The etc&tal magazine interviewed the Deputy Consul General of Brazil in Toronto, Ademar Seabra da Cruz Junior, whom, among other tasks, he also promotes trade relations between the two countries. The newcomer to Toronto, Ademar, talked about the adaptation to the new city, the challenges of his functions and the acceptance of Brazilian products by the Canadian market. Check out the interview: Etc&tal: When did you arrive in Toronto and what do you think of the new house? ADEMAR: I arrived in August of last year (2016), invited by the Consul General, Ana LĂŠlia BenincĂĄ Beltrame, and within a few weeks I was already adapted. It was a very pleasant surprise and, indeed, Canada is a country of easy adaptation. Etc&tal: What are your duties at the Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto? ADEMAR: I manage the commercial sector and work with the business portfolio between Brazilian and Canadian companies, but my functions also cover the services, science, technology and innovation, investment and commercial promotion part. My main focus here is to make life easier for the Brazilian investor in Canada by providing information and data that help in this business relationship. Etc&tal: What are the biggest difficulties faced by Brazilian exporters in entering the Canadian market? ADEMAR: We have a very good competitiveness, especially in what we are stronger and are world leaders in, like agricultural products. What is lacking is adding value to this product and innovation in the export culture. The fact is that as we have a very large and strong internal market, we are more than 200 million, the entrepreneur does not have much culture to take risks, to launch more in the international market. The crisis moment is actually an opportunity to review this culture and learn to be more competitive and adapt to the demands of the external market. Etc&tal: How is the Brazil - Canada trade balance? ADEMAR: It has, sadly, fallen back in the last four-five years due to the recession in Brazil. But what we are doing to reverse this situation is to bet on events and information, to spread knowledge about our product. We are working so that both sides can be expanded, that both Brazilian products enter here with more force, but also that Canadian companies can invest more in Brazil. The potential exists and can be strengthened. The SIAL is an example of these events, and previous data from the May edition show an excellent result in closed business numbers. The pavilion of Brazil achieved great success.
