Milton receives clean audit report for ’24 fiscal year By SARAH COYNE sarah@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — The City of Milton was presented a clean fill of financial health in its most recent audit disclosed at the April 28 City Council meeting. Lead auditor and CPA Will Derzis presented the findings covering the 2024 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, 2024. At the end of the year, the city saw a combined ending fund balance of roughly $92 million, a decrease of approximately $2.8 million from the prior year. The city recorded assets of approximately $269.8 million offset by liabilities of approximately $94.4 million, resulting in a net position

Burglars open safe, damage cars at home

MILTON, Ga. — Police responded to a terroristic threat and criminal trespass call April 26 at Bobby G’s Chicago Eatery and Sports Bar on Ga. 9. Police arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. and spoke with a man who claimed that a bar patron had become a nuisance to staff and guests. The patron refused to vacate the premises after the man told him to leave. Police were told that the disorderly man threatened the other with deadly violence. Through an online resource, police were able to trace down the patron’s vehicle information, as well as neighborhood. Police were able to contact the patron’s nephew, who stated he was unwilling to help in the investigation.

MILTON, Ga. — Police responded to a burglary at a home off Taylor Road. The girlfriend of the homeowner told police that she returned to the house around 9 p.m., to find it had been burglarized. Police found a large safe that had been dragged across the floor, opened and emptied. Inside the garage, police found bullet casings on the stairs leading up to the driveway. Among the vehicles, a gold Mercedes-Benz G-Class Wagon sustained multiple bullet holes. A black Rolls Royce had a single bullet hole. Police found a hammer lying in a bush near a window in the rear of the residence. As police continued to survey the scene, a black Glock handgun with the slide locked back was found in a Yukon Denali parked at the residence. A detective arrived shortly after.

Man returns from trip to find SUV damaged

Vehicle reported stolen from woman’s driveway

MILTON, Ga. — A man called police around 6:30 p.m. April 21 after discovering that his SUV had been egged. The man stated that he had been away on a trip from April 16 to 21, and was unable to give any information on who could have done it. Residents in the Deerfield Point neighborhood were unable to give any insight to police or the car owner as to what happened. Police found no permanent damage to the vehicle but issued a

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A 37-year -old Alpharetta woman reported her car stolen April 17 after she found the vehicle missing from her driveway. The woman said a friend drove her to her Wanderer Lane home about 8 p.m. April 15, and she realized her gray Honda Civic was gone the morning of April 16, according to an Alpharetta police report. A stroller, child’s car seat and jacket were inside. The items were valued at $2,050. Officers saw no sign of forced

entry. The woman said she was the only person with a key, which was in her possession. The woman said she was borrowing the car from the registered owner, a 60-year -old Roswell man. She added he had never said he planned to take the vehicle back. Officers attempted to call the man but were unsuccessful. A Flock Safety camera system registered no hits for the vehicle. The incident was classified as a felony theft by taking greater than $1,500. — Jon Wilcox

Man reports home burglary after noticing card charges ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A 50-year -old Alpharetta man reported items stolen from his home and fraudulent credit card transactions April 18. The man said he suspected someone burglarized his Lauren Hall Court home while he was away April 15, according to an Alpharetta police report. A basement door, normally locked, was found unlocked, and a window-mounted air -conditioning unit was removed. Officers observed a cord appeared to have been ripped from the air conditioner. The man received notifications of purchases on his credit card April 17, prompting him to search for his wallet, which was missing along with other property. The man said his items were taken from an upstairs closet and desk. The credit card was fraudulently used at Kroger, Publix, Home Depot and Dollar Tree. The charges totaled $2,635.45. Items reported stolen from the home included four passports, two green cards, credit cards, a wallet, Apple Watch, gold ring, $500 and Gucci purse. — Jon Wilcox

Milton girls dominate Johns Creek By ANNABELLE REITER annabelle@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga — The Milton girls lacrosse team advanced to the Elite Eight of the class 2A state playoffs after a 18-6 home win over Johns Creek High May 1. The matchup between the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in Georgia stayed close in the first quarter until Milton went on an eight-goal spree, shutting out the Gladiators for nearly an entire quarter. Johns Creek attacker Rose Coluzzi led the team with four goals, getting it done on three free position shots. Fellow senior Madison Tredway struggled at times at the draw and the 8-meter arc, but she still got the offense moving in a leadership role. Attacker and primary draw taker Lillian Katula tied with senior midfielder Mckenna Merkel to lead the team with four goals apiece. The Eagles went 69 percent at the dot with the help of Katula and fellow sophomore Caroline Marshall. Katula said matching up against a top draw talent in Johns Creek’s Madison Tredway was a great challenge.

looked to keep Milton off the crease, but Godby’s adjustments came smoothly. “[Defenses] can’t focus on one or two of our girls or just one level of scoring,” Godby said. “Anybody is a threat, and we can adjust where we’re attacking from and go up high or inside. I’m proud of our girls, we can play anybody of the 24 on our roster.” When the Gladiators defense looked to zero in on one attacker, another emerged with more to give. Milton senior Anna Mellinger notched a hat trick and two assists from the X, both distributing the ball and scoring on her own. The Eagles look ahead to the Elite Eight where they will face either Oconee County or Decatur. Milton is looking to make its 20th consecutive Georgia state title game. Johns Creek finishes the season at 16-4, the second-best in program history. A strong sophomore class in Avery Mathewson, Hayden Huston and four-star Sydnee Cane should provide the backbone. Claire Vane and other tough freshmen should also contribute as the Gladiators replace veterans in the goalie, draw and leading goal scorer.

The Gladiators initially kept the game close, but the Eagles stretched a two-goal lead at the half into 12 by the final buzzer. Johns Creek attackman Brayden Ko contributed two of his team’s three points, including the only one scored by either team in the second quarter. Ko went down after a collision at the end of the first half but returned to the game. Despite the large goal deficit, Johns Creek performed well at the dot with a 65% win percentage. Starter Will Dell’Orto was supplemented by junior Daniel Louw to secure possessions, allowing the team to set their offense. The Gladiators defense held strong in the first half to slow Milton’s offense. Forced turnovers by sophomore Sam Doyle and freshman Drayden Giannelli helped to secure additional possessions when the Johns Creek offense struggled to hold onto the ball. Milton exploded into the second half. Despite coming on a bit strong and having a period of two concurrent

penalties, the Eagles defense held stiff and kept the Gladiators out of the back of the net even down two defenders. The Eagles also did not turn the ball over in the last two periods. The advantage had grown to eight goals when Milton went into overdrive, even denying Johns Creek a possession for several minutes of game clock in the fourth quarter. Milton midfielder Jordan Carrasquillo put up a hat trick and two assists against Johns Creek in his first game since being named to the all-state second team. He said working together as a team sealed the win for the Eagles. “Playoffs, it’s win or go home,” he said. “We came in prepared, we felt like we were gonna own our matchup. In the second half, we got back into it and we played how Milton plays.” Head coach Thomas Dell said the Eagles came out and proved what they knew they were capable of. “Our intensity was the big thing tonight,” he said. “Our kids really turned it on with energy. Our seniors stepped up and played the way we needed to play in this second half.” The Eagles turn their first region title in several years into a bid to the Elite Eight. They will face either Oconee County or Decatur in the third round of the class 2A state playoffs.

Fragile Gifts co-owner talks tariffs, laying down roots By HAYDEN SUMLIN hayden@appenmedia.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Bob and Suzan Bourman moved to Sandy Springs in 1983 for the city’s strong public schools. Before long, they established themselves in the community by opening a gifts and bridal registry shop, Fragile Gifts, which has become beloved throughout the city. Fragile, as many residents call it, sports a 9,000-square-foot showroom with walls covered in classic dinnerware, fine gifts and stemware. About 25 percent of its business comes from its bridal registry. The shop sits across Roswell Road from City Springs and the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. “It’s a little ma and pa store, and we still are an alternative to department stores,” Bob Bourman said. “What’s great is when you’re a little neighborhood store and you start meeting your neighbors and cliental ... to know them by first name is not something you get at the malls.” He said he thinks customers enjoy patronizing Fragile because they get things, like complimentary gift wrapping, that are hard to find in today’s world of online shopping and declining brick-and-mortar retail service. “We’re still doing it; we do it because we started doing it,” Bob said. “Now, people come here and expect we’re going to wrap … paper is more expensive, boxes, everything.” City Councilwoman Jody Reichel, who represents District 4 where the shop is

The business is nearly twice as old as the city. located, said Fragile has been her go-to place for gifts for 30 years. “Susan and Bob embody true customer service — always helpful, thoughtful and dedicated,” Reichel said. “I am so grateful for their loyalty and the special role they play in our Sandy Springs community.” Trade disputes spark worries When asked if the shop is seeing any impacts of trade disruptions and tariffs, Bob said they’re feeling it now. “We haven’t been hit yet with tariff surcharges, but they’re starting in the first week of May,” he said. “Many of our vendors have already reached out to us, instead of changing cost process they’re just going to add 10-20 percent to every invoice that we get, which is going to make it tough on us.” Pricing merchandise to match in-

creased taxes on imports can be tricky. “We’ve tried really hard to get our inventory where we want it to be … without overdoing it, not knowing what’s going to happen, so we won’t have to get too affected by the tariffs,” Bob said. “If [vendors] are doing the melamine from China, they’re already not taking delivery in May on goods because the tariffs are 145 percent and they just can’t afford that,” Bob said. “It’s a touchy situation ... who knows what’s going to happen, people are scared.” Melamine is an industrial chemical used as a coating in tableware and other common products like paints and plastics. The game right now is wait-and-see at Fragile Gifts. Bob said he’s noticed a decrease in foot traffic while customer questions on pricing and tariffs has increased. For a local business like Fragile Gifts, it’s a real problem as it approaches busy season with weddings and graduations. Bob said he hopes people, especially those in government, settle economic policies. Small business owners are paying for it right now. “Big department stores can absorb some of that stuff, they’re still buying at better prices than we are,” he said. “We’re kind of stuck; we’ll see in May; I get three or four emails a day from our vendors.” How it started Susan hails from Charleston, and Bob is a Pittsburgh native. The Bourmans found a home in Sandy Springs, sending their children to Riverwood International Charter School and watching their grandkids play ball at Chastain Park. Bob owned a series of athletic footwear franchises across Metro Atlanta in the early ’80s, which eventually turned into Lenox Mall’s Footlocker after decades of acquisitions and reorganizations.

“I was going to work for Nike, and my wife wanted to open up a little gift store in Sandy Springs,” Bob said. “So, I said, ‘Well, I got six months before I start to work for Nike,’ and here we are 38 years later.” Fragile Gifts has moved a couple of times in its nearly four decades in Sandy Springs. The shop is twice as old as the city, and the Bourmans have seen City Springs transform from an old Targetanchored shopping center into a retail, cultural and arts hub. The Bourmans opened their gift and registry shop Fragile in 1987 at a small strip mall across Mount Vernon Highway from City Springs. “We started in one, little 1,500-squarefoot location,” Bob said. After expanding the shop to encompass the entire building, the couple moved to the Centre Court Shopping Center at Hammond Drive and Sandy Springs Circle. Just a hundred yards away from the massive project at Mount Vernon Highway and Johnson Ferry Road, he said it’s been a little inconvenient. As far as pre-tariff business, Bob said it was solid.

Crabapple Live draws steady crowd By SARAH COYNE sarah@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton residents celebrated the inaugural Crabapple LIVE May 1, a chance to sample some of the flavors the city has to offer. The monthly celebration was held in the garden area behind Milton’s Cuisine and Cocktails, which joined with the city and Market District Crabapple to sponsor the event. From 5 to 8 p.m., visitors strolled through the garden filled with tents showcasing local businesses and listening to live music. Children joined in on the fun at the bouncy house in the Kids Zone. Milton resident Koho Smith hopes the event will be the city’s own version of Alive in Roswell. “We love [Alive in Roswell], and it’d be great to have something like that right in our neighborhood,” Smith said. Local restaurants and business will become a staple for each event including Hyde Brewing, Milton’s Cuisine and Cocktails, Painted Horse Winery and Vineyards, PlayWell Merch Co., Suite 200, Vice Steak Bar and Smash Burgers by Vice. Vice Provisions Managing Partner Nick Leahy chose to show his smash burger restaurant at the event to connect with the community. “We were pushing for this,” Leahy said. “It’s just a good way to meet everybody in the community and get them to meet you and get outside.” Creative displays included a flower truck and “plein air” painters who set up their easels on the grass. Crabapple LIVE will be held every first Thursday of the month. The next five editions will take place June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4 and Oct. 2.

3. Your frequency of sugar intake: Your habits also play a significant role in your oral health. Your frequency of sugar intake has a direct tie into the frequency of the occurrence of cavities. The more times you consume sugar, the more opportunities for cavities to take hold.

4. Your flossing habits: Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from the sides of your teeth, so not flossing on a consistent basis increases your risk of developing cavities between your teeth. 5. Your medications: When you eat or drink anything other than water, the pH of your mouth becomes acidic. Saliva’s job is to neutralize the acidic environment. Some medications cause xerostomia (or dry mouth). If your saliva is reduced or becomes thicker, your teeth have an increased risk of developing decay, especially along the gumline. Products containing xylitol are “mouth wetters,” and xylitol prevents bacteria from adhering to tooth structure, helping to prevent the effects of a dry mouth. Can a foot injury cause skin cancer? The curious case of Acral Melanoma Brought to you by – Dr. Brent Taylor, Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Of all the types of melanomas, acral melanoma is perhaps the most intriguing. This rare form of skin cancer sometimes arises from pressurerelated injuries, especially on the soles of the feet. Melanoma develops from melanocytes—the pigment-producing skin cells responsible for tanning. Acral melanoma occurs on the palms, soles, or beneath fingernails and toenails. While rare in countries with predominantly light-skinned European populations—where most melanomas stem from sun exposure—acral melanoma is the most common form of melanoma in many darker-skinned populations across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. What makes acral melanoma especially fascinating is that, unlike most cancers, it is not usually caused by sun damage or other typical carcinogens. If asked to name things that cause cancer, most people would list tobacco, alcohol, sun exposure, radiation, or viruses like HPV. But few would think to include stubbing a toe or stepping on a rock. Yet, injuries to the feet may contribute significantly to acral melanoma. A study in China found higher melanoma rates in the south compared to the north and hypothesized that this was due to the greater prevalence of barefoot walking in the south. These individuals experienced more foot trauma— contusions and punctures—compared to their northern counterparts, who more often wore shoes. In nonEuropean populations, melanomas on the soles are reported to be four to eight times more common than those on the palms, further supporting the idea that physical injury may be the key factor that originates most acral melanomas. But how does trauma or pressure damage DNA to the point of causing cancer? The answer may lie in the differences between the types of mutations seen in acral melanomas versus other forms of melanoma. Sunlight typically causes smallscale mutations—so-called “point mutations.” A photon of UV light acts like a microscopic laser, striking DNA and altering a single molecule within a gene. These UV-induced cancers display a characteristic “UV signature” in their genetic code – small and hyper focused mutations.

By contrast, the mutations in acral melanoma are large-scale. Entire sections of DNA can be broken, duplicated, or mis joined—suggesting massive structural damage. Rather than resembling the precision of a laser, these mutations look as if the entire DNA strand has been snapped in multiple places and clumsily reassembled. One researcher compared the pattern of damage to the chaos of a typhoon. As a student of biology, I found this puzzling. How could something like stepping on a rock cause such profound genetic disruption? I had always imagined DNA as strands of spaghetti floating gently in a watery nucleus, well cushioned from most physical forces. However, recent findings suggest that DNA may be more structurally constrained than previously thought and therefore more vulnerable. DNA chromosomes are not merely suspended in nucleoplasm—a watery fluid inside the nucleus. Instead, DNA appears to be anchored to a framework – the nucleokinetic or nuclear matrix. This scaffold, made of firm proteins, is attached to the DNA and actively interacts with it. If a mechanical shock is transmitted to this scaffold, it could create enough force to fracture or distort large sections of DNA— explaining the large-scale damage seen in acral melanomas. Acral melanoma remains one of the most understudied forms of melanoma, and the precise mechanisms behind its mutations are still unclear. Yet the hypothesis that mechanical stress, rather than chemical or radiative exposure, might be a major driver offers a compelling and mysterious contrast to other skin cancers. It is this mystery—and the possibility of a physically induced origin—that makes acral melanoma so captivating.

Roswell Riverside Sounds kicks off 25th season with Town Mountain By JAMIE GODIN newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Riverside Park buzzed with energy April 26 as the 25th annual Roswell Riverside Sounds concert series launched its summer lineup with a performance by alt-country band Town Mountain. The Asheville, North Carolinabased group delivered a high-energy set blending bluegrass and country influences, drawing a diverse crowd of young and old to the park's expansive green space along the Chattahoochee River. “In a show of gratitude tonight, as we open our 25th year of this concert series, we especially want to say thank you to the city of Roswell and to all of you, because we have loved every year putting together this series,” said a festival representative from the stage before the band came out. “And to all of you, thank you for being our community and supporting our community and all the great musicians that have come here for the past 25 years. Thank you for coming back year after year, thank you for listening, and thank you for bringing your friends and family with you.” According to Christine Ward, the city’s Special Events Manager, the season opener exceeded expectations. She estimated the crowd at “approximately 800+ attendees.“ The concert series, typically featuring six performances, will host four events this year on the last Saturday of each month through July. Organized by Lee J. Howard Entertainment and the City of Roswell, the series offers free, family-friendly music in a scenic outdoor setting. Attendees enjoyed food from local vendors provided by FabFoodTrucks.

The park's amenities, including hiking trails, fishing docks, and playgrounds, provided additional entertainment for guests of all ages. Blake, 28, who moved to Roswell from Florida in 2022, attended the concert with his black Labrador, Ziggy. “No, I’d never heard them before, but they’re pretty rad,” he said. “I heard there was a free concert within walking distance and thought, ‘Yep, let’s do it.’” He added, “Yeah, it’s good vibes out here. There should be more stuff like this for people to do.” Becca, a Roswell native, shared her appreciation for the music. “No I hadn’t heard them before but I’ve come to these things a few times before,” she said. “But I like this kind of music. It reminds me of the stuff my daddy would play.” Becca noted, “I don’t come here much, but I should more often, it’s a beautiful place.” The remaining concerts in the series are scheduled for May 24, June 28, and July 26, with Bee Taylor set to perform next. Riverside Park is set to undergo renovations beginning this fall, with construction expected to last through spring 2027. As a result, the concert series will go on hiatus in 2026. Ward said there is hope for the series’ return once renovations are complete. “As of now, we do expect Riverside Sounds to return following the renovation period, but no definitive plans have been made at this time,” she said. “We’ll be sure to share updates as soon as more information becomes available.” For more information on the Roswell Riverside Sounds concert series, visit roswellriversidesounds.com.

Capital assets total $126 million, or 72 percent, of all assets. The audit also showed the city has $33.6 million in restricted net position amounts, like cash from impact fees that are required to be spent for certain projects. Unrestricted net position stood at $15.6 million. “It’s noteworthy that in 2024 expenditures slightly outpaced total revenues, but at the end of 2024 general fund balance is about 40 percent of total expenditures,” Derzis said. “Anything over 25 percent is deemed to be a healthy position.” At the close of September, the general fund had an unassigned fund balance of $13.7 million, which represents 29 percent of the fiscal year 2024 budgeted revenues. The excess fund balance is required by the city and allows it to maintain an adequate reserve to cover unforeseen emergencies and revenue shortfalls. In other matters April 28, the City Council received an update on Deerfield Active, the city’s goal to create a sports complex on 32 acres on Deerfield Parkway. The comprehensive 2027 plan includes four diamond baseball fields, two rectangular fields, five playgrounds and four picnic pavilions. Staff used surveys and public input to guide design of the park. “We had 450 different people answer this survey,” Engineering Project Manager Robert Dell-Ross said. Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen showed the council two options. Both included two rectangular fields, playgrounds and picnic pavilions. But one included four 225-foot diamond fields. The other included four diamonds of varying sizes, from 200 feet to 275. “I don’t think there’s anything more important than getting the fields just right,” Councilwoman Carol Cookerly said. The next steps for Deerfield Active include a site plan approval recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board May 15 and a final approval from the City Council in June. Procurement for the construction will begin next spring, with completion set for the summer of 2027.

CARES group to conduct free wellness checks at Milton sites MILTON, Ga. — Milton Fire CARES will provide free wellness clinics to the public this spring through summer. The wellness checks will include electrocardiograms to check heart rates, test glucose levels or check blood pressure. Milton implements seasonal burn ban MILTON, Ga. — The seasonal burn ban is in effect for the City of Milton until Sept. 30. Between May 1 and the end of September, 54 Georgia counties, including Fulton, join to fight the risk of wildfires and to optimize air quality. “We in Milton, as well as our partners throughout the state, want to keep people and properties safe, as well as keep our air breathable, when temperatures climb,” Milton Fire Marshal Andrew Kennedy said. No open burning in any areas is allowed. This includes agriculturally owned land, defined as a parcel at least 1 acre. Exceptions to the ban include the need to produce or harvest crops on recognized agricultural procedures or on parcels 5

These exceptions do not apply when there is a Fire Danger Rating of 3 or higher, as measured by the Georgia Forestry Commission. The website is updated daily on the commission’s website, gatrees.org. UPS is executing the largest network reconfiguration in its history. In January, UPS announced a deal with Amazon, its largest customer, to lower delivery volume by more than 50 percent by the second half of 2026. When its contract came for renewal, CEO Carol B. Tomé said it was time to reassess margins. The layoff affects fewer than half a percent of all estimated 490,000 UPS employees. “While our building footprint is changing, our record of reliable pickup and delivery is not,” a UPS spokesperson wrote April 29. “We remain committed to providing industry-leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.” The company’s first quarter revenue just beat Wall Street’s estimate at $21.55 billion, which was a slight decline from last year. CEO Tomé told investors April 29 that uncertainty in global trade markets led to a drop in consumer confidence and some muted demand in February and March. Tomé also said the company’s reconfiguration is on track with 73 buildings expected to close by the end of June. “By modeling different scenarios, we will be able to adjust to rapid shifts in the business,” Tomé said. “Given today’s

The Intermediate care unit, also known as a step-down unit, will help care for patients who are recovering from critical illness, requiring ongoing monitoring or needing a higher level of care than a general ward can provide, but not intensive care from an ICU. Everybody has a price: two stories “You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant” – Arlo Guthrie, popular folk singer I want to tell you two very short stories. But before I share the stories, I want to throw out a couple ideas to RAY APPEN think about first. Publisher Emeritus Today, write a big ray@appenmedia.com enough check and you can get anyone or any country to do just about anything. Betray someone for 30 pieces of silver or sell out an entire country – an ally – for a check for a couple billion or maybe promises of lots of oil and a bunch of F-115SAs. Promise lots of people anything in return for their votes. That’s the way the world works, right? If the check is big enough, if the promises are appealing enough – even if they will not be fulfilled – everyone and everything is for sale. Right? And we’re good with that? Everything is a transaction. Everything is a deal. That’s all that matters. You give me what I want, and I will give you something you want. If you are the best at making deals, you always win, right? Do you? For how long – a year, maybe two? What happens after that? Tell me again what “to win” means. Who wins? Who actually loses? A long time ago, it mattered if someone told the truth. Now what matters is only that what a person says is believed or, if it is not challenged. Veracity is irrelevant now, it seems. Say something enough times and it becomes true, right? Seriously? A long time ago, in a far away land, there were people who we now call “old school.” They had this silly idea that a handshake was their bond, and if you shook hands on something, nothing else was needed; you could take it to the bank. These “old school” people believed that their word was their bond. “If I tell you I will do something, I will do it. If I tell you I won’t do something, I won’t do it. If I promise to pay you, I will pay you. If I say something, it will be the truth” – things like that. “Trust” was the basis of this old-school way of thinking. And trust is what we have just discarded – lost, absolutely abandoned – domestically and worldwide. It is probably unrecoverable at this point. Why would we do that? There used to be a country years ago where “rule of law” was the standard; every-

Hembree Farm historic renovation continues In a June 2023 column, I described the history of one of the oldest houses in Fulton County and the efforts underway to restore and preserve it for future generations. This week, I will BOB MEYERS update that column Columnist to describe efforts undertaken by the Kirschner family over the past two years. The Hembree house is a true treasure of historic rural Georgia architecture. Built between 1833 and 1835, the original two-room house consisted of a bedroom, a living area, some storage space and a porch. A kitchen was in a separate structure behind the house, and an outhouse was nearby. Two corn cribs were a short distance from the house. The house was continuously occupied by eight generations of Hembree family members until it was donated to the Roswell Historical Society by Hembree heir Carmen Ford. The Roswell Historical Society made an arrangement with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and put the house up for sale. Jared and Brandy Kirschner purchased the farmhouse and outbuildings in 2022 and began restoration almost immediately. Brandy’s mother, Yvonne Howell, has been a full partner in the restoration and moved into the farmhouse in November 2023 after extensive restoration. The house was clearly a gem in waiting. Doing much of the work themselves, Brandy and Jared stripped the walls of sheetrock and old paneling to uncover solid tongue and groove wood walls from trees probably cut on the property. Seven-inch wide floorboards 1½ inches thick and sometimes 35 to 40 feet long were in reasonably good shape. Originally 640 acres, the property today sits on acre. Hundreds of old bricks were piled on the property. Brandy and Jared carefully sorted them. Acceptable bricks of similar style, color and texture as the originals were to rebuild the three chimneys on the house and another on the external kitchen. The old chimneys had to be removed when the house was moved 500 feet in 2007 to make room for several new homes. The house has been modified over the years by successive Hembree families. Originally, it was approximately a 32 foot and 4 inches long by 16 ½ feet wide hallparlor farmhouse with two rooms and a front porch. Its current dimensions are

41 feet long by 48.5. feet. Many old windows had been stored in the attic. Many window frames were pre-Civil War. “The Hembree Farm has turned out far better than I could have hoped,” says Judy Meer, president of the Roswell Historical Society. “Brandy and Jared finished the house so beautifully that some Hembree family members have gifted early farm implements to them which they have put on display.” In 2024, the Kirschner’s and the Roswell Historical Society each received the annual Excellence in Stewardship Award by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The award recognizes those who “ensure the preservation of historic properties through stabilization and long-term care and maintenance.”

Ben Sutton, director of Preservation for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, said “The Kirschner’s have done most of their rehabilitation of the historic farm. They are well on their way to getting the property back into working order. They certainly deserved the award.” Brandy’s mother, Yvonne Howell, is the perfect resident of a historic house and kitchen. The restored kitchen will allow her to pursue her passion, teaching children to love history by giving them hands-on experience. As Guest Services coordinator for the Rosell History Museum she loves to show how things were done long ago. Among other ways of stimulating interest, she shows children toys from another era. She is currently working on

the kitchen, which is now functional with cast iron pots, Dutch ovens and kettles with legs so coals can be placed under them. “Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will watch or cook,” she says. “If they cook it, they can eat it.” She hopes to have the kitchen up and running this summer. When Yvonne worked at the Atlanta History Center, they had chickens on display. As a result, the Kirschner’s built a beautiful chicken coop where they have two beautiful Silkies, known for their fluffy feathers and gentle temperament and six Wyandotte chickens, a variety first bred in the 1870s in New York State, making them in a way historic. Their name derives from a Native American tribe. The family also has two Peking duck rescues. Other projects in the offing include restoring two ancient corn cribs that had to be taken down for safety and making walkways with some of the field stones used in the original construction. The Kirschner’s planted many apple, peach and maple trees “to bring back the farm feel,” says Brandy. The Kirschner family has come a long way since Brandy was a world class twirler and Jared was the Mike Man at all UGA football games. They have blended family – two children – successful careers and unbounded energy to create a truly special place. A voice and personality who shaped lives William “Cadillac Jack” Choate, II passed away last week. I have a theory that everyone will remember well who they were with during COVID. For me that’s Cadillac and Donna CARL APPEN Director of Content and Development Jack. carl@appenmedia.com We launched the “Cadillac Jack: My Second Act” podcast Jan. 7, 2020. In the beginning, my brother Hans and I split production duties, meaning that each week we both spent a day in the studio with Donna and Caddy. Once it got off the

ground I took over and eventually, in July 2021, we hired a dedicated producer. For a year and a half, Donna, Caddy and I would tread down to that basement studio and record a show, twice a week, every week. Back then I lived alone, my now-wife was getting her master’s degree in another state, and much of Alpharetta – including our office – was locked down. For a long time, Caddy and Donna were some of the only folks I would see in person. That period of time was pretty terrible for just about everyone in the world. Most folks were isolated, sad, sick, stressed or a combination of the above. I’ll be forever grateful I got to go through it with Donna and Cadillac.

Caddy taught me a lot of lessons in that studio. There were professional ones about media, production, salesmanship and talent. How to make an audience member feel like they’re family, or why you should say a guest’s full name every time you address them. Ask an Appen news reporter about my “three-strike” story policy – it came from a tip Caddy passed to me from an old program director. Caddy also gave me more than a few personal lessons, though he’d be bashful hearing about it. He showed me the impact you can have on folks by showing them you remember something they said in the past – especially when they didn’t think anyone was listening in the first

Of course, he also taught me and many others how to laugh harder than they ever had before. Our time together was limited to those studio hours.
