MILTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY/SPECIAL
Adding to the history books Milton Historical Society President Jeff Dufresne (third from right) accepts a donation of three original deeds from the 1832 Georgia land lottery that includes property in present-day Milton. The deeds were donated by Milton residents Byron Foster, his sister Shirley Morgan and their cousin Helen Gilleland, who found the documents in the basement of her Sandy Springs home, which she inherited from family members. Gilleland gave Foster the documents because his property on Westbrook Road in the northeast portion of the city was originally within Land Lot 260 in the 1832 lottery. The state’s land lotteries, which occurred from 1805 to 1832, distributed land that had previously been occupied by the Muscogee (Creek) peoples and Cherokee Nation. Each lot in the 1832 lottery contained 40 acres. Pictured (L to R): Helen Gilleland, Shirley Morgan, Byron Foster, Jeff Dufresne, Amy Dubroc and Laura Foster. 2020
