DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE A Letter to Members and Friends

Dear Appleton Members,

Just as school buses roll out and football games return to our screens, your museum team has prepared a vibrant cornucopia of fall and winter offerings, including some that are just for members.

Thanks to your support and kind words, the Appleton continues to grow, expanding programs and reaching more individuals, near and far. Your membership has an immediate impact, helping us present 20+ unique exhibitions each year and deliver exceptional arts education and public programs. As part of the College of Central Florida, we also provide onand off-site outreach across Marion, Citrus and Levy counties, serving over 3,000 square miles.

Our upcoming exhibitions explore key themes within the permanent collection, highlighting everything from European masterpieces and Art Deco treasures to photography and modern and contemporary art. The Edith-Marie Gallery showcases Florida artist Betty Ford-Smith and her mesmerizing pinecone quilts. Throughout the first floor, winter holiday cheer returns with the immersive “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition.”

Appleton Art Scene

When you sign up for a class, you can be confident you’ll have the best instructors, supplies and facilities to support your creativity.

Members, don’t forget to use your 10% discount in the Appleton Store and be sure to clip the coupons on the back cover — our business partners proudly support the museum and its members. A few thoughtful stops around town can turn your day into something special.

Finally, I have shared the Appleton QR Code for easy donations to the museum. On behalf of your Appleton team, thank you for helping the museum thrive!

Sincerely, Jason Steuber, Director     Make a donation today:

Fall/Winter 2025 Exhibitions

September 6, 2025–February 22, 2026

Under the Cover of Knowledge: Betty Ford-Smith’s Pinecone Quilts

The Appleton has long been recognized as a statewide leader in collecting, preserving and exhibiting the work of Florida artists. Our newest exhibition, “Under the Cover of Knowledge,” continues that tradition with a compelling spotlight on nationally recognized artist and quilter Betty Ford-Smith (b. 1951) of Sebring. Earlier this year, the Appleton team journeyed to Florida’s Heartland region to meet with the retired educator turned master quilter, whose hand-sewn pinecone quilts carry with them layers of artistic rigor, historical reverence and cultural storytelling.

Ford-Smith’s quilts are striking, contemporary interpretations of the traditional pinecone quilt — a form rooted in African American quilting practices dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Created entirely by hand, each piece can take over six months to complete and with large quilts weighing over 30 pounds. Beginning with a small square at the center, Ford-Smith builds outward in hypnotic spirals using more than 4,000 hand-cut, folded cotton triangles, a process that evokes celestial orbits and the rhythms of nature. Beyond the studio, she continues to deepen her practice by sharing knowledge, mentoring beginners and connecting with fellow quilters across the Southeastern U.S. and beyond.

In “Under the Cover of Knowledge,” visitors will find Ford-Smith’s dazzling works in dialogue with antique quilts, Gee’s Bend quilts, as well as other related artworks. Together they celebrate the power of tradition, the complexity of craft and the resilience of stories stitched through time. Be sure to stop by the Appleton Store for a collector’s tote and Ford-Smith’s book “Pinecone Quilts: Keeping Tradition Alive.”

Deconstructing Self: Work by Seth P. Benzel

Known for his dynamic, layered compositions, Seth P. Benzel takes a deconstructive approach to traditional forms and narratives, creating paintings that pulse between chaos and harmony. His works — rich in texture, bold color and gestural mark-making — evoke introspection, drawing viewers into the complexities of identity and the shifting nature of perception. Benzel’s art becomes a mirror, reflecting the tension between destruction and creation, and prompting us to reconsider the essence of who we are.

On view in the second-floor Preview Gallery, “Deconstructing Self” is an exploration of identity, transformation and the fragmented nature of the human experience through the lens of abstract painting.

Artist Talk and Meet-and-Greet with Seth P. Benzel

A founder of the Ocala Photography Group, Elliott has exhibited his work in solo and group shows since 1973.

A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition

One of Ocala’s most beloved holiday traditions is back, adorning the first floor of the museum in full holiday cheer. “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition” is the private collection of Dr. Paul and Joyce Urban and their daughters Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie, who have lived in Ocala since 1989.

Joyce Urban’s love of Christmas began when she was a child in the city of Philadelphia. Every year she would go see the elaborate decorations at the department stores set up along the path she walked as she went to see Santa. This wonder of Christmas has stayed with her through the years. She began publicly displaying her collection in 1989 because she wanted to provide a place for children of all ages to come experience what she did as a child. Over the years her Christmas Tour has raised money for many local charities including Harvest International, Interfaith, Pilot Club, Women’s Pregnancy Center and the Counseling Resource Center where she worked as a counselor. In 2012, Joyce opened Urban Counseling where she continues her legacy of helping others.

The Urban Family is honored to loan a portion of their Christmas collection to the Appleton during the holiday season. Visitors can look forward to beautifully themed trees, the popular Dickens Village, an extensive nutcracker collection from around the world, and much more. The display is different every year!

Don’t forget to visit the second floor to see trees decorated by local businesses and organizations as part of the Appleton’s annual Community Tree Display.

Holiday Community Day Saturday, December 6, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Admission is free all day to enjoy “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition,” the Community Tree Display, other special exhibitions, and festive crafts in the Artspace. CURATORIAL NEWS Behind the Scenes

Donations Fuel Art Conservation for Future Generations

Since the triumphant return of the trio of bronze elephant fountains to the Appleton’s reflecting pools in March, the team has seen a rise in engagement from members, students, visitors and collectors about how we preserve our world-class collections for future generations. These conversations often lead to an important question: “How can I, as an individual, help safeguard these treasures?”

The Appleton houses over 12,000 works on paper, making it one of the largest such collections in Florida and among academic art museums nationwide. This category includes books, collages, drawings, etchings, posters, prints, watercolors and more. Featured to the right is a recently conserved etching by German-Jewish artist Ernst Oppler (1867–1929).

Join others who have donated $500 to conserve a print — an amount that covers roundtrip shipping and professional conservation treatments, including cleaning and stabilization. Your gift will be acknowledged in the work’s permanent record, and when displayed, the label will include a credit line recognizing you as the conservation donor.
