Scuffle ends with Alpharetta man cited for disorderly conduct MILTON, Ga. — Alpharetta and Milton police responded to an Oct. 5 fight on North Main Street.

The incident led to Quinton Gregory Smith, a 43-year-old Alpharetta man, being charged with disorderly conduct.

According to a Milton police report, a woman was telling Smith about her recent engagement when an 18-year-old man jumped in on the conversation. Witnesses told police that Smith was irked by the interruption and began yelling at the teen, then pushed him against a vehicle in the parking lot. The victim said Smith also grabbed his hair.

Early voting for General Election now underway FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Early voting for the Nov. 3 General Election is now underway at several locations in North Fulton. Advanced voting will take place Monday through Friday through October 30 with select dates for Saturday and Sunday voting.

Early voting is available Monday through Friday Oct. 12-16 and Oct. 19-23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Oct. 26-30 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

PUBLIC SAFETY from the victim, telling police he “didn’t like a 43-year-old man picking on an 18-year-old kid.” Smith denied pushing the teen, according to reports. He told police he only talked to the victim.

But investigators found probable cause that he attacked the teen and was the primary aggressor based on witness statements.

Woman cited for stalking after incident at restaurant

MILTON, Ga. — Police were called to a self-storage facility on Oct. 10 after a Gainesville woman reported that someone stole clothes worth hundreds of dollars.

According to a police report, the victim, 63, told officers the threads were taken overnight from her storage unit at CubeSmart, 622 N. Main St. She valued the stolen clothes between $300 and $400.

The woman suspected someone may have snuck into the unit and swiped her clothes while she was inside packing items in a suitcase. She described some of the items as new, never removed from their original packaging.

ROSWELL, Ga. — A Roswell woman was accused of following store employees to their homes after she had been kicked out of a deli, according to Roswell police.

Police arrested 22-year-old Veronica Martinez-Granda, of Park Ridge Court, and charged her with stalking.

According to the report, Martinez-Granda stole a cell phone and caused a dispute at American Deli, 10479 Alpharetta St., on Oct. 7. The store’s manager and an employee called police and requested a criminal trespass warning be issued to the woman.

Officers responded to a Hemingway Lane apartment complex early the following morning. The deli manager said he noticed Martinez-Granda following him and his employee home. Police found the woman’s Volkswagen Jetta parked across the street and spotted her standing in a breezeway, the report stated. She claimed she was visiting a friend’s apartment in another building.

But when she led officers to the supposed friend’s unit, the resident said she didn’t know Martinez-Granda.

Local charity sees record numbers as families sign up for holiday aid North Fulton nonprofit seeks volunteers, funds

By MATT BRUCE news@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The holidays are approaching, and that means it’s busy season at North Fulton Community Charities.

The Roswell-based nonprofit spends much of the year addressing homelessness and hunger. But the focus shifts to easing the financial strain on struggling families in the lead up to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On Oct. 5, NFCC opened applications from families for five holiday giveback programs. North Fulton County is on pace for a record year of need. NFCC officials said more than 700 families signed up for holiday help through the first week of registration.

“We have never seen this high a demand,” NFCC Executive Director Holly York said. “We just have had to add so many families because of COVID that have never been in this situation before.”

The nonprofit has organized a winter

coat drive and is collecting turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner giveaways. That coincides with donations being accepted for senior gift baskets and a holiday toy drive. Families in financial crisis can also begin signing up for a holiday sponsor later this month.

York said she expects the number of people who participate in this year’s slate of holiday programs will be more than double the usual rate. The programs aim to alleviate the financial strain of seniors and families living in poverty or from paycheck to paycheck around holiday season.

York said organizers will make a number of changes this year to keep participants and volunteers socially distanced. That could mean restricting the number of families allowed at giveaways and scheduling more pickup dates.

This month is a critical period. The program needs more food and gift donations, and volunteers are needed in abundance to handle the high demand.

York encouraged schools and busi-

nesses to organize toy and food drives, but she said she understands that could be a challenge during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re having to be more creative, more flexible,” York said. “We’ll be especially challenged because many offices that normally do that for us are not working in person, so they’re not going to be able to do the toy drives. And then our biggest food drives in the North Fulton area was the schools this time of year. And they’re just going back.”

Coat drive Warm Coat Day has kicked off NFCC’s holiday assistance season for the past 13 years.

Last year, about 1,900 new and gently worn coats, jackets, hats, scarves and gloves were distributed.

This month, those items can be donated through Oct. 31 at the Ed Isakson/ Alpharetta YMCA, 3655 Preston Ridge Road. NFCC has registered a wish list of items at Target. The charity will continue to accept donations Nov. 2-4 at the Old Thomasville Furniture store,

buildings, teachers and students were again in the same classrooms — albeit socially distanced and wearing face masks under the new rules of normal.

Approximately 60 percent of the district’s 90,600 students chose to return to schools. The rest chose to continue with classes online.

Among North Fulton’s 48 schools, the return rate was slightly higher with about 65 percent of students opting for face-to-face instruction.

at Vickery Mill Elementary in Roswell, to fewer than 35 percent returning in person at Creekview Elementary in Alpharetta.

Zone 5, which includes schools in the Centennial and Roswell high school cluster, saw the highest rate of return with 76 percent of students opting for in-person instruction. Zone 6, which includes Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools, had the lowest return rate, with just over half of students back in classrooms.

School Superintendent Mike Looney said the district has been planning since

last spring on how to safely reopen schools as the pandemic persists. A phased reopening tied to health data served as the Fulton School System blueprint.

“I’m really pleased and thankful that we stayed true to the commitment [I made] to the community of letting the data drive the decision-making process,” Looney said.

Schools began phase one after Labor Day, beginning with small groups of students in school for one day a week and gradually adding more students for longer periods.

Looney said the decision to move forward with the full reopening on Oct. 14 was made at nearly the last minute to ensure health data supported the decision. The target was for the county to have fewer than 100 COVID cases per 100,000 residents.

“We had two back-to-back reports [that gave us] the green light for faceto-face instruction,” Looney said. “I’m thankful we stayed true to [our] commitment of letting the data drive the decision-making process.”

Despite health data that indicates an improving situation, thousands of parents opted to keep their kids home. Many took to social media to challenge the health data and the decision to reopen.

Fulton Schools extends superintendent’s contract

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON — The Fulton County Board of Education expressed its confidence in the district’s leadership by unanimously approving a contract extension for Superintendent Mike Looney through 2023.

The three-year contract is the maximum length a school superintendent can be under contract in Georgia. Historically, the Fulton County School Board has maintained a three-year rolling contract for its superintendents.

The extension made no others changes to Looney’s initial contract in June 2019 when he was hired. That contract provided Looney with a benefits and salary package of nearly $400,000 a year, placing him among the highest paid superintendents in Georgia’s 189 public school districts.

In announcing the contract extension on Oct. 13, School Board President Julia Bernath praised Looney for navigating the state’s fourth largest school district through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is clear through this tumultuous time that Dr. Looney’s guidance was critical to the stability and success of the district,” Bernath said. “With all the ups and downs, it was important for the board to confirm that district leadership remain consistent through the transition period back to education under nonCOVID circumstances.”

Last week, the district’s 106 schools finally opened to in-person instruction after a seven-month pause.

Stability in the leadership position has come under scrutiny in Fulton Schools in recent years. Looney is the ninth superintendent, either full time or interim, for the district over the past 25 years. Only one served longer than five years in the top position.

School District was a key factor in the board’s decision during the hiring process, according to those close to the selection.

“We have amazing students, teachers, principals, staff, parents and taxpayers, and they deserve consistent management as we focus on recovery and excelling going into the future,” Bernath said.

Milton’s ‘Haunted House on the Hill’ continues to thrill Oliver family’s display becomes Halloween staple

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — It’s creepy and it’s kooky, mysterious and spooky, it’s Milton’s “Haunted House on the Hill” and it has become a must-see attraction each October. But it is no company or amusement park behind this haunted house, just a dedicated family who love the Halloween holiday and sharing its ghoulish spirit.

Each October, Scottie and Shane Oliver’s home — at 820 Dockbridge Way in the Oxford Lakes subdivision — becomes a haven for the haunted with extensive decorations that include animatronics, a large graveyard and a bevy of other ways to chill and thrill those who dare walk up or drive by.

The “Haunted House on the Hill” has gained a passionate following that now spans nearly three decades, starting first in the Oliver’s home in Alpharetta and now in Milton.

“We have watched children who would not come up our driveway when they were kids now bringing their children to our house,” Scottie Oliver said.

Scottie’s love for Halloween began when she was a kid. She said her family always went out all for holidays, and she took a particular liking to Halloween, furthered by an annual haunted house put on by the Jaycees in her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.

When Scottie settled in Alpharetta about 28 years ago, she began the tradition of putting on the elaborate “haunted house,” and it has grown steadily since its move to Oxford Lakes in Milton.

Setting up the horde of decorations, which fill three dormers in the Oliver’s

home when stored away, is no easy task.

And only Scottie and Shane are involved in the process.

“We are both so perfectionist that we even argue about what should remain and what shouldn’t,” Scottie laughed.

The décor includes everything from a full graveyard, an animatronic Michael Meyers that has been part of the display for 28 years, trees and ghouls that come to life and Pennywise, the clown from “It,” in the sewer drain in front of the home with Georgia close by.

Most of the animatronics are bought, Scottie said, but there are plenty of unique items as well.

A crank ghost that flies around one of the windows of the home was built from scratch by Shane, who constructed a frame and pully apparatus to bring it to life.

Recently, Scottie came across a half mannequin in a charitable store and put her creativity to work, building a mourning widow covered in a black cloak who sits on a bench in the graveyard.

They all add to the expansive and intricate display.

“Some people have told us they come out five or six times in a season, and each time they say they saw something they did not notice the last time,” Scottie said. “And we take pride in it being extremely well done.”

The effort is all well worth it, not just for her love of Halloween, but the happiness it brings to others, Scottie said.

“In this neighborhood…there is a boy who came by every day, just waiting for the sun to go down,” Scottie said. “I just know he’ll never forget it as long as he lives. We love doing it.”

And the following for the haunted house has spread. Scottie said one family comes down from Tennessee each year to experience it.

“That’s what really makes our hearts swell and makes the effort worth it when people let us know how much they enjoy it,” she said. “We want people to enjoy it and experience it and come back every year.”

Those visiting the Haunted House on the Hill can either drive by or walk up, but the Oliver family asks that visitors stay off the yard and respect the neighboring homes. Scottie said the display will be active each night through October unless it is raining.

Unwrapped toys, supplied by donors, are arranged as gift options for parents to select for their kids.

“It’s hard for the children to really understand the pandemic,” York said. “But it’s even harder to understand around the holidays. They are still kids, and they want to have some sense of normalcy. And this program is one of those things that bring some sort of normalcy for a family.”

Schools: Continued from Page 4 Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones said the district supports any decision parents make for their children.

“We will honor and continue to support [families who], for whatever reason, do not want to return to face-to-face instruction,” Jones said.

He outlined the 12-step process for virtual learning designed to improve instruction and address concerns parents and teachers have expressed.

Schools are also working to support teachers as they instruct students in person and remotely. Many teachers have said the hybrid approach for in-class and virtual students is not sustainable.

School can choose from three ways to organize classes: teachers either have all remote or all face-to-face; teachers have a mix of students; and/or teachers have some classes in person and other classes with remote learners.

Because of the complexity in scheduling with the three options, parents are being asked to not change their decision from face-to-face or remote learning until next semester.

A representative for Fulton Schools said Looney will make a decision by Thanksgiving on plans for instruction next semester.

Good news feels so good these days I received a gift this afternoon, right before it was time to leave the office for the day. It was just after 5 pm, and my phone rang and a voice on the other end told me that “my son is doing so well RAY APPEN now.”

Publisher Emeritus All of a sudden, I ray@appenmediagroup.com felt like I was floating above storm clouds after months and months of darkness and now, surprisingly, bright sunlight on a clear cool day.

Good news was something I seemed to have lost, and to find it again, with no advance warning, was unexpected and deeply welcomed.

At first, I didn’t process that sentence. It didn’t make any sense. No way. There was just no way he could be talking about his son — maybe someone else. I have seen this play out way too many times to believe in the words that came through phone into my ear.

I had not asked him about his son in months because I was afraid to. He is a good friend and we have known each other for close to 30 years. At first, we would talk about his son’s progress — the successes and the stumbles — and

about this ominous monster that threatened to eat him alive. But after months and months, I began to hold back, worrying that my questions and my concern for his son were making the hurt and the pain worse for him. The amount of bad news always seemed to outweigh the good.

His son is an addict — as bad as any I have known. We have followed his sad story now for well more than a year. It is a story that I know all too well — rehab, recovery, release, relapse — rehab, recovery, release, relapse — again and again.

My friend’s children, my friend’s parents, my childhood friends, my old friends, my new friends, children of doctors, children of schoolteachers, rich ones, poor ones, young ones, old ones.

No pattern there. The drug has no favorite; it is an equal opportunity trap with no conscience, no compassion.

It’s not that I ever give up on people, but if there is one life issue that comes close in my mind to hopeless, it would be addiction. I hate it.

But to hear that his son now may have turned a corner, may have beaten his addiction, just felt like a gift to me because I knew how much of a miracle it must have felt like to my friend and his wife. And that may have been why I

was so moved. After months and months of struggling with the growing impact of this pandemic — the chaos and the feeling of increasing hopelessness — I was able to rejoice for another’s success.

Instead of obsessing about my own happiness and my own welfare for just a moment, I bathed in the glory of another’s redemption instead, and my heart swelled. Momentarily, this odious thing we are all going through, disappeared and the weight lifted.

My wife, Christina, forwarded an email to me last night that Richard Rohr had sent out. If you don’t know Richard, you may want to. Search for him on Amazon. He is a wise, cool head in any storm, and his faith, and his explanation of the role of faith in our lives, is compelling and healing to most.

Richard said that in today’s time of chaos, that “somehow, our occupation and vocation as believers in this sad time must be to first restore the Divine Center by holding it and fully occupying it ourselves.... What other power do we have now?... All else is tearing us apart.”

Richard said, “I recommend for your spiritual practice for the next four months that you impose a moratorium on exactly how much news you are subject to — hopefully not more than an hour a day of television, social

Instead, he said, “I suggest that you use this time for some form of public service, volunteerism, mystical reading from the masters, prayer — or preferably, all of the above. You have much to gain now and nothing to lose. Nothing at all. And the world - with you as the stable center - has nothing to lose. And everything to gain.”

The gift I received from my friend’s child’s recovery took me only halfway to where I need to take myself. I had nothing to do with his recovery or his redemption. The remaining half requires that I take action to help, to focus, to engage in the well-being of others around me and not drown in my own inward focus. I can do this. If I can, so can you.

Senior class of 2020 Advocacy group reminds drivers sets ACT score record to keep their focus on the road Fulton Schools’ average rises despite pandemic

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON—Fulton School System students in the class of 2020 set a district record on their ACT performance despite a spring testing season disrupted by COVID-19 and a halt to in-school learning.

The district average score of 24.4 on the 36-point scale is the highest on record for the district and continues the upward trend in scores posted for more than a decade. The overall score is also well above the state average of 21.7 and the national average of 20.6.

“Because COVID-19 disrupted education and the way we do business in so many ways, these results are more impressive than ever before,” Fulton School Board President Julia Bernath said.

The reported scores are based on 2020 high school graduates who took the ACT at some time from grades 10 to 12. In all, more than 3,100 students in Fulton’s class of 2020 took the ACT. The disruption in education due to the pandemic may have played a role in a decline in the number of students in the class of 2019 who took the ACT. In all 15 percent fewer students took the test.

Among the district’s traditional high schools, Northview High School posted the highest score with a composite average of 28.1. That score was the second highest in Georgia, bested only by pe-

Other Fulton County high schools among the top 10 out of the state’s 189 school systems were Chattahoochee (No. 5), Johns Creek and Cambridge (No. 10).

“Kudos go out to the expertise of our teachers and the achievement of our students,” said Cliff Jones, Fulton Schools Chief Academic Officer. “This growth reflects our dedication to ensuring our students are ready for college and careers.”

The ACT is a test commonly used for college admission and placement. It measures English, math, reading and science proficiency, with an optional writing section. The SAT is the other widely taken college admission test.

Historically more Georgia students have taken the SAT, but the numbers continue to grow for the ACT. In Fulton County Schools, more than half of graduating seniors take both college admission tests, according to district officials.

Alpharetta woman injured in 2008 crash leads campaign effort

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It is a message often heard and always understood — distracted driving endangers all on the road — but sometimes we need a reminder.

That is the message behind a new campaign from Molly Welch, an Alpharetta native and founder of distracted driving awareness group A Second Later.

The group is fundraising for bumper stickers and magnets reminding drivers to keep their eyes on the road, a simple message with serious implications Welch knows all too well.

In 2008, Welch was a junior at Auburn studying journalism. After visiting a friend over the weekend, she was driving back to her school when she suffered the consequences of distracted driving firsthand.

Welch took her eyes off the road to play back a recording she had made of an interview. In that momentary lapse, her car veered into oncoming traffic and was struck by a pickup truck.

The crash left Welch in a coma for weeks and with a traumatic brain injury. The incident left her nearly unable to speak, and it was three years before she could walk again.

Welch’s story has a positive outcome, though, following speech and physical therapy. She completed her bachelor’s degree four years after the crash and now works as a motivational speaker and leads initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted.

It is her hope the bumper stickers and magnets will help keep drivers’ attention on the road ahead.

“I want to see them on the back of every car, bus or truck,” Welch said.

“Like the name, ‘A Second Later,’ that’s all it takes. It’s not worth it. No conversation, no text message, it’s not worth the suffering and heartache.”

Marie Koch, owner of North Atlanta Kids Directory, became involved with Welch and the awareness campaign and emphasized the importance of the magnets as a reminder to stay focused while driving.

“It’s a nice reminder,” Koch said.

to families, just because someone was putting on mascara while driving. It’s not just texting, it’s eating, being distracted by music or anything else.”

Welch said she hopes the stickers and magnets will raise awareness and help her get the message to others.

Funds collected through A Second Later will be used to spread the word on billboards and in movie theaters.

It will also help Welch to travel to other states to speak. Her message is geared to all ages. She has spoken before senior resource groups and to kids in fifth grade.

“Distracted driving can affect any age,” Welch said. “Kids definitely should make sure they are not a distraction, and make sure parents have a cell phone mount so they’re not holding the phone or distracted by it.”

General store aims to be outdoorsy gathering place in downtown Roswell

By MATT BRUCE news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — When Bruno Costanzo would take his wife Julie out to dinner downtown, he grew restless accompanying her afterward when she window shopped at nearby boutiques.

The problem?

All of the shops seemed to cater to women.

Constanzo saw a void in storefronts tailored to the area’s male clientele and he sought to fill it.

The solution, he hopes, is Roswell General and Outfitters at 35 Woodstock Road, a stone’s throw from Canton Drive in the heart of downtown Roswell.

“I think there was a huge need for a guy place out on Canton Street,” Bruno Costanzo said.

The new business, which opened in June, is a partnership between two married couples that live across the street from each other. Bruno and Julie Costanzo joined with their longtime neighbors Robin and Ken Moncrief.

Robin Moncrief is a longtime Realtor who sells houses for Atlanta Fine Homes. Ken is a traveling food plant designer by trade. Meanwhile Bruno Costanzo has owned his own general contracting company in town for the past 15 years. Julie works as a schoolteacher.

The owners envision the store as a gathering place where people can hang out, have a beer and make connections.

They throw weekend grill parties on the front deck when professional chefs are invited to do casual cook sessions and share their craftsmanship on the Big Green Egg. “This is a community center,” Ken Moncrief said. “We encourage people to

The store is a throwback to campground general stores. But it has a modern twist. It’s anchored by two popular products with loyal customer bases — Big Green Egg and Yeti — serving as a platinum dealer for both brands.

Hats, BBQ sauces, housewares, coolers, charcoal, CBD products, thermoses and camping backpacks are other mainstays.

Robin Moncrief and Julie Costanza added the women’s touch, bringing in scented candles, lotions, penny candies and clothing for female customers.

The store seeks out local businesses and entrepreneurs to partner with, so many of the items are homegrown products. The themes are outdoor living, uncommon goods and family fun.

The couples bought the two-bedroom

home in January and planned to hire contractors to retrofit it. But COVID-19 forced them to scrap those plans. Instead, they did the work themselves. The foursome tore apart the home’s interior and rebuilt it, revamping the building from wood-planked floor boards to the vaulted ceilings.

“Since none of us were going to work, the four of us got on our hands and knees, gutted the whole building and re-did it in those few months,” Robin Moncrief said.

The store fittingly opened on Father’s Day this year.

The home had been a beauty salon, a day care, served as the offices of a dynamite shop, and was possibly even a ski store. All four said it was once a house of disrepute known for drug activity.

The couples spent 16 weeks between

February and June reshaping the building, chipping away at its past notoriety one board at a time.

Neighboring business owners, runners, bicyclists and pedestrians in the neighborhood witnessed the old home’s daily evolution as Ken, Bruno, Robin and Julie carried out the renovations.

“This is really like an egg to all these people, and now we’ve hatched it,” Ken Moncrief said.

The crew started doing their repairs shortly before COVID-19 reached the U.S. The pandemic bogged down supply, making it a hurdle to get items in the store. As companies shut down or scaled back, products took longer to be delivered. Julie Costanzo said Big Green Egg merchandise nearly didn’t make it in time for the store’s grand opening.

“It was very frightening,” Julie Costanzo said. “But we’ve been busy.

And the community has been so responsive.”

She noted another ironic twist of the pandemic. It slowed down business from the owners’ respective day jobs, allowing them to focus on repairs.

“It gave us the time to do this work,” she said. “So, in a way it was a blessing because we were able to build this store.”

Wood from a fallen tree at Barrington Hall, one of Roswell’s oldest homes, was used to build the store’s counter and is prominent throughout the shop. Bruno Costanzo said he hopes the store can provide locals relief from the pandemic.

“We took a horrible building at a horrible time and made it a beautiful structure,” he said. “At a time when the community [is] falling apart, they can come here and meet and socialize with one another..”

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment.

To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is

everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive.

Premier: Continued from Page 16 I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s.

She didn’t marry my Grandfather until

her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is. Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

Eagles upend rival Alpharetta in region opener

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Milton extended two significant streaks Friday night.

With their 35-20 win, the Eagles increased their number of consecutive region wins to 14 and their consecutive victories over rival Alpharetta to five.

It was the Region 5-7A opener for both squads.

The matchup was the first in-region meeting of the teams since 2011 with Alpharetta’s move to Class 7A this season.

The rivals traded blows through the first half, but a strong performance from Milton’s defense and plenty of offensive firepower allowed the Eagles to take control in the second half.

“That’s definitely a heck of a way to open up region play with a crosstown

rival,” Milton head coach Adam Clack said. “With losing the summer and starting late, it still feels early in the season, even though we have a few games under our belt. We are still trying to catch our stride, but I felt like things came together for us tonight.”

Milton (4-1, 1-0) entered having surrendered just 8.8 points per contest, the lowest average in all of Class 7A. Though Alpharetta (1-3, 0-1) found paydirt three times in the first half, Clack said his team’s defensive performance was impressive.

“We hadn’t been in that situation much, giving up scores, but if you look closer, some of it was big penalties, a heck of a throw and catch by [Alpharetta quarterback Ben Guthrie], and sometimes you can’t defend the perfect play,” Clack said.

Alpharetta struck on their first drive.

A late hit call on Milton and a thirddown conversion by Alpharetta set up a 2-yard touchdown rush from sophomore Jake Gil. Milton responded quickly though, building a 21-7 lead with three unanswered scores.

On the Eagles’ ensuing possession, Milton appeared to set up a screen pass to running back Jordan McDonald, but instead, quarterback Devin Farrell connected with a wide-open LT Overton, the top sophomore defensive prospect in the nation, for a touchdown. “[Overton] is so gifted of an athlete… and his football IQ is off the charts,” Clack said. “We wanted to run some multiple tight end sets, and he is a threat in the pass game.”

The Eagles took the lead for good early in the second quarter with the first of Jordan McDonald’s three touchdown runs. Clack said it was “huge” to have McDonald, who missed the McEachern game, back from injury.

with a 49-yard pass before avoiding pressure to rush the ball in from 18-yards out.

“He really gives the offense that explosive capability,” Clack said.

Milton gave up free real estate on Alpharetta’s ensuing drive with facemask and pass interference penalties.

Alpharetta took advantage, ultimately converting a fourth-and-3 to set up an 8-yard touchdown run from Guthrie.

The Raiders scored again before the half on a perfect pitch-and-catch from Guthrie to Matteo Carriere down the sideline. However, a botched PAT play kept Milton in the lead, 21-20.

Alpharetta’s two scores late in the first half gave them momentum coming out of the locker room, but Milton’s defense turned the tide when play resumed.

Milton cornerback Bryce Thornton intercepted Guthrie on Alpharetta’s opening possession of the second half, the first of two picks for the sophomore, to set up McDonald’s second rushing score of the game, pushing the margin to 28-20. “[The secondary] played well,” Clack said. “There were a lot of 50/50 and deeper balls. There was a lot of space to cover and [Thornton] was always in the right spot. I talked to Bryce after the game about how proud I was of him. He got beat early, and the average person might let that get into their feelings a little bit, but he came out in the second half and played incredibly.”

Milton’s defense forced a threeand-out on the Raiders’ next drive, and Farrell again showed his rushing ability with two evasive rushes to set up McDonald’s third touchdown late in the third quarter.

Alpharetta had three more possession on the night, but two ended with a turnover on downs, and Thornton’s second pick in the final minute iced the game.

With Friday’s region and rivalry win, Clack is pleased with where his team stands at the midseason.

“The defense came out early and they have been really hot and have been super impressive,” he said.

“They can be trouble for any offense.

With the offense, things should start clicking by the time you get into region play, and I think we were at that point tonight. We’re ascending.”

Both teams continue region play Oct. 23 against Cherokee County teams. The Eagles return home to play Etowah, while Alpharetta will be on the road against Woodstock.

Cambridge shuts out Centennial for region win

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CLASS 7A Roswell 21, Etowah 14 Roswell played its 765th game in program history Friday night, and it was special. The Hornets not only posted a 21-14 win over Etowah to open Region 5-6A play, it was also the first time they ever faced a former head coach as the head coach of an opposing team. Matt Kemper, who led Roswell from 2017 to 2019, had to take the loss at the helm in Woodstock Friday.

Despite five turnovers, the Hornets managed to outlast Etowah.

Roswell broke the stalemate early in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Robbie Roper to Marquis Willis. The Hornets had a goal-line stand to keep their lead following Willis’ score, but Etowah knotted the game with a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Hornets took a 14-7 lead into the half behind a fourth-and-goal touchdown run from junior Ryan Stephens.

Roswell extended the margin to 21-7 with a touchdown on their opening possession of the second half, a seven-play, 72-yard drive capped off by a Ryan Hill rushing score.

Though the Hornets struggled with turnover throughout the night, sophomore cornerback Ethan Nation continued to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Nation had two picks in the fourth quarter for his sixth and seventh interceptions in five games.

Etowah did make it interesting with a touchdown in the final minute, but Roswell held on to secure the victory.

Roswell (5-0, 1-0) is set to take on another unbeaten, Cherokee (6-0, 1-0) in a battle of top-10 ranked teams Oct. 23.

Phillip Michael Collins to extend the Bears’ advantage to 28-0.

Collins found paydirt again midway through the third quarter with a 34yard touchdown, and the Bears added a safety while continuing to hold Centennial scoreless.

The Bears (2-3, 1-1) are on the road again Oct. 23 and will take on Sequoyah.

Centennial (0-5, 0-3) has a bye Oct. 23 before returning to region play against River Ridge on Oct. 30.
