Man’s credit cards maxed while he was incarcerated MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police received a May 18 report from a man who said his credit cards were maxed out while he was in prison for over three years.

The man called the police station and said he was incarcerated from April 2017 to September 2020. When he came home, he had a stack of letters from banks letting him know he’d reached the spending limit on five credit cards in his name. He said he was debt free when he went to prison and came

The man denied making the charges because he was in prison. He said he didn’t know who did use his cards and does not know where they are. Additional cards were issued on two of the accounts unauthorized, and two phone lines were opened in his name without his knowledge, he claimed.

The man told officers the fraudulent activity caused his credit score to drop nearly 400 points and he filed the police report in an attempt to repair his credit score.

If you are frustrated by competitive offers, remember: SOMEONE is winning the bid, and it’s not always the cash offer.

rienced agent, a solid local lender and a home inspector at the ready. Experience and relationships are key here. Milton, Alpharetta to waive non-resident fees on select recreation programs

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Milton and Alpharetta could soon waive non-resident fees for certain recreation programming that will save participants some cash and could bolster the programs through added registrations.

The move comes over two years after Milton chose not to renew a previous parks agreement between the cities that waived all non-resident fees for Milton residents participating in Alpharetta parks and recreation programs.

Under the new agreement, Milton and Alpharetta are slated to waive nonresident fees, which add significant costs to registration, for youth football, youth softball and special needs summer camps.

“The Milton residents and Alpharetta residents will be able to enjoy all these programs at a more affordable rate,” Interim Milton Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen said at the Milton City Council’s May 24 meeting.

Milton approved the agreement at the meeting. Alpharetta is expected to sign their portion of the contract in the weeks ahead, which will need approval by its City Council.

Both cities use the North Atlanta Football League as their football provider. With the agreement, Milton will oversee youth football for both cities. Milton will dedicate two fields at Bell Memorial Park for football while Alpharetta will earmark one field at North Park.

McKlveen said about two-thirds of registrants in the NAFL are Milton residents.

The agreement will be a boon for the local youth softball community.

Milton does not have its own softball provider, so its residents have been forced to pay fees for join Alpharetta’s program for several years. Those fees will be waived under the agreement.

“The big kick is, the Milton participants would be considered residents in the travel softball program, which really got hit hard when (previous parks agreement) expired, because there was a lot of Milton participation in that

travel softball side,” McKlveen said.

Non-resident fees will also be waived for the cities’ two special needs summer camps, Milton’s Camp Joyful Soles and Alpharetta’s Camp Happy Hearts. Milton’s summer program is for those aged 13-22, with Alpharetta’s Happy Hearts providing a camp for ages 6-12. Under the combined effort, participants from 6-22 will be able to join the camps without nonresidential fees.

“It was a no-brainer marry there,” McKlveen said. “We can offer programming for both cities at that residentrate to help those...families.”

The agreement will have a financial impact to Milton’s coffers. The city expects to lose about $6,000 in revenues a year it gained through non-resident fees. A City Council document states city staff believes the benefits outweigh the small loss in revenue.

“I think this is a step in the right direction,” Milton councilman Peyton Jamison said. “I applaud Alpharetta and Milton coming together and getting this done. I think it’s great.”

Milton chose not to renew the prior

agreement between the cities, which was in place from 2012 to 2019, most notably to invest in its own parks and programming. During the first five years of the agreement, Milton paid Alpharetta $2.25 million to allow its residents to join Alpharetta programs without incurring non-resident fees.

Since that time, Milton has expanded its parks programming and purchased the Cox Road Athletic Complex, which netted the city two, full-sized rectangular fields and a half-sized turf field.

Alpharetta is also considering expanding and updating its park spaces.

The city is considering a $29.5 million parks bond that could be voted on by residents in this November’s General Election if the Alpharetta City Council adds the issue to the ballot.

Alpharetta has narrowed down a list of 12 potential projects the bond could fund, including improvements to the Equestrian Center at Will Park, a new soccer field at Webb Bridge Park, the design and buildout for Waters Road Park, Mayfield Road Park and Milton Avenue Park and other projects.

Milton brings back Farmers Market, moves to Wednesdays

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton residents have a farmers market to call their own again. The Milton Farmers Market made its debut June 2 at Broadwell Pavilion and will run each Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. through Nov. 3.

The markets will feature seasonal vegetables, prepared foods, meats, eggs, sauces and some non-food items for sale from local and regional vendors.

The farmers market isn’t the city’s first venture into the popular event, but it expects this iteration will be more successful. Courtney Spriggs, Milton’s community outreach manager, said Milton’s past events had competition for vendors and attendees from neighboring markets, including the prolific Alpharetta Farmers Market, which takes place each Saturday from April to November.

But with the rising popularity of these events, it is now more commonplace for them to occur on weekdays, Spriggs said, and the market will be able to attract more vendors, and hopefully, more attendees.

To make it happen, the city has partnered with one of its

residents, Judy Hall.

Hall has spearheaded efforts to coordinate the events, bring vendors on board and help with setup and cleanup. In exchange, the city is helping to promote the events and offering the use of Broadwell Pavilion at no charge. Revenues from the Farmers Market will go back into the program.

“We’re so excited to parent with a Milton resident who has the resources and skills to devote to [the Farmers Market],” Spriggs said. “This was a gift from Judy to take this on.”

Hall said she was inspired to coordinate the events because she is a farmers market fan and thought Milton was a perfect location to play host to another.

“It has been so fun working with Courtney and the vendors,” Hall said. “We are ready to get it going.”

The partnership is also beneficial, Spriggs said, because funding for the city’s events has been hampered by the sharp decline in hotel/motel tax revenues amid the pandemic.

The events will be held at Broadwell Pavilion rain or shine, with Hall saying there is plenty of shade. She said attendees should follow signs for parking, which will be near the pavilion with some overflow spots being worked out, including some at Crabapple Baptist.

Fulton County Schools to lift mask mandate June 1 CDC guidance, case numbers support move

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA, Ga. — On June 1, the Fulton County School System will join an increasing number of districts across the state loosening restrictions on face masks during summer school sessions and continuing into next school year.

While some districts, such as Cobb County and Marietta City school systems, are lifting mask mandates only for those fully vaccinated, Fulton County Schools is lifting its mandate altogether.

Fulton Superintendent Mike Looney said the decision was based on new information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with the declining cases of COVID-19 cases and rising numbers of those vaccinated.

“After the CDC’s new guidance was issued to allow vaccinated individuals to go without masks, it has become impractical for the district to differentiate between those who have been vaccinated or not,” Looney said.

“We are pleased to see the increasing number of staff, students and community members who have received the vaccination and the continued data trends

indicating COVID numbers are declining in our community,” Looney said.

Alpharetta parks bond faces new headwinds

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — City officials are expected to expand discussions Monday over whether Alpharetta should consider a multi-million-dollar bond issue dedicated to parks.

As proposed, residents would vote on whether to approve the bond in the November general election.

Revised cost estimates for parks initiatives to be funded through the bond have swelled by 15 percent over original figures.

At a May 24 meeting, the City Council learned that costs for major upgrades and land acquisitions generally approved for the bond have climbed to $35 million. That’s about $5.5 million more than the original figure discussed in April.

Right now, the city has a bonding capacity of about $30 million, according to Alpharetta Finance Director Tom Harris. That means the city could afford annual payments of $1.65 million over 25 years without raising the tax rate on property or without raiding established levels of other funds. If the city approves a higher bond, say $35 million, the higher annual payments would likely be drawn from the city’s recurring capital projects fund which the city wants to rebuild after it took a sizeable hit last year during the pandemic.

Harris said the city could scale some of the parks bond projects into phases and address the most immediate needs, then tackle the balance of the work with regular parks or capital funding.

The city is listing 12 projects to consider for the bond, each ranked in preference through polling of the City

Council.

Topping the list are the buildout and improvements to the Equestrian Center at Wills Park and new turf for the Webb Bridge Park soccer field.

Upgrades and enhancements to Wills Park outside the Equestrian Center also scored high.

Implementing portions of the Wills Park Master Plan were originally estimated at $4 million. That number is now $7 million.

Other projects under consideration include design and buildouts for Waters Road Park, Mayfield Road Park and Milton Avenue Park.

The list also includes design and buildout for the small Farmhouse Park site near Ga. 400 and Old Milton Parkway. The 5-acre tract is thought to be the earliest settlement for the area that would become Alpharetta.

Parks and Recreation Director Morgan Rodgers said his department is still waiting for final conceptual drawings for some of the projects. He said projects could be divided into phases, but no decisions have been made as to which portions are delayed.

He said he is confident his department can develop a staged approach to all the projects that would fit into the bond funding.

Most council members said they want to keep the bond at its original $29.5 million level that would allow the city to continue a financially secure path on other funds.

The higher project cost estimates are one kink in what earlier appeared to be an almost certainty.

Now, a November bond issue itself is drawing some concerns.

until next spring before placing a bond issue on the ballot.

He said November is already weighted with a referendum to extend the countywide transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST, a measure expected to net the city close to $60 million over five years for roads and trails.

If the TSPLOST vote fails and the parks bond passes, Hipes said, Alpharetta will have committed a giant share of its assets to parks, and transportation projects will suffer.

“We’re putting our fate into the hands of Fulton County voters,” he said, adding that the last TSPLOST referendum passed 52 percent to 48 percent.

The City Council is expected to continue discussions on the parks bond referendum this month. A final decision on whether to place the issue on the November ballot must come before the end of summer.

Board gives preliminary OK to 2022 budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA — There is a sense of optimism in the Fulton County School System as it looks to fiscal year 2022 in positive economic shape despite months of disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teachers and staff are set to get a raise, along with a one-time bonus, the millage rate will not rise, and the district’s “rainy day” fund will remain intact.

“In November 2020 the Fulton County School Board provided a budget direction by setting budget parameters [to follow],” said chief financial officer Marvin Dereef.

“My hope is that it is clear we complied with the parameters.”

The constraints included finding alternative funding sources, allocating at least 75 percent of the general fund to schools, provide a millage rollback to revenueneutral, increasing efficiencies, maintaining competitive compensation for staff and keeping fund balance at a minimum of two months of operating costs.

On May 13, the school board gave tentative approval of the 2022 fiscal year general fund budget of $1.1 billion. The board will formally adopt the budget on June 8.

The general fund budget, which covers all school-based operations, is a $30 million increase from the current year’s budget.

a 2 percent pay increase for all employees, along with a step increase for eligible employees based on years of service.

“Fundamentally we believe that compensation is a ‘mission critical’ lever in retaining and getting top talent,” Chief Financial Officer Ron Wade said.

The goal is not to be the highest-paying district in the metro area, Wade said, but in the top three.

The funds to cover the raises comes from the biggest source of “alternative funding sources,” which is the federal government. The current fiscal year included only $700,000 in federal funding. The 2022 spending plan expects $13.8 million in federal funding.

Over the last year Fulton County Schools has been the recipient of nearly $244 million — the equivalent of $2,700 per student — over three rounds of federal stimulus funding beginning with the Trump administration and continuing under President Joe Biden.

The funds were to help school districts weather the pandemic storm and came with limited restrictions.

In addition to compensation, Fulton County Schools is using stimulus funds on mitigating learning loss, summer school programs and ensuring safe environments in schools.

tax revenues, the FY22 budget still has a nearly $29 million deficit, Dereef said.

That gap will be closed by a drawdown of the district’s healthy reserve funds.

However, Dereef is confident those reserve funds will serve only as placeholder to balance the budget, and will likely not be pulled.

“Even though we are budgeting to use fund balance, we don’t necessarily need it,” Dereef explained. He noted the budget has a built-in five percent contingency for expenditures.

Currently Fulton County Schools has $258 million in its reserve funds, which is more than the targeted two months of expenses.

While there have been some mention of lowering the millage rate from its present 17.796 mils, the tentative budget keeps that rate unchanged. Dereef noted Fulton Schools’ rate is the lowest millage among the five large metro districts.

One mill brings in $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value.

In Georgia, a property’s taxable value equals 40 percent of its appraised — or real — value. A home with a real value of $100,000, for example, would have a taxable value of $40,000.

Currently Fulton County Schools does not have a senior citizen exemption for school taxes, but Dereef said he expects that to be in place in the near future.

Fulton County Schools prioritizes pay in 2022 budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA — The Fulton County School System is earmarking a significant part of its $1.1 billion budget next year to boost employee pay and provide a hiring incentive and retention bonus for special education staff.

The fiscal year 2022 budget includes a 2 percent salary increase for all employees, plus a step increase for eligible staff members. Step increases are built into the salary schedule and provide automatic increases at certain years. The total cost of the salary adjustments is $30 million.

Additionally, special education staff will receive a retention bonus of $600 for para-professionals and $1,200 for teachers. Federal funds tied to the COVID-19 pandemic relief will cover the $2 million cost of the bonuses.

“Staffing special education is difficult,” said Chief Financial Officer Ron Wade. “It’s been critical for the 20 years I’ve [been with the district] and continues to be critical.”

“It needs to be illustrated and be part of our story how this school board and this district values its employees,” Wade said during a recent meeting of the Fulton County School Board.

The tentative FY22 budget was approved by the Fulton County School Board on May 13 and is set to be formally adopted on June 8.

million dedicated solely to employee compensation, which is about 84 percent of the general fund budget. This figure is slightly higher than the current year’s budget which did not include a raise for staff, but did provide a one-time bonus.

Wade said attracting and retaining top employees is critical to the overall success of the district.

“As we look at compensation the school board has asked that we be mindful of the competitiveness of it, as well as the fiscal sustainability,” Wade said.

He noted salaries in Fulton County Schools are near the top among metro Atlanta school districts for new teachers as well as those with 15 or more years of service, and among the middle of the pack

The starting salary next school year for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree is $47,892. Wade noted the majority of the district’s 8,000 teachers hold a master’s degree and have between seven and 18 years with the district. The annual salary in that range is $58,00 to $72,000.

The Fulton School System is also reinstating it “no work no pay” guidelines that were waived for the past year because of the disruption caused by the pandemic.

“The board made some decisions to ensure frontline workers maintain and earn pay, so we did some exceptional things in an exceptional year,” Wade said.

He said that is not sustainable moving forward.

The Current Housing Market: Bubble or No Bubble?

No one is suggesting that home prices will continue to rise at their current pace (up 13% from a year ago), but prices are expected to continue their upward trend

albeit at a much more gradual pace.

How did we get to this point?

Many factors combined to create the “perfect storm” we are experiencing today. The primary culprit is the lack of inventory due to a 10-year deficit in new housing starts. Additionally, mortgage rates close to record lows have continued to attract buyers despite rising prices and an influx of “cash rich” buyers from other markets have played a big role in creating this uber competitive landscape. According to the latest Case Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index, home prices have risen for 10 consecutive months and continue to climb.

What comes next?

Buyers will be relieved to know that housing inventory is projected to increase due to new home construction, the end of the mortgage forbearance program and the increasing comfort level of homeowners who delayed selling due to COVID-19. Sellers can rest assured that even with the influx of homes coming on the market, demand is forecasted to remain strong through 2021.

Those haunted by memories of 2008 can take solace in the fact that the fundamentals of our market today are very different. Lenders are no longer issuing the risky loans that were common in the mortgage industry from 2004 to 2006.

1. Update Your Insulation This will keep the hot air out of your home and the cool air in. If your home is poorly insulated, you could end up spending more money on your electric bill. Many older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years. There are several different types of home insulation: crawl space, roof, ceiling, wall and floor, attic and duct.

You can simply add more insulation on top of existing insulation.

2. Give Your Air Conditioner a Checkup Now is the time to make sure your air conditioning is in perfect working order. You don’t want to wait until it breaks on a hot day to have it inspected. First, turn off the power. On

the inside, wash or vacuum cleanable filters and replace disposable ones.

On the outside, cut the grass, clean out any debris and consider removing plants that block the unit. From there, SafeElectricity.org says you can leave your AC on while you’re away and test it out. If you’re looking for a test that’s a little more detailed, you can turn on the unit and check it with a thermometer.

3. Change Your Ceiling Fan Direction Did you know your ceiling fan is designed to rotate differently depending on the season? Changing your ceiling fan direction seasonally is one of the simplest ways to get the most out of your ceiling fan. In winter months, it should rotate clockwise to help distribute heat that’s risen. In the summer, you should run your fan counterclockwise at higher speeds to push cool air down to the floor. Even though the ceiling fan does not reduce the temperature inside of the room, it does help the room feel cooler. It has also been found that the average ceiling fan can lower a room’s temperature by four to five degrees. Check to see which direction the fans in your home are moving, and, if necessary, hit the small black switch near the base to change directions.

Yearbook students chronicle ‘year that wasn’t’ for posterity

BY TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — When the pandemic put the world on lockdown last year, schools were the first to close.

No mingling with classmates, no hugs, no group photos.

That left Alpharetta High School yearbook staff in a bind. But, production continued in the absence of all other organized social events.

Megan Eng, yearbook editor-in-chief, said with half of the student body attending school online, it was difficult to incorporate the entire student body on the pages. One of the biggest hurdles was relying on social media and other messaging tools to reach out to students.

The theme of the yearbook was set well before the pandemic transformed school operations: “You just don’t know us.”

Eng drew her inspiration from a desire to showcase and get to the essence of students at Alpharetta High School because a person is more than the image you see.

“I wanted to highlight how you see students, and you don’t really know them that well,” she said. “You can assume things that they’re associated with — clubs and friends — but truly when you get to know them, there’s a lot more beneath the surface.”

Eng said each student has unique stories to tell, and the yearbook is an outlet for them to showcase those stories.

“We wanted to help give them a platform to share what was important to them,” Eng said.

It was easier said than done.

Eng said getting timely responses, securing photos was a hassle.

The simple act of collaborating with staff was another challenge. New staff members are traditionally coached by senior staffers on the job. Staff get to know one another with social activities, and they also host professional workshops during the summer on how to use the software and improve camera skills.

The importance of communicating through a screen became essential for students to learn from one another and fill each spread of the yearbook. At least two staffers were assigned to each spread.

This year’s staff include: Eng, Avery Rose, Daley O’Brien, Sweya Surapaneni, Daniella Clayborn, Addie Allen, Sydney Umusu, Griffith Allen, Maia Capuuano, Danielle Clayborn, Paige Goss, Megan Moore, Anyce Murray, Anna Suaunders and Sam Rivas.

Eng has been on staff since eighth grade. She became editor-in-chief this year as a senior. Over the years, she said she has developed a good work ethic and the ability to collaborate with others.

“I’ve learned to show what I am capable of [by] doing my best on these pages so that I am putting out work that I’m proud of, and that’s something I can carry throughout my life,” Eng said.

Rita Flowers, Alpharetta High School English teacher and yearbook adviser, said the staff has accomplished something special by producing a yearbook during a pandemic.

“I am most proud that they’ve worked through this,” Flowers said.

“There was really a team effort, and everybody tried to help everyone [in some way],” Flowers said. “We got the book done and we were there for each other.

[The students] never gave up when things got rough.”

We’ve been here in North Fulton operating our farm, providing equestrian services, summer camps, wedding, corporate and other special events, for more than 25 years. The farm is our home—we’ve literally been operating before Milton ever became a city in 2006. Despite that, the City of Milton is now telling us that we need to apply for special use permits to continue operating the same way we’ve been operating all these years.

On June 7, the Milton City Council will vote on three different permit applications: 1) a permit that essentially covers our children’s activities like birthday parties; 2) a permit that is supposed to cover our more adult-type functions such as weddings, corporate, and other special group events; and 3) a permit for the ticketed outdoor music series, Uncorked, hosted on the farm monthly between November 2020 and December 2021.

We don’t believe we need these permits since our operations pre-date the city, but in an effort to be good citizens and responsible neighbors, we’ve made application with assistance from an experienced land use and zoning attorney.

We really thought these applications would be a formality, but now we have a very small handful of neighbors who are voicing opposition to what we’ve done for years, creating confusion about the permits and conditions, and sharing misinformation about the Farm’s operations. It is important to share that the Farm has the unwavering support of 5 of our neighbors who own property immediately adjacent to the farm, and more than 1,000 hand-written Milton signatures on a support petition. This a start—but it’s not enough to help us prevail on June 7. That’s where you can help!

If you are a Milton resident, we need you to reach out to the Milton City Council and show your support in writing before the public hearing and vote on June 7. (We will take any and all emails of support, but Milton residents definitely carry more weight with local officials during a vote.)

North Fulton sports teams have another banner year in 2021-21

The Georgia High School Association wrapped up the 2020-21 season last week.

Cheerleading Though no local cheer squad captured a state title, several programs had strong showing at the state meet last fall.

Fellowship Christian was 5th in ClassA Private competition, and Cambridge was third in Class 6A with Johns Creek in 10th.

Milton, winners of the 2017-18 Co-Ed state title, placed fourth in Co-Ed competition.

Cross-country Cambridge earned North Fulton another cross-country state championship last fall with the Bears capturing their second 6A team state title in four years.

The Cambridge girls also had a strong showing but fell just short of a state title four-peat. The Bears placed third in team scores.

In Class 7A, Milton’s Hayden Marshall placed third overall at the state meet, leading the Eagles to a fifth-place finish in boys team scores. The Milton girls placed ninth overall.

The Blessed Trinity girls had a stellar showing in Class 5A competition, placing all five scoring runners in the top-15, but the Titans fell short of St. Pius X to place second in team scores. Hannah Miniutti, the 2019 state champion, led BT with a third-place finish.

Football The 2020 football season marked the first year since 2014 no North Fulton teams vied for a state title and it was the first

year since 2016 no local squad raised a state championship trophy.

The North Fulton football season ended abruptly on Dec. 11 with Fellowship Christian, Blessed Trinity and Milton taking losses in the quarterfinals. All three teams had either won or played in a state final since 2015.

However, those teams did capture region titles. Milton won its third straight 5-7A championship, Blessed Trinity won its third straight and sixth in seven seasons and Fellowship Christian earned its third state title in five years.

Volleyball After years of deep playoff runs and state runner-up placements, Alpharetta volleyball broke through in 2020 to capture the program’s first state championship.

The title came in the Raiders’ first year in Class 7A. The Raiders matched up with juggernaut Walton in the state finals, winners of

nine of the last 10 volleyball state championships.

Alpharetta stood toe-to-toe with Walton, and after dropping the first set by eight points, rebounded to win the next three in a tightly matched and exciting match.

Blessed Trinity also reached the state finals in the program’s first year in 5A play after capturing the 2019 4A championship. The Titans fell short of title No. 8, though, falling to another powerhouse, McIntosh, in four sets.

St. Francis also had a notable season with the Knights compiling a historic run to the final four of the state tournament.

Basketball The 2020-21 North Fulton basketball season was another banner year for local squads with the boys teams of Mount Pisgah and Milton lifting a state title trophy.

Milton, ranked as the top team in Georgia throughout the year, lived up to the hype with the Eagles capturing the program’s third state title and first since 2012.

After a stellar regular season, the Eagles reached the 7A finals and suited up against Berkmar. Milton trailed for much of the contest, but outscored Berkmar 18-6 down the stretch to take a thrilling 52-47 win.

The Eagles later competed on the national stage in the Geico Nationals tournament.

The 2020-21 campaign was also a dream season for Mount Pisgah, who won its first state championship in Class-A Private.

The Patriots trailed by 7 points with two minutes remaining but went on a 10-0 run to close out the game.

With 10 seconds remaining and the game tied, Mount Pisgah’s Kasheem Grady stole the ball from a Holy Innocents’ player, dribbled quickly downed the court and swished an off-balance jump shot as time expired to cap off Mount Pisgah’s incredible late comeback for its state title.

Another North Fulton team, the St. Francis girls, reached the state finals.

The Knights were seeking their fourth state championship since 2013 but fell to Hebron Christian in the Class-A Private championship game.

Swim and dive For the fourth straight season a North Fulton team stood atop the podium at the GHSA swim and dive state championships, and for the second time in three seasons, one of those squads was the Johns Creek boys.

The Gladiators outpaced the field by over 100 points, led by strong relay finishes and an individual state title from Andrew Simmons in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Cambridge girls were second in Class 6A team scores, led by a state title from Sophie Brison, Jayla Brown, Claire Kerber and Kate Kerber in the medley relay.

Centennial swimmers captured several individual state titles. Madeline Singletary, Allison Kasik and Sebastian Sergile each won a championship, with Sergile taking the win in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

Milton’s Cooper Cook won the Class 7A 200-freestyle championship and Alpharetta’s Alicia Henry was crowned champ in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Dance King’s Ridge dance captured the A-2A state title in hip hop competition at the GHSA dance state invitational Feb. 13.

Wrestling Mount Pisgah swept the GHSA wrestling state competitions, capturing the Class-A Private titles at the dual and traditional meets.

On Jan. 30, the Patriots won the dual championship with eight wrestlers going 3-0 in the tournament.

Just a few weeks later, the Patriots were again at the top of the podium, taking the team title at the traditional meet behind state titles from David Bertrand, Joey Bertrand, Josh Noble and Tyler

Milton’s Ben Williams completed an undefeated season to take the 170-lb. state title in 7A competition at the traditional meet.

Baseball North Fulton’s drought of baseball state championships continued for the fifth straight year in 2021, but several teams had notable seasons and captured region crowns.

Blessed Trinity captured an incredible ninth straight region title this year, the program’s first in Region 5-5A. While BT continued that streak, their run of trips to the final four of that state playoffs came to an end. The Titans were eliminated by St. Pius X in the second round, ending their seven-year streak of reaching the semifinals.

In Class-A Private, Fellowship Christian put together a historic season. The Paladins, who won the Region 6-A championship, reached the state semifinals for the first time in program history and went 25-8 on the year.

Golf Johns Creek and Milton boys golf continued North Fulton’s run of capturing golf state championships in May. Johns Creek kept its own streak alive, extending their state title streak to five seasons in 6A. The Milton boys captured its first state title since 2012, leading the field throughout the two-day tournament to take the win by 16 strokes. Three Milton players placed in the top-5 in individual scores.

Other notable finishes include a state runner-up placement by the Northview girls in 5A, a fourth-place finish by the Alpharetta girls and a fourth-place finish from the Cambridge boys.

Gymnastics Cambridge gymnastics finished third in team scores in the Class 6A-7A state meet in April. Lia McSweeney finished fifth in bars competition and Anna Draper was fourth on the beam.

Lacrosse North Fulton’s dominance in state lacrosse competition continued this year with local teams capturing three of four state titles.

Milton girls lacrosse continued its astonishing reign with the program’s 14th state championship in 16 seasons, completing a perfect, 21-0 season with a 13-8 win over West Forsyth in the 6A-7A title game.

The Blessed Trinity girls also continued their run as a powerhouse in A-5A play. The Titans captured their fourth state title in five years with a win over Starr’s Mill May 14.

Soccer Four local teams earned trips to the soccer state finals in May with two capturing championships.

The Blessed Trinity girls raised their first state title trophy since 2011 following a 2-1 win over St. Pius X. It was the program’s sixth overall state finals win.

Tennis The Cambridge girls and Johns Creek boys continued North Fulton’s streak of tennis state championships in May. At least one North Fulton boys or girls tennis team has won a state title every year since 2005.

Johns Creek and Cambridge each defended their Class 6A championships.

Johns Creek won its third straight title, while Cambridge captured its second consecutive title and third in five seasons.

Other local teams also competed in the tennis finals with the Cambridge boys falling to Johns Creek for the 6A boys crown. The Johns Creek girls faced Cambridge in the girls finals.

Track and field The final championship trophies for North Fulton teams in the 2020-21 season went to local track and field athletes, with the Alpharetta and Blessed Trinity boys each earning team titles in their classification.

The Raiders stood atop the podium in their first year in 7A, edging Marietta by two points with CJ McFerrin winning 300-meter hurdles title and leading the 4x400 relay team to a finals win.

Blessed Trinity won its first team state championship with Benjamin Rothering earning an individual crown in the 3200-meter run.

Timing is everything I have gone to the same beach for the last almost 30 years.

It’s remote and almost empty most of the time — a barrier island 5 miles out into the Gulf only accessible by boat, plane, or a long RAY APPEN 5-mile swim. There are no stores, restaurants, roads, convenience stores or theaters.

When I walk or run the beach, I almost always go east. However, this last visit I only went, for some reason, west, unfortunately.

A friend just called and mentioned to me that they just heard that a visitor

from California, who was staying in the Clark house was walking east — along the same area that I usually walk — and found a spearhead. Mind you this was not just any piece of flint.

Many years ago, my wife Christina found one, also in the same general area, walking east. It was a bit larger than half the size of your palm, and when we looked it up, because of the markings, the size, and the location, we are fairly sure it was about 5,000 years old.

I “should’a walked East,” I guess.

But wait, there’s more. So, what was the day-job of this person who stumbled on this 5,000-year-old spearhead? Well, in her down time at the beach, and using her iPhone as a hot spot, she was also actively managing the team controlling the rover on the surface of Mars. Really. No, I’m serious.

I have been on a tear reading lately. Here are a couple I especially enjoyed.

The Code Breaker by Walter Isakson who also wrote the biography of Leonardo DaVinci as well as Steve Jobs. Code Breaker is about the woman — Jennifer Doudna — who, along with Emmanuelle Charpentier, won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2020. They jointly helped develop CRISPR, the gene editing tool that will ultimately help cure genebased diseases such as Huntington’s, Sycle Cell Anemia, Alzheimer’s and more. The book is an easy read and explains complex ideas in a very accessible way. It is also a fascinating read, especially because it talks about the work up through August of 2020 that both women did in creating the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines way before either company was involved. And finally, the book also puts a spotlight on the critical role that women have had in modern science and leadership.

Anne Lamont’s new book, Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage, is another good one. It has been a number of years since her last book, and she is back on her game with this one. More later, but here is a quote from her new book that is representative of classic Anne: “Help and humor save us. Goodness and courage are how the divine presents itself so often — whether in drag, as close friends, or as EMTs.” helping drive something about 35 million miles away from Earth, pushes me past my envelope I think — gives me goosebumps.

Kind of ironic in an off sort of way. What are the odds of that combination? Can we say “infinitesimal?” What’s past that?

Actually, these days, in my old age, I

no longer think that anything that happens is random or happenstance. I think that there is probably a reason for everything; we just don’t always know what it is. I am absolutely sure that I don’t know why that woman was supposed to find that spearhead and not me, yet.

After explosion number five or six, it starts to get a little boring.

So my attention wanders, and my gaze drifts over to reality show number two. This one is right outside the big picture window to the right of the fireplace, where just last week I hung up another hummingbird feeder. There are three of them there now, plus a whole bunch of flowering plants that have been lovingly selected for their hummingbird appeal.

Should you happen to be a hummingbird, and should you happen to fly by our back deck, the sight of all that is will surely be irresistible. So, I hope you will hum your way over to the feeders or the flowers, hover in midair, and have a little snack before zooming off to do whatever it is that hummingbirds do in their spare time.

Yes, it’s true. Folks had warned us that hummer watching can be seriously addictive, and they are right. Watching hummingbirds turns out to be a lot more fun than watching just about any TV show, with the possible exception of the legendary “pickles” episode of Andy of Mayberry.

And so we watch the window, more and more, and every now and then…

Hudson: Continued from Page 26 there it was — a tiny, winged jewel holding motionless in the air not a foot beyond the window glass, pausing to drink the nectar that I’d made up just that morning. It sipped a few sips, then moved to the next feeder and did the same thing. Then for dessert, it zipped over to the nearby planter, where I’ve been tending some bright yellow lantana plants (another hummingbird favorite, I’d learned). After a few more moments, temporarily sated, our tiny, feathered visitor darted away.

We’ve been seeing more and more of these flying jewels the last week or so. Usually it’s been just one at a time, but once or twice now there have been two at once.

I should be able to tell you what kind they are. But (like my newfound interest in wildflowers…and thank you, Livia, for the great suggestion on the wildflower identification guide!) I’m still learning.

There’s a lot to learn too, not the least of which is how to set up and maintain our hummingbird feeders.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far.

First, if you hang a feeder, the hummers will come – eventually.

It’s very different than when we put up that seed feeder over there by the deck rail.

With that one, it seemed like our feathered friends started arriving almost before I’d finished adding the birdseed.

But hummingbirds seem to take longer.

For several days the hummingbird feeder

just hung there. It’s possible that some came and went so quickly that we missed ‘em, but we have learned that there’s definitely an element of the waiting game here.

Second, you’ve got to feed them right.

The experts are pretty much unanimous that what I should provide for these birds is homemade nectar made by mixing one part ordinary cane sugar and four parts water. Regular sugar is what you want, and (as I’ve been told by just about everybody) do not add any food coloring to it. Just sugar and water is all it takes. The colors of the feeder do the rest.

Third, some maintenance is required.

You’ll need to clean the feeder and replace the nectar every day or so, especially as it gets hotter. I do this now pretty much every day. It only takes a moment, and that way I can be sure that any hummingbirds who do come by will have something fresh to dine on.

Next on the list is to hang up multiple feeders. More feeders means more opportunities!

And that brings us to number five: “give ‘em room.” These little creatures are fiercely territorial, and if you space out the feeders a little bit you’ll created more “territories” for them to occupy.

And if you add a few perches (I suppose that’s number six) then you’ll be providing resting places too for more hummers once the word gets around.

Attracting hummingbirds is fun. We are having a blast with it – a blast that’s a lot more rewarding than yet another explosion on that TV screen. Besides…

“There’s one!”

Sorry. Got to go!

State School Superintendent Richard Woods said the accomplishments of this year’s scholars is even more impressive this year because of the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Like their counterparts in the class of 2020, they dealt with the sudden shutdown of in-person schooling in March of last year,” Woods said. “Then they persevered through a school year that was unlike any we have ever seen before and [still] excelled.”

“This has allowed us to provide inperson instruction with the least disruption possible [this year],” Looney said.

“We plan to continue with this approach as we move into summer learning and the new 2021-22 school year in August.”

The decision to waive the mask mandate was hotly debated on social

media, with more than 300 comments posted to the district’s Facebook page both pro and con in the day following the announcement.

A spokesman for the Fulton County School said that reaction was expected.

“As you have seen on social media, there is a mixed reaction, but that has been the case throughout the pandemic,” said communications chief officer Brian Noyes.

North Fulton board member Katie Reeves said she supports Looney’s decision and is confident it reflects his

commitment to always follow science and data.

“Even though I know there are people who will be concerned [by this decision] I know there also many who will be relieved,” Reeves said. “I am glad that we have mask options for those who still do not feel safe.”

The issue of face masks has become increasingly divisive over the past few months. During a Fulton Board of Education meeting in May some audience members were escorted out of the board chambers for refusing orders to mask up.
