We live in a wonderful community, filled with people and businesses that make us the envy of every other region in the state.

That is why it is always our pleasure to put on our annual “Best of North Atlanta” contest, recognizing these award-winning businesses, as voted on by you, our readers.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the contest, so we decided to do something a little different and publish this magazine so that everyone flipping through the pages will know the best places to shop, eat and employ professional services.

It is always a tall order to know exactly how many categories we should promote for voting. This year, we narrowed the choices of categories to 100 and with over 10,000 votes we set a company record with an almost 30 percent increase in votes over last year! It also speaks to the quality of the award and what an honor it is to receive it.

If your business did not fall under one of the categories we promoted, and you would like it to be considered next year, just let us know.

By Dr. Jeff Jordan Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this Dr. jordan community!

My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives!

Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996.

Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen

patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family.

We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years.

The Mansions of Alpharetta Bright, fun and fiercely independent, Mansions at Alpharetta resident Katie Croye has always done it her way.

Katie began her married life as a dedicated wife and mother and enjoyed raising her children until they entered college. With an empty nest and after the loss of her husband, she decided to “get out into the world again” and began her tenure as a professional, employed with an office supply company in West Virginia. “I got to travel some and as a widow, working gave me something to do,” said Katie.

When her job ended and with the encouragement of her children, Katie made the decision to move in with her daughter in North Carolina.

“My dear daughter worried herself to death about me, and of course, I worried about living with her!”

Not wanting to be a burden, Katie decided to move closer to another daughter in Alpharetta, but not to move into her home. Senior independent living seemed the best alternative for Katie, and thankfully, her search for the perfect community didn’t last long; She became the fifth person to put down a deposit on a new construction apartment home at The Mansions at Alpharetta.

Moving to The Mansions was easier than she anticipated. When asked what

was the first thing she did when she moved in to her beautiful new home, Katie replied, “I got rid of my car. I love getting in our Mansions bus and going places. No more driving for me!”

Katie also stays busy. As a proud member of The Mansions Welcoming Committee she works tirelessly meeting with new residents to make them feel at home. She says it’s a labor of love. “Our committee makes sure our new residents don’t eat alone. We go with them to many of the activities and we introduce them to other residents. Moving can be scary and the committee does all we can to make them feel comfortable in their new community.”

Katie shared, “You know, I just want to have fun and something is always going on here at The Mansions. I play bridge, my meals are served to me -- I’m a great cook but I just don’t like to cook anymore. I have many very, very close friends, I have my own schedule and I enjoy every minute of living here at The Mansions.”

Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try

to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued.

How did you react to the news of winning both these titles?

To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. After becoming a boardcertified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery.

You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for?

Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers.

As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening,

and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression!

Ankle & Foot Center of Georgia’s tips to maintain happy feet in the Cold weather • It’s important to take care of your feet all year long.

Especially, during the cold weather so that they are ready for spring when the season begins for more activity.

• According to APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association), most Americans would have walked 75,000 miles by the age of 50 years old. So, it is little wonder, that the foot pain affects the daily activities such as walking, exercising, or standing for long periods of time.

To all our readers: • Raise, point and curl your toes for five seconds on each foot. Repeat 10 times. Rotate your ankles to relax your feet.

Cup your heel and rotate each ankle slowly five times to help loosen ankle joints.

• Massage your feet; it releases tension, improves circulation, and rejuvenates

the skin after a long day of walking and standing. Use aromatherapy lotions to improve the experience.

• Elevate your legs, especially if you have a sit-down job.

They should be elevated to the level of the heart or above to reduce swelling.

To our athletic readers: • Winter skiing and snowboarding season is coming – Make sure you use appropriate ski boots that fit properly. You should be able to wiggle your toes, but the heels, and balls of your feet should be immobilized by the boot. Use orthotics (support devices that go inside the shoes) to help control the foot’s movements inside the skin boots or ice skates.

• Committed Runners don’t let cold weather get in the way.

Instead of compensating for icy conditions by altering how the foot strikes the

ground, shorten the stride to maintain stability. And always remember to stretch before the run. It’s more important to warm the muscles in the winter than in the summer.

• Most importantly, don’t try to tip-toe through winter snow or ice in summer appropriate footwear.

To our diabetic readers: • Diabetes affects circulation and nerve function in the feet. That combined with the cold weather can be devastating.

• Never go barefoot – even inside! Proper shoe gear is the key in avoiding complications. Staying active aids in maintaining circulation, which is very critical in diabetics.

• Maintain skin moisture. Wash and inspect feet daily. Watch out for changes in skin color, sores, swelling, blisters,

peeling, cracking etc. Early detection and treatment by a podiatrist may limit complications.

• Vascular disease is very commonly seen in diabetic feet. That’s why regular foot exams by a Podiatrist my help prevent serious complications.

When undiagnosed, it could also lead to amputations.

Symptoms may include leg pain, fatigue, rest pain, skin wounds or sores or ulcers that either heal very slowly or not heal at all. It is also possible that there are no symptoms but there are visual changes on the legs and feet that Ankle & Foot Centers of Georgia’s podiatrist can detect!

In practice since 1995 Dr. Sergio Joseph Pausa, D.M.D., M.S. is a native of Atlanta, GA, where he attended Woodward Academy High School. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia and his graduate degree at The Medical College of Georgia in 1989. He completed a 2-year residency in Hospital Dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by a 4-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Medical College of Georgia in 1995.

Dr. Pausa has been in practice since 1995, associating in a two-surgeon practice in Birmingham, AL for three years before returning to his home state in 1998. For the last 19 years Dr. Pausa has served the Alpharetta/ Roswell community through his affiliation with North Fulton Wellstar Hospital and North Fulton Community Charities.

Champion Physical Therapy Matt Foltz is a native of Roswell, GA and has been practicing physical therapy for over 22 years in the Atlanta/North Metro area, specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine.

Matt received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in Exercise and Sports Science and received his Master’s of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University. After serving as Vice President of Operations for one of the country’s largest outpatient rehabilitation corporations, Matt founded Champion Physical Therapy in 2007.

His goal was to provide high quality physical therapy with the most up to date equipment and techniques to his

community Aaron Gray is from Chicago, IL and began working for Champion in Cumming after receiving his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Marquette University. Aaron became the director of the Alpharetta clinic in 2014 and has dedicated himself to helping the people of North Fulton achieve their goals.
