Woman reports ID fraud robbed her of $10,000 MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police April 9 to report someone stole her driver’s license and Social Security number and fraudulently opened two bank accounts in her name.

Both unauthorized accounts were opened at a BB@T bank in September, police said. The victim didn’t discover them until February. One was a checking account and the other was a savings.

PUBLIC SAFETY Both had $5,000 balances when she learned of them.

The victim said someone also removed $10,000 from her actual CitiBank bank accounts.

Police probe burglary at home building site

MILTON, Ga. — Officers were dispatched to a residential burglary report April 10 at a Freemanville Road home under construction.

The complainant said several tools were stolen from the home and showed officers surveillance video from a camera on the grounds. The footage showed a Ford F150 with multiple occupants pull onto the property late the afternoon of April 9. The complainant said the suspects entered the home through an

Milton Fire to distribute COVID vaccinations MILTON, Ga. — Milton Fire and ReVue Pharmacy in Milton began administering COVID-19 vaccinations April 20.

ReVue Pharmacy is providing doses that will be administered by Milton Fire personnel to those 18-years or older.

Vaccinations will be administered from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Community Place, adjacent to City Hall, 2006 Heritage Walk.

There is no charge for the vaccinations and no appointments are necessary. Those receiving a vaccine will be required to bring an ID and will be scheduled for their second dose four weeks after their first dose.

Residents can also email covidsupport@cityofmiltonga.us to arrange a time for Milton Fire personnel to deliver a vaccine to homebound residents, or for more information.

Milton proposes upgrades at its newest park New field surfaces, tennis courts slated for Cox Road facility

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton hopes to make the most of its newest active park, the Cox Road Athletic Complex, with plans to upgrade its facilities and expand capacity for recreation programs.

Interim Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen presented the City Council April 12 with the plan, which has received backing from the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The council voted to continue fine-tuning the blueprint that will be presented to the board again before renovations move forward.

The proposal calls for replacing grass on the two, large rectangular fields with artificial turf and removing the half-field to pave the way for new tennis courts.

The turf fields could either be painted or striped to allow for football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball, and new fencing and netting would be installed.

If the project moves forward, it will address Milton’s deficit in multi-use fields.

“We’re currently over capacity on rectangular, turf fields,” McKlveen said. “Since 2015, we’ve had a significant increase to our (recreation program) registrations.”

The Cox Road facility houses half of the city’s multi-purpose fields. The other two are at Bell Memorial Park. However, McKlveen said local youth sports providers prefer artificial turf playing surfaces, and the Bell Memorial fields can no longer accommodate the growth of the programs.

He said about three to four teams are practicing on one field simultaneously at Bell Memorial.

The renovations proposed for the Cox Road complex would address the needs of those field capacity issues and provide other benefits.

About 20 to 25 percent of practice time is lost each season due to rainouts, McKlveen said, and one soggy afternoon could keep the grass fields closed for several days. Turf mitigates those cancellations and would provide a better playing surface and improved aesthetics over natural grass, he said.

McKlveen said he expects use would rise to about 90 percent with the upgrades, and the multi-use configuration would allow more flexibility for providers needing practice space and for the city to increase capacity. He said the baseball setup could provide space for about 150 more youth baseball players for each turfed field.

Artificial turf would also present taxpayers with approximately $50,000 to $65,000 savings a year in maintenance costs compared with grass upkeep.

The curveball presented in the plan is the turfed half-field on the site. McKlveen said the field was designed for under-10 youth soccer, but it’s not being used to its full potential because the city does not have its own youth soccer program.

The city threw around some ideas for using the space, including the addition batting cages, but ultimately chose to nix the field entirely and address another shortfall in its facilities — tennis courts.

Country Club property, and Director Terre O’Brien have to turn away players each spring and fall due to a lack of available courts. The city estimated about 80 to 100 more tennis players could be accommodated per season on the new courts.

“This would allow [O’Brien] to take those residents that are looking for a place to play,” McKlveen said.

With two more new tennis courts slated for the former Milton Country Club property, McKlveen said the city will have reached its goal of adding five additional courts that was set out in the city’s 2017 parks and recreation master plan.

The total buildout of the project, as proposed, would cost between $1.5 to $1.8 million. About $1.1 million of those dollars would come from the city’s impact fees, which are levied on new developments, ac-

The City Council was on board with the proposal, with councilwoman Laura Bentley sharing her approval for spreading out the city’s tennis facilities throughout Milton. Councilman Peyton Jamison said he has seen the crunch of youth teams on the Bell Memorial Park fields firsthand and thinks the city should invest in its own facilities because Fulton County Schools still limits the city’s access to its ballfields due to COVID-19.

Milton purchased the Cox Road facility last January. It includes the two full-sized fields, half field and bathroom/locker facilities. Since its purchase, the site is used by Rush Union Adult Soccer, the city’s youth lacrosse programs and is being rented out by Cambridge High School and Fulton Science Academy.

Friends share fond memories at old Milton High School site

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Friends and former students of the old Milton High School gathered Saturday for the unveiling of a marker noting the 100th anniversary of the school.

About 50 people — including graduates and former staff — assembled at the school’s original site on Milton Avenue in Alpharetta to honor its history and to acknowledge the district’s new Innovation Academy that now stands in its stead.

Even with new landscaping and a shiny, three-story building in the backdrop, the site conjured images of the old school to those on hand Saturday.

“The old building is gone now,” said Jackie Angel, who spent 15 years teaching social studies at the school on Milton Avenue. “But as someone said on our Facebook page, ‘Milton High School lives in our hearts, it doesn’t live in a building.’”

The old school closed in 2005.

Angel is now in her 16th year at the new Milton High School on Birmingham Highway in Milton.

She said four years ago when the school district announced it would tear down the old building, she and other volunteers with a love of all things MHS salvaged the cornerstones and other memorabilia for installation at the Milton campus.

The historic marker ceremony was sponsored by the City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society.

Bill Thomas, who served as teacher, administrator and principal for almost 30 years at the old school, said you wouldn’t recognize the area from what it’s become.

“Fifty years ago this August, I made my first trip to Milton High School,” Thomas said. “We drove forever on Ga. 400. There was nothing on Ga. 400 at that time.”

Sign franchise thrives during pandemic era

With BASH Atlanta, they’re hard to miss. A 6-foot customizable design for any occasion: birthdays, anniversaries — anything.

Stacey Magee, owner of BASH Atlanta, purchased the franchise in late summer last year. While still holding a full-time job, it became a major innovative outlet for her and her two children to participate in and get excited about.

Her only challenge is keeping up with the demand.

“The business has skyrocketed because of COVID and people are looking for ways to spread cheer and make each other happy and this is one way to do it,” Magee said.

When Magee took over the organization, a major part of her customer base was rooted in Buckhead, Brookhaven, Midtown and surrounding areas. But Magee’s main goal as the owner is to expand the growth of her shop in the Alpharetta area.

A study by the Mayo Clinic found that a diagnosis was changed or discovered in 21% of patients seeking a second opinion, and nearly 66% of all patients seeking a second opinion had their diagnosis refined. Receiving care for the wrong diagnosis or, more often, not receiving care for an undiagnosed issue can be life altering or sometimes even prove deadly.

Recently, a surprising number of patients have told me about experiences when their own initiative or a second opinion proved to be lifesaving.

One patient was told that an incidental finding of low platelets (thrombocytopenia) was dismissed by his first physician as likely of little consequence.

This patient sought a second opinion, and a bone marrow biopsy identified leukemia and led to treatment. Another patient’s doctor told her that a mass could be watched and that since imaging was not necessary, it would not

be covered by insurance. She paid out of her own pocket for a CT scan that identified the cancer that she suspected she had. Multiple other patients shared similar stories. And whereas this may come as a shock to some, it is, sadly, not surprising to me. Physicians are not infallible. I genuinely believe that patients should be their own advocate. Good physicians support their patients seeking additional professional opinions. In fact, my patients and I share similar stories because a second (fifth actually) opinion saved the life – or more accurately the quality and course of life – of my son: I count my blessings that my wife holds to her convictions and advocates for our family. Multiple “second” opinions at her insistence saved my oldest child from a lifetime of developmental struggles and unnecessary deafness.

Our oldest effectively stopped talking at about 14 months old. He never had a diagnosed or suspected ear infection.

Premier: Continued from Page 9 towards us when we called his name, my wife was convinced that he could not hear. She took him to multiple pediatricians and was repeatedly dismissed with the counsel that “boys will be boys” and “not everyone is a talker.”

These were board-certified, well-trained physicians. Over the course of a year, his speech deteriorated from a dozen words at 14 months to only 2 words at 2 years old. A pediatric ENT, an audiologist and another pediatrician examined him and suggested autism, but when asked, they could not support their conclusions convincingly.

The diagnosis just didn’t fit, as there were no other symptoms of autism.

Finally, at our second pediatric ENT and audiology appointment, the audiologist determined that the way sound waves bounced back from his ear drums was not consistent with open, air-filled middle ears. Dr. Matthew Whitley (Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat of Atlanta) scheduled an appointment to place tubes in his ear drums and explore further. Shortly into the surgery, Dr. Whitley discovered that my son had “glue ear,” which is when a glue-like semisolid form behind the ear drum.

Our son could hear sounds, which explains how he passed his first hearing test at one year old, but sounds were heard as if underwater, and he could not differentiate between many sounds which made speech unintelligible.

Dr. Whitley inserted tubes, removed the glue-like material from our son’s middle ear and restored his hearing.

Within one week our son went from speaking two words to twenty words.

We were informed that in a case such as our son’s, it would likely have taken years for the glue ear to resolve on its own. Had we stuck with our first, second, third, or fourth opinion, our son would have been severely affected by deafness (and thus speech) during critical developmental years.

As a Mohs surgeon, I have had many of my greatest successes in the field of skin cancer, oftentimes in the context of my serving as a second opinion. One patient was told by his previous Mohs surgeon that further surgery was not possible on his scalp, which was riddled with painful cancers. However, my patient and I selectively employed photodynamic therapy, 5-fluorouracil cream and Mohs surgery with skin grafts. His scalp is now healed and pain and cancer-free. Other patients have come to me with skin cancers dismissed by their previous dermatologists who assured them that a biopsy was not necessary. The most

common scenario has been that of growths that the patients were reassured were cysts but that ultimately proved to be squamous cell carcinomas. Biopsies have often identified the presence of skin cancers that, if left untreated, could metastasize to other organ systems.

Perhaps most frustrating to my patients, innumerable individuals have come to me upset that at their previous practice they were never told that Mohs surgery is an option. Frequently, patients first see me when cancers treated elsewhere begin to regrow.

Usually, these cancers were treated by a scrape and burn (ED&C), standard excision or freezing by another doctor.

Each of these methods is appropriate in certain circumstances, but what frustrated these patients is that they were not offered the choice of Mohs surgery.

Mohs surgery is a method of curing skin cancer by removing small pieces of tissue and checking the edges under the microscope until clear, cancer-free margins are obtained. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate (usually 99%) of any procedure for the most common skin cancers and is considered the gold standard treatment for skin cancer on the head and neck.

Physicians have an obligation to present patients with the most reasonable treatment options, even when

that treatment option is not available in their own practice. I sleep well at night knowing that I genuinely give my patients treatment that I would not necessarily pick for myself. My job is to present facts and to be a guide but not to choose for my patients.

Just today, I saw a patient who was referred to me for Mohs surgery of a basal cell carcinoma on the lower edge of the nose. We reviewed his treatment options together. He had never considered radiation therapy until I presented it as an alternative to Mohs surgery, and ultimately radiation therapy is what he selected. Likewise, I occasionally have patients referred to me for Mohs surgery who select imiquimod cream instead of surgery after I present it as a treatment option for certain types of basal cell carcinoma.

When non-surgical options exist, it is a surgeon’s responsibility to help educate a patient about treatment options worth considering.

Milton introduces service to keep residents updated Online information portal tracks city projects, finances

MILTON, Ga. — Residents wanting to keep up to date on Milton’s finances and projects in the works have a new resource with the city unveiling its ClearGov portal last week. City officials say the resource will increase Milton’s transparency in how it spends taxpayer dollars, and it will provide real-time updates for various projects, including traffic improvements.

The portal can be accessed at cityofmiltonga.us/transparency.

The ClearGov portal will include the city’s demographics, current debt, financial data, project lists and dashboards with additional information.

Residents will also be able to delve deep into the city’s financial status.

“Milton residents will be able to see the city’s financial data down to each individual line-item,” said Milton Finance Director Bernadette Harvill, who spearheaded the ClearGov portal project. “They’ll also be able to access information on what payments are being made to which vendors and what levels of debt we have.

In addition, the new portal will provide up-to-date information on major projects throughout the city as well as dashboards to track department metrics and strategic planning initiatives.”

The portal will also feature historical

data for comparison, project descriptions and documents related to specific projects.

Several council members said they would like to see a chart or other form of breakdown on how taxpayers dollars are allocated each year come tax season. Harvill said such a display could be generated through the portal.

Those wishing updates on city projects can also log on to view updates, timelines and background information.

Another feature allows users to receive notifications when the city updates a project, for instance, an intersection improvement.

“This is a very exciting feature that we hope will bring value to residents and other stakeholders with an interest in a specific project,” Harvill said. “If there is a timeline change for a new roundabout, for example, those subscribed to alerts will be notified that related edits have been made on the portal.”

The resource will include a map showing the city’s current projects and list the Milton project manager for each development.

The portal will allow for more a streamlined, in-house budgeting process as well.

The City Council approved the contract with ClearGov last year, spending $19,450 for access to the site through next November with a set-up fee of $1,800.

“Back in 2014, we originally decided to contract with this type of vendor in order to bring greater financial transparency to the city’s stakeholders,” Harvill said.

“Then and now, financial transparency is of high importance to the City of Milton.”

The ClearGov portal will allow residents to track the city’s finances and spending, along with updates to local projects in the works.

Readers ‘supposably’ like to make me cringe A few weeks ago, I asked readers to submit their (least) favorite mispronounced or misused words in response to Dictionary.com adding “supposably,” a mispronunciation of supposedly, JOE PARKER to its database. The Editor joe@appenmedia.com response was fantastic, and by that, I mean our readers might have been out to slightly torture me by forcing me to view all the wince-worthy words and phrases.

Looking at this snapshot of responses, it is abundantly clear that the most loathed, hated and cringe-inducing word of them all among those in North Fulton, Forsyth County and Dunwoody is “irregardless.”

Jan J. (real name: Jan Jay), put it succinctly: “Irregardless!!! Regardless of what people say, there is no such word!” she wrote.

Rich Lappin agreed.

“Irrespective and regardless of what other might say, irregardless is not a word,” Rich said. “Sadly, that has not prevented it from slipping into common usage.”

Joel Huey submitted one of my favorite misuses of an idiom — “I could care less.”

Saying “I could care less” implies that you do care, and totally goes against what people actually mean to say, “I couldn’t care less.”

As an example, I could care less about what deodorant I use. I’ve refused to wear anything other than Old Spice Pure Sport since puberty — that magical time in a man’s life when he hopes his particular smell, which is awful at the time no matter what deodorant he

uses, will attract a mate despite him looking like a sporadically haired, acneriddled genetic experiment gone wrong — but I don’t know why I’m so insistent on only using that brand.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t care less about any Royal baby, some mundane thing a Kardashian did or what deodorant brand you use, provided you’re at least wearing some kind if I’m standing close.

Another submission from Huey was the misnomer of “tin foil.” Foil, the kind you use to wrap leftovers in, throw in the back of the fridge and forget about until they have sprouted bacteria spores that appear to be from Mars, or the material used to make hats for QAnon believers, hasn’t been made of tin in over half a century. It’s aluminum.

On the subject of food, a misuse that is particularly aggravating in the Parker household, and my wife’s submission, is “Shepard’s pie.” Shepard equals sheep, not beef. A “Shepard’s pie” with ground beef is cottage pie.

Pie Rankin, who has to be ranked as having one of the coolest names I’ve ever heard, takes issue with “safety deposit box.” I agree. A safe deposit box is, as the term suggests, a box within a safe you deposit items into. A “safety deposit box” sounds like a specialized container for shipping stool samples.

Several readers also took issue with those who say “heighth” instead of height. Whenever I hear “heighth,” I go back to the time I was in college when several friends and I created a “Beer-lin Wall” with empty beer cans, and with our speech slurred by consuming the contents of our building materials, I’m sure we were impressed by its “heighth” and “bread, er, breadth.”

Dog’s death prompts testing for toxins in Chattahoochee

By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia ROSWELL, Ga. — The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is working with a team from the University of Georgia to expand water testing efforts to monitor cyanobacteria toxins, following the death of a dog after he swam in the river in January.

Susan Warner and her husband took their dog, Chewy, on a hike at Gold Branch trail along the Chattahoochee the weekend of Jan. 23. Halfway through the 2.5-mile hike, Chewy played around in some stagnant water, not fully submerged, for a couple of minutes and came out muddy.

As the couple and the dog made their way back to the car, Chewy began to show signs of fatigue and was panting and coughing.

“As we were going through there, he just started getting tired and so he kept sitting down and we’re like, wow, is he just really out of shape, what’s going on?” Warner said.

By the end of the hike, Chewy became more lethargic and stopped walking. Warner’s husband had to back the car up to the trail and carry the 90-pound dog into the car.

Chewy continued coughing and panting throughout the night and had trouble breathing in the morning. Warner took him to an emergency veterinary clinic where he died on Jan. 24.

“After that, it was just shocking to me because my dog did not have health issues so for him to go from like, 24 hours earlier he was bouncing around, like happy, normal, and now all of sudden he’s dead,” Warner said. “It was shocking and super scary.”

No certain cause of death The veterinarian found the possible cause of death was due to the cyanobacteria toxin, also known as bluegreen algae toxins.

Blood samples from the dog came back negative for the toxin. However, the bacteria is difficult to detect, and it breaks down quickly if the sample hasn’t been stored properly, said Susan Wilde, associate professor in aquatic science at UGA. The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper was notified of the possible presence of cyanobacteria after Chewy died a day after swimming in the Chattahoochee River.

The riverkeeper conducted the first round of testing on Jan. 27.

“We immediately sent those results to the University of Georgia for analysis

in which they did not find any harmful levels of toxin in that sample,” said Jason Ulseth, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.

Wilde said she and her team at UGA found blue green algae, which can grow on the sediment in the river, the mud on the bottom of the river. She also concluded that the levels of the toxin found were not high enough to kill a dog, but she also acknowledged that the sampling happened after the incident.

“I can’t say for sure that that was a cyanotoxin poisoning, but it certainly looks like it could have happened,” Wilde said. “We did find the cyanobacterial filaments that can produce anatoxin and we did find low levels of the toxin that they produce.”

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, UGA and the National Park Service performed additional testing in March in the area where Chewy swam and at two other locations. Those samples also did not register harmful levels of toxins, Ulseth said.

“So, we do not know what the cause of death was in Chewy, but out of an abundance of caution we are going to continue to do follow up sampling through the spring and summer just to make sure that we’re not seeing anything that can be considered harmful or dangerous,” Ulseth said.

Current testing incomplete Regular testing is conducted of the river, in particular for E. coli, but the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper typically does not test for cyanobacteria “because it’s never really been identified as an issue on the Chattahoochee, Ulseth said.

Wilde said she hasn’t seen levels high enough that would warrant posting a warning, but there is sufficient cyanobacteria to cause a problem with the right environmental conditions, and it is worth investigating because of the dog’s death.

Wilde noted some areas of concern on the river, including along Gold Branch Trail, where Chewy went into the water.

The UGA team also tested samples from Morgan Falls Park. The results were fine off the boat dock, but cyanobacteria was found in a nearby cove, an area that would usually be flooded.

Wilde said she didn’t think there would be much contact with the sediment for most people recreating in the area when more water is on top of the mud. The concern comes during low water periods, when the sediment and

Flood events can bring in a lot of nutrients, and when the water slows down, algae can begin to take advantage of those nutrients and reproduce, especially when the water level is low and things are concentrated, Wilde said.

“We have access to nutrients in this watershed and it comes in with some turbid, muddy inflows from some creeks that still need to have probably more nutrient management and we need to have better water processing systems,” Wilde said.

Sewage spills cited Wilde also said that Fulton County has experienced a number of sewage spills. In 2019, Fulton County’s sewage system was overwhelmed by heavy rains and more than 40 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into waterways from Camp Creek to the Chattahoochee River, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A spill was reported on Jan. 26, at a manhole on Concord Street in Alpharet-

NEWS ta, which was around the time Chewy swam in the river. A small waterway is within the vicinity of the spill location and it was about nine miles from the Chattahoochee River, said Regina Waller, public information manager for Fulton County.

The impact of the spill on the river is unknown though it was expected to be minimal, Waller said.

Fulton County is not required to test for blue green algae as part of its Environmental Protection Division permit requirements, Waller said.

“The size of the spill is considered minor by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division,” Waller added.

“Therefore, no testing is required by EPD of the waterway.”

Wilde said that the spill wouldn’t have had a direct impact on the incident, but it is an indication of a larger problem.

“If we’re getting that kind of contaminated water into our systems on a consistent basis, not every time but with more frequent heavy rainfalls, more frequently it’s happening,” Wilde said.

She said there is a prevalence of spills in the region, and they happen too often.

Wilde said she doesn’t want to inflame panic, but she thinks it’s a real enough concern, and she is glad the situation is being investigated.

The morning also included tours of the historic log cabin which the Historical Society had moved from the school property four years ago to a small public park about a quarter mile west. The cabin, built in 1935 by students enrolled in Future Farmers of America, has been restored with a new roof, kitchen, bathrooms, a storage room and an archive room.

Miller said that after a long wait, the cabin is set to host classes later this spring.

The $58 million Innovation Academy opens this fall and will eventually house some 1,600 high school-age students from North Fulton County in a science, technology, engineering and math curriculum.

Alpharetta launches program to cultivate community spirit

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — This month marks the opening of Alpharetta’s Grow-A-Row Program at Old Rucker Farm.

The volunteer-based effort is an expansion of the farm’s current produce donation program through a partnership with North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC). The farm serves as an educational tool for harvesting produce while also sharing space with the future Old Rucker Park which is still in the conceptual development phase.

Grow-A-Row was conceived in response to the increased need for supportive programs during the pandemic.

“The Alpharetta Grow-A-Row program was created to serve a need that has been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Alpharetta Community Services Manager Amanda Musilli said.

“Knowing how the pandemic has affected countless families in the area, two incredible volunteers, Mike Ruggiero and James Graeme, wanted the farm to be able to continue to donate produce to the [NFCC] Food Pantry year-round.”

Ruggiero and Graeme raised the money to create food producing rows and spent hours creating the space to make this possible. With the grounds in place, the program has garnered volunteer support from the community with groups contributing and harvesting the produce. The gardens help provide local families in need with fresh produce.

“I think it is fantastic,” said, Melody

Fortin, NFCC director of Food Pantry Services. “The fact that so many volunteers and groups came together to do this for others in the community is fantastic. It also takes the work and divides it among many, so there is less likelihood of it becoming too much work for a few. The best part of it is the ability to provide such healthy and great-tasting produce to our families that they cannot afford.”

The city held its first harvest April 16. Lettuce and radishes were ready.

Kale and collards are on tap for this week’s harvest. While conducting weekly weigh-ins and logs of the harvest produced, volunteers hope to harvest a total of 4,500 pounds of food for the charity within its first year.

The city has had more than 60 volunteers sign up to help, and that allowed for teams of volunteers to be assigned to each row. Each volunteer has donated a minimum of five hours each week.

“We are very happy to be working with the incredible people at NFCC, and they have expressed happiness with the program,” Musilli said. “We also believe that that access to fresh, healthy and nourishing food is a right, not a privilege…I am very fortunate to be able to spend my days working toward solving a piece of this challenge that many in our community face.”

Here’s where to find trout Like that heading?

I thought it might catch your eye!

I always enjoy hearing from folks who read this column each week. It’s great to know that people are getting outside and enjoying GeorSTEVE HUDSON gia’s great out-ofGet Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net doors!

Last week, for example, I enjoyed a nice exchange of emails about finding good barbecue up in Rabun County. This reader was planning a hiking trip to check out some waterfalls and was wondering about a good place to go for some barbecue for lunch or dinner. I offered a couple of suggestions, and in exchange I got a few tips on some places I have never tried. Ahh…exchanging intel via email on the lay of the barbecue landscape. Now that’s a good use of technology.

Another question I get a lot, in one form or another, has to do with good places to hike. What’s a good trail for hiking with kids? Where are trails that lead to really good scenic overlooks?

When is the best time to hike and see blooming wildflowers? I love questions like that, for they always get me thinking in a “hiking” sort of way and often help me decide where to go next time I’m out and about.

Folks often have questions about fishing, too. Getting me started on fishing is like getting me started on grandkids, and I love to talk with folks about both of those grand topics.

In fact, come to think of it, the question that I get most is a fishing-related question that usually goes something like this: “Where,” somebody will ask, “are the trout?”

What they’re asking, of course, is where has the state recently stocked trout into Georgia streams? And that’s a good question. If you’re going fishing on stocked water, it’s always nice to know that the particular stocked water in question has recently received some fresh trout!

The good news is that the answer to that one is easy to find. In fact, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) publishes a weekly stocking report that tells you exactly what streams have been stocked in the previous week.

It doesn’t pinpoint the exact stocking locations — finding those is up to you, and exploring with a fishing rod is actually a big part of the fun. But knowing which streams have been stocked can be a big confidence booster if, say, you’re taking the kids out and want to catch a few trout for supper.

“So how,” you ask, “do we find this most valuable information?”

I’m glad you asked.

To find the weekly stocking report, visit georgiawildlife.com, the Georgia DNR website. Click on the fishing tab in the bar near the top of the screen. Then click on “Trout Fishing.” That will take you to a whole lot of info on trout fishing in Georgia, some of which we’ve talked about before.

To locate the trout stocking report, look at the bottom of the bulleted list for the “Weekly Stocking Report.” Selecting that option brings up a page that identifies the streams (and lakes) which received some stocked trout the previous week. It’s broken down by stocking date, by county and by specific water.

Let’s say I’m considering a trip to Lumpkin County to fish in (for example) Boggs Creek. That is where I caught my very first trout many years ago, so it’s always the first one I look for. Just for old time’s sake, you know.

Anyway, the stocking report tells me exactly when Boggs Creek was last stocked. It also gives me stocking intel on a page and a half worth of other waters too. Wow. That’s enough to get any angler’s pulse rate up a couple of notches.

But (as they say) wait! There’s more!

Unfortunately, there is no warning on the site that this kind of info can have a negative impact on things like todo lists, particularly if there are chores to be done. The fact is that I’d rather be thinking about fishing than about, say, cutting the grass or weeding the front flower bed. You understand that, don’t you? Of course you do. I just hope my bride will be equally empathetic.

Besides, the weeds will still be there tomorrow.
