Police arrest man for stealing alcohol MILTON, Ga. — Police arrested a man Sept. 5 for shoplifting alcohol from the Walmart on Windward Parkway.

The loss prevention officer stopped a man for taking a Mike’s Hard Lemonade and concealing it under his shirt.

While police spoke with the man, officers were alerted that the man had nine prior shoplifting incidents.

The man, later identified as 45-yearold Marcus Jenkins of Atlanta, was arrested without incident for felony shoplifting.

Man alerted to fraud by letter in mail MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man called police Sept. 8 after he received a letter about a credit card he did not apply for.

The letter said the credit card the man had applied for had been declined.

The man then checked his credit report and saw two other suspicious accounts in September and August, one with a bank and another with a phone company.

A representative from the phone company said the man needed to file a police report about the fraud.

Vehicle abandoned in resident’s driveway MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating a Sept. 7 incident in which a man found an abandoned car next to his damaged mailbox after he left for a grocery store trip.

The man left his house on Pony Tail Road for about 20 minutes. When he came back, he saw that his brick mailbox was destroyed and on the ground.

The man also found an unknown car in his driveway with the key in the ignition and the dashboard lights left on. The left, front side of the car was severely damaged, police said.

Police tracked the car’s owner to a house down the road but were unable to get in contact with the owner.

The loss prevention officer called police after he saw the man walk out of the store without paying for the item.

Police stopped the car the man had left in and were alerted that the man was a repeat shoplifter. The man had been previously charged 11 times for stealing from local stores.

The man, later identified as 67-yearold Marvin Brooks from Atlanta, was arrested for shoplifting and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

License plate check turns up wanted man

MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating a Sept. 7 incident in which a man was reported to have stolen alcohol from the Kroger on Ga. 9.

Security footage showed a man, wearing a hat and black glasses, enter the store at 2:15 p.m. and place a bottle of tequila in his backpack. The man then bought a can of beer with cash and left without paying for the tequila.

Almost two hours later, the same man was seen reentering the store and placing a bottle of whiskey in his backpack. He then, once again, payed for a can of beer with cash and left without paying for the whiskey.

The total value of the stolen items was placed at $100.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man Sept. 1 after officers checked his license plate and received an alert that he had three outstanding war rants.

Officers had been patrolling on Mansell Road, when they checked the license plate of a car in front of them. They received an alert that the driver had three outstanding warrants.

Police stopped the man and confirmed that he was wanted out of Fulton, Gwinnett and Clayton counties.

Officers arrested the man, 35-yearold John Stegall of Atlanta, without incident on warrant.

Two students arrested for racing on highway ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested two students Sept. 3 after they were seen racing each other on Ga. 400.

Police were patrolling the northbound lanes that evening near Mansell Road, when an officer noticed a car pass by at a fast rate of speed and quickly change lanes. Another car accelerated toward the first car soon after.

Police pursued the cars and saw the drivers reach over 100 mph while making erratic lane changes.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Sept. 3 incident in which two women stole $1,400 worth of clothing from the Victoria’s Secret at North Point Mall.

The manager said at 2 p.m. that day, two women entered the store and filled their bags with merchandise. They then left without paying. The missing items include 35 T-shirts, five sweaters and five sports bras.

The manager provided police with security footage of the incident.

Restaurant loses $2,000 to fake equipment invoice ROSWELL, Ga. — The manager of the CiCi’s Pizza Restaurant on Alpharetta Highway called police Sept. 1 after he realized the company had been scammed out of thousands of dollars.

The manager reported receiving a call that day that he needed to provide payment within 45 minutes for a piece of equipment the company had bought or they would incur a late fee. The caller demanded $2,000.

The manager sent another employee to wire money to an address in Mexico.

He became suspicious of the transaction and realized it was a scam when he continued to receive calls.

Milton officials propose 2020 budget

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council put the proposed 2020 budget under its microscope Sept. 9 and is set to vote on the draft Sept. 23.

The total budget is set at $42.9 million and balanced by dipping into the city’s fund balance to the tune of $1.6 million. The general fund revenues are expected to be just under $30 million and the city anticipates $6.5 million in transportation sales tax revenues.

The general fund budget is around 2 percent lower than the amended 2019 budget at $31.6 million. The city has proposed a 3 percent hike for employee salaries and has allocated an additional $643,000 for new staff, including two police officers, two firefighters, the addition of a part-time special events coordinator and other positions.

Not renewing the contract will save the city a $227,000 payment to Alpharetta, but it has forced some residents to pay additional fees for programming Milton does not offer. A proposal in the 2020 budget would allocate $50,000 to provide a cost-savings to residents who must now pay out-of-city fees for the Alpharetta programs.

According to the city’s budget book, the stipends will be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis, with reimbursement limits. Eligible programs will be

suggested to the City Council by the city’s Parks and Recreation staff and advisory board. Milton has also proposed a $5,000 scholarship for residents to use toward joining city programs.

Many residents have also been anticipating the opening of the park at the former Milton Country Club property, and the 2020 budget has assigned funding for repairs and updates to open its gates. The city will use transfers from the 2019 budget, revenues from cell tower fees and leftover reserves from the park’s master planning process to push funding to $934,000.

Milton also has dedicated $650,000 to increase the city’s active parks.

Officials anticipate the city will receive around $2.8 million of TSPLOST funds for the construction of trails and sidewalks.

The proposed budget also earmarks another $1.1 million for added sidewalks.

Maintenance and operating initiatives in the budget include funding for the city’s five-year strategic plan, an assessment of the city’s departments, workout equipment for the fire department and a Joyful Soles camp manager. Milton has also proposed setting aside $125,000 for a traffic count study and to research whether to reduce speed limits within the city.

curve, Milton adopted an ordinance at its Sept. 9 meeting that will give the city some say on its deployment.

The new state law limits local control and expedites the process for telecommunications providers to install small cell towers and other equipment needed for the 5G rollout. City Attorney Ken Jarrard said the law means Milton’s right of ways are “fair game” for the installation of new utility poles, the placement of equipment on existing poles or the replacement of structures that cannot support the 5G equipment.

“The expectation is, they are going to be able to come into the city of Milton, they are going to be able to apply for a permit, they are going to be able to pay a fee, and so long as they meet the requirements of the state law and our code, they get a permit,” Jarrard said. “This law is comprehensive, it almost takes the place of most building codes with respect to the small wireless facilities.”

While the city’s hands are mostly tied on where companies can install the equipment in Milton’s right of way, the law does give cities some leeway. The small cell ordinance passed at last week’s meeting takes advantage of those provisions.

The ordinance requires a telecom

company to notify the city at least 30 days before applying for a small cell tower permit. It also states that companies will inform the city of how many towers it expects to deploy in a 24-month period and a timeframe for completion.

“The ordinance demands it,” Jarrard said.

Milton will also charge companies the maximum fees and rates allowable under the law. Providers will be charged a one-time fee of $100 for the co-location of equipment on an existing pole and $100 per year. For a new pole, companies will be charged a $1,000 one-time fee and $250 annual fee.

Jarrard said higher rates were originally proposed by the Legislature but those figures were ultimately lowered.

“The General Assembly wanted this done, and they wanted to make the environment where the rollout for [5G] would not be stopped by high rates,” he said.

Jarrard said the city’s options for denying a permit are “very technical” under the law. He said only in situations such as a pole providing sightline issues for drivers or the equipment overstressing a pole could the city deny the permit.

Community Conversation focuses on suicide prevention

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Suicide is a difficult topic to discuss, but it is absolutely necessary to have the conversation. That was the emphasis of “Suicide: A Community Conversation” held at Milton City Hall on Sept. 10, where a panel of experts tackled the issue of suicide before a packed room of adults and teens. The event was put on by the city and Summit Counseling.

Though the popular belief still remains that discussing suicide can lead to people taking their lives, the panel stressed the importance of breaking that stigma.

“If Milton is to be the best place to call home, we have to be able to discuss difficult topics like suicide,” Mayor Joe Lockwood said. “Talking is the first step toward prevention.”

The same message was shared by Lauralyn Mustaki and Britt Beene, who both lost teens to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death for teens according to the CDC. Mustaki’s daughter, Ivey, took her own life in March 2018 at the age of 18. Beene’s son, Reagan, took his life in 2013 while a freshman at Cambridge High School.

Each parent shared their stories, and they highlighted the differences that can lead to a teen choosing to take their own life, whether it is due to a longstanding trauma or a reaction to a distressing occurrence.

Megan Barfield, a therapist at Summit Counseling, said parents should be on the lookout for a disconnection by their son or daughter, or if their teen feels they are a burden on their family.

Teens should also be mindful of changes to their friend’s behavior.

“If you see a friend who is acting different, or maybe you are just worried about them or they said something that is worrying to you, acknowledge that you hear it and that you are there for them by caring for them, and then tell someone,” Barfield said.

Local Boy Scouts lead Cambridge 9/11 memorial Troop 1459 takes over organizing memorial honoring lives lost.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The tradition of placing 2,997 U.S. flags at Cambridge High School continued this year under new guidance with local Boy Scout Troop 1459 taking over the ceremony that honors those lost on September 11, 2001.

The memorial was started by former Cambridge student Caroline Willis in 2012. After Caroline graduated, her younger sister, Liz, continued the tradition. With Liz’s graduation in 2018, the Willis family has passed organization of the event to Troop 1459, whose members say they are honored to take over the memorial.

“One of they key things that scouting really wants to teach youth is a sense of duty to self, duty to country and community service,” said Assistant Scoutmaster John Leekley. “This is a great way to support the community, teach these young men great values and give them ownership of something that is very important to people throughout the community.”

The memorial also serves as a way to help the Scouts understand the impact of 9/11. While those old enough to remember the day know its gravity firsthand, none of the Scouts of Troop 1459 were alive when the attacks took place.

However, the flag placement showed them the importance and effect of 9/11.

“When people came out to place flags, we handed them 10 flags and name cards of victims,” Leekley said. “That allowed us to teach the Scouts that we are not just placing 2,997 flags — each flag represents a person. That connection, especially reading those names as they placed a flag, really impacted them. It also showed them that flag has endured for over 200 years, and it represents very significant things, including the sacrifice people have made over the years, including the attacks on 9/11.”

The memorial also gave Scouts a chance to work alongside the North Fulton community members, some of whom were directly impacted by the attacks.

“Some people in the community came out and they requested specific name cards of people they knew, whether it was an uncle, parent, cousin or friend,” Leekley said. “Although these Scouts weren’t alive when 9/11 occurred, they were able to interact with people in their community who were directly impacted,

“As a troop we are very thankful and grateful to be able to host this event every year,” Leekley said. “We appreciate the opportunity given to us by the Willis family, Cambridge High and the support of the community, and we look forward to hosting again next year.”

Task force makes 24 arrests on sex crime charges

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga.—Twenty-four people were arrested as a result of an undercover investigation coordinated by local authorities.

“Operation Just Cause” was a fourday operation directed by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office High Technology Crime unit that began Sept. 5 and resulted in the arrest of 23 men and 1 woman on sex crimes including computer or electronic pornography and human trafficking.

Two of the individuals were registered sex offenders.

According to the sheriff’s office, additional charges may be forthcoming.

“The goal of Operation Just Cause

was to arrest persons who communicate with children online and then travel to meet them for the purpose of having sex,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said. “Additionally, the operation targeted those that are willing to exploit children by purchasing sex with a minor.”

Thirteen additional law enforcement agencies participated in “Operation Just Cause” as members of the Georgia ICAC Task Force. The agencies assisting in the operation included: Johns CreekAlpharetta-Forsyth County Drug Task Force, Alpharetta Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Police Department, GBI, GBI-Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center, Gwinnett County Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Johns Creek

Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 65, traveled from areas around north Georgia and other states with the alleged intent to meet a child for sex, officials said.

Online child predators visit chat rooms and websites on the internet, find children, begin conversations with them, introduce sexual content and arrange a meeting with the children for the purpose of having sex.

Over the course of the operation, a number of cases were established that met the threshold for arrest, and 24 resulted in arrests.

Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 65, traveled from areas around north Georgia and other states with the alleged intent to meet a child for sex, officials said.

One of the individuals that was arrested was in possession of suspected illegal drugs.

Thirty-one mobile phones were seized as evidence during the operation. One person identified in the operation was a current state prisoner in the Department of Corrections system using an illegally possessed phone smuggled inside the prison, according to the statement.

Good intentions are not good deeds

I believe this is still true. We greatly underestimate the power of GOOD. But nowhere is the evidence more undeniable than the 75-year legacy of Heifer International. How did it begin?

In 1938, at the end of the Spanish Civil War, a relief worker, Dan West, started his movement “Not a cup – but a cow!” His real success came from the understanding that hope is not a strategy, and people must unify to create abundance instead of competing for limited resources. Once individuals achieve success, they never choose the insecurity of the past. This creates a common language of change that permeates a region and stabilizes it.

In South Korea, for example, the Korean Ministry of Agriculture estimates that 50 percent of all poultry in South Korea today are descended from 70,000 hatchlings supplied by Heifer after the Korean War. In Cambodia, Heifer has spread to half of the country, partnering not just to provide livestock but guidance and encouragement through their “cornerstones.” This new doctrine empowers women greatly. The farm-to-market project has found that alcoholism, domestic violence and disability can no longer hold back the women there. The majority of my own philanthropic efforts are intentionally domestic; intended to alter the opportunities of the less fortunate in America.

But, I believe that the most enduring way to influence peace in the world is by fostering true Independence here — and abroad. Heifer has a unique payit-forward “contract” that puts all local participants in the position of bringing their own neighbors out of poverty.

If the local program is to raise say.... chickens, the first hatchlings born to a member are given to a neighbor, then his first to a neighbor, and so on. This is done in a very public ceremony.

together which fosters real friendships as well as the unanimous application of best veterinary practices. This new interdependence continues without any U.S. involvement stabilizing locations experiencing desperate circumstances that could otherwise grow into social chaos and the need for people to migrate to survive.

When the llama population in Peru was declining seriously due to overbreeding, Heifer helped introduce a new breeding stock able to thrive on indigenous vegetation. This practice completely revitalized herds to full vigor in less than 5 years. Without llamas, life in Peru is not sustainable for at least 40 percent of the population.

yields local funding for schools, homes, medical care and expanded sustainable feeding projects. What has quietly been accomplished in the 75 years Heifer has operated is nothing short of spectacular!

Starting with community groups of 25, the work now reaches into the many thousands.

My favorite example is of a Kenyan community where Heifer came in to help boost milk yields to the dairy farmers. This community ended up creating a co-op producing butter to sell to local markets and hotels. As a result of that success, education has really taken off, and the first medical doctor has risen from a community where 25 years ago no one could read.

Ranjana Shrestha, another project participant, has risen to become an officially elected member of the parliament in Nepal.

In 2002, Heifer celebrated the “passing on the gift” ceremony of their 3 millionth animal. When people anywhere are given an opportunity to learn and put that education into practice, transformation takes place. Small scale farmers can feed the world and build stronger communities in a way that is permanent. Heifer’s value-based leadership mentors and inspires to dramatically impact every area of life when they enter a region. My interest in their work has continued to grow through my life and has affected my understanding of what is truly possible in the future of our small planet.

Willstock music festival raises money, awareness to prevent teen suicide

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Will to Live foundation held its signature event, Willstock Music Festival, Sept. 7 at Northview High School.

The Will to Live Foundation was created

by Johns Creek parents in 2010 after the suicide of their son, Will Trautwein. Will was 15 years old, a freshman and athlete at Northview High School.

Will’s friends and family turned their pain into action by creating the foundation, which provides training to teachers across the country to recognize signs of suicide. The group also supports counseling nonprofits and grants scholarships.

Because of Will’s love of music, a Woodstock-style festival seemed like the perfect way to honor Will’s legacy while raising money and awareness for teen mental health, Will’s father John Trautwein said.

“All of my son Will’s best friends got together, and the first thing they wanted to do was a version of Woodstock,” John said. “This was literally within a week or two of when Will died. So as you can imagine, it’s very near and dear to me, but it’s also very near and dear to his friends.”

The festival included bands with students from Northview, Johns Creek High School, Alpharetta High and Cambridge.

Along with an annual 5K, the music festival is the biggest fundraiser for the Will to Live Foundation. Before music even began, the group had raised more than $30,000 for mental health education and community programs.

“It’s money raised by kids, during fun events where they deliver hope to each other, and then it goes to educate the parents, teachers, coaches and trusted adults in their lives,” John said.

Household incomes show no growth in 2018 A recent article in the Wall Street Journal kind of shocked me when it stated that American incomes remained essentially flat in 2018.

The median household income was $63,179, according to the article. That’s up only 0.9 percent over the prior year.

It’s hard to swallow, because the unemployment rate has hovered at or below 4 percent, which economists figure is what they would consider full-pool. This means everyone who wants a job, has one. With unemployment so low, early last year economists were concerned with how our economy was going to grow. If there are no workers to add to your company, how can you produce more of your goods and services?

Historically, when this happens, necessity becomes the mother of invention, and we’ve had advances in technology that have made our companies and our workers more productive. One worker is more able to produce more goods or services. In the late 1800s, the idea of assembly lines and using machinery to build things propelled how many units a worker could produce in a given day or hour. In the very late 1900s, computers and software enabled workers to organize and be incredibly more efficient, and businesses more organized. In just the last 15 years, smart phones have made all of us way more productive in some ways (and unproductive in other ways — monitoring your Facebook probably isn’t helping your company).

The thing about smart phones is that you can essentially do everything that your computer can do from almost anywhere in the world. And for many, they

So when a new technology is invented and woven into the workforce, to increase production, companies tend to spend more on integrating that technology and less on increasing wages.

Last year, according to Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist for Northern Trust, employers were faced with the prospect of having few workers to pull from, so instead focused on integrating better, existing technologies and improving efficiencies within their organizations and industries.

From most accounts, employers are certainly working harder to attract employees away from other companies, and they’re spending more on making their work environment seem more attractive than their competitors.

Around Atlanta, companies are happy to pay higher rents to be in offices that are located in more walkable neighborhoods with restaurants and shops close by. They are spending more making their offices more entertaining and hospitable and fun. A commercial realtor told me that employers are finding that the millennial workforce seems to be more attracted to companies that have more compatible work environments than they are to companies that offer higher wages.

The conundrum in the housing market is that you have a situation where wage growth was relatively flat last year, but home values increased by over 5 percent. So while wages are staying the same, the cost of living is going up, and residents are having to put a larger percentage of their take-home earnings toward living expenses. This will mean less

money to go toward shopping, eating out, putting money toward savings, and more usage of credit cards and equity lines.

According to a Bloomberg report, U.S. credit card debt closed out 2018 at a record $870 billion.

Normally, if you believe in the free market always balancing itself out, you would expect to see fewer people going out and buying homes, which would slow the increase in home values. And eventually wage increases would outpace home values. But the issue here in Atlanta is that our economy is so hot, we are still creating over 60,000 jobs a year, and more than 80,000 people a year are moving here. So they’ll still be buying houses, if they can find any.

I have no idea where we are headed.

If I did, I’d be retired and traveling the world with my family and a very impressive entourage of happy helpers. The market will invent something to stave off this trend, or the problem will exacerbate and employers here will increase wages to get above the local trend, or nothing will be invented and employers will not do anything to increase wages and something else will happen. Either way, here we are.

An interview with Dr. Taylor

By Alyssa McNamara I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win and again this week after his 3rd consecutive Best of win to talk about his continued success. The following is a compilation of both interviews.

Last year’s interview took place while Dr. Taylor held his newborn son Broderick or “Bodi.” As we discussed his practice’s progress, he laughed at the “happy chaos” that is his home life. Even without a newborn in his arms, he is as I remember him – warm and likeable. I looked back at my notes from my last interview and my observations still apply: “After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown.

He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.”

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta yet again! You must be proud. It is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone several years in a row!

To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much!

You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons.

Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patientcentered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe that the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated

into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! We have the same amazing staff that we did last year with one excellent addition. Given that, we are a small practice with only 8 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We have been open over two and half years now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something that you feel sets you apart?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred to other specialists or simply not be handled, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with a lab that allows me to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Could you please comment on your background and experience?

Dr. Taylor: I believe my experience is notable given my number of years in

practice. Surgeons gain experience and perfect their skills through research and practice. As a result of training at very busy institutions then working for some of the busiest practices in Florida, I have performed over ten thousand dermatologic procedures. I completed my fellowship 5 years ago. Having been a Mohs surgeon at the University of Florida and also working in private practice in Florida before moving to Atlanta to be closer to family, I was lucky enough to take care of a great many patients who had extremely large cancers and required extensive reconstruction. As you might imagine, Florida residents need considerable dermatologic care. I am honored to take care of people with genuine need and am lucky to have been prepared by

outstanding mentors who trained me.

Upon starting my own practice here in Alpharetta, I already had the volume of experience usually found with a Mohs surgeon who has been in practice much longer.

Exquisite Living owner, Zaina Wuest, and her team, are honored to be voted Best Furniture/Home Décor in the 2019 Best of North Atlanta contest. In just a few short years, Zaina Wuest has transformed her side gig as an interior designer to a thriving furniture and home design business.

Exquisite Living opened its doors in 2016 with a store on Atlanta Highway.

The space has since more than doubled from 3,200 square feet to 8,200 square feet. In 2017, Wuest left her corporate job to run the store full time.

This year, Exquisite Living opened its second location in Alpharetta City Center, right across from City Hall. The stylish furniture and elegant décor are right at home among the boutiques of the downtown.

Wuest credits her company’s fast growth and success to its superior customer service and the bonds she forms with her clients.

“It’s about the relationship and not feeling like you’ve gone somewhere and somebody just tried to sell you something,” she said.

“It’s one of the things we do differently, which is the reason our design side has done tremendously,” Wuest said.

“Most furniture stores offer complementary design service, but that’s just a sales person going in there and seeing what inventory they can pull out of the store.”

The designers work with the sales team and the client to help the homeowners come up with a plan for their space.

“We discuss with the client what their priorities are, their budget,” Wuest said.

“We’re really big on respecting budget and timeline.”

When she set out to build Exquisite Living, Wuest studied the factors that usually prevent someone from hiring a professional designer. Many shoppers feel pressured by sales people who put artificial deadlines on the design process, she said.

Wuest then set out to eliminate those hang-ups from her business model.

“The client can take a look at [the plan] and say ‘Today I have budget for two rooms. Six months down the road when my husband gets his bonus, I can do upstairs,’ and so on and so forth,” She said. “I think that’s a big differentiator for us. No one feels pressured.”

The designs give homeowners confidence in how their rooms will turn out.

“Once they get the plan they feel comfortable because they can visualize what their home is going to look like and now the decision is up to them when they want to do it and how much they want to spend,” she said.

This strategy of putting service before sales has proven fruitful, with many clients returning to Exquisite Living for multiple rooms or even multiple houses.

Wuest said developing trust with the

homeowners is the most valuable currency for her.

With a new location in the heart of Alpharetta, Wuest is looking for new ways to have Exquisite Living be involved with the community. She is researching ways the business can help local philanthropic groups.

“I really want to decorate for those children that suffer from cancer and have just a few days left, where they can be in a room that they enjoy and the room that they always wanted,” she said.

Another way the company is getting involved in the community, Exquisite Living recently partnered with Appen Media Group to hold a room makeover sweepstakes. One lucky Herald newspaper reader won a $5,000 room redesign.

“Every business ought to do something like this, especially when you’re such a neighborhood kind of business,” Wuest said. “I’d like to continue finding opportunities like that to do more.”

My neighbor’s home sold quickly and for more than asking price, but not mine. Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter.

Storms wreak havoc on local football games

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Thunderstorms and lightning delayed, postponed or canceled several local high school football games Sept. 13. Only two local games, Blessed Trinity vs. Benedictine and South Forsyth’s matchup with South Gwinnett, were completed.

Matchups between West Forsyth and Roswell, Forsyth Central and Denmark, and Lambert versus Peachtree Ridge were all cancelled due to weather.

Because these games are non-region matchups, they are not required to be played to completion.

However, region games must be played under GHSA rules, which postponed most local contests.

All Region 7-AAAAAA games were delayed. Three games — Dunwoody vs.

Cambridge, Centennial vs. Pope and Chattahoochee vs. Northview — were played Saturday, Sept. 14. Centennial played an early afternoon game and fell to Pope while Cambridge and Chattahoochee fell in Saturday night contests.

Johns Creek and North Atlanta decided to reschedule their matchup for Monday, Sept. 16.

All Class-A Private local games scheduled for Friday were postponed until Sept 16. Those games include Fellowship Christian vs. Walker, Mount Pisgah vs. Whitefield Academy, St. Francis vs.

Lakeview Academy and Athens Christian at Pinecrest Academy.

The following games were played to completion over the weekend: South Forsyth 35, South Gwinnett 28 South Forsyth took down South Gwinnett for the second straight year and improved to 2-0 on the road this season.

South Forsyth took an early lead with a double pass touchdown throw to Tre Green on their first possession and added another score before the end of the first to lead 13-0. The Comets responded with two unanswered scores in the second quarter to take their first lead of the game, but the War Eagles scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to reclaim the lead with under five seconds left in the first half.

South gave up a long score on the Comets’ opening possession of the second half, but the PAT failed. A Cameron Schurr touchdown grab pushed the score to 28-20, and with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, South Forsyth put its lead at two scores with another trip to the end zone.

After a weather delay, play resumed with under four minutes remaining.

Several first half turnovers from Centennial allowed Pope to build a 27-14 lead at the half. The Greyhounds added two long touchdowns in the third and a rushing touchdown early in the fourth to push the lead to 48-14.

Though Centennial found the end zone twice in the fourth, Pope’s lead was too much to overcome.

The Knights were led by Julian Nixon and Richard Shaw who both had two touchdown receptions.

Centennial (0-3, 0-1) will look for their first win of the season at home Sept. 20 against Cambridge (1-2, 0-1).

Dunwoody 21, Cambridge 19 Dunwoody took a tight win over Cambridge in both squads’ Region 7-AAAAAA opener.

A touchdown rush from Phillip Michael Collins gave the Bears an early 6-0 lead, but the Wildcats scored three unanswered touchdowns to take a 21-6 lead into the half.

Collins led Cambridge’s comeback with a touchdown midway through the third, but the PAT was blocked, leaving the Bears trailing 21-12. Collins again found the end zone with five minutes remaining in the game to set up a thrilling finish.

Cambridge’s offense was back on the ball in the final minutes looking for the go-ahead score, but a field goal attempt with under two minutes remaining was no good and the Wildcats held on.

Dunwoody quarterback Davis Ledoyen led the Wildcats with 333 yards passing with two touchdowns. Tyler Eith had 14 receptions for 213 yards with a touchdown. Cevon Mitchell added a rushing score for Dunwoody.

Northview 42, Chattahoochee 35 Northview prevailed in a thrilling backyard brawl over Chattahoochee Saturday night to open its Region 7-AAAAAA slate with a win.

The Titans led 28-7 at the half behind two touchdowns from quarterback Beau Lark, but Hooch fought back in the second half to set up a dramatic finish.

Chattahoochee quarterback Jahmal Smith threw a long touchdown pass early in the third quarter and cut the margin to one score with another scoring throw early in the fourth. Northview responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Lark to push the lead to 35-21, but Hooch was back in the end zone quickly with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jordan Palmer.

Hooch knotted the game at 35 with four minutes remaining with a touchdown rush from Palmer, but Northview ended the dramatic second half with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Lark to Samuel Babadele.

Chattahoochee (1-2, 0-1) will battle another intra-city foe Friday when the Cougars return home to face Johns Creek. Northview (2-1, 1-0) will go on the road to face Dunwoody.

Alpharetta softball eyes playoffs after blowout win over North Atlanta

BY ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta softball made it look easy Thursday night against region opponent North Atlanta.

The Lady Raiders cruised to a 16-1 victory at home with the game called in the bottom of the third inning due to the run rule.

Megan McCullough and Becca Parham combined for nine RBIs while Alexis Lopresti struck out two batters and gave up no earned runs in the shortened contest.

“It’s a good fire starter for us heading into next week,” said Alpharetta head coach Edward Francis. “It was good to see us clicking on all cylinders. We have a really good offense from one to nine as long as we work together as a team. We kind of saw that a little bit tonight which was fun.”

North Atlanta (8-7, 3-6) struck first, scoring a run in the first after the leadoff batter reached base on an error. After that, the Warriors were unable to produce any offense or stop the

barrage of hits from the Lady Raiders’ offense.

The Raiders scored six runs in the home half of the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple off the centerfield fence from Parham.

Lopresti went three up, three down to start the second inning, and Alpharetta added three more runs to take a 9-1 lead going into the third. The Lady Raiders continued their offensive attack in the bottom of the third inning until they reached a 15-run lead to seal the win.

With Thursday’s win, Alpharetta moves to 8-5 on the season and 6-3 in region play, which puts the Raiders on the right side of the playoff bubble. The Raiders’ goals entering the season included a trip to the playoffs.

While they are currently in position to achieve that goal, they have set their sights higher.

“If we continue the success we’ve had in the first round of region play, we should at least make it into the playoffs as a four seed for sure,” Francis said.

“But we’re shooting for that three seed.

That’s our next goal.”

Milton football travels to California for ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience

While the result did not go the Eagles’ way — they fell 17-14 in a contest that went down to the wire —the experience was unlike any other in the realm of high school football.

“You could not have scripted a better three days,” head coach Adam Clack said. “Watching the team grow and spend time together and share a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can’t put a price tag on that or manufacture that experience. To see them form those bonds, it was awesome, and the kids behaved so well.”

There were certainly logistical challenges related to transporting 82 players, an entire coaching staff, support personnel and parents through airports, bus rides and hotels, but Clack said there were no issues.

“From airport customs, loading buses and being on a super tight schedule, the

Outside of their football contest, the Eagles also spent time enjoying the sights, sounds and experiences of Southern California.

Just a few hours before most Atlanta area teams were huddled in locker rooms away from the severe weather that delayed or postponed most Friday games, the Eagles were enjoying their time in the sun and on the sands of Venice Beach. And for a few minutes, they had the unique experience of running play walk-throughs with the Pacific Ocean providing background.

“The experience of something like that really tied together where we were and what this trip was about,” Clack said. “We were at the Pacific Ocean to play a football game and to have the

experience of building a team through shared moments.”

After touring UCLA and holding a tailgate party, the Eagles strapped up for their contest against JSerra, ranked in the top-50 nationally by MaxPreps and High School Football America.

After falling to Georgia powerhouse Buford on Sept. 6, the Eagles took another close, frustrating loss.

Milton took a 14-7 lead into halftime behind a touchdown rush from Ahmad Junearick and a Jack Nickel score on a fake punt, but the Eagles couldn’t close the game out in the second half.

“The defense played really well in the first half, and the offense was moving the ball well,” Clack said. “We had a lot of good things going for us, but we came out in the second half and couldn’t pick

up where we had left off. In the first half [JSerra] was looking tired, they flipped that on us in the second half.”

The Lions opened the third quarter with a long drive but came away scoreless. But after both teams exchanged several possessions, JSerra broke through to tie the game midway through the fourth.

The Eagles opted to go for fourthand-short in their own territory on the ensuing drive. While Clack said they were confident in the play call, the Lions forced a turnover on downs.

JSerra took advantage with a field goal to take its first lead of the contest with around two minutes remaining, leaving Milton in need of a quick scoring drive.

“We orchestrated a nice drive and got it down to [JSerra’s] 20-yard line, and we wanted to take one shot to the end zone with one time out and about 10 seconds left,” Clack said. “Unfortunately, we gave up a sack and it moved the ball backwards and knocked us out of field goal range.”

With one second left on the clock, the Eagles went for the game-winning Hail Mary, but their dramatic comeback hopes were dashed with an incompletion.

“I definitely think we represented ourselves and our state well, but it’s tough because we really would have liked to have represented with a win,” Clack said. “We have come up short two weeks in a row, but we have fought hard in both games. We are still growing and learning, and we have areas we can improve on. We talk about some of the little things that make a difference after these close loses, and once we address those, we’ll come out with hard-fought wins in these close games.”

Despite the disappointing loss, Clack said he and the team are forever grateful for the experience.

“I have to give a huge shout out to our booster club and parents and fan support we had along the way for helping us make this possible,” he said. “It stings we had a loss, but at the end of the day this is a lifelong memory for these kids, and it will grow the team, the program and the community. We appreciate all the love and support.”

“What I see a lot in my office is parents coming in and saying [their kids] just want attention or they are saying that to give their cell phone back…that’s a very dangerous precedent to have,” Magat said.

Chelsea Montgomery, Fulton County Schools executive director of counseling, psychological and social work services, said schools take any such comments seriously. She added that teens can take advantage of the Text 4 Help program, which connects students with a licensed physician through text, and parents or friends can use an anonymous tip line if they have concerns about a student. The school system also has mental health partners trained in suicide prevention.

Fulton County Medical Examiner Jan Gorniak also spoke on the panel after recently completing a study on suicide myths. She said major myths include that most people who take their own lives do so by purposeful overdose. Most suicides, she said, involve a firearm. She also said that suicide is not exclusive to those with depression, or that suicide rates increase around the holidays. Kids can also take their own life, Gorniak said. She once had a case in which an 8-year old had died by suicide.

COMMUNITY Beene also shared how people can help others who have been traumatized by suicide, even when it may feel difficult to do so.

“Don’t be strong for me, cry,” Beene said. “I can’t tell you the overwhelming peace it brought me to see all the people coming and crying for me. It was a true,

honest, genuine thing. I felt they were trying to take some of my pain away from me.”

Sean Curry of Stonecreek Church said it is okay to acknowledge how heartbreaking suicide is, and people should “lean in” instead of pulling away from someone who has been

impacted by suicide.

“I think we need to be people who can laugh with them, cry with them, hurt with them, hug them and be there for them,” he said.
