Altstätten – Gais line This picturesque rack railway section connects the small town of Altstätten in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley with Gais in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The Alpine foothills around Gais are an ideal area for serious hiking and Nordic walking.
Rorschach – Heiden line Enjoy an exciting journey, sitting in open carriages when the weather is good, from Lake Constance up to the Biedermeier village of Heiden. Here you can discover the Henry-Dunant-Museum or take a walk along the entertaining «Witzweg» joke trail to Walzenhausen.
Rheineck – Walzenhausen line Dating back more than 100 years, the rack railway ferries passengers from Rheineck to Walzenhausen. This is also a stage in the Special Round Trip with two aerial cable cars and boat trip (summer season) as well as a start/end point for the Joke Trail.
St. Gallen – Trogen line Enjoy a varied excursion with outstanding views of St. Gallen, Lake Constance and the Alpstein mountain range. The little stations along this line are ideal starting points for hikes in the region of St. Gallen.

Appenzell The village of Appenzell with its colourfully painted houses in the car-free high street draws guests from near and far. An array of specialist shops, traditional craft workshops, family hotels and cafes with local specialities offer an invitation to take things easy. Public guided tours in German through the village from mid-June to mid-October 2013 every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 am. Tours start from the Appenzell Tourist Information Office.
Gais The countryside around Gais stands through in a intact nature inviting you to linger and relax. The wide range of activities on offer includes relaxation, sports, culture and health. Summer and winter hiking trails, a host of places to eat out with regional specialities and a full event calendar round off the many choices. The health resort with the marvellous historic village centre is easiest to get to using public transport.

Heiden High up on a sunny terrace overlooking Lake Constance lies the «Biedermeier» village of Heiden. It makes an excellent starting point for walks to various different attractions. Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, also valued the tranquillity and the landscape of this village of 4000 souls. From May to October 2013 regular, free guided tours through to the «Biedermeier» village of Heiden.
Herisau Part town, part village – that’s Herisau. Nestling in, but not enclosed by, the gentle hills of Appenzellerland, it is a cosmopolitan place that has close links with Säntis, Zurich and the region of Lake Constance. Despite its 15,000 inhabitants it is not a town, it is the largest village in Switzerland – offering the benefits of both town and village life.

Trogen The village of Trogen sits majestically atop a hill, commanding a view of the surrounding Appenzellerland. It confidently calls itself the «Village of Culture» and backs this up with its several art institutes, the Pestalozzi Children’s Village, Palais Bleu, Culturehouse Vordorf and local active artists. The stone palaces built by the Zellweger textile dynasty in the 18th century are impressive, grouped around the former cantonal capital’s main square. Urnäsch The village of Urnäsch nestles quietly among the gentle hills of the Appenzell Hinterland at the foot of Säntis, Appenzell’s own mountain. This family-friendly village with its picturesque square invites visitors to linger awhile. Urnäsch fully deserves its reputation as a stronghold of Appenzellerland customs with the traditional highlights of the year including Silvesterchlausen (New Years`s mummer processions), Bloch, Striichmusigtag (musical event), Alpfahrt (cattle drive to the Alpine pastures), «Sennenball» (traditional music event) and «Stobete» (Herdsmen’s Ball). Silvesterchlausen (New Year’s mummer processions) On December 31 and January 13 (the old New Year’s Eve) the Silvesterchlausen processions make their way around the Appenzell Hinterland and some villages in the Mittelland. If December 31 and January 13 fall on a Sunday, the Silvesterchlausen processions take place on December 30 and January 12. Silvesterchlausen is one of the most impressive winter customs in Appenzellerland. There are three different types of «Chläuse»: «ugly», «beautiful» and «ugly/beautiful». They almost always appear in groups (known locally as «Schuppel»). At break of dawn on New Year’s Eve many of these groups are already out in the countryside walking from house to house, yodelling and wishing friends and neighbours happiness and prosperity for the New Year. Gidio Hosestoss On Ash Wednesday (afternoon) in Herisau und Waldstatt, Gidio Hosestoss is brought to his last resting place in a Karneval procession. A straw effigy of Gidio Hosestoss, who choked to death on a stolen cake, is borne on a float accompanied by weeping schoolchildren dressed as mourners. Various events that happened during the previous year are often depicted on the other floats and are presented at the funeral in the form of humorous poems. Date: Wednesday, 13 February 2013

Bloch The «Bloch» is a unique Karneval custom in which a tree trunk («Bloch») is tied to a decorated float and dragged through the local villages. Every other year on the Monday before Ash Wednesday men drag the «Bloch» from Urnäsch to Waldstatt and Herisau and then back again to Urnäsch. In Hundwil, Stein and Schwellbrunn young lads drag the «Bloch» on «Blochmontag» (Monday after Ash Wednesday) to their villages along various preset routes. The floats are dragged by several pairs of men or lads holding wooden poles attached to a rope. The clothing and outfits of the team represent professions that are connected with timber. Innerrhoder Landsgemeinde in Appenzell Some 3000 of the citizens of Appenzell Innerrhoden meet on the last Sunday in April in the square in Appenzell to form the traditional Landsgemeinde (local open-air parliament). The Landsgemeinde is the highest local electoral and legislative authority which decides on amendments to the constitution, legislation, initiatives, major financial decisions and common law at the discretion of the Cantonal Grand Council. Votes are cast by acclamation of the voters to the Landsgemeinde. The majority of the population still adhere strongly to this manner of government, even after women were allowed to vote in 1991. Alpfahrt The Alpfahrt (cattle drive to the Alpine pastures) in early summer remains a red-letter day in the farming calendar. The long trek up the mountain begins in the small hours. From far away you can hear the sonorous harmony of the three coordinated cowbells, the yodelling of the herdsmen, the deep lowing of the cattle and the yapping of the Appenzell mountain dogs. And at the end of the Alpine summer (mid/late September) the herdsmen return from the Alps with their cattle. Date: Dates will be announced shortly beforehand. Alpstobete During the Alpine summer «Alpstobete» dances are held in various mountain inns. A group of local string musicians play lively dance music to celebrate the end of the Alpine summer. These «Stobeten» are one of the traditional customs of the local herdsmen and are a highpoint of this time of the year. Cattle show Individual cattle shows are held in the various villages of Ausserrhoden, while in Innerrhoden the Cantonal Cattle Show takes place in Appenzell at the beginning of October. Many farmers lead their herds to the show with all the trappings of the cattle drive to the summer pastures, much to the delight of the spectators lining the streets. They all then pass into an arena through a wooden triumphal arch. The jury assesses the animals according to their looks and performance. In the evening, when the cattle have returned home to their stalls, the farmers meet to receive their prizes and the evening culminates in traditional rural festivities with singing, yodelling and dancing. Appenzell music The musical tradition of Appenzell takes on many different forms. Music for strings played in its original setting (two violins, dulcimer, cello and double bass) is particularly important; an accordion and a piano are also present in some musical ensembles.The second aspect that is equally important in Appenzell music concerns the vowel sounds. In addition to yodelling songs and Ratzliedli (humorous songs and songs to tease people), choral ensembles also sing pieces without words as a form of yodelling. This practice is known as Rugguusseli in the canton of Innerrhoden and Zäuerli in the canton of Ausserrhoden.

Folk artists/painters The traditional craft of Appenzell peasant art attracts a lot of interest still today. The imagery and the rural landscapes are typical for this folk art. Let yourself be inspired by painting and visit the artists. Hammer dulcimer makers The dulcimer is a very old instrument; the oldest picture was found in Persia. It has been known in Switzerland since the 16th century, and also in the Appenzellerland. They say that it was the gypsies that brought this instrument with them. The traditional pine wood dulcimer is trapezoidal in shape and has 125 strings. Woodworkers (cows, Alpine cattle drives) Cow, goat or dog, the little animals are carved from wood and embellished with details. Craftsmen (Bell saddlers) Skilled craftsmanship is required for the decoration of the highly detailed belt buckles, braces clasps or bell straps. The chasing techniques of Appenzell‘s skilled alpine craftsmen bring traditional Appenzell motifs to life on brass, nickel silver, silver or even gold. Silversmiths and goldsmiths A classic marriage of tradition and the modern: Traditional, high-quality handicrafts combined with the latest precious metal working methods. Embroiderers In the past, hand embroidery provided an income for peasant families. For a few money children and women had to embroider until their fingers were sore. However, there are still women today who master this craft.

Traditional Costumehouse Traditional Appenzell costumes, artfully presented. The alpine dairymen embark on the trek to the alpine pastures clad in yellow hose, a red waistcoat, a black hat adorned with flowers and ribbons, studded braces, and white knee-length socks. The lace embroidery («SpitzliStickerei») the size of a 2-franc coin on the white collars of the women‘s costumes takes seven hours to complete by hand. The yellow trousers of the alpine dairymen are dyed using a secret, home-made blend of dyes. Wood coopers Wood cooperage describes the handicraft whereby the carved wooden equipment for mountain dairy farming and cheese production are manufactured from light maple and fir wood. Allow yourself to be initiated into this traditional craft by the professionals and see how the famous «Fahreimer» buckets are made.
