you call it farm-to-table, farm-to-fork, you-pick, buying local, or any other term, it is clear that the appreciation for high quality, locally grown food products is on the increase. Fulfilling this need is what the Apple Hill Growers have been doing for over fifty years. While we are celebrating the legacy of the many ranches that have become long-term family operations, we are grateful for the many newer families that have brought with them an ever-expanding selection of product offerings and an enthusiasm to supply the best the Apple Hill Growers have to offer. Again, welcome to the Apple Hill Growers’ ranches, and we hope you have a fun-filled trip. Apple Hill and a New Era By Ann Wofford

The lure of owning

a small farm is strong.

In today’s busy world, people yearn for relief from every-day stress by imagining working with soil, touching the food they eat, seeing life begin, flourish and fade away, and then begin again. There is satisfaction in offering to someone else a gift that you created, whether you grew it, baked it, or made it by hand. What was necessary labor for our ancestors has become a goal and a dream. Among the Apple Hill ranch owners today are farmers that come from all walks of life. Yes, we have people who made or are making their living in a business associated with agriculture, whether as farmers or County Agriculture employees, but we also number professors, teachers, engineers, truckers, real estate professionals, accountants, dentists, estheticians, small business owners and white collar professionals in our ranks. Fifty years ago, Apple Hill ranch owners oftentimes worked full-time at their “real” professions because the economic returns on the farm were not covering the bills. Today, many of the kids that grew up on the farm are choosing not to leave but are choosing to put a full days work on the farm-and they know the frustrations firsthand. They have seen their parents struggle with not being able to control the weather, the economic climate, and the vagaries of the buying public. And they have learned. The next generation is bringing fresh ideas, new marketing strategies and what they learned from their parents’ mistakes. Change is good! The hottest item on the Hill is Hard Apple

6

applehill.com

Cider, in addition to traditional non-alcoholic cider, and Millennials are loving this centuries-old beverage recreated for today. Soon there will be an Apple Hill Hard Cider Trail to accompany the always-popular Apple Hill wines available year-round. Farmers Markets are bringing Apple Hill® fruit and other goodies directly to neighborhoods from South Lake Tahoe to the Bay Area. Young people have made the markets a part of their social network, often shopping, cooking and eating together--and they can do that even when they can’t make it to the ranches, because our young farmers are bringing Apple Hill products to them. Just another great idea from our younger colleagues--to be where you want us to be. Speaking of social networking, are you keeping up with Apple Hill events and specials through our Facebook and Instagram pages? Yes, it is one of our own Apple Hill X-generationers who manages the “Apple Hill—Authentic over 50 years” facebook page with an impressive 71K+ likes. Where else is the social media crowd going to see all the fun that awaits them at the Apple Hill ranches? And who better to share the fun but one of our own young legacy farmers! Legacy farming is more than the passing of farms from one generation to the next. It is gleaning ideas from our newest generation of owners to keep our ranches sustainable, marketable and fun for the next generation of visitors! Sometimes change isn’t so bad.

Our Early Farmers – How They Arrived

By Kirk Taylor

Legacy families came to the Apple Hill area for a variety of reasons. Of course, four seasons of scenic beauty, fertile soil and the agreeable climate made staying in the area a life’s passion for the families that laid down roots. It’s these legacy families that have worked hard to preserve agriculture and their inspiration is what makes the Apple Hill experience what it is today. One of the most interesting legacy-family stories was told to me by Marvin Larsen a few years before his untimely death. As he tells it, his great-great-great… grandfather and family made their way to Salt Lake City where he worked for a couple of years in the early 1850’s. He woke his family at midnight one day saying they had to leave quickly. They packed their wagon in the dark and left before sunrise. They made their way across Utah and into Nevada. The relative was afraid they were not moving fast enough, so they buried all of the family heirlooms somewhere in Nevada and hoped to someday recover them. (They are still buried in Nevada and Marvin said no one knew where.) They finally arrive in Mormon Station, Nevada and found a US Calvary unit moving west. They joined the unit and traveled into California. They traveled as far as the Apple Hill region. Two things happened to make them settle in the Camino Area. First, they fell in love with the area and the opportunities available here. Second, they were far enough into California to be safe from their pursuers. The move resulted in the various Larsen family operations currently in Apple Hill. My story follows a slightly different path. My grandfather was from a mining family based out of Oakland, California. He was a US Navy radio operator on the Farallon Islands during World War I. After the war he worked some of the mining operation in the south part of the county. He fell in love with the CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 24 applehill.com

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 area and talked his brother into a partnership where they purchased 145 acres in the Apple Hill region in 1924. His family had a vacation house in Tahoe, so he figured halfway between Oakland and Tahoe was far enough away from family that they wouldn’t just drop by. He moved here with his new bride and started a family. They first built a house with lumber from a hospital that just closed in Pollock Pines. They planted pears in 1925 and became part of El Dorado County. My grandfather, Napoleon (Leo) Ench, served on a number of school boards, organized charity drives during the war, and was a larger than life figure in the community. He was employed by the Placerville Fruit Growers Association as their field representative for over 30 years. You might happen to see on the Apple Hill roads the old orange stack-side truck that my grandfather would drive between the ranches carrying pruning and picking crews. The first man off the truck was responsible for starting a fire so they could start brewing coffee for the crew. The Apple Hill region seems to draw interesting families--back in the early days, in the last several decades and even today. These families strive to produce the best quality commodities and goods for Apple Hill visitors to enjoy. Yet the most amazing thing is how these families become engaged in the community. They are the volunteers, the agricultureal advocates and hard-working moms and dads that lead by example.

Remembering an Apple Hill Founding Father By Dave Bolster The hand painted letters on the mail box at the top of the driveway along Hwy 128 in the Napa Valley town of St Helena simply said “Delfino”. It was here on the farm and vineyard property of Italian immigrants, Frank and Dina Delfino, that their son Edio learned the value of hard work and where he acquired his love of the land. Following his college days at Cal Poly and his service in the Air Force, Edio began his career in public service in Sonoma County. In 1960 he and his wife Joan moved to El Dorado county when Edio was appointed as the El Dorado County Agricultural Commissioner. One of his first accomplishments was to create the El Dorado County Agricultural Commission, an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors regarding agricultural issues that still plays an important role today. His appointment also coincided with the advent of an agricultural disaster in El Dorado. A disease known as pear decline was decimating the county’s 5,000 acre pear industry. In the winter of 1964, searching for answers to save a dying agriculture industry, Edio and local grower Gene Bolster headed to an agritourism region in Southern California known as Oak Glen to scout the area. They returned and reported to local growers that they too could create a similar agritourism program of equal or greater success. The local growers agreed, and in July of ’64 the Apple Hill Growers association was born. A few years later with the initiative of the talented women of Apple Hill, the association created an event known as the Apple Hill Smorgasbord. This wildly successful event put the Apple Hill Growers on the map and the rest is history. In 1972 Edio and Joan opened their Apple Hill family farm operation, Kid’s Incorporated, to the public. Kid’s Inc is still operated by the Delfino family today. In the early 1970’s Edio and Farm Advisor Dick Bethell recognized the potential of El Dorado as a premium wine grape growing region. Working with local growers, they established a number of experimental vineyards at various locations in the county to prove their theory. The quality of the fruit, and consequently the quality of the wine produced from these trial vineyards was outstanding. The now 68 wineries of the El Dorado AVA are a testament to their vision of El Dorado as a premium wine and viticultural region. While Edio’s role in launching Apple Hill and the El Dorado viticulture industry are significant elements of his legacy, his leadership in the protection and preservation of the county’s agricultural lands is equally important. Edio was a fierce and unrepentant advocate of CONTINUED ON PAGE 48 applehill.com

333 North 7th Street v Sacramento, California www.scottnaake.com v 916.443.6611 EDIO DELFINO, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 41 protecting the county’s ag lands. Edio relished the cage fight that was and continues to be land use planning in El Dorado, and he seldom emerged as the loser. Preserving and protecting El Dorado’s ag lands was not just his job, it was in his soul. As a result of his efforts, and the efforts of other community leaders, El Dorado now has six Agricultural Districts that encompass over 66,000 acres of agriculturally zoned property. Lands that are now preserved for future generations of growers, and as rural open space that defines our quality of life. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Ed Delfino, the dynamic, talented, and colorful individual who forever changed the landscape of El Dorado. Whether it was working the farm on his D-2, fighting the good fight to preserve ag lands, or having a cocktail or two with his amigos, Ed lived a full and rewarding life. The Apple Hill Growers honor your legacy, Edio. We bid you farewell and we thank you. Salud! 48 applehill.com

Preserve Our Legacy The following guidelines will help preserve our farms and help make your visit to Apple Hill a quality experience. Come prepared with a supply of paper plates, plastic utensils and cups, so you can purchase whole bakery items or a jug of cider to share with your group. Pack an ice chest to keep your fresh cider and bakery items cold for the trip home. To enjoy a leisurely day driving around the hill, the opportunity to interact with the farmers themselves, and the chance for excellent service, plan a trip for September, November, or December or on a weekday, avoiding lines and traffic on busy October weekends. Note that the “You-Pick” activity is restricted to identified “You-Pick” farms listed on applehill. com and in the Cider Press. Picking fruit on farms that do not offer “YouPick” can cause safety problems and destruction of precious orchards and vines. Also please remember that all fruit picked, eaten, or taken home must be purchased as these fruits are the farmers’ livelihood. Apple Hill Grower farms provide containers, so visitors can dispose their trash and help keep our farms litter free. In partnership with El Dorado Disposal, farms also actively promote recycling by providing recycling receptacles. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own personal water bottles and refill with fresh, mountain water available from faucets on most farms. Please respect the farmers’ land. Note the posted hours that individual farms are open. Many farmers and their families live on the properties, and the farmers, as well as their neighbors, appreciate respect for their property and privacy when the farms 50 applehill.com

are closed to business. Professional photography is allowed only by permission from property owners. Many farms welcome pets on leashes and their handlers who “always scoop poop and place in a garbage can. Pets should not be left unattended at any time. Only Service Animals are permitted in areas where food is sold or prepared. Be safe. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on rural lands. Children should be supervised at all times. While there is plenty of open space for children to run and play, climbing orchard trees is prohibited both for the safety of the children and to protect the trees’ production potential for the following season. Wagons, rather than large strollers, are recommended to transport small children on orchard terrain. Often large strollers cannot be accommodated in the limited space of barn sales areas. For a quality experience, look for the unique AH grower sign of quality identifying members of the Apple Hill Growers. Fifty Growers take pride in displaying the Apple Hill sign and in being identified on the official Apple Hill Grower Map. Information on all ranches can be found in the Cider Press and at applehill.com. Also the growers themselves are knowledgeable and happy to answer your questions about their Apple Hill Grower neighbor farms.

Ripe By Pam Olivarez Are you looking for a healthy,

Picking

educational and enriching family activity? With today’s fast paced lifestyle, a perfect way to unwind, breathe in the fresh air and spend quality time with your family is to visit an Apple Hill farm and pick your own fruit, pumpkin or Christmas tree. There is a trend that has emerged over the past several years--a return to healthy food and a desire for parents to have their children understand where food comes from. When you-pick your own fruit, you know you are getting farm-fresh, perfectly ripe produce. Knowing in what season

Blackberry Oatmeal Crumb Bars INGREDIENTS For the crust and topping 1 ¾ stick cold butter, cut into pieces 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 ½ cup old fashioned oats 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt pinch of cinnamon – optional ¼ cup pecans, chopped - optional For the blackberry filling 2 cups fresh Apple Hill blackberries, halved 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice 1 TBSP cornstarch ¾ cup granulated white sugar Preheat the oven 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x9 pan with butter; set aside. Slice cold butter into little pieces; set aside. In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, salt, baking powder and oats. Add chopped pecans and cinnamon, if using. Add sliced butter. Use a pastry blender to blend in the butter or using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, turn on low and allow mixture to crumb together. Don’t over mix, you want it to be crumbly. Spread just enough mixture on the bottom of pan to cover it and gently press it in. Cut the blackberries in half, toss them with the lemon juice, cornstarch and sugar. Sprinkle them over the crust in the pan. Cover with the other half of the dough mixture. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or till lightly browned. Let cool completely before cutting. 52 applehill.com

fruit becomes available is a good lesson for children to learn! Apple Hill farms offer a variety of “you-pick” experiences from summer through winter. June rings in the summer fruit season that runs through August with the ripening of delicious and healthful blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. These super-foods can be frozen to enjoy all year long! Lavender and fresh vegetable picking are also fun summer Apple Hill you-pick outings that the whole family will enjoy. Fall brings you-pick opportunities with the ripening of apples, pumpkins, grapes and chestnuts. In September, imagine the excitement CONTINUED ON PAGE 54

Blueberry Broccoli Spinach Salad INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALAD: 4 oz fresh baby spinach ½ cup chopped broccoli ½ a ripe avocado ¼ cup fresh Apple Hill blueberries ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese 2-4 TBSP dried cranberries 2-4 TBSP roasted sunflower seeds (try unsalted) black pepper, to taste (optional)

POPPY SEED RANCH DRESSING: ½ cup of plain greek yogurt or sour cream ¼ cup of buttermilk (extra if desired) ¼ cup good quality mayonnaise (homemade or store bought) 1 clove garlic ½ tsp lemon juice or white vinegar 1 tsp poppy seeds ½ tsp dried parsley ½ tsp dried dill ¼ tsp onion powder ¼ tsp paprika 1 ⁄8-¼ tsp garlic powder, to taste 1 ⁄8 tsp sea salt 1 ⁄8 tsp black pepper

1. Start with the dressing (skip if using premade) 2. Ranch dressing always tastes it’s absolute best made ahead of time. Whisk and chill for a few hours before serving or make things simple by tossing it together the night before. 3. Peel 1 clove of garlic, then smash and mince it into a paste. 4. Season with salt. 5. Combine salted garlic paste with remaining dressing ingredients and whisk well. 6. Pop in the fridge to chill for a few hours for flavors to set. 7. Wash + dry spinach. 8. Combine with broccoli, blueberries, dried cranberries, avocado, feta cheese, and sunflower seeds. 9. Toss with dressing and serve. 10. Season with black pepper, to taste. NOTES This recipe yields one extra-large personal salad or 2 smaller side salads. This dressing works with both fresh and dried herbs, so absolutely use what fresh herbs you have on hand. Measurements above for dried, which are a little stronger in flavor, so when using fresh you’ll simply increase the amount to taste. Enjoy! Making more dressing for later? Typical food safety rule of thumb is that homemade dressings will keep in the fridge for 4 days. applehill.com

as your children learn how to pick an apple from the tree. Keep in mind that by October, most you-pick apple varieties have been picked but you-pick concord grapes are ripe for picking. October is the month to cut-from-the-vine that perfect pumpkin for Halloween and in November, you-pick chestnuts become available. Please keep in mind that most Apple Hill fruit is not you-pick fruit. Many Apple Hill farmers use their fruit to make pies, cider and other apple products. Most of the Apple Hill grapes are used to make wine. Don’t forget to make your holiday season extra special by visiting an Apple Hill Christmas Tree farm to select the family Christmas tree. You’ll find Christmas trees in every shape, size and variety. Freshly cut trees last longer and their fragrance is an added Christmas bonus! Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a hot chocolate, hot apple cider or coffee on a brisk winter day at the farm. Many families have made their Christmas tree cutting an annual event and have passed the tradition on for generations. Our Apple Hill farmers take great pride in bringing to you a quality experience while preserving the quality of the product and the environment. Of course, there are a few “dos and don’ts” to make your you-pick experience a memorable one for both your family and your host farmer: DO: Respect the farm and the hard work that goes into making quality products available for you to pick, which means following the farmer’s instructions for picking. Enjoy the outdoors and let the entire family share in the picking experience. If you bring your pet, keep it leashed and carry a bag for pick up and disposal of dog waste into a trashcan. Ask questions and learn about the farm. Keep in mind that the Apple Hill farms are individually owned and maintained. Your you54 applehill.com

pick visit is anticipated and welcomed by the farms that allow picking. Only pick at those farms that have designated you-pick fruit. DON’T: Don’t pick and leave unwanted fruit on the ground or break branches/vines. Don’t smoke cigarettes in dry areas, and, of course, don’t leave cigarette butts or garbage on the ground. These items are trash and should be appropriately disposed of. Finally, for your family’s safety and the health of future fruit, never climb on youpick trees or vines. Check the “You-Pick” charts on page 37 of this guide for Apple Hill farms that offer you-pick opportunities and enjoy your outing! Summer: Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Vegetables, Lavender Fall: Apples, Pumpkins, Grapes, Pumpkins, Chestnuts Winter: Christmas Trees

you call it farm-to-table, farm-to-fork, you pick, buying local, or any other term, it is clear that the appreciation for high quality, locally grown food products is on the increase. Again, welcome to the Apple Hill Grower’s ranches, and we hope you have a fun-filled trip. Be sure to also visit the many local businesses, dining, and lodging establishments to round out your Apple Hill Experience. Ron Sbragia, Apple Hill Growers President Apple Hill Growers SM
