A Little Bit of History - TRACTORS IN NEW ZEALAND It was 1892 when the first forwards-backwards tractor crunched over an Iowa cornfield. Just a few years later, early tractors hit NZ. By the 1970s tractor numbers peaked at nearly 100,000.

Here’s how it all got going.

The first tractors came to New Zealand…

In 1904. Many say it was Robert McNab of Gore who imported the first. It was a three-wheeled Ivel. By 1919 there were 100 tractors on Kiwi farms. In the 20s, tin mill stationary threshing machines were attached to some of the lighter manoeuvrable machines. These old things used ‘tractor fuel,’ kerosene or petroleum. By 1931, over 5000 tractors – especially crawlers – were clearing scrub and water races.

As farm sizes increased so did tractor sizes and the 2050hp tractors became unsuitable for larger scale farming.

From farm style to lifestyle, to life at the beach

After the number of farmers dropped, we saw the rise of the 10 acre lifestyle block and 20-50hp tractors came into their own again. Today’s lifestyle block owners expect a light machine which can carry pallets and bales, break up soil and ram a fence post.

Owners of trailer boats also really cottoned on to using these size machines for launching boats of all sizes.

Making farming fast

Farmers who had been doing it the hard way found early tractors difficult to start. After all, who needs a machine with horsepower when horses would do instead! Apparently, the engine oil of early tractors needed warming before cranking and some farmers even resorted to lighting a fire or using a blowtorch to warm the engine!

Fast models with rubber tyres became available in the late 1930s and horses began to disappear. The hydraulic three-point connection became standard after 1948.

Baler attachments appeared around 1950. Bale wrappers followed in the 80s, and bale feeders were an advent of the early 2000s.

We’ve come a long way in just 100 years. Next time your AC isn’t working in the cab on a hot day, be thankful your tractor even has a cab – the first models certainly didn’t!
