SOUTHEAST HORN WORKSHOP Dr. Dakota Corbliss is currently the Assistant Professor of Horn and Graduate Director of Music Performance at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Corbliss has previously served as an instructor of horn at the University of South Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, and Coastal Carolina University.

As an ensemble performer, Corbliss is Fourth Horn in the Western Piedmont Symphony, he plays with many other regional orchestras such as North Carolina Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Roanoke Symphony, and Virginia Symphony. In the past, he has performed with the likes of New World Symphony, Miami City Ballet, South Florida Philharmonic, the United States Navy Band Southwest, the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, and many others.

He is an avid chamber musician, bridging gaps and styles of music across different instrumentations. His ventures include Vice City Brass, PIVOT, NewStream Brass, and Doctor's Orders, all of which have albums streaming on all major platforms.

Dr. Corbliss has an extensive background in pedagogical instruction, working with a wide variety of private students, chamber groups, and large ensembles. Presenting masterclasses at regional high schools and universities is a regular occurrence, as well as his involvement in the marching arts. Currently a member of the brass staff of Drum Corps International’s Phantom Regiment, he enjoys his time as a technician and adjudicator in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country.

In an administrative role, Corbliss is currently the Director of Operations for the Brass Institutes of America, a series of brass chamber music festivals that take place in the summer across the country. He has also worked logistics on many projects including the Savvy Arts Venture Challenge and the College Music Society Summit.

Corbliss has earned a DMA from the University of South Carolina School of Music, an MM from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, and a BA from Virginia Tech. His teachers have included JD Shaw and Wallace Easter.

The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University is nestled at the base of Howard's Knob in downtown Boone, NC (year-round pop. 15,000), a small town which thrives as one of the Southeast's premier tourism and outdoor recreation destinations. The nearby Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest provide a beautiful natural setting with unlimited possibilities for outdoor adventure.

Named for Mariam Cannon Hayes, the Hayes School of Music enrolls more than 475 students pursuing careers in the following fields: Music Education, Music Performance, Music Therapy, Sacred Music, Composition and Theory, Music Industry Studies, Jazz Studies, Graduate Music Studies. You can find students in the ASU Horn Studio performing frequently throughout the calendar year with our large ensembles, brass choir, horn choir, Collegium Ensemble, Steely Pan Band, and many more. Featured Artist Barbara Jöstlein Currie Barbara Jöstlein Currie joined the Met Orchestra in 1998, as Assistant Horn. A year later, she won the Fourth Horn position, which she has held since 1999. Growing up in Chicago and studying with former CSO musicians Phil Farkas and Nancy Fako, she left for New York to study with former Met Principal Horn Julie Landsman at the Juilliard School on a full scholarship. When she was a sophomore, she was the runner-up in the Third Horn audition with the San Diego Symphony which led to the opportunity to spend a year with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra as their Associate and Third Horn.

Barbara has performed frequently at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and with the San Diego Symphony during the summer season, as well as one complete season as Second Horn with the San Diego Symphony.

Barbara is a longtime Professor of Horn at the Bard College Conservatory and has been on faculty at the Manhattan School of Music pre-college division and Mannes Prep division and has taught at Juilliard’s pre-college division.

She has has given master classes at many universities such as the Colburn School, Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory, University of North Carolina, University of Illinois as well as in Japan and Europe as well as for many international festivals such as Youth Orchestra of the Americas, Lessonface and for Marcus Bonna’s Lyra Bragança during the pandemic.

She was a featured artist at the International Horn Symposium in Kingsville, Texas, where she shared a program with Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Horn Jennifer Montone and Utah Symphony associate hornist Julia Pilant, and performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra horn section in recital at IHS Montreal.

Barbara has performed on the Barbie Movie and on Billie Eilish’s Grammy award winning song “What was I Made For?” and is active in the recording industry, playing both horn and Wagner tuba in movies such as Spike Lee’s High and Low, Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling, the Coen brothers movies True Grit and O Brother Where Art Thou?, Contagion starring Matt Damon, and with musicians such as Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga and Sting, recording in both NYC and Los Angeles.

Barbara has received two patents: one for her new magnetic pencil holder, Brass Witch, and another patent for her newest product, Styl Witch, a magnetic pencil and stylus combo manufactured in Nuremberg, Germany.

Featured Artist Laura Brenes Laura Brenes lives a life full of music. She studied with the legendary Vince DeRosa while obtaining her master’s degree at the University of Southern California. While still in school, she began performing with local orchestras and various ensembles. She has been able to perform in numerous diverse musical situations. Some highlights include being a part of the orchestra for the Academy Awards, touring the world with groups including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and performing concerts with Danny Elfman at the Coachella music festival. Laura also loves to play in the pit for touring Broadway shows that stop in Los Angeles. Over the past 25 years, the majority of her work has been in the recording studio where she has been able to perform with such legends as John Williams, Kamasi Washington, Alexandre Desplat, Blake Neely, Hans Zimmer, John Debney, and many more. She can be heard on hundreds of soundtracks for movies, television, video games and theme parks as well as record albums with artists such as Lada Gaga, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, and Neil Young. Laura has been solo principal horn for many projects including John Williams’ series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022). She released a solo album in 2015 entitled a Time and a Place which can be found on all platforms.

Featured Artist CORolina

Founded in the fall of 2024, CORolina is a quartet comprised of four horn professors across North Carolina. Travis Bennett (Western Carolina University), Dakota Corbliss (Appalachian State University), Abigail Pack (University of North Carolina-Greensboro), and Maria Serkin (University of North Carolina School of the Arts) enjoy performing all varieties of the repertoire, including new imaginations of familiar tunes, as well as the “staples”. The group enjoys performing and teaching across the region to aspiring chamber musicians.

Collaborative Pianist Catherine Garner Dr. Catherine Garner, an assistant professor in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, is a distinguished collaborative pianist and Director of Collaborative Piano. As an educator, Dr. Garner has held faculty positions at East Carolina University and currently coordinates the keyboard faculty at Appalachian State University. She is dedicated to fostering her students' growth and development, creating a dynamic learning environment through her expertise in collaborative piano.

Dr. Garner's career highlights include solo performances with prestigious orchestras and ensembles such as the Louisiana State University Orchestra and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. She has served as a staff pianist at international summer programs and participated in renowned music festivals across the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Garner currently serves as a member of the artistic board for the Center for Collaborative Piano, a summer music festival committed to furthering the education of collaborative pianists with chamber music by underrepresented composers. She has three published recordings: Monuments, 21st Century American Flute Sonatas, and Saloons, Salons, and Salutations.

Dr. Garner holds a Doctorate in Collaborative Arts and Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music, a Master's in Vocal Accompanying and Coaching from Florida State University, and a Bachelor's in Piano Performance from Louisiana State University.

Collaborative Pianist Mi-Jin Kim Dr. Mi-Jin Kim is a staff pianist in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Dr. Kim has held full-time faculty positions at Oklahoma State University, Arkansas Tech University, and Arkansas State University. Dr. Kim joined Appalachian State University in the Fall of 2023.

Dr. Kim started taking piano lessons at age of six, in her native Incheon, Republic of Korea. Her significant talent received recognition and awards from numerous competitions such as the Joong-Ahng Music Newspaper Competition and the Incheon City Piano Competition in Korea, the International Piano Workshop Competition in Bulgaria, the International Bicentennial Liszt Competition in Los Angeles, among others. She has appeared as soloist with the Sejong University Symphony Orchestra and Good Classic Music Festival Orchestra in Korea, and with the Philharmonica Bulgarica in Bulgaria. In 2015, she was also invited to perform at the 2015 American Liszt Society Festival "Liszt and Damnation," held at the University of North Texas.

During the past decade, Dr. Kim has served as a collaborative pianist and coach at numerous concerts and festivals, including Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca and Centro Studi Carlo della Giacoma Master Class for Clarinet and Piano in Italy, Tarrant County College, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas at Arlington, and University of North Texas, Denton campus. Her collaborative performances have also been live-broadcasted by the WRR 101.1 "Classic Cafe" at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Dr. Kim has also had the opportunity to perform and coach during the summers of 2021 and 2022 at Opera in the Ozarks at Inspiration Point.

Dr. Kim holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas and earned a double master’s degree in piano performance and collaborative piano from Michigan State University.

Contributing Artists Vivian Chang

Dr. Vivian Yu-hsuan Chang is the Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Horn at Coastal Carolina University. Balancing her teaching commitments, she remains an active performer with the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra and frequently appears in solo and chamber music settings. Her scholarly work centers on music theory, pedagogy, and music cognition. Dr. Chang advocates for new music and diverse repertoire through international collaborations, including a commission project inspired by Taiwanese indigenous music traditions.

Caleb DeLong

Caleb is an experienced horn player with a passion for dynamic, collaborative performance. He serves as Co-Principal Horn in the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra and Principal Horn in the UT Opera Orchestra. His large ensemble work also includes the UT Wind Ensemble. In addition to classical performance, Caleb expands his artistry through recording with Milk Man and the Big Band. Caleb’s current project explores the vital role of chamber music in undergraduate horn studies, highlighting its impact on musical growth and collaboration.

Passionate about inspiring the next generation, he seeks to engage young audiences by performing and presenting accessible chamber music experiences in the community. His work reflects a dedication to fostering a lifelong love of classical music.

Anne Eberwine

Anna Eberwine is a classical French horn artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a versatile musician who has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles. Her passion for music began at a young age and has led her to pursue a career as a freelancer. She has received a Masters of Music from Indiana University- Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State University. She is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at the University of Cincinnati- College-Conservatory of Music. Mrs. Eberwine has studied with many renown horn players including: Dr. Margaret Tung, Molly Norcross, Richard Seraphinoff, Bruce Henniss, Dale Clevenger, Andrew Bain, and Thomas Jöstlein.

Hailed by the Palm Beach Arts Paper for "standout horn playing," Albert Houde, Principal Horn of the West Virginia Symphony and Assistant Professor of Horn at West Virginia University, performs across the United States as an orchestral musician, chamber collaborator, and soloist. Recently, he traveled to Brazil to premiere Finding Balance, a trio for horn, viola, and piano by Matthew Heap that was commissioned by Houde and his wife, violist Andrea Houde.

Edward House

Edward House is a dynamic horn player and teacher committed to sharing his love of the horn.

He is at home with many styles of music having played in chamber, symphonic, studio, and musical theater settings. He is currently an active performer and teacher in the Los Angeles area.

Recent engagements include the Schumann Konzertstück with the Stony Brook University Symphony, Gounod’s Petite Symphonie as part of the Staller Center’s Starry Nights series, and Principal Horn for Stony Brook Opera’s production of Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, as well as numerous appearances as a freelance player in New York City.

David Lewis

David Lewis is a fully licensed mental health Clinician who also freelances throughout North Carolina. Whether playing in a pit, opera, chamber Ensemble or Orchestra, David follows his love of music.

Benjamin Lieser

Benjamin Lieser is the horn professor at the University of Central Florida. Prior to joining the UCF School of Performing Arts Faculty in 2017, Dr. Lieser taught horn at Stetson University and music at both the middle and high school levels in Florida. He has performed and presented at the International Horn Symposium, the Southeast Horn Workshop, the International Double Reed Workshop, the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Conference, and is currently the host of the Florida French Horn Festival. Dr. Lieser holds the position of Principal Horn with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra (Melbourne, FL) and Second Horn with the Bach Festival Society Orchestra (Orlando, FL). In addition, he often performes with the Orlando Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra, and for Walt Disney World Entertainment.

Contributing Artists Abigail Pack

Abigail Pack (Professor of Horn) and Mark Engebretson (Professor of Composition and Technology) are colleagues at UNC Greensboro and Toxic Sun is a product of a collaboration through support of a UNCG Summer Research Grant. Engebretson’s creative work is driven by melody, timbre, virtuosity, clear and balanced formal structure, the integration of new media, multiple levels of associations, and a desire for fresh, engaging musical expression.

Robert Palmer

Robert Palmer is the Director of Athletic Bands at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He directs the marching, pep, and concert bands as well as teaching high brass lessons and additional music courses in the department of music. Palmer has a doctorate from Florida State University under the tutelage of Michelle Stebleton, and has been a contributing artist on state, regional, and international festivals.

David Overall

David, a freelance hornist in Knoxville, TN studied at the University of Tennessee under Calvin Smith with additional instruction from James Thatcher and Joseph Meyer. He performed as 4th horn for several years with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, he joined the Knoxville Amadeus Concert Ensemble as 4th horn. Classical performance aside, he also entertains as frontman and mellophonium/s in his long-standing blues band, Leftfoot Dave and the Magic Hats, active since 2009.

William Schafer

Dr. Schaffer has led the horn studio at Auburn University for 25 years. While there he taught all levels of music theory as well as numerous other classes. He remains active as a solo performer, as well as maintaining positions in several orchestras, including as principal horn in Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL).performes with the Orlando Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra, and for Walt Disney World Entertainment.

Contributing Artists Andrew Sehmann

Andrew is third horn with the Augusta Symphony, and second horn with the South Carolina Philharmonic. He also teaches horn, aural skills, and music appreciation at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. His previous teachers include: Marie-Luise Neunecker, Wolfgang Vladar, Johannes Hinterholzer, Jean Martin-Williams Mick Sehmann, Richard Deane, James Naigus, and Hazel Dean Davis. When not traveling, teaching, or playing he enjoys reading and spending time spouse and dog in Athens.

Michelle Stebleton

Michelle Stebleton is Professor of Horn at Florida State University and member of the Florida State Brass Quintet and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. Since coming to FSU in 1990, she has been awarded the Teaching Incentive Program Award, an Undergraduate Teaching Award, and several large research grants. Through these grants she recorded two compact discs available on MSR Classics: The Horn Works of Paul Basler and MirrorImage at the Opera, a recording of her horn duo with Lisa Bontrager. The Florida State Brass Quintet’s CD Strophes of the Night and Dawn is available through Crystal Records.

JD Shaw

JD Shaw is Associate Professor of Horn at University of South Carolina and was formerly the French hornist with the internationally acclaimed Boston Brass where he was creative director, music arranger and co-owner of the ensemble. JD is an active solo artist and travels extensively throughout the United States as well as many countries in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, JD has also been a featured performer on National Public Radio's Performance Today and the CBS Morning Show.
