A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to our Portuguese community as you celebrate Portuguese History and Heritage Month. The month of June is a time of great celebration for Portuguese Canadians as they gather for parades, cultural performances and other celebrations honouring the many achievements of its heroes and explorers. Among Portugal’s many legacies to the world is exploration. Portugal, with its navigational expertise, played a pioneering role in the discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries that ushered us into the age of exploration and discovery. Gaspar Corte Real, a Portuguese explorer, was one of the earliest discoverers of Canada. His work marked the beginnings of Canada as a multicultural nation. Generations of people from different regions of Portugal have been coming to Canada, and, through hard work and talent, they have found opportunities and success. The Portuguese Canadian community is a vibrant community in Ontario and continues to make many significant contributions to our society and to enrich it with its history, language, culture and work ethic. This year’s celebration has special significance because it is also the 150th Anniversary of our confederation. Celebrating this milestone means taking pride in our diverse, inclusive and innovative communities and uniting around our shared vision for the future. We have accomplished so much together, and I expect we will achieve even greater things in the next 150 years. Please accept my best wishes for a joyful celebration of Portuguese History and Heritage Month.
