hen it comes to weddings, the bride and her gown are often the centerpiece of the day, and Alpharetta’s Elite Pour La Vie bridal boutique makes sure each dress complements the bride and stands out as the perfect piece. “We want to make sure that when you walk down the aisle, you have no regrets,” said Elite Pour La Vie owner Rawan Asad. “You will be the prettiest girl in the room. We want these moments to be memorable.” Whether customers prefer conservative, edgy, sexy or trendy styles, Asad’s boutique carries couture bridal and evening gowns, as well as collections for bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and flower girls. It boasts exclusive pieces from designers and fashion houses throughout the world. “When I came to Atlanta, I wanted to find an

INTERVIEW ▼ INTERVIEW, Continued from Page 5 opportunity to open a business that was not previously available in this area,” Asad said. “It dawned on me that there was nothing in Atlanta that showcased high-end, luxury couture dresses. People would have to fly out to New York, California, sometimes abroad just to find a couture dress. I wanted to make it accessible.” Elite Pour La Vie’s collection of designers include the likes of Berta, Zuhair Murad, Naeem Khan, Elie Saab and Ines Di Santo, and the boutique works to transfer the exclusivity of its dresses to its customers. For example, if a customer from Alpharetta High School buys a prom dress, the boutique will not sell that same dress to anyone else from the school, Asad said. “If you’re a bride, what we offer are exclusive masterpieces from places like Lebanon, Israel, Amsterdam, Italy or Spain, so that you receive an international experience that can’t be found in the Southeast region” she said. “We’re not working with saturated designers. It’s very rare that you’ll find your dress on someone you know.” Elite Pour La Vie also takes the time to provide a one-on-one experience with each bride. To that end, staff see only 10-15 brides a day to avoid rushing customers who might have been dreaming about their perfect dress since childhood. “We provide a white-glove experience,” Asad said. “We cater to our customers’ needs. We are not pushy salespeople. When you come in, we really get to understand you on a personal level. Who is our bride? When is the wedding? What is the venue like? These are important details that we take into consideration when we help you find your perfect wedding dress that will complement who you are as an individual.” Since opening in 2016, Elite Pour La Vie has regularly seen customers from around the world. Most recently, its success has helped Asad launch a second location in Buckhead. The boutique’s name, which is French for “elite for a lifetime,” is emblematic of the staff’s devotion to each customer. Asad said they want to work with customers at all stages of life. “Our relationship doesn’t stop once you take your wedding dress out the door,” Asad said. “We want to always be the dress shop for you. Whether you have a gala or an event, we want to be that shop you go to.” Prices for wedding dresses at Elite Pour La Vie start at $2,000, with most sales averaging about $8,000. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something BLUE! By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer

Classic Blue: The Wedding Color for 2020

8 | northsidewoman.com | march2020

P

lanning a wedding this year? Consider using Classic Blue, Pantone’s Color of the Year. It is the color of the sky at dusk, and evokes feelings of dependability and truth. A lighter tone than navy, Classic Blue adds elegant simplicity to a wedding theme. For a fresh use of Classic Blue, pair it with softer tones of blue, light gray, blush or sage. Let the deeper blue stand alone without the contrast of another bold color. While we are heading into “wedding season,” blue is appropriate for a wedding any time of the year. Mix it with metallics in fall or winter. When coupled with beige, it works well for beach weddings, or pair it with various shades of white for hot summer weddings. You can use Classic Blue in men’s suits, wedding décor, invitations, bridesmaids’ dresses and even in the frosting on the cake. Pinterest is full of blue wedding cakes. Not a fan of blue frosting? Decorate your white cake with fresh or frosted blueberries, or succulents in blue/gray tones. Blue is one of the rarest colors when it comes to flowers. Look for delphiniums that come in beautiful shades of blue year-round. The hybrid version is a long conical shape. They pair well in bouquets with white roses and dusty millers. Blue hydrangeas in various shades are great for centerpieces, because of their volume. Are you “true blue?” The term from the late Middles Ages refers to blue dyes that were applied to woven fabrics in Coventry, England. The color stayed “fast” or “true” and did not fade with washing. Coventry is still known for its famous blue color, yet no one is sure of the exact shade, because the well-guarded recipe was lost long ago. Any archaeological findings would not be a true representation of Coventry Blue, because of age, exposure to light and other factors. Experts know the woad plant (a yellow-flowered plant) is used to make the color, so they have an approximate idea, but it makes a variety of shades in blue. This year, in celebration of the city being named the UK’s City of Culture, Coventry created a Moving Blue color that will be used to paint several buildings and objects. The color is a festive blue that looks like water and sky. Check out images of Coventry’s Blue Ribbon Roundabout, where the iconic metal sculpture in the traffic circle’s center is routinely painted to reflect important events in the area. This year, it is painted Moving Blue. Perhaps Coventry would make a good honeymoon destination? Final note: The website www.theknot.com clarifies the meaning of “something blue.” “While wearing or carrying something blue was meant to deflect that pesky Evil Eye, the color blue stands for love, purity and fidelity — three key qualities for a solid marriage. The traditional ‘something blue’ was often a blue garter worn beneath the bride’s white dress. But you don’t have to wear something blue to ward off wicked spirits. Sprinkle blue clematis into the bouquet, pick out a gorgeous pair of blue pumps, find a powder-blue bow tie or use blue ribbon to tie your invitation suites together — just because.” ■

Look for old Hollywood hairstyles on 2020 brides

HER BEAUTY

By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer

S

tand aside, messy boho braids. For a sleek, polished look on their wedding day, today’s brides are choosing a vintage hairstyle that starlets donned in the 1940s and 1950s. Nothing compares to glamorous old Hollywood waves for setting the stage for an elegant wedding. Set waves create a long continuous line, frame the face and bring the focus to the eyes and lips. A straight side part is a critical element to the look. Long hair gives the opportunity for more waves, but chin-length hair can also achieve this look with finger waves. For inspiration, search for images of Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake or even the cartoon character Jessica Rabbit. Modern starlets also use this hairstyle on the red carpet. It is perfect for showcasing sparkling earrings or necklaces, because the hair is usually swept to one side. Sometimes, it is called the peekaboo hairstyle. To create this vintage-inspired glitzy ’do, two methods are available. The choice depends on hair type, and how long the style needs to last. For thick hair, the pin curl option is preferred. This method works best for hair that doesn’t need to be washed every day. It lasts longer than the hot styling tool method. For pin curls, start with wet hair, creating a side part and then sectioning the hair in one-and-a-half inch areas. Wrap each section around your finger, and then pin with a bobby pin. Continue until all the hair is pinned in curls. You can stay away from the crown of the head if you want curls to start around the cheekbones. Spray liberally with hairspray. Let hair dry overnight, or at least eight hours. Then, unpin the hair and begin brushing the curls into the precise waves you desire. It will take several minutes of brushing to achieve this retro look. Apply finishing serum for a smooth look. This method is surprisingly durable and can last up to seven days. For thinner or layered hair, old Hollywood waves can be achieved with hot styling tools. The hairstyle doesn’t last as long, but it is quicker to achieve. Wash and dry hair, apply a heat-protecting serum, and curl the hair in sections starting at the ears. Create ringlets around the head, going in the same direction. Back comb the curls to create volume, but be careful to not completely comb out the curl. Use pins to keep the waves arranged around the face until the event begins. Spray liberally with hairspray. Your retro waves created with this method should last a few hours. Finger curls can be used on shorter hair to achieve the glitzy retroHollywood look from the 1920s. Apply a liberal amount of setting gel to clean wet hair. Create a side part with a fine-tooth comb. Finger curls are created by combing the hair close to the head and creating ridges with the length of the index finger and middle finger by pinching the waves between them. Women did this style to soften the blunt-cut bob of the 20s. It’s a great way to add variety to a short hairstyle. It looks glamorous and puts the focus on eyes and lips. Speaking of eyes and lips, 2020 brides have the option of using a bold lip color to complement the Hollywood look, or emphasize the eyes by applying a glossy nude lip color. Eye shadow is minimal, but liquid eyeliner on the upper lids and mascara or false lashes are a must. Eyebrows frame the face, so make sure they are well-shaped and filled in. ■ As a personal wardrobe consultant and owner of Alpharetta based Fashion With Flair, Lori Wynne helps people look their best. HER MONEY

Wedding gifts for the newlyweds By ALLISON BAINES Contributing Writer

I

t’s March, and you know what that means: wedding season is in full swing. Other than choosing what to wear, the next big decision to make is what to give the happy couple. Here are a few gift ideas that will be a hit and ensure your gift will be remembered forever: •

A bottle of Dom Perignon: Okay, let’s admit, this is one of the more expensive pieces on the list. But if you can afford it, this prestige Champagne is destined to be a gift that will always be remembered. The newlyweds will wait until a special occasion to sip on this bubbly, and they are sure to think of you when they do. • Picture frame: Nordstrom.com has quality silver picture frames that are nicer than your average frame, but also not out-of-thequestion pricing. I received one of these as a wedding present and made sure to put one of my favorite wedding pictures in it to display in my living room. I am sure this frame will last forever if cared for properly, and I will always remember the sweet couple that gifted it to us. • Matching passport holders: Send them off to their honeymoon in the right way. This can either be expensive or inexpensive, depending on where you buy. I recommend Etsy for all things personalized, and they are sure to have a wide range of pricing options. • Night out: This is probably my favorite. Everyone thinks about gifts for the house and honeymoon, but what about after the festivities are over? Get the couple a gift card or Groupon, so they can have a date night once life settles down and they need a break. Wedding gifts don’t have to break your bank, and a meaningful gift doesn’t always have to be expensive. Happy wedding season! ■

ASK THE VET

Say ‘I do’ to animals in weddings By DR. JOANNE ROESNER Loving Hands Animal Clinic www.lovinghands.com

W

eddings are a huge life event, typically shared with important loved ones. For some of us, this means our animal as well as human family. In 1995, when I said “I do,” our wedding party included my Yorkshire Terrier, Meme, also known as "Small Dog,". She was definitely as precious to me as human loved ones, and she was an integral part of our family when I joined my life with Thomas Denham. I look at those pictures today with the warmth and fondness of any wedding album, but add a little extra for the memory of sharing the day with a funny, domineering and loving dog daughter. In my case, I carried Meme instead of flowers during the ceremony.

This was manageable, because she was about the same size as a floral bouquet; but it would not work for my beloved Harvey, a Golden Retriever. Still, larger pets can play the role of best dog or dog of honor. They can be attired in flowered leashes and formed ties, or can even be fully clothed. Flower dogs and ring bearer dogs are other roles your pet can play in the wedding party. Some weddings have even utilized rescue puppies as the bouquet carried by bridesmaids, with the idea of helping the puppies get adopted and promoting donations to the rescue group involved. Dogs are not the only animals that can attend weddings. Some couples have included horses, alpacas, llamas and more exotic animals in their ceremonies. A wedding venue in Thailand has an elephant dressed in white that can be part of your nuptials. For those who utilize a venue that prohibits animal participants, you can still incorporate your animal family in the celebration. A save the date card with pets wearing a sign saying, “I knew him/her first” is an endearing way to let folks know the value you place on them in your newly forming family. Photos of your animal family members can also be incorporated into place cards and wedding invitations. To honor a cherished deceased animal, consider adding animalrelated charities as a part of your wedding gift registry. With proper planning, animal family can become part of the engagement process and photos, even if they cannot be in the actual wedding. The ability to include the entire family in this joyous event is only limited by our imagination and creativity. ■ march2020 | northsidewoman.com | 13

Family-run formal shop makes magic for brides

By CARSON COOK

or many brides, planning a wedding will be one of the most emotionally turbulent times of their lives. Joy, stress, anticipation and nerves battle together, often leaving brides-to-be feeling overwhelmed. Having family close by as they plan their special day can be both a blessing and a curse, as every individual brings their own opinions to the table. Few people understand this challenge better than Vickie Williams and her daughters Lauren, Bonnie and Hayley, owners of Treasures Formals and Bridal in Alpharetta.

Not only do they have decades of experience helping brides and wedding parties pick out formalwear, but they are also experts in working closely with family. “When you work with your family, you have to communicate,” Vickie said. “We’ve been doing this for 17 years, and still every day, we discuss communication.” When brides step in front of the store’s extra-large mirror for the first time, many may only see their flaws, Vickie said. They may feel overwhelmed by emotions, conflicted by their family’s opinions, or determined to find the dress they loved online. The Williams know their job is to help clients relax and keep an open mind until they find “the one.” Vickie said she and her

daughters work hard for that moment of realization when brides find their perfect dress. “Whether you’re a man or a woman, this job requires a kind of sensitivity,” she said. “You become the person who can see the signs. When someone walks in — whether they leave with a dress or not — they leave feeling better.” The team of mother and daughters made the leap from formalwear enthusiasts to small business owners in 2003. “When my daughters were teenagers, they worked in a formalwear store, and they loved it,” Vickie said. “They wanted to start their own store.” Despite long retail hours and demanding clientele, it was clear Lauren and Bonnie had a passion for formalwear. It wasn’t until they tragically lost their father in a car crash in 2003 that the daughters’ vision of running their own store became more than just a dream. “Our parents had always been entrepreneurial-minded, and we had talked with them about one day opening our own business,” Lauren recalled. “After my father [died], God made it very clear that it was time to pursue opening our own store. Leaving a legacy was very important.” Bonnie and Lauren brought sister Hayley and mother Vickie along for the ride. Since then, they have helped countless brides make their dreams come true. “We love helping people,” Vickie said. “We help them find the dress they’re going to wear on the most important day of their life. It’s our job to make people feel comfortable and confident.” After years at their shop on North Point Parkway, near the mall, the Williams will be starting a new phase when Treasures Formals and Bridal moved to 92 Milton Avenue in downtown Alpharetta last month. “We’re really excited to show our customers all of the details we have been working on,” Vickie said. Their new location has a boutique feel, with an open layout, so clients can feed off the positive energy from other brides and families, Vickie said. They have reconfigured their mirror and dressing room set-up to make things easier for guests with mobility issues. The new store is also connected to a parking garage, so transporting gowns in the rain is no longer a problem. Beyond the details inside the store, the Williams said they love being in downtown Alpharetta. Rather than driving to a strip center near the mall, they said brides, their friends and families can make a day of exploring downtown Alpharetta. Without getting in a car, they said shoppers can find their wedding dress, grab lunch, pick invitations, work on their registry, be fitted for luxury lingerie, look for honeymoon outfits and wind down with drinks. “We’re excited to be down there with our friends,” Vickie said, listing the owners of Anna Bella Fine Lingerie, The Red Hound Gifts and All Inspired Boutique. “They’re all so welcoming, and they know the value of supporting each other.” ■

GOOD BOOKS

“Feels Like Falling,” Kristy Woodson Harvey Harvey’s sixth summer novel, “Feels Like Falling,” coming April 28, is an “optimistic tale that just might convince readers that bouncing back can actually land a person in a better place than where they started,” according to Publisher’s Weekly. Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through the vastly different lenses of protagonists Gray and Diana. On the surface, the two women couldn’t seem more different. But they will soon learn that sometimes, when you’re plunging headfirst with the brakes worn out and the engine shot, it might feel like you’re falling just when you’re actually learning to fly. Harvey lives with her husband and son in Beaufort, North Carolina, on a stretch of coastline that closely resembles her fictional Cape Carolina. For more information, go to kristywoodsonharvey.com. “Unmasking the Shadow Man,” Debbie Herbert Herbert is a USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Washington Post bestselling author who writes both romance and psychological suspense. Married and living in Alabama, she has an adult son with autism, and characters with autism frequently land in

her stories — even when she doesn’t plan on it. “Unmasking the Shadow Man,” published by Harlequin in October 2019, is Herbert’s latest romance and features a woman returning to the childhood home where she witnessed her sister’s accidental death. Or was it accidental? Mysterious goings-on occur, and she turns to a local police officer who helps her solve long-buried crimes. Together, they try to identify a killer while being stalked by danger at every turn. For more details and a free story, go to debbieherbert.com. “Blame it on the Billionaire,” by Naima Simone Simone, a bestselling author from Birmingham, Alabama, published the third book in her Billionaire Blackout series from Harlequin Desire in February. After a blackout plunges the city of Chicago into darkness, the unlikeliest of lovers share a night filled with secrets, lies and soulstealing passion. Soon, the blackout that turned lowly executive assistant Nadia Jordan and start-up billionaire Grayson Chandler into insatiable lovers leads to a proposal Nadia can’t refuse. As she steps into Grayson’s privileged Chicago world, Nadia must deal with Grayson’s matchmaking mother, a vengeful ex

and her own fake fiancé before dreams become reality. The Johns Creek resident is a USA Today bestselling author of 13 published novels. Solheim’s latest release concerns the country’s top cyber asset, who is suddenly reunited with the woman who ghosted him at their senior prom. The two find themselves embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with the enemy — and each other. Soon, the agent is risking his job, national security and his life for a woman he swore to never trust again. Making interior spaces functional, safe and beautiful PAGES 18 - 23

Create the perfect work environment in your home office By TRACY HARKNESS Contributing Writer

W

ith more people working from home than ever before, several of my clients have been asking for help in designing a home office space that is not only functional, but stylish too. It is important to have a work environment that inspires you and allows you to get down to business. Creating a space that feels more like home than a traditional office is the goal. If you’re looking to spend more of your work time “in-house,” these tips could help you feel right at home in your home office. • Desk — Instead of a typical office desk, consider a dining table or a smaller bar table. Don’t limit your space to rectangular shapes either. A round dining table could work just as well and add interest to your space. • Desk chair — Investing in a good quality desk chair is key. Whether you choose a traditional leather desk chair or incorporate a custom dining chair, there are plenty of options that will look stylish, provide comfort and also be extremely functional. I love a chair with a custom fabric that gives

character to the space. Paint — Be bold! This is one place where paint can be a decorative element. Painting the walls and trim the same color is a sophisticated look that always takes a room to the next level. A dark, moody space is chic and adds a little drama for an office, which I love. Lighting — Work hours can often extend well after the sun sets. Add an overhead light that provides enough task lighting for the space but is also aesthetically pleasing. A floor or table lamp placed in the room will also provide nice task lighting. Remember, lighting is the jewelry of any space. Make it personal — Hang framed family pictures and travel photos to reflect you and your style. Awards and recognitions can also be custom framed to create a gallery wall in your space. ■

Design Interiors N

orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the lifestyles of today.

The heart of the home…

W

here does your family gather? Where do your friends congregate when you have a dinner party? Where do you spend most of your time cooking, eating, entertaining or relaxing? The kitchen has long been “the heart of the home”. Well, our hearts have grown. With all the open concept floor plans of today’s homes, it is without a doubt the hub. Design trends are focused on this space more than ever. Large kitchen islands demand attention. I suggest using color on them to make a statement. Navy blue and rich warm grey are two of my favorites. Include barstools that are interesting and inviting. Marble, herringbone tile, or eye-catching geometric patterns can be used on backsplashes creating a bold backdrop for a grand hood vent. Use wood to warm things up. Whether it’s rustic wood beams, distressed wood floors or an accent piece of furniture. It’s important to keep it simple and let all these elements speak for themselves. Don’t over complicate things by cluttering up your space. The kitchen is the star of the show but it should “go with the flow”. The fluidity between the living space and the kitchen need to be uniform in style. Comfortable conversation arrangements that offer family and friends a place to gather are equally important. One of my favorite arrangements is placing two sofas facing each other with two swivel chairs at their ends that will allow the conversation to switch from the living room to the kitchen island. There are endless design options available. It can be overwhelming. Let me help you define your style and create a space you can be proud of. ■

Your Destination. Your Pace.

Take the stress out of traveling with a seamless, curated vacation made just for you. Call us today and start planning your dream getaway.

Your tempo and passions are unique. Go on a honeymoon that fits. Whether its wanderlust or relaxation, we’ll help tailor an experience that matches your style.

k3travel.com | 404-457-8032

What’s your honeymoon recipe? Y ou can personalize just about everything in your wedding. And why wouldn’t you? Yes, everyone wants “a honeymoon,” but you want YOUR honeymoon. Everyone wants to savor those moments of peace after their whirlwind event, but not everyone wants to go on the same adventure you have your heart set on. Honeymoon planning on top of wedding planning is like trying to enjoy a French silk pie after three giant slices of wedding cake. If you can’t kick back and enjoy yourself on your wedding day (thanks to more agendas and timetables a day later), when exactly will you relax? The simple solution—so simple that you wonder why it hasn’t been this way all along— is in a change of schedule.

THIS IS WHAT 80% OF NEWLYWEDS DID LAST YEAR Who says you have to take your honeymoon right after your wedding? It’s not today’s brides and grooms saying it, that’s for sure. In 2019, only 20% of newlyweds reported leaving for their honeymoons within three days of their weddings. The rest waited a week, or two, or more. There were many common reasons: • Many newlyweds didn’t have the budget to take a trip right after their weddings • Rainy season or less-than-beachable weather at destinations also gave couples pause • And, with so many family members in town, many couples wanted to spend more time visiting with loved ones Another example was here at K3 Travel when one couple scheduled a later departure for their honeymoon because the specific, luxurious and totally unforgettable suite they wanted at their destination wasn’t available the week after the big day. Verdict: wait, because this suite was worth it.

YOU CAN STILL ESCAPE: JUST TAKE A MINIMOON You still need to get out of town for at least a weekend after all the fanfare! Decompressing and spending time with your partner after the wedding is essential. The solution? Take a minimoon—a quick weekend away some place with a spa and great food—to bide your time before the official honeymoon departure date. A wedding gives you more than your fair share of planning and timetables to keep. Your honeymoon shouldn’t be another stress on top of it.

EXAMPLES OF MINIMOONS K3 Travel has several locations close to Atlanta that we recommend where clients can decompress with unforgettable minimoons. Contact us to take your pick of B & Bs, spas, hiking destinations and classy inns and chateaus to get away for that bite-sized escape between your wedding and your perfect honeymoon!

TABLE & MAIN - osteria mattone Canton St., Roswell, GA 30075

S

ituated on Roswell’s Canton Street, two gems of the R-O Hospitality Group of restaurants, Table & Main and Osteria Mattone, are serving up mouth-watering entrees. With a variety of dining options, between the two of them, it is easy to spend the whole day in Roswell. Located at 1028 Canton St., Table & Main is housed in a charming restored cottage and serves up a Southern-style cuisine. The Pernice brothers, Daniel and Ryan, have taken a great deal of care to create a beautiful space, and present high-quality food that is simple, yet rich with an amazing combination of flavors. Northside Woman started our day in Roswell, excited to sample some of Table & Main’s delicious brunch menu items. From the coffee cake starter to the chicken and waffles, the entire meal was hearty and flavorful. The sour cream coffee cake with a brown sugar pecan filling and pecan crumble was a perfect beginning and a great item to share. Next, we sampled the Farmer’s Breakfast, which consisted of two eggs, sorghum bacon, buttered grits, a cathead biscuit and seasonal jam. We followed that with the Chicken and Waffles, Southern-fried Springer Mountain Farms chicken atop a cornmeal waffle and drizzled with hot honey. We were also able to sample the Catfish Benedict — two poached eggs, fried catfish cake with Benton’s country ham and topped with a remoulade hollandaise. All items were delicious. Our server Sarah and the sous chef Jess were eager to make sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely return for dinner and to check out the beautiful patio. Our next stop was Table & Main’s sister restaurant Osteria Mattone, known as the "Rome in Roswell". Located just up the street at 1095 Canton St., Osteria serves up regional Italian cuisine and combines the casual ambiance of a osteria with the more formal dining of a trattoria. Upon arrival, we noticed the beautiful outdoor patio and restored home with large windows that give the restaurant amazing natural light throughout. Owner Ryan Pernice was there to greet us and was happy to provide a brief history of the restaurant. He recommended we try some favorite menu items. To begin, we sampled the cinnamon rolls, served warm with a cream cheese glaze and pumpkin seed crumble. Next, we had the Lobster and Crab Omelet, the Roasted Pork Shoulder served with two eggs and a crispy potato cake and their top seller pasta dish, Agnolotti Di Oxo. The flavors in all dishes were amazing, but my favorite was the pork shoulder. That item was just “stupid good!” If that wasn’t enough, Pernice was eager for us to try the famous Budino Caramellato, a salted caramel bread pudding, and the Torta Di Cioccolato, a flourless chocolate cake with whipped cream and Luxardo cherries. All the menu items were beautifully presented and full of flavors. The service was also outstanding. We just loved the Southern charm of both old converted houses, and plan to return to these restaurants in the near future to indulge in their unique food and environments for dinner. Additionally, both locations offer private dining and can accommodate events. At Osteria Mattone, guests can reserve the beautiful wine room for private occasions. Both restaurants offer event space for bridal luncheons, business dinners, baby showers, birthday celebrations, graduation ceremonies and other special occasions. Space is available for up to 50 people in some of the areas, with more room outside on the patio. ■ — Suzanne Pacey, Publisher 26 | northsidewoman.com | march2020

SHE's SEXY

For the love of lingerie

By ELAINE WILCO Contributing Writer

A

lingerie shower for the bride — what a fun idea! Yet many women approach the idea of wearing lingerie with mixed feelings at best. Women are uncomfortable in sexy lingerie for a variety of reasons. • They may feel unattractive or uncomfortable in lingerie that others choose for them, whether it’s chosen by friends or their partner. The clothes don’t fit right, or don’t emphasize the parts of their body that they think are most attractive. • They may feel fake, because the lingerie doesn’t suit their own self-image. • They may feel “objectified.” When a partner expresses an interest in seeing them dressed in lingerie, they may think their partner isn’t really interested in them. This last point is especially unfortunate. Your partner wants to see you looking sexy in lingerie, not just any woman. Besides, there’s no need to feel objectified if you embrace lingerie as a part of being an enthusiastic sexual partner. In order to make lingerie a positive element in your sex life, you might need to do a little bit of real-life research. Start by trying on quality lingerie in different styles. The options are many. A silky teddy, a slinky long gown slit up the thigh, something filmy, floaty and sheer or a tight-fitting bustier with thigh-high stockings are just a few of the choices. Make sure the items fit well and feel comfortable. Look in the mirror — do you like what you see? Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel sexy. Think of wearing lingerie as a grown-up game of dress-up, where you get to express your hidden sex goddess, or pretend to be someone completely different than your everyday self. Whether or not lingerie is part of the wedding night or the honeymoon, it’s a great way to introduce a bit of variety into your sexual relationship. ■

olletta Italian Food and Wine has been serving up an energetic dining experience in Alpharetta’s Avalon development since 2015. Known for its superb service, the restaurant’s Italian cuisine provides for an outstanding meal, season after season and year after year. Executive chef Jonathan St. Hilaire recently updated his menu for 2020, and Northside Woman was invited to sample his offerings. For our first round, we were served two antipasti — the burrata and the meatballs. The burrata, a mixture of the freshest fresh mozzarella I have ever had, was served with roasted butternut squash, herbs, balsamico, fennel, farro and toasted ciabatta. The meatballs were a combination of beef, veal and pork, served atop polenta mash and finished with San Marzano tomatoes, basil and parmesan. Both starters were delicious, but I have to say the burrata was absolutely fantastic. The combination of flavors and the fresh mozzarella was outstanding. Next, we sampled one of Colletta’s unique pasta dishes, the Black Truffle Agnolotti. The pasta was filled with homemade fontina and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms and finished with parmesan brodo and a truffle butter. The dish

28 | northsidewoman.com | march2020

was so rich, creamy and flavorful that I’m glad we decided to share it. I was already running out of room, and we had two more courses to go. For our main course, Lamont Rooker, the general manager, recommended the Wood Grilled Veal Chop and the Roasted Halibut. The veal chop was served with butternut squash, Brussels sprouts and a cranberry mustard compote that really enhanced the flavor of the tender veal. The halibut was served with chickpeas, roasted cauliflower and lemon herb vinaigrette, topped with a caper butter. Both were mouthwatering and cooked to perfection. The variety of flavors in each were delicious and really showcased St. Hilaire’s talents. While we were already very full after our entrees, we couldn’t resist sampling a trio of desserts — the cinnamon sugar Bomboloni doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce, Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake and The Sinatra, a vanilla bean gelato with white truffle honey and pane fritto. All three were scrumptious, but I think the Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake may well be addicting. From start to finish, our experience at the restaurant was outstanding. Dana, our server, was confident in her knowledge of the food, communicated effectively and took great take care of us. If you’re looking to sample the sublime tastes of Northern Italy or simply want a superb steak, I recommend you check out Colletta for lunch or dinner. ■ — Suzanne Pacey, Publisher

HER CAREER

Choose the voice you use By KATE TUNISON Contributing Writer

Y

our voice is a big part of your overall presence. We talk a lot about body language, however in terms of message credibility, about 30 to 35 percent of how you are perceived centers around your voice. Here are some areas to consider as we move toward engaging and building trust with our audiences. Breathe — Most females’ voices are naturally more higher-pitched than their male colleagues. Ever heard the term “shrill woman” attached to a compliment? We want to avoid that characterization, because high-pitched, or shrill voices, are quickly turned off by audiences. If they’re turned off, your ideas won’t be heard or communicated. The way to remedy this is to breathe deeply from your diaphragm and to pace yourself. Talking too fast doesn’t allow for natural breathing, and your voice pitch becomes higher and more shrill. Watch some of the female presidential candidates, former and current, and you will notice as their pace slows, their voices become more modulated. This makes their message easier for the audience to listen to and process. Pause, pace and pitch make a difference. Eliminate Valley Girl speak — A few decades ago, many females started communicating using a question mark instead of a period at the end of a statement. An example is: “I’ve decided to ask for a raise?” instead of making the declarative statement of, “I’ve decided to ask for a raise.”

When you end with a question mark, your pitch is higher and your voice goes up. This makes you sound unsure and suggests you lack confidence. When making a declarative statement, your pitch goes down — you sound more grounded and like someone to be taken more seriously. Keep the volume up — Have you ever noticed how some people’s voices start trailing off at the end of their sentences, making it difficult to hear what they are saying? Starting strong and then ending weak toward the end of your message sends a clear signal to your audience that what you are saying isn’t important and you are ready to quickly end your talk. Keep the volume up and keep your pace consistent, so your audience does not have to strain to hear you. If they must strain or make extra efforts to understand, they will turn you off and go to more pressing matters, like checking their iPhones or chatting with their neighbor. Use voice inflections and intonations to engage and add interest to your voice. Pace yourself, pause appropriately and be aware of your pitch. Your audience will trust you and your message. ■

B Roswell nonprofit brings birthday joy to families without means 34 | northsidewoman.com | march2020

irthdays are one of the most exciting and memorable parts of childhood, but some families are not always able to provide a special celebration when times are tough. Now, one local nonprofit chapter is looking to change that reality by making sure all children get to celebrate their special day. Founded by Nicole Moll in Sun Prairie, Wis., the nonprofit Box of Balloons has been providing birthday parties since 2013 for children of families in need to bring a sense of joy and hope, if only for a day. In August 2019, Jessica Graham brought that vision to Georgia when she launched the state’s first Box of Balloons chapter in Roswell. “My family's search for a way to teach our girls the value of giving back and serving others led us on an Internet journey, where we found Box of Balloons,” Graham said. “What better way for a child to experience and learn about extending kindness to others, than in a way they can relate: the excitement of a birthday.” Box of Balloons now has 42 chapters in 26 states. Graham’s Roswell chapter works with local community organizations and social workers to find families in need. After recipients are identified, Box of Balloons volunteers gather supplies to help the parent or caregiver host a customized birthday celebration. The organization does not connect with the parents or caregivers directly, but rather the social workers or community organizations, so the families can take the primary role in throwing the party.

“One of our organization core values is to empower the parents and caregivers and helping them feel the pride and confidence in being their child's hero,” Graham said. “They are the ones giving their child a fun and memorable birthday party.” Although the organization recognizes and supports basic needs being met first, Graham said a party can also help fill a need for hope. “It's much more than cake and gifts, as it expresses so many things to the family as a whole,” she said. “A birthday tells the child they are loved, they are valued and that they matter. It helps a parent feel pride and confidence, that they were able to ‘do’ and supply joy and happiness for their child. A birthday is a day of love, hope and looking to the future.” Since its inception, the Roswell Box of Balloons chapter has helped 72 children celebrate their birthdays. Nationwide, the organization has helped more than 3,000 children. The organization focuses on children ages 12 and younger. Each birthday kit includes storebought or handmade treats such as cupcakes or doughnuts, candles, a gift, balloons, a party game, party favors and decorations. Keeping in line with Graham’s own search, there are no age restrictions for volunteers with Box of Balloons. She said it’s a great way to impart values, like serving others and helping those in need, to children at a young age. The Roswell chapter hosts several fundraising and supply drives throughout the year. Some upcoming events include fundraisers at Gate City Brewing Company, starting at 5 p.m. March 9, April 20 and May 11. The brewing company will donate $1 per pint sold to the

Benefits of the well woman exam

By DR. CHRISTY KENKEL

I

t’s that time again, time for the well woman exam. The anticipation of this event may not always make our hearts flutter with glee, but this doctor’s visit can be one of the most important days of the year. In truth, well woman exams are vital to our health because they help detect problems that can become larger, perhaps dangerous burdens if they go unchecked. A well woman exam, at its least, helps us maintain healthy, vibrant lives, and at its most, can be life-saving. A well woman exam generally consists of pelvic and clinical breast exams in addition to discussing lifestyle habits, safe sexual practices, contraception options, and recommended screening exams and vaccinations that vary based on age, lifestyle habits, and genetic risk factors. Here, I’ll touch on the recommended screening exams you may encounter at your well woman exam. For sexually active women under the age of 25, yearly STI testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis is recommended. This protects future fertility, protects against ectopic pregnancy, and prevents the spread of dangerous diseases. Testing in ages over 25 is certainly recommended if there are symptoms of infection or high-risk sexual practices. Between the ages of 21-65 (with some exceptions after 65), regular pap smears are recommended. Roughly 80 percent of women have been exposed to high risk HPV by the age of 50. Importantly, virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the high risk HPV. Pap smears check for the presence of high risk HPV, and to see if cervical cells exhibit abnormalities caused by this virus. If there are advanced cervical cell abnormalities, outpatient procedures can be performed to remove the portion of affected tissue at risk for morphing into cancer. Without first having a pap smear, these cell changes would be missed, and a patient could be at risk for cervical cancer, a deadly disease. The HPV vaccines are strongly recommended in hopes of alleviating the burden this virus creates. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and is either the most common or second most common cause of death from cancer among women of most races. Screening recommendations vary based on which guidelines are followed. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends yearly clinical breast exams and mammograms between the ages of 40-74. The frequency of screening tests can be increased depending on a patient’s risk factors. Referrals for mammograms and breast imaging can be made at the annual well woman exam. Even if we as patients feel anxious or burdened by the idea of visiting the gynecologist for our well woman exam, let us remember that ultimately it enables us to enjoy vibrant lives by keeping our bodies safe. As gynecologists, it is our commitment to help you achieve that. ■

Addicted Skin – Does your skin have a habit? By DR. BRENT TAYLOR

Premier Dermatology and MOHS surgery of Atlanta

M

any people assume that medications that do not require a prescription are relatively harmless. Over the Counter (OTC) medications include drugs like acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen, aspirin, and, in dermatology, hydrocortisone. Given the current opioid epidemic, almost everyone is aware of the dangers of abusing prescription drugs, but I have found that a fair number DR. TAYLOR of my patients have caused themselves harm with some very common OTC medications. Medications like Tylenol have a lower therapeutic window meaning that the toxic dose is not much higher than the recommended daily dose. A toxic does of Tylenol causes liver failure. Other medications like aspirin can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding when taken in abundance. In dermatology, the over the counter medication with which patients often have the most problems is hydrocortisone. It is present in numerous medications including Cortizone-10® and some types of Preparation H® as well as eczema and itch-relief creams. Hydrocortisone is a topical steroid. Steroids are wonder drugs in medicine. Before steroids were available, many diseases were a death sentence or at least a sentence to a life of pain and disability. Steroids suppress the immune system broadly. They have the ability to treat patients with diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Steroids are also “dirty drugs” in the sense that they carry a host of side effects ranging from increased risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetes to osteoporosis, trouble sleeping, anger issues and the list goes on. Nowadays, medications with fewer side effects are available, but steroids remain indispensable in many circumstances. When used on the skin, topical steroids are also a mixed blessing. They are amazing at helping with poison ivy and are still the go-to medication for most cases of eczema and many non-specific itchy rashes. However, topical steroids used chronically will thin the skin, cause easy bruising, stretch marks and fragile skin. And even a few days of applying topical steroids to the face can sometimes lead to “addicted skin,” that breaks out in acne-like lesions or rashes whenever someone stops using the topical steroid. If someone unwittingly uses hydrocortisone on the face, he or she may develop a case of perioral dermatitis or steroid acne that can take weeks or months of oral antibiotics and other topical 40 | northsidewoman.com | march2020

medications to quiet down and control. Another pitfall of topical steroids like hydrocortisone is their potential to make infections worse. Because steroids suppress the immune system, conditions of inappropriate immune activation like eczema and poison ivy rashes get better with steroids. Unfortunately, infections can get worse because we rely on an intact immune system to fight bacteria, yeast and viruses. If that rash you thought was eczema turns out to be fungus, then putting a steroid on it can allow the fungus to grow. Certain medicated lip balms contain hydrocortisone and cause viral outbreaks. Again, topical steroids suppress the immune system. So, if someone has ever had the “cold sore” virus HSV-1 (which between half and two thirds of the population has), then applying a topical steroid can allow the virus to reactivate and cause more frequent and worse cold sore outbreaks. Likewise, I have seen many cases recently of parents putting hydrocortisone on their children’s eczema in the setting of a molluscum infection, and the molluscum has spread and become very severe. A final important note: topical steroids generally do not cure anything – they merely control certain diseases. Whenever possible, it is important to identify the underlying cause of the disease so that it can be addressed. As a vein specialist and dermatologist, I have many patients who thought they simply had “eczema” on their legs when in fact they had “stasis dermatitis” due to underlying vein disease. Curing vein disease not only often eliminates lower leg eczema but also often cures symptoms of leg pain, heaviness, night cramps, restless legs and other lower extremity complaints. If you or a loved one has a skin ailment, particularly a concern for skin cancer or vein disease, consider making an appointment with Dr. Brent Taylor of Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. Dr. Taylor is a board-certified dermatologist, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, and is certified by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. We look forward to taking care of you.■

FILLING THE GAPS: Veneers, implants and dental bonding By DR. DAVID REMALEY

R

epairing broken, damaged teeth is at the heart of modern dentistry, allowing millions of people to have the smiles they want. Damaged teeth can be incredibly detrimental to our self-image. Teeth that are stained or starting to yellow work to prematurely age us and create an overall less attractive appearance. Repairing damaged teeth is typically done using three methods all offered by Roswell Dental Care— porcelain veneers, dental implants, and dental bonding—all of which help restore and brighten smiles. How Veneers Are Done We utilize the most updated technology available, one of which only 20% of the dental practices have upgraded to this technology. A computerized digital scan of the patient’s teeth is first made which helps create porcelain veneers customized to each patient. No more gooey, messy impressions! Temporary veneers are used between treatments. After the temps are removed the custom veneers are bonded to teeth’s surface for immediate, visible improvement. Veneer Candidates Patients with moderate to severe yellowing or stains across the surface of the teeth are great candidates because they repair and strengthen the surface. Veneers also can repair teeth that are crooked or fixing large gaps between teeth. Dental Implants Teeth with extensive damage may need more than just surface treatment. Some teeth may be so damaged as to need replacement, which is where DENTAL IMPLANTS come in. Dental implants help repair teeth that are damaged and restore functionality for a beautiful, naturally healthy smile. Dental Bonding Similar to veneers, DENTAL BONDING uses a process that targets the surface of the teeth to create a bright, beautiful smile again. Dental bonding is a quick process with minimal downtime. After choosing the correct shade for your teeth, the surfaces of the teeth are lightly etched and brushed with a bonding liquid that keeps the resin adhered to teeth. This resin is sculpted, molded, and hardened with a special light. Interested in Learning More?
