MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police are investigating a March 21 incident in which a man stole a wallet and cosmetic bag from a woman’s purse at Walmart.

The victim said she and a group of residents at a nearby assisted-living facility shopped at the store around 10:30 to 11 a.m. While checking out, the woman realized her wallet and cosmetic bag were missing. She did not report the theft to Walmart employees because she was worried about getting back to the bus on time.

Paint falls from truck, sprays woman’s car MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman reported a can of paint fell from a work vehicle and sprayed her car around 1 p.m. on March 28.

The woman said she was waiting to turn onto Ga. 9 and yielded to a white box truck. When she turned onto Ga. 9 behind the truck, she said she struck a can of brown paint that fell from the rear of the truck. She said the paint sprayed the undercarriage and side of her car.

The woman said she saw the truck turn onto Ga. 9 from a jobsite before she the incident took place.

The reporting officer spoke with the site manager who said he would contact the painters.

Store employee stops alleged skateboard theft MILTON, Ga. — A juvenile was cited for allegedly attempting to steal a skateboard from the Milton Walmart on March 28.

The employee stopped the juvenile but said she had to call police because the suspect did not give his information or provide an explanation for his actions, according to the police report.

The juvenile told a Milton officer his friends said the skateboard was obviously used and he did not see a price tag, so he should take it.

The suspect’s friends denied making those statements.

The juvenile gave police a false name, but officers later found his true identity.

He was cited for theft by shoplifting and giving a false name to police.

Woman reports robbery in Costco parking lot ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman contacted police March 21 after she reported being robbed at knifepoint in the Costco parking lot on Jordan Court.

The woman had left the store at 7:30 p.m. on March 18. When she was near her car, she was approached by a man carrying a knife. The man pointed the knife at her and demanded she hand over her wallet.

The woman complied, and the man also grabbed her shopping bags before running away.

The woman said she delayed reporting the incident because she was in shock and wasn’t sure what to do.

Burglar steals coin bags valued at $1,000 each ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a March 20 burglary at the AmeriPark office at Avalon.

The business manager said the office had been secured the previous evening.

When he came into work at 9:30 a.m., he saw that someone had removed two bags full of $1,000 worth of coins. One parking meter key was also missing.

Officers said the suspect entered the office by punching through the sheetrock next to the door and used a bar to unlock the door from the inside. Two shoe impressions were found in the office.

The manager said he had recently terminated several employees.

Alpharetta man arrested for shooting gun at door ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man March 19 after he shot at a door lock while authorities say he was intoxicated.

A caller living on Gardner Drive alerted police about gunfire shortly before midnight.

Officers identified the man suspected of shooting the gun and found eight bullets in his pocket. The gun was found by a K-9 near the apartment.

Planning Commission gives thumbs up to townhome development

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Planning Commission credited a developer for tailoring his site plan to accommodate the requests of the city and nearby residents and recommended approval for 54 townhomes along Bethany Bend. The board also recommended the approval of three variances.

“I want to thank the applicant,” commission Chair Paul Moore said. “It looks like you guys have done a lot of work to address some of the things we suggested warranted further review. It sounds like you continued to engage the community as well as city staff. It looks like you continued to make progress and I thank you for your due diligence.”

The recommendation for approval comes after a string of changes to the site plan and deferments by the Planning Commission and City Council.

The commission originally heard the rezoning request last December and recommended approval. However, it was later discovered that the board had been given incorrect information regarding a previous rezoning at the site, and the City Council deferred the request back to planners. The Planning Commission deferred the rezoning case again at its Feb. 27 meeting, requesting the applicant address their concerns over guest parking, fencing, width of the internal road, architectural materials and buffers.

The board originally heard the case in December, but the City Council deferred the rezoning request back to the Planning Commission in January after the city discovered the commission was given incorrect information during its first hearing. plan presented March 27 addressed many of those issues, including a widened road, additional parking in alleyways and an extension of a buffer from 20 to 35 feet.

Neighboring residents in the Hidden Forest subdivision of Forsyth County met with the applicants and submitted their signatures for approval of the buf-

fer plan. At the request of nearby residents, the updated design also showed the deletion of a portion of fence and a potential reduction in the length of some townhomes to allow for a natural area on the rear property line.

“The applicant has gone to great lengths to engage the community and nearby property owners and addressed

our concerns to a great extent, though not completely,” Moore said. “I think the product put forward has value to the community, and I think it is a problematic lot that warrants consideration of a project like this.”

Commissioner Fred Edwards said the board should accept the hardships because the design and work the applicant has shown warrants its approval.

The variance requests include the deletion of a 75-foot undisturbed buffer to be replaced with a 35-foot landscaped buffer which had the approval of nearby homeowners. The board also recommended requests to waive the requirement that a certain percentage of the townhomes be constructed with natural masonry materials under conditions of the Ga. 9 Overlay District.

Under terms of the commission’s approval, Bajun will be required to cooperate with the city architect and Design Review Board and use only materials from a list submitted to the city by the applicant and the architecture should be consistent with the drawing submitted.

Ron Gilbert cast the only dissenting vote with Chris Doty absent from the meeting. Gilbert said Bajun took risks when acquiring the property, which includes a 1.4-acre floodplain, and that the commission was being asked to make residents pay for an incurred business risk.

The City Council will likely hear the request at its April 22 regularly scheduled meeting.

Karen Handel launches campaign

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Former U.S. Rep. Karen Handel recently announced that she will run for her former seat, representing Georgia’s 6th District, in 2020.

Handel lost the seat to Democrat Lucy McBath in November 2018 by 1 percent, or about 3,000 votes.

The district includes most of North

Fulton County — including Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek and Milton — and parts of eastern Cobb County and northern DeKalb County. The seat was once considered a GOP stronghold, electing Republicans from 1978 until McBath’s victory.

In a video announcing her campaign, Handel cites the economy, veterans and military, the opioid crisis and human trafficking as key issues to her platform.

Handel served on the Fulton County Board of Commissioners from 2003 to 2006, when she won her bid for Georgia Secretary of State.

In 2010, she ran for governor, but lost to former Gov. Nathan Deal. She also ran an unsuccessful bid for Senate in 2014.

Handel became the first Republican woman from Georgia elected to Congress in 2017 after narrowly defeating Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff in the special election to replace former Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price. The race attracted national attention and became the most expensive House race in U.S. history.

Before facing a rematch against McBath, Handel will have to make it out of the Republican primary. Republican State Sen. Brandon Beach of Alpharetta announced in January he intends to run for the seat as well.

Beach, now in his fourth term in

the Georgia Senate, serves as chairman of the Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee and as secretary of the TransHandel portation Committee.

Both Beach and Handel have served as the president and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Handel’s website already features endorsements from her former colleagues in Congress, Reps. Rob Woodall, Doug Collins, Austin Scott, Drew Ferguson, Buddy Carter and Tom Graves, and former Reps. Newt Gingrich and Price.

It also lists endorsements from local leaders including Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, Johns Creek City Councilman Steve Broadbent, Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood, Milton City Councilwoman Carol Cookerly and Roswell City Council members Matt Judy and Matt Tyser.

New private school proposed in Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Residents got their first look at a proposed K-8 private school at a Community Zoning Information Meeting March 26. The applicant is seeking a use permit for the school located at the intersection of Freemanville Road and Redd Road.

The Premo School would include six classrooms and employ six full-time teachers with a maximum of 80 students. The 7,000-square foot school would be in session from 7:10 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

According to a letter from the applicant, Evera Premo, The Premo School would emphasize sustainability and respect for the environment and will use the existing barn facilities on the site to house chickens and other farm animals.

The school’s entrance will be located on Redd Road with an asphalt road running parallel to Freemanville Road in front of the school. Gravel from an existing greenhouse pad will be reused for parking spaces and a pick-up/dropoff area in the northern section of the 5.7-acre site.

The applicant has proposed a

four-board equestrian fence along the property on Freemanville Road and Redd Road.

The applicant is also requesting two variances, including deleting the 75-foot undisturbed buffer and 10-foot improvement setback on the eastern portion of the property to include a proposed ADA ramp, parking and privacy fencing. A variance to delete the 100-foot setback on the eastern property line has also been requested.

“Because we are unable to demolish the structure and build from scratch, the variances are crucial to the purchase of this property,” a letter from the ap-

plicant said.

The letter also stated the applicant has been made aware there will be a need for either right of way acquisition or an easement at the intersection of Freemaville Road and Redd Road for the city’s proposed trail system.

“We are fully in support of the Milton trail initiative and will cooperate as needed to be a good neighbor,” the letter said.

The Premo School currently has an operating campus in Roswell.

The proposal is set to go before the Design Review Board April 9 and to the Planning Commission April 24

Fulton Schools staff to get raises in FY20

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – A preview of the Fiscal Year 2020 budget for the Fulton School System includes employee raises, but also reflects challenges to the district as it absorbs lower tax revenues and diminishing state funds linked to declining enrollment.

Managing the challenges, noted district officials, will rely on Fulton’s healthy reserve funds and cost-cutting measures implemented this year.

During a board meeting in March, Chief Financial Officer Robert Morales outlined the revenue forecast for FY20, expenditure projections and the next steps in the coming months. The School Board is expected to approve the budget in June; the fiscal year starts July 1.

Early projections are a district budget between $1.03 billion to $1.07 billion, depending on state action on funding for teacher raises. The current year’s budget is $1.09 billion.

The biggest impact to the district’s revenue picture is the cap on residential property assessments passed by Fulton

voters last year. The new law resets the taxable portion of residential property values to their lowest level over the past three years, then allows a maximum of a 3 percent increase in subsequent years.

Morales described the impact as a “funding cliff” for the school system.

“We are facing an initial decline in local tax revenue [since] the referendum overwhelmingly passed,” Morales said.

“Fortunately, our board policy allows the district’s fund balance to be used to bridge the decline.”

A declining enrollment next year also comes with a reduction in state funding by $5 million. The state is also increasing the amount withheld for its “fair share” allotment which withholds earned state funding from wealthier districts to redistribute to those less wealthy.

The system may be able to recoup some of that funding by ensuring all students are categorized correctly based on the services the student receives.

Morales said the district has also aggressively looked at strategies to increase revenue streams and cut costs through districtwide belt-tightening.

The FY20 budget projection includes

elimination of several non-teaching positions, and across-the-board reductions in central office departments.

Early revenue projections show existing homestead exemptions and the property tax cap will result in a 4 percent decline from 2019.

Highlights of the proposed FY2020 budget include at least a $35.5 million allotment to fund teacher and staff raises. The move follows the state’s approval of additional state funding for teacher raises, which were a key part of Gov. Brian Kemp’s campaign.

Kemp originally proposed a $5,000 raise for all teachers. It appears the Legislature will fund $3,000 this year — 60 percent of the governor’s goal — and revisit the issue in later years. While no state money was allocated for other staff, state lawmakers urged districts to find that money locally.

Fulton School’s budget for FY20 includes the state recommendation for teachers along with a mid-year step for eligible staff; a 3 percent salary increase and mid-year step for non-teaching staff (paraprofessionals, clinic aids, bus drivers, food service, etc.); and a 2 percent raise

Ron Wade, director of Talent Management for Fulton Schools, said a competitive salary is the key to attracting and retaining top employees, and Fulton has a history of making that a priority.

“The Fulton School Board has made a consistent commitment and effort over the last 10 years of positively impacting the earnings of our employees,” Wade said. He noted even during the recession when many districts were furloughing staff, Fulton offered one-time bonuses to employees.

Milton Community Theatre set to debut first production

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Showtime is nearing for the first production from Milton Community Theatre, the newly-formed troupe performing under the banner of the nonprofit Milton Art’s Council. Tickets are now on sale for the group’s production of Neil Simon’s comedy, “Rumors,” which debuts next week.

The show will run April 12-14 and April 19-21 at Northwestern Middle School. Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. performances on Sundays.

“Rumors” takes place during the 10year anniversary party of the New York Deputy Mayor Charlie Brock.

“The guests find Charlie shot and his wife is nowhere to be found,” said director Jonathan Goff. “They try to put the story together because they can’t get the story from Charlie. It gets really out of hand and ends up being hilarious. The story is intriguing and it has wit baked into it.”

Goff said he caught the theatre bug at an early age and has been fortunate to perform with talented people and theatre groups for the past 20 years. Recently, he has made the transition from on-stage talent to the director’s chair,

and is excited to bring Milton its first community theatre production.

“It has been interesting because the entire group has a serious passion for bringing theater to Milton, but a lot of the initial group doesn’t have extensive experience,” Goff said. “But those who do have experience have stepped up and have provided a guidance. I think the only growing pain has been all the logistics, and we’ve all learned a lot.”

Much of the experience within the group comes from the actors performing in “Rumors,” including Jeremy Choate who plays the part of Lenny Ganz.

“Lenny is the accountant for Charlie Brock, and he calls Charlie his best friend,” Choate said. “The thing I like about Lenny is he is the smart aleck of the show. He and his wife Claire are really sarcastic and play off each other. It’s a fun character to play.”

Choate lettered in drama in high school, but then spent six years in the Marines and began his family and career as an electrical engineer. After a near 30-year hiatus from the stage, he took up his passion for acting again and has been performing with ACT1 Theater in Alpharetta and Atlanta Theatre-To-Go. Choate has also previously worked under Goff’s direction.

Like Choate, most of the actors are active in other community theater groups, and they are excited to promote the arts in Milton.

What the City of Milton doesn’t want you to know Recently, I received a survey card from the City of Milton.

Not one question was about the dying equestrian community. A question did cover “rural character”, but in today’s Milton, when a new subdivision constructs a black fence at the entrance, such is considered “rural character.”

Upon incorporation in 2006, all emergency vehicles had horse decals showcased. Today, only the fire trucks have it. Fire and police have a horse patch on their uniforms. Watch — that horse patch will drop off soon. There used to be the “Milton Round Up,” a festival with horse themes prominent. It too has died, with “Crabapple Fest” being

the annual celebration.

Milton has blocked the presentation of the proposed horse protection ordinance “Liberty’s Law” (libertyslaw. blogspot.com) countless times even though other municipalities that don’t claim to be “an equestrian community” allowed its presentation. Since then, two horses have died due to fireworks and many others are terrorized due to fireworks and harassment.

The recent five year parks plan has no equestrian facilities included. Milton continues to spend millions on land with their Greenspace Bond money. Many of the few remaining horse farms are for sale and not one has been purchased

Check active horse farm listings, they are all open to a developer’s call. Over 70 percent of Milton is subdivisions now.

Economics sway decisions. For most, our property is our biggest asset. An area’s changing of the guard can have a dramatic effect. Horse farms, pastures, and serenity are the exact opposite of subdivisions, manicured lawns, noise pollution and related traffic. One is not better than the other, just completely different. To believe that both can coexist is not reality.

Milton could have been the equestrian capital of Georgia if the powers offered incentives and related infrastructure out of the gate. Look at how Peachtree City became the golf capital of the state. However, a different road was taken and the end result is today. Have you seen Crabapple lately?

I encourage the dwindling demographic of land owners to unite and look out for one another. The City of Milton is pulling no punches trying to hold onto a falsehood, be it with tax incentives or illegal land rules, killing our property values and futures in the process.

Milton could have been the equestrian capital of Georgia if the powers offered incentives and related infrastructure out of the gate.

They ignore the reality that Milton is Dunwoody — light already with more change to come and not horse friendly.

They have refused to give the equestrian lifestyle a voice, protection or support.

All they do is wallpaper horse pictures on city letter head, signage and website.

With such a facade and facts, why would any horse person want to stay or move here? Life is short and there is cheaper land offering true serenity elsewhere.

2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback Isaac Asimov issued many predictions in a New York Times article highlighting the 1964 World’s Fair and what such a fair would be like in 50 years.

Some of his JOE PARKER predictions turned Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com out to be fairly accurate. The author and biochemistry professor prophesied the world’s population would double by 2014, which it did, plus another few hundred million. He predicted that machines would outperform humans in many routine jobs, and that “mankind will therefore have become largely a race of machine tenders.”

In a way, Asimov predicted FaceTime, Skype and video calling, stating “Communications will be sight-sound, and you will see as well as hear the person you telephone.” He also foretold of computers being “much miniaturized that will serve as the brains of robots.”

Extremely precise when you consider the smartphone and, though he may not have predicted it this way, how it has turned every teenager into a robot that only has three audio responses, two of which are grunts.

Of course, Asimov was no perfect soothsayer. Unsurprisingly he also penned many forecasts that greatly missed the mark.

Asimov said appliances would be powered by radioisotopes and the United States would likely have one or two experimental fusion power plants by 2014.

Even five years after that, it looks as if such technologies are still far, far away from reality.

I wish this one were true, but Asimov foretold of homes where ceilings and walls glow softly in a variety of colors that will change at the touch of a button.

And in case you forgot this is a car review (or is supposed to be, anyway), Asimov predicted the way we would get around.

Like his other forecasts, the writer was accurate in some regards but wildly off in others.

The raised, moving sidewalks he predicted would become a staple in urban areas are seemingly only found in airports, used by people who suddenly forget how to walk while upon them. His prediction of vehicles traveling on a bed of compressed air is only accurate if you consider hovercrafts, which I imagine are not too easy to navigate in traffic.

Nothing has come of what Asimov described as “one of the city’s marvels” —

compressed air tubes that would carry goods and materials to specific locations.

Amazon is trying something similar with its drone delivery, but even with people ordering toilet paper online, I don’t think it is quite up to the scale Asimov presumed.

But he was spot on for his prediction of the engineering of driverless cars.

“Much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with ‘robot-brains,’ vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflections of a human driver,” Asimov wrote.

That brings me to the 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback (Editor: Finally!), because it shows us how technology once thought of as the makings of sci-fi is now commonplace, while simultaneously proving that some things are better left unchanged.

Despite testing the base, SE Corolla, it still included loads of “robot brains.”

The Corolla hatch comes standard with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, radar guided active cruise control, lane departure alert that will give the wheel a nudge to keep you in the white lines, and automatic high beam headlights. New for 2019 is a Lane Tracing Assist which supplements the dynamic cruise control by providing “steering assistance” when no lane makers are present. Toyota has also added Road Sign Assist which identifies certain road signs and displays visual and audio warnings if, for instance, you are about to roll through a four-way stop.

That is a lot of technology banking that “robots” can do routine tasks better than humans. The Corolla hatchback SE is, depending on your transmission choice, just over $20,000, and that amount of tech for the price shows that

the future has arrived.

But the Corolla is not all pills replacing meals or daily flights to Mars, it also gives us a glimpse of where we came from. And I mean that in the best way.

For starters, it’s a hatchback, and that is a designation that slowly seems to be dying amid the flood of crossovers and SUVs. I happen to be of the mindset that hatchbacks are, in many important ways, superior to crossovers.

A hatch provides all the space, convenience and practicality of a crossover while typically offering a better ride, far superior handling characteristics, more efficient fuel economy and, often enough, better looks.

While the hatchback in 2019 may seem a thing of the past, nothing harkens to yesteryear more than the way our tester Corolla changed gears — a manual transmission. Not a dual-clutch, not a CVT, no, a good old fashioned clutch pedal and a lever in the middle of the car.

Although, calling the Corolla hatchback’s third pedal a clutch gives the wrong impression. It implies it must be pushed down to engage, when in fact, the Corolla’s clutch is easier to depress than Eeyore.

With its easy-to-shift transmission, the Corolla serves up silky smooth gear changes and adds a bit of fun to the hatchback.

It’s not something you often hear connected — Corolla and fun — but the hatchback does provide an enjoyable drive.

It doesn’t hit the mark of a hot hatch, however. The 168-horsepower fourcylinder is initially sprightly but runs out of steam around 4,000 rpm, and the

Corolla’s steering is a bit feathery and it suffers from understeer in corners.

But its small stature and peppiness does make for a not-so-boring commute.

That diminutive size does come into play where room in the hatchback is concerned. While things are spacious for those in the front seats, it’s cramped for adults in the rear.

The Toyota provides 18 cubic-feet of storage space with the rear seats erected, which goes against my aforementioned argument that hatches are just as accommodating as most similarly-sized crossovers.

Sure, it’ll haul home the groceries, but hauling bulky items like large strollers will be a challenge.

The Corolla sports the angular, trapezoidal styling of new Toyota’s, but unlike other offerings, it seems to fit well on the hatchback. While there are not many frills to the interior styling, it’s simple, clean and user-friendly.

The interior also features an 8-inch infotainment panel, USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity (sorry, Android users), LATCH anchors for the rear seats and a leather steering wheel as standard on the base SE trim with added amenities in the XSE level.

While the Corolla hatch is not powered by radioisotopes, it won’t cripple your wallet while filling up with old-fashioned gasoline. Estimated fuel economy is 31 combined mpg in the SE with a manual transmission and 36 combined in the automatic.

Unlike Asimov, I’m not one for making predictions. However, if you are in the market for a small, affordable, not too frilly but well-equipped and peppywithout-being-a-hot-hatch hatchback, I’ll forecast your approval of the Corolla.

Local 6 year old wins international piano competition

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — William Zhang’s parents knew their son was pretty good at playing piano when they entered him in his first competition. What they weren’t expecting was for their 6-yearold to win first place in the 2019 American Protege International Piano and String Competition.

And it didn’t stop there — William also earned the Judge’s Distinction Award across all age groups.

His parents, Julie Wang and Todd Zhang, said they are still reeling from the accolades.

“The day when we received the notice about William’s winning, he did a little dance on the floor,” Julie said. “He was over the moon.”

This year saw a record number of musicians apply to the American Protege International Piano and String Competition. Participants applied from 17 countries, including the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Israel, China, India, Australia and New Zealand. All instruments, including voice, could enter.

Judges evaluated performances for

four groups, based on age.

As a grand winner, William was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall on March 31, where he performed the first movement of Mozart’s “Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major,” K 545, one of the very pieces William played to win the competition.

“Music is very rich media,” Julie said. “Music can express the unexpressed. There are many different facets of elements in music. When music plays, there are beautiful images and heart-touching poetry. All these invoke the imagination in kids.

What is the most important to us is that music has the magic to talk to the heart in the language of love. Other than any practical benefits of music education — such as improving motor skills, coordination, and boosting selfconfidence, etc. — we feel the foremost important benefit is that music teaches kids about love.”

William first showed a keen interest in music when he was 2, and he began to take serious music lessons at age 4, Todd said.

He is currently homeschooled so he can take half days for piano lessons from internationally-renowned concert pianist and professor Raffi Besalyan at Georgia

State University.

Aside from music, Julie said William also enjoys reading, drawing and swimming. But for the immediate future, William will continue to focus on his piano studies.

“One of the most important reasons we encourage William to learn music and piano is because he is always so happy when he plays the piano,” Julie said. “We would love William to perform for the community to bring music to more people and share his happiness about music.”

She added that the family also wants to help reach out to local communities to promote music education.

When William’s win was first announced online, Julie recounted that she heard a comment: “Sad that you’ll never see this in the black community.”

“This comment broke our heart,” Julie said. “We want to reach out to the communities where music education resource is scarce and do what we can to help with the music education there.”

Democrats talk Medicaid, abortion at town hall

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — As the end of the 2019 legislative session loomed, Democratic representatives held a town hall to discuss Medicaid waivers, abortion legislation and other healthcare topics.

Democrats made notable gains in the Atlanta suburbs during last November’s election, and many of these freshman legislators made Medicaid expansion and other health care issues key to their platforms.

March 24, a little over the week before the final day of the legislative season, some of these Democrats shared their thoughts on the year’s biggest pieces of legislation and goals for the future.

The elected officials in attendance were State Sen. Sally Harrell (District 40) and State Reps. Mary Robichaux (District 48), Angelika Kausche (District 50), Josh McLaurin (District 51) and ElMahdi Holly (District 111) The event was organized by Indivisible 6th District, Democratic grassroots group, and moderated by Steven Knight Griffin, the former policy adviser for the Center for Disease Control who lost to Rep. Lucy McBath in the Democratic primary for the 6th Congressional District last year.

Organizers said they also invited Republican legislators House Speaker Pro-Tem Jan Jones, State Sen. John Albers, State Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick and State Rep. Chuck Martin, but they did not participate.

One of the main topics discussed at the town hall was abortion. At the time, under consideration was House Bill 481, also known as the “heartbeat bill,” which would ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, or roughly six weeks into a pregnancy.

The bill passed the House on March 29, sending it to the governor’s desk.

Holly, Kausche, McLaurin and Robichaux voted against the bill, as they said they would. Martin voted with Democrats against the bill.

“It allows the government to come between a person and their family, in one of their most vulnerable times, and their physician, which is just not right,” said Robichaux, who represents Roswell.

McLaurin, who represents parts of Sandy Springs and Johns Creek, said there were many aspects of the bill he disagrees with, but he found it “particularly cruel” to require women to file a police report to receive an exception for rape or incest.

Angelika Kausche State Rep. in these situations,” he said. “Forcing someone who is going through that kind of emotional trauma to not have access to this care unless they participate in a law enforcement process, it’s downright cruel.”

“Some of these guys — and it’s 90 percent guys who are behind this bill — think they are doing the right thing,” McLaurin said. “They’re ideological about it, but I’m sorry, I don’t see any rationale for putting this bill forward other than a raw desire to control women’s bodies.”

Along with abortion, much of the town hall was devoted to the topic of

Medicaid expansion.

The Democrats all supported expanding Medicaid coverage for people with income at 44 percent of the poverty line to 133 percent. A component of former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, the federal government would provide 90 percent of funding for the expansion.

Proponents of expanding Medicaid say it would bring federal dollars back to Georgia, bolster rural healthcare providers and bring coverage to between 200,000 and 500,000 Georgians.

March 27, Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill into law that pursues a study of limited Medicaid expansion. The law allows Kemp to ask for a waiver from the federal government to expand Medicaid under Georgia’s own terms.

Democrats criticized the waiver bill for stripping power from the Legislature and giving too much to the governor, and for delaying expansion for two years while the details of the waiver program could be studied.

“What they want to do is [include] fewer people at a higher cost — because they don’t get the full 90 percent match since it doesn’t go as high as it’s supposed to — and it starts later,” McLaurin said. “That’s not a true Medicaid expansion.”

Kausche, who represents Johns Creek, said the waiver program leaves a lot of uncertainty.

“It doesn’t say what they’re going to do finally,” she said. “It just says we’re going to study it … There’s a lot of leeway and a lot of unknowns which could actually lead to an average increase in cost for consumers.”

During the audience Q&A, one attendee asked the officials about “Medicare for All,” a slogan coined by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to generally mean a federal single-payer health care system.

Harrell said if she were a member of Congress, she would definitely support Medicare for All, but for now, she is looking at things that can more practically be implemented in Georgia.

Kausche said she supports some form of universal healthcare, but does not necessarily mean a single-payer system. She also said the U.S. should look to other countries as an example, drawing on her own experience growing under Germany’s two-tiered healthcare system.

“No system is perfect,” she said. “But the cost is much lower and the patients are covered, so I think we should start thinking about solutions like this. We have to because that’s the only way we are going to cover more people.”

Jones, Albers, Kirkpatrick and Martin were contacted for comment, but did not respond by press time.

Milton, Alpharetta business groups connect

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Though Alpharetta and Milton are two distinct cities, they are still intertwined in the North Fulton community, and the partnership with the Milton Business Alliance and Alpharetta Business Association furthers that connectivity. That was the message given by each organization’s leader at the joint meeting between the groups March 28 at Office Evolution in Alpharetta.

The annual joint meetings began three years ago, and have been a boon for connecting businesses in the neighboring cities.

“It only seemed right that because Milton and Alpharetta partner in so many things that the ABA and MBA should also partner,” said Milton Business Alliance Chairwoman Sharon Mays.

“We’re trying to build businesses and help them thrive, and we can do it better together.”

Peg Hussing, chairwoman of the Alpharetta Business Association, said the partnership also made sense.

“They are a small business association just as we are, so we are very clearminded, we just love doing it and always have a good turnout,” Hussing said.

The neighboring organizations do vary in some aspects. Both groups concentrate on networking, but the ABA also puts on its annual farmer’s market and Brew Moon Fest while the MBA is more partnership-based and supports local charities and offers scholarships.

Both groups also have a wide array from businesses, with Milton comprised mostly of smaller companies.

“This brings the whole business community together,” she said. “We can always get new ideas. In the first year it was such a hit we thought we should make it an annual thing. Everyone liked seeing new faces and new businesses partnerships were formed. It gives everyone a chance for more business exposure.”

Building the local business community is also a priority for the ABA. “Alpharetta has its Chamber of Commerce, and often we are asked the difference the chamber and the ABA,” Hussing said. “The answer is the ABA is more community-minded, just like the MBA. We take care of our own. I think they are both great organizations.”

The community mindset is particularly important for Milton, which has

three distinct businesses areas — downtown Crabapple, the Deerfield Parkway area and the Birmingham Crossroads.

“With Milton having three commercial zones, it’s really important to get the business community to connect because they are not physically connected,” Mays said. “We need to play more of an active role to help them stay connected and draw attention to all businesses in Milton.”

Both organization leaders also outlined upcoming events for their respective groups, including an outdoor event for the MBA at The Green near Milton City Hall, and the ABA’s farmer’s market which begins April 13.

“We already have 80-something vendors signed up, and it’s going to be a great event,” Hussing said.

The art of creating successful communities The development scene in Atlanta has come a long way since back in the 1980s, when we were just blasting off into what many called the era of “suburban sprawl.” Business was booming and Geoff smith people were moving to Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com the metro area from all over the world.

Hundreds of large neighborhoods were built up and down I-85 and I-75 throughout Cobb and Gwinnett Counties, then up and down Ga. 400 throughout North Fulton. There was so much demand for goods and services that almost any commercial development that was built became immediately successful. Our level of expectations for the development that surrounded us was not nearly as high as it is today.

Most of the cities and counties were thrilled to swell their tax base. It was a land-grab, and our level of sophistication when it came to community planning was comparatively low.

Early in the 2000s, the term “mixeduse” started to become popular. Folks that had been here started looking around their communities and they began wanting more. City planners with better expertise took positions, and people began wanting to have more of a sense of place in the areas where they lived. They wanted a town center feel.

The term “strip malls” became an ugly phrase.

We started to see things like Atlantic Station, and people liked that.

Suwanee, Duluth and Woodstock began construction on town centers that have since attracted hundreds of new residents, businesses and private-investment development. And we were moving into an era of a new kind of development and everyone wanted mixed-use.

Then the bottom fell out with the crash in 2008.

We emerged into a system where

There needed to be a new model for mixed-use development. And that new model was Avalon. banks demanded more from their developers. Banks wanted to see proof of a project’s long-term viability. No longer was it good enough for a builder to put different uses next to each other and call it “mixed-use.” The developer had to show how those uses played well off of each other, each adding to the area’s micro-economy.

As such, there needed to be a new model for mixed-use development. And that new model was Avalon.

I was lucky last week to host on my radio show Lamar Wakefield. His firm, Wakefield-Beasley, worked with Mark Toro’s North American Properties to develop Avalon. The project led to Wakefield-Beasley designing The Battery at Suntrust Park, Halcyon in Forsyth County, Revel in Gwinnett County and town centers all across the metro area and Avalon-like projects in areas across the country.

For a quality designer and planner like Wakefield-Beasley, there is a significant amount of research that first goes into understanding a project’s surroundings those who live there. He does a specific study to understand everyone in a 3-mile, a 5-mile and a 10mile radius. Some retailers, like a pizza restaurant for example, will only draw from people within a 3-mile radius.

Others, like a Whole Foods, might bring people in from a full 10-mile radius. In

the case of Avalon, the 10-mile radius around it was the most affluent 10-mile radius anywhere in the country at the time of construction, Wakefield said.

It was important for them to understand the shopping tendencies of the people in each radius so they could figure out which retailers they wanted to pull into their project. When a developer is betting hundreds of millions of dollars on a development, this kind of information is critical.

My conversation had me wondering if city planners take into account the same information when they look to approve single-use, or smaller-scale variances in their cities. Most of those developers are building with the intention of selling the project after construction is complete. And there should be more pressure on the city planners to determine the project’s economic viability, as well as its economic impact on the surrounding areas.

Citizen groups all over the metro area are being formed to try to determine what residents would like to see developed in their towns. But shouldn’t the first order of business really be to first understand what kinds of development their towns can support? They need the critical information and data that folks like Wakefield collect. They need an expert to understand that data. And they need an artist to show how that data can be incorporated into the development of a site in a way that makes their city better.

Small businesses face their own set of common perils As a small business owner, what are your top challenges?

Every month I talk or meet with hundreds of small business owners, and lately the list of their top challenges have been pretty consistent. Believe it or not, it is not just about the money you pay your employees, but their overall experience and freedom to enjoy life as well.

At the top of the list is business growth. With a strong U.S. economy, small business owners are citing growth as their top priority and their access to working capital as being a critical success factor to enable this.

Low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States and affects millions of people every year.

Many times people look to get an x-ray or an MRI to explain “why” they are hurting. But recent research has suggested that the findings on your MRI may not explain why your back is actually hurting. In fact, one of the most common causes of low back pain is not even seen on MRI. If it’s not seen, then it’s usually not treated. At the presentation we will discuss the top three common causes of low back pain and sciatica. We will also discuss why the finding on your MRI may have nothing to do with why you’re having low back pain.

Finally, we will show you a few simple things that you can do to relieve your back pain naturally, without medications, injections, or surgery.

Shoulder pain, especially pain coming from the rotator cuff, is a common problem as we approach our retirement years.

A loss of flexibility, overuse, and repetitive trauma are often to blame for most shoulder injuries.

But sometimes shoulder pain can be coming from a problem in the neck. At this presentation we will explain the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain and how a problem in one area can cause pain in the other. You will also learn how to determine where your pain is likely coming from. If you only treat your symptoms, you may never fully address the problem and find complete symptom relief. Most orthopedic surgeons have their patients try physical therapy first for the treatment of neck and shoulder pain. At this presentation, we’ll explain why.

1:00 Understanding Foot and Heel Pain.

Many times foot and heel pain is rather easy to diagnose. That searing pain in the bottom of your foot with the first steps of the day is normally diagnosed as plantar fasciitis. Pain in the back of the heel, especially with increased activity, is often diagnosed as a problem with the Achilles tendon.

It doesn’t take a medical degree to know this. But how do you treat these two stubborn problems? In many cases, even though the pain might be in your foot, the real problem is likely somewhere else.

If you don’t treat the actual source of the problem, you will find yourself constantly chasing your symptoms. At the Foot and Heel Pain discussion, we will share with you why treating only the foot is not likely going to resolve your pain. We will also discuss how you can find the real source of the pain, treat that problem effectively, and get back to being active again.

Make sure you have a wellprepared retirement plan Providing for health care is a key part of retirement planning. For most Americans age 65 and over, Medicare, and its various components, provides most of the resources to take care of a typical retiree’s health care needs.

One health care need that is only minimally covered by Medicare is that of long-term care (LTC). LTC is the term used to describe a variety of maintenance or “custodial” services required by individuals who are chronically disabled, ill, or infirm. LTC may include nursing home care, assisted living, home health care, or adult day care.

Long-term care is expensive. In 2018, the national median cost in an assisted living facility was $48,000 per year; the national median cost for a semi-private nursing home room was $89,425 per year.

The problem, then, is how to plan for an expensive need that may, or may not, occur.

One answer has been that of a standalone, LTC insurance policy. Should the need arise, a LTC policy can furnish some or all of the resources needed to pay for care. LTC insurance can be expensive and most policies allow for the possibility of future rate increases. Plus, if few (or none) of a policy’s benefits are

used, there is a sense that the money was not well spent.

One alternative to a stand-alone LTC insurance policy is a “combination” policy that links an annuity with a tax-qualified, long-term care benefit.

If LTC services are later needed, the accumulated value inside the annuity is withdrawn first to pay LTC expenses.

If on-going LTC expenses exhaust the funds inside the annuity, additional, tax-qualified LTC coverage may be provided by the insurance company through a LTC “rider” to the base annuity. If LTC services are not needed, the annuity value can be used to either provide additional income, or, at the owner’s death, can pass to named beneficiaries.

One key part of a well-prepared retirement plan is looking ahead to the possible need for long-term care. The advice and guidance of trained financial and insurance professionals, in sorting out the various options for meeting this need, is strongly recommended. Bulldogs shut down region leaders Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Forsyth Central baseball handed Milton its first Region 5-AAAAAAA loss of the season Wednesday and took the second contest of the three-game series Friday with a 3-1 win on the road.

Bulldogs’ starter Jacob Ryan earned the win with an impressive performance.

The senior pitched six innings, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts and four walks.

Central head coach Kevin McCollum said a turning point in Ryan’s performance was his ability to get the team out of a tough spot in the bottom of the second.

Milton’s Tyler McLoughlin and Josh Carrico singled to open the frame, and a walk loaded the bases with no outs.

Ryan responded by throwing a full-count strikeout.

The Eagles scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitch Landon, but Ryan picked off Carrico at second to end the inning. “[Ryan] worked his way out of it only giving up one run, that was huge,” McCollum said. “By then we took a little better approach at the plate and put some more balls in play.”

A costly error by Milton allowed the Bulldogs to respond with a run in the top of the third. With one out, Chase Hillenbrand hit a slow grounder to Milton

second baseman Curt McDonnell, who threw the ball beyond the reach of his first baseman trying to get the force out before Hillenbrand ran out the play.

Hillenbrand later scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitchell Gross.

Ryan helped his own cause in the top of the fourth when he hit a two-out, RBI single with a slow chopper over the mound to score Luke Owens.

“The guys are seeing the results with putting the ball in play,” McCollum said, “just playing small ball and seeing what happens.”

With Ryan continuing to frustrate Milton hitters, the Bulldogs added a run in the fifth inning with Gross’ second sacrifice fly.

Milton stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the fifth, and Central stranded its potential insurance run in the top of the seventh to keep the score at 3-1.

Ryan’s impressive night came to an end in the bottom of the seventh after he walked Carrico to open the inning.

Will Robbins relieved Ryan and earned two strikeouts and forced a flyout to secure the Bulldogs’ win.

Milton starter Cole Stupp pitched six innings with four hits, two earned runs and nine strikeouts. Sam Ellis threw one inning and allowed no hits and earned a strikeout. Tyler McLoughlin led the Eagles offensively batting 2-3 with a double and run scored.

Milton players and head coach Jeff Heusing talk on the mound. Despite Milton’s loss, they still hold a one-game lead over Forsyth Central and North Forsyth in the Region 5-AAAAAAA standings.

Despite the loss, Milton (15-4, 8-2) retained its lead over the Region 5-AAAAAAA standings heading into spring break. Central’s win and North Forsyth’s 13-7 win over West Forsyth Friday puts the Bulldogs (11-6, 7-3) and Raiders (13-7, 7-3) a game behind the Eagles.

Following the break, each Region 5 squad will battle the other, with the top four earning playoff berths.

“It’ll get interesting here with the next five games,” McCollum said. “Three of us are bunched up, and any teams down below us can make a run.”

Playoff push begins for local 7-6A baseball teams

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Region 7-AAAAAA baseball has produced downto-the-wire races for playoff berths the past two years, and with the final stretch of the regular season beginning next week, it appears this season will be no different.

Spring break this week will provide each team the opportunity to refocus heading into the final five or six games remaining on their schedule, with the final night of the regular season slated for April 19.

“This region is so tough, and it’ll go down to the last week like it always does,” said Johns Creek head coach Billy Nicholson. “That’s what makes it fun.”

While Nicholson’s Gladiators are currently on the outside looking in at a playoff berth, they will enter the final stretch on a region win streak.

Austin Wainer threw a no-hitter March 27 in the Gladiators’ 4-0 win over Northview, and Johns Creek downed region leaders Cambridge 2-1 on March 28.

The two wins put the Gladiators in a position to vie for a playoff berth after the team has battled adversity during the season.

Due to a drainage issue on their field, Johns Creek had to play over a dozen of its opening games on the road. The field issue was compounded by the Gladiators’ returning just one starter to their

2018 position, and rain early in the season impacted their on-field practice time.

“This is a great group of kids and I am proud of our guys’ resiliency,” Nicholson said. “They never complained about it and just went to work.”

The Gladiators will face stiff competition in their final five region games, including contests against Alpharetta and Dunwoody.

Nicholson is confident that his team is improving and that they can hit their stride in the final stretch.

“We want to play our best baseball when we come back from the break,” Nicholson said. “If we get to play our brand of baseball, I like our shot.”

While the Gladiators look to break into the top-four teams to earn a playoff spot, Cambridge will hunker down to remain atop the standings and seek to dethrone Pope, the two-time defending

region champs.

“Obviously the first half of the season has gone well as far as region play,” Cambridge head coach Evan Tieles said.

“It’s been a good start to the first half, but we are nowhere near feeling comfortable. Every single one of our teams is loaded with talent and everyone can beat anyone. It always comes down to the wire.”

Tieles said it will be crucial for his squad to keep up the strong pitching they have showcased so far this season, from their starting rotation and two main relievers, Kenny Rosenbloom and Michael Polk.

“When you have five arms like that, it gives us guys we can rely on,” Tieles said.

The Cambridge coach said the pitching staff has allowed the Bears to secure wins, but they will need to step up their offensive play in the final push of the regular season.

The Bears are seeking their third appearance in the Class 6A playoffs and first region title in their three years since joining 7-AAAAAA, but Tieles said his squad will not get ahead of itself.

“The minute you look ahead you are going to find yourself in trouble,” he said. “We can’t worry about others, just focus on our game. If we take care of things the way we should, compete and come out with a few wins, there’s no reason a playoff berth shouldn’t happen.

But that’s the last thing on our minds.

Centennial will enter the final stretch of the regular season fourth in the standings, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over North Atlanta.

The Knights dropped three of four region games in the late half of March but earned a vital 13-2 win over North Atlanta March 29.

Under second-year head coach Matt McCarthy, the Knights will look to end their long absence from the postseason.

Centennial faces Johns Creek, Dunwoody Alpharetta, Pope and Northview to close out the regular season. Centennial went 4-1 against those teams in the first game of each series.

Alpharetta, region runner up in 2018, has been streaky in 7-AAAAAA play this season. The Raiders began their 7-AAAAAA campaign 3-0, including wins over Pope and Dunwoody, but then lost four straight. After downing North Atlanta 10-4 March 22, the Raiders dropped their second matchup with Dunwoody 3-2 after loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh.

The Raiders will look to get back on a winning streak beginning April 8 against Northview, the first of six games remaining on their region schedule.

At 3-7 in region play, Chattahoochee will need to continue its recent success to have a shot at finishing in the top four.

The Cougars have won three of their last four games in region play, including wins over Alpharetta, Northview and Centennial.

Northview has just five region games remaining, and with a 2-7 record, the Titans are likely out of the playoff hunt.

Centennial lacrosse’s incredible play goes viral

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The talent of Centennial boys lacrosse was thrust into the national spotlight when a video of a sensational play was shared by many of the nation’s top sports outlets March 23-24.

During the Knights’ 22-6 win over Peachtree Ridge on March 23, Centennial won a faceoff, completed three behind-the-back passes before scoring a goal on a behind-the-back shot.

Senior Caleb Saad won a faceoff and ran about 20 yards down the middle of the field before connecting with Max Lucas near the restraining line with a behind-the-back pass. Lucas then quickly dished a behind-the-back pass to freshman Coleman Smith, who passed behind his back and across the goalmouth to a waiting Ryan Siracusa.

Siracusa took the pass, stepped back and scored on the short side, sneaking his behind-the-back shot just inside the right post.

The entire sequence took just eight seconds.

Saad shared a video of the goal on Twitter, and it soon caught the attention of sports fans across the nation.

The clip gained thousands of “likes” on social media outlets and was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays of March 23 and shared by other national sports outlets including Sports Illustrated, NBC Sports and Barstool Sports.

“I’ve never been a part of something that’s gone viral in 30 minutes,” Centennial head coach Bryan Wallace laughed. “It’s not something that was planned, but in terms of stick work, we encourage creativity to match the free flow of the game.”

Wallace said he was surprised at just how much recognition the goal received in a short amount of time.

“Caleb asked me if he could post it, and later I saw some messages from guys from ESPN, but I didn’t think it was going to take off the way it did,” he said. “But the kids were really excited about it and had some fun with it.”

Even without some of last year’s standouts, including all-time Georgia points leader Nicky Solomon, the video shows the Knights are not wanting for talent in 2019. As of March 26, the Knights were 9-2 overall and 4-0 in area play.

said. “But we have a lot of guys who will go on to play in college and some blue-collar guys as well. We have a 12-member senior class who has done a great job to represent Centennial and some sophomores who have really stepped up.”

The Knights have a challenging non-area schedule with matchups against Lassiter, Buford and Lambert, which has downed the Knights in the semifinals of the state playoffs the last two seasons. Wallace said while those games are crucial to gaining experience against strong programs, the Knights’ new area also provides stiffer competition.

Centennial now faces Johns Creek, Northview, Duluth and Peachtree Ridge in Area 1.

“This area puts us in a situation where we have had a lot more meaningful games earlier in the season, and we’re stronger for it and more battletested,” Wallace said. “We continue to grind out wins against really good teams.”

And the video of their incredible goal against Peachtree Ridge could ensure they get each opponent’s best game.

“We know it’s not going to help us win games, it may even put a target on our backs,” Wallace said. “It was great to get the notoriety, but our focus is still on competing.”

Johns Creek’s Wainer throws no-hitter

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek junior Austin Wainer has joined one of the most exclusive groups in all of sports —the no-hitter club. The right-hander threw a complete game no-hitter March 27 in the Gladiators’ 4-0 win over crosstown rivals Northview.

Wainer struck out 10 with three walks on 102 pitches in the seven-inning outing to complete one of sport’s most difficult accomplishments.

“The feeling was amazing,” Wainer said.

Entering the contest, the junior was simply focused on getting a crucial win for the Gladiators.

“I was definitely dialed in at the beginning of the game,” he said. “We had lost three straight and we knew we had to win some to get into the playoffs, and of course, that’s our ultimate goal. After coming out of warmups I just felt really good. I got out there on the mound and the adrenaline kicked in, and after that it was just smooth and controlled.”

As the outs continued to mount, Wainer said he was aware he was on pace to record a no-hitter.

“It was in my mind because I’ve gotten close to throwing a no-hitter or a perfect game so many times, and you start to realize it when it happens,” Wainer said. “But I told myself I’ve never thrown one anyway so just go out there and play ball.”

However, Wainer continued to force outs, and his prowess and control did not diminish throughout the game. He struck out the final five batters he faced,

throwing just 11 pitches to strike out the side in the top of the seventh to secure his no-hitter.

“The last inning was probably the best,” Wainer said. “I just felt really confident.”

Wainer was quick to credit his teammates for backing him during the contest, especially given the difficulties of playing an early evening game at Johns Creek. The sun is often directly behind the plate during games in the spring and creates difficulties locating balls hit up the middle areas of the field.

But Wainer had faith in the defense behind him.

“For me to win the game for us, I needed to know I could trust them,” he said. “And it helped me with my confidence knowing they would back me up.”

As his teammates rushed him following his no-hitter, Wainer was also thankful for the comradery among the Gladiators. It is his first season with Johns Creek after his family moved to the area from New York.

“It is tough coming to a new school, but these guys have really been brothers to me,” Wainer said. “Every game has been fun, and they have really helped me through this process. They were just as happy as I was to see me throw a no-hitter, and that puts a good feeling in your head when you know that.”

The right-hander will look to continue the Gladiators’ push for the postseason.

“It’s a great accomplishment, and I have taken some time to celebrate, but it is something to move past, and now my focus is on the team,” Wainer said.

Local athletes shine at county track and field tourney

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Track and field athletes from North Fulton schools earned county titles March 23 and 27 at Roswell High School in the Fulton County Championships. The second day of the meet was scheduled for March 25 but was delayed due to weather.

Athletes from Cambridge, Chattahoochee, Northview, Johns Creek, Milton, Alpharetta, Roswell and Centennial competed in the championships.

Boys The Milton boys earned their second straight Fulton County team championship compiling 90 points, 18 points ahead of Chattahoochee in second.

Alpharetta finished a single point behind Hooch, with Roswell in seventh and Cambridge in eighth. Northview and Johns Creek tied for ninth with Centennial in 14th.

Milton’s boys 4x100-meter relay team captured the Fulton title and finished one-tenth of a second ahead of the squad from Langston Hughes.

Milton added to its points total with a first-place finish from Demaire Taylor in the boys 100-meter dash and the 200-meter event.

Alpharetta’s Robbie Ruppel captured his second straight Fulton County championship in the 400-meters, besting the field by nearly three-fourths of a second.

Fellow Raider CJ McFerrin earned a podium finish by placing third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Chattahoochee’s Kyle Coleman took the top spot in the boys 800-meters

Alpharetta’s Jamal Ellis captured the boys discus title with Roswell’s Zach Peterson and Zach Johnson of Chattahoochee in fourth and fifth. Peterson placed first in the boys shot put ahead of Ellis in second.

Northview’s Liban Ismael placed first in the high jump and Milton’s Matthew Mazzacano placed first in the pole vault clearing 14 feet, six inches.

Jonathan Baker won overall in the boys triple jump and boys long jump.

Girls Johns Creek was the top local school in team scores placing fifth ahead of Cambridge, Milton, Chattahoochee and Alpharetta. Roswell was 10th, Northview 11th and Centennial 14th.

Alpharetta’s Jasmine Jackson earned a Fulton County title in the 300-meter

hurdles, besting Kayla Tolbert of North Springs by seven-hundredths of a second.

Cambridge’s Ashley Sechrest bested the 1600-meter girls field by over two seconds to take the Fulton County title.

Her time of 5:09.79 was a meet record.

Milton’s Nyah Hernandez placed third with Clarissa Beck of Cambridge in fifth.

Skye Chambers placed second in the 400-meter with Alpharetta’s Garielle Cross in fourth.

Johns Creek’s Madelyn Horne earned two trips to the top of the podium taking the girls shot put (36-07 feet) and discus (144-10 feet). Milton’s Amanda Sanchez placed second in both events.

Wanted man arrested following traffic stop ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man wanted on a warrant in Clayton County March 18 after he was identified during a traffic stop. Officers patrolling on Ga. 120 at Northwinds Parkway pulled over a driver after they saw one of the rear taillights on his car was out.

While talking with the driver, police received notification that he had a warrant for his arrest from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

Police discover drugs during traffic stop ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man March 20 after they found more than a pound of marijuana in his car.

Police pulled a car over that morning when they saw it drive in the emergency lane on Ga. 400 southbound.

While talking to the driver, officers reported they could smell marijuana and were alerted that the man had an active warrant from the Villa Rica Police Department. The man had $2,600 in cash in his front pocket, and officers found 1.6 pounds of marijuana in the car.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Barado Jones of Atlanta, was arrested for driving in the emergency lane, no license, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.
