ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a local hospital on Sept. 1 to question a patient who checked in with a gunshot wound. Officers met with the patient, whose identity was withheld from an incident report, and gathered information about the incident. According to police, the shooting occurred shortly after 8:20 p.m. in the 3000 block of Chads Ford Way.

To bring statewide recognition to the issue, the Georgia Water Coalition included Fulton County’s achievement in their 2019 Clean 13 report. The annual report highlights individuals, businesses, industries, non-profits and governmental agencies whose extraordinary efforts have led to cleaner rivers, stronger communities and a more sustainable future for Georgians.

“As a native Atlantan, I’m so proud that Fulton County is the trailblazer,” said Rena Peck, executive director of Georgia River Network, who presented the award to Fulton Commission Chairman Rob Pitts. “It took a lot of guts and tenacity by the commissioners and staff.

It’s hard to count how many times the resolution went back to the board for ex-

amination, but Fulton County has taken the lead in curbing the stream of plastics into our waterways.”

The 13 water heroes recognized in the report were slated to receive their awards at a the Clean 13 Celebration in Atlanta on March 12, but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Georgia Water Coalition is a consortium of more than 260 conservation and environmental organizations, hunting and fishing groups, businesses and faith-based organizations that have been working to protect Georgia’s water since 2002. The Coalition annually publishes the Clean 13 list to recognize positive efforts on behalf of Georgia’s water and to bring attention to the issue to state leaders and citizens.

Milton City Council tackles roadside fireworks stands, roundabout lighting

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council approved several updates to the city’s codes relating to temporary fireworks stands and discussed lighting options for two future roundabouts during its Sept. 9 meeting.

With equestrian farms in many areas of the city, fireworks use is a contentious issue, and the city’s ordinance updates makes it more challenging for roadside and temporary fireworks stands to operate in the city.

The code changes strictly limit when and where a fireworks stand may operate and how they look.

The new regulations only allow fireworks stands to operate in select areas in the Crabapple and Deerfield areas for no more than 30 consecutive days.

The businesses would be limited to 800 square feet in total size and could only be white or off-white in color. A single banner, either black, white or off-white, would be allowed. Stands must be located within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant.

Several council members said they had either fielded questions from residents about completely banning fireworks stands or wondered themselves why the city was not taking that direction.

Councilman Joe Longoria said the city routinely touts its equestrian character and spends time and resources ahead of all major holidays where fireworks are routinely used urging residents to be cautious about their use.

While state law prohibits the city from banning the use of fireworks, Longoria asked City Attorney Ken Jarrard if Milton could ban the stands altogether.

He proposed an analogy in the city’s ban on vape shops from operating in Milton.

The move does not ban the use of vaping products, he said, but it does prevent their sale in the city.

Jarrard said he “cannot get comfortable” with a blanket ban on temporary fireworks stands in Milton.

Community Development Director Parag Agrawal voiced that while stands can still operate in the city, the regulations do impose regulations on where they can operate and come with design standards.

Councilman Peyton Jamison said that he thinks that’s enough to effectively drive away fireworks vendors from Milton.

“With these regulations, they’re going to Forsyth [County] or Alpharetta,” Jamison said.

In other action at the meeting, officials discussed streetlighting for the future roundabouts along Hopewell Road at the intersection of Hamby Road and Thompson Road. The city has opened the bidding process to construct the roundabouts.

Earlier this year, council members were generally in favor of decorative streetlights, but changed their tune when cost estimates came in.

Using Georgia Power to install and maintain the lights at both roundabouts would cost $137,000 in upfront costs plus monthly charges. Public Works Director Robert Drewry said the city could hire its own contractor for installation, but that would come with a higher price tag and Milton would be responsible for all service and repair of the lights.

That was a bit too opulent for board

members who instead opted for traditional timber poles with attached lights.

Each new pole would be $500 with monthly lighting costs for each light around $16 to $26.

Councilmembers voiced approval for the lower-cost option, with Laura Bentley stating it also would provide a more rural aesthetic over the decorative lights.

In other action, the city’s emergency ordinance was extended to Oct. 10. The ordinance has been pared down since March and now only includes provisions for allowing to-go beer and wine sales for businesses with permits for on-site alcohol sales, and it relaxes Milton’s signage codes.

The council also approved an 8-lot subdivision, dubbed Deerhaven Preserve, on 25 acres along Freemanville Road adjacent to the White Columns subdivision.

Council members also awarded DAF Concrete a $410,000 contract for construction of sidewalks along Cogburn Road for connectivity between the Devonshire and Oakstone Glen subdivisions and Cambridge High School.

Fulton County recruits 3,000 poll workers ahead of election

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — In the wake of issues with the June 9 primaries, Fulton County has recruited nearly 3,000 poll workers to help staff more than 245 polling sites around the county And more are on the way.

Many polling sites in the primary were short on workers and those skilled with the new voting machines.

Fulton County Registration and Elections Director Richard Barron said COVID-19 contributed to the missteps.

“During the June 9 primary, we not only lost poll workers but polling sites due to the COVID-19 crisis,” Barron explained. “As we move toward the Nov. 3 election, our goal is to equip the poll workers and our staff with the resources needed to be prepared and successful.”

In the 2018 general election, six in ten poll workers were over the age of 61, and 27 percent of those over 61 were over the age of 70, according to government data from that year’s Election Administration and Voting Survey. Previous years had seen similar demographics of older poll workers. Due to COVID-19’s effect on the elderly population, many of the usual poll workers opted to stay home rather than work during the pandemic.

Fulton County has implemented in-person training for poll workers.

In the 2018 general election, six in ten poll workers were over the age of 61, and 27 percent of those over 61 were over the age of 70.

The county has more than 60 training sessions scheduled. Barron said participants will receive rigorous training on how to operate the ballot marking devices, serving voters and understanding the importance of maintaining a safe environment.

The county has also increased the number of polling sites from 210 to 240.

“Social distancing requirements at some polling sites resulted in long lines,” Barron said. “We have included more polling locations for the Nov. 3 election.

This means that lines will be reduced going forward.”

The State Farm Arena will function as an official early voting location for all Fulton County residents. This is Georgia’s largest-ever voting precinct allowing for tens of thousands of voters to cast their votes while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Early voting will run Oct. 12- 30.

Fulton County offers two other voting options for those not comfortable with going to the polls. Citizens can request

a ballot by email and send it in by mail, or they can take advantage of the 24/7 drop boxes. Fulton County now has 40 drop boxes throughout the county.

Neither method requires any interaction with the staff. Currently, voters can request an absentee ballot as late as Friday, Oct. 30.

Barron said many applicants for poll worker positions say they want to become an effective part of the process.

“Those applying understand that this is an important election year, and they want to assist in making sure that voters have the best voting experience,” Barron said.

Poll workers are compensated $355 for working the election and attending training sessions. Those interested in becoming a poll worker can fill out the form on the Fulton County website, fultoncountyga.gov.

Fulton Schools plans return of students by mid-October COVID infection rates trending on lower path

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON—A continued decline in COVID-19 cases in Fulton County is setting up the gradual return of students back into classrooms, with all schools expected to fully open by mid-October.

Classes in the Fulton School System moved to virtual instruction on March 14 when the pandemic forced closure of the district’s 106 schools.

Last week during a work session for the Fulton School Board, Supt. Mike Looney updated changes to the fourphased reopening approved last month.

The changes could bring students back to schools quicker for face-to-face instruction.

The district entered the first phase Sept. 8 allowing students in pre-K through 2nd grade and small special education classes to come to school once a week for a short period. All other students are allowed one-to-one planned visits with their teachers.

Positive-trending health data prompted Looney to recommend skipping Phase 2 and moving straight to phase

District announces phased response to COVID cases The Fulton School System has adopted a three-tiered closing process to guide response to students or staff who test positive for or who are exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Last spring, the entire system shut down after a staff member in South Fulton County tested positive for the novel virus.

This fall, if only one or two staff or students tests positive, Superintendent Mike Looney said the district would require quarantine only for individuals who had “direct, sustained contact” within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes, identified through contact tracing. Impacted areas would be cleaned, but classes would not be disrupted.

If the number of cases rises, the 3 on Sept. 21, allowing all students to return to school for one full day a week.

Students will be assigned groups so no more than 25 percent of the student population is assembled at one time.

practice of “isolate, investigate, disinfect” would be implemented, with classes possibly moving to remote if needed.

If numbers prompt a move to level three, the district will take guidance from the Georgia Department of Public Health and state health officials. That could lead to school closures.

“If a single student in a single classroom [tests positive] it will not impact the entire school unless it expands to several students and staff,” Looney said.

Closing schools across the entire district will only occur under level three and would be based on the direction of either the public health entity or the state, Looney said. children,” Looney said.

Phase 4 is targeted for Oct. 5, providing students with two full days of courses, followed by the return to five days on Oct. 14. Face masks will be required for anyone on school property.

Looney emphasized the return to face-to-face is optional for students, at least for this semester, and remote learning will remain in place for those not ready to return to the classroom.

The dates for the return to face-toface is contingent on health data. Any indication of a rise in local COVID cases could stall the move to the next phase, Looney said.

“We are assuming we are going to hit the target dates,” Looney said. “If not, that decision will be announced a week before the date for re-opening to in-person instruction.”

North Fulton board member Linda McCain questioned the burden placed on teachers who may not know how many students will be in class or on the computer.

“My suspicion is that most of the students participating in Phase 1 reopening will be participating in the other phases,” Looney said. “But there will be a process by which parents have to elect to send their children to schools, and we recognize some will opt to continue universal remote learning.”

Looney said he is not prepared to set a deadline yet for parents to make that decision. A recent survey completed by approximately 10,000 parents indicated about one in three would likely continue remote learning.

Board member Katie Reeves, who represents North Fulton, said some teachers are concerned with conducting in-person and remote classes simultaneously.

“Complications could occur when a child in the classroom asks a question and the teacher will have to repeat it so children at home will hear it,” Reeves said. “How are we going to support our teachers?”

Looney admitted it was not a perfect process, and will take time to build it to scale. In the meantime, he asked the board’s “grace” to not furlough staff until final numbers come in.

The district’s first week enrollment was approximately 90,000 students, nearly 3,000 students below projections.

More than half of the shortfall is among kindergarten students, so numbers may rise when classrooms open.

Expectations are also that students in private schools may return to public school once in-person instruction resumes.

The grit and grace of working moms

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — There’s a painful truth Dr. Vonda Wright wants to break to working moms.

“Acknowledge that we’re not returning to normal,” the Northside Hospital surgeon said.

Speaking at the recent Women INfluencing Business Leadership Series, hosted by the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Wright said the so-called “new normal” has working mothers at a professional and financial disadvantage.

The National Women’s Law Center reports women with underage children make up nearly 16 percent of the workforce, but they represent large portions of essential workers that put their lives at risk. Working moms also account for a significant portion of service industry jobs that have disappeared during the pandemic, the center says.

Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the unemployment rate for women was at 10.6 in July. For men, the rate was 9.8. The numbers improved slightly in August, but women still had a higher unemployment rate, 8.4 percent, than men, 8 percent.

Wright says there is another harsh reality for today’s workforce.

“The truth of the matter is, in the future, we’re all going to be poorer,” she said.

Georgia mothers are already bringing in less money than fathers in the Peach State. According to a May 2020 study by

the National Women’s Law Center, working mothers overall are paid $0.74 for every dollar paid to fathers in the state. This amounts to a loss of $13,926 annually. Income continues to shrink when the data is broken down by race. Georgia ranks 40th in the nation for pay for Latina mothers, 33rd for Native American mothers, and 30th for White (non-Hispanic) mothers.

Nearly 77 percent of moms work full time, and many are the sole or primary breadwinner for their families, according to the Center for American Progress.

Locally, North Fulton Community Charities reports low or lost wages have led to poverty and homelessness for some struggling mothers and kids.

And childcare isn’t cheap. For those who can afford it, childcare can take 7 percent out of a household budget. For those living below the poverty line, research shows it can consume 30 percent of one’s income.

Vicki Shook, a senior manager with Verizon, says female contributions, including those of working moms, should be valued in the white- and blue-collar world.

“Women are strong leaders, communicators and problem solvers who can help a company, not only survive, but truly thrive,” Shook said. “Women are so important for promoting a good culture.

We’re like superheroes!”

Wright agrees.

“Despite the fact that you’re holding down the workplace, you’re probably also holding down the home front.”

She said just because our financial

Working moms find themselves holding down the fort on two fronts: at the workplace and at home. and professional futures could have a grim outlook, it doesn’t mean we have to. Wright tells moms working from home to pivot their mindset.

“If we’re going to do COVID and parenting, we’re going to think creatively,” Wright said. “We’re going to think differently. We’re going to think about the ways we can be collaborative, instead of just swirling around or circling the drain in chaos.”

Wright, an orthopedic surgeon and chief of Northside Hospital’s Sports Medicine Department, lives with her husband, two of her six kids, and her octogenarian parents. The pandemic gave her another plate to spin, but it taught Wright to be, what she calls, a CEO Parent.

“C is for creativity and communication.

E is for energy and expectations. O is for outsourcing and overflowing,” Wright said.

She tells moms working from home that productivity will look different, especially with small children.

“Plan bursts of highly productive time,” Wright said. “Maybe that’s planned around the morning and afternoon nap. Maybe that’s when you get a family member or a

trusted helper to give you two solid hours where you’re highly productive.”

Wright says wartime communication is critical at home and on the job.

“Everybody needs to know the plan,” Wright said. “Maybe, you have to have daily huddles. Maybe you have to have a Sunday afternoon discussion about what your week looks like and how to accommodate that.”

Most importantly, Wright wants moms to give themselves some grace while working from home during the pandemic. Even if it means surrendering to screen time for the kids and allowing dust bunnies to run wild.

“We suffer from thinking that we have to do everything,” she said. “We think someone is going to die if we say ‘No.’” she said. “Ask yourself, in this crazy time, do you really have to do everything?”

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The City of Milton and the LRJ Foundation joined forces to host a mental wellness webinar Sept. 10, World Suicide Prevention Day. It was the second year the city has partnered with a mental wellness organization for a similar event.

The webinar had added poignancy coming on the same day someone took their own life in Milton.

The panel featured Teressa Stann, co-founder of the LRJ Foundation, counselors, representatives from Fulton County Schools, Milton first responders and mental health organizations, and students from local high schools.

Speakers covered a wide array of topics, including how to manage your mental health, tips for parents to in recognizing possible mental health issues with their kids, what resources are available for those struggling with a mental health issue and the pressures all are facing in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The issue of mental health has added meaning for Stann, whose younger brother took his own life in 2011. Along with her sister, Karla Farina, she created the Lou Ruspi Jr. Foundation, named in honor of her brother.

The nonprofit works to improve mental wellness and prevent suicide through educational programming. The group also started the #BetterThanYesterday initiative which encourages wearing yellow to spread optimism, becoming more educated about mental health and positive self-care and coping skills.

Ruspi likened the sound of mental health issues with the noises associated with drowning — there are none.

“Silence kills more than noise ever will,” Ruspi said. “[Lou Ruspi] struggled in silence, and he passed from undiagnosed and untreated mental illness.”

Paige Santmyer, a therapist with Restoration Counseling of Atlanta, said people should listen to their “emotional messengers,” such as feeling tense, irritable or unmotivated, to indicate they need self-care.

“Self-care is doing those personal things, non-negotiable essentials that help you thrive, which is why mental healthcare looks different for everybody,” Santmyer said.

Self-care basics, she said, include a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep and incorporating physical movement into your day. People should also set healthy boundaries to know what they can and cannot take on at a particular time.

Amanda Johnson, a therapist in the Buckhead area, said due to the coronavirus, we are far more isolated than usual.

To maintain healthy relationships with family members, she emphasized striking a balance of alone time and together time, make small, positive gestures for those close to us and be open about your needs.

Jewell Gooding, executive director of Mental Health America of Georgia, promoted creating a personal, daily self-care plan, whether it is psychological, emotional, physical, professional or social. People should be mindful of what they are doing to support their overall well-being on a daily basis.

Sanona Williams of Path to Change Counseling Services outlined the differences between anxiety and stress and ways to curb social media use to reduce anxiety and depression. An important aspect is the understanding that people only present the best versions of themselves on social media, and to not let that lead to feelings of inadequacy.

While caring for one’s own mental health is vital, many of the panelists discussed caring for and identifying kids struggling with their mental wellbeing.

Webb Bridge Middle School Assistant Principal Carmen Hurst said parents should gauge their kid’s anxiety about

returning to class and discuss with them that school won’t be the same.

“Be positive and they will feed off that energy,” she said.

Parents should also “give grace” to their kids, school staff and themselves as everyone adjusts to a completely new way of schooling.

Jeannine Jannot, who authored “The Disintegrating Student: Super Smart and Falling Apart,” underscored the value of adults giving kids their full attention and listening with empathy to validate a kid’s emotions.

Parents should also ask their kids what they need and to be warm, supportive and a presence for them.

“That’s the single most important factor in protecting kids from adversity and building resiliency,” Jannot said.

Validating the feelings of the youth is a point touched on by Alpharetta High School student Rohit Jivangikar, who said parents should understand the pressures teens face today are vastly different from what they might have experienced.

“I urge parents to adopt a very openminded stance as a lot of different situations and experiences that we students go through are so unique towards the

Is art really worth all the bother?

Alpharetta is on a path that would create its own Arts Commission, a volunteer panel that would foster cultural enrichment within the city.

The group would advise the City Council on the acquisition of art works and how government can help

promote the arts.

Great news for those who draw landscapes, not so good for those who draw lines in the sand.

Any time government cozies up to the arts, there are inevitably critics

who protest their tax dollars put to purposes other than roads and public safety.

Piloting a campaign of culture is hard enough with private dollars. Add tax money to the mix, and you’re asking for it.

Look at the incessant calls to end government support for Public Broadcasting and Public Radio. Listen to the howls when a local gallery spends government grant money for a work many find objectionable. Worse yet are those with no opinion of art at all, as long as their tax dollars aren’t being used to express it.

It’s a tricky business, this cultural arts thing.

I have my doubts.

foster achievement, promote appreciation for a discipline so difficult to define?

What is art?

The noted poetry critic John Ciardi once complained of “the lack of criteria” for art. He admitted to having friends who suggested throwing coffee-soaked tissues at canvass was as much a work of art as anything, so long as the artist is sincere.

“Is sincerity enough?” he asked.

Ciardi argued for criteria, informed standards that a vast majority agree should be elemental within an art form. He decried the flood of so-called “poetry” he received in his mailbox each year.

“We’re all poets,” he concluded. The difference, he said, is that there are precious few who have put in the effort to master the techniques of poetry – its rhythms, its weight on words, its arrangement of ideas. For everyone else, their “great poem” never materializes on paper because its journey from the mind to the pen does not run along an informed path.

Art is not easy, but art appreciation is even more difficult, especially here in America.

The Kapellbrücke, or Chapel Bridge, is a covered wooden footbridge spanning the river Reuss in Lucerne, Switzerland.

On the interior of its canopy are paintings dating back to the 17th century.

I found myself walking that path some years ago.

As I strolled across the bridge, distracted by the magnificence of Lucerne, visible in sort of letterbox format between the railing and canopy, I was struck by a dreary realization. What I noticed most was not the artwork adorning my enclosure, it was the absence of graffiti.

There were no initials carved or scratched anywhere, no spray-painted figurines. All clear – for centuries.

Would such a phenomenon be possible here? Be honest.

A month before his death, President Kennedy spoke about our appreciation for art while attending the groundbreaking for the Robert Frost Library at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

This speech was important to Kennedy because he’d failed to repay the late poet for appearing at his inauguration in 1961. He redrafted the speech even on the plane to Amherst.

This is what he said: “I look forward to an America which will reward achievement in the arts as we reward achievement in business or statecraft,” he said. “I look forward to an America which will steadily raise the standards of artistic accomplishment and which will steadily enlarge cultural opportunities for all of our citizens. And I look forward to an America which commands respect throughout the world not only for its strength but for its civilization as well.”

An interview with Dr. Taylor Brought to you by — Alyssa McNamara Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta for its third year in a row of being voted Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Fulton! I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Taylor and physician assistant Kathryn Filipek at Premier Dermatology to get their take on their success and to learn a bit more about them.

Alyssa: Hey you two! So nice to see you guys again! I’ve previously had the pleasure of speaking with you both separately regarding Premier Dermatology and your particular contributions to the practice, but I wanted to take time to sit down with you both to hear your thoughts on your continued success. Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment. To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare.

Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions.

We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive. I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true)

Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card?

Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food.

You can make soup out of anything.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is.

Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

Johns Creek Primary Care is an Internal Medicine practice which specializes in adolescents, adults, and seniors where quality, prevention and safety are our top priorities. As a testament to our focus on quality, we were the first practice in the Eastern United States last year to incorporate a new artificial intelligence (AI) program to diagnose significant diabetic retinopathy sooner than most of our ophthalmology colleagues. This FDA approved retinal photo AI read achieves 87% sensitivity and 90% specificity in finding this potentially blinding diabetic eye disease compared to an average of 41% sensitivity with board-certified ophthalmologists.

We were also the 2nd practice in the U.S. to start diabetic neuropathy ultrasound treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy pain and numbness that has shown amazing results.

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, safety for our patients while deliver-

ing excellent healthcare has been our passionate goal. We were one of the first primary care practices in our area to adopt car visits and telemedicine visits in mid-March to minimize our patient’s exposure to Coronavirus during their visits. All sick patients are evaluated in their car and tested for COVID-19, strep throat, or flu if it is appropriate, or evaluated by a telemedicine visit to avoid spread to other patients. Only well patients and employees are allowed in our office after they pass a temperature check and symptom screen. Mask and social distancing are enforced. Intensified cleaning protocols are in place.

Patients are placed in a private exam room as soon as possible after arrival.

Employees wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPEs) to avoid contracting COVID-19, and employee testing and quarantining is expedited if the need arises.

Extended office hours starting at 7:00 AM Monday through Saturday help give our patients the flexibility they need in scheduling appointments. We offer an Optifast weight loss program, dietitian services, and clinical research opportunities at our location. Many diagnostic tests are performed in our office such as ultrasounds, ECHOs, nuclear stress tests, lung function tests, dementia screenings, and lab draws to increase convenience for our patients.

Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants.

There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market.

For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples:

We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice.

We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all.

Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on.

We are very proud to be once again voted Best Breakfast in The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

Scouts from Troop 1459, chartered

by St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Milton, led the placement of the flags Sept. 10 and held a silent memorial the next day on the 19th anniversary of the attack.

The memorial was started by former Cambridge student Caroline Willis in 2012. After Caroline graduated, her younger sister, Liz, continued the tradition. With Liz’s graduation in 2018, the Willis family has passed organization of the event to Troop 1459.

“Troop 1459 is honored to be able to continue the annual 9/11 Memorial at Cambridge,” Marc Godwin, Scoutmaster of Troop 1459 said. “Led by scouts who are students at Cambridge and supported by the entire troop, we will continue this memorial to honor our flag, our country, and the lives lost on September 11, 2001.”
