Police arrest motorist for reckless driving MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman was arrested Aug. 6 on Hickory Flat Road after she allegedly attempted to flee police during a traffic stop.

The woman was allegedly caught by police passing multiple vehicles in a no passing zone.

When police attempted to stop the car, the woman reportedly did not slow down and kept driving down Hickory Flat Road. Police said they followed the vehicle until it pulled into a driveway on Hickory Mill Road and abruptly stopped.

Woman’s name used in unemployment filing MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police Aug. 3 after she discovered someone had used her identity while filing for unemployment benefits from the state.

The woman told police she was alerted to the fraud by her company’s human resources department, who reached out earlier in the day regarding a claim she had filed for state unemployment. According to the woman’s employer, someone used her name and information to file for the benefits.

The woman told her employer and police she has worked for the company for 20 years and is still employed there, and she did not file for any unemployment.

Police advised the woman to notify the Federal Trade Commission of the fraudulent activity, freeze her credit and contact the state unemployment office.

FedEx driver reports gas station hit and run MILTON, Ga. — Police were called to the Shell gas station on Birmingham Highway Aug. 4 after a truck driver allegedly hit another truck then quickly left the scene.

Police said the driver acknowledge she did not live at the residence on Hickory Mill Road, nor did she know who lived there. When they asked her if she was attempting to evade officers, she did not respond.

Police arrested the woman and released her on a copy of charges for fleeing or attempting to elude and reckless driving-first offense.

Police said they were patrolling the area following reports from Milton residents of cars speeding and passing in the no passing zones on Hickory Flat Road.

A driver of a FedEx truck told police he was filling up with gas when a U-Haul truck passing by struck his delivery truck. The driver of the U-Haul truck stopped and spoke briefly with the FedEx driver about the damage, but the two did not exchange any information.

The driver of the U-Haul truck allegedly told the FedEx driver that he was on a tight schedule and to call the police and report a hit and run. He then got back in his truck and left the gas station.

Woman alleges assault by hospice care worker ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman called police Aug. 6 alleging a hospice care worker beat her son and stole jewelry from her home the week before.

The woman told police an employee from a hospice care service was at her residence the afternoon of July 28 taking care of her son, who has since passed away.

As the caretaker was leaving the residence, he allegedly told the woman her son almost fell out of bed, but he caught him before he hit the ground. When the caretaker left, the woman went to check on her son and noticed several bruises on his face, legs and hands, which she suspected may have been delivered by the caretaker.

A couple of days following the visit, the mother said she noticed two rings, with a combined value of approximately $2,500, were missing from her home.

The woman said she had no photos of the bruises on her son, and the body

was cremated. She told police she would like to press charges against the worker.

Man loses thousands in foreign transaction MILTON, Ga. — Police met with a Milton resident Aug. 3 who reported someone in India had stolen more than $3,000 from his bank account.

The man told police he regularly sends money to his father in India. He sends his father money two to three times a month using the Western Union app to transfer money directly from his bank to his father’s bank.

On July 31, the man noticed two unauthorized transactions for money wires to a different tracking number. The transactions, totaling $3,322, arranged for the money to be collected in person in a different region of India from where his father lives.

Injured deer put down in resident’s backyard ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were called to Old Path Crossing Aug. 2 after a homeowner reported an injured deer in their backyard.

When police arrived, they said they found a deer hanging over the metal fence with a broken leg. After speaking with a police supervisor, the officer received permission to put down the injured deer with his handgun.

Dispatch called Public Works to remove the deer.

City proposes names for Greenspace Bond land purchases

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council is busy considering official names for the wealth of park land and greenspace it has purchased over the past few years with money from its Greenspace Bond.

The park at the former Milton County Club, Lackey Road property, Webb Road property and other placeholder names are all on tap for new names.

The City Council was presented with six proposed names for the areas that include a total of 406 acres at its Aug. 10 meeting.

The Milton Greenspace Advisory Committee, which identifies suitable properties for the city to preserve, and the Milton Historical Society drafted the proposed names, which were selected either for the history, environment or location of the properties.

An emphasis was placed on calling these lands preserves, not parks, to differentiate them from active park spaces.

Lands purchased with Greenspace Bond funds can only be used as preserved areas or passive parks.

The largest and first purchase from the bond has been referred to as the park at the former Milton Country Club property since early 2018. Last December, Milton purchased an additional 12 acres of land along Freemanville Road to bring the total size of the site to 142 acres.

The proposed name for the site is Chicken Creek Preserve, selected as a nod to the surname of a Native American family that lived in the Little River area and for the 1.6-miles of Chicken Creek that runs within the property.

The 106-acre property off Lackey Road, which has been either called the Lackey Road property or the former Wolff family property, could be dubbed Lahkapani Preserve. Community Development Director Parag Agrawal said Lahkapani

is a Hindi word meaning “many waters.”

He said the Wolff family had called property Lahkapani since 1959 after a visitor from India suggested the name.

Last June, the city purchased 88 acres at the intersection of Bethany Road and Providence Road and expanded that footprint by purchasing an additional 16 acres adjacent to the site.

The area includes the 7-acre Eads Lake.

The proposed name for this property is Cooper Sandy Creek Preserve based

on the waterway in the area. Agrawal said there was debate over whether it should be Cooper or Copper Sandy Creek, but because most locals refer to it as Cooper Sandy, that name won out.

The 21 acres the city purchased in April 2019, previously called Belmont Farms, could be named Freesoil Preserve. The moniker has historical connotations with a reference to a post office once located in the area.

Last July the city acquired 5 acres along Webb Road which now has the suggested name of Post Office Preserve.

The city’s 28-acre tract along Hamby Road could be simply named for its location as the Hamby Road Preserve.

City officials have said the proposed names are just that, proposals, and they are still seeking community feedback and input from the City Council.

The Greenspace Advisory Committee also suggested the city consider “Unity Preserve” as an option.

Residents passed the $25 million Greenspace Bond referendum overwhelmingly in 2016. Milton has since made eight total purchases for six preserved sites totaling 406 acres. There is approximately $4.7 million dollars remaining from the bond.

The funds can either be used to preserve land or make improvements to passive parks, but the city has emphasized it will use the funds to purchase land instead of upgrades to areas already owned by the city.

Cities mount fight against Fulton over COVID relief funds

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Cities are waging a fight with Fulton County over its proposed distribution of federal COVID relief money.

At stake is more than $100 million in federal aid to compensate local governments for extra expenses related to the pandemic.

Fulton County received $104 million in federal aid dollars this spring to distribute to 14 of the 15 cities within its borders. The City of Atlanta received its own award directly from the federal government.

The money was part of the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act that passed Congress and was signed into law by President Trump in March.

Fulton County has proposed distributing $2.5 million of its award to the 14 cities. That’s a little over 2 percent of the total it received.

Roswell City Attorney David Davidson said all the cities are joining to press for a more equitable distribution.

He pointed out that, except for a small area along Fulton Industrial Boulevard, all of Fulton County’s population lies within cities. It is the cities, he said, that have born the major brunt of extra expenses in public safety and admin-

istrative operations stemming from the health crisis.

“That’s not to say that Fulton County isn’t providing any services, because they are,” he said. “They have the Health Department and other services that they do provide, but the cities have a lot of expenses due to the COVID that were not budgeted for last year.”

Fulton County wasted little time spending the money it received through CARES. In early April, it committed more than $13 million to nonprofits serving the homeless and providing meals to the disadvantaged.

In July, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners set aside $1.5 million to create the Virtual Arts Initiative for individual artists and nonprofit arts organizations adversely affected by the health crisis.

Roswell Councilman Matthew Tyser said he hopes the cities and county can come to an understanding before legal action progresses.

“I’m always troubled when one part of government sues another part of gov-

ernment because we’re basically using up citizen moneys,” Tyser said. “I’m hoping that everyone will come to the table and work through this.”

Other North Fulton cities will consider joining the coalition in the coming weeks.

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said he plans to ask the City Council to approve the agreement at their next meeting.

“As you may or may not realize, Fulton is the last county to receive direct funding that has not been able to come to an acceptable agreement with its cities,” he said. “To date, Fulton has only been able to share about 2 percent of the funds it received with its cities. This is completely unacceptable and not in keeping with the guidance provided by the state.”

Milton officials were scheduled to consider the item at their meeting this week.

Alpharetta had a meeting scheduled for this week, but that session has been canceled.

Drake House names new development director

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Megan Riddle has joined The Drake House as development director.

“Megan brings a fresh perspective and more than 10 years of development experience,” said Nesha Mason, executive director of The Drake House. “Megan is passionate about our mission and is already a great asset to our team.”

Already, more than 60,000 residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. They account for more than 44 percent of U.S. coronavirus deaths, even though less than 1 percent of Americans live in nursing homes. This is a national disgrace.

Paint recycling to benefit Cambridge Theatre MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge Theatre will host its Paint Recycling Fundraiser Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school’s front parking lot. Socially distanced drop-off stations will in place and masks and gloves will be worn by those accepting paint.

It’s time for lawmakers to come together to pass a bipartisan COVID-19 response package with dedicated funding and five key policies to protect seniors living in nursing homes and other longterm care facilities: 1. Ensure regular, ongoing testing and adequate personal protective equipment.

2. Create transparency focused on daily, public reporting of cases and deaths in facilities, communication with families when loved ones are discharged or transferred, and accountability for how billions of dollars in federal funding is spent.

3. Require access to facilitated virtual visitation.

4. Provide better care for residents through adequate staffing, oversight and access to in-person formal advocates, called long-term care ombudsmen.

5. Stop attempts to provide blanket immunity for long-term care facilities related to COVID-19.

The hopeful news is that legislation has been introduced in Congress that will help save the lives of nursing home residents. What remains missing is the will to make these older Americans and their families a priority.

Our elected leaders must act now to protect Georgia’s long-term care residents and staff before the death toll rises even higher. It is literally life or death.

Milton settles on right of way price for project

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton has agreed to settle with property owners along Creamer Road so it can move forward with the roundabout project at Thompson Road and Hopewell Road. The city invoked eminent domain last year after it could not agree on a purchase price with the owners of 1.04 acres at 158 Creamer Road.

The condemnation process is now complete, and Milton has agreed to pay $185,000 for the land, $52,400 more than its original offer.

Last year, the city offered 158 Cremer Road, LLC, owners of the property, $132,600. The owners rejected the offer and countered at $250,000. The city counter-offered an undisclosed amount higher than its original offer, but that proposal was also rejected, spurring the council to approve a resolution invoking eminent domain.

After nearly a year of ongoing discussion, the two parties settled near the middle of those two figures at $185,000.

The eminent domain action is the ninth the city has pursued for road projects since its inception in 2006. Prior condemnation resolutions have been accepted for properties in downtown Crabapple, at the intersection of Hopewell Road/Francis Road/ Cogburn Road and for the Providence Road/Birmingham Highway roundabout.

The city acquired five properties by invoking eminent domain, but only one has been through condemnation.

The others were either settled after a resolution was passed or the properties were bank owned.

Despite the delays in the right of way acquisition phase of the intersection improvement, the city said there has been no delay in the timetable for the project which is currently out to bid.

The project is funded by the Transportation Special Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax approved by voters in 2016. The roundabout was identified as a Tier 1 project.

Here’s to adapting your entire meeting platform Toastmasters adapts to new online forum

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — You’ve got to hand it to those who turn lemons into lemonade.

CHAT Toastmasters of Alpharetta faced some pretty yellow fruit when the pandemic struck this spring, forcing them to cancel in-person meetings. So, how do you practice public speaking, much less draw a good laugh, with no audience in front of you?

You get good online.

“The whole gist of the organization is to help people achieve through effective evaluations with whatever they’re doing,” said Scott Hoehn, CHAT Toastmasters vice president for membership. “It’s in all the Fortune 500 companies now. The Coca Cola club, The Sparkling Speakers is the name of their club. They find that it’s really built for leadership now.”

While not limited to business professionals, Toastmasters draws its share of members from the corporate world, businesses that promote effective speaking skills among their employees. There are close to two dozen Toastmasters chapters in north Metro Atlanta, each with from 15 to 50 members.

In a typical meeting, there are two or three assigned speakers who give short, five to seven-minute talks on any subject they choose, following the guidance of the many program materials provided

by Toastmasters International. Those programs range from humorous talks, speeches to inform, persuade, entertain, motivate and more.

After the talk, the speaker receives a short evaluation, stressing the strengths they have as well as a thought or two on how they might improve. Some members say their club gives them a “bomb-shelter” where they can try out new material, say a sales pitch, before presenting it to their company or a client “Aside from building self-confidence, it helps them in their community roles,” said Hoehn, who is a past district gover-

nor for the organization.

CHAT Toastmasters President Christian Dixon said she was urged by her employer, Nielsen, to join the club. She brought on co-worker Madelyn Michels later.

“Our company actually believes in it since we’re both in sales-oriented or client-service roles,” Dixon said.

The skills learned and honed through Toastmasters, she said, are even more

important now that the business world has turned to online meetings. The same communication skills needed to succeed online can only be enhanced with the kind of coaching you receive from Toastmasters brethren, she said.

“Now, we’re really understanding how to use the camera better, hand expressions and where to look,” Dixon said.

“Working on some of the skills have really helped us all.”

Michels agreed the lessons learned in public speaking have helped her career.

“I participated in one meeting, and I just fell in love,” she said. “I always was very conscious of how I spoke to people, especially when I landed this new role at Nielsen. I was very conscious of how I talked to clients.”

Now, she said, she speaks with more confidence. The club has sharpened her skills in reading people, grammar usage and pronunciation.

As far as humor, Hoehn seems to be the critics’ choice. In his last talk, he applied a screen background that put him aboard a commuter bus. He even raised an arm to mimic holding onto a strap.

Daniel Schwartz, public relations director for CHAT Toastmasters, said it’s easy to join any club. He suggests going to the toastmasters.org website to find a nearby location that seems to fit your interests. Fees are around $50 for six months, he said.

“You can try out as many clubs as you wish,” he said.

In normal times, CHAT Toastmasters meets at Serindipity Labs on North Point Center East. Meetings are now held on Zoom.

Community funds FurKids van in memory of racecar driver Van honors volunteer killed in auto accident

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — FurKids’ new van will be significant for many, for those with four legs transported from kill shelters to the organization’s new headquarters off Union Hill Road, for all the people who care for and adopt those new companions. Emblazoned on the sides of this new van is the smiling face of Milton’s Sara Edge, a promising, 20-year-old race car driver and volunteer at the shelter who was killed in a traffic accident last year.

Coming from a family of racers, Edge was a rising force on the Porsche GT4 Clubsport racing circuit and had begun making her mark in the Mazda Miata Club Spec series. While not at the racetrack, she spent her time volunteering at FurKids, eventually adopting her own dog, Obi, along with her fiancé.

She was described as having a “larger than life” personality and lifted the spirits of those around her, but her life was sadly cut short.

On Sept. 11, 2019, Edge was driving home from her job at Discovery Parts at Atlanta Motorsports Park and was involved in a head-on collision that killed her.

Out of the tragic death, Edge’s family concluded a great way to honor her memory was to have those bereaved donate to FurKids No Kill Animal Shelter, a cause

close to her heart, said her father, J.D. “One of our racing buddies, Charlie Craig, caught wind of that late in the racing season,” J.D. said. “He said he would match those funds up to the end of the year.”

Through the campaign, FurKids founder Samantha Shelton said around $24,000 was raised which funded muchneeded transport. She said the group’s van had broken down and was beyond repair. Shelton asked the Edge family if they could use the donations to fund a new van that would honor Sara and got the greenlight.

On Aug. 10, Edge’s family and FurKids staff gathered at their new shelter to dedicate the van in Sara’s memory with photos of her smiling in her fire suit on each side and her racing number, No. 99, adorning the rear doors.

“We absolutely love it,” J.D. said. “I’m absolutely thrilled to see her face up there. I love that smile.”

Shelton said the outpouring of support to fund the van was “greater than we have ever seen,” and added the van has already helped save dozens of animals from kill shelters.

“She was a lovely young lady, it’s sad that she was taken from us so early,” she said. “She loved dogs and loved FurKids, so it’s a wonderful way to remember her and honor her. It makes me feel proud to be able to honor her life and continue doing the work she loved being a part of. Just to be able to continue her legacy and to show other people, don’t forget her.”

Doing more with less because of a pandemic “How to do more with less: The less that you do, do better.”

Where did I come across that idea?

They are my legacy, and it is comforting to know with quiet satisfaction and stillness, that I have this closure, so early. Thank you, Hans, Amelia, and Carl.

We are all in uncharted territory trying to figure out what we are dealing with in this pandemic. It reminds me of Plato’s parable of the blind men and the elephant. What we know and understand depends on which part of the elephant we have touched, so our understanding evolves each day with each experience, and it is different for each one of us.

To a limited degree, time and history are teachers we can turn to for help. From a business point of view, we recall past recessions and past economic

malaise. The world financial crash of 2008 felt like the end of the economic world as we knew it. For months, there was absolutely no end in sight. Everything just kept getting worse. The event was catastrophic, uncontrollable, and felt like a runaway locomotive barreling down the track at 100 miles per hour.

But it passed. Somehow, we kept going because we collectively — worldwide — pulled together and did what was necessary to survive.

On a local level, I recall that we had to take drastic measures. We made big cuts everywhere we could and shut down our prized new paper that we had worked so hard to launch and which was beginning to thrive — the Gwinnett Herald. But we did what we had to and kept moving forward one step at a time, one day at a time.

It was the same thing a few years prior to the great financial crisis, during yet another recession. This one cost us our business newspaper, The Business Post, and our Lake Lanier Herald which was delivered across three counties around the lake. I remember that vividly because I was the one driving and delivering most of those papers each week.

Time travels in great repeating arcs.

So, when I heard that the pandemic was taking the newest news competitor in our market out of the game — they were shutting down — I was not surprised. Initially when they announced their entry into our market, I remember wondering what they were thinking. This is one of the most competitive markets in the country. How could they miss that?

I also recall speculating about how I would feel if, in fact, they didn’t make it.

I had anticipated that I would feel possibly validated or relieved or something like that, but when I heard the news, I only felt introspective and a sense of loss.

“No one should ever feel good because someone else feels bad.“ While doing more with less is now the order of the day for business in general, it has been the marquee business model for newspapers for at least a decade. This pandemic is just making it worse.

A few weeks ago, we started advertising to hire reporters. I’ve now seen resumes from over 100 applicants with

Fulton school district postpones fall sports until Sept. 14

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Schools announced Aug. 13 that all fall sports would be postponed until Sept.

14, a ruling that will affect the crosscountry, softball, volleyball and football seasons.

In a statement, the district said it will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and decide on the remainder of the season by Sept. 14.

“The district will continue to place the

safety of the students and staff first while remaining committed to offer a fall season for our student athletes,” the district said. “FCS will allow each fall team and the marching band to continue practice and condition[ing] through this time.”

The move pushes back the volleyball, softball and cross-country seasons as many schools were preparing for their first competition of the season.

It also delays the start of the football season by an additional two weeks. The Georgia High School Association had already pushed back the start of the

These programs are now facing a massive logistical challenge. All North Fulton programs play in regions that include teams from outside the county, and those districts may opt to begin play on Sept. 4 creating scheduling headaches.

Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell compete in a region with three Cherokee County teams. The situation is similar in Region 7-6A where Cambridge, Centennial, Chattahoochee and Johns Creek play against Riverwood of Atlanta and three Cherokee County schools.

This year, Northview has been placed in a region as the only Fulton County team.

For softball teams, the move cuts the regular season in half even if play resumes Sept. 14. The GHSA’s final date for a regular season game is Oct. 10.

Volleyball teams face a similar outlook with the final day for a match set for Oct. 17. The final day of the crosscountry regular season is Oct. 31.

On Aug. 6, the GHSA moved back the start date for competition cheer to November and delayed one-act play until spring.
