MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating the forgery of several checks using Birmingham United Methodist Church’s information.

A church representative met with police Feb. 5 after they discovered several checks they had not issued had been changed and deposited.

ber for his Christmas services. Two months later, man’s bank contacted the church asking if they had issued a second check for $1,200 to the man.

Church representatives then checked their bank account and found two more fraudulent checks for over $2,000 total.

All three checks were deposited electronically.

Mailbox destroyed while family at church

MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported Feb. 6 that her identity had been stolen and used to fraudulently purchase hundreds of dollars’ worth of merchandise.

The victim said that last August, she signed up for a Von Maur store credit card using her Social Security number.

Four months later, the woman received a call that a man was trying to add himself to her account using her Social Security number. She then began receiving bills from her already established department store accounts with fraudulent charges.

Someone also attempted to open a credit card account using her information.

The woman notified the credit bureaus and her bank about the fraud before contacting police.

MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating damage to a mailbox on Manor Bridge Drive.

On Feb. 8, the owners of the mailbox went to church in the evening and returned about 90 minutes later.

The owners had received a call from a neighbor who saw a truck hit their mailbox. The driver of the truck got out for a few minutes to look at the mailbox and then left, the neighbor said.

The neighbor had a photo of the truck that was turned over to police.

The estimated cost of replacing the mailbox is $750.

Man’s account hacked, used to buy gift cards MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man contacted police Feb. 7 after he discovered that someone had hacked his bank account and used it to purchase $300 in gift cards.

The man said he realized something was wrong when his personal information had been changed on his bank account. He contacted his bank and

Man scams retailer out of $200 in cash MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 31 theft by deception from the Target on Ga. 9.

On Feb. 5, police met with the asset protection lead, who said they had seen a man place several items into a cart on Jan. 31 and, without paying, return them using a receipt from another store.

The man received over $200 in cash from the transaction.

Police obtained a warrant for the man’s arrest.

Woman nearly scammed by fraudulent job posting ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported she had almost been scammed after she received a fraudulent check in the mail.

On Jan. 20, the woman replied to a job posting on Indeed.com that appeared to be legitimate. After sending her resume and exchanging several emails with the scammer, the woman accepted the job.

Days later, the woman became suspicious of the interaction and contacted the business directly. She learned that it was a fraudulent posting.

On Jan. 31, the woman received a $2,000 check in the mail from the scammer.

Police confirmed that it was fraudulent.

Electronics stolen from burglarized car ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 2 car burglary at the Marriott Alpharetta on Windward Parkway.

The owner said he had parked his car at about 11 a.m. When he returned six hours later, he saw his car’s rear passenger window was broken.

Several items were missing, including a computer, chargers and a mouse. There were no security cameras in the area.

City to add to Mark Law Arboretum at Arbor Day ceremony this week

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton will debut the second portion of the Mark Law Arboretum at Bell Memorial Park this week as a part of the city’s Arbor Day celebration. The city will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

Feb. 21 to plant a white oak tree in honor of former City Arborist Mark Law, who passed away last year. The city will also introduce new signage and planted trees in the second wing of the arboretum.

The white oak to be planted was donated by the Georgia Tree Council nonprofit in honor of Law, who spent 13 years as the city’s arborist. Law envisioned an arboretum, a site which showcases and gives information on various species of trees, in Milton. Law died last February just two weeks after the city cut the ribbon on the Bell Memorial Park arboretum and named it in Law’s honor last Arbor Day. City Arborist Sandra Dewitt said last year’s event was the most well-attended Milton Arbor Day celebration in the city’s history.

“Well over 100 people came to the event, which just goes to show how much Mark was respected in the community,” Dewitt said.

New trees recently planted at the arboretum will also be introduced with informative signs outlining the species.

The new trees include a Start Magnolia, Smoketree and Yellowwood. New signs

will also outline existing species at the arboretum, including Eastern Redbud, Red Maple, Overcup Oak, Eastern Redcedar, Sugar Maple and Southern Magnolia.

The signs include each tree’s common name, genus, species, cultivation origin, mature height and mature canopy spread.

City Councilman Peyton Jamison, Law’s widow, Christina, Conservation Projects Manager Teresa Stickels and Dewitt will also speak at the event.

“The city is excited to be able to continue the legacy of the arboretum that Mark has left for us,” Stickels said. “We are honored keep his vision going for today and future generations.”

The city will also hand out flowering dogwood seedlings with planting instructions to those in attendance.

Under Law’s direction, Milton earned its first Tree City USA designation in 2009 and has received the distinction every year since. Earlier this month, Milton received its 11th consecutive annual award given by the Arbor Day

Foundation. The award recognizes cities that have a municipal tree department, a tree ordinance, a community forestry budget of at least $2 per resident and an observance of Arbor Day. Milton has been working to revamp its tree ordinance for several years.

Originally, the city’s ordinance measured tree coverage based on the size of a tree’s trunk, but a new ordinance, one that fits into a growing trend among municipalities, is to use the canopy coverage of fully mature trees to measure a city’s tree density.

Milton put the canopy coverage regulations into place in February, 2018.

However, the city backtracked weeks later and put the canopy coverage regulations back under its microscope. For the last two years, Milton officials have tuned the rules, and an update could soon be approved by the City Council.

In the meantime, the city has allowed developers to either use the canopy coverage regulations passed in 2018 or its previous ordinance basing coverage on trunk size.

Rock for Rescues will not return to Milton this spring Popular animal benefit will move to Woodstock

nize the event, and despite its proximity to City Hall, it did not take place on city property. Milton did not weigh in on the decision to not hold the event in Milton, rather, the determination was made by the Rock for Rescues organization.

The festival has been moved to downtown Woodstock and will take place April 25 at the Northside-Cherokee Amphitheater. This years’ event will still benefit some local organizations, including Milton’s Special Equestrians of Georgia.

Funds will also be raised for Canine Cellmates, a group partnering rescue dogs with Fulton County jail inmates for training and other purposes, Forsyth County’s FurKids animal rescue, the Atlanta Wildlife Animal Rescue Effort and the Georgia House Rabbit Society.

“We are excited for this year’s festival, and especially how it will help us to continue helping animals in need,” said Ray Baker, the head of the Vox Artium Foundation, which organizes the event. “And while we won’t be in Milton in April, we look forward to working with city staff and residents to raise awareness, hold events and make a difference.”

The city said it will continue to partner with the organization for educational or fundraising events in Milton. Rock for

Rescues has also said the group could potentially return to Milton to hold future festivals.

The Rock for Rescues Festival made its Milton debut in 2018, and the city said around 4,000 people were in attendance for the day-long event. The festival was expanded last year with a larger music lineup, extended concert time period, more dedicated space in downtown Crabapple to the event and VIP ticket packages.

Annual Meals with Meaning to benefit nonprofit fighting homelessness

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Local residents will get a chance to enjoy a family-style dinner with live music, all for a good cause.

On Thursday, March 12, Family Promise of North Fulton/DeKalb, a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, will hold its Meals with Meaning dinner starting at 6 p.m. at Roswell Historic Cottage, 972 Alpharetta St. All proceeds will go toward supporting the nonprofit’s mission and will include a testimony from a recently graduated family.

“Meals with Meaning started with a board member’s vision of holding a family style dinner in her home for her friends,” said Executive Director Andrea Brantley. “Rather than spending money going out to dinner, her friends would enjoy her home-cooked meal and for their appreciation would donate to her favorite charity Family Promise NFD. We

decided shortly after that we could make Meals with Meaning a larger event along the same lines and serve a family-style meal to a larger audience.”

Family Promise of North Fulton/ DeKalb provides temporary assistance and case management for about 35 homeless people, or 10 homeless families, annually through a rotational shelter program. Their average length of stay is about 90 days or until stabilization.

Each day, however, the nonprofit responds to about 50 calls and emails and provides referrals, resources and case management to those in need.

While homelessness seems out of character with the perception of areas like Roswell and Alpharetta, it exists, Brantley said.

Meals with Meaning can help bring more attention to the issue, she added.

“We will have the opportunity to educate our audience on the invisible

neighbors in our community and how they can help,” Brantley said.

Last year’s event, the nonprofit’s first, featured keynote speaker Renee Montgomery from Atlanta Dream as well as a single dad and son who spoke about their history with homelessness.

The event has since become Family Promise of North Fulton/DeKalb’s annual fundraiser.

This year, Meals with Meaning will start with light appetizers and cocktails along with live music from Captain and the Kid, followed by a family-style dinner with beer and wine. Organizers will show a video from the past year during the festivities along with testimony from a graduated family.

Cambridge program helps students transition MILTON, Ga. — Three Cambridge High School students are running a program to help transition middle school students to high school and develop vital life skills.

The Skills of Adolescence program was spearheaded by Cambridge students and SkillsUSA members Phillip-Michael Collins, Michael Hudson and Chesney Zillweger, and has grown from a small group to an official connections class at Hopewell Middle School.

In December 2018, Collins approached Hopewell Middle Administration with a proposal for a club of 20 members that would take eighth grade students and promote leadership qualities and prepare students for issues they may face during high school.

“We called [the issues] the seven dream killers, because these issues threaten every adolescent’s dream for the future,” Collins said.

Collins was made aware of the significance of the seven issues after working with award-winning author Kit Cummings, he said.

“Kit left an incredible impact on me and gave me the confidence to believe I could be the one that make a difference in my community,” Collins said.

The instruction also includes the framework for the SkillsUSA program.

Collins said the program’s focus on personal, workplace and technical skills enables students to become world-class workers, leaders and citizens.

The three Cambridge students also incorporated a curriculum created with Hopewell teacher Geri Southall, Collins’ former teacher. Collins said Southhall strongly advocated for the class, and it was made possible by her efforts.

Since then, the group has swelled

from 20 members to becoming an official connections class with over 100 students.

Collins, Hudson and Zillweger teach the class during late-start days at Cambridge.

“We were given a golden opportunity,” Collins said. “The faith that Hopewell put in us was extraordinary, and we knew exactly what we wanted to do with it. We finally realized it wasn’t enough to just take bad habits away, we needed to introduce fresh habits to replace the old.”

Older adults thrive in Seniors Enriched Living

Roswell nonprofit provides programs for the active mind

By HATCHER HURD For The Herald ROSWELL, Ga. – Despite serving North Fulton’s active older adults for more than 30 years with an endless variety of enrichment classes and activities, Seniors Enriched Living is still an unknown quantity for many residents 55 and older.

“That’s because we have the fastest growing population of senior citizens [per capita] in the nation,” said SEL Executive Director Rob Albertson, a doctor of educational leadership. “And while we have a far-ranging number of topics every quarter, by far the biggest thing SEL accomplishes is to provide these older adults the chance to join a community.

“It’s a community of like-minded adults who are still knowledge seekers, still curious about the world around them and eager to make new friends.”

Albertson notes that retirees are coming in ever greater numbers drawn to North Fulton for its great climate, affordable living space — and closer proximity to their grandchildren.

“What our seniors find here is a new community with people their own age, and who are also life learners — people who still have a curiosity over a wide range of subjects,” Albertson said.

For instance, a current seminar about the NASA space program is conducted by a former NASA executive. A seminar on “The Great Decisions of the 20th Century” next door has its discussion led by a former member of the U.S. State Department.

Often the seminars are led by members who are sharing knowledge gleaned from their far-flung careers or their own experiences gleaned from personal study.

Members of classes are encouraged to participate and ask questions.

Classes are as varied as the interests of the volunteers who teach them. A sampling of courses this quarter include: “Unprotected: Broken Promises in Georgia’s Healthcare Industry,” led by the AJC reporter who wrote the investigative series.

“Astronomy 101,” a study of how ancient cultures depended on the stars and relied on the sky as a reliable clock for survival.

“The Venezuelan Situation,” as told

In short, there is no “typical” SEL seminar.

“SEL provides a way for people from all over the country who have settled here to find community, friendship and a way to continue to explore the world around them in diverse way,” Albertson said.

SEL got its start from an idea of Roswell United Methodist Church Senior Minister the Rev. Malone Dodson back in 1989. Even then, he saw the need and the benefit of continuing education courses for North Fulton’s older adults.

The first thing Dodson did was to recruit some civic minded “co-conspirators” to organize and develop a program for retired adults — his Assistant Pastor John Wolf, Mary Drake (fondly remembered for her help in founding North Fulton Community Charities), and community leader Marion Hicks. Also helping with the organizational plan were church members Tom Nash and Mel Smiley.

Smiley brought his experience organizing a similar program for seniors called North Atlanta Senior Services.

It began modestly with classes in a house owned by the church. Other local churches joined in providing space on a rotating basis. However, SEL over the years became a victim of its own success as facilities strained to keep up.

But with completion of the Dodson Youth Center on the RUMC campus, SEL has a permanent home on the second floor for year-round classes with the help of Roswell Presbyterian Church just down the street providing space for

art classes.

In 1996, Dick Higgins was hired as the group’s first executive director. By 2013, SEL had transitioned into a separate independent nonprofit organization with its own board of directors and some 800 people on membership rolls.

“What we have is a community of lifelong learners,” Albertson said.

Founding volunteer Tom Nash claims to be retired but he is always taking classes at SEL. He said he and Mel Smiley thought what North Atlanta Senior Services was doing inside the perimeter would be a great thing in this community.

“The thing about taking an idea to Rev. Dodson is he immediately assumes you are a volunteer. And not many people can say no to him,” Nash said.

Thus in February 1990, SEL opened its doors. In 1996, Dick Higgins became the first paid executive director. He was an original attendee and instructor and helped grow SEL until he retired — but not from teaching SEL seminars.

“Once SEL gets in your blood, it doesn’t wash off,” Nash said. “Most of us wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves without SEL in our lives.”

Former SEL board members Birdel Jackson, Sue McCloskey and Phyllis Clayton sat down to talk about their experiences as well. Jackson, a professional engineer who now serves as president of the Jackson-Davis Foundation, said he thrives on the “intellectual stimulation” SEL provides.

“I came to SEL out of curiosity. I liked that the classes are interactive — discussion is usually sought out. And I wanted to be involved because I like people,” Jackson said. “Later I was asked to

teach and that was fun, too.”

That is typical, as SEL members are encouraged to become teachers as well.

Jackson noted people have moved into the North Fulton area from all over the country, and each SEL member brings a wealth of unique and interesting experiences that they are encouraged to share.

McCluskey said she came to SEL after she lost her husband and her mother in the same month in 2009. At SEL she found community, friendship and a renewed interest in learning.

“I had lived in Roswell for 30 years and never heard of it,” she said.

The saddest part, she added, is that her husband was a history teacher and would have loved SEL. “I haven’t missed a session since that first one I attended,” McCluskey said. “I always loved school when I was young.

So now I get up and go to school and I have never been disappointed.”

Clayton echoed those sentiments. She said it is always a journey of exploration.

She took a seminar called “The History of Science Fiction” taught by a Lutheran minister, the Rev. Kevin Martin.

“He talked about the symbolism one finds in their stories,” Clayton said. “The class showed me a depth of meaning in those stories I had never thought about.”

Nash was asked to look back over the last 30 years of SEL and reveal its “secret of success.”

“SEL fills a need. It’s the need for seniors to stay active and involved,” Nash said. “You can take a little or a lot from SEL. But everyone takes away from it something they want. “It’s all about being part of a community. Simple really.”

Simple enough when committed people come together to make it happen.

the dress code. I was not planning on wearing the bright blue ones with the hole in the crotch, mind you. I am holding on to those for the purpose of embarrassing my daughter when I pick her up from school some years down the road. No, I planned on sporting a nice, new pair that were dark, fit well and, in the dimly lit room where the party was to take place, could not be told apart from the finest of dress slacks from 10 paces.

I am fairly certain the only stipulations of this company’s everyday dress code state that genitals must be covered, most of the time, anyway. So I was rather surprised that the company had outlawed denim from its party like its cotton fibers would usher in the actual Ebola virus.

Maybe it is because I am a sports journalist, the least well-dressed in a profession not exactly known for being the epitome of fashion, but I see nothing wrong with donning a nice pair of denim pants in any situation.

But it seems that opinion is still a bit radical for those who have a deeply seeded belief that jeans are far too low class to be worn at certain events or in general office culture.

Perhaps it is the blue-collar background of blue jeans that causes denim discrimination. Some people scoff at the notion of wearing jeans to a Christian church service, as if God will smite those who do not don the finest of fabrics around their legs while in his house.

And show up to a country club in jeans?

Wearing the same thing a farmer wears to work at this fine Bushwood establishment? A question Ted Knight as Judge Elihu Smails would likely ask.

I have experience in the latter situation where I was barred from trying out for my high school golf team. I went to school that day wearing denim, and being an ill-prepared freshman, I left my “country club suitable” pants at home.

Not having the time to go home and retrieve them before the tryout started, I donned my jeans and approached the coach to tell him why I was wearing such “ghastly” pants at a golf club. My explanation fell on deaf ears, and I was barred from making the team for my pants, not for the real reason I should have not made the team — I am, and have always been, a terrible golfer.

But I dream of day where a man is judged not for the fabric of his pants, but for the content of his character.

We must break the belief that denim is somehow inferior to slacks, dress pants and other means of covering our legs.

It is also imperative that we break the stigma that jeans are only for those with blue collars, and wearing them outside of such endeavors is worthy of a scoff.

We also must realize that denim is within the means of almost all, because not everyone can afford a silk suit.

It is for all these reasons I believe we must end this denim discrimination! And maybe for the fact I wanted to wear jeans to the aforementioned party because I have put on weight and all my dress pants are a bit tight now…

The Scouts who passed their Board of Review on Jan. 30 at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church are: Cade Fowler, of Troop 431, was sponsored by Roswell United Methodist Church. He designed and constructed an informational kiosk and two bike racks for Haw Creek Park.

Benjamin Pipitone, of Troop 431, was sponsored by Roswell United Methodist Church. He designed and constructed two picnic tables for Mountain Park Elementary School.

Lincoln Nelson, of Troop 7747, was sponsored by Fowler Park Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He designed and constructed a 46-foot fence to cover the garbage cans and dumpster at The Place of Forsyth.

Charities group offers free tax preparation services

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — As tax season rolls around, North Fulton Community Charities is again looking to smooth out the hassle for local families.

North Fulton Community Charities is now offering free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance with a team of IRS trained and certified volunteers for area residents. The service is intended for moderate to low income individuals to help with basic tax returns.

“The reason we do this is to make sure folks understand what they are eligible for, to avoid scams and to avoid the refund loans that several places will trap people into,” said Director of Programs Eden Purdy. “This program is very widely respected nationwide.”

Each year, North Fulton Community Charities sees several people who fall for scams or are taken advantage of when they are charged enormous fees for such services or have their personal information stolen by illegitimate tax preparers, Purdy said.

The VITA program, which is held in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and United Way, is one way residents can avoid such pitfalls.

Another big advantage of the program is that it can also save time and money, as the average tax return costs about $200, Purdy said.

“It is saving you money, but also, the way that we file, through e-file, your refund is deposited directly into your bank account,” she said. “So, the refunds are processed much faster.”

Last year, North Fulton Community Charities helped over 400 people through VITA. This year, the number is expected to grow to about 450-500 people.

Necessary information In order to take advantage of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance services, interested individuals must bring specific documentation and information with them, including: • A picture ID • Social Security cards, a copy of the cards or a Social Security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration • The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number letter • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN • Birth dates • Wage and earning statement forms from all employers • Interest and dividend statements from banks • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit, such as a blank check A full list of required information is available online at nfcchelp.org.

North Fulton Community Charities/Special

IRS trained volunteers can help residents file basic tax returns for free through April 14 thanks to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offered by North Fulton Community Charities in partnership with the IRS and United Way. That increase in demand could indicate that it’s getting harder for people to live and work in the local community, Purdy said.

“Even though we have a thriving economy and North Fulton is a very affluent area to live in, there are a lot of folks that we see every day that are struggling just to

live in this area,” she said. “We are seeing rent going up, and we are seeing wages stagnant… It only takes a car to break down or for the main provider to get sick for someone to start losing their income and to get into financial trouble when you live in North Fulton, especially those who are living paycheck to paycheck.”

North Fulton Community Charities, located at 1125 Elkins Road in Roswell, will offer the VITA program MondaysFridays and some Saturdays through April 14. Appointments are required during weekdays. Walk-ins and appointments are available some Saturdays.

Assistance is available both in English and Spanish.

Don’t like the weather? It will change Many years ago and right out of college I worked for a good ol’ boy who owned a successful home remodeling company. We’d get to the job site on a blustery morning, the kind where the wind Geoff smith feels like tiny icicles Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com stabbing through your clothes, knowing that we were outside all day. Before we could say anything, he’d say “Don’t like the weather? Stick around ’cause it’s gonna change.”

He didn’t have a lot of patience for me back then, but I like to think that at least I amused him.

Another one of my favorite sayings I stole from him came from when we were about to start the demolition on a 150year old house in Atlanta. The interior walls were horsehair plaster over old wooden slats.

As we stood there ready to get started, I was pontificating about any possible pipe or electrical wire that could be hidden in the wall that he didn’t already think of. I pointed out the location of the bathrooms, kitchens, electrical boxes and explained scenarios where those things could be connected via a pathway through that wall. After standing there with a sledgehammer in his hand and watching me go on, he finally shoved it at me and said “Boy, you about to find out.”

And I did. Quickly.

With that said, I’ll get to it. The weather here in Georgia is quite insane, especially this time of year. The changes are mostly due to the jet stream sliding north and south of us. When it’s to our south, it’s cold because we are feeling the air coming down from Canada. When it is north of us, it’s warm because we are feeling the air coming up from the Gulf.

That’s why a couple weeks ago we went from a beautiful spring day with

a high of 72 degrees on Thursday, to a high of 42 degrees with snow on Saturday, back up to 70 degrees the next Tuesday.

That is a huge shift, but do you know what the weather was for that same time period in Chicago? It was a high of 32 degrees on Thursday, 30 degrees on Saturday and 35 degrees Tuesday. As I’m writing this, it is 0 degrees in Chicago and “feels” like -15 degrees. No wonder I have so many friends who moved from there to here. I’ve been there in the summer, and it is a truly wonderful city. It occurs to me that the winters must be truly awful to push people away from there.

My Chicago friends laugh when they see us natives freak out over the first hint of snow. But for us, for our children, we know snow here is fleeting.

I was at a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby when the snow began to fall last week.

A dedicated group of dads had worked hard with their sons to carve a small car out of a block of wood and were eager to see how their car competed against the others. An even more dedicated smaller group of dads had worked the night before setting up the track in the Queen of Angles gym. But once those fluffy white flakes started falling and accumulating, we had no chance. It could have been full-sized drag racing with Guardians of the Galaxy superheroes driving and there still would have been no possibility of keeping the young scouts inside.

The snow did accumulate. Snowmen and snowwomen were made. Sledding

occurred. And by 4 p.m., the roads were clear.

Here in Atlanta, we are admired for the success of our business community. We grow more jobs every year than almost every other major metropolitan city. We talk about the work done at the ports, on growing our logistics, fintech, data-centers and auto industries. We talk about the genius in laying fiber-optic cables all over the place and making the climate here business-friendly. But I will tell you that, in secret, our top economic development experts will tell you that our greatest asset is our weather.

While we may be famous for shutting down during snow days, those days are far and few between. We don’t have hurricanes or earthquakes. We get a little of every season, and for the most part, our businesses stay open.

So enjoy those short bursts of spring and fall. Because they don’t last long here in Georgia. The weather will always change.

Include a to-do list as part of routine in your workday Are you getting all your tasks and activities completed each day?

Other tasks take less time to complete and when completed, can free up your time to focus on more important activities. Check off the things you complete and how long it took. This will be helpful for planning recurring tasks.

You should also consider automating this process. There are hundreds of computer and mobile applications that can streamline this process and make it even more productive for you.

Maintaining and managing your to-do list is a key to working more efficiently every day.

Eagles shake state tourney woes with rout over Central Gwinnett

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton boys basketball cruised past Central Gwinnett in the first round of the 7A state tournament, earning the program its first playoff win since the 2015-16 season.

The Eagles have made the playoffs each of the past five seasons but have only made it past the first round once during that span. Despite the success the Eagles have seen under head coach Allen Whitehart, their Valentine’s Day win over Central Gwinnett marks his first playoff win in three years at Milton.

“It’s a monkey off your back,” Whitehart said. “I’ve got knocked out in the first round the past two years, so it was on the back of my mind. Tonight was one of those nervous ones where you really want to get a win.”

Central Gwinnett, the No. 4 seed from Region 7, came out swinging in the first quarter. The Black Knights’ athleticism presented the Eagles with a challenge right out of the gates, but the Eagles stood their ground to lead 19-12 after one quarter.

“Playing teams from Gwinnett County is always tough,” Whitehart said. “It’s usually a physical game and they make it hard on you, and we knew that going into this game.”

The Black Knights continued to attack on both ends of the court in the second quarter, at one point tying the game at 25-25.

But from that point forward, Milton

took complete control of the game. The Eagles finished the half on a 14-1 run and went into halftime with a 13-point lead.

Freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle provided Milton with 17 points in the first half, including a spinning, 360-degree layup and a pair of three-pointers.

Region Player of the Year Bruce Thornton scored only two points in the first half and was forced to sit on the bench much longer than usual due to foul trouble. Thornton made sure to leave his mark on the game in the second half. The sophomore scored 10 points in the third quarter to help the Eagles extend their lead to 67-44.

With starters resting for the final minutes of the game, the Eagles had no troubles holding on to their lead in the fourth quarter.

Carlyle finished the night with a game-high 26 points, and Thornton ended up with 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Freshman center L.T. Overton added 13 points and nine rebounds.

“I thought a lot of people did really good things, but especially Kanaan,” Whitehart said. “He was phenomenal tonight. He’s one of the best freshmen in America. Bruce is one of the best sophomores in America...and it was on full display tonight.”

The Eagles will now move on to the Sweet Sixteen and host North Cobb, the No. 2 seed from Region 2. The Warriors (15-12, 7-3) won 55-30 over Tift County in the first round of the 7A playoffs.

Alpharetta names new head football coach Jason Kervin to lead program after long tenure with Alabama juggernaut Hoover

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta football will enter a new era in 2020 with the school recently announcing Jason Kervin will serve as the program’s fourth head coach. Kervin joins the Raiders after a 12-year stint with Alabama powerhouse Hoover High School, where he led the Bucs to six state championships and a national title. He served as Hoover’s offensive coordinator the KERVIN past five seasons.

Kervin said he was drawn to take his first head coaching position in Alpharetta because of the school’s community.

“Alpharetta has a lot to offer from the community, the school and football,” Kervin said.

The key draw, he said, is the education aspect of the school because he has four children.

“What really made me decide Alpharetta was the place for me was the commitment from Principal Shannon

Kersey, athletic director Dustin Rennspies, the committee, and everyone in the interview really sold me on their commitment to seeing Alpharetta football be able to reach the heights of what they have been to do in other areas,” he said. “They want to create and build something special.”

Kervin describes himself as a bit of “player’s coach,” and that he is intense and fairly hard-nosed. He will bring an emphasis on work-ethic, discipline and sense of family to the program, he said.

“We are going to work hard, get after it and compete, but we are also going to have fun,” he said. “And players will be surrounded by people that challenge you, make you better, and you know you are a part of something special. I think we can have that balance there.”

Kervin said landing with Hoover was a dream job, and his stint at the school and its challenging football schedule should serve him well in his new role.

The Raiders will face a new measuring stick in his first season, with the school transitioning from Class 6A to Class 7A in the 2020 season. Alpharetta will join an updated Region 5-AAAAAAA that includes established 7A teams,

including Roswell, Etowah, Cherokee, Woodstock and rival Milton.

“That was one of the big draws for me, I want to play against the best,” Kervin said. “I know there are a few good schools locally and some established programs. We want to schedule the best and play the best. That’s the only way you as a program, as a coach and as a player can reach your full potential.”

Hoover ran a pro-style offense with multiple personnel groupings, shifts and motions typically led by a pocket passer with a balanced run game. Kervin expects to implement the same offense with the Raiders.

Kervin’s father was also a head football coach and spent his time with a small private school. He said seeing the adjustments small schools have to make with limited players and the contrast to his time with Hoover and its deep talent pool should benefit him in leading the Raiders.

He anticipates taking over all aspects of the program.

“I think teams tend to take on the personality of their head coach, so I’m looking forward to that,” he said. “I’m looking forward to people watching us play and see a hard-nosed, disciplined,

selfless team, and hopefully that will be a reflection of me. And hopefully I’ll be able to imprint my personality on all three phases of the game.”

He also wants to create a successful launching pad for his fellow coaches.

“One thing I’m excited about is to hire my staff and help them grow, help them be head coaches and coordinators and fulfill their dreams, just like [Hoover head coach Josh Niblett] did with me here,” he said. “When you have the opportunity to put people you love and care about in positions to grow their career and help their family, that’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Kervin begins his tenure with the school this week, and his family is set to join him at the end of the 2019-20 school year.

He will be Alpharetta’s fourth head coach since the program begin in 2004.

Bill Waters led the Raiders from 2004-08 ahead of a 5-year stint under the direction of Jason Dukes, who led the Raiders to their first two region titles.

Jacob Nichols led the program from 2014 to 2019, compiling a 46-22 record with two region titles, five playoff berths and the Raiders’ deepest playoff run in program history in 2017.

North Fulton athletes excel at swim and dive state championships Cambridge, Blessed Trinity girls win overall state titles

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — North Fulton swim and dive teams had standout performances at the 2020 GHSA swim and dive state championships Feb. 6-8.

Dozens of athletes earned state titles, the girls teams of Blessed Trinity and Cambridge won team titles, and North Fulton schools nearly swept the boys and girls podium in Class 6A. Alpharetta Alpharetta had an impressive performance at the state meet with the boys and girls teams placing second in Class 6A team scores behind two individual and one team state titles.

Alexandra Clark and Alicia Henry lead the girls squad. Clark notched a state title in the girls 100 fly and Henry bested the field in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Henry notched another state crown in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Audrie Uphues, Ally Metcalf and Lauren Hinton.

Hinton placed second in the 100yard freestyle and third in 50-yard event. Clark was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Hinton, Sarah Kate Wilson, Clark and Henry were state runner-up in the girls 400-yard medley relay.

The Alpharetta boys 400 medley relay team also placed second behind performances from Charles Lu, Nathan Jin, Jerry Wu and Phillip Kutznetsov.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lu, Jin, Liam Clark and Peter Meng notched a state runner-up finish, and Kuznetsov, Wu, Clarke and Thomas Xiao were third in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Raiders were well represented in the 200-yard freestyle with Lu placing fourth, Wu in sixth, Jack Casey in 7th and Meng in 10th.

Lu was third in 100 free, Xiao was

fifth in 100 breast and Jack placed fourth in the 500 free. Kuznetsov finished third in the 100 fly and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Blessed Trinity Blessed Trinity girls swim and dive captured its second state championship in three years by outscoring Chamblee by 17 points for the Class 4A-5A title.

The girls team ended the meet with a state title-clinching performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Rachel Saxon, Maggie Pokorny, Amelia Cooper and Grace Findlay teamed up to outpace the field by over two seconds to capture the championship in the event and clinch the state title.

Pokorny, Baker, Tessa Weidner and Lauren Presley earned fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and the BT 200-yard medley relay team earned seventh.

The Titans girls also had notable individual performances.

Grace Findlay placed fifth in the girls 200 freestyle ahead of Pokorny in sixth and Cooper in eight. Findlay also raced to seventh in the 100 free.

Saxon was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. Cooper placed third in the 500-yard free, Pokorny was eighth in the 100 fly and Katie and Loren Baker added top-15 finishes.

The BT boys placed seventh in team scores led by Daniel Batallion, who placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 500-yard event. Batallion joined Joseph Palmich, Patrick White and Nate Matthews to place fifth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Cambridge The Cambridge girls made history in capturing the Class 6A girls state championship, the first for the program.

The Bears held the lead over Centennial entering the final competition of the

night, and the girls 400-yard medley relay team of Sophie Brison, Jayla Brown, Claire Kerber and Abigail Grottle sealed the championship by pacing the field to win the event.

The same four racked up another state championship in the 200-yard medley relay.

Individually, Grottle bested the 200yard freestyle field by over 1.6 seconds and added another state title in the 500 free.

Brison also netted two individual state championships in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. Kerber and Brown each had top-5 finishes. Kerber was fourth in the 100 fly and Brown fifth in the 100 free.

In boys competition, Matthew Gaines led the Bears with a third-place finish in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 fly.

Chattahoochee Lilly Kasra earned the top finish for Chattahoochee at the state meet, finishing as runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle just 0.18 seconds off state title pace.

Kasra earned another podium by placing third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Kasra, Katie Wong, Danielle Urban and Seema Chavis placed fourth in the 200-yard medley relay and were eighth in the 400-yard event.

Wong placed third in the 200-yard individual medley and was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Denmark Denmark earned eight top-10 finishes at the meet and the girls and boys each earned top-15 placements in team scores in Class 4A-5A competition.

Natalie Gilson was fourth in the girls 50-yard freestyle and eight in the 100-yard event. Sarah Clark raced to eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Hanna McNamara was 10th in the girls 500 free.

Pinecrest Academy Pinecrest Academy earned five top-10 placements at the state meet.

Anthony Birozes finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle ahead of teammate Mason Carter in 12th, and Birozes recorded another top-10 with sixth the 100 free.

Birozes, Carter, Diego Perez and Brendan Spillane were third in the 200yard freestyle relay and fourth in the 400-yard event.

Perez placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

St. Francis St. Francis’ limited field of swimmers earned one top-10 at the state meet with Gia Pergolini racing to third in the girls 100-yard backstroke.

High-water lemonade Unless you’ve been living in your basement for the last few weeks, you may have noticed that it has rained…and rained…and rained.

There have been brief flashes of sun, but the picture that my mind STEVE HUDSON paints is one of delGet Outside Georgia, uges and monsoons. aa4bw@comcast.net Where does all that water go? A lot of it has gone into Lake Lanier. I heard this morning on the radio that the lake level is about four feet above full pool, and when you’re talking about a lake the size of Lanier, that translates into a lot of water.

Lanier, however, is just one of many things affected by all that precipitation. The trails are too wet for hiking, at least when I’ve been able to get out… the streams are too high for fishing… the boat ramps are all underwater…for the outdoor adventurer, it’s a list of woes that goes on and on. Poor, poor pitiful me, stuck inside, on the wrong side of

the window looking out and not in.

How sad. But before I let it get me down, I’ll try to distract myself with another question instead: Where does all that water in the lake come from?

Well, Lanier gets a lot of its water from the Chattahoochee River. The river, in turn, gets its water from myriad smaller streams. And that’s where the idea of Chattahoochee Lemonade comes in.

If there’s one good thing about rain in the Chattahoochee watershed, it’s the fact that all that extra water does incredible things to waterfalls. Diehard waterfall fans know that, for there is no better time to visit and appreciate and photograph waterfalls that in the days following a period of sustained rain. In fact, I’ll bet that at this very minute there are untold numbers of waterfall aficionados making plans for some waterfall hiking just as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

I confess: I’m making exactly that kind of plan myself!

What Chattahoochee watershed waterfalls am I planning to visit? There are a lot to choose from, more than you or I, or both of us together, could visit in a week’s worth of Saturdays, but I’ve narrowed it down to a short list of four perpetual favorites.

Here they are, and happy waterfall watching!

Anna Ruby Falls, near Helen We’ve mentioned Anna Ruby Falls before, and the chance to see it after lots of

rain is not something to be missed. Anna Ruby is actually two waterfalls sitting side by side (a 50-foot falls on York Creek and a second 150-foot falls on Curtis Creek), and they’re easily accessed via a family-friendly paved interpretive trail at the Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area near Helen. You can get to this site via Ga. 356 and Smith Creek Road. Just follow the signs. A small admission charge gives you access to this area, and the roughly half-mile trail to the falls begins to the left of the visitor center.

Dukes Creek Falls, near Helen Dukes Creek Falls awaits you at the end of a moderately challenging, but definitely do-able, hike (about 1 mile in and another mile out). It’s accessible off Ga. 348, which turns west from Ga. 75A near Smithgall Woods State Park. The parking area for the falls (it’s marked by a sign, and there’s a small parking fee) is on the left a little ways down 348. From the parking area, you’ll descend to the main trail, where you’ll turn left and begin the long descent to the falls. The star here is actually a 150-foot waterfall on Davis Creek, a major tributary to Dukes Creek, but just to its right you’ll also see a set of cascades on Dukes Creek itself.

Large wooden viewing platforms provide spectacular (and safe) views. Sure, the hike back will be uphill. But that’s a small price to pay to see this falls at its prime.

Amicalola Falls, near Dawsonville Another must-see, rainy-season waterfall is Amicalola Falls in Amicalola State Park near Dawsonville. With a height of 729 feet, it’s absolutely unforgettable. There are viewing areas at the top of the falls as well as at the bottom, but you won’t see much from the top. The view from the bottom is the one you want, though fully appreciating it requires you to complete the challenging hike (climbing many, many stairsteps in the process) which begins at the parking area and ends at viewing platforms near the base of the falls. Note that a daily or annual state parks parking pass is required.

Helton Creek Falls, near Blairsville Helton Creek Falls is actually a pair of waterfalls with a total drop of around 100 feet. These falls are accessible via the short (0.2-mile) and fairly easy Helton Creek Falls Trail. The trailhead is located off US 129 south of Blairsville.

From Blairsville, go south on 129 for just over 11 miles and then turn right onto Helton Creek Road. The turn will be just over a mile beyond the entrance to Vogel State Park. After making the turn, continue for about 2.2 miles to the small pullout parking area and trailhead on your right. The trail takes you to good vantage points for seeing both falls.

Warning: Never try to climb on the rocks around these falls! They are extremely slippery and offer a treacherous footing.

Roswell girls ousted from playoffs

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell girls basketball team ended its season Friday night dropping their first-round state tournament matchup with Pebblebrook, the No. 8 ranked team in Class 7A. With a tough draw in the first round, Roswell (17-12) head coach Antonio Wade was looking for his team to bring the fight to the Falcons (22-8), but he said they fell short.

“I don’t feel like we competed tonight to the best of our ability,” Wade said.

“I’m okay with a loss if we compete, but I don’t feel like we competed for 32 minutes tonight.”

Defensive play was another factor.

“We didn’t play defense, and we let them do everything we didn’t want them to do,” he said.

Roswell junior guard Makala Torrence, the Region 4-AAAAAAA Player of the Year, was off the mark for much of the first quarter but hit a few NBArange 3-pointers in the second. However, her eight points in the quarter was far from keeping up with the Falcons, who opened the period on a 10-3 run and outscored the Hornets 27-15 in the period to lead by 15 at the half.

The Falcons entered the game allowing just 41 points a contest, and their suffocating zone defense continued to force outside shots in the third quarter.

Pebblebrook opened its lead to 16 points entering the fourth, but Roswell still had life.

The Hornets went on a 7-0 run to start the period, and two free throws from Torrence cut Pebblebrook’s lead to single digits for the first time since midway through the second quarter.

However, the comeback bid soon fell apart with the Falcons limiting Roswell to just four points in the final five minutes of play.

Torrence led Roswell with 17 points, and sophomore forward Ella Boyle netted 13 points with seven rebounds.

Following the game, Wade said he used the loss as a lesson that his players must compete in all aspects of life. He also thanked the program’s three seniors — Jasmine Frierson, Makayla McNeil and Nickel State commit Kane Manley — for their time with the program on their final night with the Hornets.

While the ending to the campaign was bitter, Wade was still pleased with the team’s 2019-20 season, especially given their youth.

season, and we were the runner up in the region, getting to compete for a region championship two years in a row,” Wade said. The Hornets fell to Cherokee, which has won the last four region championships, in the 4-AAAAAAA title game Feb. 7.

“I had a lot of fun through the season,” Wade said. “We had some rough patches, but overall I’m happy with the year.”

Friday’s loss ended Wade’s third season at the helm, and he is hoping a more experienced squad returning next year can continue the Hornet’s rise as a team to beat in Class 7A. “For the most part it has been three good seasons, and I think the program can still ascend,” Wade said. “We just have to get better and get stronger, but I’m really happy with the program and the Roswell community for their support in my three years here.”

Boys: McEachern 78, Roswell 48 Roswell boys basketball fell to Region 3 champions McEachern, 78-48, on Saturday to end the Hornets’ season.

The Hornets were held to just two points in the first quarter and were outscored 45-29 in the second half.

Roswell failed to qualify for the state tournament by placing among the topfour teams in the Region 4-AAAAAAA tournament, however, the Hornets earned the Class 7A at-large bid to extend their streak of state tourney appearances to four years. The at-large bid is awarded to the team that accumulates the highest ranking — based on wins and strength of schedule — that does not earn an outright berth in the state tournament.

The challenge of our times

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor Boomers are not the generation who dumped tea into Boston Harbor, but they are the children of a whole nation of parents who grew victory gardens, Chadwick rationed gas and felt fully a part of the average citizen’s effort to avert totalitarianism during World War II. A different, unimaginable danger was on the horizon then. Everyone could see it coming and it rallied the nation.

Today, individually, we may not grasp the true pace of the problem of global climate change or what current science suggests could be the source of our salvation. This is a war of a different sort. It is clearly time to stop pretending this is someone else’s dilemma.

Sadly, many boomers seem indifferent.

It is also useless to waste time looking to blame those linked to this crisis. We need to find consensus in steps each one of us can make. Small changes, when collectively repeated, in the millions of times, will begin containing instead of

further expanding the threat.

Realistically, we must take into consideration our respect for the radical independence of our culture. To begin, ignorance needs to be discarded as we seek a clearly informed approach to make the necessary changes.

We are further encumbered by our naïve confidence of those in public service and the federal agencies charged to protect us. Those people and institutions have morphed to bend to the financial power of lobbies serving the very interests so toxic to people, places and the very atmosphere we breath. These are the companies who pay liberally for the “right” to pollute.

We — a vulnerable, largely uninformed public — are now sadly tasked with understanding what is best for us.

We must insist that resources be utilized to execute a logical science-based standard of action created in the public good. When that plan is in place, it will still require sacrifice from each of us as well as our support of the grassroots efforts needed to expand results.

If you really investigated the destructive facts of the science, you would identify the truth that our lives are in red dan-

ger. Consider the 88 people who died in lovely, peaceful, well-prepared Paradise, Calif. They died because of earth changes that cannot currently be properly anticipated or stopped. Ask yourself how Dubai experienced 21 inches of rainfall in one day in January when its average January rainfall hovers around .5 inches.

We are always asking: “Why are we (America) always the Earths policemen?”

When we successfully collaborated with 196 other countries to produce the Paris Accord, all of those nations were prepared to be held accountable for making the hard changes needed to clarify and arrest the progress of global warming.

America’s withdrawal from that accord was made without regard for the consequences....to you or to your children.

That action confirmed foundationless beliefs. This mistake has given less committed nations an exit strategy to delay or deny the obligations and regulatory actions that affect our very lives.

The demands of our own overcommitted lives need to be reevaluated for content. What do we do that matters?

For ourselves, for those we love, as citizens of this nation? Do you think of yourself as a citizen? Our forefathers

conceived and then created public education for children less fortunate than their own. The idea was that building equality was the basis of building a truly free country. We now have totally different responsibilities to protect the children of the next generation from the fear, and very real day-to-day danger, of a life incompatible with their planet.

Do you think any of the World War II era families asked “why me?” when asked to participate in a national drive to support freedom? To sacrifice? To make a special effort? To preserve limited resources? It was their duty, some as warriors on the front, and others at home.

In this war, what we do ‘”in the interest of others” is also in our own best interest. The squabbling is only allowing this situation to deteriorate further to a tipping point of unimaginable loss. This problem is not going to be solved in the typical American way. We will not be sending six slightly crazy, brilliant space cowboys into the stratosphere with a missile in the last seconds to blow something up... When do we look into this crisis to see what we should do as an Americans and as human beings?

No matter how you name the God of your beliefs, is he not the worldly giver of so many richly varied gifts? We all see butterflies, sunsets, waterfalls; the small treasures we personally value.

For me, the totally unnecessary delight of lightning bugs makes me believe that the God of my tradition, and I, really understand each other. This Earth is a gift we need to treasure. Our actions must confirm our understanding of that.

Georgia Ensemble Theatre commissions original musical ROSWELL, Ga. — Georgia Ensemble Theatre recently announced a new commission with Atlanta theatre artists Chase Peacock and Jessica De Maria to produce an original musical, “The Pretty Pants Bandit,” for the late fall of GET’s 2020-21 Season.

The story follows Marie Baker, her gang and one infamous pair of guns who took the country for a year-long ride that would make headlines. Notoriously leaving the men she robbed with their pants down, Baker’s evolution became a revolution.
