Over 230,000 total votes; more than 100 categories Year after year, Appen Media Group has the great honor of presenting the Best of North Atlanta contest.

We started this annual tradition over ten years ago. I remember being thrilled to have a few hundred people participate in the voting process — to recognize the best businesses within our footprint. For the first time we recognized over 100 categories of business.

Amongst those categories our readers posted a record 230,000 individual votes over 20,000 unique voters.

Wow. Every year we add new categories for our readers to vote on as our coverage area grows. Also, we tweak our recognition process and the gala we host to recognize the honorees. I am always surprised by the enormously excited reception of all those involved — the voters, honorees and staff here at Appen Media. This year was no exception.

Some of the honorees are first time recipients. Some, like Willis Chiropractor, Iroff & Son Jewelers and Dr. Jeffery Jordan have multiple wins to their name. These are all locally owned and operated businesses and that makes me smile. For as quickly as our communities are growing, and the competition for costumers ratchets up – our community still “shops local,” and I think that’s “the best.”

To all the readers who participated in this year’s voting, thank you. We certainly could not do it without you, and we and all of the businesses you voted for appreciate your votes and your businesses.

Appen’s ‘Best of ’ winners grow roots in community

F

or some companies, integrating into the community can play a large role in how they conduct their business.

That’s certainly the case for two local business owners who have carved their own path in their industries and proven themselves as the “best” in their communities.

At the 2017 Best of North Atlanta Awards sponsored by Appen Media Group, two people were honored with two inaugural awards for their work.

Dr. Jeff Jordan of Jordan Orthodontics received the Pillar Award, which recognizes those who have made a strong impact on the North Atlanta business community, striving to exceed expectations and by doing so have become a pillar of the community. The recipient must be a past winner of other individual “Best of” awards.

It made sense to present the first Pillar Award to a person who was the first of his kind in the business community, according to Wendy Goddard, Appen Media’s manager of Marketing and Innovation.

After strategically choosing to root his business in Alpharetta, the original location being right where the heart of Avalon is now, Jordan purchased property off Northpoint Parkway where he built an entire complex to house and support more providers like himself, Goddard said.

“He raised his family here and has provided care for over 20,000 of our local residents and their families, some of them for more than one generation,” Goddard said. “It is a testament to his character that the majority of his staff has been with him for 15-20 years or more. Their loyal team works every day to provide beautiful smiles to every person who enters their office.”

Jordan said he was surprised and humbled by the award.

“It was an amazing feeling for me and my team,” he said. “I just think of myself as Alpharetta’s orthodontist, not a pillar or anything. I’m just thankful to have so many patients and a wonderful staff who have worked with me all this time. It’s been a great ride, 30 years in Alpharetta. With orthodontics, we can change lives.”

The practice has grown up alongside the city, which was a smaller town back when the office opened, Jordan said.

“Each patient’s smile is like a puzzle,” he said. “Each puzzle is different.

They’re all a challenge. But to give someone a beautiful smile is a blessing.

I like the reveal day because it’s great to see the patient go over and look at themselves in the mirror, like what they see and say, ‘I love my new smile.’”

Jordan recently joined the Smile Doctors team which is a group of likeminded orthodontists who are striving to do even better orthodontics.

This year’s One to Watch Award was given to Gloria Mattei of Nothing Bundt Cakes Alpharetta. The award honors a newer business and its owner in the North Atlanta market who is striving for excellence in their place of business and in the marketplace, rooting oneself as a growing leader in the community.

Goddard describes Mattei in one word – hustle.

our area any day of the week in her colorful car bringing sweet smiles to everyone she visits,” Goddard said. “If there is a community event, business expo, women’s luncheon or chamber event happening, she is there.”

Goddard said Mattei embraced the North Atlanta business community whole heartedly and has strived to bring joy to lives every day for the past five years.

“We care about the community and it’s very important for us to be part of the community,” Mattei said. “We are not in the cake business, we are in the joy business. It’s about bringing joy and making everyone’s days special. That’s honestly what I love to do. Any opportunity I see to bring joy, congratulate someone or celebrate, that’s where we like to be.”

After being involved in the corporate world for 15 years, Mattei realized there is nothing more rewarding to her than being involved with her community.

“I never experienced that until I stepped out of the corporate world,” she said. “This was a completely new arena for me. I was known in the corporate world, but not in the community. I had no idea what was happening.”

She soon got involved around town, and word quickly spread about her delicious cakes and upbeat spirit. That mindset connects back to Mattei’s reason for opening her own business in the first place – her son.

“I wanted to provide something for my son who is in the special needs community,” she said. “I thought this would be a good way to prove that these kids can do something in the community. The only way I can do that is by spreading the word and educating. I can bring some happiness to everyone and spread the word, it’s the only way I can teach my son how important it is and that he can be part of society.”

Mattei said she wants to continue being a successful member of her community and keep brightening her neighbors’ days.

Wow! We just celebrated our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to help so many patients “Love your Smile!” My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives!

Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years.

We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last five years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 22,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start.

Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation.

Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. The Original Pancake House: ‘Best Breakfast’ in North Atlanta Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on.

Chances are, there is a stigma about asking for help with those kind of changes. Our culture teaches us we should know how to have a successful relationship. How silly is that? If that were true, most relationships would be successful. Look around you. There’s a lot of conflict in the world.

A close second is homeowners wondering if they should do a certain home improvement project.

People want to know if they should get those coveted new kitchen counters and cabinets, put in the outdoor living space, or refinish the hardwood floors.

As homeowners start to envision putting their home on the market to sell, their perception of the property begins to evolve in their minds as both a home and a financial asset.

Depending on the timing, we often encourage people go ahead and do the projects, particularly if the sale is a few years in the future.

You should enjoy a new kitchen to entertain friends and family, or an outdoor fireplace where you can spend quiet evenings. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure your basic home maintenance items are under control. For example: have the HVAC regularly serviced and replace it if needed, check the age of the water heater, and make sure exterior items such as the roof, siding, window sills and gutters are properly maintained.

While these are not exciting or sexy, good maintenance and good records are very important to buyers. Second, any improvements that you do

should be in keeping with the style of the home.

A brick traditional will not likely sell for top-dollar with an industrial-modern kitchen. Similarly, while you want to be in line with current trends, you do not want to be “trendy.”

Keep your design choices classic and timeless. An experienced real estate agent or designer can be very helpful and guide you in your decisions. We are always happy to come by and consult with you so don’t hesitate to give us a call!

An interview with Dr. Taylor

By Alyssa MacNamera I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success.

As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and Dr. Taylor smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview. After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row.

To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons. Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them.

Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice.

that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care.

And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and boardcertified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.
