Woman reports extortion over Snapchat pictures MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police April 14 to report that someone was using social media in an attempt to extort money from her. The victim, 20, said someone hacked her Snapchat account in February and sent her provocative photos of herself from the old account, which she was no longer able to log into. The suspect threatened to leak the photos to the university, where the woman was a student, unless she sent money to a Cash App account, according to police. The woman told officers she hadn’t sent any money, but she was worried the suspect would soon expose her private photos, noting someone continued to send her the pictures from random phone numbers. Police told the victim to continue trying to report the harassment to Snapchat.
Customer kicks up fuss at Five Guys restaurant
MILTON, Ga. — A Door Dash driver allegedly caused a scene April 17 at the Five Guys Famous Burgers restaurant on Windward Parkway. Police were dispatched to a duress alarm at the restaurant and spoke to the manager who said the suspect came into the restaurant and sat in a closed-off dining area. When the manager asked the suspect to move, the man slammed his fists on the counter and began yelling profanities. He asked the manager to step outside and fight him, then knocked cups and other items off the counter. The manager and restaurant employees told officers the suspect’s

Police cite dog owner for violating noise law
MILTON, Ga. — Police were dispatched to Avensong Village Circle for reports of an excessively barking dog April 16 and cited the dog’s owner. The complainant recorded the pooch barking uninterrupted for over nine minutes and told police it had been going on for an extended period. Officers recognized the dog from previous calls and noted that police had responded to the address nine times since the beginning of 2020. The dog’s owner told officers she fell asleep while tucking her child in and left the dog outside. Police cited the woman for a public noise ordinance violation.
Man steals gold chain from North Point store
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A shoplifter stole a gold chain from the Zales Jewelry shop at the North Point Mall along North Point Circle on April 14. A store clerk told police a man wearing a hat and black face mask came in and asked to look at some gold chains. He took one of them and walked out as the clerk yelled for him to stop. The employee described the chain as a 10-karat yellow gold necklace worth $1,500. Mall security showed footage of the suspect running out of the mall and leaving in a white SUV driven by another person.

The woman ran a red light and fled the scene when police spotted her driving in the rear parking lot of the shopping plaza near Old Roswell Place. She nearly caused a serious crash and struck a crosswalk sign before spinning out of control, according to police. The car proved to be stolen out of Gwinnett County, dispatch notes showed. Doctors treated the woman at North Fulton Hospital. Police sought several felony warrants against her, according to the report, but no charges had been filed as of press time.
Man taken into custody after erratic behavior
ROSWELL, Ga. — An Atlanta man allegedly pointed a toy gun at motorists and laid in the roadway in front of the Walmart along Mansell Road on April 17. Alpharetta police responded and got the suspect to drop the toy gun. Roswell officers took him into custody. He was described as belligerent and hostile in the police report. Police took the man to North Fulton Hospital to be medically evaluated and he was admitted. He continued to be belligerent and had to be restrained to his hospital bed, police said. Officers obtained arrest warrants for the man in connection with the incident. Those charges had yet to be filed as of press time.

Milton begins administering COVID vaccinations By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Dozens of residents received COVID-19 vaccinations last week as Milton rolled out a program to provide the injections twice a week. The vaccination events, held at Community Place adjacent to City Hall, are in partnership with Milton’s ReVue Pharmacy, which is providing the vaccinations that are being administered by Milton Fire personnel. “The first week of the Milton Fire-Rescue Department’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic has been a great success,” Milton Fire Chief Gabe Benmoussa said. “We’ve been able to serve – and change the lives – of dozens of people thus far, and we’ve laid a strong foundation to continue doing so for weeks to come. We have a steady flow of people utilizing the clinic, all moving in and out with minimal waits and high satisfaction.” Following the first week, the city has expanded the hours vaccines will be available. Vaccinations will be distributed at Community Place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Doses are available to anyone 18-years or older. Resident and Milton Community Emergency Response Team member Sundak Ganesan has created an online form that allows residents to fill out their paperwork ahead of time. The form can be accessed at ee.humanitarianresponse.info/x/ZTmBUsr3. There is no charge for the vaccinations and no appointments are necessary. Those receiving a vaccine will be required to bring an ID and will be scheduled for their second dose four weeks after their first.

Land use stands out as priority in comprehensive plan process By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Land use is leading the discussion as residents weigh in on Milton’s 2040 comprehensive plan, a document that will guide development strategies in the coming decades. Community Development Director Bob Buscemi said it is imperative that residents and stakeholders help formulate the plan. “What is happening with the comprehensive plan is so important and exciting,” Buscemi said. “The exact recommendations are still to be determined, though there has been a lot of talk about taking steps to incentivize large lots.” The city began courting developers to create residential lots of at least 3 acres beginning in 2018. Some enticements for meeting the 3-acre lot minimums include waiving curb and gutter requirements, allowing homes to be accessed by a shared driveway and loosened stormwater obligations. Buscemi has repeatedly told the City Council and Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, comprised of local
officials and residents, these incentives have been working to sway developers into creating larger lots. There is also demand among homebuyers for these sizeable lots, he added. The advisory committee discussed earlier this month the possibility of creating more zoning categories for larger lots, and with them, more incentives to developers. Though development is eminent, Buscemi said the plan can allow for “smart growth” while maintaining Milton’s unique character. “People love Milton for good reason,” he said. “At the same time, all the things that make this city great also make more people want to live here. So, it’s a critical balancing act to manage this growth, so that, even as things change, Milton doesn’t lose the many things special about it that drew people here in the first place. The 2040 Comprehensive Plan can help in that regard.” More mixed-use developments have also been discussed. The city already has some mixeduse areas, particularly in downtown Crabapple, but the advisory committee
has discussed at length the prospect of more “live, work, play” communities, particularly in the Deerfield Parkway area. “While there’s little apparent appetite for high-density development, the sentiment seems to be that certain mixed-use developments can be valuable and viable in certain parts of Milton,” Buscemi said. Another common theme that has stood out in the drafting process, Buscemi said, is the desire for more parks, both passive, likes trails and greenspace, and active areas that could include ballparks or other amenities. While the city often touts its rural and equestrian heritage, talks have included branding specific areas in the city and its offerings to residents and outsiders. “There seems to be interest in establishing Milton as a rural haven in Metro Atlanta with a strong equestrian community, one with easy access to great restaurants, shopping and more,” Buscemi said. “As the City grows, some have expressed a desire for adding more ways for people to enjoy nature as well as community gathering spaces.”
Buscemi said the next step in the process, the advisory committee’s May 6 meeting, is particularly important as it relates to land use. Officials will focus on land use and zoning recommendations during that meeting. Buscemi said is one of the best opportunities for the public to weigh in before a draft of the plan comes together. Residents can also comment at the CPAC’s final work session on May 13, and there will be an “open house” event, likely at City Hall, on May 20. Following those events, a drafted plan will be presented to the public. The city expects to finalize the plan in August. Buscemi stressed the importance of residents providing their feedback because the document will guide the city to what it will “ideally look and feel like 20 years from now” through policies, priorities and potential projects. “It’s not an end-all document, a lot of work still needs to be done [afterward],” Buscemi said. “Still, it serves as a critical guide to policymakers and City staff on what needs to be done to realize the vision laid out in the comprehensive plan.”

Uncle Jack’s on Canton Street offers new flavors to Roswell By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A new restaurant has taken its place on one of the marquee locations in North Fulton. Uncle Jack’s on Canton Street in Roswell offers a menu that can create four or five different experiences for guests, and the menu is structured to feed all of the people in the city, Uncle Jack’s CEO Willie Degel said. “From seafood to scratch made, fresh pastas to chop salads, sandwiches and burgers and different cuts of steak and triad steak, an array of really cool, fun appetizers, stuff like that,” Degel said. Uncle Jack’s originated in New York but has at least three locations in Georgia. Degel said the first several months in Roswell have been amazing, and the community has responded well to the new restaurant. He said the experience has been different as guests are adapting to new taste selections on the site of the former Big Ketch Saltwater Grill. “We’re trying to create an experience in different zones like the lawn,” Degal said. “We call it the great lawn. “We have beautiful picnic tables, fireplaces out there. We’re setting up a small, short, limited, fast, grab style menu for the lawn for people who are walking by.” Customers can order various menu items on the lawn and either sit down or take it to go. The restaurant also has different patios and is working on building an outdoor bar. The menu features old-school items since Degel’s research of the city showed that many older people with money live in the city and they were used to eating out often.

Local baseball squads look to postseason play By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Georgia High School Association baseball postseason gets underway this week with eight North Fulton teams vying for a state title. In Class 7A, Milton, Roswell and Alpharetta could not keep pace with their Cherokee County foes in Region 5-7A, but the rivals still duked it out for the No. 4 seed. The teams all entered the
final week of the regular season tied for the final playoff spot. Milton prevailed in the three-team fight, downing Roswell 6-1 on April 20 to get the tiebreaker the Eagles needed to clinch their fourth-straight postseason berth. The Eagles (7-21, 4-11) had their fair share of frustrations throughout the season and were outscored 196-73, but with the win over Roswell, their record now essentially stands at 0-0 as they enter the postseason.
Milton will travel to take on Region 8 champs Mill Creek (20-9, 10-1) in the first round. Roswell (8-21, 4-11) missed out on the playoffs for the second straight year. Alpharetta finished the season with a 7-21 overall record and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Cambridge was the only North Fulton squad to earn a playoff spot from Region 7-6A. The Bears compiled a 16-5

BT secured the 5-7A title over Cartersville, the No. 4-ranked team in 5A. BT will begin its run for a fourth state championship April 28 with a three-game series against the No. 4 seeded team from Region 6. The Titans have reached the state
semifinals every year season since 2013. Northview earned its first trip to the postseason since 2017 by placing fourth in the Region 5-5A standings. The Titans dropped their final 11 games of the season, but their 9-1 start to region play propelled the squad to the playoffs. Northview will take on Region 8 champion Greenbrier (22-5, 12-2) in the first round. North Fulton teams will be well represented in the Class-A Private playoffs, with Fellowship Christian, King’s Ridge, Mount Pisgah and St. Francis earning postseason berths from Region 6-A. Fellowship Christian enters the playoffs coming off the program’s first region championship. The Paladins went 8-2 in region play powered by hot bats and stalwart pitching. Fellowship averaged eight runs per game in the regular season with a team ERA of 2.86. This season marks the Paladins’ fourth playoff berth. King’s Ridge came up two games short of the Paladins with a 6-4 mark in region play and will host the No. 3 seed from Region 7 in the first round. The Tigers will be vying for the program’s third state championship. Mount Pisgah will go on the road in the first round after capturing the No. 3 seed. The Patriots tied with St. Francis but took the No. 3 seed by sweeping the Knights in the two-game, regular season series between the squads. Milton uses local data to begin road safety plan By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton officials are moving ahead with the next step in creating a “local road safety plan” aimed at reducing crashes, calming traffic and tailoring its roads to meet the specific needs in the city. “This issue effects every Milton citizen,” Councilwoman Laura Bentley said. “I can’t think of anyone I would talk to that would say we don’t have an issue with our road safety.” The process began last year with officials beginning to source traffic data and compile a survey for residents related to local traffic issues. Now, the city has opted to bring on a consultant to help take a deeper dive into traffic safety issues and how they can be addressed. At the Milton City Council’s April 19 work session, officials opted for a twotiered approach to creating its plan that will combine the firsthand knowledge of city leaders and the traffic expertise of an outside consultant. The city and its consultant will delve into cost-effective solutions for improving safety on Milton’s roads, including measures like installing more roundabouts, pavement markings, or signage, targeted traffic enforcement at highrisk areas and determining appropriate speed limits. Police Chief Rich Austin, who is spearheading the local road safety plan with Transportation Engineer and interim Public Works Director Sara Leaders, said hiring a consultant will streamline improvements, provide third-party validation for data and issues and provide an in-house and external team. The downside to the process is the cost for hiring and finding a qualified outside firm and delaying some improvements until that firm is hired. However, the City Council was on-board with city staff working with a consultant for the dual-layered approach. While a consultant will dive further into statistics and information related to local traffic, city officials have already kicked off the data-gathering process. Austin presented some initial information that gives insight into problem areas and traffic safety concerns of some residents at the April 19 work session. From 2015 to 2019, there were

about 700 car crashes, about 140 them involving possible injuries, in Milton each year. During that span, there were 10 fatalities, four crashes involving cyclists and 14 involving pedestrians. All road safety related incidents fell on average in 2020 with fewer cars on the road due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past five years, the intersection of Bethany Bend and Ga. 9 has been the city’s most crashprone area, according to information gathered by the city. There were 122 crashes at the intersection from 2016 to 2021, nearly double the number of crashes at the second most problematic intersection, Deerfield Parkway and Ga. 9. Other intersections that saw more than 40 crashes during that span include Deerfield Parkway at Webb Road, Cox Road at Arnold Mill Road and Cogburn Road at Bethany Bend. Austin also presented results of a city survey on road safety. Among nearly 400 responses, the top concerns were distracted driving, speeding and navigating cyclists. The top three areas of concern noted by respondents was safety along Birmingham Highway, Bethany Bend, Bethany Way and Bethany Road, and the Hopewell Road/ Cogburn Road areas. Over three-quarters of respondents supported adding bicycle lanes to select roads, and more than 90 percent were in favor of adding sidewalks or multiuse trails. Top safety measures suggested in the survey include adding more roundabouts, improving cycling/ pedestrian use away from car traffic, widening roads and adding turn lanes. “While the survey wasn’t statistically valid, it did provide valuable suggestions,” Leaders said.
MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council voted April 26 to set limitations on those who can solicit door-to-door in the city. The move requires that any “bona fide” non-profit or charitable organization must be registered with the Secretary of State’s Office to solicit door-to-door. The regulations also make an exception for tax-exempt religious organizations and educational entities. Police Chief Rich Austin told the council the city has a vetting process in place for solicitors in the city, but it does not cover non-profit organizations. He said outside groups have taken advantage and have been solicitating as charitable groups in Milton despite not operating in the area. Austin said the updated ordinance will “ensure entities” solicitating in Milton are reputable. The city’s regulations require that any company soliciting door-to-door must obtain a permit, which must be carried with the person(s) soliciting and shown to residents upon request, unless they are with a non-profit group. Austin said
educational, political or religious groups are the most common organizations that would be included under the non-profit umbrella. The permit includes the name, photograph and physical description of the solicitor, and the name or address of the solicitor or their company. For residents who do not want to be solicitated by companies, Milton’s ordinance dictates that no solicitation is permissible when a “no soliciting” sign is posted on their home. Solicitors are also required to “immediately and peacefully depart from the premises” when requested by a homeowner or renter. If a “no soliciting” sign is posted, no leaflets, pamphlet, paper, booklet or other printed materials can be left on a property. An issue raised by Councilman Rick Mohrig was the applicability of “no soliciting” signs posted to include entire neighborhoods. City Attorney Ken Jarrard said such a sign on a home’s front porch disqualifies that household from being solicited, but it’s “less clear” if a “no soliciting” sign posted on a subdivision sign or other area would include all homes within that neighborhood. The regulations also prohibit door-
to-door sales 30 minutes after sunrise or before 9 a.m. The move to require charitable organizations be registered with the state is the latest update to the city’s door-to-door solicitation ordinance. In January 2020, the city outlined additional definitions within the code, required that Milton police conduct a background check on those requesting a permit and set grounds for that permit being denied.
