Police cite motorist for fleeing crash scene

MILTON, Ga. — A resident of Peacock Road called police April 4 to report three rings were stolen from her master bedroom. The victim claimed the rings were stolen during an estate sale she had in her home April 3. She was not home but hired an auction company to handle the event and keep guests out of three cordoned off areas of the home.

The victim said the auctioneer who was initially assigned to guard her second-floor master bedroom instead stationed himself at the entrance gate of her subdivision to let in arriving guests.

Police indicated the rings were in an open rings case inside the woman’s bedroom closet. Two of the rings were valued at $2,300. The value of the third ring was not immediately known.

MILTON, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a fender bender along Cogburn Road and cited a man for leaving the crash scene March 30.

Suresh Mani, 36, of Masters Way, Alpharetta, was ticketed for obedience to required traffic control device and duty to stop at accident.

No one was injured in the collision.

According to police, Mani was driving a Rav4 southbound on the road and made a left turn at the intersection of Bethany Bend. The report stated Mani turned in front of a southbound Land Rover and striking the side of the vehicle. Witnesses said Mani stopped very briefly and got out of his car, then took off westbound on Bethany Bend.

A witness snapped a photo of Mani’s license plate as he fled the scene. She also gave officers description of the driver. Police used the plate number to track Mani to his residence. He claimed he left because he got frightened after other motorists stopped to assist.

Motorcyclist injured in crash with SUV

Jewelry store employee falls victim to fraud call

MILTON, Ga. — Police investigated a serious two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle April 4 on Birmingham Highway. The late morning wreck happened near Triple Crown Drive and involved a Honda VFR-800 that collided with a Lexus SUV. According to police, the head-on collision took place as the Lexus truck was southbound on Birmingham Highway while the motorcycle was traveling north. The SUV attempted to turn left onto Triple Crown Drive and the driver of the motorcycle tried to brake and maneuver around it. But the bike slid into the SUV and the 63-year-old Marietta man riding it was thrown

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Scammers posing as executives for Piercing Pagado duped a manager of the jewelry store’s North Point Circle location out of nearly $2,500 in cash and gift cards March 27.

The victim reported the fraud on March 29 and told police someone called the Alpharetta store and identified himself as a company executive doing a financial audit. The caller told the store manager he needed to be issued a $1,335 gift card. He also instructed the manager to deposit $1,075 in cash to a Wells Fargo account to cover for misappropriated funds.

Thieves pilfer jewelry during estate sale

The manager said the caller sounded legitimate, according to police. The employee issued the gift card and made the cash deposit. Store security officials later realized both the phone call and bank account information were fraudulent. Police said by then, the gift card had already been used on the company’s website.

Man robbed at gunpoint outside Bank of America ROSWELL, Ga. — A man cashed his paycheck at the Bank of America along Alpharetta Highway and was confronted by a gunman in the parking lot March 30.

The victim said the suspect approached him as he got in his car and demanded his cash, saying “give me the money.”

The suspect pulled a handgun from his hip and held it toward the ground. The victim gave the gunman the $1,200 he’d just withdrawn from the bank, and the suspect fled in a late-model Ford Explorer. Police responded to the bank, and the victim gave officers a description of the alleged robber.

Woman reports assault after argument over debt ROSWELL, Ga. — Police responded to a Studio 6 motel along Old Dogwood Road on March 31 after a woman claimed she was attacked over an unpaid debt.

The victim claimed she was walking near the Economy Hotel next door when she encountered the suspect, a woman to whom she owed money.

They began arguing about the money the victim owed and the suspect allegedly punched her three times in the face, then pushed her into a dumpster.

The woman gave police a description of her attacker. Officers searched the two motels and the surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Milton condemns property to advance traffic project

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton has invoked eminent domain on several properties to advance a major intersection improvement project.

The City Council voted April 12 to begin the condemnation process on four parcels near the junction of Hopewell Road, Bethany Bend and Bethany Way that will allow the city to move forward on constructing a roundabout and new turning lanes.

Condemning property is uncommon in Milton — it has only invoked eminent domain about a dozen times since the city incorporated. However, the city says it needs to make the move to keep the project on track at an area that suffers daily congestion.

The city has come to terms with two homeowners on a purchase price for easements and right of way, but outside delays have forced Milton to condemn the property to maintain its timeline. In both instances, the homeowners’ lenders have not given their final approval. These two properties include about onequarter of an acre of right of way, plus temporary construction and driveway easements. The city listed the appraised value of the right of way on the two properties at about $225,000.

Milton has invoked eminent domain on two other parcels, owned by the same person, while negotiations continue. Right of way for the two parcels totals 0.065 acres, and the city lists the appraised value at $26,000. According to the city documents, the owner and city have not been able to come to an agreement on an “acceptable resolution.”

“Negotiations are continuing, but the construction bids have been received, and the timeline to secure the land needed is critical,” the document states.

These right of way acquisitions are the latest step in the city’s move to improve traffic flow at the intersection that is regularly congested during peak travel times.

Milton officials began studying ways to improve traffic in the area as far back as 2013, but they intensified the effort in 2017.

Among the several proposals considered, the city opted to construct a single roundabout at Bethany Bend with a left turn lane along Bethany Way onto Hopewell Road. A left turn lane on Hopewell at Bethany Way is also included in the project with a median.

Travelers exiting the Bethany Oaks subdivision can either turn right or left onto Hopewell Road. A median strip will be constructed in front of the neighborhood that will ease left turns onto Hopewell.

The project will be funded through the Transporta-

tion Special Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax Milton voters approved in 2016.

A push to continue the optional sales tax is currently underway with the 2016 levy set to expire next March. Officials from the 14 Fulton County cities outside of Atlanta are hashing out options to add a referendum to the November General Election ballot that would allow voters to decide on renewing the sales tax.

At a meeting of Fulton County officials earlier this month, Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts charged cities with developing a list of projects they would fund with TSPLOST dollars if the tax is renewed.

The Hopewell Road, Bethany Bend and Bethany Way project was listed as a top priority for Milton’s 2016 TSPLOST project list.

Alpharetta Retail Month to promote local merchants, charity ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau have teamed up to present Alpharetta Retail Month during the month of May 2021.

Painted Horse kicks off 2021 ‘Uncorked’ series

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — A sizeable, sold-out crowd gathered at Painted Horse Winery and Vineyards April 10 to enjoy Miltonmade wine, beers from Cherry Street Brewing, food from Cue Barbeque and listen the stylings of singer/songwriter Jeffrey Steele to kick off the winery’s 2021 “Uncorked” concert series.

The concerts, which are slated for the second Saturday each month, are in partnership with Nashville’s Bluebird Café and bring well-known singers and songwriters to Milton to perform acoustic sets and allow artists to delve further into their stories and share insight behind their tunes.

“It’s a cool thing for this area, to be able to do something like this in Milton,” Painted Horse owner Pamela Jackson said. “We’re not Buckhead or Atlanta, so to get to [an event] like this people usually have to travel quite a distance.

This is right in their neighborhood and a great opportunity.”

The Uncorked series previously made its Atlanta-area home at Painted Horse with Saturday’s concert serving as the kickoff event for the 2021 series, highlighted by a performance from Steele.

“Steele does quite a show,” Jackson said. “The event itself was fabulous, people loved it. It went smoothly, there were no issues and we had a great turnout.”

Office Evolution enters Roswell office space market

By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell residents Jackie Blyth-Gottlieb and Mark Gottlieb have found their niche after opening a business that changes the office landscape.

Office Evolution, a coworking space, has had consistent clients since the beginning of the year, and Mark feels optimistic about the future.

“There’s gonna be a shift towards this type of use from the old standard office situations going forward, not just because of the pandemic, but because of what’s transpired because of the pandemic,” Mark said.

Office Evolution is based out of Denver, Colo., and has 75 locations across the country. Three locations are in Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek.

“We’ve been around this area for a long time, in the Roswell area, so we have a lot of connections, so it’s been good being here locally,” Mark said.

Office Evolution operates 24/7, and members are given a fob to access the building. Members can also use any Office Evolution facility across the country.

The Gottliebs closed on their building in July and opened the business in November.

Mark said it was nerve-racking closing on a property in the middle of a pandemic.

“Even though it was obviously rough opening during the pandemic, I think [with] the market shifting towards our product, we’ve been fortunate,” he said.

“We’ve had a really good January, February, March and start of April.”

The couple is fortunate to open in Georgia in the sense that people are allowed to work in offices. Some states, like New York and California, have greater restrictions.

The space houses a variety of businesses, like a South African macadamia nut farmer, a chiropractor, a massage therapist and lawyers, Mark said.

The goal is to create an environment where the entrepreneurs can work together and refer to businesses in the coworking space.

Jackie said it’s been fun watching the business unfold. She said she enjoys seeing clients come together as a community, build business with each other and hang out together outside of the office.

Office Evolution has 36 offices, 24 of them occupied, as some open spaces and meeting rooms.

“We have TV hookups, obviously high speed internet, a whiteboard for working, brainstorming and then we have a big 1,000 foot room that can accommodate 25 plus people,” Mark said.

The large meeting room hasn’t been utilized a lot due to COVID-19 but once people are vaccinated and things open up more, Mark thinks that space will be used often.

Most people wear masks while in the building, unless they are in a closed office. Tables in the open areas are spaced 6 feet apart and have plastic shields.

“We recommend that they do [wear a mask], but some don’t, just like everywhere else you go in Georgia, they don’t always do that,” Jackie said. “If people are keeping their distance, then we’re not going to get too crazy about it and most of the time people keep their distance.”

Surfaces in the open spaces and offices are immediately sanitized after people leave. The Gottliebs also installed an ionic filtration system that kills viruses, bacteria and molds, and they use a sanitation spray that kills germs and

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County School System is intensifying efforts this summer to stem the loss of learning after months of disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic.

District officials anticipate about one-third of its 90,000 students will enroll in summer classes aimed at recovering, catching up or moving ahead in their classwork.

“We do summer school well in Fulton County Schools, and we are going to do it at a level that we’ve never done it before,” said Cliff Jones, chief academic officer for the district.

Summer school will be offered during two sessions in June and July at 35 schools across the district. Preparations are being made for more than 30,000 students to take at least one class during the two sessions, either in person or virtually.

“This is our [instructional] effort that has all hands on deck related to the impact of COVID in our learning environments,” Jones said during a meeting last month of the Fulton County Board of Education.

Summer school courses will be offered for students in all grades, kindergarten through 12th grade, and including those receiving special education services.

Jones said the summer sessions will launch the Fulton FOCUS program which is a 5-step plan to put students back on track academically.

The five parts include flexible time for student learning, opportunities for enhanced assessment, curriculum acceleration, universal support and small group instruction.

The program was initiated after student test scores showed learning essentially stalled for many when schools were closed in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic.

August, some students were more than two months behind where they should have been academically. Analysis of this past year’s loss is not complete, but officials said it will likely continue because many students still have not fully returned to in-person instruction.

While summer school is open to all students, Jones said some will be invited specifically to catch up and get back on track.

“We’ve identified certain students that we really want to make sure have the invitation,” Jones said. “And that awareness is for both the parents and student.”

The success of the summer sessions hinges on getting enough teachers to participate. Jones said he understands teachers have carried a heavy load this year.

“More teachers are coming around and we understand that fatigue – for our teachers, the students and for our community is real,” Jones said. “And we are working to address that.”

Elementary - Opportunity for elementary students to receive targeted support in reading and/or mathematics in a face-to-face setting.

Middle School – Opportunity to clear incompletes, accelerate, or recover credits through face-to-face or virtual. Students who choose to accelerate will pay tuition. Courses must be validated by their counselor before enrollment.

High School – Opportunity to clear incompletes or recover credits. Students who choose to accelerate can enroll in Fulton Virtual School and pay the tuition.

Courses must be validated by their counselor before enrollment.

Special Education - Face-to-Face Summer School courses will be offered for students who require an adapted curriculum to clear incompletes or failing grades. The content will focus on the core content areas: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Jones estimates nearly 650 fulltime teachers will be needed, along with many other summer school support staff.

The school district is using CARES Act stimulus funds to increase summer school offerings beyond the traditional. Students who have incompletes or failed a course can take the course through summer school at no cost. Students who are using summer sessions to accelerate or move forward must pay tuition.

Roswell City Council expands restaurant district

By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell City Council voted April 12 to expand the city’s Canton Street Restaurant District east another block along Oak Street.

The move adds more dining and nightlife amenities to one of North Fulton County’s most popular venues.

The Canton Street Restaurant District currently includes Oak Street east to Bush Street. The council’s action expands the district farther east to Forrest Street.

Within the restaurant district, businesses with an alcohol license are allowed to sell alcohol for carry out, allowing customers to take alcohol off of the premises of the restaurant.

This is not the same as an open container law, City Attorney David Davidson said. It does not allow customers to drink the alcohol while in public.

“It’s not a free for all,” Davidson said. “It’s basically if you have an alcohol license, you can serve somebody a drink and they can carry it outside of your establishment within this area.”

The council action drew some cautionary words from Roswell resident and businesswoman Janet Russell, who raised concerns at the prospect of people carrying out alcohol from a restaurant and drinking it while walk-

ing along Ga. 9 and to City Hall on Hill Street, which is now included in the district.

Davidson reiterated that the resolution only applies to restaurants that serve alcohol, and there are other laws in place, like public intoxication laws, that deal with drinking alcohol in public spaces.

“But all it is, it’s for the business.

It’s not for the person walking with the drink,” Davidson said.

Russell was also concerned about people who have had too much to drink walking across Ga. 9 without waiting for a signal.

“I’m just real concerned about this constant expansion,” Russell said. “I understand it’s only for the restaurant and what you’re doing is relieving them of liability. But it’s not relieving anybody else of liability.”

City Councilman Mike Palermo later clarified that the district does not go up to Hugo’s Oyster Bar or north of that, as this restaurant was mentioned throughout public comment. He said the district basically ends at the Georgia’s Own Credit Union.

Councilman Matt Judy said, at the March 24 Community Development and Transportation Committee Regular Meeting, that he was contacted by a few of the businesses in the Oak Street area to extend the district.

Diner and drives in the brilliant Mazda CX-5

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia. com Opened in 1995, the Marietta Diner in Marietta, Georgia, has become a quasi-landmark and part of the local lore JOE PARKER of the North Metro Editor Atlanta area. joe@appenmedia.com Aside from its massive location and 24/7 service — owner Gus Tselios has joked the front door doesn’t even have a lock — the restaurant has a menu so extensive and diverse to call it overwhelming might be an understatement.

Want a huge American omelet with a side of teriyaki glazed vegetables? No problem. Craving a burger with a side of pancakes? They’ve got you. Can’t decide between baby back ribs, baked Greek pastitsio, fried catfish, stuffed grape leaves or seafood primavera? You don’t have to. How about a steak, paella, lasagna, fried chicken, jambalaya, Belgian waffles, a turkey melt, grilled chicken, eggs benedict or fajitas? It’s

all there.

I’m convinced you could eat three meals a day at the Marietta Diner every day for several months and not have the same thing twice. I haven’t actually done the math on that because, well, I’m lazy, but I think it’s a pretty safe assumption.

You need to have some sort of idea of what you want to eat before walking through the diner’s doors, otherwise the staggering menu will simply turn your brain to Jell-O (and yes, they offer Jello-O, too). Just like you need some semblance of what you desire out of a compact crossover/SUV if you’re in the market. There is a plethora of options, and many of them are good.

So, like the good friend who gives your recommendations on what to eat when the restaurant’s menu rivals Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” for page count, let me help you slim down your choices in the compact SUV/crossover market.

“I’d get the CX-5,” I would say. “And maybe an order of pancakes.”

Among all the options available in the non-luxury, the Mazda simply stands a cut above the rest. It provides driving pleasure where most compact

SUVs deliver mundane experiences behind the wheel. It is beautifully sculpted in a market dominated by high-riding boxes with meaningless character lines and unnecessary angles. Its cabin is serene and refined where its rivals mostly have utilitarian interiors that, even in their Sunday best, fall short of the richness offered by the Mazda.

In a compact shopper’s quest to throw down on some new wheels, the Mazda’s appeal begins even before the engine is brought to life or butts hit seats. It looks fantastic.

Where the Toyota RAV4’s appearance can be described as “rugged,” the Honda CR-V as “bland,” the Hyunda Tucson as “conservative” and the Kia Sportage as “a bit weird,” the CX-5 can be tagged “gorgeous” with flowing lines and an overall harmony that can’t be found anywhere else in the segment.

That opulence extends to the cabin.

I spoke about how the Mazda is the leader of the non-luxury compact market, but in higher trims, its cabin rivals that of luxury automakers. High-touch

CX-5: Continued from Page 14 surfaces are made with softer materials, knobs and buttons have a quality feel and the styling is both graceful and ritzy.

Where the CX-5 truly stands above the rest is when you put those styling looks in motion — the Mazda doesn’t sacrifice driving pleasure in delivering a small-SUV experience.

It is enjoyable to drive, fun even.

Steering is responsive and appropriately weighted, its brakes are effective with a smooth pedal motion and smart and snappy gear changes are served up by the 6-speed automatic.

A peppy 187-hp four-cylinder is standard, but for the ultimate driving experience (outside a BMW, if brand taglines are to be believed) buyers should consider the 250-hp turbocharged engine available in the top two trims or as an optional extra in mid-range Carbon models.

The turbo engine provides plenty of grunt with a peak torque figure of 320 lb.-ft. While the turbo can get a bit winded higher in the rev range, power is ample for everyday driving and for a bit of spirited fun.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but

power can be sent to all four wheels across the CX-5 range for $1,400.

On the daily commute, the CX-5’s supple but non-floaty suspension irons out bumps in the road with ease, and it glides through corners in comfort.

Overall, the Mazda provides a driving experience that is typically only offered in models that cost tens of thousands more.

And limited dollars go a long way.

Base models are well equipped with safety features and technology, which now includes a 10.25-inch digital display with a Wi-Fi hotspot with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Still, perhaps the best bang-for-buck can be found in the Carbon Edition which includes unique exterior accents and 19-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, power liftgate, leather-trimmed seats, steering wheel and gear selector, a Bose stereo system and an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with position memory.

My top-of-the-range Signature model added a host of features like genuine wood trim, a 360-degree view monitor, heated and ventilated front/ rear seats with Nappa leather trim and navigation while remaining under the $40,000 mark.

The CX-5 is not without its downsides. The rear seats are a bit tighter and provide less leg and head room than some competitors, and the cargo

area, while still relatively spacious, is smaller than some CX-5 rivals.

But these are small complaints with viewing the Mazda’s overall package.

For its price, amenities, driving dynamics and upmarket feel, the CX-5 is a clear standout in a crowded market.

So, if you’re in that market, don’t be overwhelmed by the bevy of options.

My suggestion is to start by looking at the Mazda. If you’re going to the Marietta Diner, I do not have a suggestion, because I’m still overwhelmed by its menu.

Nature, memories and the promise of a better day Long ago, a man planted daffodils in the medians in the parking lot behind our church — hundreds and hundreds of daffodils. They always surprise me.

Every year I wonder how many of RAY APPEN us are left who see Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmedia.com these flowers and remember how they got there, who planted them, or even the fact that that they haven’t always been there — that they are gifts, deliberate acts of grace planted by a slender wisp of a man with thinning white hair and clear blue eyes, who used to sit in the pews in which they sit now.

Memory is personal and not always shared, no matter how much one might wish otherwise. Memory never ages, and yet, a hundred years from now, who will thank John for his daffodils?

He always had a smile to share and a kind word that would brighten any day.

That, I remember with vivid clarity.

Most of the time, however, I don’t think about John, except when all those bulbs begin to emerge from long slumber and break ground, sending their long slender green shoots up into the air and the light after a year of damp darkness, buried in the soil.

They break the surface inching forward a day at a time — an hour at a time — unnoticed at first by all. Then, after days and weeks of effort they stretch out until, miraculously they begin to bloom and announce to the world, in chaste yellow as bright as the sun, that they have returned in all their simple glory; they have risen yet again without condition, or assistance, or human involvement — another morning, another spring, another year — for us — for all of us.

In the parking lot, Vivaldi floats through the air as if cast out by sirens

hidden among the trees that surround our parking space, or behind the cross high upon the gables of the church. The musicians however, all sit adjacent a defiant outdoor pulpit constructed of pine and steel nails by parishioners, what feels like years ago, but actually was only a few months ago — at the beginning of the pandemic which locked the doors of the church and pushed the congregation outside where it is safe.

There sits one with a bassoon, and next to her a violinist, and then one with an oboe, and a keyboardist, and, with hands held high and swaying as if with the siren’s call, Drew, our lover of all music, conducts, his smile, and the glimmer in his eyes unseen by the parishioners all parked in our cars or siting on our folding chairs on the pavement or in the medians in the grass.

The morning has a chill, enough for a light blanket. Yet, the sun is bright and warm, and there is a slow breeze that must form layers high above the parking lot, above the siren’s Vivaldi, far above the church roof, upon which three raptors float but only for a few moments during the beginning of his sermon, wings spread that catch the warm updrafts as Ollie reads about the messenger beside the rolled door of the open tomb — the “young man dressed in white” — “clothing as white as snow.”

And people gather in the warm sun and listen — some with eyes closed, others in still warmth and rapt attention.

A subtle joy that seems to have been launched on the wings of music, and the breeze, and the bright sun with it’s warm embrace, distills the morning and promises better times ahead, that we are loved, and we are never far from his arms.

I look around at the people and then the yellow daffodils at my feet, and I smile. A simple flower returns — like a rainbow. A promise is kept — with a pure simplicity — an act of grace and rebirth.

Thank you, John. We remember.

Just enough information might be all you need Being the outdoorsy type, I’m always on the lookout for someplace new to explore. It’s surprising how often such places turn up too, if you don’t mind investing the work it takes to find them.

STEVE HUDSON Just the other Get Outside Georgia, day, for example, I aa4bw@comcast.net found myself on a fishing foray among the hills and ridges of northwestern Georgia. I was tracking down a rumored stream said to offer remote solitude and plenty of fish. That rare combination is like the finest of wines, something to be savored and shared only after great deliberation.

So I wasn’t surprised when my fishing buddy hinted at the presence of such a stream but stopped short of the all-important details. Instead, he gave me what I like to call “just enough information.” He didn’t tell me to go to this intersection and turn that way and then follow such-and-such a trail.

Instead, he’d used a broad brush to point me in the general direction.

“You have to do the rest,” he said.

“But you might find it’s worth it.”

So off I went. Eventually I found the stream. I rigged up the little fly rod. I tied on the recommended fly. I made some casts, and the fish responded well. Yes, it turned out to be a good little creek, and I enjoyed a most exceptionally pleasant afternoon.

After a while it was time to head home. So, there I was, a solitary driver on a quiet backcountry road, my thoughts kind of wandering like they do sometimes on long drives. Do you do that too?

After a while, my thoughts alighted on a book I got for Christmas last year.

It’s called “Roadside Geology of Georgia,” and it brings the rockscape to life in a way that’s scientific enough to be interesting but not so much so that folks like me can’t keep up. That’s my kind of book.

I recalled one part of the book that I’d lingered over just the day before. It was talking about fossils.

Now don’t misunderstand. This is not a “go look here” kind of book.

Instead, it paints a broad picture that gets you thinking.

Like my fishing buddy, it’s a source of “just enough information.”

I had a half hour of daylight left when it dawned on me that I was driving right through one of the regions where the book had hinted that fossils might be found.

And then, just ahead, there was a roadcut.

Why not?

I pulled the truck off the pavement, parking in knee-high brambles well off the road. Staying on the public rightof-way, I made my way to a nearby patch of exposed dirt to check it out, looking for – what?

Nothing, apparently. There was nothing there but red mud.

Still, my “just enough information” said I might be on the right track.

Back in the truck then, and a mile or so farther down the road, and there’s another road cut.

Another stop. More mud. But that’s it.

The light was fading fast. But I had a purpose, and there was yet another roadcut a little ways ahead. So back in the truck and pretty soon there I was, once again perusing the northwest Georgia mud.

What was I looking for? Maybe for

that – right there! See that little round thing about a quarter inch long? Well, of course you can’t see it, because you’re sitting in your house reading.

But I was there, on the ground, and there was something really interesting in the dirt at my feet.

I picked it up. And then another one like it, but smaller. And then a bigger one, and then a few more.

They were fossils, sure enough.

Fossils that I recognized as being of a creature called a crinoid. How old?

A couple of hundred million years or more. I’d have to go back to the book and figure that out.

I found two more, and then it was dark.

I cached my finds, now lovingly wrapped in a scrap of paper towel, in the safety of my shirt pocket. Then I drove on home.

On the way, I thought more about how much fun “just enough information” can be. It offers only promise, and it leaves the rest to you.

So…next weekend…I’ve got a line on this area up north of here a ways…

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

and I think this is a way that does it,” Palermo said. “When I’d actually brought this forward a few years ago to go over Highway 9, there was some hesitation, opposition to moving it to the other side of Highway 9, but I’m really glad this council ultimately unanimously supported it.”

The district had included part of Oak Street but not the whole street nor all of the businesses located on the road.

“I think like half of the block didn’t get included for some reason, so this would take it all the way down to Forrest ,and that would include all of the businesses that are located [there] without any doubt,” Assistant City Attorney Bob Hulsey said at the March 24 meeting. “So I think it’s just to clarify things and to add that last piece.”
