You have, no doubt, heard the axiom “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Of course, this is true in your daily personal interactions, but it’s perhaps even more important in the world of business. A first impression has the potential to make or break a business deal so it’s important to get it right the first time. Humans are capable of forming an opinion of an individual faster than you may think. According to an article on Forbes.com, it takes only seven seconds for a person to establish an idea about the type of person you are, and further research suggests it may take less than a second - you read that correct, less than one second - to develop a sense of certain traits like trustworthiness and work ethic. Fortunately, there are a few simple actions you can take to increase your chances of making a good impression, whether you’re meeting with a potential new client or helping new applicants find their dream jobs. REMEMBER TO SMILE While dressing the part is a no-brainer, many times we neglect a valuable accessory - a smile. When meeting someone very often people will focus on their appearance, go over their notes, and try to be confident and intelligent, all good things to do. However, we forget to approach a new person with a smile, reverting to our neutral face which, psychologists have determined, often communicate unintended emotions to others like anger or even shame. In other words, you may be happy as a clam to meet someone new behind your neutral face, but the person on the other end of your handshake may think your meeting with him/her is the last place on earth you want to be. NO DEAD FISH HANDSHAKES Speaking of handshakes, make sure you give a
good one. Nothing is more off-putting than a weak, lifeless handshake. When meeting with a business associate, you want to project a sense of confidence and trust which is communicated effectively with a firm handshake. Whenever possible, be the first one to extend your hand and shake up and down no more than three times. Additionally, a proper handshake should last no longer than five seconds. BE INTERESTED IN THE OTHER PERSON Nothing is more frustrating than meeting a new business contact and immediately getting hit with a sales pitch. Instead, ask questions about his/her needs, and goals and look for common interests to help establish a rapport. As the conversation progresses, be a listener rather than a talker. They will appreciate the opportunity to share their needs and goals with you and, chances are, you’ll pick up clues along the way to help solve their problem when you make your pitch later in the conversation. EYE CONTACT & BODY LANGUAGE Lastly, once you’ve made the proper introductions and the conversation is underway, eye contact and good body language are crucial in building rapport. Lean forward and maintain your focus on them as you listen to them and ask related questions during the conversation. This helps establish a relationship and signals to the other person you care about learning about them and their needs.

SHOUTOUTS! “Congratulations to Team Birmingham for achieving yet another record-high billing! I’m so proud of you all! Great teamwork during a very difficult time.” Renee Rives Vice President of Sales “Even though I’m the one who created the Shoutouts in Temp Times, I haven’t gotten around to sending out a shoutout until now. However, I wanted to take a moment to thank LaTayna Brown and Angela Ford for their willingness to help me out whenever I’m out of the office. LaTayna and Angela handled the Job Application report and LaTayna did an excellent job creating and posting content on Facebook while I was on vacation earlier this week! It’s good to know when this one-man marketing shop needs a breather, I have a couple of friends I can count on to make sure important processes don’t miss a beat. Y’all are the best!” Loyd McIntosh Marketing Manager
