborate At World Aquatic Health™ Conference When the WAHC convenes 16-18 October at the Williamsburg Lodge in Virginia, aquatic professionals from all over will take a deep dive into an ongoing effort vital to the public health – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). The WAHC has long hosted the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC), and this year the conference will devote an entire series of talks to discussion of the MAHC. Presentations on efforts to develop and promote adoption of the MAHC will feature speakers from CDC, CMAHC officials, and operators directly involved in MAHC implementation. Douglas Sackett, Executive Director of the CMAHC, and Dr. Michael Beach, Associate Director for Healthy Water with CDC, will also host a MAHC listening session where there will be a review and discussion on how the MAHC is influencing aquatics. Additionally, they will host a MAHC session dedicated to air quality in indoor aquatic facilities and how the MAHC and CMAHC are the vehicles to change aquatic facility design and operation to improve indoor air quality. A topic that has gained momentum in recent conferences, MAHC sessions will dovetail with talks in other tracks, including a series of presentations on improving water and air quality in aquatic facilities. During these talks, participants will explore the latest scientific findings on filtration, disinfection by products, and preventing chemical exposures in facilities. The WAHC presents a unique opportunity for facility managers and pool operators to compare notes with scientific researchers and public health officials and work towards a more nuanced understanding of their shared role in safeguarding public health.

Luxembourg Pool Roof Features Long Wooden Elements When the Cents Sports Centre in Luxembourg was being designed, German architectural firm Auer Weber incorporated an unusual design feature within the roof structure of the new indoor swimming pool. The ceiling was built using extremely long wooden elements – extending up to 23.75 metres – which enabled long-spans and an attractively designed roof. The key for making this possible was using fast, light and green Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) products produced by Metsä Wood. The suspended floating wooden ceiling was structured with slim ribs and an above average web height. The structural design and calculations were done by engineers Knippers Helbig, and the implementation was carried out by specialist wood construction company Holzbau Amann. Use of Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL Q-panels made the desired appearance and structure possible. The dimensions of the roof are impressive. The goal of the architecture was to create a wooden rib ceiling with deep cassettes with long spans to create the large spatial volume.

The dimensional stability of the Kerto LVL web was a great advantage here and the structure was produced with a height of 1.1 metres and a thickness of only 75mm. Hendrik Pfeffinger, the Project Manager at Holzbau Amann, explained: “We went beyond standards for the ratio of thickness and the height of the beams, so special solutions had to be established which would on the one hand meet the requirements of Knippers Helbig, while conforming to the structural analyses and approvals in Luxembourg.” For the implementation of these slim dimensions, the Q-panels were virtually predestined for the job thanks to their high loadbearing capacity. The wooden roof elements were prefabricated at Holzbau Amann’s factory and delivered by extra-long trucks to the construction site. Although the elements are almost 24 metres in length, their installation was quick and required only two carpenters on site. Metsä Wood +358 104 605 www.metsawood.com

Penetron Technology Waterproofs Tunisian Aqua Park Facilities The new Rayar Aqua Park – a waterpark of pools, a kayaking river and water slides – was inaugurated in July 2019, in time for the autumn tourist season in Tunisia. Part of the LTI Mahdia Beach Hotel in the resort city of Mahdia, the project contractor asked the local Penetron team for a durable waterproofing solution to protect the concrete structures permanently. Construction began last year on the Rayar Aqua Park, the newest addition to the LTI Mahdia Beach Hotel complex. “Because the Rayar Aqua Park was directly next to the Mediterranean Ocean, the high groundwater at the construction site was a major concern for Batimod, the project contractor,” explained Akrout Hamdi. “Thanks to our success with many similar seaside projects at nearby Monastir, we were able to show the contractor how the Penetron System would be a very effective solution.” Penetron products are formulated to react with key concrete components to

28 August 2019 SPN 26+28_SPN_August_19_World_News.indd 28

produce an integral crystalline formation. Penetron-treated concrete is vastly less permeable, more resistant to moisture and chemicals, and has a self-healing capability when compared to regular concrete. “The service life of Penetron-treated concrete is about three times that of conventional concrete,” added Akrout Hamdi. Super Beton, the ready-mix supplier for the Rayar Aqua Park project, added Penetron Admix to the concrete mix destined for all the swimming pools and the river section. While Peneplug, a rapid-setting, crystalline-based compound was used to plug the active leaks resulting from the localised hydrostatic pressure. Other Penetron products were also applied to all the concrete surfaces exposed to the outdoors. “The Penetron System was successfully used on all the concrete structures of the Rayar Aqua Park to provide a high level of durability,” concluded Akrout Hamdi. “The park opened on time and on budget.”

Standards, Courses, Guidance And Awards! With a lot of work taking place behind the scenes, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights some key industry developments happening in the months ahead

W

ith the summer holidays now upon us, this is a time of year where hopefully the sun is shining, and the industry is busy looking after its customers, and everyone is enjoying their pools, hot tubs and other wellness products, such as sauna and steam. While others relax and enjoy a well-earned break, behind the scenes, there is a huge amount of work going on in the industry to continue the improvement of items such as British and European standards, industry courses and guidance. SPATA is lucky to have the support of Will Dando (the current BSPF President) and also of Patrick Thorpe (the current BSPF Company Secretary) along with Howard Gosling (the current SPATEX Chairman), and all three are members of the SPATA Technical Committee. Work is ongoing on developing a European standard for domestic pools and their environmental impact (in Will’s case) and public spas (for Patrick and Howard). When these latest standards are ready, they will be added (at the relevant renewal time) to the custom package of 25 standards that are available to members via British Standards Online (BSOL) at the cost of only £75 + VAT per year. Moving onto industry courses, I have previously highlighted the great work undertaken by some SPATA members in producing courses on heat pumps, liners and sauna and steam. It is hoped to run at least one more each of these courses this year (subject to demand). It is also hoped

to have an additional course this year that will be piloted at some point in 2020 on Environmental Control and Ductwork. BISHTA also continues to provide industry courses on electrical final connections, water hygiene management and there is also an agreement with our American colleagues at the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) to offer the Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) course. The Hot Tub Site Surveyor course is still undergoing some updates, and other courses are being planned to assist the holiday park operators and Environmental Health Officers (EHO’s). Industry guidance is also very important and, in this issue, there is an article on the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) in relation to in-situ generated biocides (in this case – ozone). I am very grateful for the time invested by Mike Prince at the European Ozone Trade Association (EuOTA) in producing the article and irrespective of whether members use in-site generated ozone or not, they are advised to check any products that claim to be biocides to see if they are permitted to be sold in the UK. In terms of other education opportunities, BISHTA and SPATA will be offering current and prospective members the chance to attend the annual Information and Networking Days in October. This year, there are days in the north and south to help members reduce their travelling time. The dates in the south will again be held in Andover on Wednesday 2 (BISHTA) and Thursday 3 (SPATA). The meetings in the north will be held in Doncaster on Wednesday 23 (BISHTA) and Thursday 24 (SPATA). For more details, please look on the respective BISHTA and SPATA websites and updates will be provided in BISHTA and SPATA News. Now that the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards are open online for BISHTA

and SPATA members to enter, can I wish everyone good luck in getting their entries submitted. For more details on why the awards are worth entering, please see the article by Sallie Leslie-Golding on page 35. Some British Pool & Hot Tub award winners have been shortlisted for entry into the European Pool & Spa Awards 2019 which will be announced at aquanale in Cologne on Thursday 7 November. Congratulations to all of the companies that have been shortlisted, please see pages 32 to 34 for more details. The BSPF is heavily involved, not only in the UK but overseas, with support for colleagues in Europe through the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) and further afield through the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA). The next WAPSA meeting is scheduled for Monday 14 October (the day before the Piscina & Wellness Show) in Barcelona. The UK is expected to be represented by some of the Chairs of the companies that are BSPF members. Preparations from the SPATEX team for the 2020 show are well underway, and you may be interested to know more about the SPATEX Foundation, a new initiative to use some of the funds generated from the show to help the wider industry. It is hoped that there will be a variety of applications under various categories (training, education, research, and other support). POOL & SPA INDUSTRY BACKGROUND The primary purpose of EUSA is to support the development of a stronger and more prosperous business community throughout Europe through: Lobbying on behalf of the industry, on topics such as the development of European standards (thus promoting safety). Promoting the industry and success in the EUSA Awards is recognition from the industry for the quality of the work being entered, and it also celebrates the excellence within the wet leisure industry across Europe. The EUSA Awards are open to all National Associations that are EUSA Members, to send in their entries. Each entry submitted by an EUSA member must comply with the relevant National Association Standards, where applicable, and with European standards (where applicable), they may be disqualified if this is not the case. Judges for the EUSA Awards will assess the entries on their visual impact, innovation

The BSPF is proud to nominate BISHTA and SPATA members for the EUSA awards to be held in Germany later this year. This European spotlight is a fantastic opportunity for companies to raise their profile at home and abroad” and aesthetic appeal. The identity of each entry will not be given to the judges; this means that judges can vote for any entry, based on which they believe to be the best. The EUSA judges will aim to have a Gold, Silver and Bronze award winner in each category, subject to there being sufficient entries, of suitable quality.

REPRESENTING BRITAIN On behalf of BISHTA and SPATA, the BSPF wishes the shortlisted entries from both trade associations ‘the best of luck’ in this year’s competition. Chris Hayes (BSPF Managing

Director) commented: “The BSPF is proud to nominate BISHTA and SPATA members for the EUSA awards to be held in Germany later this year. This European spotlight is a fantastic opportunity for companies to raise their profile at home and abroad. The quality of shortlisted entries across Europe in 2019 is exceptionally high, and the bar is rising year after year; we look forward to finding out whether any companies from the British Isles will be amongst the winners in November and we congratulate all of the British shortlisted entries on their accomplishment in the competition so far.” Domestic Indoor Pools – Whitewaters

Boost Your Turnover With Award Success! Entry to the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards provides trade association members with fantastic marketing potential

W

inning an industry award is always going to be good for business – it’s great publicity and an endorsement of your company, and it can have a great impact on your turnover – but it’s what you do with your awards which makes the real difference to turnover. If you can maximise the use of your PR and Marketing channels after winning an award, you could see some fantastic results. A great example this year, is from awardwinning and BISHTA and SPATA members; Cannings H2O, who were awarded the 2019 Dick Millward Trophy for the Pool Contractor of the Year, along with receiving four Gold and two Bronze awards. Managing Director, Bradley Cannings and his team have ‘grabbed the bull by the horns’ since winning their awards in January this year. They scheduled a range of posts across all of their social media channels, as well as picking up on the press release distribution, which Sallie Leslie-Golding as PR & Marketing Manager for BISHTA and A SPATA, sends out on behalf of each award-winner following the awards ceremony. The follow-up on the press release by Cannings H2O secured them coverage in several local publications. This included an article featured in Exeter Living Magazine, which distributes 7,000 hand-delivered copies to key homes in the area, targeting properties valued at more than £500,000 along with 3,000 copies circulated to leading hotels, chic boutiques, coffee shops, gastropubs, estate agents and other local businesses in pinpointed affluent areas in and around Exeter. This type of coverage also provides BISHTA and SPATA with the chance to share news from award-winners through their digital channels, raises awareness to consumers and provides yet another great reason why they

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 35_SPN_Aug_19_BSPF_Awards.indd 35

should choose a BISHTA or SPATA member for their project.

YOU’VE GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT Award entry is now live online, and this is your chance to celebrate your successes. Even when business is good, and turnover is healthy, you should never stop marketing your business, and this is where the strength of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards can help showcase your company and give it the spotlight it deserves. Being the longest-running and most wellestablished industry awards, the annual awards plays a crucial role in promoting the industry, not only to the trade but more importantly, to a wider consumer audience. Judging comes directly from top industry specialists who regularly work with BISHTA and SPATA. Entries are also anonymously judged, based on the quality of the entry and fairly awarded using a points system. Therefore, winning a British Pool & Hot Tub Award is a mark of excellence from the wet leisure industry. These awards have been designed to appeal to a wide cross-section of the consumer press.

Year on year, the coverage for the award-winners (both locally and nationally) is gaining more and more momentum. The British Pool & Hot Tub Awards are run for the benefit of promoting and celebrating the excellence of BISHTA and SPATA members (nationwide and overseas) endorsing companies who strive for the best. Entry to the 2020 Awards closes on Friday 28 October 2019, but don’t delay, if you have entries ready, we urge you to enter them now. You can enter via the members’ area of the BISHTA and SPATA websites by clicking on the Online Entry button or under the Trade section. If you are interested in joining BISHTA or SPATA, or want to book your seats for the Industry Gala Evening, call 01264 356210/1 or visit www.bishta.co.uk or www.spata.co.uk

The Impact Of The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) As the Chairman of the European Ozone Trade Association (EuOTA), Mike Prince gives an overview of the impact of BPR on the swimming pool and spa market for in-situ generated products

I

n 2013, the BPR came into force and brought in-situ generated biocides under the scope of this regulation. I will focus on Ozone in order not to confuse the reader, but a similar story can be told for other in-situ generated products such as Chlorinators and Brominators. A biocidal product is defined as any substance, or mixture produced to prevent the action of, or otherwise exerting a controlling effect on, any harmful organism. The starting point, therefore, is, do you supply a product that makes such claims and therefore falls within the scope of this regulation? For the swimming pool and spa market, it is important to note; there are exemptions, for example, UV in itself is considered a physical treatment and not within scope of the BPR, whereas UV that generates ozone is considered generating an active substance and falls within the scope of the regulation. The use of UV as a photocatalyst to produce hydroxyl radicals is also within the scope of the regulation. The BPR is a two-stage process. The first stage is the submission of the Active Substance Dossier. This covers approximately 45 sub-categories and encompasses information covering topics such as efficacy, health and safety, ecotoxicology and environmental fate analysis, for example. The second stage is where a submission is made describing how the active substance is used, i.e. the disinfection of swimming pool water. This is referred to as the product application stage. This stage can be summarised as ‘does it do what we claim?’ and, ‘is it safe when we use it?’. To enable companies some time to comply

with the Regulation, a transition period was introduced. The nature of the transition period varies depending upon whether a substance falls under either Article 93 or Article 95. Ozone falls under Article 93 and was given a transition deadline of September 2016. If no Ozone Dossier had been submitted by this date, ozone generators would have been withdrawn from the market in September 2017. As two ozone dossiers were submitted by EURO3ZON and EuOTA before the September 2016 deadline and therefore supporting the active substance, the deadline date for the industry now becomes the submission date of the product applications (stage 2) which is 18 months after the Ozone Dossier (stage 1) becomes approved. Two key questions arise: • What is the approval date for stage 1: the Ozone Dossier? • And whose product is going through the approval process? The second question is relatively easy to answer. If you look on the EuOTA (www. euota.org – refer to OTF membership) or EURO3ZON (www.euro3zon.org) websites, you can see the manufacturers listed who are participating. If your manufacturer is not listed, it is strongly recommended you seek the reassurance of compliance, especially if the supply route emanates

The unfortunate issue with the BPR is that it has been written for conventional chemicals. Ozone, as an in-situ generated chemical does not conform to the accepted test standards for many chemicals” 36 August 2019 SPN 36_SPN_August_19_BPR.indd 36

outside the European Union. The regulation is enforced by the Competent Authority in each country and in the UK, this is the HSE. For information, the penalty for breach of the regulation is an unlimited fine and up to two years imprisonment, depending upon the severity of the breach. Currently, BREXIT does not impact on this regulation. The first question is more difficult to answer. The unfortunate issue with the BPR is that it has been written for conventional chemicals. Ozone, as an in-situ generated chemical does not conform to the accepted test standards for many chemicals. This is primarily due to its property of not lasting, hence its in-situ generation. Adaptations to standards are therefore required. These adaptations require evaluation and acceptance by the regulators. Regulators are notoriously slow and penned in by precedent, and this inevitably causes a delay. These adaptations and evaluations cost significant amounts of money. Both EuOTA and EURO3ZON are quoting costs of over two million euros for their dossier submissions. Incurring such costs have historically had a detrimental effect on many manufacturers, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs). To reduce these costs, consortiums have been formed to share the costs of compliance. It will be those consortiums that have invested the money for compliance that will police the market. The consequence of non-compliance is eventual removal from the market. Key questions are: Where does the liability stand for this? What recourse do you have for purchasing or selling something that subsequently becomes illegal? How is the warranty of the product affected? Should it be declared illegal during the warranty period? These are all questions that need answering. This is a Regulation not to be ignored! EuOTA 01264 369923 www.euota.org

In this edition Luke Griffiths, Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at STA’s awarding organisation Safety Training Awards, shares his top five tips for ensuring bather safety over the summer months

5 Top Tips For Summer Safety

W

ith the summer now in full swing and temperatures soaring, the use of swimming pools will hit annual highs, and this increase in the number of bathers creates a whole new set of challenges for pool operators, both large and small. These include:

1

PROGRAMMING

Programming the summer swim timetable should ensure that the bather loads are not exceeded and pools can cope with the increased demand. When setting timetables, operators can consider putting on different sessions to encourage sessions with lower bather loads or factoring in rest periods, where the pool can be emptied of bathers and allowed some time to recover before the next session.

2

THE THREAT OF CRYPTOSPORIDIUM

The threat of bacteria such as Cryptosporidium is prevalent all year round, but with more bathers especially with young children over the summer seasonal peak it’s a critical point to note. Due to this influx of fair weather bathers it’s important that operators reinforce key messages to educate bathers of when not to swim. Operators should always be appropriately prepared and have procedures in place for how to deal with hazardous contaminants, particularly runny or broken up faeces. If we can keep Cryptosporidium OUT of the pool in the first place, we can prevent outbreaks which makes education and hygiene vital. However, we can’t rely on this alone so we need to ensure appropriate plant and procedures are in place to protect bathers in the event of an incident.

3

PROMOTING SAFE, HEALTHY AND HYGIENIC PRACTICES

Swimming should be a healthy, enjoyable

experience but in addition to poor design, a lack of hygiene practices can result in dangerous pollution in the pools and changing areas. Pollution from bathers can never be stopped completely − however, prevention is better than cure. By following simple design recommendations and implementing reasonable pre-swim hygiene procedures, the quality of the water and air can be significantly improved. This policy should be understood by all tiers of staff and actively promoted to all users.

4

CLEANLINESS

With the increased bathers it can be a constant battle during the summer months to maintain the cleanliness of changing rooms, pools and pool surrounds. Ensuring an appropriate cleaning regime is in place that works with the pool timetable is essential. Contamination can be picked up on bathers feet in the changing rooms and transferred to the pools. General cleanliness should be monitored throughout opening times with deeper cleans programmed in at least daily. As for the pool tank itself, it is likely there will be an increase in physical pollution such as hair, dirt etc, so ensuring that the pool is swept and vacuumed, at least daily, is essential to improve the appearance but mostly reduce the chances of biological growth on the tank.

5

DILUTION AND BACKWASHING

More bathers requires more dilution. Dilution is most important in relation to control of unwanted chlorine and other chemical by-products. Regular dilution via

With the summer now in full swing and temperatures soaring, the use of swimming pools will hit annual highs, and this increase in the number of bathers creates a whole new set of challenges for pool operators...” 38 August 2019 SPN 38_SPN_August_19_STA.indd 38

backwashing (and dumping if necessary) are essential in the maintenance of good water quality. It is recommended to replace 30 litres of water per bather, so 100 bathers equals 3,000 litres. Backwashing can be carried out according to pressure differential or fixed time, but it should be done at least weekly. Backwashing should not be carried out when the pool is in use. Time should be allowed for the filter bed to re-compact following backwashing before the pool opens for use, this is normally one third of the turnover period (usually 30 to 120 minutes). Hence, why recommendations are to backwash at the end of the day. This assists in the overnight removal of any particulate breakthrough resulting from backwashing that might include Cryptosporidium oocysts. Backwashing is not recommended during the bathing period for the following reasons: • Filtering ability will be reduced until the filter media re-compacts • Pool water depths may drop and if jumping or diving takes place at reduced depths this could be dangerous • During backwashing, disinfection will cease and may reduce to zero in busy pools • It is likely that the temperature will be lowered by incoming ‘make up’ water. Luke points out that this list is by no means definitive, but what does underpin all of this is the importance of professional pool plant training. STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification has CIMSPA professional endorsement for meeting the employer-led pool plant operative professional standard, and covers all what operators need to ensure safe, clear and hygienic water practices in pools, spas and interactive play features. MANUFACTURED IN-HOUSE

The Complete A To Z Of Pool Requirements With in-house manufacturing providing a number of benefits, in this issue, we take a closer look at the products Plastica Pools manufactures at its factory in East Sussex

P

lastica Pools are proud to be a leading UK manufacturer, in fact over 80% of its business is from competitively priced, top-quality, British made items. The company manufactures a variety of products for the pool trade and commercial customers from its 13,000 square metre factory in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. Everything is produced using an impressive combination of state-of-the-art equipment with handcrafted parts by an experienced and dedicated team. The end results are primarily distributed around the UK, with some sales overseas. Founder and Managing Director Edward Campbell-Salmon said: “One of the great things about manufacturing in-house is we can pass on our cost savings to the customer, who can also be reassured they are getting a first-class product.”

PUMPS A great example of this is the Argonaut and its smaller counterpart the AG Pump. They have been a resounding success with all wet end components made in the UK and assembled in the Plastica factory. The packaging has been greatly improved with all pumps encased in specially moulded foam to guarantee that every unit arrives at its final destination in perfect condition.

POOL SURROUND Plastica also offer a bespoke service on all their products. For example, handrails or ladders can be custom made to fit a client’s exact requirements. Plastica has focused on quality and safety with its 43mm 316 grade stainless steel ladders. The tube conforms to British Standards, as do the stainless-steel treads and double top tread. Everything is moulded in-house and supplied with their own custom designed treads and fixtures.

LINERS The material used for Plastica’s liners is impregnated with algaecide and anti-oxidants giving a 5-year pro-rata guarantee. Plus, the company’s domestic liners also come with an embossed serial number for efficient quoting and production when ordering a replacement. Plastica’s Extreme reinforced on-site lining is ideal for new pools, refurbs on leaking concrete or tiled pools and is a durable solution for the commercial sector.

COMMERCIAL COVERS & REELS From Olympic sized competition pools to challenging freeform fun pools, Plastica have the expertise and space to produce and then install commercial covers and reel systems across the country. There are unique benefits to their UK quality covers and reels as Edward explained: “Our covers have hemmed edges, reinforced leading edges and double welded seams down the length of pool cover, rather than across the width. This all results in less stress on the covers to prevent fraying, delamination and tearing. We choose to work with stainless steel for our reel systems to really maximise strength, longevity and ease of maintenance for our clients.” Plastica’s commercial covers retain the heat, which is the most effective means of reducing an indoor swimming pool’s energy consumption.

Fitting the right cover on a pool will see a reduction in energy bills of up to £20,500 per annum (figures based on a 2011 study of a 25m x 12m pool at 2018 prices). Depending on the type of reel system chosen, a payback period as short as 12 months can be expected.

WATER TREATMENT No pool is complete without the right water treatment to maintain it. Within Plastica’s premises, they have a dedicated water treatment department. All their chemicals are sourced by their very own Water Treatment Manager, who travels worldwide to find the best quality proven chemicals for the company’s Relax range. This same quality product is available with an own-brand label too. Plastica’s in-house design team can create clear and concise labelling, making an attractive and uniform addition to any showroom, with support posters and sales leaflets – just ask your sales rep for what you require! Don’t forget Plastica have their very own water treatment experts on hand to answer any questions. Contact Plastica to find out more about their products and training on spa and pool water testing.

UNBEATABLE LEAD TIMES Finally, all the above is supplied within minimum lead times. Domestic pool liners and covers are manufactured within a 3-5 day turnaround and a healthy stock of Plastica produced products are available with same day despatch. Overall, Plastica has every swimming pool need covered and offer topquality products, produced by experienced staff with exceptional lead times. Plastica 01424 857802 www.plasticapools.net

WANT TO UPGRADE YOUR FILTRATION AND DON’T HAVE THE ROOM? Ceramiflo offer a compact solution that can fit into any plant room Takes up just 1/3 of the floor space normally required by sand filters Fully automatic system provides superior quality pool water ALVASTON HALL HOTEL & SPA Space was very limited in their small plant room and the high rate filters needed to be replaced. Ceramiflo was selected as the perfect solution. “The ceramic filtration system is a breath of fresh air compared to traditional systems. Its 3 main benefits for me are the energy saving it gives us which helps to reduce our carbon footprint which is a big area of focus for Warner Leisure, its reduction in labour hours that are normally required with the backwashing and maintenance etc, and the water quality is second to none – crystal clear.” Steve Hinton Leisure Manager, Alvaston Hall

Ceramiflo – An Ideal Choice For When Space Is An Issue In this edition, we put the spotlight on Ceramiflo, the ceramic microfiltration system with a footprint of only a third of that of traditional sand filters

The main pool water was being filtered using the original horizontal filter which had reached the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced

T

otal Pool Filtration has teamed up with the Danish Company Provital to market the revolutionary Ceramiflo swimming pool filtration system in the UK. The ceramic microfiltration system has already been installed in many pools across northern Europe, with some fantastic results. The successful application of membrane technology to swimming pool water has allowed Ceramiflo to gain an advantage over more traditional filtration methods such as sand and glass. The Ceramiflo system can consistently filter down to 3 microns, which is sufficient to improve any cryptosporidium management strategy. As well as improved water quality, it offers many cost savings for potential new pools and existing pools. For potential new builds, installing a Ceramiflo system will help save on construction costs as it requires a much smaller plant room. This is a direct result of it taking up 30% of the footprint of sand filters and also its need for less headroom, a smaller balance tank and no backwash holding tank. In addition to this, significant savings can also be made on water and energy bills as a third of the water is needed for the backwash. For existing pools, the Ceramiflo system is an ideal solution for plant rooms that are tight for space and where balance tanks are undersized and a great example of this was at Pontardawe – a community leisure centre run by Celtic Leisure Trust on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council. The centre has

a 25 metre, 6 lane main pool and a smaller teaching pool. The main pool water was being filtered using the original horizontal filter and in 2017, an examination of it showed that it had reached the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced. The problem was that there was no way that new steel or fibreglass filters could be placed within the plant room without major building work, as the only access was down a narrow passageway. Celtic Leisure decided to look at using the Danish ceramic membrane filters marketed by Total Pool Filtration and they knew these filters were being widely used in Scandinavia. Ceramiflo filters were more expensive than conventional sand filters but were fully automatic and had superior performance. However, the main advantage was that they were modular and could be assembled in the plant room. In addition, they also had a much smaller footprint than the existing sand filters so they could be installed in a small, available space whilst keeping the old sand filter operating, meaning there would be no interruption to service and no loss of revenue. A six-membrane system was installed in February 2017. Sections of the new system were carried in by Total Pool Filtrations’ installation team and assembled in what was effectively a passageway. The new system is completely automatic and requires no input from the on site staff at all. It is continuously monitored over the

internet by Total Pool Filtration. Speaking about the system, Nathaniel Davis, Manager at the Pontardawe Leisure Centre said: “Since we installed the Ceramiflo filters, the water has been absolutely sparkling. Also, we have dramatically reduced both the water usage and chemical usage. Because the units are fully automatic there is no need for staff to backwash the filters after bathing for the day has been completed saving overtime.” Anthony Pugh of Celtic Leisure added: “Part of the reason for choosing the Ceramiflo filters is that if we get the go ahead for a new pool at Pontardawe, the filters can be stripped down and re-assembled at the new pool.” Total Pool Filtration 01829 740290 www.totalpoolfiltration.co.uk

KEY CERAMIFLO BENEFITS The benefits that Ceramiflo achieves over traditional sand filtration include: • Footprint of only 1/3 compared to sand filters so plant rooms can be much smaller • Save up to 70% of water • Save up to 50% of chemicals • Fully automatic backwashing, so no on site operative required • Remotely monitored • Better performance than sand filters with 3-micron filtration as opposed to 10 micron • No degradation in performance after backwashing • Lower energy usage due to low pressure drop across the filters • Crystal clear pool water (0.2 NTU)

WATER TESTING

Every Drop Matters So Let’s Make It Count! Thanks to numerous recent innovations, the testing of water in pools and spas has become more accurate, sophisticated and convenient than ever before. It’s a sector which doesn’t stand still for long and embraces the latest advances in technology. The result – numerous innovative products that have literally revolutionised the water testing process. With the testing of water always a high priority, in this issue, we take a closer look at the available products By Andrea Hartshorne

W

hen the weather gets hot, the last thing the owners of a variety of wet leisure products want to do is spend unnecessary time and energy testing and monitoring water when there’s fun to be had and cooling off to be taken advantage of. In addition to the beach, hot summer weather sends people in their droves to pools, lidos, spas and splash parks and whether it’s in a domestic or commercial setting, both users and owners need to be able to trust that the cooling waters that are being enjoyed are in the best possible condition and are safe for their users. Owners and operators know and understand the importance of having clear, sparkling water for their guests to enjoy but there are still ways many companies can improve on the monitoring and implementation of their testing procedures. Considerable money and time is spent developing and producing more efficient and user-friendly systems. For commercial operators in particular, where there is the possibility of infection, only the best products and procedures are good enough as down time or bad press should an infection be allowed to develop can spell disaster to both revenue streams and reputation. Due to the large footfall hot weather produces, correct testing and monitoring is imperative to ensure algae, bacteria and general contaminates like cosmetics, sun tan lotion and other easily transported oils and dirt are prevented from causing problems or harm. From domestic hot tubs to Olympic-sized swimming pools, wet leisure products are major investments for their owners and they need to be kept in the best possible condition – therefore having the correct products to test water conditions is essential and in this issue, we take a look at just some of the solutions.

SEE CLEARLY WITH PRODUCTS FROM PALINTEST As a long-term distributor of Palintest water testing products to the wet leisure industry, Golden Coast provides a range of photometers, electrochemical sensors and visual test kits to provide pool owners with clear indications of water quality. “Palintest are very innovative and the products are sophisticated,” said Mitchel Percy, Technical Sales at Golden Coast. “The wide range offers a lot of flexibility to owners depending on what type of pool they have, whether its indoors or outdoors, domestic or commercial.” Historically, visual testing kits have been popular for use with domestic pools. They offer cost-effective, easy-to-use methods to test a range of parameters. But digital products have been on the rise for some time, due to their much greater accuracy and the ability to test for varied chemicals, including chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and pH levels. Photometers such as the Palintest Pooltest

One of the major developments in the industry over the last few years has been in the development of chemistries. This has partly been driven by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) and the recent REACH classification that boric is now considered hazardous as it may damage fertility and may damage the unborn child. The Lovibond® team of chemists have worked tirelessly to remove all traces of boric acid in their reagents used for pool and spa water testing. It has now proven possible to achieve what once seemed impossible: reagents that are easy to dose; reagents that are safe; reagents that have a long and stable shelflife; reagents that are extremely accurate; reagents that provide reproducible results; and reagents that are environmentally friendly and 100% free of boric acid in compliance with DIN EN ISO 7393-2. Further developments have occurred in the production of the tablets themselves. The latest machinery has now been installed to ensure each tablet is hermetically sealed, protecting them against challenging environmental conditions. This packaging keeps each tablet in perfect condition, right up until the time it is needed by the user. Maintaining these quality standards means Lovibond® reagents are guaranteed for a minimum of five years, some for as long as ten years. The new aluminium foil blister packaging has now been applied to all the reagents used for pool and spa water testing.

WATER TESTING iOS® / AndroidTM apps and Bluetooth® do not exactly represent new technology but they have seen increased adoption in the pool and spa industry. The Lovibond® team is no exception. ‘PoolM8’, the free app to determine the Langelier Index or ‘Balanced Water’ has been downloaded millions of times around the world, helping operators maintain the quality of the water and share results. Bluetooth® data transfer has also been introduced to the newer series of photometers. The MD 110 range and the PM 630 include connectivity to the AquaLX® app, again available free of charge, which offers the possibility for data management, analysis and export.

parameters plus the colour chart to compare is usually divided in steps, which sometimes makes it difficult to make a match. The new FlexiTester of Water-i.d. allows the user more flexibility. The tester itself is used like a regular pooltester. Water is scooped, a tablet is added and the water develops a colour. Differing from a pooltester, where the colour is compared to a chart, the FlexiTester comes with colour sticks that are inserted into the tester. The colour is graduated and not in steps like on a pooltester, so sliding the stick up and down ensures a perfect match. Additionally, by having the colour chart on a stick, the user is not limited to only a few parameters. Water-i.d. offers sticks for up to 25 different parameters, including the most common ones for pools, such as pH, chlorine, active oxygen etc. When purchasing the FlexiTester, the user

can choose which parameter-sticks and reagents are included, whilst always having the option to order other parameter-sticks and reagents later on. Water-i.d. also recently launched an inexpensive photometer that everyone can afford! The new PoolLab 1.0 Photometer is easy to use, gives accurate results of 11 pool parameters (tested on 3 wavelengths) and even comes with Bluetooth, a powerful app and software which both synchronise via a cloud server, free of charge. Test results can be downloaded via the app/software and individual water treatment chemicals can be stored and used to let software and app calculate a dosage recommendation for pool or spa water. The built-in cuvette can be changed, if required. The PoolLab is waterproof to IP68 and simply needs to dipped in the pool to scoop the water used to perform the test. Six buttons allow direct access to all 11 test procedures.

Hydrotherapy Pool Gets Top Marks Chester-Le-Street, County Durham

he Heel & Toe Children’s Charity provides therapy to youngsters with cerebral palsey and other disabilities across the north east. Last year, they commenced building a hydrotherapy centre in Perkinsville, County Durham on the site of a derelict social club that the charity had purchased. The project was two years on the drawing board while funds were raised for the project. Heel & Toe needed a pool that was functional for both the children and physiotherapists using it, but it also needed to feature the charity’s colours whilst retaining the aesthetics of a regular spa pool. After discussing their requirements with several hydrotherapy suppliers, after providing free of charge CGI drawings, the pool contract was awarded to Sunderland-based Whitewaters and a full design was quickly agreed.

The resulting 6.5m x 4m reinforced concrete skimmer pool strikes the perfect balance between functionality and fun. Finishes used on the pool are robust, low maintenance and contemporary, but stimulating and inviting. Great attention to detail is evident in the execution of the design, including the distinctive red foot logo, and even the main drain grilles are colour matched to suit. Whitewaters used more muted and sophisticated tones in the finishes outside of the pool to avoid the area becoming too ‘gaudy’. Wide and shallow steps both inside and outside the pool allow for easy access, and the pool is designed with a 400mm raised edge to make supervision and support of bathers more comfortable. The limited budget did not allow for a wide range of features, but two large jets were included in the pool to aid therapy by providing moving water on demand. Working within a relatively small existing building was problematic

Similarly, the plantroom space was extremely tight and once on site it was discovered that the original 1,200mm filter could not be accommodated. Whitewaters managed to fit two 800mm filters in its place, although they did have to make a small compromise on the filtration rate. Doug Long, Chief Executive at the charity said: “We are extremely pleased with what has been achieved at the centre and I am sure from the photographs you will agree.” Judges at this year’s British Pool & Hot Tub Awards approved of the project too as it picked up the Gold Award in the ‘Special Requirement Pool of the Year’ category at the annual event held during the SPATEX exhibition in Coventry.

Lighting The Dream Over recent years, lighting technology and know-how has developed at a fantastic rate and a wide range of wet leisure facilities have benefited from the advances that have been made. Innovative fibre optic and LED lighting solutions are now enhancing both commercial and domestic environments across the country and in this issue, we focus on just some of the illuminating options that are brightening up the market By Andrea Hartshorne

ith a variety of options available for a wide range of budgets and settings, it’s no exaggeration to say that the current lighting technology has literally transformed the look of many of today’s pool and spa installations in both domestic and commercial settings. Highly efficient LED’s have rightly become the accepted choice of professionals across a variety of projects and their use has meant that the plain yet functional white lights with the occasional coloured filter thrown in – an accepted norm not that long ago – are increasingly being seen as a memory of how things once were. And it’s easy to see why – a mix of cleverly installed lighting can provide dramatic effects inside a pool or spa and can also be used to externally to soften walls and other finishes too. Whole areas can be improved with thoughtful and imaginative lighting, providing both safety and style to complement the surroundings. With plenty of choices available on the market from a variety of manufacturers, this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the many solutions which are lighting the way.

ASTRALPOOL LUMIPLUS – THE LED SOLUTION FOR ALL TYPES OF POOLS With options for public, commercial and residential pools, AstralPool’s LumiPlus is an extensive family of underwater spotlights. The complete range is made of high-quality LEDs and electronic components and is manufactured entirely in the EU to European quality standards. The LumiPlus family delivers greater energy efficiency and high

performance spotlights with built-in top quality lighting (TQL) technology. There’s enhanced energy efficiency in a pool thanks to the use of LumiPlus DC lamps and spotlights run from a direct current power source (24 V DC). There’s also unmatched control over all products in the range following the addition of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept by Fluidra Connect. Offering maximum flexibility, the new family of LumiPlus Flexi spotlights – FlexiNiche, FlexiSlim and FlexiRapid – is characterised by its great adaptability to any type of new-build and existing liner or concrete pool and can be fitted in a niche, on the surface or to bushing. Ideal for public/ hotel pools (V2) and residential pools (V1), they have IP68 protection rating. LumiPlus lamps deliver a lighting performance up to three times higher than those currently available on the market and provide greater energy efficiency too. Their enhanced luminous fl ux and optical efficiency will bring out the best in any facility. Thanks to the technology used, light can be evenly distributed across a pool. LED white light lamps are ideal for replacing PAR56 300 W halogen lamps as they save over 90% in power consumption and have a service life of up to 100 times longer. Finally, there’s the LumiPlus Mini and Micro which are ideal for small spaces. ‘Spotlight’ is a new range of mini and micro LED lights with greater intensity and higher quality of light plus better energy efficiency. Their design now makes for a more seamless fit in pools and they are easier to install than ever before, they are suitable for installation in steps, bushings, niches and spas.

SEE THE LIGHT WITH CERTIKIN! First created in the 1970s, Certikin’s PU9 underwater pool lights are an industry standard and the latest LED technology has enhanced their usability, providing longer life expectancy and vastly reduced running costs. Certikin also offer colour change lighting to give customers options on mood and for more high-tech properties, DMX bulbs can be used with home management systems. 2007 saw the launch of the Certikin PU6 Quick Change lights. These utilise the traditional PAR56 bulb shape but have a ‘guts’ system that could be disassembled by hand without the use of tools, making bulb changes even easier. The PU6 also benefits from a smaller niche and less exposed plastic. As with the PU9, LED technology and the various options have been fully absorbed into the PU6 range. What’s more, any existing Certikin PU9 or PU6 light can also be easily upgraded to the company’s LED bulbs. However, if a design statement is needed or there’s a preference for mini LED lights for a modern look, then Certikin can help with that too. The new, highly efficient PU2 Mini PushFit RGBW LED light is easy to install, has a high output and the neatest of finishes. Suitable for new build concrete pools only, the full 316 grade stainless steel body fits directly into a standard 1.5 inch pipe, leaving just the 2mm thick stainless steel facia on display in the pool. Each light requires a receiving controller. Just one power supply and Wi-Fi controller will operate up to 26 lights. The controller connects via a free downloadable app

NEW AND IMPROVED – THE FLOWBRIGHT PLUS FlowBright Plus is the latest product available from Hydro-flux Aqua Products. The original FlowBright – a revolutionary water-powered swimming pool light that generates its own electricity – was introduced to the market in 2018 and while its manufacturers could not have dreamt for a better reception, they did learn the limitations of the current model and what was needed to take FlowBright to the next level. Hydro-flux needed to find a way to generate more output, increase the flowrate range, and most importantly, enable FlowBright to

CASTING A HEALTHY LIGHT AT LONDON HOTEL’S POOL

A stunning lighting scheme in London’s Corinthia Hotel was the culmination of a painstaking three-year vision by Lighting Design International with the help of some fibre optics from Light Projects. The hotel’s subterranean spa covers 3,300sqm spread over four storeys. To realise their vision, LDI approached Light Projects to supply a creative mix of Roblon Fibre Optic lighting which would provide a stunning atmosphere and inviting pool area. Using fibre optics with Aquarius fittings, light is cast up from the bottom of the stainless steel pool and passes through the ever-moving water, creating dynamic patterns on the white ceiling while illuminating the entire room. In addition, colour-changing and dimmable fibre optics lighting is cleverly used to delineate the steps and to illuminate the feature wall of gold-veined black Tunisian marble. Senior LDI lighting designer Ellie Griesen was keen to specify flush fittings in the infinity pool to minimise the risk of tripping while ensuring uniformity of light. To achieve this, she specified Roblon’s side-emitting fibres around the edge below the waterline with Aquarius fittings on the pool floor. This beautiful scheme demonstrates many of the inherent

work when the system is not in operation. Using this information, they have spent the last seven months developing the next generation of water-powered swimming pool lights culminating in their latest product – FlowBright Plus. FlowBright Plus uses the same high-flow, low resistance patented turbine technology as the original FlowBright, however, it has been installed with a large rechargeable battery. Instead of sending the energy directly to the LED, all the power generated will be stored within the battery. Now, when the light is turned on, it will draw its energy requirements from the battery and not from the real time coil generation. This has several advantages over the original model. FlowBright Plus’s rechargeable battery is able to function at much lower flowrates compared with the operating voltage of the LEDs, which enables it to function at flowrates significantly below

advantages of fibre optics lighting and why dimmable DMX controls with colour wheels and CTC filters help lighting designers realise their most creative designs and schemes.

The original FlowBright is available now, and FlowBright Plus is expected to be available no later than January 2020.

SAVE ENERGY WITH LIGHTING FROM EVA OPTIC Specifically developed for the demanding swimming pool climate, EVA Optic underwater lighting is available in the UK exclusively through Golden Coast. Economic as well as robust, EVA Optic products are built to last, with low running costs and low maintenance. The world-class lighting is also protected against damaging water and heat, sustaining its high quality and functionality throughout its life. Under average commercial use, LED lighting from EVA lasts 6-7 years without requiring replacement. The products also include a four year manufacturer’s warranty. EVA Optic LED underwater lights save a lot of energy – using eight times less power than halogen equivalents – so the investment is generally earned back within three years. Underwater lighting provides better views for swimmers. Advances in LED technology means EVA Optic offers perfect colour mixing without glare. Installing a wide beam lamp will light the pool evenly, eliminating dark corners, and with a multi-angle light beam, you even get full illumination to the very bottom of the pool. Tested to international safety standards, all electronics are located outside the luminaire in a central technical area, meaning there are no electrics underwater. The airtight design of EVA Optic underwater lights has a water resistance

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 51-54_SPN_Aug_19_Lighting.indd 53

of IPX8 and makes installation possible at depths up to 25 metres below the water level. EVA pioneered a unique solution with temperature monitoring automatically adjusting the lights’ performance. The LEDs feature thermal protection within their housing and dim when higher temperatures are detected – this prevents damage from overheating and guaranteeing the lifespan of the products. And with the upgrade of a DMX controllable multi-colour RGBW underwater lamp, you’ll have the ability to transform an entire facility’s lighting with one press of a button. By using a DMX controller, you can change the colour and light intensity at any time or even create your own light scenes.

WATERCO’S BRITESTREAM LIGHTS BENEFIT FROM LENS INNOVATION Landscape architects, pool technicians and pool builders can now eliminate harsh hot spots and distracting shadows in their pool lighting thanks to Waterco’s latest lens innovation. Unlike traditional LED lenses that restrict the light output to unflattering hot spots, Waterco’s new BriteLUX Diffuser Lens radiates light throughout the entire circumference of the lens. In fact, the BriteLUX Diffuser Lens improves the light’s luminosity by 50% in comparison to the company’s standard LED light lens. Available in new installation kits, and replacement light kits that can be used to upgrade older halogen or LED pool lights, the new lens is engineered to boost colour saturation significantly and increase light transmission. Waterco has also incorporated the BriteLUX Diffuser Lens in its new Britestream MKV LED lights, providing pool owners with an energy efficient, super bright lighting solution that operates on only 15 watts of energy. Britestream lights are designed to easily replace existing halogen pool lights and, thus, slash pool light electrical power requirements by 85%. Britestream LED Replacement Kit includes a retrofit connector and a universal pool light adaptor, cleverly designed to adapt the Britestream to convert a majority of lights. Flush mounted lighting can be of the halogen or LED variety, and essentially is installed inside the wall of the pool so that it creates a smooth finish. All that can be seen is the face of the light.

One of the main advantages of flush mounted lighting is the flexibility in terms of placement, as they can be placed almost anywhere inside a pool, including near stairs, as they do not protrude and therefore won’t be knocked about. Waterco’s Britestream niche lights only protrude 11mm from the pool wall, giving a pool a stylish, clean finish. SPN

WATER PLAY EQUIPMENT

Upping The Fun Factor Bright, vibrant and entertaining, water play equipment is one factor that can increase the popularity of swimming pools and bring in much needed revenue to commercial operators in the UK. In this issue, we look at the appeal of this exciting age targeted sector for swimming pools across the country and cover everything from slides, play structures and water games through to simple but effective pool toys By Jon Wadeson

T

here’s something about water that ramps up the fun level for kids of all ages. Whether it’s diving for toys, running through water jets, rushing down slides or just splashing around and getting wet – water seems to equal more fun and freedom. No other location can rival a well-designed water play area, and the popularity of them, especially in a hot summer, never diminishes. There’s a huge variety of products on offer – from obstacle courses that can be packed away after use to permanent structures in the form of slides, water canons and tipping buckets – there’s plenty on the market to stimulate young minds. Smaller, hand-held toys play their part too and together, they all contribute to create more fun in and around the water. With many commercial facilities around the UK making the most of the available equipment, we take a closer look at some of the fun options available in the water play sector.

WHEN IT COMES TO FUN, CERTIKIN PLAYS UP! Slides and play structures, in the shape of mermaids, giant taps and pirate ships, are just some of the fun play features that Certikin has to offer. In fact, the company boasts one of the most advanced in-house design departments, complete with computer generated graphics and 3D imagery, of

anywhere in the UK. “Our team can provide design expertise for projects of any size, and work around a chosen theme or suggest ideas. Our product range is extensive. Whether it is custom-build or off-the-shelf features you are after, we can supply the lot!” said Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson. “Playing with water is a vital part of a child’s development,” continued Steve. “Although the primary aim of the equipment is to allow kids to have fun in a safe environment it allows them, at the same time, to learn through play. Kids’ play equipment needs to be strong and durable especially when coupled with the harsh environment of a swimming pool.” Fortunately, all of Certikin’s range of products including Van Egdom and Aqua Drolics are made from a combination of UV stabilised GRP, Marine Grade stainless steel and chemically resistant rubber, making them tolerant of kids and chemically treated water! Steve added: “All the interactive features are very easy to install. There’s no need for additional plumbing because most of the water features have built-in mechanical hand pumps that children operate manually. There’s no need for buried pipework and costly electrical pumps as the features use the existing swimming pool water. Retrofitting is a breeze – in most situations the only requirement is to lower the existing pool water level to allow small anchors to be

installed in the pool floor. This can be done at night so that the facility can open for business in the morning.”

INFLATABLE FUN FOR A VARIETY OF AGES Wibit’s inflatable interlocking waterplay products can create a variety of floating courses for commercial pools. With a modular construction, each element can be connected in multiple combinations to create an individual solution for every pool owner’s need. Next to the most obvious parameters – pool size, water depth and capacity – the team at Wibit understand which additional criteria are relevant to find the perfect combination for pool owners. All of the company’s open water products are available for pools. However, bigger is not always better and in terms of handling, smaller products might be easier to manage for pool staff. From Wibit’s experience, in pools every cm / inch counts in terms of dimension and water depth, therefore the company offers a range specifically for the commercial pool sector. All of the company’s standard combinations are designed to fit the common pool size. Straight tracks are Wibit’s top pool sellers as they bring fun and action while preserving several lanes for swimmers. For owners looking for a big loop covering the whole pool, that’s no problem with the modular nature of the products.

Splash Balls are ideal for building water confidence. Splash balls can be introduced at bath time and they are a great way to encourage babies and children to reach for their favourite superhero. Zoggs Seal Flips can be used as a swim and retrieve game or you can blow them so

they flip! This brilliant fun game is ideal for making children feel comfortable in the water and can be combined with a swim jacket or armbands to help their confidence. Dive balls are an entertaining way for families to play together. There’s a lot of fun to be had seeing who can race to the bottom of the pool to retrieve a dive ball first. You can mix and match superheroes like Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman too. A similar game can be played with Zoggy Dive Sticks. These can be thrown in the water and retrieved. Children can either collect one each as part of a competition or go after all four of the dive sticks themselves. Heading beneath the surface for Zoggy Dive Rings is a brilliant way to develop competent skills as well. The feet are weighted to help them land upright making it easier for children to grab them.

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

Exploring Low And No Chlorine Options Whether it’s through the use of chemical systems such as UV and Ozone, when it comes to the treatment of pool and spa water, there’s now a number of tried and tested low and no chlorine solutions on offer. With options often providing a much gentler wet leisure environment, it’s easy to see why they are increasingly popular and in this issue, we take a closer look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson

O

ver recent years, manufacturers within the wet leisure industry have been put under a great deal of pressure to come up with safe and trustworthy pool and spa disinfection solutions that don’t rely solely on large doses of chlorine for effective sanitisation. As a result of this challenge, there is now a wide range of alternative treatments available which do exactly that. Low to no chlorine, it would seem, is the increasingly popular way forward in both domestic and commercial settings and provides a welcome solution for indoor pools in helping to eradicate unwanted chemical smells. Chlorine will always have its place in pool sanitation but reducing the levels or replacing it completely provides some great additional benefits and many pools across the UK are adopting this approach. With numerous solutions and systems on offer, we take a look at just some of the options.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 61-64_SPN_Aug_2019_Alternative_Approach.indd 61

PUT WATER TREATMENT ON AUTOPILOT WITH CERTIKIN To enjoy fresh clean water safely in a swimming pool, it is still necessary to use a primary disinfectant. The main option in the UK remains chlorine. It’s great to see that UV and Ozone systems have become popular options for successfully reducing chlorine usage. Salt chlorine generators can improve the bather experience further still by easily and safely generating a constant, low level of chlorine by the process of electrolysis. Home owners need not buy, store or handle hazardous chlorine tablets or granules ever again. Red eyes and itchy skin can become a thing of the past and the pool water will feel soft and silky! AutoPilot Salt Chlorine Generators are exclusively available in the UK via Certikin The Certikin UVC is simple to install and can be fixed horizontally or vertically. Available from Golden Coast, the Triogen UV Ultra is a great system to use as part of a lowchemical water treatment process

FEEL THE DIFFERENCE WITH MAGNAPOOL® FROM LIGHTHOUSE The very first time a bather jumps into a MagnaPool® they can feel the difference. The water has a gentle, silky feeling against the skin. There is little or no irritation to eyes and hair won’t need washing to get rid of that chlorine smell or sticky salt – a feeling often associated with chlorine and salt water pools. The pool will always have crystal clear water and will be easy to maintain. The magnesium chloride found in MagnaPool® minerals is derived from the ocean. This form of magnesium has been found to have significant beneficial properties for internal health, as well as helping to relax the mind and body. It can help in detoxifying the body, reducing aches and pains, relieving stress and anxiety and providing the muscles with energy. Studies have proven that absorbing magnesium chloride through the skin (transdermal) is one of the most effective ways for the body to maintain healthy levels

the water can be reduced by 50 per cent, compared to a pool’s usual level. “The Triogen UV Ultra is a great system to use as part of a low-chemical water treatment process,” said Mitchel Percy, Technical Sales at Golden Coast. “It’s very effective at reducing the levels of bacteria, particularly because the Ultra has a larger vessel for slowing the flow around the lamp, allowing it to dose the water thoroughly with UV light.” The UV Ultra series features models with either 1, 2 or 3 LP lamps for treating water flows of 11, 22 and 32 cubic metres per hour respectively. The units are made from corrosion-resistant polymeric materials, and each lamp is long-lasting, as it only needs to be changed every 18 months. “The Triogen UV Ultra is not only costeffective, but also low maintenance and easy to run,” continued Mitchel. “UV treatment is better in terms of health and safety for pool owners, as they don’t need to handle as many chemicals when working on their pools.”

MICROTECH ALIGATOR – AN ECOFRIENDLY WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM of this important mineral. Magnesium is responsible for many important cellular processes in the body. It can support detoxification, reduce stress and alleviate aches. It promotes energy and wellbeing and can restore soft and healthy skin. The MagnaPool® system helps keep chloramine levels to a minimum, so the water is gentler on sensitive skin. Due to the strong flocculent effect of magnesium, it works like a magnet helping to rid the pool water of impurities and removing organic debris and combined chlorine.

THE POWER OF LIGHT WITH TRIOGEN UV ULTRA Available from wet leisure industry distributor Golden Coast, the Triogen UV Ultra unit uses a physical, chemical-free process where water is pumped through a chamber and past a low-pressure (LP) lamp that emits a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light. As the water passes by, the UV light breaks down the DNA of any bacteria and viruses – making it highly efficient as a natural form of disinfection. The Triogen UV Ultra should still be used in conjunction with low levels of disinfectant, as UV is best at protecting against chlorineresistant organisms. But with UV treatment, the amount of residual sanitiser used in

Chlorine has long been the industry favourite for it’s proven to be very effective, but it is harsh and can cause skin and eye irritation as well as an unpleasant odour. Salt pools are a popular alternative but they convert the salt to chlorine and they can irritate as can other alternatives such as bromine. The Microtech Aligator water purification system is a low chemical, eco-friendly and automatic solution which is well within the budget of most domestic pool owners. “We believe that it is really the end for stinging eyes and irritated skin conditions,” said General Manager David Dunn. The system works by harmlessly charging copper and silver ions creating a residual disinfectant throughout the pool. No other system other than chemical sanitation will do this. The ions are pH neutral, non-corrosive and have no effect on the human body. The system is not affected by heat or light and is effective for longer periods than UV or chemicals. Once programmed the system is fully automatic and will reduce chemical usage by 80%. Established in the UK since 1992, Microtech Aligator has installed systems in health clubs, hotels, spas and private homes across the UK and Ireland and has thousands of satisfied customers. “The water

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

Chlorine will always have its place in pool sanitation but reducing the levels or replacing it completely provides some great additional benefits and many pools across the UK are adopting this approach”

is pure, you can use the backwash from your pool to water your garden as it contains less chemicals and is completely harmless,” added David. The company are so confident of their system they offer a return to base guarantee on parts and labour for five years. Microtech Aligator is listed under ECHA Article 95, the only UK based manufacturer legally allowed to sell its product for use in swimming pools in the UK.

GAFFEY HYPROLYSER CREATES A LOW HAZARD PLANT ROOM Whilst great water quality and efficient chlorination are prerequisites for any pool operator, these requirements are only part of the picture when considering an equipment upgrade or new-build pool. In smaller commercial/hotel pools where technical staff are often in shorter supply, choosing a disinfection system which eliminates the need for the handling and storage of hazardous chemicals is an attractive proposition, in addition to a significant reduction in COSHH management tasks. Andrew Gaffey, Technical Director, commented: “We know that the majority of chemical spillages or chlorine gas incidents occurring in pool facilities happen when hazardous chemicals are being transferred, prepared into solution, or when the cleaning or maintenance of chemical injection points is undertaken. If these tasks and hazards can be avoided altogether then the chances of accidents and injuries occurring through operator error are greatly reduced.” Hyprolyser® iSEC models produce a dilute sodium hypochlorite solution, safely generated on site using only salt, water and electrical energy. The hypochlorite solution produced contains less than 1%

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 61-64_SPN_Aug_2019_Alternative_Approach.indd 63

active chlorine, below the threshold for classification as a dangerous substance. As this solution can be produced freshly on demand every day, there is no need for large quantities of chlorine to be stored on site. The added benefit of on site production means that the generated solution is always fresh and does not degrade in storage like commercially produced sodium hypochlorite. Manufactured by Gaffey at their factory in Lancashire, Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems are now available in capacities from 30g/h to 8.5kg/h of chlorine. Well proven in delivering a safe and economical alternative to commercial chlorine chemicals, they are used in swimming pools around the world.

A NEW APPROACH – BOSTA’S BIOLOGICAL LOTUS BOX Last year, Bosta UK launched a new approach to pool filtration and water treatment. The use of chemicals to maintain pool water quality has been the norm for decades, but there are now efficient ways to maintain a pool without the need to use chlorine. The Lotus Box is a complete assembled plant room which includes everything needed to filter pool water successfully by biological means and then treat it. The Lotus Box can be installed on new or existing pools and includes a filtration pump for water circulation, mechanical

pre-filtration using a multicyclone filter, biological filtration using the shark bead filter which uses micro-organisms to digest the organic residue. Water purification then takes place through the UV-Ozone system which gives ongoing disinfection in the pool without the use of detergents. Don’t be mistaken in thinking this is a natural pool which relies on plants to filter the water through phyto-purification. There is now no need to use plants to maintain crystal clear water. Through the careful design of the Lotus Box, the manufacturer can guarantee the flow rates required to maintain healthy pool water and treat the water through biological means. Although new to the UK, the Lotus Box system has been successfully installed at a number of commercial pool sites in France and Belgium and conforms to the stringent water treatment laws in these countries for pools up to 500m3.

PURIQ SYSTEM UTILISES THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR OPTIMAL PURIFICATION Available from Fairlocks, the PURIQ UV-C water purifier guarantees crystal-clear water. Utilising the latest technology, the lamp emits very powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH moulds. This results in optimal purification, so the use of chlorine and other chemicals can be reduced by up to 80%. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extended life UV-C lamp lasts an incredible 12,000 hours ensuring the water quality is free from bacteria and algae. This enables customers, friends, or patrons to enjoy safe, clean swimming pool water for longer. So how does PURIQ work and why is it so effective? UV-C is invisible electromagnetic radiation that ranges in wavelength from 100 to 280 nanometres. These wavelengths fall just outside of the part of the spectrum visible to the human eye. The disinfecting qualities of UV-C light are based on the damage it causes to the DNA of microorganisms. Good disinfection lamps produce UV-C light with a wavelength of 253.7 nanometres. The DNA absorbs the UV-C rays, and the resulting photochemical reaction breaks down the DNA code. As a result, the microorganism is made harmless and can no longer multiply. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing in the PURIQ system extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. Installation of the PURIQ UV-C system is very simple and for peace of mind, each comes with a three year warranty against manufacturing defects.

WATERCO TECHNOLOGY REDUCES MAINTENANCE, CHLORINE USE AND POWER BILLS Waterco’s new, energy efficient Hydrochlor MK3 Mineral Chlorinator enhances chlorine production whilst reducing energy consumption, creating a pool that’s easier to

maintain than a traditionally chlorinated one. Its unique Intelligent Power Pack intuitively recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. This allows customers to stock one power pack, rather than a power pack per cell – while simultaneously reducing inventory. Also, the cell housings are identical, which means that the salt cell can be easily upgraded or downgraded. “Hydrochlor features the latest Switch Mode Power technology to increase energy efficiency by over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption and therefore energy bills,” explained Tony Fisher, Waterco Europe CEO. “It also draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output.” Hydrochlor’s automated self-cleaning technology also cleverly reverses its polarity to detect and clean calcium build-up off its electrodes – a feature which helps increase the lifespan of the chlorinator and reduces the cost involved in repairing it. While the MK3 Hydrochlor works with standard salt pools, Waterco’s engineers designed it to work in synergy with the company’s Mineral Crystals range, effectively transforming backyard pools into a therapeutic oasis.

STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS

The Appeal Of Stainless Steel

Whilst still a niche sector, the appeal of stainless steel pools goes much further than them being chosen solely for challenging environments. Trendsetters love their polished looks and the same is true for many pool accessories too. Strength and durability combined with timeless aesthetics – it’s no surprise that stainless steel options are always in demand and in this issue, we examine just some of the available options By Jon Wadeson

T

he unique characteristics of stainless steel that make it so ideal for use in building swimming pools, spas and their associated accessories include its low weight, strength, flexibility, durability and corrosion resistance. Add to that aesthetics which exude quality and which never go out of fashion, and it’s easy to see why the appeal of stainless steel endures. “The current stainless steel pools’ market is certainly buoyant judging on the number of enquiries and interest in this luxury high-end item, although it certainly could be classed as a ‘niche’ product,” said Dyfed ThompsonSmith, General Manager at AstralPool UK. “To this end the pools are more suited to high end residential markets and prestigious apartments and penthouse developments and also the very high-end health club and spa/ hotel market.” Exclusive looks and unique properties are further enhanced with the ability to ‘pre-engineer’ pools in a modular process, similar to the ways that have been developed for virtually all aspects of modern building, designers and contractors can now also utilise the efficiency of the construction process and save considerable time and money during the pool build. As with smaller stainless steel accessories, components for a complete pool project are produced to proven design templates in manufacturing facilities where quality control is strictly monitored. This process means that construction surprises are virtually eliminated and accurate costs are always known. With many advantages over other materials used for pool builds and in the production of many accessories, it seems the flexible nature of stainless steel will guarantee its use for many years to come and in this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the stainless steel solutions that are on the market in 2019.

Working with Berndorf Bäderbau, London Swimming Pool Company offer luxury stainless steel pools to private clients

As with smaller stainless steel accessories, components for a complete pool project are produced to proven design templates in manufacturing facilities where quality control is strictly monitored” THE COMPLETE STAINLESS STEEL SERVICE FROM LSPC London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC) has a 30 year track record of creating award winning concrete pools, but two years ago it expanded its portfolio of services to offer luxury stainless steel pools to private clients, capitalising on the growing interest in this spectacular finish. Working in concert with Berndorf Bäderbau, Europe’s premier stainless steel pool manufacturer, LSPC creates the bespoke pool design and the stainless steel pool shell is constructed to fit the pool specification exactly to ensure smooth installation. Once the pool is built and testing of the pool shell integrity has been successfully completed, the LSPC Servicing team commissions the pool before handing it over to the client.

LSPC Servicing will tend to handle the ongoing regular pool maintenance too. LSPC Managing Director, Jamie Smith said: “There is tremendous interest in stainless steel pools now. Clients are drawn to the finish because of its ultra sleekness which graces any upscale residence, traditional or modern. Our design team spends a lot of time with the client at the concept stage, taking them through different design options, of which there are many because the material is so flexible, as well as the requirements for the plantroom. Clients soon begin to appreciate the benefits of a stainless steel pool way beyond pure aesthetics. A big advantage to them is the potential to have their pool finished sooner, because the construction process is considerably faster than building a traditional pool.”

OPINION

Follow-the-leader “We all need leaders. Some of us need to be them and some of us need to follow them, but are we getting the leaders we deserve?” asks Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast

T

here is certainly no shortage of software and apps that promise to make it easier to manage our businesses and there is an equal glut of podcasts and eBooks that offer to share the secrets of highly effective managers but I’m not entirely sure that is what we need.

WHAT WE NEED ARE LEADERS For instance, it took the Victorians just 20 years to build 8,000 miles of railway and transform transport and society in our country for all time. On the other hand in the last 20 years we have managed to discuss, plan and then put on hold a new runway for Heathrow and HS2. It isn’t that we are short on the technology or the funding. It seems that we are lacking the vision to make things happen. Can you imagine how Brunel or George Stephenson would react if they were spirited back from the past and put in charge? Both of those two entrepreneurs worked their way up from the bottom, they weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, they both stood on the footplate with their hand on the throttle. Compare that to those embarrassing photo-ops of present day politicians wearing Hi-Viz and looking at bits of machinery that they have neither interest in or knowledge of.

I HAD A DREAM Leaders create a vision; a vision that they can share and other people can buy into. Painting a picture of a bright and positive future is a lot more effective than railing against the problems of today. Managers can meet targets and deadlines, but managers aren’t always leaders. But we don’t have a dream of where we are all going. We don’t share the optimism of the 60s and 70s or even the greed and ambition of the 80s and 90s. What typifies this last decade? Austerity and increasing division in our society. That’s certainly what it feels like, along with real scandals and fake news. Our leaders seem far too concerned with their own success than with benefiting society and the media seems to go along with that. I saw the PM’s job described as ‘the top prize in politics’. Surely it should

be seen as the position that holds the most responsibility.

WHEN EVERYONE LOOKED LIKE JACOB REES-MOGG We can look back to the towering giants of the Victorian age and ascribe Dickensian values to them but the age of industrialisation and factories was also the age of Port Sunlight and philanthropy. The economic leaders who had grown vast manufacturing industries were also the first to attempt to care for their workers from the cradle to the grave, to educate them and provide them with health care. They spent fortunes on social reforms and ‘good works’. These leaders of business saw that social responsibility came with their success. They set out to change the world, as the best leaders do, and they set out to change it for the better. At the same time, politicians saw politics as a duty or a cause that needed championing; they didn’t see it as a career.

LEADERS NEED EXPERIENCE The qualities of leadership take time to develop. We like to see our business leaders associated with success but the very best of them will take risks and that can sometimes

lead to set backs. Lord Sugar has never been fired but life behind the boardroom table hasn’t always been easy and the 90s saw him at a low ebb but he is still one of Britain’s best-known business leaders. By the same token, quite a few of the Dragons have hit rock bottom at some point in their careers. What sets them apart is their ability to learn from those situations and come back stronger. Leaders persevere. Perhaps it is their openness to change and their belief in that bright vision that gives them the strength to carry on, but carry on they do.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? So where do we find people who exhibit these skills of leadership? Where do we find someone who inspires and unites people? Where do we find someone who speaks out against what they think is wrong and tries to make the world a better place? Perhaps the person that stands out for me today is a 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl who first heard about climate change when she was 8 and simply couldn’t understand why so little was being done about it. Greta Thunberg is now world famous and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and more than 1.4 million pupils in over 2,000 cities have joined her school strike for climate change. Is she a leader that we deserve? I think perhaps that she is a leader we have been lucky to have found. She gets my vote. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
