JANUARY A time for new beginnings and a chance to reflect on your year.

Every day is a gift - what are you going to do with it? What are you filling your cup with emotionally, physically and spiritually?

This edition is full of cozy January coolness - between the Lion’s Annual Winter Carnival to cozy Crock Pot recipes - January is a chance to embrace winter and all its intention to slow you down and enjoy the season of “hibernal solstice”. Winter Solstice happened December 21st and it marked the “shortest period of daylight” - so some like to call this season following it the “re-birth of the Sun” - how appropriate.

When so many like to make New Years resolutions, it can be said that this is the time you no longer “live in the dark” and shine your brightest light...

Another person that shone his light on so many, was Local resident Jack Lown. It is with great sadness, that we share his passing Dec 12th. He has been a much loved contributor of the Backroads, bringing joy to everyone with his endearing and witty cartoons (see more on page 15). My heart goes out to his family and his wife Helen.

My wish for everyone this New Year is to live with intention, create joyful experiences and live outside your comfort zone so you can look back on your life and feel nothing but magnificent memories!

What Is Manifesta on?

Manifesta on refers to the holis c approach of bringing ideas to life by using quantum theory law of a rac on techniques to help remove limi ng beliefs and nega ve thought pa erns in the mental space. Individuals who use these techniques believe that by changing thoughts and emo ons and truly believing that what they want is already theirs, they can manifest new reali es from the quantum field, or the energy of the universe.

The simplest explana on of quantum theory is that the universe is made of energy. People who prac ce quantum law of a rac on manifesta on believe that by visualizing what they want and aligning their energy with the energy of the universe, their desire will happen in their everyday life.

Manifesta on Defini on The defini on of manifesta on is based on the theory of quantum physics that everything in the universe is energy. People who prac ce manifesta on believe that the mind is a powerful tool. By aligning their energy with universal energy, they can manifest what they want in life. Specific manifesta on and law of a rac on techniques can vary from person to person.

However, the underlying goal in all manifesta on techniques is to mentally release nega ve thoughts and feelings and replace them with posi ve beliefs and posi ve ac on. A person can do this through visualizing, journaling inten ons and desires, and reci ng posi ve affirma ons. When someone visualizes what they want and trusts that their desires will manifest, they may naturally start to take posi ve ac ons in life that bring them closer to their goals.

Is Manifesta on Real?

There is no scien fic proof that manifesta on works in terms of individuals simply wishing something into existence. However, some research suggests that people may manifest posi ve things by believing they have the ability to do so. This means if a person believes they can achieve a goal such as landing a dream job or purchasing a home, they’re willing to take the necessary steps to make their dreams a reality.

For example, if a person wants to manifest a new job and they believe it will happen, they may ins nc vely use habitual ac on and exhibit determina on to move closer to their goal. Whether it’s waking up each morning and submi ng resumes to poten al employers or taking

business courses to sharpen their skills, these ac ons have the power to poten ally manifest posi ve results.

The Surprising Science of Manifesta on The science behind manifesta on pertains to the idea that replacing nega ve thoughts and feelings with posi ve thoughts and habitual ac on can naturally lead to posi ve results. In scien fic terms, the manifesta on process requires ac on on an individual’s part if they want to successfully achieve their goals.

What Is the Scien fic Evidence Behind Manifesta on?

No scien fic studies confirm that manifesta on or the law of a rac on is real or that a person can manifest an idea with their mind. However, some researchers suggest that posi ve thoughts promote posi ve ac ons.(9) If a person has an idea or belief that they are des ned for success, they may feel confident and behave in a way that aligns with achieving their desires.

The quantum theory law of a rac on states that a person’s beliefs can affect their reality. When prac cing manifesta on, a person may be able to create a “placebo effect” in their subconscious mind and physical body. They use visualiza on to create a clear picture of their desire in their minds and imagine how they would truly feel in the moment if their wish were to materialize.(10) The Placebo Effect The placebo effect in manifesta on refers to the idea that the mind can create reality by believing the reality they desire already exists. For example, if a person wants to manifest a new car, they might use the placebo effect technique to trick their mind into believing the car already exists.

The first step in crea ng the placebo effect is to use the mind to visualize a specific desire. Once the image of the desire is deeply ingrained, the individual must then create the feeling within their physical body that having that material desire manifests.

Quantum Theory Quantum theory states that everything in the universe is made of energy.

When someone declares an inten on and prac ces manifesta on techniques to align their energy with universal energy, they can naturally tap into the gi s of the universe.

There are several quantum theory manifesta on techniques. These include journaling, deep visualiza on, and medita on. The belief behind quantum theory is that everything an individual senses already exists in the universe. By u lizing manifesta on techniques to visualize a specific desire and crea ng an internal belief that the desire is already fulfilled, quantum theory states that material manifesta on can be achieved.(11) The Law of A rac on The law of a rac on is one of the most well-known manifesta on prac ces that u lizes quantum theory techniques to bring visions and thoughts to reality. People who prac ce the law of a rac on believe that thoughts are energy atoms that can be manipulated to create a specific reality.(12) In simpler terms, the law of a rac on states that what an individual thinks or feels determines their reality, whether the thoughts or feelings are posi ve or nega ve.

For example, a person who is struggling financially may choose to believe and create the feeling that they are financially secure and surrounded by abundance. The law of a rac on dictates that this person can create the reality of abundance by simply believing it is so.(13) How Does Manifesta on Work?

The theory behind how manifesta on works is that by focusing thoughts, feelings, and ac ons on a specific goal, the law of a rac on will help bring forth the desired outcome. People use manifesta on techniques such as si ng in medita on, reci ng posi ve affirma ons, journaling, and visualizing to help solidify their beliefs and inten ons in their subconscious mind.

Once the ideas are deeply ingrained, the person will release control over the

outcome and allow the universe to make their desired situa on happen naturally.

Research has shown that maintaining a posi ve perspec ve and a belief in one’s own abili es can help create posi ve change, which can cause lifelong dreams and desires to manifest How Posi ve Thinking Can Help You Reach Your Goals Prac cing posi ve thinking and using techniques such as reci ng affirma ons and visualizing can help individuals shi from nega ve thinking to posi ve. Over me, the prac ce of posi ve thinking can affect every aspect of everyday life, allowing for a new reality to take hold.

When a person commits to thinking posi vely and believes deep down that their goals are a ainable, this can lead them to ins nc vely take ac ons toward manifes ng a new reality.

Thinking posi vely can help improve self-esteem, which in turn can give a person the confidence boost they need to go for what they want in life.

Posi ve thinking isn’t a magical cure for self-esteem issues or mental health problems. However, the prac ce encourages individuals to look at life with op mism and stop nega ve thoughts and self-doubt from interfering with their goals Will Manifes ng Help Me Get My Dream Job? While prac cing manifesta on can’t guarantee that an individual will land their dream job, it may help them take habitual ac on to achieve their goals.

Manifes ng techniques such as visualiza on and prac cing posi ve thinking can help a person halt nega ve beliefs that may be hindering their overall chance at success.

When a person commits to a manifesta on process and chooses to believe that good things can happen with the power of posi ve thinking, they may be able to open their world to new opportuni es.

However, it’s important to remember that manifes ng is not magic, so the individual must ac vely par cipate in their own manifes ng process. In rela on to achieving a dream job, the person can take steps such as sending out resumes, contac ng prospec ve employers, and building their skill set to match the job’s specific requirements.

Can Prac cing Manifesta on Boost Posi ve Emo ons?

The science behind manifesta on suggests that posi ve emo ons, thoughts, and energy may help individuals a ract posi vity in their lives. When someone feels happy and content in their world, their posi ve emo ons are naturally boosted.

While it’s natural for individuals to feel all types of emo ons, ranging from sadness to ela on, choosing to be posi ve is an important part of any manifesta on process. By staying posi ve when prac cing manifesta on and pu ng trust in the universe or a higher power, individuals may ins nc vely feel op mis c when they look toward the future.

When You Manifest Posi ve Things, You Get Posi ve Outcomes When a person chooses to let go of their limi ng beliefs and nega ve feelings and work toward manifes ng good things in their everyday life, they may achieve posi ve results. CROCKPOT RECIPES Mac & Cheese

Ingredients 1 lb. uncooked elbow macaroni 2 c. half/half, 1/2 c unsalted bu er, melted 8 oz. cheddar, grated (about 2 cups) 8 oz. Monterey jack, grated (about 2 cups) 4 oz. cream cheese, cut into pieces 2 (12-ounce) cans evaporated milk 1 tsp. ground mustard salt, ground black pepper, chives Direc ons Step 1 S r together macaroni, half and half, bu er, cheddar, Monterey jack, cream cheese, evaporated milk, and mustard in the bowl of a 5 to 7 quart slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low, s rring every 30 minutes, un l macaroni is tender, 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Garnish w/ chives.

Crockpot Cookie

Ingredients 1/2 c. (1 s ck) bu er, so ened 1/2 c granulated sugar, 1/3 c brown sugar 1 large egg, 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, 1 tsp. baking soda Large pinch salt, 1 1/2 c. chocolate chips 1.Grease the bowl of your slow cooker with cooking spray. Using two 4” to 5” strips parchment paper, line the bowl in an “x” forma on. Using an electric mixer, beat bu er and sugars un l light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Slowly beat in egg and vanilla extract.

2. Add flour, baking soda, and salt and s r un l fully combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Pour cookie dough into slow cooker and smooth top with a spatula.

3.Cover and cook on high for 2 1/2 to 3 hours (or low for 5 to 6 hours), or un l the cookie is almost completely cooked through and only slightly so in the center.

Cookie can be kept warm in slow-cooker for up to 3 hours. Remove insert from slow cooker base and place on a cooling rack to cool. Use the parchment paper to remove the cookie, slice and serve.

Chicken Noodle Soup YIELDS: 4 - 6 serving(s) PREP TIME: 20 mins TOTAL TIME: 4 hrs 20 mins Ingredients 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 carrots, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 small onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 c. dry white wine 2 1/2 lb. bone-in, skinless chicken thighs 2 (32-ounce) containers chicken stock 2 1/2 c. uncooked wide egg noodles (4 oz) 3 tbsp. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 2 tbsp. chopped fresh dill 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice Direc ons Step 1 Op onal: Heat oil in a 5 to 7 quart slow cooker using the sauté func on or in a large pan over medium heat. Add carrots, celery, onion, and garlic and season with salt and pepper. Cook, s rring occasionally, un l so ened and star ng to brown, 8 to 10 min.

Add wine, cook un l reduced, 1 to 2 min.

Step 2 If necessary, transfer ingredients to slow cooker. Add chicken and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Cook un l vegetables are tender and chicken is cooked through, 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours on high or 7 to 9 hours on low.

Step 3 Transfer chicken to a cu ng board and shred with two forks. Discard bones; return meat to pot. S r in noodles. Cook un l noodles are just tender, 25 to 30 minutes on high and 50 to 60 minutes on low. S r in parsley, dill, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.

Hot Chocolate YIELDS: 6 - 8 serving(s) PREP TIME: 10 mins TOTAL TIME: 2 hrs 15 mins

Ingredients 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder 6 c. whole milk 2 c. heavy cream 2 (4-oz.) semisweet chocolate bars, chopped 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. instant espresso or coffee 15 jumbo marshmallows, plus more for garnish 8 oz. Irish cream liqueur (such as Bailey's), op onal Shaved chocolate, for garnish

Direc ons 1 Whisk together the sugar and cocoa powder in a 6-quart slow cooker. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to incorporate. Whisk in the heavy cream, chopped chocolate, vanilla extract, and instant espresso.

2 Cover and cook on low heat, whisking occasionally, un l the chocolate is melted and the mixture is hot and well combined, about 2 hours. Add the marshmallows and cook un l the marshmallows begin to melt into the hot chocolate, about 2 minutes.

S r in the Irish cream liqueur, if using.

3 Set the slow cooker to warm. Ladle the hot chocolate into serving mugs, and top with more marshmallows and shaved chocolate, if you like.

Simone now standing twenty-five or almost centre from the Model "A' touring to Becka, and almost dead centre to the ring of lumberjacks carrying rifles surrounding Simone, Bill and Nuis. Nuis had followed Simone as she moved forward, standing beside her. Bill stayed beside the car.

Becka snarled, "One of you mbermen shoot that dam wolf now."

One of the men in the circle raised his hun ng rifle taking aim directly at Nuis, as a large grin formed on his face remarked, "be my pleasure. What happens if I shoot the lady?'

Becka s ll thinking he was in charge replied, "Bonus points."

The shooter fidgeted a bit to get a be er aim, and without a conscience pulled the trigger. The heavy rifle instead of expelling the bullet and with a large bang, exploded in the firing chamber, blowing pieces of metal, gun powder and shell fragments backwards into the gun mans face.

As the balance of the armed men stood in silence, the gun man u ered no sound, simply fell backwards and lay frozen on the ground.

Simone looking at the men without emo ons on her face and in a quiet voice addressed them. "Your guns will not fire, except to explode. At that me you will join your fellow worker on his trip to the herea er. Your friend will be blessed later, with hope that he will move to heaven."

Simone, s ll addressing the group surrounding her, Bill and Nuis. "The gate that is now closed blocking the roadway, will now open and those who wish to leave may do so. Simply lay down your rifles and go."

At that direc on Becka, now almost hysterical shouted, "any man that leaves, I'll shoot."

Simone turning to Becka and in a loud angry voice, "you do not understand do you. You have no power now, you are simply a despicable li le creature and have been despised all your life by decent people. All men here will be forgiven. You Becka will not."

Becka ignoring Simone's words, screamed "keep the gate closed."

Simone transformed once again. The skirt now falling away from her waist, dropping to the ground revealed the extension of her leather top forming to the shape of her leg. Long shields formed from her ankles, fi ng the shape of her shins, to her knees, flaring out and above, then con nued the same pa ern to her hips. The body armour embellished in silver and gold flaring over and outlining the outer edges. On the thigh guards was a flag of the Templar Knights. The most striking appearance was the total ou it seemed to shimmer and flare making the ac on very unnerving.

Bill standing could not make a move as he was both fascinated and puzzled ques on in his mind, "What happened to Simone?"

Nuis now si ng in the "A" touring had that look that animals get and if Nuis could speak would say "go girl go."

Simone shouted at Becka, "the gate will open." Eerie silence flowed over the encampment, interrupted by a loud grinding and moaning noise of metal against metal, when suddenly the gate ripped from the anchors and was flung

far into the surrounding woods.

The men seeing the path was now clear took the opportunity to run and leave. As the group dropped the guns making their way out of the area and on the path towards the main road, the woods surrounding the path exploded in a fury of howling and growling. As the shrubs and cedars burst apart the faces of a hundred wolves rushed out.

Mul ple colours of red and blue, oranges and yellows trailing behind their heads, covering what was the necks and bodies.

The men retrea ng and turning rushed back towards the lumber camp. The only way to escape the terrifying pack of a hundred or more wolves, charging towards them, was past Simone and Becka into the woods.

The men and wolves now rushing past Bill and Simone, with terror in their eyes and gaunt expressions on their faces.

Simone walked closer to Becka and with a n ge r ex p re s s e d i n h e r d e m e a n e r addressed them.

"Their soles will be cleansed in the woods. Those that live are redeemed. Those that pass are on your level Becka."

Becka trying to move from his posi on on the office porch answered Simone, "If I could regain control you would understand the saying, A woman's place is in the home."

Simone, her face now relaxed and with the anger gone from her facial features in a laugh, the one that all women use to mock someone, then spoke, "you can move Becka, and raise your gun and the gun will fire. You dear Becka must decide. Will the gun fire and bullet expel at your target, or will you join your man lying on the ground."

Becka standing very s ll, sweat pouring off his forehead, looked at Simone remaining silent, his demeanor now changing.

Bill staring at Simone and in his mind thinking, "what in hell is she doing? Trying to get us killed." Then in deeper thought realized Simone had called Becka's bluff.

A silence now embraced the lumber camp, as all the par es stood completely s ll un l Becka in a high pitched voice asked Simone, "Is your punishment for me a large black bear to chase me into the woods to as you say redeem my soul?"

“No," Simone answered Becka. "Your soul can not be redeemed Becka. But I will

be kind to you despite your evil ways."

The silence once again returned. Then a sound very faint echoed in the distance on the path to the lumber camp, and as it became closer. Bill recognized it as the hoof beats of heavy horses, along with the creak and groan of leather harness. Beck stared at the pathway to the camp, when as the head of two very large horses came into view, as if they were moving out of a fog, slowly taking full shape. The team pulling a large carriage. The carriage was black in its colour, turned into blue, but most discerning was the ominous figure si ng at the front of the carriage. Not in a cloak and hood rather in a lang black leather coat with a full leather hat. The carriage moved at the rhythm pace, coming closer to the campsite. The carriage entered the camp and slowly moved past Bill and the Model "A" stopping in front of Becka.

Before Simone could move beside the carriage, Becka blurted out "Dad," he ques oned then turned to Simone and con nued, "Is this your punishment? You know that carriage was Bill's dad. You know that ou it was my father's. That he wore as your fathers-in-law driver. You know Simone a er Bill's dad passed and my father passed I burnt them to the ground and I said at that me my father was just a slave to your family."

The carriage stopped in from of Becka.

Simone standing at side of the carriage while Becka con nued his rant was quiet unaware the ravens had taken flight and formed a large mass behind him, in the shape of a large ominous figure wearing a cloak with eyes glowing red.

Simone ignored the large figure forming above the woods and moved to the carriage and as she reached the carriage the door opened.

Simone reaching upwards extended her arm and hand to assist the individual disembarking the carriage. Gree ng the individual saying "Hello Elinka."

Becka hearing the gree ng and in a loud voice responded, “Elinka!, That is my mother's name."

The figure now standing beside the carriage, looked at Simone, not replying just smiled, walked towards Becka speaking to him. "Hello Alkeb. It is me my son to come home."

Becka dropped his rifle, and fell to his knee's, crying out. "Mom, Mom, how can

you be here?"

"It ma ers not, how I am here son. I have come to take you home. Please come to the carriage." Becka's Mom requested, as she extended her hand in invita on.

Becka slowly made his way towards his mother, finally reaching her side. The look of terror on Becka's face told Simone that he knew his punishment was.

Becka turned to Simone pleading "Is there no other way, in all your power, can forgiveness not exist?"

Simone replied, "No! Your reign of terror has ended."

Becka struggled as his mother firmly gripped his hand pulling him towards the open carriage door. Becka deep inside knew resistance was impossible as a unseen force moved him towards he carriage, despite his resistance. Becka was soon in the carriage beside his mother.

Simone reached up and closed the carriage door. The door rather than shu ng with a gentle click, resounded like a gunshot echoing thru the woods.

Becka reacted to the noise with a grimace. Becka stared out the window at Simone and then turned to his mother with a pleading voice u ering only "Mom." Simone stepped back from the carriage acknowledging only Elinka. "Good bye Elinka, it was very nice mee ng you."

Elinka acknowledged Simone with a nod, at the same me tapping the roof of the carriage.

Becka's father, the driver of the carriage, flicked the reins commanding the team to go. The carriage made a large turn around the areas in front of the office and le the compound. The silence broke by the thunder of the ravens leaving as they followed the carriage.

The men who fled now quietly returning.

One of them asking Bill. "Sir what happens now?"

Bill remained quiet, as Simone responded, "fell no trees. Use the ones down, to turn into lumber. Remain at the camp. Also no hun ng."

Simone turned to Bill asking, "Is that alright dear?"

Bill nodded his head, "Yes." But in his mind he thought, "what choice do I have."

It’s Winter!

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a different type of murder mystery.

Let me introduce you to the four club members who reside at the Coopers Chase Retirement Village. Elizabeth was in the secret service, Ibrahim a former psychiatrist, Ron a trade union leader, and Joyce a nurse who has replaced Penny.

Penny has dementia and is now a resident of Coopers Chase. The Four members meet every Thursday in the Jigsaw Room and over a bottle of wine discuss unsolved cold cases.

Ian Ventham, owner of Coopers Close has announced a new development called Woodlands and the village is incensed as it means removal of graves from the Garden of Eternal Rest. The same day he fires his long time builder,Tony Curran, who is later found bludgeoned to death.

The Thursday Murder Club can't believe it as they have a real murder to solve. They enlist the aid of Police Constable Donna De Freitas who has been assigned to the case.

Next day, a construction truck arrives to remove the coffins. An angry crowd arrives and in the ensuing melee Ian Ventham keels over dead before he reaches his car from an overdose of fentanyl.

The Murder Club gets to work. Never underestimate their abilities. They lead us through many scenarios before solving the crimes.

This book is a delight from start to finish.

Look out the window. An ocean of white stretches as far as the eye can see, in all direc ons. And what makes up that 'ocean'?

Individual snowflakes. Millions of them, all in infinite shapes and sizes!

Since childhood, most of us have been fascinated by the 'white stuff'. Remember making paper snowflakes in school during the winter? I was always amazed at how each person created something different out of an iden cal sheet of folded paper, using just their crea vity and a pair of scissors. Each real snowflake is also wondrously unique.

Snowflakes are actually not frozen rain drops as some believe, but rather ice crystals that form an ordered crystalline structure. They form inside low-lying clouds, in temperatures that hover around 0 degrees or just below. As they develop, ice crystals need something to a ach to so they can grow, o en glomming onto par cles of dust, pollen, or even minute par cles of soot in the atmosphere. When they are fully formed and heavy enough, they begin their lazy descent to the ground.

Although there are several types of snowflakes, the one we are most familiar with is called a dendrite. Dendrites have six branches and are pre y much symmetrical in shape, the shape that is mimicked when we make paper snowflakes. But why do they always have six sides? They begin their lives as ice crystals. Ice crystal molecules have six sides and are formed from two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, H20, water! – three atoms = six sides. Since snowflakes begin as ice crystals inside a cloud, a hexagonal shape forms as they develop. Temperatures are o en constant within the cloud, allowing water molecules to a ach evenly to the ice crystal across all six branches of the flake. The final hexagonal shape and design of each flake is determined by the temperature and humidity the snowflake has been subjected

to while traversing the atmosphere.

The granular white stuff – the snowflakes that are easier to shovel – occur when temperatures are colder and there is less moisture available. As it is light, this type of snowflake doesn't compact readily, leaving a fair amount of lo between snowflakes as they land on the ground. The air temperature and moisture content determine the weight of the snowflake and the resul ng snow. As temperatures rise and hover around freezing, snowflakes contain more moisture, and the snow becomes denser, compac ng more easily. Interes ngly, heavy snow can weigh between 10 to 20 pounds per cubic foot – enough to cave in a roof if there is a large accumula on during successive winter storms! Not everyone loves this type of snow, as we slip and slide our way around, but on the posi ve side, it is great for snowball fights or construc ng your very own 'Frosty the Snowman'! It keeps the kids busy. And there's always skiing!

Since we may be facing an El Nino winter this y e a r, w i t h w a r m e r - t h a n - n o r m a temperatures predicted, the type of weather we experience may produce less of the fluffy white stuff and more heavy icy accumula on.

The weather won't necessarily be 'balmy', but could be very inclement at mes with ice storms being a dis nct possibility. We al remember the winter of 1998 in our area.

1998 was also an El Nino year.

So, the next me unique, crystalline snowflakes float down, try to embrace it. You don't have to go outside. Enjoy it from your window on the world. A er all, it is winter, and this fluffy white blanket of snow enfolds our slumbering earth while she awaits the coming spring.

A Cold Season

The weather is nasty its cold outside So we will all spend more time inside We will turn up the heat to take off the chill And our stomach with food we will fill The highways are snowy and slippery once again If we fall a broken bone will cause us some pain The gardens are finished for another year If we look at them we shed no tears Folks will be out on snowmobiles just cruising around While others on snowshoes or skating will be found The good weather will be back in a little while So I hope your face always has a big smile Some days we may feel tough and a little sick But the good weather will make you better real quick Christmas is gone were starting a new year Will it be a good one or stormy I do fear We are eating food that was put away last fall And with the spring we’ll say we ate it all There will be storms and the wind will blow Yes the power may go out this we all now We’re told if you don’t have to travel then stay at home Where you’ll be safe even if you are all alone As the weather warms up we’ll think about seeds So they can be planted and we’ll have food to supply our needs Some may wish for Florida and then go on down When there they’ll be happy without any frown Yes there in Florida or some other warm place They should always have a big smile on their face But most others will stay here and shovel snow Because for any place else we just can’t go Winston E. She studied community theatre and storytelling in England and began leading workshops, storytelling and coordina ng fes vals before coming to Canada twenty years ago. Hermione is a member of Storytellers of Canada and involved with a local group of tellers in Peterborough. Drop into the library on this Friday and join in on the fun. Hermione’s visit is sponsored by ABC Seniors through a grant from the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility.

Ukulele Group The Ukulele Strumming Group is back in full swing this month a er a stellar turnout in December.

It’s also a great way to meet people, have some fun with ukuleles. There is even some singing happening. If you don’t have an instrument, the library has a few to spare so mark your calendar and drop in.

Participate in the local Petroglyphs Christmas Bird Count, January 2nd, 2024

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in Canada is an annual bird survey conducted by volunteer birdwatchers. It is part of a larger interna onal effort coordinated by the Na onal Audubon Society in the United States.

Each CBC takes place on a single calendar day during a designated period around Christmas and New Year's between the dates of December 14 and January 5. During the count, volunteers count all the birds they see and hear within a designated count circle.

This year the Petroglyphs Bird Count will be on Tuesday, January 2nd.

Many people will be out scou ng the woods, fields and any open water they can find for birds and coun ng what they find. The count also encourages people with bird feeders to par cipate. If you are feeding birds within the area iden fied on the map perhaps you would like to par cipate in the count? Coun ng species and numbers of birds at a feeder for the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) requires some careful observa on and recording. Here's a suggested approach: Choose a designated me(s) during the count day to count the birds coming to your feeder (for example, 8-10 a.m.). Mul ple mes are also encouraged (e.g. and hour or more in the morning as well as in the a ernoon).

Sta onary Count: Sta on yourself near the feeder or observa on point without moving around. This will help avoid double-coun ng birds.

Record All Species: Write down every bird species you see. Field guides or bird iden fica on apps can be useful.

Count Individuals: Keep track of the maximum number of individuals of each species present at any one me. This avoids coun ng the same bird mul ple mes.

Use Binoculars: Binoculars can help you iden fy and count birds more accurately, especially if they are farther away. Both adult and children’s binoculars may be borrowed from the Apsley Branch of the North Kawartha Library.

Record Time Spent: Keep track of the me you spend observing. This informa on is necessary for the person summarizing the bird count data.

Submit Your Data: A er your count, submit your observa ons to Colin Jones who coordinates the Petroglyphs count at cdjonesmclark@gmail.com.

Your careful observa ons will help scien sts understand changes in bird popula ons and distribu on over me. The CBC is one of the world's longest-running wildlife monitoring programs, providing crucial informa on for bird conserva on efforts. Even if you don't par cipate in the count, you can make a contribu on to bird conserva on by keeping your feeders filled throughout the winter.

REMEMBERING JACK LOWN Dec 14th 1946 Dec 12th 2023

John "Jack" Hayward Lown passed away December 12 at his home in Apsley where he had been recovering from surgery. He had been visi ng Apsley since 1970, and in 2013 moved here permanently. He and his wife, Helen, very much enjoyed all Apsley had to offer - coffee shops, get-togethers of all kinds, and looking a er their property. Jack very much wanted to give back to Apsley, and since he was an ar st, his way was to draw cartoons for the Apsley Backroads. In addi on to being an ar st, Jack was also a musician, and very much enjoyed all crea ve pursuits. He had also been an actor at the "Curtain Club" in Richmond Hill, and in a number of CBC television produc ons. All of us loved that he was very intelligent, and as per his brother, had a "giant brain"! Jack was very family-oriented and close to all of us, including the next genera on his nephews, nieces, and great-nephew. He was a mild-mannered, gentle man, and was taken too soon. He is greatly missed by his family and friends. A Celebra on of Life may be held at a later date.

From Helena Back when I took over the Backroads Magazine in June 2022, Jack Lown was so kind and eager to make sure his much loved cartoons would con nue with the ownership change and I assured him they were a favourite and readers look forward to them every month, so keep ‘em coming!

I personally loved these cartoons, because they reminded me of our Grandfather Don’s circle of friends that used to get together faithfully each morning for breakfast - there was a cartoonist in the group named Ted Clark that had a similar style. So, for many years I loved reading the cards, cartoons and artwork Ted would create, lovingly poking fun at his friend’s personality quirks.

Less and less people are making the me these days to get together and talk face to face, laughing, being crea ve and sharing stories.

Thank you Jack, for sharing your gi s with our community and for reminding us to slow down, laugh and nurture our friendships.

Surviving January

January always seemed to be the longest month of the year. Thinking back over the years I remember that my mother used those dark days to make quilts, knit, sew clothing. As children we would huddle around the wood fuelled Quebec heater in the dining room playing card games or crokinole. If I ventured outside it would be to put on my skis and take off to explore the countryside.

Today, I retreat to my warm basement - to my craft centre. The windows are small and high on the wall. I can ignore the snow!

What can I create at my work bench?

Choices! Choices! Painting supplies along with canvases sit on a shelf. I spot my carving tools. No way am I going to wade through the snow to the building where my wood is located. Maybe I will just go back to making more steampunk jewelry. I can donate my pieces to the museum or the thrift shop where they are pleased to raise funds.

A friend has just given me a whole box full of pocket watch and wristwatch parts.

They make really good bases for the necklaces. Actually a necklace can be made of an assembly of various materials such as keys, coins, charms, parts of old jewelry. Look in your jewelry box. Why are you saving that one earring? You know you will never find the mate. What about that tiny wristwatch? It no longer works but it belonged to your grandmother and carries memories of her.

These pieces could be incorporated into wearable jewelery such as a pin or a necklace.

Many artisans join pieces together with solder. A torch in my hand is a scary idea so I use a glue such as Goop.So far that works well. While I buy chain at a craft store old chains work well. First thing you know January has slipped by. Winter is slipping by as well.

Christmas is Over With the presents all opened and Christmas all done, I remembered past Christmas mes joyful and fun.

Coming home from a party, I spied a box under our tree, Forgo en and unopened but addressed just to me.

When I opened the box there was nothing inside.

A slight disappointment was not hard to hide.

Then I thought there are families with nothing to give, Some running from war just trying to live.

In my empty box, I then saw a world full of joy, Food, shelter and clothing for each girl and boy.

A world where rivers run crystal clear, So the fish can mul ply year a er year.

A world where differences are not fought in a war A world where the giving comes from the heart not a store.

So my empty box is back under the tree.

I addressed it this me to our Global Family.

I’ll leave it tucked in the corner and pray, That in my life me, our world will be peaceful one day.

VIEW FROM THE CABIN

THE JOURNAL ` In order to provide you, the reader, with a better understanding of this story, I'll give you a brief overview of the background story that was published in the February 2023 issue of Apsley Backroads entitled "THE VISITOR".

Thaddeus O'Toole was an old man who was known by few. He lived alone in the wilds of Northern Ontario in a log cabin that he'd built for himself as a younger man. His only companion was a wolf.

Last winter, during a blinding snowstorm, a young native named Isaiah Crow stumbled across the old man's cabin and was graciously offered shelter for the night. About five months later Isaiah came to pay the old man a visit, but instead found an obituary lying on the table along with a note from a caring neighbour. Isaiah subsequently adopted the wolf, and along with Thaddeus' Bible, was given an old journal.

In this well-worn volume of stories and recollections, Isaiah found scribbled writings on scraps of paper that were pasted onto its pages between the neatly written paragraphs. Each scrap (as shown in italics below) was a memento of a particular thought or observation hastily written so the old man would remember them, and cleverly included in each journal entry.

Reading through the fascinating stories of adventure and survival, Isaiah found the following entry that reminded him of the memorable stormy night he'd spent with the old man. ******* January 10th, 1977: I'd been on the trail for a few hours. The air was crisp and the weather pleasant. The sun slanted through the naked trees casting bluish shadows on the snow. A slight breeze came up, and I noticed the horizon was becoming grey with clouds.

Tracks were everywhere. Snowshoe hares with their huge snowshoe-like feet were feeding more than usual, leaving a myriad of stories in the snow.

Whitetail deer had been actively browsing on low hanging cedar boughs, sometimes standing on hind legs to get the higher, more succulent greens. Their tracks were easy to read.

The cloud bank advanced quickly. The breeze became stronger, colder. I put my collar up and my hat down over my ears.

The signs were all around me now.

A west wind advances over the hills and rushes with icy vigour into the winter woods. Drifting white wraiths creep along the snowy landscape like many clawing fingers, but grasp at nothing. They speak in hushed tones — whispers of things to come. High branches rattle and complain, moaning in the rising wind. The rabbit tracks I'd been seeing crisscrossing the trail are disappearing quickly. It all looks so devoid of life now. A storm is coming!

Leaning against a small tree that rocked back and forth in the windy gusts, I scrawled the words above on a small piece of paper with the stub of a pencil. My fingers were stiff with cold. I looked around as I struggled to pull my mittens back on. The woods seemed more barren and lifeless than earlier. It was time to head back to the cabin and stoke the fire before the snowstorm began in earnest.

The first flakes of snow descended from darkening skies just as I approached the clearing. I banged off my boots and went inside to warm up. The coals were barely glowing in the stove and the cabin was noticeably colder than when I'd left. I placed some dry maple wood on the embers and closed the stove door. The kettle would whistle when the water started to boil. I really looked forward to a nice hot cup of coffee to warm my insides. After a minute or so the maple burst into flame. I love watching it do that.

There is an indescribable feeling of excitement mixed with contentment when you weather a storm in the warm safety of a stout cabin.

As I warmed up and waited for the water to boil, I stared contemplatively at the licking flames. My feet were propped up near the glass of the stove, toes wiggling inside two layers of socks. I was finally beginning to feel them again.

The great spruces surrounding the cabin are groaning in complaint as enormous blasts of cold northwest air roar through their branches. Their trunks bend as if a giant unseen beast is leaning against them.

Looking out the snow-strafed window I prayed the beautiful old trees would be able to stand the strain. The buffeting wind and snow enveloped the cabin. It was getting darker with every passing moment.

A piercing whistle suddenly rose above the moaning of the storm, disrupting my deep thoughts. I lit a lamp and poured the steaming water through the filter basket. The aroma of freshly dripped coffee always smelled better at times like this. A mug of java and a big butter tart in front of the cozy fire would keep my mind off the carnage outside for a little while.

It is fully dark now. The blizzard has not let up, but my majestic spruces have so far stood the test, for I have not heard a telltale crash or felt the cabin shudder with their sudden demise.

After a supper of canned beans, fried eggs and toast, I relaxed by the fire and read a book. The storm raged on. I didn't worry about

Jingle & Mingle a Success!

December 14th, 2023 (North Kawartha) Community Care Jingled and Mingled and Raised over $5,000 On Saturday December 2nd , Community Care hosted their 3rd Annual Jingle & Mingle fundraising event at the North Kawartha Community Centre and raised over $5,000 to help support programs in Apsley and throughout the Municipality of North Kawartha.

“The evening was magical, and everyone enjoyed the fes ve dinner catered by The Grape and Wedge,” said Ka e Bryck – Community Care’s Community Development Coordinator in Apsley. “Sofia with Newtown Photography donated her me and talent to capture our event.” Images can be downloaded from Community Care’s local Facebook account h ps://www.facebook.com/CommCareinApsley.

“This event would not have been a success without our dedicated group of fundraising volunteers, who helped to promote our event, sell ckets, and decorate. Thank you to all of our volunteers, who con nue to help support us and the local community,” added Bryck.

Community Care is a not for profit organiza on that operates several community health support programs like Meals on Wheels, transporta on to medical appointments, free exercise programs for seniors. LIONS COMMUNITY REPORT

Welcome all to 2024! We hope all were able to share some quality time with family and/or friends over the holiday season.

The Apsley Lions Winter Carnival is soon upon us. Make plans to come to NKCC on Saturday, January 27 for a variety of activities including face painting, discovering balloon creations, observing and touching a variety of exotic animals as well as a host of games for the young ones. This fun event runs from 10 am to 2 pm in the Community Hall.

The Lions food trailer will be on site with a range of food items including our famous fries. Minor hockey will be running a tournament that day as well.

Come out and cheer on the kids.

The Lions Carnival is a no cost event and another effort by your community Lions Club to say thanks for all the support we are blessed to receive.

The Santa Claus parade and Children’s Christmas Party were a great success on Saturday, November 25. Thank you to the many who came out to be part of and to cheer on the parade. As always, the highlight was seeing Santa in his sleigh and then on the stage in the Community Hall.

Smiling faces were everywhere and special pictures with Santa made for new memories for the little ones. The Lions Club were able to distribute gifts to approximately 115 children. This event is one which is very special for our Club and the community. It does bring us all together to celebrate the fun that is Christmas.

Lions President Ted Topping visited Apsley Central PS in late November to present a cheque for $750 to Principal Jeff White and Secretary Chandos Hickey to support the hamper programme organized at the school to assist families in our community at Christmas time.

There will be a brief lull in Lions activities following the winter carnival but there will be lots of planning going on behind the scenes in preparation for the return of euchre nights, the Annual Giant Flea Market, Canada Day and many other events. Future editions of Backroads will contain details as they become available.

The Snow Dragon, Part III

By Grace It’s said that People are saved But this also lets Some people see It’s Grace that lets folks Have visions of realms Of magic and mystery Thus, artists, writers And poets exist As architects of dreams They know that The everyday world Isn’t always as it seems Hence, those who Only accept truth From a scientis’s lips Believe the following About a lunar eclipse: That the Earth Casts a shadow On the smaller Circling sphere And, at other notions They’ll likely scoff or jeer But weary disbelievers Might one day “whistle A different tune” (If, by tedious banality They’re not driven To complete ruin) When they discover that

A lunar eclipse is really The Snow Dragon’s shadow Cast on the moon And the showers Of shooting stars That pierce the Winter night skies Are really sparkles falling From the Snow Dragon’s eyes When it turns its gaze To the mortals, below And the land it has covered With crystals of snow During the winter solstice on December 21st, 2010, a complete lunar eclipse of a full moon occurred. This very rare event was the first one to take place in 372 years.

Thanks to the generosity of North Kawartha we were able to raise $1220.00 this year from our poppy boxes. This November we were also able to collect 8 shopping bags of non-perishable food for our foodbank! In conjunc on with our food dona on we are proud to say we have been able to donate $180.00 as well. This is half the profits from table rentals received for the cra sale that also took place at our legion in November. Thanks to all our vendors and everyone who came out to shop, it was great fun and we cannot wait to do it all again next year!

We had the best me seeing all of you out at the Santa Claus parade, special thanks to all our volunteers who made our float a success. One detail you may have missed was that every Canadian flag in our float had the birth and death dates of our local veterans, just another way for our legion to con nue to honour their sacrifices during this holiday season. Our sergeant-atarms Andy Whyte is looking for other like minded individuals that want to represent our legion by marching in parades. You would need a legion uniform. If you are interested you can leave a message for Andy at the bar and he will reach out with more informa on.

It is with great sadness we inform you that on Thursday December 7, 2023, Ted Ingram passed away at Belleville General Hospital, with his family close by. He was in his 83rd year. Ted had been a dedicated teacher and coach at Lakefield College School for 25 years. His reputa on for caring for students' success and wellbeing was only rivalled by his reputa on for making bad puns! He was a tenor for the Peterborough Singers for 30 years and was a long- me member of the Kawartha Krocs Rugby Team.

Ted was always ready to help a neighbour and volunteered in the community up un l this summer. His family was a source of strength and comfort. Beloved husband of Daphne Ingram (nee Renwick) for over 58 years. Loving father of Nicola and Toni (Chris). Dear grandfather of Torin, Kayli and Brianna. He is survived by his brother Charles and predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Louisa, and his sister, Leonie. Crema on has taken place. A funeral service will be held at the A.W.
