Alpharetta plans virtual Memorial Day tribute ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The City of Alpharetta and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta will host a Virtual Memorial Day Tribute at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25. The ceremony will feature a combination of live and recorded content that will be livestreamed from Brooke Street Park behind Alpharetta City Hall. The public is invited to tune into the program at youtube.com/alpharettagov.

“While we are observing Memorial Day in a very different way this year due to social distancing, we knew it was important to provide a way for our community to honor the heroes who gave their lives

and go back to my old, normal life,” Singh said. “But then I wonder, is this the new normal?”

Singh said she had not realized the social environment being in school afforded her until it was halted by the pandemic. She says her social time is now spent texting and calling people digitally, but those means of interactSINGH ing do not give her the level of social satisfaction she desires.

She especially feels for those who have even less interaction. Prior to the pandemic, Singh said she and her family volunteered on weekends at a nearby Arbor Terrace assisted living center.

“Now I look at the news and see that the retirement homes are also undergoing quarantine,” she said. “And it breaks my heart, because the seniors can’t even have their family members visit them or have people from outside come in to entertain them. And all they can do is stay inside the building every day, hoping that they can see their family once this is all over.”

There are also the stories of those who are unemployed or homeless, Singh said.

Wanting to help in some way, Singh asked

her mother to donate funds to those is need, and she agreed to do so. Singh said she has always wanted to be a doctor and help people, and the pandemic has increased that desire as she watches medical workers risking their lives “to make sure that ours are still intact.”

Though middle school years are a mostly carefree time, the pandemic does still weigh heavy on those entering their teenage years.

“It’s not so bad to not leave the house to go shopping or go out to eat every once in a while, which has led me to believe that in these times we should all be close to our dear ones and care about our families,” she said. “It’s weird because there are days when I’m having the time of my life just staying at home and relaxing, but then there are the times when the discombobulated feelings of helplessness, boredom and loneliness plague my time alone.”

But, there are some silver linings.

“To my surprise, quarantine has also brought many good changes in my life, such as me trying to eat healthier, work out way more than I did before, and just change my lifestyle for the better,” Singh said. “Despite no apparent end of this virus in sight, I hope quarantine brings out the best in me, in society and in nature.”

Next, there will be a reading of four “Letters Home” sharing correspondence sent home from soldiers during World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War and The War in Afghanistan by presenter Marty Farrell.

Former U.S. Army Ranger 75th Ranger Regiment Grant McGarry will

give the keynote address.

McGarry, is a best-selling author of “A Night in the Pech Valley” and a combat veteran with five deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in the War on Terror. Upon graduation in 2006 from the University of Alabama with a degree in finance, Grant reported to Fort Benning with an enlistment contract “for the hardest thing the Army has to offer.”

The program will then feature a “We Remember” video with moving images of past and present U.S. military service members. The event will close with a playing of “Taps” by Nick Amundson.

The Roswell Memorial Day service, the largest in Georgia, has been cancelled.

Early voting locations open for June 9 election FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Early voting for the June 9 Georgia Presidential Primary and Special Election began May 18 at a number of locations across North Fulton County.

Registered voters can visit polling stations through June 5. Special polling sites are open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday, May 30. Early voting will not be held on Sundays or on Memorial Day. Votes cast during the early voting period and absentee ballots will be counted at the time of the June 9 election in accordance with Secretary of State guidelines.

Those visiting polling sites are asked to wear a face covering and practice social distancing out of consideration for fellow voters.

King’s Ridge school names Spurka as head of Secondary Education MILTON, Ga. — King’s Ridge Christian School has announced Edward Spurka as the school’s new head of secondary education for the 2020-21 academic year. Spurka has more than 25 years of academic leadership experience in North Metro Atlanta. In 1995, he moved to Georgia to teach at South Forsyth High School before transferring to Milton High School, where he was promoted to school administration. After serving one year as an assistant principal in Gwinnett County, he served as assistant principal and later principal at Roswell High School.

Spurka was named the founding principal at Cambridge High School in 2012, and he most recently served as Head of School for Pinecrest Academy in Forsyth County.

“Having spent years in education serving North Fulton communities as a school leader, I have always had a deep level of respect and appreciation for King’s Ridge Christian School and the mission, values, and standards the school continues to embody and portray,” Spurka said.

Spurka is a four-time recipient of the Governor’s High-Performance Principal award, and he was twice named as the Outstanding Principal of the Year by the Georgia PTA.

Struggle to fill needs continues for Forsyth’s Meals by Grace

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Meals by Grace has provided tens of thousands of meals in recent weeks, but the organization still faces an increased demand while supplies dwindle.

From March 13 to May 8, Meals by Grace provided more than 60,000 meals to around 6,000 children and their families, but there is a grim outlook for securing enough food to continue that rate.

“Food banks are at their worst, not even providing 20 percent of what we need — mainly shelf-stable food,” the nonprofit’s Executive Director Suellen Daniels said.

With limited supplies at food banks, the organization is now having to turn to buying food at retail cost, which requires more funds for fewer supplies.

“We’ve no option left, given the amount of food we need to feed the numbers of those in need, but to begin purchasing what we can find, retail,” Daniels said. “At this point, it’s a toss up between desperately needing food and dollars with which to have on hand to make quick purchases when we do find something.

Supplies in stores are ‘iffy,’ and none are yet fully and sufficiently stocked, either.”

Daniels said Dollar Tree appears to be the most affordable options for her organization’s needs.

“Some community folks shop regularly at Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s and bring us bulk stuff, but if we’re buying, we have to find the cheapest sources, and Dollar Tree seems to be it,” Daniels said.

Prior to the increased demand on food banks brought on by the pandemic, Daniels said she could order 100 boxes of frozen meat and 100 boxes of mixed canned goods every week at a cost of 16 cents per pound, far less than retail prices, from the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.

It is not just higher prices that are creating the problem, though.

“Our orders with [Georgia Mountain Food Bank] have been limited by a lack of supply to maybe 25 percent of normal,” Daniels said. “Even that amount is not always available. Last week we were finally able to get a few boxes of miscellaneous canned goods. Some weeks we could only pick up eggs.”

When food can be sourced, storage space can be an issue. Daniels said Atlanta Community Food Bank’s inventory mostly offers frozen bulk food and a minimum order of 1,200 pounds. That amount requires more freezer space than Meals by Grace can accommodate.

Also, thawing, then distributing some of the food and refreezing the rest presents health hazards.

Ways to help Meals by Grace Executive Director Suellen Daniels said food items needed most include: canned fruits and vegetables, soups, boxed cereal, boxed macaroni and cheese, fruit/applesauce cups and large, heavy duty paper grocery bags.

Funds can also be donated at mealsbygrace.org, or by texting “FeedKidsNow” to 44321.

The organization also needs volunteers.

“Because we deliver to the front porch of some families that just don’t have regular, reliable or available transportation to get to a food pantry, we need lots of volunteers,” Daniels said. “We have opportunities just about every day of the week.

School social workers have given us personal referrals of families in the most critical need. We must be active responders to help them. To do that, we must have heroes, volunteers to help get the food prepared and delivered to them.”

A calendar of volunteer opportunities is available at mealsbygrace.org.

“We are maintaining available supplies of all pre-existing safety precautions like gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, [a] clean environment, teams of 10 or less and social distancing spaces isolated from other teams. All for the continued safety of our volunteers when they are serving with us.”

The end of the school year will also mark the end of some school-provided meals that have been distributed at bus stops in the area.

“What this means is the families who were able to access even that little bit of extra food will now no longer have that and will have to seek additional sources like Meals by Grace to provide for their children’s basic needs,” Daniels said.

Meals by Grace still has restaurant and distributor partners who provide what they can, she said, and that food goes out the door a soon as it arrives.

The organization is “eagerly awaiting” a potential gift of boxed meals from the USDA through its Lion’s Club partner, which will be delivered and distributed in the same day.

A bright spot for the upcoming weeks is the anticipation of receiving $25,000 in donated funds raised by Alpharetta Rotary’s Donation Derby event held earlier this month.

MILTON, Ga. — It’s been three years since Chris Harbour began working for the Walt Disney Company, but the former Northwestern Middle School drama teacher says he still sees his time at Milton as one of the highlights of his life.

“It was an absolute dream job, everything about it,” Harbour said. “And I loved all the students I worked with… Sometimes I do still miss that program and my trailer.”

After graduating from Columbus State in theatre education in 2005 and a short stint at as a drama teacher in Alabama, Harbour was drawn to Fulton County in 2007 on rumors that the school system was attempting to start a new drama program at Northwestern Middle School. It was the perfect storm of creative freedom for Harbour.

“I fell in love with Northwestern,” Harbour said. “Whoever they hired would have the freedom to create everything: the curriculum, the extracurricular program, all of it. There would be no former teacher to compare to. Everything was fresh and me being still practically

dents completely embraced the idea of doing theatre at NMS, helped largely by the already successful program at Milton across the street,” he said. “It never ceased to amaze me what middle students were capable of, and the time spent in the Milton community was such a period of growth and one that I always look back on with gratitude.”

Harbour says some of his favorite memories at Northwestern include teaching his eighth grade Connections class and producing the “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” musical his second year, where he saw the chorus and drama departments work together.

While teaching, Harbour also became increasingly involved in Atlanta’s theatre scene, volunteered at Children’s Healthcare and worked at Young Life. Eventually, he said, all of his passions came together, and he realized he could fulfill a childhood dream: working for Disney.

That dream came true in 2017 when Harbour began working for the Disney English program to teach English as a second language in China. He uses Disney’s familiar brand and characters to teach the children through acting, songs and games.

Chambers team up to offer regional online job fairs Sessions will target specific industries

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — The resources of two area chambers of commerce have begun a collaboration to connect industries with potential labor forces in a series of virtual hiring events.

The Greater North Fulton Chamber and Forsyth County Chamber are hosting online events that will feature representatives from local employers who will briefly discuss open positions, qualifications and how job seekers can apply.

Attendees will also be able to participate in a break-out session with employers to ask questions about their company and specific opportunities.

“This is definitely new territory for all of us,” said Kali Boatright, president and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber.

The Chamber’s focus over the past nine months, she said, has been launching and nurturing its new job website, northfultonjobs.com. Director of Economic and Talent Development Mark Goodman has been responsible for the launch and assisted in the collaboration with Forsyth County for the virtual job fair, Boatright said.

Right now, employers and employees are hurting, some industries more than others, Goodman said.

“Food service and hospitality is still kind of lagging behind,” he said. “The restaurants that do want to open are having struggles finding workers. Manufacturing and assembly work, they seem to be needing people.”

Construction seems to be the only sector that hasn’t slowed over the past couple of months, he added.

Boatright said she hopes the job fair will be one more tool the chamber can use to help get businesses back on track.

“So many of them, you know their hearts are broken that they have had to lay off or furlough employees,” she said.

“This really gives them an opportunity as they come back to be able to expand workforces if that’s what they need to do, but also for those employees to find solid, local jobs. That’s what we’re really working on and why we collaborated on this.”

Laura Stewart, vice president with the Forsyth County Chamber, said that since the pandemic hit in early March, the organization has stepped up efforts to regularly survey members to get a read on what types of assistance could be offered.

said the Chamber wanted to get ahead of the curve.

“Now, as businesses begin to reopen, we know that some of those employers are going to be looking to build back their workforce, and we are trying to give them a platform to do that.”

Prior to this season, the Forsyth Chamber had only dealt with in-person job fairs. How to execute one online was something different.

In a virtual setting, she said, it makes sense to split sessions by industry. Part of that is logistics — cyber sessions can be difficult to manage when the number of participants and interests are massive. Also, businesses are different, and certain employers are looking for specific skills in their applicants.

It just made sense to stagger the sessions by industry, Stewart said, because job seekers and employers would be of like mind when attending the online sessions.

“We partnered with our friends at the Greater North Fulton Chamber because we realized that employment doesn’t have county borders,” Stewart said.

The North Fulton Chamber has been a great partner and helped bring in a lot of employers and supply information on how to conduct an online job fair, she said.

There is no cost for job seekers or employers to participate.

The first session, which focused on manufacturing, was held May 15.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — In the near future, hundreds of Hopewell Middle School students will have their names listed as co-investigators on a NASA published document.

Students at the school have been participating in the ExoLab Leguminaut Challenge, collecting a myriad of information on the growth of legumes and their relationship to a bacteria that could potentially give rise to growing food in microgravity and on Mars.

As students grow their own legume plants and document their findings, they can simultaneously watch the progress of the same species growing on the International Space Station, orbiting some 254 miles above Earth. Cameras on the station snap a photo of the plants each hour with figures that can be tracked, such as carbon dioxide levels, allowing students to compare their findings.

Hopewell teacher Steve Jones has been using the experiments, run by STEM education organization Magnitude, as a part of his 9-week elective

course to connect 7th grade students to space.

“Students in the classroom have the exact same experiment going, and then are able to have access to live data from the [International] Space Station to compare what happens in the classroom versus what’s happening in the station,” Jones said. “The great thing is having so many different eyes looking at all this all the time is somebody is going to see something that somebody else didn’t. And I keep telling the students, that’s what they’re doing, they’re helping find something that no one has seen before.”

The experiments go beyond our world, but they also shrink it. Hopewell students can also compare their information with classrooms around the nation and other countries, such as Germany, Ethiopia and South Africa.

“It gives our students the opportunity to interact with people around the world to see they are part of a bigger picture than what is just going on in my classroom in Milton, Georgia,” Jones said.

Legumes have been the focal point of the research. Legumes have high concentrations of protein and carbohydrates and can serve as a natural fertilizer, making them an attractive food source and crop for life beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Hopewell students have been studying the relationship between legume plants and bacteria strain Rhizobium and its potential to make regolith, the non-organic surface material on Mars, viable as a medium for growing plants, and what legume plant is best suited to be grown in space.

Magnitude CEO Ted Tagami said such experiments are even more crucial for those in middle school. In 20 years,

he said, there are expectations to put a person on the surface of Mars. And in two decades, Jones’ students will be around 34 years old, the average age of a NASA astronaut.

“They are the Mars generation,” Tagami said.

While the coronavirus pandemic has altered Jones’ instruction, he has sent participating students two varieties of legume seeds to be grown at home. The plants and the surrounding conditions, such as soil, light and water, are being monitored and documented.

Jones said he has not given his students any particular directions for the experiment, and the resulting data could be more beneficial with so many factors considered.

“They are doing it on their own, and they are doing a really good job,” he said.

The information will form a collective study on which legume will be sent to the International Space Station next year in Magnitude’s next mission.

Magnitude also offers a database in which students and instructors can start their classroom or home experiments at any time and sync it to the start of a previous cycle on the space station.

Jones said his students have enjoyed the experiments, and many have asked to stay with the program after their 9-week course at Hopewell has been completed.

“This is an opportunity to bring learning right to the edge of human discovery,” Tagami said. “And kids are smart, you just have to give them the chance to be smart.”

The keyboard expert If the coronavirus has shown us anything, there are far more epidemiologists, virologists and health experts in America than most could have ever imagined.

Well, if you consider the comments being JOE PARKER Reporter thrown around on joe@appenmediagroup.com social media, anyway.

It seems as if far more of those around us are experts on this new virus than those who actually hold positions or offices that deem them far more knowledgeable in such matters.

These newly minted health experts take up arms, in this case, keyboards, to combat these “so-called” experts at every turn. They dismiss anything they say that does not conform to what they want to hear. They label any article that does not paint a rosy outlook for the pandemic as “fearmongering,” Dunwoody Crier 5/21/20regardless Crossword of what information the article contains.

Because of course, they know the truth.

They have turned heroes — those working to combat this virus head-on from behind desks, in hospitals and in laboratories — into villains.

But everyone is still entitled to their opinion, even if it has no factual basis.

And most of these statements and social media comments can be ignored, but those who are still spewing that COVID-19 is a “hoax,” or “basically the flu,” or “has only killed” what this person suggests is insignificant numbers, are despicable.

That is because there are people who see these comments who have been impacted greatly by this virus and know a hell of a lot more about it than a twit belching out incredibly callous statements while hiding behind a keyboard.

And hiding they are, because I can simply not believe there are those in this world who could actually be so heartless as to say these things, face to face, to people who have been devastated by the virus.

Look Hilary New in the eye and tell her things are being “blown out of proportion.” Her 65-year old mother from Rome, Georgia, contracted the virus in early March. New’s mother told her to “pull the plug” if she had to be placed on a ventilator, and her daughter had to make the gut-wrenching decision to comply.

Tell Chanda Grubbs, a North Carolina woman who lost her husband and father of three children, Adrien, to coronavirus that the virus is “not a big deal.”

Face Linda Green and tell her “it’s pretty much just the flu.” Her 37-year old daughter Brent, a Georgia native and mother of twin 12-year old boys, died from coronavirus without having any preexisting conditions.

Call up Nancy Hopkins of South Carolina who was unable to visit or speak to her father in the hospital as he died from COVID-19 that it’s “just a hoax.”

Tell your neighbor that a virus that has killed 80,000 people in our nation alone, that these “so-called health experts” are fearmongering.

If a person can still stand by those statements as they meet those whose lives have been devastated by this impact, they are not an enlightened person. They are unbelievably callous.

Sports journalism students scramble with lack of athletic events to cover Local grads hone craft outside of empty fields

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA — The coronavirus pandemic put a hard stop to sports at all levels in mid-March, leaving sports journalists out in the cold.

Filling TV airtime and newspaper pages without any games to cover, most seasoned writers have made due adjusting to the altered landscape.

But with the complete absence of live games, those studying sports journalism in school are facing an added burden.

Carlo Finlay, assistant director of Grady Sports Media at the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication at UGA, said the adjustment for his classes been significant.

“It has been tough,” Finlay said.

“Our first class, intro to sports journalism, is based on going to a sports game, and when that disappears, what do we do?”

Finlay said this semester had been building up to covering the NCAA Final Four Media Day in Atlanta, and the cancellation of the event was hard on his students.

“We have helped them come up with story ideas and did what we could, but without live sporting events, it’s not the same,” he said.

Amelia Ray Green, a 2018 graduate of Cambridge High School, is wrapping up her second year at the University of Georgia. She is a public relations major with an English minor and is pursuing a sports media certificate from UGA’s Grady College.

Along with her classmates, Green’s studies were completely altered by the cancellation and postponement of sports seasons. Instead of covering live events, Green compiled pieces on prior seasons, created an infographic and story on Baylor’s men’s basketball and compiled an article on the impact to senior runners in Blessed Trinity’s track and field program.

However, those assignments do not fully replace covering live events.

“Nothing can match or compare with the real-life experience of sports,” Green said. “That’s the point of going to things like [the Final Four media day] and games. You learn so much from talking to people and by doing and learning from your mistakes.”

Recently, most of her time has been spent polishing pieces she had com-

piled before the pandemic.

Green credited her instructors for pivoting the curriculum on almost no notice.

“The professors did a good job of helping us continue developing our skills,” she said. “UGA itself has done an outstanding job in handling this situation.”

The pandemic’s impact to Green’s education extends beyond the classroom. She applied for 10 summer internships. All of them have been nixed.

Cecily Stoute, a sophomore at UGA and graduate of Chattahoochee High School, had a slew of events set for the spring, from the Final Four media day to Atlanta United matches, UGA women’s basketball games and UGA gymnastics meets.

“My sports reporting class was directly affected,” Stoute said. “It pretty much caused a halt in all our upcoming projects.”

As a substitute, Green reported on factors and critical stats that led to the success of LSU men’s basketball in the abbreviated 2019-20 season, and she wrote a piece on how three former Chattahoochee football players are dealing with the pandemic.

Stoute said she was drawn to sports journalism to keep in the game if she decides not to extend her athletic career to the professional level. In addition to covering sports, Stoute is a defender on the women’s soccer team at UGA. “Honestly, that has been the toughest part from this whole thing,” she said. “Having no clue when we can go back to training is really hard. I don’t have many resources, and there is only so much you can do on your own when soccer is a team sport. I definitely miss my team and our field.”

As all sports fans await the return of all live sports, Green is ready to jump back into what she believes will be a reinvigorated sports atmosphere.

“I’ve come to realize that sports is so much more than numbers and how athletes perform,” Green said.

“It’s the community glue for some cities, and now more than ever we need that sense of belonging. I think things will come back stronger than before, and all this anticipation will pay off.

Everyone has had a lot of time to think about things, and I think that will be really beneficial for the sports world.

Whether its those in sports media, sports journalists, or just the athletes themselves, this is going to give them a lot more motivation.”
