MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police Oct. 22 after she noticed $17,000 worth of fraudulent activity on her bank accounts.

Man, woman charged with forgery of IDs MILTON, Ga. — Police arrested a man and a woman Oct. 19 in connection with an attempt to withdraw $10,000 from a bank on Windward Parkway using a false ID. Bank staff called police at 11 a.m. that day when a woman approached a teller asking to withdraw $10,000 for her mother’s funeral and gave a suspicious card.

While officers were speaking to the woman who presented the card, a man approached the woman and attempted to leave once he spotted police. Officers stopped him as well.

The two originally gave fake names to the police, but eventually, the woman gave her real name and advised that there was a warrant for her arrest in Texas. She added that the man bought people’s identities off of the dark web and made fake driver licenses using that information.

When they searched him, police found several fake IDs in the man’s wallet.

Both the man and woman were arrested. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Tonya Davis of New Orleans, La., was charged with identity fraud concerning a deceased individual and first-degree forgery. The man, identified as 39-year-old Christopher Griffith of New Orleans, La., was

payment to her power company. She found $15,000 worth of fraudulent checks using her name.

She also found $2,000 worth of online purchases she had not made.

charged with four counts of identity fraud, three counts of second-degree forgery, with identity fraud concerning a deceased individual, and one count of first degree forgery.

Batteries reported stolen from department store MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 22 incident in which 100 car batteries were stolen from the Walmart on Windward Parkway.

Surveillance footage showed two men exit a car at 1 a.m. near the storage area that holds used car batteries.

The men were seen cutting the chain and lock off of the fencing. They then loaded the batteries into their vehicle.

About $1,500 worth of car batteries were taken.

Checks stolen in mail later used in purchases MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police Oct. 22 after she realized some checks had been stolen from here mailbox.

The woman told police she mailed the checks in September that she believes went missing. Two days later, two fraudulent purchases, worth $500 total, were made using her checks.

The woman also told police that another check from her family business account was also stolen in the mail. The recipient never received the check, and the woman later saw $200 worth of purchases using the banking information.

DUI arrests Lucas Christopher Tate, 23, of Commodore Trail, Bloomington, In., was arrested Oct. 19 on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta for DUI, failure to maintain lane, open container violation and obedience to traffic control device.

Edward Michael Rahill, 66, of Lancaster Square, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 14 on Ga. 9 in Alpharetta for DUI, open container and failure to maintain lane.

Nathaniel Antwan Williams, 34, of Stoney Ridge Lane, Johns Creek, was arrested Oct. 18 on Haynes Bride Road in Alpharetta for DUI, following too closely and no license on person.

Larry Eugene Fitzpatrick, 47, of Salem Drive, Alpharetta, was arrested Oct. 19 on Mayfield Road in Alpharetta for DUI and failure to maintain lane.

Shannon Carl Kelly, 42, of Commodore Drive, Chamblee, was arrested Oct. 17 on Atlanta Street in Roswell for DUI, failure to obey a traffic control device and supporting a cell phone.

John P. Ghering, 59, of Hollyridge Way, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 13 on East Crossville Road for DUI, open container and impeding the flow of traffic.

Librado Lopez Merino, 45, of Longleaf Drive, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 14 on Atlanta Street for DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving while unlicensed.

City could add acreage to former Milton Country Club property Purchase would provide access to southern end of park

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton’s seventh Greenspace Bond purchase could complement its first. The city has entered a contract to purchase 12 acres along Freemanville Road that would provide much-needed southern access to the former Milton Country Club property the city purchased last January.

The 12-acre property is at 14620 Freemanville Road with a price tag of $1.25 million, or about $104,000 an acre. The City Council approved a contract to purchase the site at its Oct. 21 meeting.

If the acquisition is completed, it would address one of the questions raised during the master planning process for the park: how to access the southern portion of the 139-acre site.

There are only four points of ingress to the park, and two are only permitted for use by first responders or city workers.

“We’ve struggled with the issue of southern access to the property, and for people who are coming to hike, to walk the property, right now the only way to get in would be Dinsmore (Road) through the active acres,” said Conservation Projects Manager Teresa Stickels. “There are times when active acres would be filled with swim and tennis, so we have long desired a way to get to the southern end of the property.”

Colt Whittall, chair of the Milton Greenspace Advisory Committee, said the board was unanimous in its support of the city purchasing the site.

“Access, egress into that has always been a little bit of a challenge, and we thought it was doable,” Whittall said.

“We had a couple of options. This gives

us an outstanding option. It’s not only a big, wide option, it’s a very pretty option, to be honest. The property is available, the funds are available, we have negotiated a reasonable contract at a reasonable price. The seven members of our committee are unanimous, and we want to move forward.”

Whittall added that the committee deemed some properties out of reach, but the Freemanville Road site came with a fair price tag.

“It is a reasonable value for a piece of land in this part of town that is a very pretty property that most likely supports a large yield of houses,” he said.

The city has eyed the property since last summer, but price was an issue.

Stickels said the former property owner listed the site for $1.59 million last June. After the price was lowered to 1.35 million, the city looked to make the

purchase, but the property went into foreclosure. The current owner put the property back on the market in July but wanted just a 3-day due diligence period. The city was able to negotiate a 45-day due diligence period along with the current price.

The city will still need to move quickly. The closing portion of the contract is included in the due diligence period. If the city needs added time to close, it must pay $100 a day under the contract.

While the council unanimously approved entering the contract, they shared concerns about impacts to neighboring homeowners.

City Attorney Ken Jarrard said Milton has the ability to privately sell “unusually shaped” pieces of property to the site’s neighbors if the homeowners want to purchase additional land.

And because the city will own the site, officials can elect to provide buffers to adjacent properties.

Jarrard said talks on the issue have been going on “for quite some time” on how to deal with large mailboxes in the right of way, and the city will continue to refine the ordinance and how it is enforced.

“This is only a step in that process,” he said.

One lingering question is who will pay for removing a mailbox that is deemed a safety hazard.

“That is something that is being debated right now, and that is probably

something the council may hear about in the future,” Jarrard told council members. “We have gone back and forth.

We’re just going to have to make the best recommendation to the council we can make that treats everybody fair, as fair as we can.”

The updates to the ordinance address all fixed objects in the right of way.

Previously, the regulations considered any fixed object in the right of way a safety hazard, but the update gives the city’s traffic engineer discretion in making that determination.

Updated ordinance addresses mailboxes set in right of way

The approved updates concern fixed objects in the city’s right of way and specifically address mailboxes. The ordinance bans the installation of brick, stone or concrete mailboxes in the right of way.

“The problem is, they’re in the right of way,” Jarrard said. “So, they are on City of Milton property, and there’s two hazards. One, of course, is obviously the notion of the motoring public hitting something that is brick in the right of way. And secondly, it’s the limited view.

MILTON, Ga. — For years Milton has rented much of its parks and rec services. Now, the city is looking to own.

Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cregge used the analogy to describe the future of Milton’s parks and programming.

Renting came in the form of payments the city has made to Alpharetta for years under the two cities’ parks agreement.

The contract allowed Milton residents to participate in Alpharetta recreation programs without paying an out-of-city fee.

In return, Milton cut its neighboring city a check — it’s rent so to speak. The last annual check rang in at $452,000.

Late last year, the two cities began rehashing the contract, but no agreement was reached.

“We could not find a mutually beneficial plan,” Cregge said.

Cregge said Alpharetta was a great partner for many years, but the talks are over for now, and Milton is moving on.

That means the city can now use those funds, once used for “rent,” to buy.

facilities. The city is hamstrung by a limited number of athletic fields and indoor spaces and no recreation center. But in recent months, Milton has made strides to expand its facilities and is eyeing more.

With the purchase of the former Milton Country Club property, the city has added swim programs to its offerings and continue the site’s tennis program. The master plan for the park also includes adding two more tennis courts and the potential for volleyball courts.

The renovation of the clubhouse could open the door for additional programs with dedicated spaces for possible dance, art or other programs.

The city is not looking to expand programming right now, Cregge said.

Rather, the focus is on getting its current programs to a level for success. However, he did say if certain opportunities were presented, Milton could consider additional programs in the near future.

For example, Cregge said the clubhouse at the former Milton Country Club property has a full kitchen, so the city could at least consider offering classes or other culinary-related programs.

In recent months, the city has been mulling additional activities. Milton’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has been compiling a list detailing what recreation programs the city should consider, and it will pass along those recommendations to city staff and the City Council.

The push for more facilities has also been ongoing. The city is under contract to purchase the United Sports Complex on Cox Road which includes two full-sized soccer fields and a half-sized turf field.

Cregge said if the city finalizes the purchase, those fields can host the city’s boys lacrosse programs which are in need of playable fields.

Milton also earmarked funds to purchase a baseball field in its 2020 budget.

Cregge said baseball’s popularity has been growing rapidly in recent years, while lacrosse, though still popular, has hit a plateau in registrations.

Another sport growing in popularity is basketball through the city’s partner, Halftime Sports, he said. The growth could mean the city will need to consider more indoor spaces. Milton currently has partnerships with local entities to use their courts.

There is still much work to be done to improve and expand on Milton’s parks and recreation programming, but along with added passive park spaces, Cregge said it is an exciting time for him and residents.

“For years it was all about master plans, trails plans and all that,” Cregge said. “Now it’s go time. It’s the most exciting time in my seven years with the city.”

City kicks off ‘Meet Me in Milton’

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Dubbed a familyfriendly block party, the city launched Meet Me in Milton Oct. 26 in downtown Crabapple, an inaugural get-together for what organizers hope will be a longstanding tradition.

Despite a soggy forecast, the weather mostly cooperated for the kickoff event which featured live music from Process of Elimination, food and drink vendors, games and other activities on The Green adjacent to Crabapple Market and City Hall.

The city announced Meet Me in Milton in September as an initiative to bring

the community together for the events and to foster economic prosperity in downtown Crabapple.

Last week’s event served as a sort of pilot, with events resuming next spring.

The city will host Meet Me in Milton gatherings from 4 to 8 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month from April through September.

Each gathering will have a different feature on The Green, with plans including a cornhole tournament, outdoor movie screening, a car show, art show and other events that will draw crowds to the area.

Milton remains tied atop region standings with win over Forsyth Central

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com Class 7A Milton 37, Forsyth Central 7 Forsyth Central scored more points Friday night than their combined point total from the previous three games against Milton, but it was not near enough. The Eagles captured their 11th straight 5-AAAAAAA win on the road in Cumming, downing the Bulldogs 37-7.

Milton is tied atop the 5-AAAAAAA leaderboard with North Forsyth at 3-0 in region play.

Eagles’ quarterback Devin Farrell and running back Ahmad Junearick combined for four touchdowns to lead Milton.

Farrell scored on a 17-yard rush to give the Eagles an early lead, and Junearick ran to the end zone early in the second to extend the margin. Farrell’s second touchdown came four minutes later with a throwing strike to Jake Walter.

Central cut the deficit to 21-7 with a touchdown pass from Bronson Landreth, but Jordan McDonald and Junearick added rushing scores in the fourth to secure the win.

The Eagles (5-3, 3-0) will bring their unblemished region record on the road again Friday to take on Lambert. After

Alpharetta 28, Northview 12 Alpharetta put its undefeated Region 7-AAAAAA record on the line Friday and came away with a 28-12 win over Northview at home.

Northview led 6-0 after a low-scoring first half, but Alpharetta took the lead early in the third with Kristofer Thomas returning the kickoff for a touchdown.

Quarterback Will Gerdes extended the gap to 14-6 a few minutes later with a passing score.

Cambridge 59, Pope 21 Cambridge earned a crucial win over Pope Friday night to improve their playoff hopes with just one game remaining in their regular season schedule.

The Bears improved to 3-4 in Region 7-AAAAAA play with their lopsided win, putting them at sixth in the standings.

The Bears’ 59 points was the second most in a game in program history.

Cambridge was led offensively by five touchdowns from quarterback Zach Harris. The sophomore connected with Hayden Gardella for two scores and with TJ Mowery and Evan Kurtz for one grab each. Harris also added a 3-yard touchdown run.

Running back Philip Michael Collins compiled two rushing scores.

Cambridge scored early and often and led 38-7 at halftime before cruising to the dominant win, their first over the Greyhounds since 2016.

The Bears (5-4, 4-3) have a bye before closing out their regular season Nov. 8 against Alpharetta. Cambridge is seeking its first playoff berth since 2016 and just their second all-time.

region play with a 30-point victory over winless Centennial.

Following a heartbreaking loss to Dunwoody Oct. 18, Centennial stuck with the Gladiators in the first half with Johns Creek holding a 10-3 lead.

However, the game opened up in the Gladiators’ favor in the final 24 minutes of play.

Ben Whitlock threw his second touchdown of the night to extend the lead early in the third, and Will Watson added a rushing score seven minutes later to give Johns Creek a 23-3 edge.

Whitlock threw touchdown number three early in the fourth. Centennial responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass, but the Gladiators racked up two more scores to remain undefeated in region play.

Hornets outlast Walton in overtime for vital region win

ROSWELL, Ga. — With the forecast calling for soggy conditions, Ray Manus Stadium was far from full Friday night, and Roswell’s marching band was given the night off. But the atmosphere was anything but dull with the Hornets and Walton, the two defending Region 4-AAAAAAA champions, duking it out in a defensive battle that needed overtime to be settled.

With the game deadlocked at 7-7 after four quarters, Roswell (5-2, 2-1) went on offense first and needed just three plays to find the end zone. The Hornets’ defense then stood tall, forcing a turnover on downs to seal the victory.

Hornets head coach Matt Kemper made no bones about the importance of the win. Roswell entered the game 1-1 in a region in which teams are only given five games to earn playoff spots and

region titles.

“It’s huge,” Kemper said. “Now we’re going to take care of our business, [Walton] can hopefully take care of business, beat Cherokee, and we’ll both be hosting in the first round.”

In a contest where points were at a premium, the Hornets scored on their opening possession with a 13-play, 77-yard drive capped off by a 9-yard touchdown rush from John Copenhaver.

Roswell started two more drives in Walton territory in the first half but was forced to punt on both possessions.

Walton (4-4, 2-1) tied the contest early in the second with a long drive of their own. The Raiders went 90 yards on 16 plays, led by the rushing of Kenny Djaha with quarterback Zak Rozsman calling his own number for a 4-yard touchdown run.

Walton was set up to take a lead into the half after Roswell quarterback Ethan Roberts’ pass was tipped and intercept-

ed. The Raiders drove to Roswell’s 30yard line, but Conor Cummins’ field goal as time expired on the second quarter curved wide left.

With the score still tied at 7-7 into the fourth, Roswell used rushes from Marquis Willis, Nnamdi Orjioke and Copenhaver to drive 62 yards into the red zone, but Walton held on a fourth-and-8 on their own 18-yard line.

“We got a little stagnant there in the middle but moved the ball still with some consistency,” Kemper said. “I’d like to have seen us punch it in after some of those drives, though.”

Walton took over on their own 20yard line with under two minutes to go and drove inside Roswell territory, but the Hornets forced the Raiders to punt with 18 seconds remaining, pushing the game into overtime.

Appen celebrates best in business Annual gala honors readers’ favorites

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — There was dancing, dinner and air of celebration Oct. 24 as some 450 members of the business community gathered at Alpharetta’s Metropolitan Club for the seventh annual Best of North Atlanta Gala awards ceremony.

The event, hosted each year by Appen Media Group, recognizes the best businesses in North Atlanta as determined by readers. This year, more than 30,000 people cast ballots for their favorite business in any of 114 categories, from cosmetic surgery to auto service repair.

“We hold this gala every year in an effort to recognize the best businesses our communities have to offer as decided by our readers,” said Appen Media Publisher Hans Appen. “And wow, our readers had a lot to say this year. We shattered the record for total number of voters with just over 30,000 people voting.”

The reader engagement in the survey says a lot about the appreciation residents have for the high quality businesses they patronize, Appen said.

“It also says a lot about the enormous honor it is to receive one of these awards,” he said. “It’s a competitive contest, and winners should be proud of the recognition.”

In addition to the businesses recognized as best and runner-up in each category, the gala honors two businesses in premier categories.

The local franchise was honored for its popular family dining experience and its array of philanthropic efforts in the community. Those efforts include promoting local charities on its social media and championing fundraising efforts on their behalf.

“I’m humbled by this,” Ron Altman said. “For us, the privilege of being in Alpharetta and serving this wonderful community of people who like our food is just a great blessing.”

He said the most gratifying aspect is the ability to incorporate charitable campaigns as part of the business.

Terrie agreed.

“We do what we love,” she said. “We love serving the community, and I’m blown away to be recognized for that.”

The other premier award, the One to Watch Award, honored Sherri Selman and Lisa Wilson, co-founders of NexSeason Transitions, a firm specializing

One recipient, Edna Blackman, 85, received the certificate for Best Senior Activity Center for Roswell Senior Center.

“It means a lot,” Blackman said. “The award also means we appreciate the help we receive. For many seniors, this is their second home.”

Kristen Lewkowitz received the award for Best Art Gallery/Retailer on behalf of the Johns Creek Arts Center. The nonprofit also received awards for children’s

lessons and children’s parties.

“That’s fantastic for us,” she said.

“We’re a nonprofit, and the more people who can come to our facilities, the more people we can bring art to.”

Name recognition was also important to Danielle Boglione, co-founder of The Maids cleaning service in Roswell, which was honored as runner-up in maid services.

“It helps to give peace of mind to people when we go inside their homes,” she said. “There are single moms, working moms with a lot going on.”

Following the awards ceremony, the gala concluded with a dance and social.

Appen said the entire staff pitched in to make the event a success.

“It took months to prepare, and everyone pitched in,” he said. “We had some hiccups along the way, but I’m blessed to work with an amazing team, and I am proud of the end result.”

Developer plans 900-home subdivision in Peachtree Corners One of the largest residential projects in the metro area is being proposed in Peachtree Corners on 115 acres that sprawl along the Chattahoochee River. Peachtree Corners has come a long way over the last several years since it incorporated. For years it had been known as a strip of aging retail centers you had to travel through in getting from Roswell to I-85 along Holcomb Bridge Road and Jimmy Carter. But since incorporating, city officials launched a rebuild of the city that included a new town center that opened earlier this April.

The town center sits on 21 acres across from the Forum that was purchased in 2013. Following a Livable Center Initiative study, the city rezoned the property to mixed-use and approved a town center design concept in 2014.

In 2015 it signed a contract with Fuqua Development and sold the property to them in 2017, the same year of the project’s groundbreaking.

The town center included a large town green, a veterans monument, a significant amount of retail and some residential townhomes. Their plan is to also include a botanical garden in the

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the 115-acre site is actually the old campus of the headquarters of Fiserv. The existing buildings will be torn down to make way for the residential development.

The plat has 4,000 linear feet of frontage along the river and the homebuilder said there will be sweeping views of the river.

Final plans have not been submitted, but the project is slated to include condominiums, townhomes and singlefamily homes, as well as age-restricted independent and assisted living facility.

It will be gated.

In the ABC article, Peachtree Corners mayor spoke in favor of the project.

“We want to make sure that housing for these citizens is available,” he said.

“This project will provide that housing while respecting the sensitive river corridor and tree canopy that we all love and enjoy.”

The builder expects to break ground in January with the first homes being up for sale by the end of 2020.

Ashton Woods Homes also proposed a 971-unit residential project along the Chattahoochee River just up the road in Duluth. It would sit on 145 acres off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth on property that was formerly a golf course.

According to the Chronicle, a recent proposal was to include 161 townhomes with the rest being single-family homes.

Of the 145 acres, 65 acres will be preserved as open space.

In Lawrenceville, another developer is proposing 171 homes on 32 acres on Cedars Road near Winder Highway that will include townhomes and single-family homes. And near the Mall of Georgia, another is proposing 245 homes on 58 acres off Bart Johnson Road.

While much smaller, but still large in measure of recent residential developments, another project has been proposed just up the road in Tucker. Plans have been filed for a 22.5-acre property at the LaVista Road-Midvale Road intersection, about a mile outside of I-285 near Northlake Mall. The project would include 63 single-family homes with 5.6 acres of open space.

With inventory still low, especially for houses under $400,000, there seems to be a strong market for residential construction.

For every meeting you have, you should have specific goals and objectives that will help you develop an overall agenda for the meeting.

Developing a meeting guide with an outline of the topics and questions you want to ask is a great way to prepare for a meeting.

When asking questions, it’s best to start at a high level. Your questions should be open-ended and require your customer to respond with more than a “yes” or “no” answer. As you begin to understand more about your customer’s business, you can start asking probing questions about their specific wants and needs. Asking questions about some of the issues or challenges they are facing are great ways to identify potential opportunities to help them.

Having a meeting guide with good questions will help ensure you are a good listener. By being a good listener, you are much more likely to establish trust and credibility with your customers, a requirement for doing business with them.

Boys Cambridge head coach Chip Flemmer returns for his eighth season leading the Bears, and he views the 2019 season as a “new chapter” in the program. The Bears focus has shifted from offense to defense this year, with returning seniors Benton Harkness and Sola Adebisi.

Alpharetta is under the direction of new head coach Clay Crump who says the Raiders will lean heavily on seniors Josh Spencer and Jayden Stephens, two players with significant varsity experience. The Raiders are looking to improve on their 14-11 mark last year.

Milton head coach Allen Whitehart is looking to take the next step with the Eagles in 2019. He expects big seasons from senior Evan Hurst and sophomore point guard Bruce Thornton, who is rated a four-star recruit and a top-50 player in the country for his class, according to 247Sports.

Roswell is coming off a trip to the elite eight a season ago, and head coach Ty Phillips is back for his 13th season with the Hornets. Phillips said Roswell is looking to build off last year’s playoff run with three players returning, Chase Webb, Jordan Pridgett and Michael Fitzgerald.

Northview returns an experienced group after graduating only two seniors from last year’s team. Although the team won only three games last year, Titans head coach Steven Bombard loves what he’s seen from the players this offseason in terms of buying in to the program.

Chattahoochee head coach Chris Short is focused on the Cougars’ culture in his third year as head coach.

Chattahoochee’s backcourt includes senior Cameron Sheffield, a verbal commit to Rice University, and junior A.J. White.

Johns Creek returns a veteran team in Keenan Temple’s fourth year as head coach. The Gladiators have seven seniors on their roster, which should help their efforts to return to the postseason

for the first time since the 2015 season.

Centennial head coach Matt Barksdale called his first year as Knights head coach a success despite finishing with a losing record. Barksdale said he is excited about the direction of the program, and he expects juniors Kyle Duncan and Logan Turner to lead the way for the Knights.

Girls Johns Creek enters the 2019-20 season coming off back-to-back appearances in the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Gladiators compiled a 12-4 record Region 7-AAAAAA play and will be led by returning starters Ahmia Childs and Samantha Breslow.

Chattahoochee brought in new head coach Lorenzo Withrite to lead the Cougars girls basketball team in 201920, as they look to move on from a three-win season last year. Senior Kati Chatton and junior Leana Abebe have emerged as leaders on the court for the Cougars.

Centennial returns several seniors in 2019, including Bailey Hebermehl, Grace Dulion and Mya Davis, who are looking to make their first trip to the state tournament together. The Knights last appeared in the state tournament in the 2015 season.

Milton hopes to turn things around after winning only three games in the past three years and going winless in 2018. The Eagles are led by new head coach Tracy Walls, their fourth head coach in five years.

Alpharetta looks to continue its success after making it to the state tournament the past three years. Firstyear head coach Rickey Jordan expects sophomore Simone Lett and junior Mary Grace Durham to play key roles for the Raiders.

Cambridge head coach Lesley Broadwell is hoping to take the Bears to the next level after building the program up since its inaugural season in 2012.

The Bears will lean on juniors Angelina Cofrancesco and Kennedy Daniels as they seek their first state tournament appearance in school history.

Roswell head coach Antonio Wade returns for his third season leading the Hornets, who are hungry for a championship after a 21-9 record and trip to the elite eight a year ago. The Hornets will be sizable in the paint with 6-foot3 senior Kate Manley, a Nicholls State commit, returning this year.

Local basketball teams contend with use of two different balls Players faced with use of varying equipment when season kicks off

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The basketball is the central focus throughout each local high school game, but it is easy to overlook its importance to the feel and flow of the game. That might not be the case this year.

The GHSA has permitted teams to either use the Wilson Wave ball, which has been the organization’s official ball for several years, or the new Wilson Evo NXT. The shift in equipment goes far beyond a name change. The two balls carry a price difference and have a significantly different feel. The Wave includes 24 grooves around the ball while the Evo is a more traditional, spherical ball.

The Evo will be mandatory for girls and boys basketball in the 2020-21 season, but this year, schools will have the option to use either ball, with the home team determining which Wilson model will be used as the game ball. That means players could have to contend with playing one ball during a Tuesday night game and the other on Friday.

Drew Catlett, head boys coach of the defending Class-A Private state champs St. Francis, said he is not concerned with his players using different balls throughout the season.

“I think the guys, when they play AAU or over the summer, they might play with a Wilson, play with a Spalding, they play with different balls all summer,” Catlett said. “I think as a coach you sometimes over worry, but my own opinion is, if you can shoot, you can shoot with anything.”

However, the Knights’ coach said the cost difference did raise his eyebrows.

most solely through fundraising.

“That’s my only gripe with it,” Catlett said. “I bought 12 new Waves last year and 12 the year before that. I can’t just discard them. That’s a lot of money.”

Catlett said with budget restraints, he will likely have to phase in the Evo’s, and it could be 2 to 3 years before he has a full rack.

Another issue is getting a hold of the new balls. Due to a backup with St. Francis’ vendor, Catlett had to purchase the team’s two Evo’s at a retail store.

While other coaches in the state have taken to Twitter to complain about vendor backups, that was not an issue for Chris Short, head coach of the Chattahoochee boys team.

Short has a stock of Evo’s, but he will also use Wave balls throughout the season in practice.

“We have both balls, and my plan is to infuse and work in the new ball to any situation in practice that I can,” Short said. “We are going to split time with each ball so we are acclimated so they’re not surprised in the moment.”

The Cougars’ coach said his players are split on the new ball.

“Some like it, some don’t,” he said.

“Some like the feel of it, some hate the color, we’re kind of all over the place.

I think as a coach you sometimes over worry, but my own opinion is, if you can shoot, you can shoot with anything.”

Short said Chattahoochee’s region, 7-AAAAAA, could vote on using one model throughout regular season region games or in the region tournament.

Catlett said Region 6-A could make a similar move.

Teams coming out of their region tournament looking to make a deep run in the playoffs will need to be familiar with the Evo. The GHSA has mandated that either ball can be used in the opening rounds of the state

tournament, but only the Evo will be used in the semifinals and state championships.

For that reason, the Roswell boys will use the Evo throughout the season.

“If it’s the state tournament ball, that’s what you’ll play at Roswell,” head coach Ty Phillips said.

Phillips said the verdict is still out on the Evo. He, along with Catlett and Short, said there were rashes of complaints from players, and even officials, on the Evo during GHSA-sanctioned camps in July, but Phillips said the balls appear to be more playable once they are worn in.

“It was not their favorite ball at first, but they adjust,” Phillips said. “In the end, it’s just playing basketball.”

All three coaches said that they will be downplaying the issue of using two balls throughout the season to their players.

“I’m not going to make a big issue of it with the players, because once you get it in their head that it’s the ball, that can affect them,” Catlett said.

Phillips said he will not bring up the topic with his players.

“It would be a mistake to make it an issue because then you get kids thinking about something they can’t control anyway,” he said.

White County looked to tie the game late, but the Danes’ defense held on an attempted fourth down conversion with two minutes, allowing Denmark to run out the clock and punch its ticket to the playoffs.

Running back Elijah Green scored three touchdowns in the first half, and the Titans cruised to the win, their 11th straight in Region 7-AAAA play. The victory also extends BT’s win streak over teams outside of the top-10 in the state rankings. The Titans have not lost to an unranked opponent in the regular season since 2013.

The Titans (7-1, 4-0) will continue their budding rivalry with Marist (9-0, 5-0) Friday night in a battle of top-5 ranked teams. The programs have met four times with the winner of the contest either securing the 7-AAAA title or the Class 4A state championship. BT is 3-1 in the series, and three games have been decided by a total of six points.

BT downed the War Eagles, 16-7, to take the 2017 Class 4A state title.

Class-A Private Fellowship Christian 55, Mount Pisgah 14 Fellowship Christian has made a habit of winning big this season, and that continued Friday with the Paladins downing Mount Pisgah, 55-14, in Johns Creek. Fellowship has scored 42 or more points and has held opponents to 21 points or less in all eight of its games this season.

Pinecrest Academy 55, King’s Ridge 0 In a matchup of two teams in need of a win, Pinecrest Academy won its first game of the season and handed King’s Ridge its sixth-straight loss Friday in Forsyth County.

Pinecrest’s shutout was its first since 2016, and its 55-point winning margin was the highest in program history.

Pinecrest wasted no time in establishing their dominance in the game and opened a 48-0 lead at the half.

The Paladins scored on their opening offensive play of the game and needed just four minutes of play to lead by three scores.

King’s Ridge (1-7, 0-6) will take on its neighbors, St. Francis, at home Friday to close out its subregion B schedule. Pinecrest (1-7, 1-5) is on the road against Mt. Paran.

Needing a stop to secure the win, Roswell’s defense heeded the call.

After a 1-yard rush from Djaha, Evan Plunkett pushed the Raiders back to the 19-yard line with a sack. Plunkett, a junior, was thrust into a new role to replace Doneiko Slaughter, who is out with a broken hand. Plunkett batted down a pass and had two tackles for a loss.

“Plunkett did a great job,” Kemper said.

Roswell brought pressure on the ensuing third-and-long play and forced Rozsman to scramble to set up fourthand-9. The Hornets’ secondary gave Rozsman few options down the field, and with the pocket collapsing, the quarterback threw the ball to a receiver in the flat.

Though his target had space, the pass skipped off the ground, sending Roswell’s bench onto the field in celebration.

“I’m proud of the ways the guys played hard and physical,” Kemper said.

Roswell compiled 201 yards rushing with Willis leading the charge with 56 yards ahead of Hill’s 51 and Copenhaver’s 46. Savion Mccrary added 32 yards on nine carries.

Walton compiled 245 yards of total offense, led by 154 yards rushing from Djaha.

Knights record ‘signature win’ over Mount Paran

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — For the first time in school history, St. Francis has bragging rights over Mount Paran Christian.

The Knights (5-3, 4-2) won 42-25 over the Eagles in the late-season Region 6-A matchup, their first win in four attempts against the school.

Senior quarterback Josh Gil rushed for one touchdown and nearly 150 yards and passed for three touchdowns and nearly 200 yards. Senior wide receiver Isaiah “Zay” Wadsworth finished with over 150 receiving yards and one touchdown.

“We’re trying to build a program,” said head coach Frank Barden. “We had really good kids and a good foundation laid last year, and this year we were just looking for a signature win. To get that win and get a signature win for our program, that’s big. I’m so proud for St. Francis.”

The St. Francis defense held strong much of the night, and the offense looked like a well-oiled machine from start to finish.

The Knights scored first on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Hunter Jones. The score was set up by a 57-yard pass from Gil to Wadsworth.

Early in the second quarter, Gil took a run 41 yards for a touchdown to extend the St. Francis lead.

Mount Paran scored its first points of the night on a 3-yard touchdown run by Alex Lee to put the score at 14-7.

The seven-point margin didn’t last long, however. On the second play of the Knights’ next drive, Jai Smith took a handoff 80 yards for a touchdown, putting the Knights back out in front by two

scores. St. Francis carried its 21-7 lead into the half.

The third quarter was a period full of scoring. Mount Paran started out with the ball and added a field goal to make it a 21-10 game.

The Knights responded with a 5-minute, 71 yard drive capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run by Gil. The Eagles responded on their ensuing drive with a 1-yard touchdown run of their own to bring the score to 28-17, setting up for an exciting finish in the fourth quarter.

Early in the final period, the Eagles’ defense gave up one of many big plays to the Gil-Wadsworth attack. This time, Gil evaded the pass rush and was hit as he threw, but not before he found Wadsworth down the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown.

Needing a stop on defense to save any chance at a comeback, the Eagles were unable to contain the Knights’ offense.
