even there, the weather has improved over the last week. Fingers crossed we can end the summer with some sustained hot weather, something that is often crucial to the success of the industry.

“Keep calm and carry on” is a saying that I never really paid much attention to until recently, but it’s a mantra that seems particularly apt just now. Why? Well with the historic Brexit vote now a month down the line, nothing has really changed that much so why wouldn’t you keep calm and carry on until something does. Certainly the predicted doom and gloom hasn’t materialised and stock markets haven’t plummeted as was suggested by some. Yes there’s been a drop in the value of sterling but you don’t have to look too far back to see much worse exchange rates compared to now. For me, as with any situation, it’s a case of looking for the positives, even at this early stage. Take the weaker pound. In theory it should lead to more overseas visitors who may want to use leisure facilities whilst on a trip here. It could even mean more Brits will stay in the UK rather than seek trips abroad, which could also be fantastic for our industry. And sadly, with what’s going on around the world right now, that’s perhaps not as far fetched as it sounds. The truth is, it’s impossible to know how things will pan out over the medium and long term, we’ll just have to have faith in the new Government and wait and see. In fact, for me, the lack of a decent summer is more of an immediate concern although

In this summer issue of SPN, we have a feature on dehumidification and ventilation, an important area of indoor pool design, which is essential in creating the right swimming environment. We also take a look at stainless steel pools, a sector which is still somewhat niche in the UK but one which is offering up some stylish swimming solutions. When it comes to water, this issue we look at a selection of the low and no chlorine treatment options that are available and which are providing an alternative approach to the more established treatment methods. Water testing features too as we look at a task that has become much simpler thanks to the advances in technology. There’s also a look at five money saving and revenue generating products that are perfect for the commercial pools sector. Jamie Adams of Golden Coast looks at the importance of training and having a skilled workforce, while STA Pool Plant Tutors John Monaghan and Scott Rutherford look at the benefits of a well designed, sized and operated filtration system. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we reveal the British shortlisted entries for the 2016 European Pool and Spa Awards. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad. So with this issue of SPN covered, hopefully you’ll enjoy reading it as we’ve a wide range of topics on offer. Here’s to an improving summer!

Olympian Opens New 25m Boarding School Indoor Pool

Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE has officially opened the latest joint project from Norwegian Log Buildings and Fowler Swimming Pools – a stunning 25m, six lane indoor heated pool at a school in Kent. Britain’s most successful swimmer officially unveiled the new fully-tiled, deck level pool at co-educational Bethany School set in the Kent Weald countryside at Goudhurst. Built in a bespoke solid log building, the pool complex boasts spacious changing rooms, showers, toilets, lobby area and office. The pool itself has underwater lighting, spectator seating and starting blocks. Underfloor heating in the changing rooms adds a touch of luxury and comfort. “The pool at Bethany School looks stunning and Rebecca Adlington was the perfect choice to open it officially, a winning combination,” said Norwegian Log’s Managing Director Nick Forrester. “Log is an ideal material for swimming pool buildings as it provides effective natural insulation and friendly acoustics, ideal for young swimmers, and as a ‘warm’ material attracts far less condensation. Running costs are also lower than a traditional glass and brick pool building, and our enclosures require only minimal routine maintenance for an indefinite lifespan.” Fowler Swimming Pools and Norwegian Log Buildings have been working together for over 20 years, and when senior staff at Bethany School started to research swimming pools, they were encouraged by a fellow bursar to go and visit a school pool complex built by the two companies in Cobham. Despite extremely challenging ground conditions and harsh winter weather for the initial phase of the build, the project was completed with minimum disruption to the school. “This was the wettest site we have had for a long time. We had to install a new ground drainage system and instead of conventional foundations, had to pile. But once that had been done it was straightforward,” said Fowler’s Managing Director Tom Holman.

F T Leisure’s Bridlington Project Opens The development of a new £25m leisure centre has been completed ahead of schedule and within budget. East Riding Leisure Bridlington brings together wet and dry sports and leisure activities under one roof and will provide accessible health and fitness facilities to serve the varying needs of local residents and visitors to the town. The project included the demolition of the original building as well as the construction of the new complex. F T Leisure designed, supplied and installed the water treatment and filtration systems for the 25-metre, six-lane swimming

The facility also includes a health suite with a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi©, showers and foot spa, along with a wide range of other sports and leisure facilities.

The new leisure centre has been built on the ageing and outdated Leisure World site and has been partly funded by Sport England and the Coastal Community Fund which awarded East Riding of Yorkshire Council £2.1m for the project. The main contractor was BAM, the architects were East Riding of Yorkshire Council and consultancy was by Sheerwater. F T Leisure 0161 494 5785 www.ftleisure.co.uk

NEWS SOMERSETACADEMY AWARDED £481,000 POOL GRANT A £950,000 swimming pool development at a Somerset Academy will go ahead following a grant. Huish Episcopi community swimming pool, in Langport, has been awarded £481,000 of Sport England funding to help enclose its lido and update changing facilities. The grant has topped up money which was already in place from South Somerset District Council and the academy’s own funding. The project will enclose the existing pool, providing all-year round indoor swimming facilities which will be complemented by new, accessible changing areas designed with families and disabled people in mind. The changes will drastically improve the facility for all academy students plus the wider community including members of Huish Leisure, local swimming clubs and primary schools. Construction work is expected to start at the end of September (subject to planning).

OLYMPIC-SIZE POOL A POSSIBILITY FOR HAMPSHIRE An Olympic-size swimming pool could be on the cards for Winchester in Hampshire. Campaigners are optimistic that a 50m swimming pool, which would be part of a new leisure project to replace the city’s River Park Leisure Centre, will be given the green light. Local Council cabinet members voted to recommend the Olympic-sized pool for any future scheme but leader of Winchester City Council Stephen Godfrey and deputy leader Vicky Weston voted against. News of the vote comes in advance of a decision on whether to refurbish the River Park Leisure Centre or build a new one, which would have the space to provide the larger pool, however there were concerns over the cost of borrowing £4.5m to finance the pool and bring the overall cost of the project to around £34m.

Irish Leisure Operators Seminar A Huge Success BRIO Group’s ‘Leisure Operations Health & Safety’ Seminar which took place in Ireland in June was a sell out and BRIO have received some excellent feedback. The seminar speakers gave relevant and practical presentations on current issues facing leisure industry Operators in today’s market, with a strong emphasis on the need for maintaining high standards of operations in accordance with industry best practice guidelines. The topics discussed,

included: The Importance of Ensuring Operational Policies & Risk Management of Swimming Pool Plant Rooms, as well as General Pool Safety (Robert Byrne, BRIO Group); The Risk of Legionella & Other Infectious Diseases That Can Occur In Swimming & Spa Pools (Richard Lamburn); Health & Safety Issues That Can Occur, And How Best To Prevent Them With Suitable Policies (Mark Bagnall, Nuffield Health who

NEWS POPULAR SOUTH COAST POOL COULD REMAIN OPEN A popular pool in Brighton looks likely to remain open after the leader of the local Council said money will be available to replace worn out air conditioning units. According to a council report, the ventilation system at the Prince Regent Swimming Complex had reached the end of its life and failure to replace it would result in the closure of the site. The complex which includes a 25m competition pool, shallow pool, teaching pool and ‘flexi’ pool with a movable floor is one of the City’s most popular and wellused sports facilities, with well over 300,000 visits each year. The report will be put forward to the local council’s Policy and Resources Committee where it’s expected that the green light will be given to improvement work that is estimated to cost in excess of £700,000.

SOUTH LONDON POOL SET TO STAY AFTER COUNCIL CHANGES CLOSURE PLANS A Purley swimming pool looks set to remain as a permanent fixture in the London Borough of Croydon after the local council reviewed plans on its closure. Croydon Council announced that the Purley Leisure Centre pool would close in April 2015 but shelved closure plans following a public outcry. At the time the authority warned the reprieve was only likely to be temporary. However, an initiative which outlines the council’s strategic priorities for the next two decades called ‘Croydon Local Plan’ contains plans for new leisure facilities, although it is not yet known if the leisure centre will get a new pool or if the current one, which the council has previously described as having “maintenance issues”, will be upgraded.

Plans for £5m City Pool And Turkish Baths Submitted The transformation of Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths has taken another step closer with the submission of a planning application to Newcastle City Council. The £5m redevelopment of the historic site proposed by Fusion Lifestyle will bring the City Pool and Turkish Baths back into use as a modern facility while retaining the distinctive neo-Georgian features of the 1920s building. The plans include the restoration of the City Pool and the Turkish Baths which will incorporate a spa. There will also be a range of health and wellbeing facilities including fitness facilities, exercise studios and treatment rooms. Plans for a cafe/bistro will see the front of the building open onto Northumberland Road for the first time – creating a new look and vibe – and turning the building into leisure-time destination for people of the city. Peter Kay, Chief Executive of Fusion Lifestyle, said: “Feedback on our vision for the future of Newcastle City Pool

and Turkish Baths has been overwhelmingly positive and we’re proud to have created some innovative plans which will take this wonderful building into the future. “The building has been empty since 2013 and we can’t wait to bring it back into use for new users and those who grew up visiting the City Pool and Baths.” Graeme Dodd, Director of Napper Architects, said: “It is clear from the feedback

how important the people of Newcastle think the building is - so that makes us even more pleased to be working on the project. “It also makes us more aware of the need for a sensitive approach to the design and restoration as protecting the unique features of the building is key.” If plans are approved work is expected to begin later this year and the facility is set to open in spring 2018.

SPATEX 2017 Space Selling Like Hotcakes! Some things are forever but one thing is for sure, it’s not SPATEX 2017 exhibition space! Delighted SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle recently reported that sales have been even swifter than last year with the result that well over two thirds of stand space has already been sold. The impressive list of exhibitors can be viewed on the SPATEX website. “It’s a great position to be in,” said Michele. “Each week, we are lining up new exhibitors, speakers and show features for what promises to be a really vibrant 2017 event. We are celebrating 21 years of success so we are going all out to ensure it is a very special edition. We couldn’t have established ourselves as the UK’s largest wet leisure international Exhibition and achieved so much without the industry’s fantastic support so 2017 is as much a celebration for our exhibitors and visitors as it is for SPATEX. To ensure your voice, company or expertise is involved please

contact me directly today.” Michele added: “We have also been beavering away this summer to create an entirely newlook website (www.spatex.co.uk) which has just launched. It’s the same content the industry has come to love, but presented in a different way and with new images. It is very user friendly and super easy to navigate whether you’re on a desktop computer, Ipad or mobile. It is one part of the free marketing package that we are offering to our customers to help promote their business on the SPATEX platform and to a wider audience.” SPATEX 2017 takes place Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February 2nd at the Ricoh Arena’s Jaguar Exhibition Hall in Coventry. Plastipack Opens New Test Facility

Above: Amber Rudd opens the new facility and with Plastipack Managing Director Peter Adlington Left: Amber Rudd views the data produced by Plastipack’s test pools

Plastipack Ltd, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of specialist covering materials for swimming pools, has opened an exciting new test and research facility at its headquarters in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. The unique test installation, a world first, comprises five outdoor 8m x 4m x 1.2m swimming pools located side by side. This allows Plastipack to measure accurately and compare the performance of different types of cover materials, while monitoring real-time water temperature and environmental conditions. Rt. Hon. Amber Rudd MP, Member of Parliament for Hastings and Rye, and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change was delighted to open the new test facility formally, saying: “It’s encouraging that an interesting and innovative business such as Plastipack is growing so strongly on the world stage from their established base in Hastings. It’s vital that they are able to continue to access the support within the UK and Europe that is so important for their growth prospects.” Peter Adlington, Managing Director of Plastipack Ltd, explained how the test facility will benefit the company: “Our new outdoor laboratory will be invaluable in the development, analysis and comparison of high performance cover materials for pools. It increases our understanding of how products perform on real pools and will help Plastipack maintain market leadership through technical expertise. It adds credibility to product claims with publishable results and greater environmental monitoring which sets us and our products apart from other manufacturers. It also helps raise the importance and industry awareness of credible performance data.” Designed and developed in collaboration with the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) at the University of Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute and Department of Physics, the project was co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. The test area represents an investment of £100k at Plastipack’s St Leonards site, which currently employs 34 core staff. The company has invested over £3m in its manufacturing and distribution capability since it was formed in 1999 and currently exports to 34 countries around the world. It’s All Change At PWTAG Thirty years on from its inception, PWTAG is making some important organisational changes. The election of Janice Calvert as chair and Ralph Riley as vice-chair during June’s AGM signalled a new emphasis on boosting membership and increasing the independent organisation’s influence in the pool sector. One key to this is a contract with Tamworth-based TC Media, who already handle the administration of the Water Management Society and Legionella Control Association. TC Media will take over the coordination of PWTAG’s day-today duties, freeing up the current technical secretary, Brian Guthrie, to focus on editorial work.

10 August 2016 SPN 4-10_SPN_Aug_16_News_General.indd 10

Top of the editorial list is a new edition of PWTAG’s authoritative book ‘Swimming Pool Water: treatment and quality standards for pools and spas’, but before this is published, work must continue on updating PWTAG’s online Code of Practice so that it marries with planned new Health & Safety Executive guidance. PWTAG’s technical notes will continue to appear online – one on gassing incidents is out now – and beyond that there are plans for a pocket swimming pool book. All this emphasises the need for PWTAG to extend its influence, both through its membership and beyond and the organisation is planning to revise the scope of its

membership too with new categories being introduced and the membership widened. After a three-year gap, this is Janice Calvert’s second term as chair. She is clear that this is an important time for PWTAG, and the industry and said: “It is pretty well known how good pools should be managed. Clearly new developments must be assessed, but if more or less traditional standards of hydraulics, filtration and disinfection were applied throughout the industry, swimmers would be guaranteed a good, safe experience. So we will redouble our efforts to spread the word. And involving the industry in our work is key to that.”

How Do You Make A Sea Lion Happy? The answer is simple… clean healthy water but the route to achieving it isn’t quite so simple which is why, when Dublin Zoo needed a saltwater filtration system installed for their sea lion and penguin exhibit, they turned to Zootech (UK) Ltd, experts in the provision of aquatic environment equipment for zoos, aquariums and safari parks. Sea Lion Cove is the biggest and most exciting development undertaken by Dublin Zoo in a number of years. The new saltwater habitat was inspired by the natural environment of the California sea lions and includes a state-of-the-art water filtration plant installed by Cheshire-based, Zootech, who were tasked with the job of processing around 700,000 litres of water every 80 minutes for the exhibit. Managing Director of Zootech, Jay Rooney said: “We chose Certikin as our supplier of pipework and filtration because of its extensive range. In particular, 355mm pipework and valves were very difficult to source, but Certikin was able to supply.”

Baby And Pre-school Swimming Teaching Goes To Another Level Two of the UK’s major bodies involved in baby swimming teaching, STA and Birthlight, have announced the launch of a new Level 3 Diploma in Aquatic Teaching – Baby and Pre-School. The Level 3 Diploma will be accessible to all baby and preschool swimming teachers later this year who want to further their knowledge and take their

lessons on to a higher level. The qualification, which has been accredited by STA in partnership with Birthlight, has been developed by a working group consisting of several top UK baby swimming experts to ensure its academically and technically the best, addresses the needs of the market and follows best practice guidelines,

including the PAS:520 document: ‘Safeguarding 0 to 4 year old children within the teaching of swimming’. Kayle Burgham, Technical Manager for Aquatics at STA, who are the leading provider of baby swimming teaching qualifications in the UK, qualifying many hundreds of new teachers every year, said: “With Birthlight, we’ve created the Level 3 Diploma in response to requests from our members who feel passionately about furthering their knowledge.” She said: “Francoise Freedman, the founder of Birthlight, is considered one of the world’s leading experts on baby swimming, and using their unique holistic approach we have together combined our knowledge and all our experiences to create a first-class Diploma for baby swimming

teachers.” The four-day course will cover advanced technical knowledge on baby and toddler development; adult and child interactions and communication; and sensory development and awareness. Underpinning this will be Birthlight’s gentle approach to early swimming. Kayle added: “Using the latest in child development and scientific research, the STA accredited course will also look at the reason why we do what we do as baby and pre-school swimming teachers and how we can use this knowledge to improve our lessons and support adults in the way they connect with their children within the aquatic environment.” STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

NEWS DEAF-FRIENDLY SCHEME MAKES A SPLASH A swimming project for deaf children has reached the finals of the National Lottery Awards 2016 – beating off competition from 600 organisations in the search for the UK’s favourite Lotteryfunded project. The National Deaf Children’s Society launched the threeyear programme in July 2014 across England and Scotland as part of a mission to create a world without barriers for the UK’s 45,000 deaf children and young people. So far over 1,000 swimming teachers and coaches have undergone deaf awareness training online, more than 300 swimming instructors have been trained in deafawareness and British SignLanguage (BSL) and over 100 children and deaf young people have benefitted and from deaffriendly swimming lessons in 11 locations across the UK.

‘DEFECTIVE TANK’ CAUSED POOL CHEMICAL LEAK It has been revealed that a chemical leak at a pool that lead to numerous children and adults being taken to hospital was caused by a defective tank. A leak from the chlorination system prompted an emergency evacuation of the pool and five children and 14 adults needed treatment following the incident last August at the East Sands Leisure Centre in St Andrews, Fife. Thirteen fire engines and dozens of firefighters attended the incident along with a ambulances and specialist teams. Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigators identified that the incident had involved an uncontrolled release of the chemical sodium hypochlorite – used for pool chlorination – from a storage tank and pinpointed “several breaches of health and safety law”. According to the HSE report, the “unsuitable” tank did not have sufficient strength for the loads applied to it featured a number of manufacturing defects.

First Stroke And You’re In! Built by Essex pool specialist, Jetform Swimming Pools, this beautiful pool in Ipswich is the flagship of First Strokes Swim Schools, which were founded in 2000 by professional swimming instructor Gillian Dovey, to aim for the highest standards in swimming provision and aquatic training. After nine months of construction, the Ipswich First Strokes Swim School’s stunning pool (18m x 7m) was completed and boasts a good cross section of Certikin equipment. The plant room contains Certikin’s dosing equipment and containment kit. This includes a twin channel controller for free chlorine and pH and utilises a Closed Amperometric Chlorine Probe for maximum stability and accuracy. This is used in conjunction with CertiDos pulse proportional dosing pumps, which, provide further control at the point of chemical addition. Both the dosing panel and pumps are contained in GRP enclosures for ultimate containment and safety. The cabinets are fitted with LED status lights which glow green or red depending on status. This is ideal for sites where the operators require a safe and clear way of identifying when they need to contact their support company for assistance. Further to this, the site also has a CertiDos PAC dosing set. John Hall, Jetform’s Contract Manager, says: “We chose the Certikin dosing system as space was at a premium in the plant room and we like the compactness of the GRP enclosures and its excellent safety features.”

Other equipment includes two Hurricane pumps, two 1.4 SLX filters and two UVs. The pool features 11 PU9 lights, five skimmers, three main drains, two split steps recessed into the deep end wall and a bespoke handrail at the shallow end. John said: “We chose Certikin as our main supplier as we prefer to buy from one source so that all the equipment is compatible. Not only are the products of a high quality but the service we receive is excellent. CertiChem Manager, Vanessa Lloyd is very knowledgeable and has given us excellent back-up.” Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk Jetform Swimming Pools 01268 270 505 www.jetformpools.co.uk

weber.rend OCR Saves Time And Money At Flitwick Leisure Centre The weber.rend OCR pre-blended one-coat render system has been used in the construction of the new leisure, sports and swimming pool complex recently opened at Flitwick in Bedfordshire by Central Bedfordshire Council. Significant savings in time and money have resulted from the use of weber. rend OCR specified as background render for substantial areas of tiling in the pool areas as well as the preparation of larger areas of render prior to the application of painted finishes. The faster application times achieved by the pump applied, onecoat render saves labour costs and speeds the construction programme substantially. Together with lower material volumes, when compared with traditional cement and sand renders, further budget benefits are achieved. weber.rend OCR is designed as a technical basecoat render for a wide variety of stable substrates including brickwork, blockwork and concrete, and provides an ideal background for all Weber finishes, masonry paints and

other surface coatings. The render is based on Portland cement, lime and sand which is factory blended to ensure consistency and conforms to British Standard mix formulas BS5262 and BS5492. weber.rend OCR is available in two grades suitable for external rendering or as a tile backing render; weber. rend OCRT, a lime-free version for tiling background, that conforms to BS5385, was also used in this project. With just the addition of clean water on site, these bagged products require just one coat to deliver render thicknesses of between 8mm and 20mm with a two-three day curing time. By comparison, traditional renders would need several passes to build a 20mm thickness, with three day curing periods between each pass. weber.rend OCR is a fast, efficient render system for modern building operations. Swimming Ace Helps Raise Awareness Of PPS At Ascot Three time Paralympic Gold Medallist Swimmer James Crisp helped raise awareness of Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) at Royal Ascot on Thursday 16 June, as part of his capacity as Ambassador for The British Polio Fellowship. James, who lives in Woodseats, Sheffield and trains at Ponds Forge in the city centre, was present to lend his support to the charity as it unveiled a show-stopping series of hats on Ladies’ Day in recognition of the sports team’s momentous achievements this year, and in the process raise awareness of PPS.

Despite having a packed diary as he prepares and trains for the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio from 7-18 September, James and his wife Katie, who wore one of the designer hats, were more than happy to put a few hours aside to help The British Polio Fellowship spread awareness of the condition. PPS is a neurological condition affecting around 120,000 people in the UK, with a number of symptoms including severe reduction in stamina, fatigue, cold intolerance, trouble breathing and sleeping, and muscle weakness.

London Lifeguard Awarded After Saving A Life Whilst Travelling The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the UK’s drowning prevention charity, has awarded a newly qualified RLSS UK Pool Lifeguard Trainer Assessor after saving the life of a middle-aged local Russian man whilst on holiday in Russia in May. Eleftherios Samourgkanidis, RLSS UK Pool Lifeguard and Pool Lifeguard Trainer Assessor at Alleyn’s School in Dulwich, London, was asleep whilst travelling by the overnight train from Minvodi to Rostov on Don, Russia when a passenger in the cabin above him started to have a seizure and stopped breathing. Eleftherios quickly took control of the situation and said: “I used a technique I learnt in the RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) course called ‘action for regurgitation’, where, whilst supporting the casualty, I turned him on his side to clear his airway and established a clear airway. I then supported the man’s head and made notes on how long each seizure lasted until they completed stopped,” said Eleftherious, adding: “By the time the medics arrived the casualty had regained consciousness, but had no memory of what had happened. A medic stated that the man would have died, had it not been for my actions. He was surprised that somebody knew how to treat the casualty, as first aid knowledge is a rarity in Russia.” The 30-year-old Pool Lifeguard Trainer Assessor is set to be awarded with Certificate of Commendation by RLSS UK for his actions.

A Running Total Of £4,132 For Devon Sales Manager

Adam Clark, Sales Manager for Barnstaple-based Golden Coast, has taken on a gruelling 20 mile obstacle course, raising £165 for Children with Cancer UK in the process. The father-of-two is no stranger to fundraising. In the last three years, he has run 2 full marathons and 3 half-marathons, rowed a 7 mile raft race, and even entered the ring for a charity boxing match. In total he has raised a whopping £4,132 for various charities through these endeavours. He said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has donated so far, in response to my appeal. Running 20 miles and tackling 200 obstacles was a tough challenge, but it’s nothing compared to the battle some children and their families are facing.” Adam points out that, even though the race is over, it’s not too late to donate to the worthy cause. Just visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Dirty-Weekend3WM to make a donation – large or small – online. Of course, it’s highly appropriate that Adam’s employer, Golden Coast, is one of Britain’s leading suppliers of pools, spas and saunas to the trade as after his gruelling day, he was very much in need of a relaxing soak!

ModuloPool: The Pool That’s Ready To Enjoy

AstralPool has launched ModuloPool, a new and exclusive pool construction system. The concept is based on modules that are able to adapt to the needs of individual customers, who can choose and readily customise the size and shape of their pool, as well as the accessories they wish to add to it. ModuloPool is a pool structure that combines the functionality of modular panels with the strength of concrete. A pool built using this system is just as strong and lasts just as long as any traditional pool. Panels are made of polypropylene, a material that is not only resistant to chemicals, but also to temperature changes. Furthermore, it delivers on AstralPool’s commitment to more sustainable innovation, as it is a material that can be fully recycled. ModuloPool has all of the advantages of concrete pools without the inconvenience of formwork. Moreover, thanks to the fact that it is quick and easy to assemble – two people take just one day to assemble an 8 x 4 m ModuloPool – owners can start to enjoy their

Whether you are installing a polymer or traditional block and liner pool, its coping plays a crucial role – both practically and aesthetically. Because of this, it is vital that owners select a long-lasting and durable material that will also complement their investment. Recommended by Golden Coast, the UK’s foremost independent supplier of wet leisure goods to the trade, Senlac natural stone coping

provides an elegant-yet-hardy pool surround. Available in both flat-top and bullnose styles, Senlac paving comes in a variety of colours, shapes and styles to suit every taste. In addition, it’s flexible enough to create standard rectangular pools, as well as less conventional shapes. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.gctrade.co.uk

pools almost immediately. Besides reducing the amount of time needed for the assembly process, the concept will also save owners a considerable amount of money. Thanks to its unique construction system, 35% fewer reinforcement components and 50% less concrete are required. Accu-Tab: “Easily The Best Chlorine Feeder In The World!” So says Eddie O’Neill of Port Talbot pool contractors, Pioneer Maintenance Services. Eddie has been installing Certikin’s AccuTab system for the past 12 years and says its unique performance outstrips all other chlorine feeder water treatment systems. “It is no exaggeration to say that Accu-Tab has totally transformed the business of pool water maintenance and safety. It is super user friendly and simple to maintain,” said Eddie about Axiall’s calcium hypochlorite system, exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Certikin. The Accu-Tab system is an ultra-simple, ultra-reliable, pool chlorination system that can be used for numerous applications with any automatic controller. It’s an excellent alternative to sodium hypochlorite and chlorine gas. Accu-Tab 3-inch calcium hypochlorite tablets are shipped in convenient 25kg pails, easy to store, handle and have a long shelf life. The system doesn’t require special containment

measures or elaborate safety equipment. The Accu-Tab system is as accurate as gas, more consistent than sodium hypochlorite and automatically delivers the precise level of chlorine needed. Accu-Tab contains 65% chlorine whereas sodium hypochlorite contains 10-15%. All chlorine controlled dosing is through 11/2” PVC pipework, using large volumes of water. The Accu-Tab system is low maintenance too. Patented erosion chlorinators have no moving parts or small openings to clog and the feeder carries a lifetime guarantee. Therefore, eliminating the possibility of blocked injectors – keeping operation simple and maintenance to a minimum. All parts, including the pump are fitted with unions and can be changed in fifteen minutes if required. It provides the flexibility to suit virtually any application, size and chlorine demand

– indoor or outdoor. There’s no problem with access as the Powerbase will fit easily through a standard door and if site conditions allow then the gravity fed Accu-Tab feeder may be installed without a Powerbase. Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

KIVU Pump For Large Flows

Pool Play And Family Fun

AstralPool expands the KIVU range, one of the most efficient filter pumps for commercial pools on the market. Made of plastic, it has been designed to filter many types of pools (public, semi-public, competition, water parks, fish farms, etc). The KIVU pump is designed to achieve maximum efficiency with the least noise possible while running. It features a 1,500 rpm centrifugal pump for applications with high flow rates of up to 280m3/h. Three new self-priming pumps (3 CV, 4 CV and 5.5 CV) have now been added to the existing range of centrifugal pumps (7.5 CV, 10 CV and 15 CV). KIVU also includes a stand-alone prefilter and a standard motor shaft, making it compatible with any motor on the market. The hydraulic efficiency of the KIVU pump without a pre-filter is as high as 85%, around 20% more on average than all other pumps for high flow rates on the market. The entire range is equipped with a motor compliant with high-efficiency IEC and NEMA standards (IE2 and NEMA premium efficiency). The KIVU pump can also be run in salty environments, its highquality mechanical seal making it possible for the pump to work with seawater. The KIVU pump’s efficiency is paired with a low noise level while running (66 dBA for the 7.5 CV model), equivalent to the sound of laughter (64 dBA). AstralPool’s range of filter pumps for public pools is now complete with the addition of this plastic model, which offers the highest performance in its class. In terms of price and performance, the KIVU pump is an excellent alternative to cast-iron pumps.

Toys and games are a cost effective way of helping your customers get the most out of pool time and build confidence in younger swimmers However, as a leading independent supplier to the wet leisure trade, Golden Coast points out, pool toys aren’t just for kids. Golden Coast’s Essentials brochure is Europe’s largest collection of pool and spa accessories, and contains plenty of innovative and exciting products guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Diving toys such as matching pairs game, Clam Dive and Hunt, are excellent for making swimming fun for kids, while developing their ability to hold their breath and swim underwater. Meanwhile water blasters, pool balls and much more, provide hours of fun for all ages, above the surface. Golden Coast’s extensive product range also includes fun for adults, too. Badujet counter-current units, which can be specified on new builds or retrofitted, ingeniously allow users to swim in place against the flow. Ideal for making small pools feel bigger, they include luxurious value-added features, such as a pulsing massage function for relaxation and stylish integrated LED lighting for ambience. Managing Director of Golden Coast, Jamie Adams said: “Pools can provide endless fun for family members of all ages… but if customers aren’t aware of how to make best use of them, they can grow tired quickly. To help them get the most from ownership, it’s important to inspire them with the latest developments which will transform their pool’s use – heightening their enjoyment. It’s not just good for them, these sorts of add-on sales are good for your business, too.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.gctrade.co.uk

BADU EasyFit Has Universal Appeal

BADU EasyFit, Speck’s latest circulation pumps is giving installers – for the first-time ever – the option of introducing new pumps into existing plant rooms… without the cost, time and hassle of replumbing. Available exclusively in the UK through Golden Coast, BADU EasyFit is exceptionally efficient: consuming 20% less power than the industry’s leading pumps. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “Choosing EasyFit is a no-brainer for pool owners as it offers an affordable way of reducing running costs. “Installing it really is a no-brainer, too, but – until now – the nature of plant rooms has meant that upgrading

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 20-23_SPN_Aug_16_Prod_News.indd 23

an existing pump required cost and labour intensive replumbing to swap brands. “Recognising this problem, Speck’s designers looked for the most effective way to maximise its versatility. With this in mind, it’s available with an optional connection kit that offers a perfect fit with at least nine leading brands, including the Sta-Rite 5P2R and Hayward Superpumps. “For installers, this a game-changer as it allows them to price competitively, saving their customers money, while reducing their running costs.” Quick to install, EasyFit includes height adjustable feet for easy connection to existing plumbing, which

reduces both assembly time and effort. The EasyFit range features eight pump sizes to meet every need. Approximate power ranges from 9 to 45 m³/hr and pumps are suitable for pools with a volume from 35 to 200 m³. The design features high-quality plastic and powder-coated motors, ensuring units are corrosion resistant. The self-priming pumps offer trouble-free operation, even when connected to automatic pool cleaners. Its maintenance-free, closed, bellow-like mechanical seal, coupled with the secure separation of the pump shaft from water ensure reliability. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.gctrade.co.uk

Waterco Products Are A Specialised Solution For Natural Pools From a surge in health and wellness blogs, to the trendy inclusion of earthy elements like stone and wood in interior design, a return to natural-style living is definitely growing in popularity. Its reach even extends to the water treatment industry, with natural style and chemical free pools rising in popularity across many areas of the globe. When a leading natural pool builder, which supplies pond and landscaping products, were asked to use their expertise in creating a high-end natural pool in Hampshire they tackled the task of blending the pool’s design into the backyard landscape with ease. Having already designed and constructed countless natural pools all over the UK, they know it is important to use the best equipment for natural pools in order to achieve the perfect results, therefore they recommend the Waterco range of specialised products for natural pools. The installation is situated in an idyllic country village outside the town of Winchester in Hampshire, England, and the pool design needed to match the serenity and natural beauty of its surroundings.

With this in mind, they constructed a brand new concrete, natural style pool measuring 40m3 featuring a black liner and dual spill over into the gravel filtration bed, which in turn was planted with a variety of water plants. For this project, a range of Waterco products were selected. These included an Aquamite 1.0hp pump, a 702 Exotuf Pond Professional Bead filter, and a MultiCyclone pre-filtration device. Tony Fisher, Waterco’s Division CEO, North America & Europe, advised all three of the products used in this installation are designed to minimise maintenance while ensuring the clarity and quality of water remain top notch. “These were the perfect combination to ensure continuous high water quality without the use of chemical treatments,” said Tony. “Firstly, the Aquamite is a low energy pump with the correct performance for good filtration and backwash; the Exotuf bead filter is compact, easy to use and maintain, with an excellent level of performance, while the MultiCyclone is an ideal solution to remove the finer particles prior to entering the

primary filtration system.” This Waterco equipment works well in conjunction with the gravel bed filtration already built around the pool edges. This sort of filtration is also known as ‘regeneration zone’, and is an effective method through which natural pools are kept clean and free from threats from algae invasion. Though the gravel bed takes principle position in the filtration system, it is a great advantage to include a bead filter and MultiCyclone in the system. This helps reduce the interval at which sediment is laid down and reduces the formation of string algae – this is of great importance in a recently established regeneration zone, as the water plants may take two or three years to establish to a point where they can remove nitrate efficiently. The final result is a stunning, chemical free natural pool design with a high standard of water quality. Waterco Europe Ltd 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

System Chosen For World’s First Heated, Chemical Free, Public Pool The Cleveland Pools Trust has taken a ground-breaking step in developing a scheme for the restoration of the Grade II listed Cleveland Pools – the country’s only surviving Georgian open-air pools – which date from 1815. The Trust have selected Bristol based Clear Water Revival and their natural filtration system for the 25 metre open air public swimming pool. Director Andrew Cox said: “The system uses natural processes instead of chemicals to keep the water crystal clear at all times. It uses friendly microorganisms and minerals to control levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and pH, resulting in chemical free, mineralised pool water.” He added that the long-term costs of their natural filtration methods

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 25-26_SPN_Aug_16_News_Eco.indd 25

are up to ten times lower than the ongoing cost of running a chlorine pool. This means that the Cleveland Pools will be chemical free but will not need planted filter zones like other natural swimming pools. The system will also enable the water to be heated up to around 28°C and for the pool to be covered to conserve heat and save energy. The restored public pool will therefore be the first in the world to have a heated, freshwater and 100% chemical free swimming environment without the need for a planted filter zone. Calorex Breathes New Life Into Caravan Park Pool Calorex has helped breathe new life into an old swimming pool at Crows Nest Caravan Park in Filey near Scarborough. The 12m x 5m pool underwent a complete refurbishment at the beginning of the year, which included upgrading the heat recovery system. The work was carried out by Ryedale Swimming Pools of York,

who have maintained the pool at the park for almost 25 years. David Maltby of Ryedale Swimming Pools explained: “The previous heat recovery system had come to the end of its life and needed to be replaced. Having been a Calorex customer for many years, I had no hesitation in recommending a Delta system.”

He added: “The quiet operation and low running costs associated with the unit were particularly welcomed by the park owners.” On advice from the experts at Calorex and Certikin, David specified a Delta 6 unit. These clever machines are designed to control the environment, pool water and air temperature

The pool at Crows Nest Caravan Park underwent a complete refurbishment, which included upgrading the heat recovery system to a Calorex Delta

all through one simple PLC controller and with pool water heat recovery as a standard feature throughout the range. David commented: “The installation of the Delta was very straightforward and I was impressed with the level of service from the delivery driver who helped unload the unit and move it into position. “Since it was installed in February the Delta has been providing trouble-free service at the holiday park.” Typically, for every unit of power that a Calorex unit consumes, it will convert three times this amount to useable heat. The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to traditional heat and ventilation energy, cost savings of over 60% are achievable while corresponding C02 emissions can be dramatically reduced by up to 70%. From Building Site To Bathing Pond – King’s Cross Celebrates Its First Year The UK’s first ever public swimming pond installation – Of Soil and Water: King’s Cross Pond Club – is celebrating a successful first year. Overseen by Fusion Lifestyle, and developed by Argent, the natural bathing pond provides a unique and all-natural swimming experience as well as a giant art installation, designed by architects Ooze and artist Marjetica Potrč in the heart of London. The pond, which is 40 metres long and surrounded by wild flowers, grass and deck chairs welcomed over 20,000 people in 2015 who have all experienced the unique, fresh water bathing. The pond also includes access to changing rooms, padlock lockers and hot showers as well as lifeguards on duty during opening hours. With space for 40 bathers, the pond is entirely chemical-free, purified through a natural, closed-loop process using wetland and submerged water plants to filter the water and keep it clear. Ian Freshwater, Project Director at Argent, said: “We’re delighted the pond was such a success last year. One of the most special things about the pond is that it is ever-changing, adapting to its surrounding and forming new life as it grows. We hope visitors will be as excited to visit the pond this year, as they were for the first time last year.” Talking about the Pond a year on, Penny Arnold, Commercial and Operations Director from Fusion Lifestyle said: “The installation has been a huge success and provides a unique, accessible and

Online Hot Tub Brand Ceases Trading After Ten Years After ten years in the hot tub business, online retailer Danz Spas has announced that it has ceased trading. The company was established by Managing Director, Daniel Thomas in 2006. The business started small, but soon took off. In 2013 it moved into new, purpose-built offices in the Basford area of Nottingham, secured widespread media coverage along with celebrity endorsement of its products and according to its website was one of the UK’s largest online spa retailers. Increasingly poor online reviews of the company were suggesting that all was not well with the company and a statement on the Danz website says: “Towards the end of last year we had a number of difficulties and realised things were not going as well as we had hoped. We decided to restructure our business: we let go 60% of our workforce, and brought on board an investor. We thought we were on the right track. “Recently, things have a taken a turn for the worst and unfortunately, our business is no longer sustainable. Legally, we must now cease trading and are in the process of appointing a liquidator.”

Caldera Gives A Holiday In-Spa-Ration! Two years ago, the holiday home owners of The Barns in Lyonshall, Herefordshire, made a very sound business investment and installed two Caldera hot tubs. Since then, they have seen a virtual stampede in bookings with almost all year round occupancy and have recently added a third. Offering a touch of country luxury, The Barns provide groups of holidaymakers a stunning rural retreat in the depths of the Herefordshire countryside. Manager Steph Gardiner said: “We have walled gardens, wood burners, movie rooms, state-of-the-art kitchens for large scale dining and stunning views. Within that setting we wanted to add a wow factor and we very quickly settled on installing hot tubs. “After doing some internet research

is completely enveloped in a soothing massage that can be adjusted for intensity and effect. And individual can lie either face down or face up, receiving a full head-to-toe massage. To assist dealers, 2016 Passion Spa models come with colour-coded jets, and additional visual aids are available free of charge. we contacted Three Counties Pools & Spas in Hereford and Will and Emma recommended two six person Caldera Palantinos. They proved so successful that we have recently added the seven person Vanto. It’s no understatement that the hot tubs have proved a massive draw.” Will Welch of Three Counties said: “The brief was to supply a series of robust hot tubs to meet the demands of a steady stream of holiday makers and, of course, comply with exacting Heath & Safety requirements and Caldera fitted the bill perfectly.” “We empty and refill after each set of guests, which takes one hour maximum, including filling time,” said Steph. “When guests are in residence, daily maintenance takes less than an hour. We have adapted our procedures and training for the care of the spas and feel we are now very efficient whilst maintaining a very high level of hygiene and cleanliness.” Steph added: “The beauty about hot tubs is that they appeal to everyone – from children to 80 year olds and they can be used all year round, whatever the weather.” Certikin International 01993 778855 www.calderaspas.co.uk Three Counties Pools & Spas 01432 273636 www.tubland.co.uk

HOT TUB & SWIM SPA NEWS

Jacuzzi® Celebrates 60 Years Of Pioneering Whirlpool Technology The word Jacuzzi has become synonymous with the global hot tub industry, and in the UK, according to a Lloyds Insurance report, one in 10 households now own a hot tub. As the original invention behind the world’s first whirlpool bath pump turns 60 years old, the pioneer behind this, Jacuzzi®, is revisiting the very personal history behind the household name. The Jacuzzi family travelled to the US in the early 1900s from Italy, to settle in the United States. The Jacuzzi brothers were keen inventors and worked in the aviation industry before their youngest family member, Kenneth Jacuzzi, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which all but debilitated him. Seeing his suffering, Kenneth’s father modified an agricultural immersion pump and transformed it into the first hydrotherapy device that could be used in the bathtub at home. Hydrotherapy uses a combination of changing water temperatures and pressures to aid the muscular healing process. In Ken’s own words, “Air and water are combined… it has always been one of the keys to our design and an important part of it. The air adds to the water and vice versa, it has a synergistic effect.” Roy Jacuzzi marketed the first self-contained, fully integrated whirlpool bath in 1968, which was sold to schools, hospitals and private houses. As larger units

were designed to accommodate more people, Jacuzzi® incorporated heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean, thus creating the first hot tub in 1970. Now an established household name, Jacuzzi® has paved the way for innovation in both the bath and spa industries and remains at the forefront of technology. The Jacuzzi® product portfolio now features hot tubs, whirlpool baths, showers and saunas and its products are a firm favourite amongst professional sports personalities who use hydrotherapy treatment for soothing and massaging tired and injured muscles that need swift recovery. Over the last 60 years, Jacuzzi® has developed more than 400 technology patents, sold over one million Jacuzzi® whirlpool systems and its products are currently available in 77 countries worldwide. Dealers across the UK will be celebrating Jacuzzi®’s milestone birthday throughout the year. Jacuzzi Spa & Bath Ltd 0113 272 7430 www.jacuzzi.co.uk

And Now For Something Completely Different… Super luxurious and exclusive, the new Utopia Series from Caldera Spas offers a super high-tech cabinet and a unique elegant shell design. The spa’s immediate allure comes from its new Avante all-climate cabinetry, which gives a strong architectural impression. A long-strand fibre technology, it is durable and innovative, and available in three earth mineral hues (brownstone, slate and sand). In the spa’s shell, details are kept minimal, elegant and contemporary. The curved bar top design adds to the spa’s signature look and creates a strong visual impact. The hydrotherapy experience is heightened by the addition of two Euphoria jets in the footwell, dual ‘his and hers’ EctaSeats, hip jets and angled calf jets (these vary depending on the model). Sharing Ideas And Working Together BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights some of the initiatives that are in progress with various overseas partners and closer to home, some key events that are on the horizon

T

his summer sees the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, which should be a real boost for people’s interest in sport and in particular aquatic events, which will hopefully again be a success story for our athletes. Those athletes will share their success with the teams that they have behind the scenes, and the value of this teamwork can also be appreciated with the various partners that our industry has across Europe and also with partners in other parts of the world. Sharing ideas and lobbying together on topics of importance to the industry makes sense because the issues faced elsewhere in the world will often be similar in our country. The European standards are a clear benefit from working collectively, please see an article about accessing British Standards Online (BSOL) on page 36. Promoting the industry through the European Pool and Spa Awards is another success story. The awards are organised by EUSA, and there is an article on pages 38 and 39, outlining who has been shortlisted from the UK. Entry to the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards 2016 (BP&HTA) is now open and remember that BP&HTA 2016 winners are likely to be in the running to be shortlisted for the 2017 EUSA Awards, being planned to be hosted during SPATEX 2018. Carrying on the theme of working together, BISHTA is delighted to be extending its relationship with APSP colleagues from North America, especially on their Certified Hot Tub Technician course. More details regarding a course in the UK, will follow shortly. BISHTA also continues other workforce development plans, including hosting a tutor training day for water hygiene management to roll out a common water training syllabus. A separate electrical awareness workshop was recently piloted and received excellent feedback, so courses are being planned in Hampshire and Yorkshire this autumn, with additional courses being proposed for spring 2017. guarantee your place. Our industry is not only about working on standards and award events, etc., but it likes to have some fun as well! Alex Kemsley and Nicole Tingley are planning an exciting industry social event (open to the whole industry) as part of Alex’s President’s Weekend, which is being held at Brooklands Hotel, in Weybridge, Surrey from 9 to 11 September. The famous old motoring and aviation venue will be providing plenty of opportunities for those seeking an adrenaline fuelled weekend, or others may prefer to have a more gentle relaxing time around Weybridge. I would also like to remind members that the annual conferences for BISHTA & SPATA are nearly upon us. The BISHTA event is on Tuesday 4 October and the SPATA conference is on Thursday 13 October. Both events are being held in Andover, so make the most of the technical content and the networking opportunities on offer. Topics being discussed at the BISHTA day include an important session on the Consumer Rights Act (lead by Hampshire County Council Trading Standards). SPATA will be focusing on a number of topics, such as ‘Making the most of British and European Standards Online’ (BSOL). There will also be a presentation from ACAS on how their resources and expertise can help our industry. Also not to be missed, there will be various updates on the new SPATA Standards 2016. Away from the conferences, Leisure Industry Week (LIW) is just around the corner, and SPATA will be renewing its partnership again this year with the organisers. SPATA’s partnership highlights LIW’s dedication to supporting all aspects of the leisure industry and ensures the show provides relevant and useful content for the wet leisure sector. These partnerships allow LIW to continue to develop its offering to visitors and exhibitors, therefore ensuring the show benefits their businesses. Steve Orton, Managing Director of Leisure Industry Week said: “LIW always looks to work with forward thinking and progressive partners, and as such, we are

thrilled to continue our partnership with SPATA, who will also be exhibiting at the LIW. With the support of partners such as SPATA, we can develop high-quality educational content that meets the needs of the industry. “LIW 2016 will not only cater for all sectors of the leisure industry, but every role and position within the industry too, by incorporating six tailored educational streams. In addition to ‘Spa and Wet Leisure’, there is ‘Health’, ‘Fitness’, ‘Facilities Management’, ‘Play’ and ‘Sports’, delivering two days of world class content aimed at improving commercial performance. LIW 2016 will introduce a dedicated Spa & Wet Leisure Education Stream covering all aspects of wet leisure including participation, programming, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), merchandising, maximising revenue opportunities and creating the perfect atmosphere for your spa.” With SPATEX on the horizon, preparations for this industry event are well underway. hatever the personal views about the recent EU Referendum result, the industry will continue to want to benefit from the hard work already undertaken at home and abroad to ensure that there are suitable standards that are applicable for commercial and domestic swimming pools, spas and wellness products (such as saunas). There is every indication at present that the UK government will continue to work within the remit of European standardisation, and so British Standards (via BSI) will continue to be imperative for our industry. SPN have featured the range of relevant standards in previous issues, and SPATA members have recently been offered an excellent service that is outlined below. Due to the strength and size of SPATA (thanks to its membership), the association has been liaising with BSI to provide European standards online at an amazing first-year introductory price of just £50 (+VAT). Showcasing The ‘Best of British’ In The European Spotlight Revealing the British shortlisted entries for the 2016 European Pool and Spa Awards

S

ince 2013, the European Pool & Spa Awards has been shining a light on the most innovative domestic pools, spas and hot tubs on the continent. The fourth European Awards, hosted by EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations) are set to be announced in February 2017 at ForumPiscine in Bologna, Italy. These awards have five categories, with

entries expected from the 14 countries that comprise EUSA. The award categories are: ‘Domestic Indoor Pool’, ‘Domestic Outdoor Pool’, ‘Domestic Spa’, ‘Domestic Pool with an Enclosure’ and ‘Domestic Hot Tub’. Leading the way for Britain, the following companies (all previous winners from the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by SPATA & BISHTA, which makes them eligible

to be put forward for the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards) have been shortlisted.

Background The primary purpose of EUSA is to support the development of a stronger and more prosperous business community throughout Europe. Firstly, to lobby on behalf of the industry, on topics such as the development

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY of European standards to ensure safety. Secondly, EUSA has a significant role to play in promoting the industry, and the EUSA Awards provide a fantastic opportunity to highlight the work being done across Europe. Success in the EUSA Awards is recognition from the industry for the quality of the work being entered and also celebrates the excellence within the wet leisure industry across Europe. The EUSA Awards are open to all National Associations that are EUSA Members, to send in their entries. Each entry submitted by an EUSA member must comply with the relevant National Association Standards, where applicable and may be disqualified if this is not the case. In future, the entries will be expected to comply with the new European standards for domestic swimming pools (EN 16582 and EN 16713). All entries are checked for technical merit, eligibility for the category and their aesthetic appeal. For the UK, entries are submitted from winners of the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA. Judges for the EUSA Awards will

assess the entries on their visual impact, innovation and aesthetic appeal. The identity of each entry will not be given to the judges; this means that judges can vote for any entry, based on which is best. The EUSA judges will aim to agree on a Gold, Silver and Bronze award in each category, subject to there being sufficient entries, of a suitable quality.

Representing Britain The BSPF wish the shortlisted entries from BISHTA and SPATA ‘good luck’ in this year’s competition. Chris Hayes (BSPF Managing Director) commented: “The BSPF is proud to be a member of EUSA and supports the EUSA Awards as a practical way of raising the profile of the great work being done in the UK and across Europe. The standard of shortlisted entries in 2016 from each of the EUSA membership countries has raised the bar again this year on the competition. However, we are confident that our entries will do Britain proud and if there are any winners, they can be sure that they will be able to promote their momentous achievement.”

STA POOL PLANT – FILTRATION

Filtration in Today’s Economic Climate

This issue, STA Pool Plant Tutors John Monaghan and Scott Rutherford look at the benefits of a well designed, sized and operated filtration system

ith fears over BREXIT and current Government spending cuts, local authorities are being asked to make their budgets stretch a bit further. Less money is being made available for swimming pools, with gas and electricity costing more and water costs rising, savings need to be made somewhere. In many cases the axe generally falls on the upkeep of the pool plant, particularly when it comes to replacement. Cutting back on maintenance and refurbishment costs may save money at the time, but in the months and years to follow, it may not be as cost effective as first thought. Filtration is the heart of any swimming pool circulation system; the entire contents of the pool will pass through the filter several times every day. If this part of the system is not designed or operated correctly, then the process will not run efficiently. Filters are expensive, there’s no getting away from that. In many new builds or refurbishments, filter size and design is one of the first things to be compromised when the savings need to made. We believe that this is the wrong way to look at it. A well designed, sized and operated filter is worth its weight in gold, and here’s why: A filter sized to be able to filter swimming pool water at the lower end of medium rate filtration (10-25m3/m2/hr) will be capable of removing smaller particles than at faster speeds. The slower filtration rate also allows the coagulation / flocculation process to work at its best with optimum contact time, assuming correct pH and correct dosing point. Removal of more contamination from the pool by using excellent coagulation /

flocculation, leaves less work for the chlorine in the pool, we can operate at subsequently lower free chlorine levels, with lower combined chlorine levels and less chlorine by products. In a well-designed filter with a nozzle plate, there are fewer (if any) dead spots available for bacterial proliferation and nozzle plates allow better flows associated with backwashing. If we are relying on the filter to trap more pollution but can’t clean the filter; then it can’t work properly. Remember that any contamination retained within the filter may be passed into the water we are trying to clean.

Having a welldesigned and well-maintained system in place, with good operators on site is the best and most cost efficient way to excellent water quality”

BACKWASHING

the pool, we send it to drain. This ensures that polluting particles left over within the filter are flushed to drain and not into the pool. At least one but preferably two viewing windows should be available to monitor the backwash; this includes fluidisation of the media bed during air scour and backwash properly, and the return of the media to its original place during the rinse. And finally, even with the best designed filtration plant, operating at good filtration rates, it is very important to ensure that the system is regularly maintained and is operating efficiently. Having a well-designed and well-maintained system in place, with good operators on site is the best and most cost efficient way to excellent water quality, which doesn’t need to cost the earth. For further information on any of the subjects discussed here and for advice on training, please contact STA.

Backwashing is a three-part process. • Air Scour • Backwash • Rinse If any one of these parts of the process is missing or inadequate, we can’t clean the filter properly. A good air scour process is far more effective at breaking up any firm spots within the media, loosening off dirt, bacteria, salts, oils and fats than water. With a good air scour, less water can be used to flush away the pollution. The filter must be capable of achieving the correct backwash flow rate of at least 35m3/ m2/hr but preferably 50m3/m2/hr. This means that a filter with a surface area of 5m2, requires a backwash flow of preferably 250m3/hr. We need to make sure that the whole system is capable of achieving this. Even with the best backwash we still can’t remove everything from the filter, some pollutants may have been dislodged but not properly washed out, therefore; before we send the water back to

STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

One or preferably two viewing windows should be present so that the backwash can be properly monitored

WATER TESTING

Testing That’s Simple And Easy The regular testing of pool and spa water is now a much simpler task, thanks to numerous recent innovations. In addition to more traditional testing products, the latest smart and mobile technology has been utilised resulting in photometers that provide multiple, accurate tests and manage results data on the go. It’s a sector that doesn’t stand still for long and we take a closer look at what’s available By Andrea Hartshorne

A

nything that can make our busy lives easier and less hassle has got to be a good thing. A product that is guaranteed to take the guesswork out of the serious and important business of water testing is a strong selling point and the array of easy-to-use devices makes this easy. Customers know this process has to be completed, so offering equipment and technologies that makes this trouble-free and straight forward is always going to be a winner. As technologies continue to improve and develop, the tediousness of creating reports once back in the office is removed as the information can be quickly uploaded and provided to those who need to know. Then the required actions can be instigated without delay and corrections or adjustments can be made. We all have demands and pressures put on us through everyday life and being able to send instant information from the water testing devices back to the office, or on to the customer, in an easy and uncomplicated way has got to be a step in the right direction. So this issue, we take a closer look at some of the products that are making the task of water testing a much more straight forward task.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT TESTING, IT’S ABOUT REACTING TO THE RESULTS: READ, RECORD, REACT Accurate water testing of swimming pools and spas is just the start to ensuring pristine water. It’s how the pool engineer records and reacts to the results that are paramount to safety and comfort. Just as water analysis equipment has developed over the years, so has the ability to report the readings correctly. For public pool engineers, the Lovibond® PM 630 is available with a free app (for iOS and Android). Simplifying accurate water analysis with 34 pre-calibrated pool methods, these photometers also includes wireless Bluetooth® data transmission. Now, results can be quickly and easily transferred to smartphones and tablets.

42 August 2016 SPN 42-44_SPN_Aug_16_Water_Testing_Feature.indd 42

The free Lovibond® app, AquaLX®, enables the immediate review, process and evaluation of measured results directly onsite. Data trends can be monitored with easy-to-view graphical displays with definable minimum and maximum values. Any fluctuation to expected results is immediately visible and instant action can be taken. Furthermore, additional personalised information, such as the name of the pool and the pool engineer can be recorded, providing a complete information record of the measurement. Records can be transferred at the touch of a button by email either as a graphic or database record, simplifying the transfer, management and sharing of results with customers and colleagues, facilitating cooperation over long distances. AquaLX® complements an additional Water Analysis app, PoolM8, which is also freely available to download from the relevant stores. By simply entering the results of the parameters including (pH; total alkalinity; The free Lovibond® app, AquaLX®, enables the immediate review, process and evaluation of measured results directly on-site

calcium hardness; total dissolved solid; cyanuric acid, chlorine (free and total) and temperature), the app automatically determines the balanced water index and displays the results which can then be saved to create a history and, again, shared via email. There are also tools for those not wishing to use electronic equipment near the pool. The Lovibond® Log-Sheets are easy to fill out, encouraging the accurate recording of all the Balanced Water (Langelier Index) parameters and provide a simplified formula for calculating the result. To request a booklet, simply email water.sales@tintometer.com.

ADVANCES IN WATER TESTING

The eXact® iDip™ by Industrial Test Systems is the very first photometer in the water testing market to provide 2-way wireless connectivity

Andrew Roberts, Assistant Sales Manager for Industrial Test Systems Inc. explains the developments and advances in safe water testing systems As computers and digital processors were created, so were digital methods for water quality testing systems. The first machines were expensive to manufacture and keep calibrated, and were limited to only one parameter. As the digital era expanded and the costs associated with production were lowered, digital testing methods became more accessible and more capable, opening up digital testing to more applications, such as the recreational water market. Today, multiple manufacturers make photometers and/or colorimeters that can test anywhere from one to 250 parameters, and range in price from less than £30 to more than several thousand pounds. These devices are typically either handheld units for field use, or benchtop units that stay inside the store and are fully self-contained when it comes

THE WATERLINK SPIN FROM LA MOTTE

AVAILABLE FROM CERTIKIN, THE IDIP PASSES THE ACID TEST Certikin can always be relied upon to be the first to bring ground-breaking, innovative products to market and the eXact® iDip™ by Industrial Test Systems is a shining example. It is the very first photometer in the water testing market to provide 2-way wireless connectivity (Bluetooth Smart) with the iPhone®, iPad® and iPod Touch® and Android. It reduces on site test time, increases accuracy and enhances customer experience through real-time mobile sharing of results via email or exported as CSV file. The eXact® iDip™ harnesses Bluetooth® Smart wireless technology so that data is seamlessly transferred between the two devices. The application stores the test results history of multiple pool, spa and water sources. The app can be customised so that you only download the tests you need. Pool technicians will appreciate the ability to store customer data, eliminating repetitive data entry tasks while saving time and money. The ingenious iDip is IP 67 rated, waterproof and it floats.

to testing and displaying results. With the development of smartphones, tablets and computers came the birth of smart digital water testing. Now there is no need for a digital testing meter to have a built-in processor, as long as it can communicate with a smart device. All the testing instrument needs to be able to do is determine the colour development created by the addition of a reagent and send this value to the smart device. From there, the smart device can process, convert and display the results. Added capabilities include saving results digitally; keeping history of tests; adding date, time and GPS location; and exporting, e-mailing results instantly. This also creates accountability for the company that is in charge of providing accurate testing. As the digital era continues to flourish, so will water analysis, and in turn the safety of our water, regardless of market or requirement.

DEHUMIDIFICATION

Getting The Pool Hall Environment Right Is Essential Without effective dehumidification and ventilation, indoor swimming pools are taking a risk – overly humid conditions can lead to condensation, mould, corrosion and even structural damage due to chemicals in the moisture-laden air. For pool users, there’s an uncomfortable environment to contend with which can be even worse for swimmers with certain conditions. So getting the environment right is essential and this issue, we look at some of the solutions on offer By Jon Wadeson LIGHTHOUSE POOLS ADD ZODIAC DEHUMIDIFICATION TO THEIR OFFERING

P

roviding the correct dehumidification and ventilation to swimming pool halls can be a real challenge but without it, problems will arise and one of the most obvious issues is condensation on the pool hall structure, something which if not dealt with will ultimately lead to damage of either the décor or even the structure of the building. So it’s essential that an indoor pool hall should have an well planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions for swimmers and spectators just as importantly, protects the building itself. Thankfully, when it comes to what’s on offer, there’s plenty of choice, experience and advice available, meaning designers and installers should find choosing the most energy efficient way to manage the pool hall environment a breeze and is inline with building control regulations. This issue we take a look at some of the companies and products that are creating the right environment for indoor pools.

DEHUMIDIFICATION HEATSTAR – COMPLETE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL FOR POOLS With advances in technology, pool dehumidification is now just one part of the environmental control required for today’s indoor swimming pools. The key elements in pool environmental control include dehumidification ventilation, air quality, air heating and pool water heating. It is therefore essential that environmental control systems utilise methods of energy recovery, often using refrigeration technology, to condense out excess humidity without the need to throw away the warm pool air. Heatstar is a leading UK manufacturer of swimming pool environmental control systems and has been developing cutting edge technology for pool climate control for over 30 years. For example, a Heatstar system such as the Phoenix EC encompasses all the available dehumidification and energy saving technologies and is fully compliant with the latest building control regulations for both residential and non-residential applications. The Phoenix EC represents the optimum environmental control solution for the highest specification indoor swimming pools and combines three different technologies to achieve amazing performance: ‘Blue EC’ On Demand Fan Technology: The most energy efficient digital fans on the market also utilise auto-fan technology where the speed and power of the air re-circulation fan is managed automatically to enable significant energy savings whenever there is a low demand for dehumidification or air heating. This provides the lowest operating cost of any such system. ‘Cross Flow’ Recuperator: The recuperator passively conducts heat from the exhausted pool room air via a series of adjoining plates directly to the incoming colder fresh air. This

CASE STUDY

process, in combination with the dehumidification heat pump, produces unrivalled levels of heat recovery. Dehumidification Heat Pump: Creates a cold evaporator coil to condense the moisture present in the air to reduce humidity levels. Through this process the heat pump absorbs both latent and sensible energy which is then upgraded and recycled back into both the pool room air and pool water. CALOREX EXPANDS ITS PORTFOLIO WITH THEIR NEW ‘FRESH AIR’ FX SYSTEM Complementing its range of swimming pool hall environmental control systems, Calorex FX systems offer clients a further choice of equipment specification – all from one source. Suitable for hotels, wellness centres and private indoor swimming pools, the Calorex FX System is an effective fresh air ventilation system that uses outdoor air to provide dehumidification using a double pass heat exchanger that delivers up to 95% heat recovery. Ensuring a comfortable, healthy indoor climate is obviously the most important job for a system like this, as this protects both the people who use the pool and the building. But operating costs are equally important, and the FX2 and 3 are extremely efficient. The double cross flow heat exchanger delivers up to 95% heat recovery, combined

The Phoenix EC represents the optimum environmental control solution for the highest specification indoor swimming pools and combines three different technologies to achieve amazing performance

with low-energy EC fan motors to ensure the lowest possible operating costs and low cost of ownership. The built-in mixing function and optimised control strategy takes care not to add any more outdoor air than necessary to provide a comfortable indoor climate.

THE TOUCH SCREEN DELTA SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS

After commissioning a Delta 6 at Scarborough’s Crown Spa Hotel, Anthony Houfe of Pool Heat Ltd gave his honest appraisal. “As proud Calorex approved service agents for the past 25 years, we maintain a very good relationship with Calorex and Certikin, speaking with them daily. When we were made aware of the new PLC controlled Deltas coming to the market we watched closely for its release. “In the meantime we had a very good customer, the Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough, who we look after and maintained with a Calorex Delta 6B which was now approaching 14 years old. One day in passing I spoke with the hotel’s Spa manager, Stuart Russell, about the new PLC Calorex model. He asked us to provide some more information so they could weigh up the benefits of the new model over the existing one and asked for a price. The hotel is very ‘green’ and environmentally friendly and wherever possible looks to reduce energy usage. They did the sums and an order was duly placed with us. “I must say that it has not only met but surpassed our expectations. We monitored the equipment after installation very

48 August 2016 SPN 47-50_SPN_Aug_2016_Dehumidifiers.indd 48

closely and the feedback we got from the Crown Spa Hotel was very good indeed. They can tell the difference in the environment, pool hall and water temperature. The Delta heats the air and water so efficiently and the humidity is very tightly controlled.”

Some of the key benefits include: • Complete solution providing ultimate comfort • Intuitive PLC control • Effective double cross flow heat exchangers with up to 95% heat recovery efficiency • Up to 100% outside air with free cooling in summer • Low-energy EC fan motors • Effective corrosion resistance ensures long service life • Ultra-compact unit with built-in after heating coil.

RECOTHERM’S ‘SCENT SOLUTION’ ADDS AROMAS TO THE POOL HALL ENVIRONMENT Recotherm have been at the cutting edge of swimming pool ventilation design since 1988, and have introduced a number of

less kinetic energy to disperse in any given space. It is a very consistent method, making it very economical also which is a hallmark of all Recotherm systems. The aromatic oils are supplied by Recotherm and are safe, and abide and exceed all regulations on the IFRA database. The diffuser can be set up to operate continually or for just a few hours a day by utilising the built in scent time clock and

innovations. Now they are putting their expertise to greater use with the introduction of ‘Scent solution’ an integrated system that disperses a wide range of selected Recotherm have aromas such as alpine air, apple been at the cutting fresh, bergamot, citrus, cherry edge of swimming pool ventilation blossom, cinnamon, jasmine, design since 1988, lavender, fresh flowers, mint, and as their latest innovation, have lemongrass, ocean breeze, orchid, introduced the ‘Scent rose, sea scent, vanilla to name solution’ but a few. It can be sited within the main plant or externally to provide fragrances that make the pool hall experience more like an expensive spa. Recotherm ‘Scent solution’ is a bespoke system of pump, diffuser and control technologies that diffuses aromas via ‘Cold Air Diffusion’. In simple terms, it pressurises liquid aromatic oil and releases it as a gas, through the diffuser. This is a highly controlled process releasing droplets of 3 Microns or smaller, droplets that are larger, are recycled. This means that diffused droplets are very small in size (3/5th size of small dust particles) and so they do not condense – which could damage walls – and users cannot feel them when they breath it in, thus making the space feel that it has a natural scent. Also because of their size, they require

ECOR PRO – BRITISH ENGINEERING AT A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PRICE Ecor Pro is one of the few actual designers and manufacturers of dehumidifiers in the UK. The engineering team, including the technical director, designed and built most of the dehumidifiers for the Ebac brand, which is where a lot of the team originated from. What was realised when forming the company seven years ago was that if you take excellent British engineering and exactly transfer those designs to a modern factory in China, then you have an excellent product at a highly competitive price. Ecor Pro used these skills to manufacturer on behalf of clients under their very well known brand names. They also sell a range of wall mounted and ducted dehumidifiers capable of extracting up to 190 litres of water per day. A range which is ideal for private swimming pools from homes to hotels and from changing rooms to gyms and great at keeping the humidity at a pleasant level. The key part of Ecor Pro designs is their internal production quality with better use of materials that give longevity to the product even in chlorine filled pool environments. With the management team each having over 30 years hands on experience delivering quality products, it is no surprise that Ecor Pro probably supply more swimming pool dehumidifiers into the UK market than anyone else. Martin Gray, Ecor Pro’s Co-Owner, said that the company is set for further international growth: “We cater for the people who have pools up to around 150m2. Our position is simple. Target customers

who demand good quality dehumidifiers at probably the most competitive prices around. We believe in our products and that’s why with each dehumidifier from us you get a two year warranty. Whether ducted or wall mount we have a product to suit and we are just scratching the market in Europe and the USA.” Unsurprisingly, Martin also worked at Ebac, 20 years ago.

MENERGA UNIT OFFERS DEHUMIDIFICATION THROUGH OUTSIDE AIR Menerga have been providing air handling units in the UK for more than 35 years and have learnt a lot about what works and what doesn’t in the swimming pool environment. For example, the climate in the UK is quite unique meaning that for most of the year the CIBSE minimum recommendation of 30% outside air will meet all of the dehumidification requirements. A standard pool hall is usually maintained at 30°C and at 60% rh. In periods of warmer outside air temperatures, the humidity within the pool hall can be allowed to shift with no risk of condensation on building fabric or comfort issues. By creating systems with extremely high heat recovery efficiencies there is no penalty to be paid for bringing in this outside air and ventilation losses are one of the biggest consumers of energy within swimming pools. The company offer a range of systems including the ThermoCond® Type 38 units which are optimally designed air conditioning systems for private, hydrotherapy, hotel, competition and leisure pool halls. With an all new counterflow plate heat exchanger at its heart, the Menerga

Providing the correct dehumidification and ventilation to swimming pool halls can be a real challenge but without it, problems will arise and one of the most obvious issues is condensation on the pool hall structure...” 50 August 2016 SPN 47-50_SPN_Aug_2016_Dehumidifiers.indd 50

ThermoCond® Type 38 is setting new standards of climate control in swimming pool halls. One of the first pools in the UK to benefit from the latest counterflow technology in a Type 38 unit, was at the Hoburne Bashley holiday park in the New Forest. They monitor their pool energy usage closely and needed to replace some aging equipment. Their decision to go with the Menerga unit was largely driven by the low running costs for their indoor water park that operates year round at the heart of their holiday site. Since installation they have noticed a reduction in energy consumption at the same time as an improvement in conditions within the pool hall with no condensation visible on the windows and doors. The ability for the unit to deliver 100% outside air means in the warmer months the atmosphere remains fresh and healthy year round.

STAINLESS STEEL POOLS

The Appeal Of Steel

AstralPool offer a different approach in delivering the product due to its links to the manufacturing source – Metalast – which is part of the Spanish multinational group Fluidra

Whilst still clearly a niche sector, there seems to have been a resurgence of stainless steel pool options recently and their appeal goes much further than them being chosen solely as a solution for challenging environments. Trendsetters love their polished looks. Combine their appearance with efficient onsite assembly; add in strength, durability and no-leak guarantees and you have an attractive and complete solution By Jon Wadeson

ost pool contractors will have experienced the issues and maintenance problems related to concrete swimming pool

construction. As a material, concrete will provide great foundations and structural support for pool floors and walls, but it’s simply not watertight, durable or low maintenance. With these drawbacks in mind, the search began for a tougher, more robust and permanent solution for pool construction and stainless steel was identified as the ideal material. The unique characteristics of stainless steel that make it so ideal include its strength, durability and corrosion resistance. As pool designers and contractors started to incorporate stainless steel in their projects, they realised that an age-old design and construction problem could finally be addressed. Pools could now be ‘pre-

54 August 2016 SPN 54-56_SPN_Aug_16_Stainless_Pools.indd 54

engineered’ to maximise the efficiency of the construction process similar to the way that such systems have been developed for virtually all aspects of modern building construction. Components are produced to proven designs in a manufacturing facility where quality control can be strictly monitored. The components are then assembled into large fully functional sections, then shipped to the construction site as complete units. This process means that accurate costs are known prior to construction and construction surprises are virtually eliminated. The overall result is that pre-engineered pools save considerable time and money during construction and provide low maintenance and life cycle costs in years to come. Whether for a high level competition venue, a lap or training pool, or a high end domestic setting, stainless steel pools are fully customisable and allow fast, problem-

free construction for any size or shape of pool and we look at some of the companies that are offering the appeal of steel this year.

display water features. Selecting the right concepts, designs, systems and construction methods from initial design right through to supply and installation is what they do best coupled with high quality workmanship on all finished products. The design and construction of a swimming pool facility is a complex process. The multitude of considerations and design options available to the pool designer can be overwhelming. The company provides a complete service to both private and commercial clients and their team can help architects, engineers or consultants with preliminary concepts, ideas or specific answers to the most complex and challenging design issues. Their commitment to invest in the company and their reputation for providing, quality workmanship and offering a complete bespoke service, has made Morgan Bros Leisure one of the market leaders in the world of stainless steel fabrication. With stainless steel becoming a more popular material of choice for swimming pools and spas, Morgan Bros Leisure Ltd relocated into new and bigger factory buildings in Chorley, Lancashire at the start of the year, a move which also coincided with their first

time appearance as exhibitors at SPATEX. The expansion allows them to manufacture and install, pre-engineered and design stainless steel pools and spas for the leisure industry, both here in the UK and for global markets.

STAINLESS STEEL MODULAR POOL SOLUTIONS FROM WRIGHTFIELD Wrightfield have been working with the Natare Corporation for the past five years, with a main goal of introducing their stainless steel pools to the UK market. Natare’s modular design and pre-engineered approach to pool construction is an ideal fit for Wrightfield, as they use this method of construction for their moving pool floors. The installation of pre-engineering components on a construction site is nothing new; the window industry has been using this approach for years. However it’s not a concept that lends itself readily to concrete pool construction. Regardless of the construction system used, concrete pool building is ‘field engineering’. Critical aspects like shuttering tolerances, reinforcement installation, correct concrete mix and placement procedure, expansion joint locations, and finally the correct render and tile application are all site operations.

All these tasks are open to risk and quality control issues, some of which can cause major issues later on down the line if not done correctly. The adoption of a Natare stainless steel pool design will reduce or eliminate a lot of these issues and risks; with a number of added build advantages. The wall sections for Wrightfield’s last installation at Crewe were delivered to site in large sections, all mounted on pre-installed adjustable supports. Corners were square and upright; ladders and steps were pre-formed and came as individual components or incorporated in the wall sections. The gutter design came finished with integrated pool returns, pipework connections were minimal, and the gutter incorporated a deck drain. The gutter design also eliminated the requirement for a surge tank, a construction saving, and a maintenance headache removed. The complete pool construction could have easily been completed in the time an equivalent concrete pool would have taken to cure, a significant reduction in build time. The idea that stainless steel is something that is only used for challenging environments, or to create a different look is just outdated. It’s a modern way of constructing a pool that can accommodate fast track deliveries, reduce

HORNBEAMS BASEMENT POOL, NORTH LONDON

This stunning basement swimming pool complex is located in a multimillion pound new build private residence situated in North London. Commissioned in April 2015, the 19 metre x 4 metre pool was designed and built by Sunderland based Whitewaters for the prestigious private development and features a unique stainless steel lining system from Aquinox. Mick Guthrie of Whitewaters explained: “This was a high specification development and the client had very set ideas about how the finishes should look throughout the property. Having recently swum in a commercial stainless steel pool, that standard of finish was a non-negotiable must-have. This presented quite a problem, as the pool walls formed part of the foundations for the house, and therefore had to be constructed from reinforced concrete. We therefore designed

and created a watertight concrete pool basin which was then lined with stainless steel panels to give the aesthetic qualities that the client desired. “Blue underwater LED lighting was used to complement the steel and the client used subtle dark finishes throughout the pool hall, to create a dramatic effect. “The end result is contemporary and elegant and was achieved within a very reasonable budget.” Finishing touches included a stainless steel water cannon from Golden Coast which perfectly complements the pool lining. ASTRALPOOL’S LINK TO MANUFACTURER ENSURES A COMPLETE SERVICE Although not a new concept in terms of pool construction, AstralPool UK Ltd are breaking new ground in their approach to providing stainless steel pools through their trade customers. Dyfed Thompson-Smith, the company’s General Manager advised the rejuvenated direction over the last 12 months and how AstralPool can add further value to the service they offer the trade by assisting in maximising these opportunities in this niche sector of the UK pool construction market. AstralPool offer a different approach in delivering the product due to its links to the manufacturing source – Metalast – which is part of the Spanish multinational group Fluidra. Both the manufacturing/design (Metalast) and the distribution (AstralPool UK Ltd) capabilities are intrinsically linked, thus offering a significant selling point to pool builders who are tasked with satisfying employers requirements via a contracting route. Architects and specifiers who may be involved with these types of projects can take advantage of this service by drawing on this added value at the relevant stages of design. Pool builders who are looking to deliver these types of projects can utilise the expertise that AstralPool have in stainless steel pools as part of their package, thus ensuring continuity, technical support and

transparent supply chain management. Principal contractors can enjoy the reassurance that they are receiving a solution based on a joint approach between their pool builder and the stainless steel pool manufacturer and distributor alongside all the relevant service providers. This results in all the required members of the design team ensuring that they are ‘round the table’ as early as possible. Representation is provided on a local level by the technical team at AstralPool for day to day discussions, however this can be supplemented by representatives coming over from Spain and in particular Metalast, periodically throughout the design process. This approach and the expertise that the individual parties bring to the table, ensures that the end user is not merely taking ownership of a steel box full of water but rather a solution that is both aesthetically stunning and performs functionally throughout its life cycle. Once it comes to the on-site installation, AstralPool facilitate on behalf of the pool builder, an installation team from Spain who are directly employed by the manufacturers, working alongside dedicated project management personnel. The installation team work to stringent quality standards to ensure that the installation complies fully with any performance specifications and employers’ requirements.

the Home Counties, LSPC’s key territories. Stainless steel pools are increasing in popularity among private and commercial clients and the introduction of the Classic range means LSPC now offers modular and bespoke designs to clients in both sectors. Berndorf Bäderbau’s Classic Modular pool range is available in two designs and sizes: Harmonia is a skimmer pool and Kornos is a level deck pool, and both models are available in 6 x 3 metres and 8 x 4 metres. A major benefit of the Classic Modular pool range is the speed of build. Using Berndorf Bäderbau’s prefabricated stainless steel pool materials and technology speeds up the building process, enabling a pool to be built in less time than it takes using conventional construction methods, allowing clients to have their pool faster. Jamie Smith, Managing Director at London Swimming Pool Company believes that the speed of delivery of stainless steel pools could double the number of luxury pools built in the UK. “We’re building a Classic modular pool for a private client in Surrey which will be completed in just six weeks – that’s quite a record,” said Jamie. LSPC and Berndorf Bäderbau are running a targeted marketing campaign to educate the high-end market about the benefits of stainless steel pools.

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

Alternative Technologies Offer Safe And Effective Sanitisation When it comes to low and no chlorine water treatment options, there’s no shortage of solutions on offer these days. As owners seek alternative, and often gentler ways to treat pool and spa water effectively, new chemical products have been developed and systems such as UV and Ozone have been added to. With the aim of reducing chlorine an important goal for many, we look at some of the options available in 2016 By Karen Witney

A

s far back as in ancient Greek and Sanskrit (India) writings from 2,000 BC, water treatment methods were recommended. In those days the motive for water purification was improved taste because people could not yet distinguish between foul and clean water, not much was known then about microorganisms or chemical contaminants. Skip through the ages to today’s methods and long has chlorine worn the crown as king of pool and spa water sanitisation. Still one of the most effective and cost conscious methods, its place in the hierarchy remains steady but with so many choices in alternative water treatments, the kingdom is being shared by a large number of worthy heirs to the title. Copper and silver ionisation has been with us since the 1950s with salt water chlorination arriving in the 1980s and UV implemented in the last few decades. Beyond this, the leaps and bounds of advancement in treatments is nothing less than staggering. Just review more recent history to see how technology has given us processes that combines the old tried and trusted with the

new. And the result – efficient systems that guarantee clean healthy pool and spa water whether in a high profile commercial facility or in a simple garden pool or hot tub.

WATER THAT SPARKLES LIKE DIAMONDS Elecro’s goal in designing the Quantum was to create the most powerful sanitising product on the market, which delivers optimum results, whilst drastically reducing the consumption of traditional chemicals such as chlorine. The Quantum uses UV and Nano Crystal technology to create a Photocatalytic reaction, and Hydroxyl Radicals as a by-product. The key benefits that differentiate the Quantum from the rest is that the photocatalytic oxidisation is the most powerful oxidising agent available

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

With the Quantum, Elecro have provided a powerful sanitiser that delivers optimum results

pool owner the assurance of using a water steriliser stronger and more effective than any other treatment. Safe, comfortable swimming experience with physical benefits: as the reaction is contained and no by-product is released from the chamber, the pure, fresh water does not create bad odours and taste, itchy eyes, irritable skin and respiratory problems such as asthma – normally associated with chemical use. Aesthetic improvements: recent tests have shown that there is a physical improvement in water clarity when using the Quantum, creating water that sparkles like diamonds, for ultimate pool luxury.

to date, obliterating all harmful pollutants in its path, even those such as naegleria fowleri, adenovirus and cryptosporidium that can cause severe sickness and are resistant to traditional chemicals; secondly it is the only technology available that has the ability to break down organics such as urea and sun tan oil converting them back into their harmless molecular form. This technology has the power to turn sewerage waste into drinking water, so the moment that water is released from the unit it is free of all harmful pollutants, and does not need any additional sanitisation. The only reason Elecro continue to recommend a dose of traditional chemical is to protect the water from any new pollutant that could enter the pool before it is routed back through the sanitising circuit; it also ensures that the pool sides, floor and static furniture are kept sanitised and free from bacteria. The key reasons why this exciting technology will benefit your customers are: Saves the pool owner time and money: a one-off, affordable purchase in a single integrated unit, reducing the cost and inconvenience of stock chemicals. Consumes no more electricity to run than a common light bulb, and as consequence of the supreme sanitising results, chemical consumption is reduced. There is also the option of a peristaltic dosing pump to shock dose the pool automatically when required. Most efficient sanitising technology: unlike traditional UV, which only neutralises the DNA of harmful pollutants to prevent them from reproducing, the Quantum oxidises physically destroying any bacteria, viruses or micro-organisms, even those that are resistant to traditional chemicals; giving the

Chlorine has long been a staple of pool maintenance. However, while it may be highly effective in killing off harmful organisms, there’s no denying that some of its chemical properties are far from desirable. Conversely, saltwater chlorination requires less maintenance than a traditionally sanitised set-up and there are no hazardous chemicals to handle and store. All it needs is occasional topping up with salt. Golden Coast boasts an extensive catalogue of products, ideal for optimising new and existing pools to an owner’s exact requirements, including no- and low-chlorine pool treatments. One such product is the Waterco Hydrochlor Saltwater Chlorinator, which uses salt and electrolysis to sanitise water. The result is clean, clear, safe bathing water that pool owners have come to expect, but without

the ‘chlorine smell’ and irritated eyes that are sometimes associated with traditional chemical dosing systems. Plumbed directly in line with the pool equipment, the robust Hydrochlor offers many economic and convenient advantages. The inbuilt Ezy Timer matches the device’s operation to lifestyle and preferences, while an energy-saving winter mode protects the pump if no water flow is detected in the Salt Cell. Additionally, a Self Clean feature prevents calcium build-up on the cell’s electrodes.

A PURE AND FRIENDLY ADVANCE IN WATER TREATMENT The E-Clear system from Pure Friendly is an advanced Oxygen and Mineral Fresh Water technology which provides pure and healthy water with high levels of Oxygen for swimming pools, hydrotherapy pools and more. The system is also EPA rated as 100% ecologically and environmentally friendly. Patented 100% chlorine free, salt free, toxic free, bacteria free water purification and sterilisation technology exceeds the effects of boiling water and results in the total elimination of all algae, bacteria and a host of viruses including cryptosporidium whilst still providing the required oxidation to qualify as a stand-alone 100% toxic-free fresh water sanitiser system. Pure Friendly technology is the only proven system which has been available for over ten years which does not require chlorine, bromine or salt and unlike chlorine and salt chlorination does not produce carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) or trihalomethanes such as chloroform or bromoform. Since the mid1970s when DBPs were first discovered in chlorinated tap water, the EPA has stepped in to restrict levels of these chemicals, some of which, like trihalomethanes, have been linked to cancer, miscarriages, reproductive problems, and other diseases. for a healthy, balanced and environmentally friendly mineral-enriched swimming pool: • Zodiac Patented MagnaPool™ minerals – which dissolve in the pool water. • Zodiac Crystal Clear – glass crystals filter medium which provides ultra-fine filtration. • Zodiac Hydroxinator – an exclusive water treatment unit that purifies water automatically by hydroxination. The self-contained system is easy to use and provides exceptionally clear water without adding any sanitising chemicals. The intense clarity is made possible by combining two innovative factors. Firstly, the powerful natural clarifying properties of magnesium in MagnaPool™ minerals and secondly, exceptionally fine filtration using Crystal

CREATING A HEAVENLY SPA WITH UV DISINFECTION

Located in Nusa Dua, Bali, Westin Resort’s luxurious Heavenly Spa includes wet treatment rooms with steam showers, a hair salon, an indoor lounge and separate male and female wet areas with salt saunas, aroma steam baths and vitality pools. As the water treatment regime in spas is so exacting, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is often used as the cleanest technology available. Not only does UV destroy harmful microorganisms in the water, enabling controlled chlorination that avoids adverse dosing, it also breaks down the irritant chloramine by-products of the treatment process. This ensures the air around the spa is clear, without the industrial ‘chlorine’ smell often associated with heavily chlorinated water. Based on extensive experience providing UV systems to high-end spas, Hanovia was selected by Barr & Wray, the main contractor, to provide the UV disinfection system. The Hanovia system features an automated wiping system that cleans the system and prevents the build-up of residues on the UV lamp. Adding UV to the spa’s water treatment regime not only gets rid of harmful chlorine by-products but also saves money on the reduction of chlorine used. This reduction in chlorine usage is a real benefit, as it potentially reduces costs and makes the backwash water discharge more environmentally friendly. Added

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH Clear glass media. When swimming pool water is treated manually, the concentration of chlorine varies between each addition. This generates fluctuations that can adversely affect treatment effectiveness and bathing comfort. With MagnaPool™, the natural purifying properties generated by the Hydroxinator act gently and constantly, without the saw-tooth effect. Result: continuously disinfected and healthy water that is perfectly balanced.

ATG UV ADDRESS THE DANGERS OF CHEMICALLY RESISTANT MICROORGANISMS With a number of emerging pathogens displaying increased resistance to chlorine disinfection, the aquatics industry is tightening up their already stringent safety standards and specifications. Waterborne microorganisms are responsible for a range of potentially fatal outbreaks and illnesses. It is therefore the fundamental objective of swimming pool operators to eliminate microorganisms from facilities to overcome this problem and protect bathers. Ultraviolet (UV) treatment is widely adopted within the industry as a cost effective and realistic solution to these issues. UV systems protect against chlorine resistant micro-organisms and reduce combined chlorine levels, which are the cause of unpleasant smells, red eyes, asthma, contamination from by-products and chemical structural damage. atg UV Technology’s new WF range, known as the ‘Wafer’ due to its ultra-compact footprint, is the most compact UV system available in the market today. At around a third of the size of comparative UV systems, with significantly reduced maintenance space and improved performance, it offers easy to install and retrofit solutions that fit the tightest of plant rooms. TOTAL WATER PRODUCTS STILL STARVING PHOSPHATES WITH STARVER For many years Lo-Chlor Chemicals has been recognised as the global leader in phosphate removal, which began in the mid 1990’s with the launch of Starver®. By reducing phosphates and eliminating algae we reduce the demand for chlorine as a sanitiser; therefore pools can operate over a season with much lower levels of chorine consumption. Starver® technology is now sold in over 50 countries worldwide and its popularity has become recognised as the most revolutionary and effective speciality chemical to reach the pool and spa market to date. Developed in Australia in 2013, and now successfully manufactured in the UK, Starver® efficiently reduces high levels of phosphates before switching back to using the original Starver® as the ongoing preventative maintenance treatment. The

the most compact system on the market its hydraulically optimised design and leading polychromatic lamp technology also makes it one of the most efficient and best performing. As a minimum, the WF range will provide a 99.9% reduction of chlorine resistant microorganisms, such as cryptosporidium and giardia. This next generation of UV system design has taken the market by storm, with leisure contractors and operators commenting on its unique design and performance: “The UV equivalent of the smart phone,” said

proprietary blend of rare earth compounds effectively acts as a ‘shock treatment’ for high levels of phosphate (above 1.5ppm) and will neutralise and remove dissolved phosphate within 24 hours. This highly concentrated formulation is uniquely formulated and removes higher levels of phosphate than any other product. Starver® features and benefits include: • Removes up to 6ppm of phosphates • Natural composition of unique polymers and rare earth compounds • Enhances water clarity within 24 hours • Increases efficiency of sanitisers • No need to vacuum (does not settle in the pool) • Compatible with all pool treatments and equipment.

COMMERCIAL POOLS

Money Savers And Revenue Generators In a category where the competitors all offer essentially the same giant white box of water, the Aquatic Training Vessels™ (ATVs) from Marquis have dramatically reshaped the look and direction for the industry

Products to help improve efficiency and save money are important for all pool owners, but especially for those in the commercial sector. For many of them, equally as important are the products that maximise the use of existing facilities and attract more of the paying public. Our ‘money savers and revenue generators’ is a must read for anyone operating a commercial pool By Jon Wadeson

R

unning a successful commercial swimming pool has never been an easy or cheap task, but thankfully we live in times where technology, innovation and choice are helping more than ever before. Budget pressures mean commercial operators need to be aware of all the available options to always save money or increase revenues but thankfully, with the right advice, there are always solutions on offer that will assist. Whether it’s to enhance facilities, improve green credentials or optimise efficiency, this issue, we take a look at five products that can help commercial operators improve their ‘bottom lines’ in the years ahead.

Certikin’s OC-1 filter media significantly reduces running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller

1) CERAMIFLO – BUILD AND RUN A COMMERCIAL POOL FOR LESS! was to ensure that its water treatment system was capable of providing the best quality water for the five new pools, plus any future increase in demand, but it also needed to be water, chemical and energy efficient, and be contained within a small plant area. The Ceramiflo system, designed and installed by Provital Solutions, with its compact design and modular construction was the perfect solution. With ceramic microfiltration membranes, Ceramiflo was able to filter the water to 3 microns, with an impressive turbidity of 0.2 NTU. Its fully automated backwash requires 30% of the water required by traditional sand filters, a significant saving in water and energy costs. In addition, the ceramic membranes do not require renewal like traditional filter media, ensuring consistently exceptional water quality over the long term. Its fully automatic cleaning capabilities, along with remote monitoring and control, minimise operator time, providing savings on staff costs too. “We wanted to build the most modern and energy efficient The Ceramiflo system, with its compact design and modular construction was the perfect solution for the Randers Leisure Centre in Denmark swimming pool in Denmark. The Installing a Ceramiflo microfiltration system not only delivers significant cost savings during the construction phase, it continues to save money throughout its use due to its significantly lower use of energy, chemicals and water compared to traditional filtration systems. The remarkably small footprint required by the Ceramiflo saves on plant room space, enabling revenue generating floor space to be maximised. All this, whilst providing the cleanest and clearest water you’ll ever see! Ceramiflo was selected for the newly built Randers Leisure Centre in Denmark. The main objective for the centre design team

project was originally specified with regular sand filters, but when we came across the ceramic filters from Provital Solutions we were immediately convinced that this was the right solution for us. The compact design of the filters allowed us to downsize the basement area and save a lot of construction costs, but the decisive factor was the low consumption of water and energy,” said Anders Skak, CEO of Gribskov Gruppen A/S. Exclusively distributed in the UK by Total Pool Filtration, Ceramiflo is suitable for both new and retrofit projects. Total Pool Filtration 01829 740290 www.totalpoolfiltration.uk

2) CERTIKIN’S OC-1 FILTER MEDIA REDUCES RUNNING COSTS Since Certikin announced its worldwide exclusive distributorship of the ground breaking OC-1 in January, the filter media has acquired a growing fan base and is now being used and tested in over 40 countries worldwide. Unlike traditional methods that use entrapment, OC-1 works through settlement and harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers.

SPN August 2016 65 26/07/2016 10:10

COMMERCIAL POOLS The new British manufactured filtration media has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1, it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. Some of OC-1’s outstanding key benefits include: • Reduces energy consumption – OC-1 maintains constant flow rates, even when the media becomes dirty. No downtime is required for heating/salt chlorinators/heat pumps going out on low flow. The constant flow means pumps can be run at lower speeds, thus saving energy. • Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass. • Reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash – reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating. There is no need to backwash on start up with new installations. • Lightweight – Can even be shipped inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install. • Less maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment. • Payback typically 6-12 months. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “Since the launch of OC-1 we have had great feedback on the product and have good results with new installations going in every week. OC-1 is a change in mindset from using traditional media as the speed of water through the bed is critical. This is true for both domestic and commercial applications and we have found that getting the speed right produces fabulous results.” Certikin International Ltd 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

3) EVA OPTIC MAKES LIGHT WORK – IN AND OUT OF THE POOL Developed to meet the exacting demands of swimming’s elite athletes, Eva Optic’s range of LED pool lighting provides excellent performance and economy for both competition and recreational applications. Available in the UK, exclusively through Golden Coast, EVA Optic’s indoor LED lighting technology has been specially engineered to withstand the harsh pool environment. The company is the first and only manufacturer to provide downlighters with a chlorine-resistant coating, which protects them from the chemical’s corrosive, lifeshortening effects. Meanwhile, its underwater lights are pressure-tested to 16 bar and can cope with depths up to 25 metres. Extreme heat levels near the roof of a pool facility can damage LED technology, but, thanks to EVA Optic’s self-regulating heat control, this high-efficiency lighting is protected against overheating and the risk of premature failure. Crucially, EVA Optic’s performance matches its outstanding engineering. Its comprehensive range includes lighting for sports halls and meets international swimming’s stringent requirements. Its unique micro-prism technology pairs optimal visibility a very low glare rate (UGR < 19). Also suitable for domestic pools, EVA Optic offers RGBW lighting options which provide a complete solution: above and below the water. Importantly, EVA Optic can be controlled remotely by owners – allowing them to transform their pool in just a few seconds. EVA can be controlled via laptop, tablet or even smartphones – meeting every customer’s preference. EVA’s high-efficiency ambient lighting is suitable for use throughout a facility. It exceeds international competition standards for many sports courts and is a cost-effective solution for changing rooms, lobbies and corridors, too. Shaun Adams, a Director for Golden Coast, says: “LED technology is making sports lighting brighter and more energy efficient than ever before, both in and out of the pool.

After Hippo Leisure installed interactive play equipment at Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre’s pool, visitor numbers increased by more than 100% year-on-year

It gives sporting facilities the competitive advantage – resulting in substantial savings. LED lighting consumes as much as 87.5% less power than halogen lights of comparable performance. And with a life span of more than 60,000 hours, they last much longer – meaning further savings of time and money spent on maintenance. Typically, an investment in EVA’s LED lighting system can be earned back within three to five years.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

State-Of-The-Art Recuperation And Treatment Police Treatment Centre – Castlebrae in Auchterarder, Perthshire

P

roviding recuperation and treatment to serving and retired police officers, The Police Treatment Centre at Auchterarder prides itself on the quality of its facilities. Having undertaken a comprehensive review of these facilities it took the decision to upgrade and add to them in early 2012. Unfortunately, due to the costs being above their budget, the plans were shelved until 2014 when Competition Pool Solutions were invited to meet with the trustees of the centre, to present their design and build offering. Over the following 12 months Competition Pool Solutions worked with the staff at the centre to formulate and design a new scheme, which involved the refurbishment of their existing facilities and the addition of a state-of-the-art wet leisure offering. Due to their knowledge and experience of designing and building such projects, Competition Pool Solutions, were able to offer the facilities the centre wanted, at a cost which was £650,000 less than the original cost quoted in 2012. Based on the revised costs of £2.1m, the trustees of the centre gave the go ahead for the works to proceed in early 2015. The facilities to be provided consisted of a new leisure building comprising of a large swimming pool (15m x 7.5m), a hydrotherapy pool (6m x 4m), sauna and steam room, together with new wet changing facilities. Competition Pool Solutions were responsible for both the design and management of the whole project from start to finish and as part of

their remit, had to identify and appoint both a main contractor for the principal works together with a subcontractor for the specialist pool works. Through a vigorous selection process, to ensure that the cost of the project was kept within budget, Marshall Construction Ltd were appointed as the main contractor and John Preston Pools Ltd were appointed to undertake the specialist pool works. The construction works began in May 2015 and were completed to budget in April 2016 – taking a total of 46 weeks. The centre now has a superb range of wet leisure facilities for the treatment and recuperation of their clients. The swimming pool and hydrotherapy pool, constructed and finished by John Preston Pools, gives the centre’s clients the perfect space to exercise and relax, with the knowledge that the design has incorporated first class water treatment from AstralPool and environmental controls from Recotherm. The custom made sauna and steam room, is a stunning addition to the facility, one which the clients now use daily to help their treatment and recuperation. The General Manager of the Centre, Paul Grant said: “We now have state-of-the-art, first class facilities to offer to our clients, one which we thought we would never get, until Competition Pool Solutions started working with us. Throughout the project we have worked closely with their team from initial designs to the detailed designs,

Calorex Creates A Splash In Poland A set of four specialist Calorex heat pumps are efficiently maintaining optimum water temperatures at a new waterpark in Poland. The water attraction, which opened in Ruda Śląska last summer, features a 312m² swimming pool and an 840m² recreational pool, which are both heated by Calorex ProPac heat pumps. In fact, it is estimated that the waterpark is saving around 64% on heating costs by using heat pumps opposed to gas heating. Paweł Waligórski from JP Spolka, Calorex’s long-established Polish distributor for swimming pool heat pumps and dehumidifiers, explained: “Last season the waterpark cost 45,000 zlotys to heat. We estimate that to heat the same amount of water by gas would cost around 126,000 zlotys for the season. The savings are huge.” Heat pumps are recognised as a highly sustainable way to heat swimming pool water dynamically, saving on both energy and operating costs. Typically, Calorex Pro-Pac units offer up to 334% savings on operating costs and a 50% reduction in carbon compared to fossil fuel boilers.

The temperature of the recreational pool at the waterpark is maintained by three Pro-Pac 140 units and a ProPac 70 was specified to meet the requirements of the smaller swimming pool. JP Spolka were instrumental in planning and designing the new waterpark facility, as Paweł explained: “During the planning stages, we performed simulations of heating power demand and calculated the estimated costs. We then used these figures to decide on the most effective means of heating the water and provided all the relevant equipment. We also perform a minimum of two services per year at the beginning and the end of the season.” Calorex Pro-Pac commercial heat pumps are specifically designed to provide heating

Rabia Yasmeen, Research Analyst at Euromonitor International commented: “Hotel and resort spas are most common in this region. UAE hotels report 60% of total spa visitors are residents who are not otherwise staying on the property. Hotels are now leasing spaces for more spa related services as the demand increases.” Yasmeen continued: “Compared to the US and Asia, current spa market leaders around the world, spas in the Middle East in particular are associated with more luxurious and therapeutic experiences. The trend towards health and wellness and medical tourism in this region is expanding. Health focused tourists usually spend more than 130% compared to the regular traveller as they seek such experiences as part of leisure activities. There is now greater demand for experiences ranged over two to seven nights, health and wellness programmes, meditation, cosmetic treatments, and

thematic environments similar to the Asian market.” The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) has previously identified Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa as the fastest growing spa markets in the world. Euromonitor forecasts that the Middle East and Africa spa market will grow by 21.6% from 2015 until 2019. In light of the spa market boom, the only event dedicated to the leisure industry in the Middle East and Africa, The Leisure Show, will be co-located for the first time in 2016 with Piscine Middle East, bringing the region’s largest pool and spa supply event to Dubai (previously held in Abu Dhabi). Free online registration for The Leisure Show (www.theleisureshow.com) and Piscine Middle East (www.piscinemiddleeast.com) is now open. The events will take place 17-19 September 2016 at the Dubai World Trade Centre and are co-located with The Hotel Show.

IN BRIEF SPLASH! ASIA RETURNS TO SINGAPORE IN SEPTEMBER Interpoint Events is again organising the SPLASH! Asia event in Singapore and a new development for this edition is that it will be held as part of the larger Architecture & Building Services (ABS) Show, which takes place 28 September to 30 at Marina Bay Sands. SPLASH! Asia was first held in 2011 and has seen the emergence of a genuine pool and spa industry in Asia. The industry has a different profile to other trade shows around the world though, one which is weighted towards the commercial sector, and the partnership with ABS will mean architects, builders and developers – the key decisions makers – are better accessed.

‘My NIVEKO Pool’ Highlights Bespoke Solutions The ideal swimming pool is the one that accommodates all of the preferences and wishes of a client. More often than not though, a prefabricated model from mass production won’t meet these needs, but an individual and bespoke pool from NIVEKO can. Available on the company’s website, ‘My NIVEKO Pool’ illustrates real projects from all over Europe and provides authentic stories along with the reasons behind choosing a NIVEKO custom-built concrete monopool. The stunning holiday resort of Landal Eifeler Tor is one such example. The Resort is suited in the peaceful ‘National Park Town’ of Heimbach in the Eifel region of Germany, an area that offers visitors everything they need for an amazing holiday. The Eifel boasts numerous beautiful locations and situated on the side of one of the many hills, the Landal Eifeler Tor Resort undoubtedly occupies one of the finest and enjoys breath-taking views over the Rur river valley. In the Resort, NIVEKO’s indoor and outdoor pools are some of the most important places for visitors to the holiday park. The architects from the Netherlands suggested having a natural overflow

pool outside and a modern overflow pool inside. The indoor pool is built around a concrete wall and every half an hour, the rounded seat bench provide a surprise water attraction for guests with blowers providing a nice whirlpool experience. In addition to these two main pools, families with toddlers also have the choice of an outdoor paddling pool as well as indoor one. All four pools, which were prepared at NIVEKO and finished in Heimbach, were delivered in trucks and assembled in a very short time once on site. Using this method greatly reduced any disruption and saved months of work at the site. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

OPINION

“Wet Leisure For Dummies” – There’s No Such Book

“If you look across the entire sweep of the wet leisure industry, it encompasses a whole raft of skills, technical know-how and areas of specialist knowledge. It’s time that we recognised that and invested in it,” says Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams

W

e live in a world where higher education is increasingly valued. And not just in terms of tuition fees. Last year over half a million people embarked on a degree level course in the UK and it sometimes seems as if you can have a degree in just about anything. In the business world, training courses that support agreed career development paths are a common part of the relationship between employer and employee. Investing in people is a familiar and valued part of the business landscape. But we work in an industry where, with the exception of the ISPE specific qualifications and training, courses are relatively few and far between. We also work in an industry that is becoming more and more technically advanced. Ten or 20 years ago, a few plumbing skills and the same sort of knowledge as might be shared with the average builder would have been enough to see you through most projects. As we all know, that is far from the truth these days.

“ADAMS. ARE YOU LISTENING, BOY?” I can still recall sitting in my first assembly at comprehensive school and hearing another lad getting ticked off for not paying attention and watching people playing cricket outside while the headmaster was explaining the world of opportunity that lay at our feet through a good education. As they say, hindsight is an exact science and I guess most of us will admit to wishing they had tried harder during their formative years and although that’s in the past, we still have the opportunity to learn.

And we have the opportunity to help others to learn. The appetite for knowledge and training in our industry is growing and I think the attitude to retaining your staff by investing in them is changing. Finding and keeping good people is reported as one of the key challenges for successful businesses in our industry and employers are now realising that training their staff is a good way to keep them, not lose them.

FULL MARKS As a company we, Golden Coast, spend a lot of time putting together training visits to suppliers, writing articles, filming and editing YouTube footage for ‘Andy’s Answers’ and tailoring training sessions to meet customers’ specific needs. We wouldn’t do that if there wasn’t a demand for it. It isn’t only technical and product support that we provide. In the not too distant future, the new GC web site will contain a library of articles on marketing and business advice specific to the wet leisure industry that the trade can use to their benefit. Of course, we are not alone in thinking this way. The ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) is working at getting a range of CPD courses set up within the industry. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the term used to describe the learning activities professionals engage in to develop and enhance their skills and abilities. CPD combines different ways of learning such as training workshops, conferences, events and e-learning programmes. There are over 1,000 institutes and professional bodies across the UK who are already running these certified programmes.

The appetite for knowledge and training in our industry is growing and I think the attitude to retaining your staff by investing in them is changing” 80 August 2016 SPN 80_SPN_Aug_16_Opinion.indd 80

SPATEX has long been a source of new knowledge and training with the range of presentations and seminars that the Show has offered and I am aware that next year they will be increasing the offering for people looking to learn. It looks as if the whole industry is starting to wise up about training.

WHEN DO WE GET THE RESULTS? As Ivern Ball said ‘Knowledge is power but enthusiasm pulls the switch’. Our industry is quickly coming to see the benefits of greater knowledge, better skills and improved training. As that attitude spreads, people will see the benefits that it brings and move to follow suit. I think that industry standard qualifications and better training will make the wet leisure industry a more attractive career prospect. We’ll get better people wanting to join our businesses. When you offer training and career development you reward and motivate your staff. Those skills are more likely to stay in your business; those skilled people are more likely to want to stay working for you. Pool equipment, spas and saunas are becoming more complicated, more technically advanced. Your business needs to train staff better simply to stay in business. Add improved marketing and customer service skills into the mix and you begin to see a powerful industry that is taking control of its own destiny even in these uncertain times. There is no single ‘magic bullet’ that can transform any business into a highly successful one but a well skilled, well trained workforce is clearly going to be a massive competitive advantage. No one is going to have to go back to school to work that one out. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
