Farmbnb is the first platform that connects people with unused land and farmers to create a sustainable farming network and community. The platform allows you to list unused spaces to farmers so they can manage them and produce a variety of foods that will be consumed locally. The purpose is to rehabilitate unused structures or spaces for the good of our planet and our health.

CREATIVE INSIGHT Food insecurity is a big health threat facing humanity. We see it in places like Puerto Rico whose food sources are mostly determined by imported goods. During the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters like Hurricane Maria and power outages, the people of Puerto Rico are faced with the reality of food shortages or food being kept hostage in their ports.

There is also the resurgence of interest in the newer digitally driven generations to cultivate and create a healthy and sustainable way to access food. Yet, they don’t always have the resources to buy their own land to achieve their goal. We saw their creativity and interest grow during the pandemic, and see an opportunity to help. Strengthening local food production through small scale agriculture is appropriate in ensuring that in any future crisis communities have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
We will partner with the World Health Organization and Airbnb, the US company that operates an online marketplace for vacation rentals, to create a platform where hosts and farmers can come together to combat food insecurity. The platform will provide farmers with a new way to search for available land for their crop production and for people to rent land they have like their patios, roofs, and any unused spaces so that land can be developed for agriculture. This will provide the means for a more sustainable production to mitigate climate impacts and support more nutritious diets. This new way of thinking about small-scale agriculture gives new generations the ability to develop spaces to create a healthy and sustainable food system, but it also provides people with unused land additional income.
Airbnb will help provide the platform where hosts and farmers choose to create a free account via website or mobile app so they can list their space and book unused land for agriculture use. Hosts will be able to share images and a summary of their rental to farmers. Farmers will also be able to receive alerts on available spaces near them. Content and spaces will be curated for farmers with any information pertinent to the land alongside the launch of a digital campaign to create buzz and recruit farmers and hosts. There will also be a provided space for farmers to sell their produce, taking the idea full circle. With time, the platform will be a key factor in the bettering of communities, their health, and access to food.
