Heiden The Biedermeier village of Heiden is situated on a sunny terrace high above Lake Constance.

Foreland AR Trogen The impressive Zellweger palaces dominate the centre of the Trogen «village of culture».

Gais The scenery in and around Gais is authentic and entices you to linger and relax.

The Appenzellerland offers a surprising amount of variety. Located between Lake Constance and the Alpstein massif, the lovely scenery of rolling hills, pastures, scattered settlements and views of the lake invite you to take unforgettable journeys of discovery. Just see for yourself. The Appenzellerland consists of two halfcantons: Appenzell Ausserrhoden (AR) and Appenzell Innerrhoden (AI). Geographically, the area is divided into four regions: Foreland, Midland, Hinterland and the Appenzell-Alpstein, which is part of Appenzell Innerrhoden. In 1597 Appenzell was split in two, due to two different religions. Even today, the Catholic Innerrhoden and the Protestant Ausserrhoden maintain subtle cultural differences. Important to both, however, is their love of their common traditions, which are still lived today just as vividly and authentically as in times past. Visitors are as impressed as they are touched when they witness these colourful customs. For more picturesque villages: www.appenzellerland.ch/regions

Peter Eggenberger, inventor of the joke trail.

Shorty has the last laugh Appenzeller jokes are clever – and are often based on the David vs. Goliath principle: the smaller players outsmart their bigger counterparts. There are reasons for this. The Appenzeller people are generally not that tall. It is possible that over the centuries they learned to use their wittiness to stand their ground. The fact is that the protagonists in the Appenzeller jokes are usually particularly smart. The proof is in the punchlines, which are always cunningly apt and take the listener by surprise. One person who knows the secret of the success of the Appenzeller jokes is Peter Eggenberger. «Everyone can identify with the underdog. In this way the joke becomes a social leveller,» the gifted storyteller explains. Eggenberger has co-authored several humorous books with Ruedi Rohner. And he noted something else: «Appenzeller jokes never hit below the belt. There is no room for sleaziness or offensive ele-

ments.» When Peter Eggenberger had the idea for a very special hiking trail in Heiden back in 1993, many people probably thought he was joking. But he was perfectly serious. Lucky for us. Since then his trail, with jokes on 40 panels along the way, has been a great source of entertainment. Incidentally, the jokes are replaced every three years. Another reason for hikers to return time and time again.

Remo Vetter in his «adventure pharmacy», as he affectionately calls the show garden.

The healing power of the Appenzeller flora The pioneer of naturopathy, Alfred Vogel, wrote his successful books on health in Teufen. His show garden is open to visitors to this day. A. Vogel GmbH’s public show garden on Teufen’s southern slopes is a feast for the eyes, not just for nature and plant aficionados. «More than 120 different medicinal herbs as well as heritage fruit and vegetable varieties thrive here,» explains Remo Vetter, who has been in charge of the garden and the company for over 30 years. As managing director he has helped shape the development of the garden and knows, from many personal encounters, what impresses the visitors most. «The garden is a magnificent refuge with many quiet places where visitors can sit down and enjoy the peace. This is a place

where you can rest your soul.» Remo Vetter works in the garden for at least one hour every day. This is work that, for him, has a meditative aspect and which he does not want to do without. He likes to show visitors the way to the little museum where they can learn more about Alfred Vogel’s exciting life and times. And visitors who walk on towards the «Waldegg Adventure» will enjoy the halfhour stroll along the herbal trail. Another very special place to savour.

A delicious journey into the past «Jock» is a very special type of host; with his quirky sense of humour he makes everyone else in the «Schnuggebock» laugh. And what comes from the kitchen only adds to the good mood. He may only be the stable boy, but Jock is someone who takes it easy and prefers to sit down to talk to the guests. «I just show them Granny’s farmhouse and tell them about the hard life of farmers in the old days. But I also know a bit about our customs and the animals up here,» the modest «Jock» explains. The truth is that he is full of stories and anecdotes peppered with cunning Appenzeller jokes that have everyone bending over with laughter. This makes every visit to the

«Schnuggebock» a unique experience. But the motto is always the same: the best of yesteryear. Accordingly, the kitchen serves hearty dishes, which are, of course, prepared using Granny’s recipes. A genuine experience. Especially when «Jock» appears in his traditional Sunday best or workday clothes.

Stable boy Jock likes to spend his time at the «Schnuggebock» inn in the «Waldegg Adventure».

Andreas Hinterberger knows the secret of the most exquisite types of cheese.

Discover the most refined and delicious cheeses A fact to savour: every year nine million litres of milk from the region are processed in Gais to make cheese specialties. From strong mountain cheese to the tenderly melting raclette variety. He is a passionate cheesemaker and has close ties to the farmers in the region. This is because Andreas Hinterberger, proprietor of the mountain cheese dairy in Gais, processes milk from some 60 farms in the vicinity. He knows every farmer personally. «I regularly visit the mountain farms. So I know that the cows get out to pasture every day and that the milk quality is excellent.» Andreas Hinterberger carefully chooses the cultures for making his cheeses, ensures smooth production processes and meticulously looks after the cheese during the ripening process, which can take up to eight months. Apart from semi-hard and mountain cheese varie-

ties, he mainly produces raclette cheese in Gais. His ripening storehouse can hold up to 60 000 cheese wheels. That makes his company the biggest independent cheese dairy in Appenzellerland. But he still has to do all the work himself. From purchasing to production to selling, he does it all. He very obviously enjoys his work. «It gives me great satisfaction to see the finished product and to know that I did it all from start to finish.»

A prime spot on Mount Gäbris Anyone who thinks that you need to climb the highest mountains to get the best views will think again after visiting Mount Gäbris. From here you can enjoy views deep into central Switzerland. Without doubt, Mount Gäbris offers a very special viewing experience, even though its summit is only 1250 metres above sea level. The broad vistas that spread out before the visitor’s eyes are beyond compare. If the weather is right, the Rhine Valley, Vorarlberg, the Alpstein massif as well as the Glarner, Central Swiss and Berner Alps can all be taken in as one sweeping panorama. Around 400 summits can be seen from here. The highest is the Finsteraarhorn (4274 met-

res above sea level), which is 123 kilometres away. And as a special bonus Lake Constance also shimmers on the horizon. Mount Gäbris is accessible via Trogen or Gais on different routes for hikers, snowshoers and mountain bikers. No matter which way you choose, the view from the restaurant, which is open all year round, will amaze you time and time again.

Lillyweg trail A themed trail that will delight old and young alike. The story of brother and sister Lilly and Martin on their way to visit their Uncle Sämi, who lives high up in the mountains, is told at 14 stations along the way. The tableaux are lovingly designed in a rural style by painter Lilly Langenegger and they offer inspiration for a number of activities: you will build little stone men with your children, play with the «ball train», and dare to do the «Fitzwire test», balance atop fallen tree trunks and learn new things about Mount Säntis. For bigger children there’s a climbing rock and the little ones learn a rhyme to help them climb the stairs. So you’ll take home more than just fond memories! 26

Alp Fischegg – an oasis of tranquillity and hospitality Experience the life of a mountain farmer. That is what guests can expect when they arrive at the Lillybeizli inn or stay overnight on Alp Fischegg amidst the mountain pastures deep in the valley of the Urnäsch River.

Daniela and Ueli Biser are very happy with their life on the Alp Fischegg mountain farm.

For further information: www.appenzellerland.ch

Farmer Ueli Biser lives on the mountain with 20 cows, 20 calves, goats and two horses from May to mid-September. The «Fischegg» mountain pastures are located off the road on the way to Schwägalp, around 850 metres above sea level. The Biser family has worked the 43 hectares of land for 20 years. «We move up here with our livestock for the pasture season,» Ueli Biser says. Farming is his passion and the customs of the alpine dairymen are important to him. «We are what we are, it is quite simple.» Daniela Biser knows that the Lillybeizli guests appreciate the calm and closeness to nature. The inn is located on the Lillyweg trail, a stage of the agricultural trail from Urnäsch up to the Schwägalp mountain pastures. The kitchen serves wholesome fare, and fondue or raclette can be pre-ordered along with the local dairy specialities «Rohmzonne» and «Fenz». The «Fischegg» can provide lodging and a farmer’s breakfast for up to 40 guests. «We have all kinds of people here,» says Ueli Biser, smiling, and adds that he has to clear up quickly in the evening, «because our guests want to sit with me and chat». 28

Lilly Langenegger at the kitchen table where her rural-style paintings were created.

An author like a character from a children’s book The Lillyweg trail was named after her and her drawings. A portrait of Lilly Langenegger, a remarkable woman who celebrates traditional Appenzeller art. The traditional rural-style painting is as much a part of the Appenzellerland as its cheeses. The quaint drawings that can be found everywhere here bear witness to this fact. Lilly Langenegger has made this style of art her own – although she is from Zurich originally. She married into the «Bommes» farm in Gais in 1969. «At the time I sketched the landscape outdoors and then took many hours to finish the paintings in detail at home.» At some point she had the idea of creating children’s books. Her four children were soon grown up

and Lilly Langenegger had more time on her hands again. Her books «Little Tiger Comes Home», «Bläss and Zita» and «Flöckli, the Little Goat» all became bestsellers. When the Lillyweg trail was opened in 2006, she published a matching colouring book. In recent years Lilly Langenegger has not painted as much for health reasons. However, she has always remained true to her motifs.

Where customs are still part of daily life The calendar sets the pace of Appenzell life – to this day. «Alpfahrt» cattle drives ascending to the alpine pastures start in mid-May, with the herdsmen dressed in their festive folk costumes. Wearing a «Kranzrock», or traditional skirt, cameo jewellery and a «Mailändertuch», or Milanese scarf, the locals then set off to the «Stobete», the merry herdsmen’s festival featuring a string music ensemble. In the autumn, following a colourful procession back down from the high pastures, the most beautiful cows are crowned at the cattle shows. 40

Alpfahrt For many farming families the best day of the year is when they «öbere fahret», or drive their herds in May/June up to the high pastures at the foot of the Alpstein massif. The goats take the lead, followed by cows, steers, calves and herdsmen in their folk dress. Bringing up the rear is the farmer with his «Bläss», the Appenzeller cattle-dog. From far and wide, the ringing of the bells, the lowing of the herd and the yodelling accompaniment echo through the valleys. The animals spend eight to ten weeks on the mountainside and then return to the valley. Both the ascent and descent are unforgettable pageants.

s as n io it d a r t r e v Disco in alive today as r’s times the great- grandfa Stobeten «Alpstobete» is a tradition from days long past. Herdsmen once used to visit one another in summer while their herds were up in the mountains, sitting together «i de Stobe», or in the parlour. The locals still meet up today at the mountain inns during July and August for the «Stobete». The string music ensemble strikes up a merry tune, the herdsmen perform the «Mölirad», or Mill Wheel Dance, and a couple clad in colourful traditional costumes dances the «Hierig», or Mime Dance. Exhilarating moments to which visitors are also cordially invited. Cattle shows Beauty contests – of a different sort. In the autumn, the Ausserrhoden communities put on cattle shows to crown the most beautiful and productive cows. A highlight of the year 41

for the farmers and herdsmen. Usually they appear in folk costumes, proudly line up their animals – and enjoy the collective «Abloo», or bell ringing and yodelling. An event of quaint charm that attracts a large audience and enchants visitors. Silvesterchlausen In the Appenzellerland, the new year is celebrated twice. On the 31st of December, following the Gregorian calendar, in Urnäsch, Herisau, Waldstatt, Hundwil, Stein, Schwellbrunn, Schönengrund and Teufen. And, according to the Julian calendar, on the 13th of January in Urnäsch and Waldstatt. This is when the mummers’ processions, or «Silvesterchlausen», are under way. From early in the morning, the New Year’s mummers make their way from house to house with devotional chanting and elated «Zäuerli», or yodelling, wishing everyone «es guets Neus», a Happy New Year. In the evening they frequent the inns until midnight. An insider tip:

If you’d like to take part on the evening, you should reserve a table at one of the inns. By the way: When the 13th of January falls on a Sunday, the processions take place on the preceding Saturday. Bloch The Urnäscher Bloch is under way every other year on Carnival Monday. In Hundwil, Stein, Schwellbrunn and more recently also in Herisau, the Bloch, or tree trunk, is hauled on a decorated float through the neighbouring villages on Bloch Monday (the Monday after Ash Wednesday), accompanied by whip cracking and a brass band. Its origins: lumberjacks used to receive a tree trunk as a token of appreciation. The procession consists of men (in Urnäsch and Herisau) or boys whose costumes depict professions that have to do with timber.

Traditional handcraft with wood Occupations can be found in the Appenzellerland that have become rare elsewhere. The white cooper Hans Reifler is still at work today making items from local wood that beguile with their simple beauty. Hans Reifler’s workshop is pervaded by the pleasant smell of freshly worked wood. Sawn blanks, small boards and unfinished pieces are scattered all around. In their midst stands Hans Reifler, who has been directing the white cooperage here since 1992 as the third generation in the family business, showing great dedication and a love of the age-old craft. «We work with pale maple and fir wood that we purchase ourselves, have processed at the sawmill and then let dry,» says Hans Reifler. In his workshop, the white cooper then cuts the wood and crafts it into his unique products.

n the early days, the white coopers primarily produced implements for dairy farming and cheese making. «But that was long ago. Today, we mostly make household items or gifts for weddings, birthdays or anniversaries of all kinds,» says Hans Reifler. The broad product range is displayed in the shop next to the workshop: umbrella stands, pepper mills, cheese platters, Appenzell milk pails, serving trays and much, much more. Insider tips for gourmets

If you value regional products and close-to-nature production processes, the Appenzellerland is the place for you. You’ll find here a wide range of domestic products for quenching «Hunger ond Dorscht». The most famous of them all is Appenzeller cheese, which gets its unique tangy flavour from a secret herbal brine. In the village of Stein and on the Schwägalp mountainsides, you can learn all about how the cheese is made. When it comes to meat, the Siedwurst boiled sausage and the Pantli smoked sausage stand out, as does the Mostbröckli, a piece of raw meat cured in a seasoning mix and then smoked and dried. In Gonten, mineralrich water is pumped and bottled as is or with added flavouring. Crystal-clear spring water from the Alpstein massif makes Appenzeller beer a one-of-a-kind treat. A secret

combination of spices, honey and almond filling are the ingredients for the Appenzeller Biber cake on offer at many local bakeries. And to round off a congenial evening there’s nothing like an Appenzeller Alpenbitter, which gets its typical flavour from no less than 42 different herbs.
