Woman falsely claims she crashed through fence MILTON, Ga. — Police were dispatched to an auto crash at a Chick-fil-A on Windward Parkway March 24.

Latasha Winston Hall, 39, of Stourbridge Common Circle, told police she accidentally hit the accelerator pedal when she was trying to brake and her car jumped the curb, rammed through a wooden fence and struck a water pipe in the restaurant’s parking lot. The Milton woman claimed she was trying to maneuver around the drive-thru to find the curb-

PUBLIC SAFETY side service lane when she inadvertently pressed the gas pedal.

But drive-thru employees who witnessed the crash told officers there was a juvenile in the driver’s seat when the collision happened. They said the juvenile fled the crash scene before police arrived.

One of the employees provided investigators with video of the incident. It showed the juvenile get out of the driver’s seat and Winston Hall jump behind the wheel immediately after the crash. The woman refused to identify the young driver. Police cited her for making a false representation to officers.

Lost wallet costs owner as thief raids account MILTON, Ga. — Police investigated a Milton woman’s March 24 report that someone stole her wallet from her car as she was playing tennis along Manor Club Drive

in east Cobb County on March 22.

The victim said her credit card, debit card and driver’s license were in the stolen wallet. Police indicated a woman used the victim’s debit card and license to withdraw $16,000 from one of the victim’s bank accounts. The suspect tried to remove $12,000 from a second account by posing as the victim. Employees at the second bank turned the suspect away when she failed to answer security questions.

The victim told officers she also got alerts from her credit card company notifying her that someone attempted to make multiple purchase of $1,000 apiece at Kroger and Office Max stores in Cobb County.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman walking near cars at the tennis court and a suspicious white Volvo SUV parked at the scene, according to Milton police. Cobb County police advised the victim to report the identity theft to her local police agency.

Milton Fire honors annual award winners

The department awarded its Firefighter of the Year, Company Officer of the Year, Meritorious Fire Chief awards and Life Saving Award winners during the ceremony.

Also at the ceremony, the newest Milton firefighter Chris Lohmuller took the Firefighter Oath of Office.

Milton citizens group turns focus on biking routes, agriculture lands

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee turned its attention to biking, walking, sustainability and retaining larger residential lots in its latest meeting. The March 25 meeting was the latest in the committee’s efforts to set priorities and goals for Milton’s 2040 comprehensive plan, which will serve as a guide for the city’s development over the next two decades.

The committee is comprised of over a dozen Milton officials and residents.

Land use continued to be a hot topic among the board. The meeting centering on how Milton can retain larger residential lots and farms and curb the subdivide tide.

The straightforward answer, at least for now, is to continue incentivizing larger lots.

Since 2018, the city has been dangling the carrot of incentives in front of developers who agree to construct homes on lots of at least 3 acres. Some enticements for meeting the 3-acre lot minimums include waiving curb and gutter requirements, allowing homes to be accessed by a shared driveway and loosened stormwater obligations.

Earlier this year, the city removed the limit on the number of lots eligible to be accessed by a “modified single-family driveway.” The previous cap of five lots was eliminated to allow for an unlimited number of homes, provided the lots are at least 3 acres in size.

Community Development Director Bob Buscemi said the incentives have been swaying developers into creating larger residential lots, and there is a demand for them among home buyers.

To continue these efforts, the committee discussed further incentives for large residential lots and potentially

creating new zoning designations for lots of at least 5-acres.

Committee Chairman Todd Chernik said that without specific zoning categories for larger residential lots, developers will be driven to meet just 1-acre minimums required by AG-1 zoning, the designation for most of Milton’s residential areas.

However, the city could sweeten the pot by creating an AG-5, AG-10 or AG20 zoning category that would include increased lot size requirements but further incentives to developers and, potentially, homeowners.

Buscemi said enticements could include additional allowable uses on properties. Homeowners could also be permitted to construct “accessory structures” for farm uses and allow them in more areas of these properties.

City Councilwoman Laura Bentley suggested that homeowners within the large lot zoning categories could also be exempt from paying Greenspace Bond taxes.

Any further financial incentives would need approval from Fulton County.

Buscemi said maintaining larger lots is crucial to fostering Milton’s rural character, and such developments are the driving force behind the city’s desirability and its ever-increasing land prices and home values.

In an online survey conducted by the city, respondents said only allowing low-density housing and incentivizing large lot owners away from subdividing their property were the top priorities for preserving the city’s “rural and equestrian heritage.”

As Milton’s popularity as a place to call home has grown, so has its appeal to the cycling community. The Advisory

Forsyth County Schools challenges stimulus funding formula

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Officials with Forsyth County Schools are questioning a formula for federal stimulus funds they say is lopsided and unfairly penalizes the district based on the makeup of its student population.

Georgia’s public schools have received nearly $6 billion in federal stimulus funds in the past year aimed at helping K-12 schools respond and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The school-based funding has been included in three separate stimulus bills approved

by Congress over the past year.

The first two rounds under thenPresident Donald Trump were referred to as the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act; the second under President Joe Biden were included in the recently-approved American Rescue Plan.

Lawmakers mandated the education funds be allocated to school systems based on the percentage of students receiving Title 1 services tied to lower family income. Fewer than 14 percent of Forsyth County’s 51,500 students fall into that category, according to the Georgia Department of Education. The statewide average is nearly 57 percent.

The formula puts Forsyth County Schools, with its low Title 1 population, at a distinct disadvantage for COVID relief funds. Officials have maintained the district is facing the same challenges as all districts in providing education under pandemic disruptions.

In total, Forsyth County Schools

received $20.5 million in federal funds, equal to $397 per student. By contrast, Atlanta Public Schools with 1,000 fewer students, received the equivalent of $6,234 per student.

In an email sent in January to the Georgia Department of Education prior to the second round of stimulus funding, a Forsyth County Schools official questioned the continued reliance on the Title 1 formula for future allocations.

“If Title 1 is used again…Forsyth will be shorted again, and some school districts could receive more in CARES Acts fund than the austerity cuts,” wrote Larry Hammel, chief financial officer for the Forsyth County School System.

The email was obtained under the Open Records Act. Most Georgia school systems began the school year in the red after $950 million in state education was cut through “austerity reductions.” A mid-year budget adjustment restored 60 percent of the cuts, but many school systems, including Forsyth County Schools, still struggled.

“Forsyth had a $23 million deficit in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget, and receiving $1.7 million in the first round of CARES Act funds did not help,” Hammel wrote.

The formula remained unchanged through all three rounds of stimulus funding for Georgia, which grew from $411 million in the first round to $3.8 billion in the latest round approved last month.

A spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education said the decision on allocations is out of the hands of education officials, at both the state and

national level.

“The funding method was determined in law, not by the U.S. Department of Education,” said Matt Cardoza, external affairs director for the department.

Of the 193 school districts in Georgia, 10 systems received almost half of the nearly $6 billion in federal stimulus funds allocated to the state. Forsyth County Schools ranked 60th among the 193 districts in terms of total funds received, despite its size as the 6th largest in the state with 51,548 students.

DeKalb County Schools, the state’s 3rd largest school district, received the most federal stimulus among the state’s school districts. It has received $486

million to date — $5,264 per student.

The district recently returned to face-toface instruction after seven months of universal remote learning.

Forsyth County Schools was the largest school district in the state to open last August with in-person instruction.

Cardoza said the federal stimulus funds do not come with any incentives or mandates to open schools to face-toface learning.

“We have allowed local districts to determine [their instruction model], but State Superintendent Richard Woods has stated clearly he believes face-toface is the best model for the majority of students,” Cardoza said.

Lawmakers adjourn session with education impacts Vouchers, sports eligibility await governor’s signature

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA, Ga. — The Georgia Assembly ended the first half of its two-year session on March 31 with more of a whimper than a wail as most of the headline-grabbing bills passed in the days before adjournment.

Most of the highly debated legislation, including voting reform and expansion of special needs vouchers for public school students, was on Gov. Brian Kemp’s desk before the final day of the 40-day session.

The final day was busy as lawmakers passed legislation dealing with homeschooled students’ eligibility to play on public school teams, the rights of “pandemic pods” for small groups of students, and adding vaping product information to the drug and alcohol courses.

Approved measures are now before Gov. Kemp who has 40 days to sign or veto the legislation. The governor can also do nothing and allow the bill to go into law.

Education advocates across the state came up short on their annual push to defeat expanding the program that provides private school vouchers for students with special education needs.

Since its original passage in 2007, lawmakers have sought to expand the Special Needs Scholarship program to include an expanded list of what defines a “special need.”

Of the three voucher bills introduced this session, Senate Bill 47 sponsored by Rep. Steve Gooch (RDahlonega), made it across the finish line and awaits the governor’s signature. The bill allows students with 504 plans access to vouchers, and not just Individualized Education Plans as defined under federal law.

Education advocates lobbied that 504 plans are often temporary and can be mitigated by changing the learning environment for the student.

Another piece of education legislation, the “Tim Tebow bill,” made it to the governor’s desk after years of consideration. Now renamed the “Dexter Mosely Act,” the bill allows homeschooled students to participate on public school extracurricular teams. The student must be enrolled in at least one class at their home school.

The bill did not pass on its own. It was added as an amendment to Senate Bill 42, dealing with student discipline data, after failing as a standalone bill.

The General Assembly also passed House Bill 81 which is the state’s Fiscal Year 2022 budget. It is the only piece of legislation that must be introduced and passed each session. The budget contains an austerity cut of approximately $380 million to the Quality Basic Education formula, the state’s primary mechanism for funding K-12 public schools.

Marietta was awarded for his service as the city’s Emergency Manager and leading the Milton’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Life Saver Award: Several members of Milton Fire, Alpharetta Fire and a Milton Police officer were given the Life Saver Award for their actions during a January, 2020 cardiac arrest incident.

During the incident Ofc. Laura Hamby arrived first on the scene and initiated CPR. Milton Fire’s Truck 41 then arrived on the scene and initiated cardiac life support treatment with assistance from Alpharetta’s Engine 81 crew members.

Due the quick response, medical skills and teamwork, the patient was resuscitated, transported to a hospital and was later discharge alive without any deficiencies.

Honorary Firefighter Award: Bob Buscemi Milton Community Development Director and City Architect Bob Buscemi was given the Honorary Firefighter Award for his service, dedication and support of Milton Fire.

Buscemi led the design for the city’s Public Safety Complex that opened last year, which includes safety initiatives and equipment for the protection of firefighters and staff.

“Bob’s experience, knowledge and skills in designing and building sustainable, community-oriented fire stations that feature health, safety, and cancer prevention initiatives is a great support to the Milton Fire-Rescue Department,” Fortner said.

Dance school fills need in Roswell

By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — At age 3, Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz knew she wanted to take ballet.

So, her mother, not knowing what ballet was, searched for classes for her toddler. For a couple of years, Yilmaz danced in the basement of her teacher’s house near Lenox Square.

As time passed, Roswell created its own recreation department, and Yilmaz was in one of the first dance classes offered.

“All of the kids in Roswell signed up for everything that was suddenly offered,” Yilmaz said. “I mean this was all new to us. We’d never seen any of this.

So, I started with what was the very first recreation department.”

At age 21, the sixth-generation North Fulton resident opened Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance in 1979 with fellow dancer Mary Lynn Taylor. The pair aimed to fill a need in the community to offer classes to children in the city when there weren’t many options at the time.

“I really, sincerely thought this would be just something maybe once a week, go in, teach classes, continue with my professional career and, yeah, it changed,” Yilmaz said. “It changed overnight.”

The studio started out in a small, fixer-upper house on Canton Street. On the first day of class registration, they expected a few dozen kids. To their surprise, 350 children showed up to take dance classes.

“It was the right time and the right place for Roswell,” Yilmaz said. “Families were moving in. It was the time that

things were changing.”

The studio is now located on Houze Way in a new 24,000-square-foot facility that opened last August.

“We have our own black box theater in there,” Yilmaz said. “We have Atlanta Dance Medicine as one of our tenants, so they see dancers for physical therapy and injuries. We have a full costume shop. I’m so excited about our costume shop, because we have a dry cleaning rack that we put our costumes on.”

The studio has grown from having two teachers to now 27 faculty members and 13 other staff members over the last 42 years.

Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance is a ballet-based studio that focuses on building a good ballet foundation and providing opportunities for students to also learn other styles of dance.

The studio offers ballet, hip hop, acrobatics, tap, and musical theater classes. Students can also learn how to perform using aerial silks.

In addition to the dance studio, the school has three performing companies.

One is the Roswell Dance Theatre, which is the ballet company students 10 years old and above can audition for annually.

The studio also offers a modern dance company and a pre-professional dance company. The pre-professional program consists of dancers that do ballet and modern dance who are on track to receive a college scholarship.

Members of the Roswell Dance Theatre have received scholarships to some of the finest performing arts schools in the country, like The American School of Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Marymount Manhattan College.

form for the New York Metropolitan Opera, Walt Disney Productions, Universal Studios, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Tyler Perry Studios.

In 2020, the studio had to reinvent itself during the pandemic. The studio was closed until July, so teachers and dancers shifted to virtual classes, recorded recital dances, using Zoom for every class.

Students began returning to the studio in July, about everyone was back

by September.

“So, what we did was we were extremely strict,” Yilmaz said. “We did not allow anyone in the studio before they had a temperature check, hand sanitizer and a mask. Then we had hired a cleaning crew to come in and clean the studio between each hour.”

The staff also created a carpool line for picking up and dropping off students. Only dancers and faculty members are allowed into the facility.

“The COVID guidelines that we have done have made it successful,” Yilmaz said, adding that their safety measures have not changed since the summer.

The studio has reported only two cases of COVID-19 among students since August and there are almost 1,000 dancers enrolled.

A study by the Mayo Clinic found that a diagnosis was changed or discovered in 21% of patients seeking a second opinion, and nearly 66% of all patients seeking a second opinion had their diagnosis refined. Receiving care for the wrong diagnosis or, more often, not receiving care for an undiagnosed issue can be life altering or sometimes even prove deadly.

Recently, a surprising number of patients have told me about experiences when their own initiative or a second opinion proved to be lifesaving. One patient was told that an incidental finding of low platelets (thrombocytopenia) was dismissed by his first physician as likely of little consequence. This patient sought a second opinion, and a bone marrow biopsy identified leukemia and led to treatment.

Another patient’s doctor told her that a mass could be watched and that since imaging was not necessary, it would not be covered by insurance. She paid out of her own pocket for a CT scan that identified the cancer that she suspected she had. Multiple other patients shared similar stories. And whereas this may come as a shock to some, it is, sadly, not surprising to me. Physicians are not infallible. I genuinely believe that patients should be their own advocate. Good physicians support their patients seeking additional professional opinions. In fact, my patients and I share similar stories because a second (fifth actually) opinion saved the life – or more accurately the quality and course of life – of my son: I count my blessings that my wife holds to her convictions and advocates for our family. Multiple “second” opinions at her insistence saved my oldest child from a lifetime of developmental struggles and unnecessary deafness. Our oldest effectively stopped talking at about 14 months old.

He never had a diagnosed or suspected ear infection. And although he would eventually turn towards us when we called his name, my wife was convinced that he could not hear. She took him to multiple pediatricians and was repeatedly dismissed with the counsel that “boys will be boys” and “not everyone is a talker.” These were board-certified, well-trained physicians.

Over the course of a year, his speech deteriorated from a dozen words at 14 months to only 2 words at 2 years old. A pediatric ENT, an audiologist and another pediatrician examined him and suggested autism, but when asked, they could not support their conclusions convincingly. The diagnosis just didn’t fit, as there were no other symptoms of autism.

Finally, at our second pediatric ENT and audiology appointment, the audiologist determined that the way sound waves

bounced back from his ear drums was not consistent with open, air-filled middle ears. Dr. Matthew Whitley (Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat of Atlanta) scheduled an appointment to place tubes in his ear drums and explore further. Shortly into the surgery, Dr. Whitley discovered that my son had “glue ear,” which is when a gluelike semisolid forms behind the ear drum.

Our son could hear sounds, which explains how he passed his first hearing test at one year old, but sounds were heard as if underwater, and he could not differentiate between many sounds which made speech unintelligible. Dr. Whitley inserted tubes, removed the glue-like material from our son’s middle ear and restored his hearing.

Within one week our son went from speaking two words to twenty words. We were informed that in a case such as our son’s, it would likely have taken years for the glue ear to resolve on its own. Had we stuck with our first, second, third, or fourth opinion, our son would have been severely affected by deafness (and thus speech) during critical developmental years.

Mohs surgery is a method of curing skin cancer by removing small pieces of tissue and checking the edges under the microscope until clear, cancer-free margins are obtained. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate (usually 99%) of any procedure for the most common skin cancers and is considered the gold standard treatment for skin cancer on the head and neck.

Physicians have an obligation to present patients with the most reasonable treatment options, even when that treatment option is not available in their own practice. I sleep well at night knowing that I genuinely give my patients treatment that I would not necessarily pick for myself. My job is to present facts and to be a guide but not to choose for my patients. Just today, I saw a patient who was referred to me for Mohs surgery of a basal cell carcinoma on the lower edge of the nose. We reviewed his treatment options together. He had never considered radiation therapy until I presented it as an alternative to Mohs surgery, and ultimately radiation therapy is what he selected. Likewise, I occasionally have patients referred to me for Mohs surgery who select imiquimod cream instead of surgery after I present it as a treatment option for certain types of basal cell carcinoma. When non-surgical options exist, it is a surgeon’s responsibility to help educate a patient about treatment options worth considering.

Milton basketball competes on national stage

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Fresh off the Class 7A boys state championship, Milton High School boys basketball showcased its talent in the national spotlight at the Geico Nationals April 1 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. The annual event, started in 2009, brings together some of the top high school basketball teams in the nation to compete for the tournament title.

Last week’s tournament featured nine boys teams from seven states.

Though Milton was eliminated from play in its opening game televised on ESPNU, the Eagles showed their mettle against IMG Academy, the No. 7 ranked program in the nation, according to MaxPreps, and winners of the 2019 GEICO Nationals.

Milton trailed 61-48 after three quarters but fought back in the final period to cut its deficit. The Eagles outscored IMG 20-12 in the fourth and came within one point late in the period, but their comeback bid fell short with IMG taking a 73-68 win.

Sophomore Kanaan Carlyle led the Eagles with 22 points and added three assists, two steals and a block. Carlyle

Committee began to consider ways it can promote its appeal to bikers and create a better harmony among the cycling community and drivers.

Following a discussion of the topic, the group agreed to forge ahead with plans to better align the city’s trails plan for use with bikers. The committee also plans to get the local cycling community involved in the process.

It’s white bass time in Georgia Spring is here again – and so are the white bass!!

The annual arrival of white bass in many of Georgia’s rivers is (like robins in the yard or new leaves on trees) definitive proof that STEVE HUDSON it’s really spring.

Get Outside Georgia, My dad always said aa4bw@comcast.net that the white bass show up about the time the dogwoods bloom. Early spring’s warming water and lengthening days cue these fish to move up from lakes to spawn in tributary streams, and that puts them within easy reach of anglers far and wide.

When the white bass runs happen, the numbers of fish in a given river can go from zero to zillions almost overnight. Males (typically in the half- to 1-pound range) come first and are already here. The larger females, which can range up to 2 pounds or larger, are starting to show up too.

Where can you find white bass?

Chattahoochee come immediately to mind and offer many opportunities for exploring.

Knowledgeable white bass enthusiasts consider the Coosa River below Mayo Lock and Dam Park to be the best white bass run in the state. This is one of the rivers where I discovered how much fun this hard-fighting fish can be. You’ll need a boat to fish the Coosa, and you’ll need to understand the ins and outs of running a boat on a large river. In other words, watch out for drifting logs and other boaters.

But the put-in is easy. There’s a great ramp at the park, and for a minimal ramp and parking fee you can launch there and fish your way downstream, then run back upriver to the ramp when you’re done.

If you don’t have a boat, you can still fish for white bass at Mayo. Many anglers fish from the old lock, but it can be crowded with fisherfolk during the peak of the white bass run.

More white bass adventure awaits on the Chestatee River. For instance, you can launch a canoe at the public river access on Ga. 60 (just west of Ga. 400) and ends a ways downriver at Lumpkin County Park. Conversely, if you’re in a powered boat, you can

start at the Lumpkin County Park ramp and make your way upriver to near the Ga. 400 bridge, then work your way down, fishing as you go.

Just be sure that you check a map (Google Earth is good) before you go to understand the lay of the land around Lumpkin County Park. Specifically, note that there’s a long, narrow piece of land that you may need

to go around or (if you’re in a canoe or kayak) portage across to get to the takeout ramp.

Another flow worth noting is Little River. One option is to launch a boat at Knox Bridge and run upriver. If you don’t have a powered boat, check out Olde Rope Mill Park on Little River

Continued from Page 19 just off 575. Anglers in the know will put in a kayak or canoe at the park and fish downstream toward or beyond the 575 bridge, returning to the park when they’re done. There are also spots to fish from the bank in this area. Wading may be possible, too, depending on where you are and on the level of Lake Allatoona (which rises steadily through the spring).

But don’t try to wade downstream of the pedestrian bridge. Recent dredging has made that water too deep to wade, though it’s still great for those in boats.

No matter where you decide to fish, remember that white bass are ambush predators. They tend to congregate below shoals, near creek mouths, near brush piles, close to sandbars, or near any other obstruction that breaks the flow. Look for such spots, and fish them thoroughly. If you hook one in a given spot then stay with that spot for a while. It’s not unusual to hook a half dozen or more fish before that particular school wises up and moves on.

What gear will you need to fish for white bass? For spin fishing, I use a medium action rod with 6- or 8-pound line. I tie on a white jig with a white curly-tail grub about 2 inches long (something that imitates small shad) and I’m set. Light colored in-line spinners or crankbaits will work, too, as will minnows.

These can be good flyrod fish too.

I usually pick up the 9 ft. 6 wt. rod and tie on a flashy, light-colored shad imitation such as a Rolex fly or the Red Nosed Yeti. A white Woolly Bugger will do the job too, and no matter the fly, remember that a little touch of red never hurts.

Because white bass are so much fun to catch, and probably also because they’re pretty good eating too, don’t be surprised to find good white bass water crowded with other anglers. Unless you can fish during the middle of the week, you probably won’t find solitude during the peak of the run. But that’s okay. There are plenty of fish, and everyone seems to be having a good time.

In most areas, the white bass action will continue well into April before the fish return to the depths of the lakes and move out of reach for most fly fishers. But while it’s on, the white bass runs offer a great opportunity for unforgettable fishing.

For the next few weeks, odds are I’ll be out there somewhere every chance I get. Say hello if you see me.

Dictionary entry ‘supposably’ making people mad Earlier this month, Dictionary.com added over 400 words to its online database, and at least one of those entries caused a stink among social media users, along with everything to ever take place in the observJOE PARKER able universe.

Editor The entry that joe@appenmediagroup.com poked the proverbial bear was “supposably,” a mispronunciation of “supposedly.”

Many argued the move was catering to the ignorant who mispronounce words or phrases. And though I cringe every time someone says “supposably” when they mean supposedly, I’m not offended by the update. Mainly because dictionaries merely catalogue words already used in common parlance, and dictionary.com is for people who struggle to spell words like “catalogue.”

I make my living through the English language — mainly because my Spanish language skills only include foods and incredibly inappropriate phrases thanks

to working as a professional cook for a decade — and it evolves over time.

For instance, if someone told you they love listening to heavy metal 100 years ago, you’d wonder how anyone could enjoy the sound of lead pipes being banged together. Now, of course, we know that heavy metal is a type of music created for people who have punched holes in their home’s drywall. And it sounds similar to lead pipes being banged together.

But if dictionary.com is going to start altering definitions in response to mispronunciations or misuse, I’ve decided to create a few of my own submissions that run along the lines of “supposably.”

Pacifically (adverb) — a way that is exact and clear, or for a particular purpose, not to be confused with how a ship traveled from California to Japan.

“I pacifically told him I needed those files by Friday even though by me using that word I clearly won’t be able to read them since I don’t have a grasp on the English language.

Literally (adverb) — figuratively (in common usage) “I went to the store and they were literally out of milk, there were only about

15 or 20 gallons left.”

Nucular (adjective, noun) — relating to atomic weapons or energy, or relating to a nucleus. Or, at least that’s the intent. “‘Nucular’ would be more accurate if it were used to describe the shade of orange on food products labeled ‘Cheeze,’ not a type of weapon.”

Artisanal (adjective) — Formerly; Made by skilled crafters, usually in small quantities or by using traditional methods. Updated definition; a marketing term that means the exact opposite of those things.

“This nationwide food company is labeling this bread as ‘artisanal’ even though it is made completely by automation and only differs from their other breads because it has some oats on the outer portion of the loaf.”

Spaghetti (noun) — A long, thin pasta used by many to describe every shape and type of pasta in existence.

“For the love of God, please stop calling that spaghetti, it is clearly penne, why do so many people do this!?”

The former quote can be attributed to this author.

Take (something) for granite (idiom) — Intended use; taking something for granted. What it sounds like; Using something in place of a specific type of igneous rock.

“Grant won’t take for granite the deal we got on our granite countertops, granted, the install period was extensive because we didn’t want to take the quartz for granite.”

I’m not alone, supposably, in wincing when certain words or phrases are mispronounced or misused. So, if you had to submit some to dictionary.com, what would they be?
